JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A powerful earthquake sparked a tsunami warning for hundreds of miles of Alaskan and Canadian coastline, but the alert was canceled when no damaging waves were generated.
The magnitude 7.5 quake and tsunami warning that followed caused concern in some coastal communities, with alarms sounding and people rushing to higher ground for safety.But the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center later said the waves were too small to pose a threat, reaching just six inches above normal sea level in places such as Sitka and Port Alexander."Initially, in the first 15 to 20 minutes, there might have been a bit of panic," Sitka Police Chief Sheldon Schmitt told The Associated Press in a phone interview. A Virginia legislator introduced a bill earlier this month that
if passed would make Virginia the fifth state to enact a sex-selective
abortion law, according to Americans United for Life (AUL), a national
pro-life organization based in Washington D.C.This kind of bill reinforces the fact that sex discrimination has no
place in a civilized society, said Mailee Smith, AUL staff counsel.“Sex-selection abortion prohibitions are a vital piece of preventing
the murder of unborn children,” Smith said, adding that there are 163
million girls missing from the world because of sex selection abortions.Delegate Robert G. Marshall, a Republican from Prince William,
introduced HB 1316 on Oct. 5 for the 2013 General Assembly. If passed,
the bill would make it a felony for any person who intentionally
performs an abortion knowing the abortion is sought solely on the
account of the sex of the preborn child.Three states — Illinois, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania — have laws in

"If there was no previous son, sons outnumbered daughters by 50%. By contrast, the sex ratios of eldest and younger children with an older brother were both within the range of the biologically normal, as were White offspring sex ratios (irrespective of the elder siblings' sex). We interpret the found deviation in favor of sons to be evidence of sex selection, most likely at the prenatal stage.""We cannot have a society tolerating the frivolous killing of people just because they're of the wrong sex," said Marshall.Tarina Keene, with the National Abortion Rights League, (NARAL) says even though the organization does not support gender-based abortions, she says this bill is just bad policy.
"It really puts the doctors in a very precarious situation. They have to be mind readers. They're essentially becoming agents of the state. It really violates the doctor-patient relationship. It creates mistrust between doctors and patients," said Keene.In Marshall's bill, the woman who has a sex-selective abortion would not be prosecuted, but the doctor who performs it could be charged with a Class 4 felony which carries a maximum ten years in jail.Marshall sees nothing wrong with that level of punishment. "Killing a person for the wrong sex, that's too soft," said Marshall."That's not what this bill is about. It is chipping away at a woman's right to chose, It is intimidating doctors," said Keene.NARAL says the bill is racist because it would cause the profiling of women of certain cultures which are known to have a preference for male babies. It has never been in use in that form, as "Spain" was never a part of the list in pre-1837 era when the long list was officially used.

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's King Juan Carlos I said he was worried about high youth unemployment and urged Spaniards to stick together to combat an economic crisis, in an interview to mark his 75th birthday after a year of scandal for the royal family.The king was widely

but last year his popularity slumped after he was forced to apologies
for going on an elephant hunting trip to Botswana as his country was mired in financial crisis.The interview, broadcast on national television late on

"The lack of work,
which means millions of families cannot live with dignity and that young

owing to a sharp economic slowdown after the country's decade-long real

with Spaniards suffering the effects of the crisis. It was made public

Tsunami warning issued after Alaska quake canceled
A tsunami was caused by the magnitude 7.5 quake that struck off the Alaskan coast Friday night.
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A powerful earthquake sparked a tsunami warning for hundreds of miles of Alaskan and Canadian coastline, but the alert was canceled when no damaging waves were generated.
The magnitude 7.5 quake and tsunami warning that followed caused concern in some coastal communities, with alarms sounding and people rushing to higher ground for safety.But the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center later said the waves were too small to pose a threat, reaching just six inches above normal sea level in places such as Sitka and Port Alexander."Initially, in the first 15 to 20 minutes, there might have been a bit of panic," Sitka Police Chief Sheldon Schmitt told The Associated Press in a phone interview. But he said things calmed down as the town waited for the all clear.The temblor struck at midnight Friday (1 a.m. PST Saturday) and was centered about 60 miles west of Craig, Alaska, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
"Houses shook; mine had things tossed from (the) wall," Craig Police Chief Robert Ely said. But he added that there were "no reports of any injuries, no wave, no tidal movement seen."The tsunami warning was eventually expanded to include coastal areas from Cape Fairweather, Alaska, to the northern tip of Vancouver Island, Canada — an area extending more than 700 miles.The center had warned that "significant widespread inundation of land is expected," adding that dangerous coastal flooding was possible.In its cancellation statement, the center said that some areas were seeing just small sea level changes.
"A tsunami was generated during this event but no longer poses a threat," the center said.
The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said the quake was widely felt but it received no reports of any damage."It was the most intense earthquake I've felt in my 10 years here. Virginia Lawmaker Introduces ‘Sex-Selective Abortion’ Bill

MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA) - All babies are precious, and many parents don't care if they have a boy or a girl. But in some cultures, the preference for male children has led to sex-selective abortions.Arizona has recently enacted a law to make them illegal. Now a Virginia lawmaker wants the Commonwealth to do the same."Let the feminists walk down to Richmond and say, 'Yes, aborting girls is a good thing. I mean, come on, they're not that stupid. They can't possibly do that," said a heated Bob Marshall, (R-13th District.)
The outspoken Manassas lawmaker has been trying to chip away at abortion rights for 20 years. This year, he is sponsoring a bill to make gender-based abortions illegal. He points to evidence that sex-selective abortions are apparently happening in America.Using the 2000 U.S. Census report, The National Academy of Sciences found "male-biased sex ratios among U.S.-born children of Chinese, Korean, and Asian Indian parents."It was particularly evident for third children, the report says. "If there was no previous son, sons outnumbered daughters by 50%. By contrast, the sex ratios of eldest and younger children with an older brother were both within the range of the biologically normal, as were White offspring sex ratios (irrespective of the elder siblings' sex). We interpret the found deviation in favor of sons to be evidence of sex selection, most likely at the prenatal stage.""We cannot have a society tolerating the frivolous killing of people just because they're of the wrong sex," said Marshall.Tarina Keene, with the National Abortion Rights League, (NARAL) says even though the organization does not support gender-based abortions, she says this bill is just bad policy.
"It really puts the doctors in a very precarious situation. They have to be mind readers. They're essentially becoming agents of the state. It really violates the doctor-patient relationship. It creates mistrust between doctors and patients," said Keene.In Marshall's bill, the woman who has a sex-selective abortion would not be prosecuted, but the doctor who performs it could be charged with a Class 4 felony which carries a maximum ten years in jail.Marshall sees nothing wrong with that level of punishment. "Killing a person for the wrong sex, that's too soft," said Marshall."That's not what this bill is about. It is chipping away at a woman's right to chose, It is intimidating doctors," said Keene.NARAL says the bill is racist because it would cause the profiling of women of certain cultures which are known to have a preference for male babies. US troops arrive in Turkey for Patriot missiles

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — U.S. troops have started to arrive in Turkey to man Patriot missiles meant to protect the NATO ally from potential Syrian warheads, the U.S. military said Friday.The United States, Germany and the Netherlands are each deploying two
batteries of the U.S.-built defense system to boost ally Turkey's air
defenses against any spillover from Syria's nearly 2-year civil war. The
Patriot systems are expected to become operational later this month.The Stuttgart, Germany-based U.S. European Command said in a
statement that U.S. personnel and equipment had started arriving at
Turkey's southern Incirlik Air Base. Some 400 personnel and equipment
from the U.S. military's Fort Sill, Oklahoma-based 3rd Battalion were to
be airlifted to Turkey over the coming days, while additional equipment
was expected to reach Turkey by sea later in January, the Command said.NATO endorsed Turkey's request for the Patriots on Nov. 30 after several Syrian shells landed on Turkish territory.Last month, NATO said the Syrian military has continued to fire
Scud-type missiles, although none had hit Turkish territory, and said
the alliance was justified in deploying the anti-missile systems in
Turkey. Ankara is supporting the Syrian opposition and rebels and is
providing shelter to Syrian refugees.More than 1,000 American, German and Dutch troops are to be based in
Turkey to operate the batteries. NATO said the Americans will be based
at Gaziantep, 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Syria. The Germans will
be based at Kahramanmaras, located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north
of the Syrian border; the Dutch at Adana, about 100 kilometers (66
miles) west of the border.
Navy Vice Adm. Charles Martoglio, the Command's deputy chief,
reiterated that the Patriots' deployment is for defensive purposes only
and would not support a no-fly zone "or any offensive operation," in
Syria, according to the Command's statement."Turkey is an important NATO ally and we welcome the opportunity to
support the Turkish government's request in accordance with the NATO
standing defense plan," it quoted Martoglio as saying.Syria is reported to have an
array of artillery rockets, as well as medium-range missiles — some
capable of carrying chemical warheads. These include Soviet-built SS-21
Scarabs and Scud-B missiles, originally designed to deliver nuclear
warheads.Last month, a top military
commander from Iran — a key Syrian ally — warned Turkey against
stationing the NATO systems on its territory, saying such a move risks
conflict with Syria.
