ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Three men came to the central Nigerian church just before Bible study began, but instead of joining the worship service they opened fire, killing at least 19 people in an attack that shows that violence already seen elsewhere in the divided nation is spreading.Witnesses and the military described a chaotic, blood-soaked scene at the Deeper Life church in Otite, a quiet neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Okene, 250 kilometers (155 miles) southwest of Nigeria's capital Abuja.Two gunmen sprayed the windowless sanctuary Monday night with fire from Kalashnikov assault rifles, said Lt. Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi, the head of a local joint army and police unit. Another armed man stayed back and switched off the generator providing lights in the church, leaving those inside unable to flee as the gunfire flashed through the darkness, witness Lawan Saliu said. Saliu spoke from a hospital bed Tuesday after sustaining a gunshot wound to his stomach.It remained unclear how many people were wounded in the attack. Olorunyomi said some of the injured sought care in hospitals, while others remained at home. A rescue official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as officials had yet to publicly release casualty numbers, said there likely were less than 20 people wounded in the attack.

Soldiers and police officers searched for gunmen through the night, but had made no arrests as of Tuesday afternoon, Kogi state police spokesman Simon Ile said. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.The attack comes as Nigeria faces continuing attacks from a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram. Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's Muslim north, has attacked churches in the past. They have also attacked mosques.Although they have not previously claimed responsibility for attacks on places of worship this far south, authorities have said they raided a bomb factory run by suspected sect members in Okene in April. They also blamed Boko Haram for a February prison break in the town of Koton-Karifi , also in Kogi state that freed 119 inmates. That attack mirrored a massive prison break in the northeastern city of Bauchi in September 2010 when Boko Haram freed about 700 inmates.The sect is blamed for more than 660 killings this year alone in Nigeria, according to an Associated Press count.Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people, is largely divided into a Muslim north and Christian south. If the PA seeks statehood unilaterally, he told Arutz Sheva, Israel must unilaterally annex Judea and Samaria (Shomron).Past experience with the PA’s UN bids shows there is no need to fear the “political tsunami” predicted by Defense Minister Ehud Barak last time, he said.However, while the PA bid is not risky, it deserves a “fitting” response, he said. “Why do we always need to react to Palestinian initiatives by begging for mercy?” he asked. “We need to say clearly that if they want to start a one-sided process, we’ll answer them in their own language.”“They want to drag us into responding, but we need to lead,” he declared.A unilateral bid for statehood would violate every PA agreement with Israel, he noted.Danon said Israel would have significant support in the United States Congress for annexation of Judea and Samaria. More than 60 congressmen have said they would support the move, he reported.Israel would face international pressure, he admitted. An IDF investigation of the terror attack in southern Israel Sunday night indicates that terrorists were able to blow open a fence on the Gaza border by blowing up 500 kilograms of explosives, that were stored inside a truck. The operation, top IDF officials were quoted as saying by Channel Two, presents a “worrying picture of the intentions of terrorist groups to attack Israel.”Terrorists who raided an Egyptian base near the Kerem Shalom border crossing, with a border common to Egypt, Israel, and Gaza, stole two vehicles after killing a number of Egyptian soldiers. One of the vehicles – which was loaded with ammunition, according to the Channel Two report – was exploded at the border crossing into Israel. The second vehicle was able to penetrate Israel.The original plan, according to the Channel Two report, was to use the explosive truck to carry out a major terror attack in an Israeli town near the border. Preceding the truck would have been several suicide bombers, wearing explosive belts.The truck ended up being used to blow open a hole in the fence, but the plan for the suicide bombers to blow themselves up was still being executed. The suicide bombers entered Israel with the terrorists, who were finally eliminated by the IDF. The investigation showed that the terrorists were riding in the second Egyptian vehicle, an armored jeep. The jeep was able to travel inside Israel for about 15 minutes before being destroyed. Reports from the field said that the Egyptians did not increase their patrols at the border in the aftermath of the attack on the military base.According to Channel Two, IDF officials received intelligence last Friday than a major border attack was in the works. Israel forwarded the information to Egyptian officials, but they apparently did not act on the information.

A previously unknown group, the Shura Mujahadeen Council, took responsibility for the attack. The group posted a Facebook message praising the attack, and saying that “there is no place in the Arab and Muslim world for liberal and secular democratic values,” and that they were “dedicated to the struggle against Zionism.” The perpetrators are suspected to be Sinai Bedouin.

Tropical storm heads for pass along Honduras coast

The latest defection shows Assad has lost control of the country and that his people believe his days are numbered, a US official in Washington told AFP.The surprise development was "just the latest indication that Assad has lost control of Syria and that the momentum is with the opposition forces and the Syrian people," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said.The Syrian opposition in Jordan said Hijab and his family had slipped over the border during the night accompanied by two government ministers and three army officers."The Free Syrian Army helped all of them cross the border... Several other army officers defected and arrived in Jordan last night," said Syrian National Council member Khalid Zein al-Abedin.
SNC leader Abdel Basset Sayda said "this defection shows that the regime is disintegrating. It is the beginning of the end," while the Muslim Brotherhood hailed what it called "a courageous expression of great nationalism."In Damascus, state television put out a terse report announcing that Hijab had been dismissed and replaced on an interim basis.Information Minister Omran al-Zohbi later said defections at whatever level would have no impact on the Syrian state, while denying that any other ministers had switched allegiances.

The 46-year-old Hijab was only appointed on June 6 after a widely boycotted May 7 parliamentary election that was hailed as a centrepiece of reform by the Assad regime but dismissed as a farce by Arab and Western governments.An agricultural engineer by training, he was agriculture minister under his predecessor Adel Safar.Word of his defection came as the Syrian army readied a major ground assault against rebels in the northern city of Aleppo who say they control half of the city of some 2.7 million people.It also came as a bomb blast rocked Syrian state television headquarters in the heart of Damascus, wounding several people just two days after the army said it had seized the last rebel-held area of the capital.The morning bombing struck management offices on the third floor of the television building in the heavily protected Omayyad district of the city.In Aleppo, the army bombarded a string of rebel neighbourhoods after government security officials said troops had completed their build-up and that a 20,000-strong force was poised for a ground assault.A rebel commander was killed in the Salaheddin district in the southwest, and troops shelled the Palace of Justice as well as the Marjeh and Shaar districts, the Observatory said.At least 21 civilians were killed in the city of Aleppo, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which gave a death toll of 137 across the country on Monday, including 82 civilians.The head of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria, Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, on Monday issued an appeal on behalf of civilians, amid fears of a looming bloodbath in Aleppo."I urge the parties to protect civilians and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law. Civilians must not be subjected to shelling and use of heavy weapons," he said.A Syrian rebel group, meanwhile, which has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of 48 Iranians in Damascus said three of its hostages were killed in shelling by government troops on Monday.
