A day out with professional hunter Jeff Rann, pictured with the king, costs a further $2,000.The king's accident, after which he was flown back to Madrid for a hip operation, came days after his grandson, 13-year-old Froilán Marichalar, shot himself in the foot while hunting in Spain. He also had to be hospitalised and doctors removed the contents of a 36-calibre shotgun cartridge from his foot. Newspapers reported that it was illegal for a 13-year-old to handle that type of gun.The king's hunting trip, which officials described as private, has caused a storm of angry comment from animal lovers and those wanting to know how much it had cost.A promotional video on YouTube shows Rann shooting elephants – which can be killed with licences bought at auction from the Botswana government – in the Okavango delta.

We cannot have banned debates.The Frankfurt-based ECB was a political target for Sarkozy five years ago during the 2007 presidential election campaign. Since then he has regularly spoken out in favour of a more active role by the bank in saving ailing governments in the eurozone.This put him on collision course with German Chancellor Angela Merkel for whom the independence of the bank is sacred.In November last year as Italy and Spain's borrowing costs rose to bail-out territory, Sarkozy and Merkel, as well as Italy's Mario Monti, agreed not to publicly discuss the ECB's role to avoid the impression that the bank is subject to political influence.The bank soon rolled out the first half of a €1 trillion worth of cheap loans to banks, which in turn bought up Spanish and Italian bonds and drove the costs down.

But Spain's borrowing costs have started to rise again in recent weeks, despite the second half of cheap loans injected in the banking system.Sarkozy has other concerns however. ECB staff worried about inflation

With inflation expected to stay above two percent this year, the ECB's own staff is now reportedly worried about having no protection against a slide in the value of the euro, partly caused by the institution they are working for.Unfortunately the pensions of ECB staff are not protected against inflation, Carlos Bowles, a spokesman for the ECB staff told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. He added that there is a legal case at the European Court of Justice against the ECB on the matter.But if it were to agree to an inflation-linked adjustment to pensions, the ECB would be admitting it that it could fail in its core task: protecting the eurozone against inflation.

He came carrying ten firebombs and managed to throw seven of them at ground floor apartments in the compound, causing a fire to break out in one of them. The compound's security guards identified the terrorist and fired in the air, causing him to flee.MK Aryeh Eldad (National Union) said Monday that police arrived on the scene and proceeded to question the security men over their decision to fire in the air.The Commander of the Jerusalem District deserves to be sacked for a lot less than that,said Eldad.

Eldad wrote to the Minister of Public Security and asked him to reissue the instructions on opening fire, and to clarify that a firebomb is a deadly weapon and that whoever uses it should be fired at, with intention to hit him.The worst outcome of all would be if the terrorist who meant to burn Jews in their sleep will continue his actions while the security men who dared to protect the residents' lives are sacked from their jobs,he added.

Shater, released from prison in March 2011, was disqualified on the basis of a law stating candidates can only run for office six years after being pardoned or freed.Meanwhile, terrorism is already on the rise in the Sinai Peninsula, as has been the case since Mubarak’s ouster. On Sunday, two Egyptian soldiers were killed and two others were wounded by radical Salafi Islamist terrorists in the region.Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu commented earlier this month that the region is rapidly becoming a rocket launching pad for terrorists,in addition to having already become a hideout for terror cells. Israel is building a security barrier in an effort to deter attacks.Suleiman told the Egyptian newspaper he intends to appeal the decision reject his candidacy. Suleiman was given 48 hours to appeal the decision.

Iran has bought itself extra time during a first round of key talks with world powers over its disputed nuclear programme, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday.My initial impression is that Iran has been given a freebie,Netanyahu said during talks with visiting US Senator Joe Lieberman, the premier's office reported.It has got five weeks to continue enrichment without any limitation, any inhibition. I think Iran should take immediate steps to stop all enrichment, take out all enrichment material and dismantle the nuclear facility in Qom,he said.I believe that the world's greatest practitioner of terrorism must not have the opportunity to develop atomic bombs, he said.At Saturday's talks in Istanbul, during which Iranian officials sat down with the so-called P5+1 grouping of diplomats from the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, the sides agreed to hold a more in-depth meeting in Baghdad on May 23.Officials described the talks as positive but stressed that a great deal was expected of Iran at the next meeting.

The UN Security Council has slapped four rounds of sanctions on Tehran over suspicions harboured by Israel and much of the West that Iran is seeking a militarised nuclear capability -- a charge which Tehran denies.Of special concern is Iran's formerly secret Fordo site located deep inside a mountain bunker near the holy city of Qom that is enriching to 20 percent purity but which experts say could be reconfigured to produce 90 percent weapons-grade material.Israel, which sees a nuclear Iran as an existential threat, has not ruled out a preemptive strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran is ready to resolve all nuclear issues in the next round of talks with world powers if the West starts lifting sanctions, its foreign minister said on Monday.In an interview with the Iranian student news agency ISNA, Ali Akbar Salehi also hinted that Iran could make concessions on its higher-grade uranium enrichment, a key concern of Western powers.If the West wants to take confidence-building measures it should start in the field of sanctions because this action can speed up the process of negotiations reaching results, Salehi was quoted as saying.

If there is goodwill, one can pass through this process very easily and we are ready to resolve all issues very quickly and simply and even in the Baghdad meeting, he added, referring to a second round of talks with world powers scheduled to take place in the Iraqi capital on May 23.Salehi described an initial meeting with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany in Istanbul on Saturday as positive and constructive.The talks had been stalled for more than a year during which time the United States and the European Union tightened sanctions on Iran which they suspect is seeking nuclear weapons capability, a charge Tehran denies.Salehi said Iran would always assert its right to process uranium for peaceful purposes but that there might be room for a compromise on higher-level enrichment.Enrichment is Iran's right but we can negotiate on how we obtain uranium with different enrichment levels, he said.Making 20 percent (enriched nuclear) fuel is our right as long as it provides for our reactor needs and there is no question about that, he said, but added:If they guarantee that they will provide us with the different levels of enriched fuel that we need, then that would be another issue.Iran says it needs uranium enriched to a purity of 20 percent to fuel a medical research reactor, but many countries see its enrichment to that level a dangerous step towards the 90 percent enrichment needed for an atomic bomb.

A deal tentatively agreed with the West in 2009 would have seen Iran exporting some of its lower enriched uranium in return for fuel for the medical reactor. BEIRUT (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Monday the Syrian government is responsible for guaranteeing U.N. observers full freedom of movement to monitor the country's tenuous cease-fire, which appeared to be unraveling as regime forces pounded the opposition stronghold of Homs, activists said.Even though the overall level of violence across Syria has dropped significantly since the truce took effect Thursday, the government's shelling of Homs over the weekend raised fresh doubts about President Bashar Assad's commitment to special envoy Kofi Annan's plan to end 13 months of violence and launch talks on the country's political future.An advance team of six observers arrived in Damascus late Sunday and quickly set about negotiating the mission's ground rules with Syrian authorities.Ban, speaking to reporters in Brussels, called on Assad to ensure the observers are not impeded in any way in their work.It is the Syrian government's responsibility to guarantee freedom of access, freedom of movement within the country, he said Monday.They should be allowed to freely move to any places where they will be able to observe this cessation of violence.He called the cease-fire very fragile, but said it was essential that it hold so that an inclusive political dialogue can continue. He said opposition forces should also fully cooperate.The U.N. plans to increase the advance team to 30 people, all of them unarmed, Ban said, adding that the Security Council is expected to authorize a formal monitoring team of about 250 people later this week.The advance team, led by Moroccan Col. Ahmed Himmiche, met Monday with Syrian Foreign Ministry officials to discuss ground rules, including what freedom of movement the observers would have, according to Annan's spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi.

Although the Security Council has demanded full access for the U.N. team, Assad's regime could try to create obstacles. The failure of an Arab League observer mission earlier this year was blamed in part on regime restrictions imposed on the monitors, including having to travel with government minders.Fawzi said in a statement issued in Geneva on Monday that the mission will start with setting up operating headquarters, and reaching out to the Syrian government and the opposition forces so that both sides fully understand the role of the U.N. observers.We will start our mission as soon as possible and we hope it will be a success,Himmiche told The Associated Press as he left a Damascus hotel along with his team Monday morning.The international community hopes U.N. observers will be able to stabilize the cease-fire, which formally took effect Thursday, although pockets of violence have persisted, particularly in the central cities of Hama and Homs.Tarek Badrakhan, an activist from the battered and almost deserted Homs district of Khaldiyeh, said the regime resumed its intense bombardment of the neighborhood early Monday.The shelling hasn't stopped for one minute since this morning. There are buildings on fire right now, he said via Skype.Badrakhan and other activists said the army appeared to be pushing to take control of the last rebel-held districts in Homs and was pounding Khaldiyeh from three sides. He said half of the nearby district of Bayada fell under the army's control Sunday night. Troops were trying to storm Qarabees and Jouret al-Shayah but the Free Syrian Army is repelling them, he said, referring to the army defectors fighting the government.We hope that the observers would come to Homs as soon as possible because if things go on like this, there won't be anything left called Homs, Badrakhan said.Two activist groups, the Local Coordination Committees and the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed the intense shelling of Homs. They also said at least five people were killed in gunfire in the central city of Hama and four in the northern city of Idlib Monday.The pounding of Homs and other scattered violence has further fueled skepticism among Western countries and the Syrian opposition that Assad will not abide by Annan's six-point plan for a cease-fire.The Syrian leader accepted the truce deal at the prodding of his main ally, Russia, but his compliance has been limited. He has halted shelling of rebel-held neighborhoods, with the exception of Homs, but ignored calls to pull troops out of urban centers, apparently for fear of losing control over a country his family has ruled for four decades. Rebel fighters have also kept up attacks, including shooting ambushes.The U.N. Security Council approved the observer mission unanimously on Saturday.

It's the first peace initiative to enjoy broad backing, including from Russia and China, who shielded the Syrian regime from Security Council censure in the past. Syrian officials said Foreign Minister Walid Moallem was headed to China for a two-day visit. Last week, Moallem met with his Russian counterpart in Moscow.Also Monday, a Hamas official said a senior member of the Palestinian group, Mustafa Lidawi, was abducted over the weekend near Damascus. In the past, Lidawi had served as the Hamas representative in Iran and Lebanon.Lidawi opposed a recent power-sharing agreement between the Islamic militant Hamas and its Western-backed rival, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and was seen as a supporter of Assad's regime. Until recently, Hamas' top leaders were based in Damascus, but became increasingly critical of Assad's crackdown on the uprising and decided to leave the country.Hamas asked the Syrian authorities to try to find Lidawi, said a senior official of the group in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the contacts. The Organization of American States summit in Cartagena, Columbia will not go down as a glorious chapter in the annals of American relations with Latin America.It bears comparison - by contrast - with the 2009 summit. Then, Barack Obama, the newly inaugurated president of the United States, still enjoyed rock star status. Even Hugo Chavez, the main challenger to American influence in Latin America, reacted to the new president by offering him a copy of his book.Now, Obama was in friendly territory in Columbia, where the United States had invested copious resources in helping the Columbian government set off the threat of the FARC narco-terrorists.
Additionally, Hugo Chavez, who normally stars at these meetings to fulminate against the US and propagate his Bolivarian revolution, was absent. The fact that Chavez gave the summit a miss to fly to Cuba for intensive cancer treatment either highlights the seriousness of his medical condition or reflects an insight that even without his presence, Barack Obama would be on the defensive.It was not a good start for American prestige when prior to the summit, 12 US Secret Service agents were sent packing for behavior that would not be tolerated on a professional sports team, let alone from an elite unit.The host, Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos, set the stage by calling in effect for the legalization of some drugs. The drug trade has caused terrible violence in Latin America, while enriching the drug cartels to the point that they can subvert security forces and government agencies.Santos also voiced the Latin American consensus that Cuba should be readmitted to the organization, a position opposed only by the United States and Canada. With the growing influence of the center-left in Latin America, many of the countries' leaders have a sneaking admiration for Fidel Castro.Finally, Santos hinted that, fine words, aside the United States was still treating Latin America as a sideshow and was more involved in faraway places such as Pakistan and Afghanistan.
