Israel deployed an Iron Dome rocket interceptor system outside Sderot on Thursday, Reuters reports.Sderot sits just 4 km. from Gaza and has borne the brunt of rocket and mortar attacks fired by terrorists in the region.Military analysts say the deployment marked a readiness for the system to deal with short-range rocket and mortar attacks despite some skepticism from independent experts about the system's capabilities.The Hamas terror organization has been testing Iron Dome by firing rockets into Israel in the hopes of finding weak spots in the defense it provides.

Initially deployed in March, Iron Dome won high praise fro US and Israeli officials for successfully intercepting eight of nine Katyusha-style rockets fired at two southern Israeli cities from Gaza in one day.Iron Dome has passed field trials for threats with ranges of between four kilometres to 40 kilometres, so this deployment tests the lower-most end of that spectrum, Uzi Rubin, a missile designer who consults for Israel's Defense Ministry, told Reuters.Noting the recent ebbing in violence along the Gaza frontier, Rubin said: Let's hope action by Iron Dome is not required. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - European anti-racism campaigners have criticised moves by Finnish authorities to colour-code the country's ID cards, with bright blue cards for native-born citizens and brown cards for all foreign nationals, calling the new scheme legalised ethnic profiling.The scheme, to go into effect from 1 June, aims to make it easier for border guards and police to distinguish individuals. Colour-coding existed previously, with the two cards a light blue and light pink respectively, but, according to the National Police, it was not easy for authorities to make the distinction. Minors are also now to be given purple ID cards.While the blue cards used by adult Finns can also be employed as a travel document throughout the EU and Nordic countries instead of a passport, the brown, foreigner card may not.

Although within the EU identity cards meeting a European standard can also be used by European citizens as a travel document in place of a passport, the European Commission said on Tuesday that there is nothing it can do about the matter as the issuance of ID cards remains a national responsibility.We have no competence over ID cards. Lebanese Army Seals Border Ahead of 6-Day War Riots

Lebanon declared its border with Israel a closed military zone Thursday, three days ahead of the 44th anniversary of the outbreak of the Six Day War.The move was taken out of concern over possible developments on Naksa Day,a security source told the Lebanese Daily Star.The Arabs have dubbed June 5 Naksa Day, or the Day of the Setback.” It comes three weeks after Nakba Day, the Day of the Disaster,which marks the anniversary of Israel's War of Independence in 1948. In both events, Arabs lost territory after planning to annihilate Israel and failing to do so.Another Lebanese daily, A-Nahar, also reported on its website that Lebanon had declared its border with Israel, including Fatma Gate, a closed military zone. The Lebanese military is apparently concerned about an attempt by Palestinian demonstrators to reach the area.
A Facebook site that called The Third Intifada announced that on Sunday, June 5, marches toward Israel will begin after the noontime prayers in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. Volunteers from throughout the Arab world will participate, it said. In Europe, there will be marches on Israeli embassies, and marches and confrontations with the enemy soldiers will continue in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel.A protest is also scheduled to take place at the Lebanese village of Maroun A-Ras. Reports said that this protest is being held in coordination with the Lebanese authorities and that Fatah men may take part in it. Daily A-Safir reported that the Lebanese military is in touch with UNIFIL regarding Naksa Day and intends to cooperate with it, in the spirit of UN Resolution 1701. A Lebanese source said that the Lebanese Army will keep the protests four kilometers away from the Israel border, in order to prevent clashes with Israel. This, as Israel is mulling ways to avoid becoming embroiled in another violent scenario similar to the incident that left nine terrorists dead on the Turkish-sponsored Mavi Marmara vessel in the May 2010 flotilla to Gaza.U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has sent letters to a number of countries in the eastern Mediterranean urging them not to send these flotillas to Gaza. In addition, the U.S. is also taking a dim view on the latest attempt by Turkish and European activists to breach Israel's defensive blockade of the terrorist-controlled region.Israeli security officials are mulling several alternatives for dealing with the latest flotilla, set for mid-June, including redirecting the vessels to Ashdod port for inspection and then allowing them to continue on their way.But U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Mark C. Toner told reporters at a briefing Wednesday the Obama administration has already discussed the matter with Turkey as well.

She noted that animals often can sense an impending storm long before humans are aware of it. He was jumping on to small tables where he doesn't fit, and generally acting like a cat on catnip, Marshall added.The last tornado to have hit Massachusetts was in 2008, but there have been no fatalities from such a weather system since 1995, when three people died in the town of Great Barrington.

The National Weather Service this week issued a tornado watch for much of the East Coast, including Philadelphia and New York, as well as Boston. Last week, the Midwest was devastated by a series of deadly twisters that left 134 people dead in Joplin, Missouri.Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expect a tough hurricane system ahead for the coming months. On the eve of Memorial Day, and the anniversary of Michigan's 1998 Derecho wind, severe storms with at least one possible tornado blasted through Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Calhoun, St. Joseph county, Eaton Rapids and parts of west Michigan, according to WZZM 13.The storm consisted of rain, thunder, lightning and heavy winds of upwards of 75 to 80 miles per hour. There was at least one confirmed tornado report in Battle Creek. Several local residents videotaped what appeared to be funnel clouds, a rotating wall cloud and circular winds at tree level.No deaths have been reported. A Red Cross post has been set up at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek. Michigan First Responders and emergency teams have divided the city into quadrants to address safety. They are mainly looking for people trapped in homes and vehicles.A home in Byron Township was struck by lightening. In Calhoun County alone, 28,000 people are without power, reports the Battle Creek Enquirer. Relatively few injuries have been reported.Michiganders are pretty well-versed in storm safety. Local area schools conduct regular tornado drills. Kids are taught at a young age to open windows in storms to allow wind to pass through the home and not blow windows out.

The biggest danger in the aftermath of this storm is downed power lines, possible gas leaks and debris. Home and business owners are encouraged to exercise extreme caution as they clean up their property. Be especially careful cleaning up in kitchens, workshops, garage areas and around machinery.The majority of damage was caused by falling debris and fallen trees. Michigan is known for huge deciduous oak, maple, elm, sycamore, willow, aspen (poplar) and ash trees. Some trees uproot entirely in high winds. Other trees, especially old trees with partially rotted trunks, bend and crack. Falling limbs are another source of danger.The high winds described by Kalamazoo and Battle Creek residents sound very similar to the 1998 Derecho wind in West Michigan. A derecho is a strong wind with some rotational air masses. On May 30-31, 1998, a Derecho wind hit our mobile home park of Country Estates. Homes and cars were damaged.We were shocked at the strength of the winds (estimates of 120 mph). The taller trees were the first to go. The Derecho wind blew through my back yard. Five-story oak fell like matchsticks, while my short squat apple tree, though bent flat to the ground, survived. Evergreens also withstand winds because they are wide at the bottom and narrow at the top.The biggest danger during that wind was clean-up injury. Residents were running around with chainsaws, hacking away at downed trees and limbs. Some knew what they were doing and were careful. Several neighbors scaled trees with the chainsaw running and nearly killed themselves. One neighbor held the chainsaw aloft, and nearly cut a branch down on himself and several people standing under the tree. We called it the Spring Lake Chainsaw Massacre.Be careful as you cut branches: look to see where the branch will fall. If you don't know what you're doing, leave it to the professionals. SPRINGFIELD, Mass (Reuters) – Search and rescue efforts continued and thousands in Massachusetts were still without power on Thursday after tornadoes that ripped through the state the previous day, killing at least four people.The twisters injured at least 200.The casualty count hasn't changed yet, although we have a lot of folks doing search and rescue, dealing with debris piles and things today, so that number could change,Peter Judge, spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, told Reuters.We'll keep our fingers crossed.Two teams from the National Weather Service were surveying the damage and severity of the storms that struck central and western Massachusetts during the evening rush hour on Wednesday.

Another Comet Plunges Into Sun During Solar Storm

A sun-watching spacecraft has recorded views of an ill-fated comet plunging into the sun just after a huge solar eruption — the second time in 10 days that a comet dive-bombed Earth's star during a solar storm.Over May 20 and 21, the sun unleashed a big coronal mass ejection (CME), an immense burst of plasma that sent solar particles streaking into space at fantastic speeds. Shortly thereafter, a kamikaze comet barreled into the sun. And one of NASA's twin STEREO spacecraft caught it all on video, agency officials announced last week.Soon after [the eruption], as a bonus visual, a sun-grazing comet came streaking in (from the right) heading for the sun, NASA officials said in a May 27 statement.Its tail could be seen elongating substantially as it approached the sun and apparently disintegrated.This dramatic series of events followed closely on the heels of a similar spectacle less than two weeks earlier. Between May 10 and May 11, NASA's SOHO spacecraft spotted a different comet diving toward the sun, never to be seen again. A massive CME erupted at about the same time.Scientists think the confluence of solar storms and suicidal comets is purely coincidental. There is no evidence of any physical connection between the two, NASA officials have said.Both of the recent kamikaze comets are thought to belong to the so-called Kreutz family of comets. Kreutz comets have orbits that approach within a few hundred thousand miles of the sun.

All Kreutz comets are thought to be the remains of one giant comet that broke apart several centuries ago. They are named after 19th century astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who first demonstrated that such comets were related.Coronal mass ejections shoot charged particles from the sun over several hours. Such solar eruptions can spew up to 10 billion tons of plasma and expand away from the sun at speeds topping 1 million mph, NASA officials have said.When these solar particles hit Earth's magnetic field, they can cause massive geomagnetic storms, which have the potential to wreak long-lasting havoc on power and communications infrastructure around the globe.But the effects of CMEs are not all bad. The particles can also produce the spectacular light shows that we know as auroras (in the Northern Hemisphere, these displays are called the aurora borealis, or nothern lights).The sun is in the midst of an active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle. Europe E.coli is toxic new strain, trade row grows

LONDON (Reuters) – A highly infectious new strain of E.coli bacteria is causing a deadly outbreak of food poisoning that is spreading from Germany across Europe, scientists said on Thursday, raising alarm bells worldwide.Experts in China, part of a global network of laboratories racing to understand the sickness which killed a 17th victim overnight, said they had found the bug carried genes that made it resistant to several classes of antibiotics.The U.N. said the strain had not infected people before.With more than 1,500 people already ill in one of the worst recorded outbreaks of E.coli, Russia prompted international recriminations by banning imports from the European Union of raw vegetables, thought to be the likely source of infection.This E. coli is a new strain of bacteria that is highly infectious and toxic, said the Chinese scientists at the Beijing Genomics Institute in Shenzhen city.At the World Health Organization, the United Nations health watchdog, a spokeswoman said: This strain has never been seen in an outbreak situation before.Holger Rohde, a bacteriologist at Hamburg University Hospital, which has been at the epicenter of the sickness first reported last week said: We have detected that it is indeed a new, not yet described, variant of this pathogen.

We will be able to draw conclusions from this in future.Cases have been reported in at least 10 European countries and the United States, although almost all those outside Germany are in people who had recently been there.Moscow had already banned imports of vegetables from Germany and Spain because of the infections, which German officials originally blamed on contaminated cucumbers imported from Spain before backtracking and apologizing to Madrid.Russia's ban on Thursday on all raw vegetables from the European Union prompted cries of protest from the Polish and Dutch governments and a rebuke from the European Commission.Gennady Onishchenko, head of the Russian consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor, said the deaths showed the much-praised European sanitary legislation, which Russia is being urged to adopt, does not work,Interfax news agency reported.The new ban would take effect on Thursday morning, he said. The European Commission said it would write to Moscow within hours to say the move was disproportionate.

Spain is threatening legal action over the crisis. It wants compensation for its farmers, who say lost sales are costing them 200 million euros ($287 million) a week and could put 70,000 people out of work.Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said the European Commission had been slow to act.I would have liked a clearer reaction from the Commission, he said in an interview on state radio RNE. The German federal government should know that it has an overall responsibility to other states in the European Union and we shall ask for very forthright explanations and...demand sufficient reparations.Poland, which along with France, Germany, is one of the biggest exporters of fruits and vegetables to Russia, said Russian reaction was excessive compared to the danger.But we must also realize that the time we took in Europe to find out what was going on has been too long, Poland's Farm Minister Marek Sawicki told a news conference in Warsaw.The European Commission cannot pretend nothing has happened...the situation is already impacting farmers.The Netherlands, famous for its mass-production of salad crops such as lettuce and tomatoes, described the Russian ban as a major blow. After the collapse of the German consumer market, sales to Russia are now also impossible,junior minister for economic affairs, agriculture and innovation Henk Bleker said.European Union countries exported 594 million euros ($853 million) worth of vegetables to Russia last year while EU imports of vegetables from Russia were just 29 million euros, EU data show. It was not clear what proportion of that was raw.

BLOODY DIARRHOEA, KIDNEY DAMAGE

German officials have said there is still is no indication of a definable source for the outbreak. A spokesman for the European Commission said hundreds of scientists in Germany were working around the clock to try to pinpoint it.Health experts are advising people living in Germany or traveling there to avoid eating raw tomatoes, cucumbers and salad. Anyone returning from Germany with illness including bloody diarrhea should seek urgent medical attention, Britain's Health Protection Agency said in a statement.The WHO said it had also been notified of cases in Austria, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Britain. Almost all the cases are in people who had recently visited Germany. Many patients have been hospitalized, the WHO said, with several needing intensive care, including dialysis due to kidney complications.EU officials have said three cases of E. coli linked to the German outbreak have also been reported in the United States.Health experts say they are shocked by the outbreak, which is on a scale never seen before in the region. Government plans to move quickly on budget

OTTAWA (Reuters) – The Conservative government intends to move quickly to implement its fiscal package before the summer break, House Leader Peter Van Loan said on Thursday.Thursday is the first day of Parliament following the May 2 election, which saw the Conservatives returned to power with a majority of the 308 seats in the House of Commons, meaning they no longer need opposition support to pass legislation.

The House will sit for only three weeks before adjourning until September, and Van Loan said the government aims to push through its fiscal package, as well as a budget implementation bill, this month.Our top legislative priority will be the passing of the budget, Van Loan, who runs the government's agenda in the House, told reporters.He said the government's focus will be on jobs and growth, and staying the low-tax fiscal course.Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will present the budget in the House of Commons on Monday. He has said it will be largely the same as the one he introduced in March. Following pressure from lawmakers that resulted in the Department of Justice resorting to threats of federal blockades last week to stymie a bill in Texas that would have made TSA groping a felony, a top Transportation Security Administration official has indicated that the agency might be about to cave on its aggressive pat down procedures.During a roundtable session in Anchorage Alaska hosted by U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, TSA Field Operations Manager Scott Johnson said the agency was considering changes in its screening techniques,reports the Associated Press.

Instead of groping young children and searching babies’ diapers, the TSA is looking at treating passengers differently based on their potential risk, a policy that would rank populations of air passengers as more or less potentially dangerous.There are probably people that we have to take a closer look at than others,said Johnson.
However, subjecting individuals deemed suitable for a closer look by the TSA to more aggressive screening may have little to do with stopping terrorists considering the fact that the TSA apparently judges the biggest threat to be journalists who criticized the agency and were then put on a watch list as a form of punishment.This whole idea of risk assessment … trying to determine what’s high risk, what’s a low risk, how they manage that, I think was a good statement and a new policy that they have,said Senator Begich, noting that body scanners which do not show intimate details of a person’s naked body are in the pipeline. However, worries about the radiation threat posed by such devices, an even bigger concern, were not addressed.
The round table session was organized by Republican State Rep. Sharon Cissna’s United States for Travel Freedom Caucus, a group that is pushing for legislation to be enacted across the country that would ban TSA molestation.Cissna, a 68-year-old cancer survivor who suffered molestation and abuse in her youth, made shock waves back in February when she refused to submit to a TSA grope-down and was subsequently prevented from flying from Seattle, Washington to her home in Alaska.It’s a paradigm shift that has gone on here, where suddenly it’s all right to teach kids that it’s all right to have strangers touching them in the most personal places,she said.

Last week, the Department of Justice and the TSA used financial terrorism to nix HB 1937 in Texas, a bill that would have made it A criminal act for security personnel to touch a person’s private areas without probable cause as a condition of travel or as a condition of entry into a public place,shortly before the legislation looked to be on its way to passage in the Senate having passed the Texas House unanimously.The DOJ and Homeland Security intimidated lawmakers into dropping the bill after they threatened to shut down all the airports in Texas and prevent any commercial flights from operating out of or entering the state.While any change in policy by the TSA should be welcomed, let’s not forget that following the national outcry at the end of last year against intrusive airport screening that was spearheaded by the Drudge Report, John Pistole’s promise that the TSA was looking at making the process less intrusive was never fulfilled, and if anything the grope-downs became more aggressive, with TSA goons directly sticking their hands down people’s pants.
