A Fanshawe College residence was a scene of bloody carnage on Friday morning with bullet-riddled corpses strewn in the corridors and dozens of injured being carried away.It was all fake -- a very realistic exercise designed to train students and emergency workers to handle a real tragedy.Exercise Peregrine, named for the residence where it takes place, involved a hypothetical scenario where a gunman walks in and starts firing at students -- a scenario similar to the Virginia Tech or Ecole Polytechnique tragedies.The situation was made as real as possible with bloody makeup, shell casings, fake shattered glass and the smell of gunpowder.A gym was turned into a makeshift triage centre and a security perimeter was set up around the campus.Steven Clemens, Fanshawe's emergency management supervisor said the simulation is a test of the college's emergency and lockdown procedures but also gives students in the paramedic and nursing program a realistic training scenario.

There has to be some effort to rationally prioritize. School shootings are both exceedingly rare and very difficult to safeguard against. This ought to make them an extremely low priority for safety efforts.Unfortunately, humans are extremely poor at understanding probability. We tend to judge perceived risks based on factors like how subjectively dramatic they seem, or whether they seem to be out of our control. RUSSIAN President Dmitry Medvedev yesterday warned of a new Cold War era if Russia and the West fail to agree on missile defence, in the first major news conference of his presidency.Despite the startling warning to the United States and Europe, Medvedev confounded expectations he would use the event to finally announce if he intends to seek a new Kremlin mandate in 2012 elections.Russia is increasingly worried about US plans to build missile defence facilities in ex-Communist eastern Europe and is also offended that NATO appears to have shunned its proposals for a joint missile defence shield.Medvedev told reporters that the US decision to push ahead with construction of the missile defence system despite Russia's objections will force Moscow to take retaliatory measures - something that we would very much rather not do.We would then be talking about developing the offensive potential of our nuclear capabilities,Medvedev warned.The Russian leader also reiterated an earlier threat to pull out of the new START disarmament agreement that entered into force this year if the missile shield is deployed and operated without the Kremlin's input.This would be a very bad scenario. It would be a scenario that throws us back into the Cold War era.

The United States insisted it viewed Russia as a partner on security issues rather than a threat. We have been consistent and clear for many years now that our missile defence cooperation in no way is directed at Russia, State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters.And in fact we want to cooperate on missile defence with Russia and we have been quite clear on that, Toner added.Moscow has been fighting NATO plans to deploy a system the West sees as a means of protection from nations such as Iran but Russia believes could potentially be deployed against its own defences.

Another round of tornadoes possible Tuesday...Dozens are dead and even more injured after nearly 50 tornadoes tore though parts of the Midwest on Sunday.At least 89 people were killed in Joplin, Mo., which received the worst of the severe weather.If the death toll in Joplin exceeds 115, it will be in the top 10 deadliest tornadoes in all time, none of which have occurred since 1953 according to the Storm Prediction Center.

More Severe Weather Expected Today

The area will have little time to clean up as another round of severe weather is expected again today.A complex of severe thunderstorms tracked across Joplin and southwestern Missouri this morning producing gusty winds and hail.Hail, 1 inch in diameter, was reported in the vicinity of Joplin Municipal Airport along with wind gusts to 36 mph.Additional thunderstorms will develop this afternoon across the southern Plains, potentially affecting the Joplin area again.Torrential downpours and frequent lightning associated with these thunderstorms will interfere with cleanup efforts. Localized flash flooding is likely as the ground is already saturated due to above-normal rainfall the last two months.High winds could cause additional damage and may topple cranes which are in the city helping with the cleanup.Damage was widespread across the city as homes, schools and a hospital were hit by a massive tornado.According to AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Alan Reppert, x-ray films from the hospital were found 70 miles away in a driveway.

Meanwhile, school has already been canceled on Monday as one of the Joplin School District's buildings had received catastrophic damage.Many of the dead were residents looking to seek shelter when the buildings they were in collapsed.The tornado traveled 6 miles from the west side of the city to the southeast portion. The southern edge of the city was the hardest hit. The tornado ranged from half a mile to three-quarters of a mile in width. While the exact strength of the storm is yet to be determined, it could be upwards of an EF4.According to Kathy Dennis of the American Red Cross,75% of the town is virtually gone.Scenes from the city look much like those of the tornadoes that claimed more than 300 lives in the Southeast last month.Throughout the city, roads are littered with downed trees and buildings, making them nearly impassable. Interstate 44 also had significant damage as 20 cars and tractor-trailers were overturned.According to the Associated Press, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard, while emergency crews were conducting search and rescue operations.The number of dead is expected to rise as the crews sort through the rubble.These storms are part of a larger system that triggered severe weather that killed one person in Kansas on Saturday night and caused damage from Minnesota to Texas on Sunday.At least one person was killed and 29 injured in storms that hit Minneapolis, Minn. Meanwhile, La Crosse, Wis., was also hit hard as winds tore roofs off homes and trapped residents inside.

A plume of ash from an erupting volcano in Iceland is forecast to reach Britain Monday before billowing across mainland Europe, experts said, triggering warnings of air travel disruptions.The eruption of Grimsvoetn has evoked fears of a repeat of last year's travel chaos sparked by the eruption of another Icelandic volcano which led to the biggest shutdown of European airspace since World War II.The low-level winds are ... blowing strongly towards the UK, said Peitur Arason of the Icelandic Meteorological Office, while its British counterpart warned ash could reach Scottish airspace as early as 1700 GMT Monday.Disruptions to aviation couldn't be ruled out", Britain's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said in a statement -- possibly upsetting the travel plans of US President Barack Obama.Obama is set fly from Ireland to London on Tuesday as part of a six-day European tour of four countries. After his state visit to Britain he is due to fly to France on Thursday.While lower-level winds are closer to the ground and thus will probably not manage to carry the ash as far afield, Arason said they would still affect air travel.Two days into its most powerful eruption in over a century, monitors said ash particles from the Grimsvoetn volcano had been scattered across much of Iceland, forcing the country to close its airspace Sunday.But as winds shifted and began pushing the ash to the south, the North Atlantic island nation began gradually reopening its airspace Monday afternoon and said flights would resume at its main international airport Keflavik, near the capital Reykjavik, at 6:00 pm (1800 GMT).

However, Hjordis Gudmundsdottir, a spokeswoman for Iceland's airport authority Isavia, pointed out that with a volcano still erupting one can only imagine the possibilities of the airport being shut again. Any sort of predictions are impossible.Denmark's autonomous territory Greenland, the only other place where airspace so far has been shut due to the ash, meanwhile extended the closure of some airspace until at least midnight GMT time.The main question tomorrow is if the (ash) production will affect Scotland or Northern Ireland, Gunnar Gudmundsson, a geophysicist colleague of Arason, told AFP, pointing out that there was also a danger the ash could get into a jetstream to the south of Iceland and could head to the North Sea.Gudmundsson stressed,It is not clear how this (ash) production will continue.It's very difficult to guess what will happen,he said, adding the explosive, ash-producing phase of the eruption would hopefully end within a few days.

Experts also point out that the ash from the ongoing eruption appears coarser than the very fine ash from last year's blast, and should therefore not travel as far.
European air traffic controllers in Brussels said Monday they did not expect any further airspace closures due to the ash until the end of Tuesday.A spokeswoman for EU transport commissioner Siim Kallas, however, suggested that the picture was less certain.There is at the moment a possibility of volcanic ash affecting the European airspace starting with the northwestern areas like the UK and Ireland possibly today or tomorrow,she said.France's junior transport secretary Thierry Mariani also warned that if the ash does reach Europe,flights will be cancelled.During last year's eruption of the neighbouring Eyjafjoell volcano, more than 100,000 flights were cancelled and eight million passengers stranded, dealing a harsh blow to the airline industry, particularly in Europe.The threat of a repeat sent airline shares across the continent tumbling Monday, with German Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, British Airways and Scandinavian airline SAS all seeing falls of around three to four percent.How far the ash travels will depend on the strength of the winds and the intensity of the eruption, experts agree, pointing out that historically Grimsvoetn eruptions have tended to have very brief explosive stages, with the intensity usually subsiding significantly within a few days.

However Gudmundsson pointed out,this is a much bigger eruption than the recent ones at this volcano,which is Iceland's most active -- having erupted nine times between 1922 and 2004.In fact, it is the most powerful eruption in more than a century from the volcano -- located at the heart of the country's biggest glacier, Vatnajoekull in southeastern Iceland -- with its plume initially reaching a height of 20 kilometres (12 miles).On Monday, the plume stood at around 10 kilometres, slightly above the peak of last year's eruption ash column from Eyjafjoell.We hope the ash plume will be lower tomorrow ... I think it will decline more and more, Gudmundsson said, while adding that there are still many open questions.

This isn’t China, North Korea, Iran, or Egypt. Christians are not beaten up, raped, killed, forcibly converted and exiled.I won’t even say not yet because that would smell of drama. But persecution and marginalization come in all sorts of shapes and flavours. Just consider, in one week, how the state and corporations treated serious believers.First, in Quebec, a judge ordered a Roman Catholic family to place their young children in socialized daycare, under the allegation they were not being properly socialized. The word is a fashion sound-bite rather than a genuine concept, but it looks good when used to condemn home-schooling parents. In this case, the family had already been told that they were not educating their other children properly and forced to send them to school. Now it was daycare.That home-schooled children routinely perform better in educational tests than those raised in the public system, that there are no reports at all that they do not adjust well to greater society or university, that youth illiteracy has become a problem again, and that many parents seem to believe that dressing their kids as pimps and hookers is acceptable, is all apparently irrelevant.

Here was a judge, not an educator, backed by courts, police, prisons and all of the powers of the state, telling a mother and a father that they cared too much about their children. The next step would be to forcibly remove them, thus destroying an exemplary family.But then, what is family? A highly popular sports journalist, Damian Goddard, lost his job after stating on Twitter that he disagreed with a former hockey player who supported same-sex marriage. The Catholic man’s employers deny that his dismissal had anything to do with his views, but the coincidence is somewhat jarring. Goddard did not say anything hateful or extreme, but his family will now feel the pain of unemployment. There’s pluralism and tolerance for you.In Ottawa, a crowd of as many as 18,000 people gathered to march in support of the unborn and to oppose abortion. The RCMP suggested the figure was closer to 10,000, and other experts on grid measurement thought 15,000 more accurate. Not the CBC though. They confidently explained that 5,000 people were at the peaceful gathering.
