Doctors Report Bahrain Using Nerve Gas On Demonstrators

Back on February 13, Bahrain vowed to use tougher anti-protest methods to prevent the people of the tiny kingdom from demanding government reform.All substances currently being used in Bahrain to disperse what the state deems rioters are internationally approved, military courts director Major Humood Saad told parliament at the time. He said that they were natural substances and that banning police from using them during riots, would mean that they would have to use more potentially lethal and stronger methods, such as rubber bullets, Bahraini TV reported.MP Dr Aziz Abul said that Bahraini law bans the country from using chemical warfare against enemies, but allows police to use it against the people.Doctors confirmed the Bahraini state is in fact using potentially lethal and stronger methods in order to put down calls for a more representative government.Doctors from the scene of violent anti-government protests in Yemen’s capital said that what was thought to be tear gas fired by government forces on demonstrators may have been nerve gas, which is forbidden under international law,reports the Australian.The material in this gas makes people convulse for hours. It paralyses them. They couldn’t move at all. We tried to give them oxygen but it didn’t work,said Amaar Nujaim, a field doctor who works for Islamic Relief.

Pathologist Mohammad Al-Sheikh said that some of the victims had lost muscular control and were forced to wear diapers.Reports indicate victims of nerve gas apparently used by the monarchy on its citizens were not engaged in violence. Military personnel opened fire on Tuesday night and used what was originally assumed to be tear gas to disperse a group of demonstrators who were trying to bring additional tents into the protest area outside Sanaa University, the Australian continues.Witnesses said soldiers fired warning shots into the air before shooting gas and live bullets at demonstrators, killing one and injuring at least 50.The Shi’ite majority population has been protesting against al-Khalifa, the Sunni family that has ruled Bahrain for over 200 years.Sectarian violence has erupted in the tiny kingdom between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.While the protests have primarily focused on demands for political reform and for better access to jobs, housing and education, demonstrators have also rallied against a controversial policy to extend citizenship to Sunnis from Syria, Jordan and other countries.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Saudi government had shipped dozens of tanks to Bahrain. Eyewitnesses reported seeing 15 tank carriers carrying two tanks each heading towards Bahrain” along the 25-km King Fahd causeway, which links the small island nation of Bahrain to Saudi Arabia, RIA Novosti reported on March 1.It is not clear where Bahrain acquired nerve gas. Saudi Arabia, according to the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, does not have a chemical or biological weapons program. Bahrain is not tracked by the center.Bahrain is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet and 370 offshore banking units and representative offices.

What could prompt such a dramatic fall? An oil shock that could be kick-started by Friday’s day of rage protests in Saudi Arabia or something else? According to Nenner, who studies war and peace cycles, the collapse will be initiated by a major war starting at the end of 2012 to 2013,a startling claim to which the host David Asman merely responded, wow.Excuse me? A financial strategist who has been deadly accurate in the past and has just told all his clients to get out of the market predicts a major war that will lead to a stock market collapse and the best Asman can come up with is wow? Since the hosts failed to follow up on Nenner’s astounding statement, who this war will be between and how it will start is anyone’s guess, but it seems inevitable that its roots will be in the current unrest we see spreading like wildfire across North African and the Middle East.

Biggest Bond Fund in World Dumps U.S. Treasury Bonds

Bill Gross, the manager of the biggest bond fund in the world, has forgotten more about bonds than most of us will ever learn. That is why the big move that PIMCO has just made is so unsettling. At one time PIMCO held more U.S. government debt than any other bond fund on the globe, but now news has come out that they have gotten rid of all their U.S. government-related securities. So should we be alarmed? For months Gross has been warning that the bull market in bonds is coming to an end, and now it looks like he is putting his words into action.s Gross has often publicly decried the rampant government spending that has been going on over the last several years, and apparently he has seen enough. He is taking his ball and he is going home. This really is a stunning move by PIMCO. Gross must really believe that something fundamental has shifted. Gross didn’t get to where he is today by being stupid. But so far world financial markets are taking this news in stride. Nobody seems all that alarmed that the largest bond fund in the world has dumped all of their U.S. Treasuries. But with world financial markets in such a state of chaos right now, shouldn’t we all take note when one of the biggest players in the game makes such a bold move?

Gross believes that interest rates on U.S. Treasuries are way too low right now and that they will start going up when the Federal Reserve ends the current round of quantitative easing in June. Gross has indicated that if interest rates on U.S. Treasuries go up high enough, PIMCO might get back in.But if interest rates do start going up that is going to make servicing the monolithic U.S. national debt much more expensive, and that would not be good news for U.S. government finances.But would the Federal Reserve really allow interest rates on U.S. Treasuries to go up substantially? Wouldn’t they just step in at some point and start buying U.S. government debt again? Probably.But the truth is that the Ponzi Scheme of the U.S. Treasury issuing bonds and the Federal Reserve buying them up cannot last forever as Gross noted in his March newsletter….Basically, the recent game plan is as simple as the Ohio State Buckeyes’ three yards and a cloud of dust in the 1960s. When applied to the Treasury market it translates to this: The Treasury issues bonds and the Fed buys them. What could be simpler, and who’s to worry? This Sammy Scheme as I’ve described it in recent Outlooks is as foolproof as Ponzi and Madoff until… until… well, until it isn’t.Gross also noted in his newsletter that the Federal Reserve is currently buying up about 70 percent of all new U.S. government debt.

So what is going to happen when that stops? Nobody knows for certain, but it sure is going to be interesting to watch.The market for U.S. Treasuries has not been working normally for quite some time now, and there is some legitimate doubt as to whether it will ever fully get back to normal again.Meanwhile, the sovereign debt crisis in Europe continues to get even worse.The yield on 10-year Portuguese bonds is now above 7 percent, the yield on 10-year Irish bonds is now above 9 percent and the yield on 10-year Greek bonds is now above 12 percent.Most people expect European leaders to soon come to an agreement to add billions more to existing bailout funds, but there is no guarantee that is actually going to happen.In fact, the Germans are making waves by insisting that the financially troubled nations in the EU must be willing to agree to limits on their future budget deficits. A recent article on CNBC described the situation this way….Before the Germans will agree to pump in extra cash from their taxpayers, backed by the French, they want each leader to agree to legislation at home that will limit the size of their future national deficits. The Greeks are already refusing point blank. Things may boil to the surface at an extraordinary summit on Friday.So what if an agreement can’t be reached? Could the dominoes in Europe start to fall?

Very few people actually want to see a wave of sovereign defaults in Europe, but the current situation cannot go on forever. At some point the Germans are going to get sick and tired of bailing out other members of the EU.The global addiction to debt is about to start having some very serious consequences.For decades, most of the governments of the industrialized world have been running up debt as if it would never come back to haunt them. Now the world is absolutely covered in red ink and everyone is looking for a way to solve the problem.But there is not going to be a debt jubilee to come along and save everyone. This debt bubble is either going to keep expanding or it is going to burst.At one point, at least some of the debt-ridden nations will try to inflate their way out of debt by recklessly printing money. To a certain extent that has already been going on. But it will not work. It will only cause a whole lot of inflation.This is just more evidence that any economic system based on debt is destined to fall. When we allowed a private central bank to start issuing debt-based currency in this country back in 1913 we set ourselves up to fail. As I have written about previously, the Federal Reserve should never have been allowed to come into existence, and it should have been shut down by Congress long before now.But now the United States is caught in the same debt trap that most of the other nations around the world are caught in. The global addiction to debt is going to have some very, very serious consequences. Instead of moving into a great time of peace and prosperity, everything is about to come falling apart.Things could have been different. Things did not have to turn out this way. But here we are on the edge of one of the biggest financial disasters in human history and most Americans still don’t understand what is happening.

Take the religion out of the city council meetings

Ihave to give credit to rookie Owen Sound Councillor Colleen Purdon for bringing up the issue of reciting the Lord's Prayer at the start of each council meeting. Though fellow Councillor Arlene Wright says there isn't a problem with this practice, I have to disagree with her position.I attended the inaugural meeting of the new Owen Sound Council in December. It was a great night at the Roxy Theatre where people of all ages and backgrounds gathered to celebrate our newly-elected, democratic government. That said, it wasn't quite as inclusive when a Christian religious official led the audience in the Lord's Prayer. To me, it all seemed a bit odd at a political event and one that was for the entire community. And that's coming from someone who is Christian and was raised with Christian values and traditions. I have also been to many other council chambers in Ontario and not once in the past 20-plus years has a prayer ever been recited.

I'm sure there was a reason for the prayer before such meetings way back when. Our ancestors likely thought it provided politicians with a moment to consider morals and values as they made their important decisions. But we do live in a different time and place today -- a Christian prayer shouldn't be required to make sound moral judgements or decisions.To paraphrase Pierre Trudeau's famous that the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation, I would suggest that religion has no place in the political forums of the nation. Long ago in a place far, far away, most of Canadian society was Christian (well, that's not true since the First Nations people certainly weren't but our ancestors regretfully ignored that fact). Few people were non-believers and religion was a significant part of people's daily lives. That's hardly true anymore.Coun. Wright should really take a look at her quote that we are a Christian country. That is certainly a very sweeping statement and not accurate at all today. Yes, the majority of Canadians are Christians or would say they were raised in a Christian family. Many of us though who were raised in Christian families may not necessarily be regularly practicing and may very well belong to families with other faiths through marriage etc. Then there are all the other religions that people follow from Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Taoism, and many others including the rich, spiritual traditions of our First Nations people. That's not to mention the non-believers, atheists, anti-theists, Raëlists, and more.

True, the majority of people today living in Grey-Bruce are likely of Christian heritage or beliefs but that's mainly because most new immigrants have tended not to settle in this part of Ontario. In places like Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Newmarket, Brampton, Pickering, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph, there would be no debate -- no Lord's Prayer in respect of the multicultural and multi-faith communities that they are today. Owen Sound (and for that matter Grey-Bruce) has yet to achieve the population diversity of many other parts of this province. That said, there are still many people in our community who have a non-Christian cultural heritage.While council has previously asked other "faiths" to come and lead a prayer and no one has shown up in recent time, one cannot automatically surmise that there's no interest. One must consider some key facts in the assessment of the situation. Beyond the local synagogue, all the other religious institutions in Owen Sound are Christianbased. Even if there were people coming each week, they would only be reiterating the Christian fact in most instances.As the city looks for ways to be more efficient and save tax dollars, I would suggest they just cut to the chase and forgot about staff reports and further debate. Council should vote on the matter soon and clearly consider the time and place we now live in.They may want to keep in mind the new tagline that Owen Sound has adopted, Where you want to live. To truly make that statement inviting to everyone, it may be good for council to set an inviting example and take the religion out of their meetings. By all means, a moment of reflection before dealing with important civic issues is likely a good idea. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Ahead of a meeting of defence ministers in Brussels on Thursday (10 March), Nato military planners are drafting a range of potential actions against the Gaddafi regime - including the enforcement of a no-fly zone, which could see strikes on Libyan air defences.At Nato we stand prepared for any eventuality. Nato is not looking for reasons to intervene in Libya, but as a defence and security organisation we have the necessary plans, Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a video message on Wednesday (9 March).Speaking to Brussels journalists that same day, US ambassador to Nato Ivo Daalder said that the military planning was looking at a full spectrum of possibilities, ranging from maritime and air surveillance in the international waters off the Libyan coast to several options for a no-fly zone.Mr Daalder stressed that these plans had to be drafted so that if a request to intervene is formulated, the military alliance can move quickly.

Deployment of terrestrial troops is not on the table and neither is the protection of the country's oil and gas infrastructure, one senior US official said. Any move would have to have a clean and proper legal base, preferably with a green light from the UN Security Council - which diplomats say is hard to achieve due to reluctance from China and Russia. As for the controversial no-fly zone, defence ministers are likely to discuss having all the Libyan territory covered or just Tripoli and the adjacent areas still under Colonel Gaddafi's control and whether the flying ban would apply around the clock or only during certain hours.US defence minister Robert Gates on Wednesday told congressmen that there was a lot of loose talk about some of these military options.Let's just call a spade a spade. A no-fly zone begins with an attack on Libya to destroy the air defences. That's the way you do a no-fly zone, he said ahead of his travel to Brussels.The cost of such an operation would also be considerable and without a demonstrable need for Nato to act, a clear legal basis and a firm regional support,no mission is envisaged, one senior UK official said.

Asked if the prospect of a no-fly zone was mere sabre-rattling to try and get Colonel Gaddafi to step down, the British official said: It's certainly not a bluff, the planning is for real – how we would do it, costs, number of assets deployed.The fact that Colonel Gaddafi has in past days reduced his reliance on air strikes against rebel outposts is only a beneficial by-product, the official added, but that the man is very violent and unpredictable.The Libyan strongman on Wednesday said his countrymen would take up arms against western nations if a no-fly zone were to be imposed. In an interview on Turkey's state-run TRT television, Colonel Gaddafi said such a move would lead Libyans to see that western nations' real intention is to seize Libya's oil.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - US demands for EU banking data under the so-called Swift agreement are too general and abstract for Europol to allow a proper evaluation of the necessity of those transfers, an inspection report carried out by the police agency's own supervisory body says.The EU-US deal, which entered into force in August 2010, allows anti-terrorism officials in Washington to get large sets of banking data, provided the EU joint-police body in The Hague, Europol, pre-authorises it.Giving Europol a role in this process was one of the concessions made to the European Parliament after it rejected an initial agreement.In the official version of its report, the EU supervisory body notes that out of four data transfer requests, Europol declined none, despite having serious misgivings. It was found that the US requests were too general and too abstract to allow proper evaluation of the necessity of the requested data transfers. Despite this, Europol approved each request it received,the report said.Extra information may have been given to Europol staff by the US Treasury department, but this was done orally and the supervisory body cannot certify or comment on those statements, it added.

MEPs reduce presence in Strasbourg

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Euro-deputies have voted to reduce their presence in Strasbourg slightly, cutting one of their monthly week-long sessions in the French city.While the reduction is only moderate, it is a sign of the growing frustration by a majority of MEPs at being required to make a monthly trek to the Franco-German border town and of their ambition to force a change to what many have described for years as a travelling circus.The deputies voted 357 to 253, with 40 abstentions, to cut one of their plenary meetings held in Strasbourg in 2012 and 2013 and instead combine two October sessions in a single week.It is the first time in a decade that MEPs have attempted to limit travel to the city. In 2001, MEPs did away with Friday meetings.The parliament in effect is based in Brussels, along with the European Commission, the Council of Ministers and EU diplomatic representations, as well as NGOS, journalists, corporate headquarters, trade union offices and Nato. Most MEPs despise the jaunt from the European capital to Strasbourg, but are required to do so a minimum of 12 times a year by the European treaty.French deputies in favour of retaining the double-seat for the chamber attempted to delay the vote on the reduction, but were defeated. The move, say supporters of the vote, will result in millions in savings both in cash and the carbon footprint.

UK Liberal MEP Edward McMillan-Scott, the chair of a cross-party study group lobbying in favour of a single seat for the parliament, said: Today's vote clearly shows that a majority of MEPs are fed up with the parliament's constant travel between Brussels and Strasbourg.He said he intends to put forward a proposal shortly to have the question of a single seat debated and voted on by the parliament as a whole, making use of its new right to propose changes to the treaty.The parliament has been silent on this issue for far too long, but spoke out today,he said.

Report: Deepening Rift Between Germany and Israel

According to a report which was published this week in The New York Times, a serious rift has been opened between Germany and Israel in the last few weeks.The report cited the recent vote in the UN Security Council over calling the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria illegal as one of the causes of the rift.The resolution was submitted by the Palestinian Authority but did not end up passing as the US had vetoed it. However, all the other 14 members of the Council, including Germany, voted in favor of the resolution.The report in the Times noted that the German vote in favor of condemning Israel was authorized by Chancellor Angela Merkel herself, who had unswervingly supported Israel since taking office in 2005.The report also notes that over the past few months Merkel has made it clear to the Israeli government that it cannot expect unqualified support from Berlin if it allows the conflict with the PA to drag on.The situation in Egypt should not be seen as a reason not to continue the negotiation process, the report quotes Merkel as saying at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University last month. If we sit and wait, we might face an even more difficult situation.Israeli and German officials said that Merkel’s remarks were made after difficult talks with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. The officials also said that following the German vote at the UN, Netanyahu phoned Merkel to express his disappointment.In response, Merkel said: How dare you? You are the one who has disappointed us. You haven’t made a single step to advance peace.

This conversation, which was confirmed by Israeli and German officials, reveals a deep rift between Berlin and Jerusalem, said the report.A senior Israeli government official told the Times: We are disappointed with Germany’s decision. It reflects the frustration that the peace process is not moving forwards and that we are at an impasse. Somehow in Europe, there is an expectation that if there is an impasse, it is Israel who must take the step to break it.However, Ruprecht Polenz, a conservative lawmaker and chairman of the German Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, told the Times that while the vote was highly unusual given Germany’s practice of abstaining from or voting against any UN resolutions criticizing Israel, it did not mean that Germany no longer defended Israel’s security.It means that Chancellor Angela Merkel is trying to explain to the Israeli government that with the extraordinary changes taking place across the Middle East, time is not on its side when it comes to resolving the conflict with the Palestinians, said Polenz.

The Times also noted several shifts in the relations between Germany and Israel in recent months, which began when the German Parliament unanimously passed a resolution criticizing Israel’s naval blockade of the Gaza Strip and Israel’s storming of the Mavi Marmara, which was filled with IHH terrorists who tried to break through into Gaza under the guise of peace activists, and assaulted soldiers as they entered the ship.Another shift was noted two weeks ago when the German Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, which had planned to visit Israel and the Gaza Strip, canceled the trip after the Israeli government had refused the delegation entry to Gaza.We wanted to see German-funded projects and meet UN representatives in Gaza, the Times quoted Rainer Stinner, a lawmaker from the Free Democratic Party, as saying. We had no intentions of meeting Hamas.Stinner dismissed the idea that Israel’s refusal was linked to the UN vote. Israel’s security is Germany’s priority, he said. But the settlements are not in Israel’s interests. They are counterproductive. Our criticism does not mean that Germany’s special relationship with Israel is in doubt.But despite the new found tension with Germany, seven new bilateral agreements were signed in Israel just last month at a joint meeting of Israeli and German Cabinet ministers. One of the agreements affirmed that the countries would increase their cooperation in fighting terror, while others dealt with bilateral socio-economic and cultural relations.

Netanyahu said after the agreements were signed that We are allies, Israel and Germany, and we have a great desire, on both sides, to strengthen our relationship and our bilateral cooperation. We also have the strong desire to advance peace and security in our region. Chancellor Merkel and I spoke at length about several ideas in this regard. Hariri Accuses Hizbullah of Militarizing Shiite Community

Lebanon's interim Prime Minister Saad Hariri accused Hizbullah of seeking to militarize the Shiite community, Lebanon's Daily Star reported. The accusation is a renewal of Hariri's criticism of the hermaphrodite terrorist organization turned political party's use of armed force to influence Lebanon's civic life.Addressing delegates from his Future Movement, Hariri also took aim at Hizbullah’s fierce campaign against the United Nations backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), saying it was a direct invitation to sectarian incitement. Hariri called on Hizbullah to consider the consequences of the supremacy of its weapons on national life in Lebanon.I call on them [Hizbullah] to stop this refrain and to reflect on the situation in the country as a result of... continuing attempts to impose the tutelage of arms on the political system, Hariri said.Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea told Future News television on Tuesday: The strategic decision of [Hizbullah’s] arms is in the hands of Damascus and Tehran and it influences the internal game.

Hizbullah has mounted a campaign to discredit and abolish the STL, which it dismisses as an American-Israeli tool designed to incite sectarian strife. In sharp contrast, Hariri and his March 14 allies have supported STL as the only means to uncover the truth behind his father’s killing.Hariri asked, Isn’t the campaign against the STL and the insistence on disrupting international justice into martyr [former] Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s assassination a direct invitation for incitement and a violation of the rules of national consensus? Hariri’s remarks came as his Future Movement and its allies in the March 14 coalition have been mobilizing their supporters for a heavy turnout at next Sunday’s rally in Beirut to mark six years since the movement was launched on March 14, 2005 – a month after the assassination of Hariri’s father, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri – to defend the country’s freedom, sovereignty and independence and call for a Syrian troop withdrawal.The rally is intended as a show of force amidst rising tensions between Hizbullah and its detractors ahead of the STL's forthcoming indictment. The STL has been at the heart of tension between the two camps for months, threatening to destabilize the country, especially if Hizbullah is implicated in the assassination, as is widely expected.Hariri's opposition to Hizbullah does not necessarily mean improved relations with Israel, however. Daniel Shapiro Named U.S. Ambassador to Israel

U.S. President Barack Obama officially announced on Wednesday that his top aide Daniel (Dan) Shapiro will be the next U.S. ambassador to Israel.Shapiro currently serves as senior director for the Middle East and North Africa on the National Security Council and was a key adviser on the Middle East to Obama's presidential campaign in 2008. He also played a role in Obama's outreach to the American Jewish community during the campaign.Shapiro, who is a fluent Hebrew speaker, was born in Illinois and studied at Brandeis and Harvard universities, where he earned a master’s degree in Middle Eastern Politics. He has worked closely with Dennis Ross and U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell. He has also traveled to Syria with the objective of paving the road for a peace treaty with Damascus.AFP noted that Shapiro’s nomination, as well as the fact that he is a senior White House appointee rather than a career diplomat, will likely lead to talk that Obama is seeking a direct line to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.Prior to his work on Obama’s campaign, Shapiro was a vice president at a Washington-based marketing and communications firm and held positions on the National Security staff in the Clinton administration, as well as in the offices of Senators Dianne Feinstein of California and Bill Nelson of Florida.

Shapiro’s nomination requires confirmation by the Senate. He will replace the current Ambassador to Israel, James Cunningham, who has been in Tel Aviv since August of 2008.The Politico website reported on the nomination several weeks ago, but it has only now become official.(IsraelNationalNews.com)
