PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) – Tensions rose among desperate Haitians awaiting international aid and food that began to trickle in three days after an earthquake that Haitian authorities say killed 200,000 people.Haiti's shell-shocked government gave the United States control over its main airport to bring order to aid flights from around the world and speed relief to the impoverished Caribbean nation.Trucks piled with corpses have been carrying bodies to hurriedly excavated mass graves outside the city but thousands of bodies still are believed buried under rubble.We have already collected around 50,000 dead bodies, Interior Minister Paul Antoine Bien-Aime told Reuters.We anticipate there will be between 100,000 and 200,000 dead in total, although we will never know the exact number.Some 40,000 bodies had been buried in mass graves, said Secretary of State for Public Safety Aramick Louis.If the casualty figures turn out to be accurate, the 7.0 magnitude quake that hit Haiti on Tuesday and flattened much of its capital city would be one of the 10 deadliest ever.Health Minister Alex Larsen told Reuters three-quarters of Port-au-Prince will have to be rebuilt.Three days after the earthquake struck, gangs of robbers had begun preying on survivors living in makeshift camps on streets strewn with debris and decomposing bodies, as aftershocks rippled through the hilly neighborhoods.

Authorities reported some looting and growing anger among survivors despairing over the delay in life-saving assistance. Meanwhile, the United States and other nations rushed to deliver food, water and medical supplies through a jammed airport, a smashed seaport and roads littered with rubble.

FIGHTING FOR FOOD

Hungry residents fought each other for bags of foods handed out by U.N. trucks in downtown Port-au-Prince.A senior U.N. official warned that hunger will fuel trouble if aid does not arrive promptly, although the law and order situation remains under control for the time being.There have been some incidents where people were looting or fighting for food. They are desperate, they have been three days without food or any assistance, U.N. Undersecretary General for Peacekeeping, Alain Le Roy, told The PBS NewsHour.We have to make sure that the situation doesn't unravel but for that we need very much to ensure that the assistance is coming as quickly as possible so that the people who are dying for food and medicine get them as soon as possible.The U.N. mission responsible for security in Haiti lost at least 36 of its 9,000 members when its headquarters collapsed. Its two top officials have not been accounted for.

The weakened Haitian government was in no better position to handle the crisis. The quake destroyed the presidential palace and knocked out communications and power.
President Rene Preval and Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive were living and working in the judicial police headquarters.I do not have a home, I do not have a telephone. This is my palace now, the president told Reuters in an interview. We have to make sure there is gas available ... for the trucks collecting the bodies. The hospitals are full, they are overwhelmed.

U.S. PROMISE

U.S. President Barack Obama, who pledged an initial $100 million in quake relief, promised the United States would do what it takes to save lives and get Haiti back on its feet.The scale of the devastation is extraordinary ... and the losses are heartbreaking, Obama said at the White House. Obama said the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, France, Colombia, Russia, Japan, Britain and other countries managed to fly in rescue and logistics personnel and supplies. While some aid was getting in, the White House hoped improved logistics would streamline and accelerate the effort. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was due to visit on Saturday to meet with Preval at the airport. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will travel to Haiti on Sunday. Planes and ships arrived with rescue teams, search dogs, tents, water purification units, food, doctors and telecom teams, but faced a bottleneck at the small airport. Air traffic control, hampered by serious damage suffered by the airport's tower, will now be handled by the U.S. military with backup from a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The USS Carl Vinson with 19 helicopters arrived off Haiti on Friday opening a second significant channel to deliver help. Navy helicopters had begun taking water ashore and ferrying injured people to a field hospital near the airport. The U.S. military aimed to have about 1,000 troops on the ground in Haiti on Friday and thousands more in ships offshore. The total will reach 9,000 to 10,000 troops by Monday.

NO WATER, NO SUPPLIES

The Pan American Health Organization said at least eight hospitals and health centers in Port-au-Prince had collapsed or sustained damage and were unable to function. We have no supplies. We need surgical gloves, antibiotics, antiseptic, disinfectant, said a doctor, Jean Dieudonne Occelien. We have nothing. Not even water. We have children out here with dry mouths and no water to give them.Police were scarcely seen on the streets and although some Brazilian U.N. peacekeepers were patrolling, there were reports of sporadic scavenging, some looting and one report of gunshots in downtown Port-au-Prince on Friday. At one collapsed supermarket, scores of people swarmed over the rubble to try to reach the food underneath. Just outside the Cite Soleil slum, desperate people crowded around a burst water pipe jostling to drink from the pipe or fill buckets. Raggedly dressed survivors held out their arms to reporters touring the city, begging for food and water. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Hundreds of thousands of Haitians are in desperate need of drinking water because of an earthquake-damaged municipal pipeline and truck drivers either unable or unwilling to deliver their cargo.Many drivers are afraid of being attacked if they go out, some drivers are still missing in the disaster and others are out there searching for missing relatives, said Dudu Jean, a 30-year-old driver who was attacked Friday when he drove into the capital's sprawling Cite Soleil slum.

The lack of water has become one of the greatest dangers facing Haitians in part because earthquake survivors stay outdoors all day in the heat out of fear of aftershocks and unstable buildings. While aid has started to pour in from around the world, supplies are not quickly reaching all who need them.Even before Tuesday's quake, the municipal system in this city of 3 million people was unreliable. Haiti's poorest live in shacks with no plumbing and carry their water home in jugs from public wells. Most people depend on water delivered by truckers, who get their water with the help of diesel pumps that draw from a huge underground natural reservoir.

There's no shortage of water, the water's here, the trucks are here as you see, said Jean, who said his attackers let him go unharmed after they recognized him.Since the quake, at least one water treatment plant was shuttered because of a lack of electricity. Pipes for the municipal water system are believed damaged. No water is running in Cite Soleil, home to more than a million people.Adding to the problem is that stores that have water and food to sell are not opening out of fear of violence.
Tom Osbeck, a missionary from Indiana whose Protestant-run Jesus in Haiti Ministry operates a school just north of Port-au-Prince, said a scarcity of drinking water and food is fraying the nerves of increasingly despairing survivors.Even distributing food or water is very dangerous. People are desperate and will fight to death for a cup of water,Osbeck said Friday from his home about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the center of the quake.Aid groups, businesses and governments from around the world are scrambling to meet the need.Oxfam had water supplies in Haiti left over from a 2008 storm and has managed to get some 2,000 and 5,000-liter tanks into the capital city. U.S. military officials say helicopters are ferrying in water and other supplies from the USS Carl Vinson. Procter & Gamble Co. is sending 3 million water-purifying packets along with cash donations for earthquake relief.

Rebecca Gustafson, part of the disaster assistance team of USAID, said international agencies are assessing the best places for community water treatment centers. She said much of the focus of international aid for now is on rescue and recovery efforts.Once that wave subsides, in the coming days you'll see more and more aid coming in, she said.While government agencies and troops worked to move supplies out of the jammed airport, some Haitians and far smaller organizations worked on their own to get aid to thirsty, hungry people.Milero Cedamou, the 33-year-old owner of a small water delivery company, twice drove his small tanker truck 10 miles outside Port-au-Prince, paying $25 for each fill-up and then returned to a tent camp where thousands of homeless people were living.This is a crisis of unspeakable magnitude, it's normal for every Haitian to help, Cedamou said.This is not charity.Jean Ponce, a 36-year-old mason, was among 200 people holding plastic buckets who clustered around the truck — emblazoned with the slogan Wait for God on its side — when it returned. He lost one of his children in the quake and said the bucketful he collected would be the first drinkable water his four surviving children tasted since the disaster struck.This is nearly like a miracle, Ponce said. Flooding rains bring rare waterfalls to Australia's Uluru

SYDNEY (AFP) – Heavy rains which flooded parts of Australia's vast desert centre have brought rare waterfalls spilling from the iconic monolith Uluru, or Ayers Rocks, officials said Saturday.The deluge, which swept across much of the continent's east after a tropical cyclone last month, prompted a wave of green in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, home to the giant red rock.It's something that a lot of people actually wouldn't experience, seeing the park at this time of year when it is green and the plants are really shooting and the flowers are coming out, said park manager Christine Burke.It's a very exciting time at the park now to see what happens after we have a good rain and it looks beautiful, she told state radio.

Situated near the centre of the semi-arid Sturt Desert, Uluru typically receives little more than 12 inches of rain a year, and January is its hottest, driest month, with temperatures topping to 45 degrees Celsius (113 F).Conditions are overcast, on average, just five days of the year.Uluru is a sacred part of Aboriginal tribes' creation mythology and one of the nation's most recognisable landmarks.Australia is currently mulling a ban on climbing the rock on cultural and safety grounds. Signs at the site ask people not to climb it out of respect for the Aboriginal community, but one-third of the 350,000 annual visitors still do so.

Kenyan flood death toll rises to 38: Red Cross

NAIROBI (Reuters) – Floods in Kenya after heavy rains have killed 38 people and forced more than 40,000 from their homes, the Red Cross said Thursday.While rainfall has been minimal in many parts of east Africa's biggest economy this week, the impact of heavy downpours since December is still wreaking havoc.Flash floods in the coastal district of Malindi Thursday caused a river to change course and submerge 100acres of maize crops, a staple food in Kenya, the Red Cross said.Livelihoods have been greatly affected and are in dire need of humanitarian aid, it said.The arid northern region of Turkana, which has been suffering from drought, was badly hit. Scientists have discovered the earliest known Hebrew writing - an inscription dating from the 10th century B.C., during the period of King David's reign. The breakthrough could mean that portions of the Bible were written centuries earlier than previously thought. (The Bible's Old Testament is thought to have been first written down in an ancient form of Hebrew.) Until now, many scholars have held that the Hebrew Bible originated in the 6th century B.C., because Hebrew writing was thought to stretch back no further. But the newly deciphered Hebrew text is about four centuries older, scientists announced this month. It indicates that the Kingdom of Israel already existed in the 10th century BCE and that at least some of the biblical texts were written hundreds of years before the dates presented in current research, said Gershon Galil, a professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel, who deciphered the ancient text. BCE stands for before common era, and is equivalent to B.C., or before Christ. The writing was discovered more than a year ago on a pottery shard dug up during excavations at Khirbet Qeiyafa, near Israel's Elah valley. The excavations were carried out by archaeologist Yosef Garfinkel of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. At first, scientists could not tell if the writing was Hebrew or some other local language. Finally, Galil was able to decipher the text. He identified words particular to the Hebrew language and content specific to Hebrew culture to prove that the writing was, in fact, Hebrew. It uses verbs that were characteristic of Hebrew, such as asah (did) and avad (worked), which were rarely used in other regional languages,Galil said.Particular words that appear in the text, such as almanah (widow) are specific to Hebrew and are written differently in other local languages.The ancient text is written in ink on a trapezoid-shaped piece of pottery about 6 inches by 6.5 inches (15 cm by 16.5 cm). It appears to be a social statement about how people should treat slaves, widows and orphans. In English, it reads (by numbered line):

Mexico to send 2,000 more police to violent city

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – A Mexican official says 2,000 more agents will be sent to the northern border city of Ciudad Juarez as federal police take the lead in the crackdown against drug traffickers there.Mexican federal police commissioner Facundo Rosas says the officers will arrive in the next few days. He says they will coordinate the work of local police officers and the 6,000 soldiers deployed to Ciudad Juarez as part of President Felipe Calderon's crackdown on drug cartels.

Ciudad Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz says federal agents will also be in charge of the city's emergency response center.Military officers and state police had been coordinating the security operations in the city across from El Paso, Texas. More than 2,500 people were killed in Ciudad Juarez in 2009.

Air Al Qaeda: Are Latin America's drug cartels giving Al Qaeda a lift? By Scott Baldauf – Fri Jan 15, 11:29 am ET

Johannesburg, South Africa – It's known as the Coca Cola plane. In early November, drug traffickers landed a Boeing 727 in the Malian desert in Gao state and offloaded between 10 and 12 million tons of cocaine. Then, rather than fly it back across the Atlantic to Latin America, they simply burnt it, treating it like a used Coke can. The terrain of northern Mali is stark desert, and a haven for Islamist insurgents with close ties to Al Qaeda. Initially, investigators thought the plane had crashed in the desert on take off. But now, based on the fact that the plane was largely intact, many experts suspect that the drug cartels – perhaps in coordination with their Al Qaeda partners – burnt the plane deliberately. That shows you the strength of the drug cartels, and how much money they have,says Rinaldo Depagne, a West Africa expert at the International Crisis Group in Dakar, Senegal.It’s like a plastic [Coca Cola] bottle to them. When you are done with it, you just throw it away.According to UN reports, nearly 60 percent of the cocaine sold in Europe transits through weak West African states such as Mali, Niger, Mauritania, and Guinea Bissau – a flow of cash and contraband that undermines the credibility of each country’s ability to govern itself.As many of these same countries are now becoming a haven for a shadowy group calling itself Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), there are growing concerns that Islamist radicals and Latin American drug cartels may be working together, both to enrich themselves and to weaken the law enforcement capability of those West African states.At this point Al Qaeda in the Maghreb seems to be nothing more than just facilitators, but more and more we see evidence of them working together, says an official for the US military at the Africom command center in Stuttgart, speaking on background. But it is safe to assume, the official adds, that Al Qaeda is profiting from the drug trafficking trade going through its areas of the Sahara. A 2008 Department of Homeland Security report, obtained by Reuters, warned of a growing fleet of rogue aircraft – at least 10 aircraft including executive jets, twin-engine turboprops, and aging Boeing 727s, crisscrossing the Atlantic. The DEA also told Reuters that all aircraft seized in West Africa had departed Venezuela.

When it comes to traffickers use of planes between West Africa and Latin America, US military experts say there is a clear potential threat to American security.We know what those planes are carrying across the Atlantic to Africa. But what goes back [on those planes] to [Latin] American shores? says one US military official.You know what the condition of the [US] southern borders are. You see the beginning of a process of thought.Al Qaeda funded by drug protection money?If Al Qaeda is getting into the drug trade, it would not be the first terrorist organization to do so. Through much of the 1990s and 2000s, the Colombian leftist rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), has largely funded its 40-year insurgency through kidnapping and cocaine production. The Taliban were also thought to have turned to the opium trade in order to finance its own buildup of arms in the southern part of Afghanistan. The motives of Al Qaeda would seem to be very different from those of the drug traffickers. Al Qaeda is an insurgent group fighting for a political goal, perhaps to defend its land or to impose its ideology. Drug traffickers are merely in it for money. But in the West African Sahara, there's growing evidence that the two have found common cause in using the vast unpatrolled desert areas for transporting drugs up north to Europe, and as bases for military operations and training. Terrorists are looking at an ideology, they are fighting for their land,says another US military official at Africom.Traffickers don’t have an allegiance to an area, they change their routes, they change their methods, far faster than the law enforcement in a country can keep up with.Latin American cartels have been smuggling drugs to Europe via Africa since the 1990s. But For West African nations, keeping up with the traffickers and now the insurgents may seem an impossible task. In 2006, a UN report found that the annual value of smuggled cocaine through West Africa is more than twice the gross domestic product of Guinea Bissau. US military trainers help outYet, confronting the traffickers and the insurgents is precisely what the US military hopes these nations will do in the very near future. In the past two years, American military trainers have increased their visits to West Africa, and conducted joint training exercises under Operation Enduring Freedom – Trans-Sahel Initiative. On land, US Army trainers – many of them Special Forces commandos – train African soldiers in counterinsurgency methods, and the US government has begun to provide the army of Mali, Niger, and Mauritania with basic arms and equipment, something these nations can ill-afford to buy on their own.In addition, US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents have ramped up their efforts in West Africa, trying to help nations with weak law enforcement capabilities to rein in drug traffickers. Last month, three suspects from Mali were extradited from Ghana to the United States to face charges of offering Al Qaeda protection to move cocaine from West Africa, through the Sahara, and up to Spain. The three suspects, Oumar Issa, Harouna Toure, and Idriss Abelrahman, told DEA informants that they were members of Al Qaeda’s North African branch, and they could protect drug shipments at a fee of $4,200 per kilo.

Given the scale of what drug traffickers are willing to pay – and what Al Qaeda apparently earns for its part of the business – the challenge of stopping the drug trade through West Africa will be immense, say analysts.It is one thing for the US military to train a man to fight an insurgent. It is quite another thing to put that man out in the field, earning little pay, where drug traffickers or radical Islamists can offer them bribes or other incentives to look the other way when it suits them.These traffickers are shipping huge amounts of cocaine so they have lots of money,says Depagne.This is a huge threat for weak states of West Africa. When you compare the money of a drug cartel to the budget of Mauritania, or to the salary of a policeman in Niger – who receives less than $200 a month – it’s easy to see what will happen.As for Al Qaeda,if they manage to get that kind of money, it will put them on another level,says Depagne.I don’t know if you can find any evidence proving a link between Al Qaeda and the drug traffickers, unless you are CIA. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why they would want to work together. To do terrorism, you need money, and what are you going to do in the deserts of Mali to make money. You take money where it is. You work with the drug traffickers.

LA VERRIERE, France – The man she married is French, her four children were born in France and she speaks French with only a trace of her native Arabic tongue. Faiza Silmi contends her clothes — a head-to-toe robe and filmy tissue covering her face — are the reason France has denied her citizenship in her adopted land.The 32-year-old Moroccan may soon be facing an even fiercer blow. A top French lawmaker submitted a draft law this week that would ban such Islamic dress anywhere in public, a measure that would set a European precedent and trap thousands of women between their religious convictions and the law of the land.They say I'm too attached to my religion, Silmi told The Associated Press at an empty restaurant near her home southwest of Paris, her large eyes peering from a slit in her veil. Lots of Christians live in Morocco and we don't make them wear scarves.Unlike Muslim headscarves, full-body, face-covering robes are a rare sight in the streets of France, home to an estimated 5 million Muslims, the largest such population in western Europe. France's main Muslim leaders have declared that Islam does not require women to cover their faces with niqabs or burqas.In a country whose national emblem is Marianne, a bare-chested woman, there is deepening concern over the all-encompassing garb, often black or brown and worn with gloves, attire typical in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states. Here, it is widely viewed as a gateway to radical Islam, an attack on gender equality and other French values, and a gnawing away at the nation's secular foundation.President Nicolas Sarkozy opened the door to a possible ban in June, telling a parliament session in Versailles that such dress is not welcome in France. A parliamentary panel set to work in July on a six-month mission gathering information on the garments.On Tuesday, the head of Sarkozy's conservative UMP party in parliament's lower house, Jean-Francois Cope, jumped the gun before the panel's report was finished, and filed draft legislation on a ban. No one may, in spaces open to the public and on public streets, wear a garment or an accessory that has the effect of hiding the face, the draft text reads.The document cites public security concerns, thus includes all face-covering clothes, in a bid to head off challenges from those who might claim such a law would violate constitutional rules on individual rights — a major concern along with how such a law would be enforced. It foresees fines for those who break the law.

The initiative, unlikely to go to debate before spring, would be the second time France targets Muslim dress. A 2004 law born in acrimony bans Muslim headscarves and other "ostentatious" religious symbols in the classrooms of French public schools. Sarkozy's party dominates parliament and the president reiterated Wednesday his wish for a law on full veils, though it's too early to say whether it will pass.Europe's growing Muslim population has bred tension across the continent. Wariness is pervasive since deadly attacks in Madrid in 2004 and in London in 2005 by Islamic radicals living in Europe. And some non-Muslims sense a threat by a foreign culture to their way of life. It took only four minarets on Switzerland's 200 mosques to push the Swiss to vote no to minarets in a November referendum.However, France, which wants an Islam tailored to the West, would be the only western European country to target the all-enveloping robes and niqabs, the cloth hiding the lower face.We're going to become the laughing stock of democracies should France ban the clothing, said Raphael Liogier, a sociology professor who runs the Observatory of the Religious in Aix-en-Provence.He is among critics who say a ban would be a violation of basic rights and transgression of the fundamental principles of our republic.Muslim leaders of all tendencies have warned that a ban risks stigmatizing all Muslims, and anti-terrorism judge Marc Trevidic told Sunday's Journal du Dimanche that a ban will maybe push impulsive people to want to commit attacks.

However, Andre Gerin, who heads the parliamentary panel, says the full-body veil is an attempt to instrumentalize Islam for political ends via a fundamentalist and barbaric ideology that oppresses women.Gerin, a communist who served for years as mayor of Venissieux, a suburb of Lyon known as a haunt for Muslim fundamentalists, insists the phenomenon is growing.But at Friday prayers recently at a mosque northwest of Paris in Argenteuil, considered a bastion for Salafists who adopt a literal reading of the Quran, only a handful of fully veiled women were seen. Some expressed fear of a ban.We won't be able to leave the house, said Oumeima Naceri, a 19-year-old convert draped in black garments, including a filmy sitar veil covering even her eyes.That frightens us enormously ... It's like asking us to go naked.

Official statistics on burqas are impossible to gather. A 2004 report by a French intelligence service put the number of women in full veils at some 4,000. More than a quarter had converted to Islam, some experts estimate. Silmi, the Moroccan woman seeking French citizenship, began veiling herself completely only after coming to France in 2000. She said she and her husband Karim, who was born in Paris to Moroccan parents and has French citizenship, discovered a deepening of their faith through books and cassette recordings not available in Morocco. She insists her partner did not impose the veil on her — and says she is in the process of divorcing him after 10 years of marriage. Silmi was refused French citizenship for what authorities said was her failure to assimilate into French culture. Assimilation is most often defined by a candidate's ability to speak French, though not in her case.

In each of three reports following interviews with Silmi, officials described her clothing. Her pro bono lawyer, Ronald Sokol, an American living in France, said that is what kept her from becoming French. Silmi lost an appeal to the Council of State, in June 2008, which ruled that she adopted a radical religious practice incompatible with essential values of the French community. She has now turned to the European Court of Human Rights. A woman must cover herself. It's writtem in the Quran, Silmi told AP. Lawmaker Daniele Hoffman-Rispal, member of the parliamentary panel, said she sees women clad in all-encompassing robes on market days in her district in eastern Paris and is bothered that they have a right to look at me ... see my eyes, my smile but she cannot look at them. But if a ban were passed,Will we hire dozens of police to put them on street corners? she asks. She worries, too, about women who could become shut-ins to avoid getting caught. As for Silmi, she said she will consult a Muslim sage on the Internet about what to do should a legal ban be passed.
If he tells me not to remove my veil, I prefer to return to Morocco rather than break French law, she said.

QUITO, Ecuador – It appears that high tides in Ecuador have been tossing a lot more than seaweed onto the shore: Hundreds of bathers have scooped up what look like U.S. coins, as well as rings, bracelets, necklaces and other silver- and gold-colored jewelry.The Teleamazonas TV station broadcast images Friday of beachgoers collecting the flotsam at the El Muercielago beach in the Pacific port city of Manta.One woman told the TV station she collected a total of $24.50.No one could say where the objects came from. Manta police did not return calls seeking information.

Teleamazonas reported the treasure-bearing tide began Wednesday and lasted through Thursday.Manta lifeguard Felix Burgos told the station a similar high tide washed coins ashore five years ago.

NAOUR, Jordan – A roadside bomb exploded Thursday near a convoy of Israeli diplomats traveling through Jordan on their way home for the weekend, but no one was hurt, officials in both countries said.Ambassador Daniel Nevo was not in the convoy, Israeli officials in Jerusalem said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

It was the first time a roadside bomb was used in an attack in Jordan, where suicide bombings and shootings have targeted foreigners in recent years. The method is widespread in neighboring Iraq.The sundown attack also exposed a security breach for Israeli diplomats, who are usually escorted by security personnel from both countries and use different routes and departure times during their occasional travels in Jordan.The explosion ripped through the right side of a curvy road cutting through hilly villages on the western outskirts of the capital, Amman. The blast left a large hole about 3 feet (1 meter) deep and damaged a highway guardrail.

Jordanian forensic officers were inspecting the site of the attack, a security official said. The area is halfway from the King Hussein-Allenby Bridge at the border.Israel and Jordan, which signed a peace treaty in 1994, maintain close security cooperation and cordial diplomatic ties.But anti-Israeli sentiments have been running high as the Israel-Palestinian conflict drags on without a solution. A significant portion of Jordan's population is made up of Palestinians.The U.S. Embassy in Amman issued a statement recommending that American citizens avoid the Dead Sea Highway from Amman to the Dead Sea until further notice.Police were trying to determine the size and complexity of the bomb, which appears to have exploded remotely, the official said, insisting on anonymity because he is not allowed to release details during early stages of investigation.Israeli media reported that one or two roadside bombs exploded as the Israeli convoy passed, but the timing of the remote-controlled detonation was off and the vehicles were not seriously damaged. The convoy later crossed the bridge to Israel, Israel TV said.The section of road, which is less monitored than the area closer to the bridge, is used by tourists and other travelers visiting the Dead Sea.After the explosion, the convoy entered a small Jordanian army post as soldiers searched the area, Israel's Channel 2 TV said.

Jordanian police sealed off the main road leading to the area, sending large numbers of firefighters, police and ambulances to the scene.Information Minister Nabil Sharif said in a brief statement that an explosive device went off on the side of the road leading to the Jordan Valley as some civilian vehicles were passing by, including two Israeli diplomatic cars.He said there were no injuries, and authorities have launched an investigation.Two Jordanian security officials said the attackers may have thought that the Israeli ambassador to Jordan was in the convoy.

In Amman, Israeli Embassy spokeswoman Merav Horsandi confirmed there was a blast next to a convoy carrying embassy employees.All I can say now is that everyone is fine, she said. In Jerusalem, Israeli officials said four passengers and two security guards were in the convoy and they were heading to Israel for the weekend.
There have been several attempted attacks on Israeli citizens in Jordan in past years. In 2001, Israeli jeweler Yitzhak Shnir, 51, was gunned down in Amman. An unknown group claimed responsibility, saying Shnir was an Israeli spy. In 2005, al-Qaida in Iraq said after its triple hotel blasts in Amman that one of the targets included a hotel known to be patronized by Israelis. JERUSALEM – A high-level delegation of Roman Catholic bishops criticized Israeli polices in Arab sectors of Jerusalem on Thursday and called for more contacts between ordinary Israelis and Palestinians.The group of eight bishops from North America and Europe said violence, insecurity, the route of Israel's West Bank separation barrier, home demolitions and other policies threaten peace prospects and endanger the dwindling Christian presence in the Holy Land.The issue of Jerusalem — home to holy sites for Jews, Christians and Muslims — remains the most flammable in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Palestinians claim the city's eastern sector as the capital of their future state. Israel, which captured east Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war, insists the city will never be divided.In a statement issued at the end of their annual visit, the bishops called for the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

For us, this is not merely about politics; it is an issue of basic human rights, the statement said.During their visit, the bishops visited Christian institutions in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, talked with Palestinians about their lives and listened to presentations from Israeli and Palestinian experts. It was unclear if they met with ordinary Jewish Israelis.Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev disputed the group's criticisms of Israel's east Jerusalem policies.Only since reuniting Jerusalem in 1967 have the holy places of all faiths been protected under law and freedom of religion has prevailed, he said.Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the bishops spoke of watching Palestinian children cross Israeli checkpoints to return from school and the humiliation Palestinians say they feel at such places. Israel says the crossings are necessary to prevent attacks.Bishop Gerald Kicanas, vice president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the human rights situation for Palestinians in the Holy Land has gotten worse during the 20 years that he has been visiting the region.Kicanas, also the bishop of Tucson, Arizona, said Israeli and Palestinian youth lack opportunities to meet each other.Unless they find a way to engage one another, to meet one another as ordinary human beings, the situation will remain grave, he said.

AMMAN, Jordan – Jordan's tourism minister said Thursday that her country was seeking the help of Western nations to regain possession of the Dead Sea Scrolls Israel seized from a Jerusalem museum during the 1967 Mideast war.Maha Khatib said Jordan has given up hope that Israel would directly give back the more than 2,000-year-old scrolls and now hoped Western nations would return them to the Arab kingdom when they host them in exhibitions.Israel rejected the Jordanian claim to the scrolls, which include the earliest known version of portions of the Hebrew Bible and have shed important light on Judaism and the beginnings of Christianity. Their origin is the subject of an insular, but notoriously heated, academic debate.

They will next be exhibited in Milwaukee, WI, starting Jan. 22.

Jordan says Israel seized 14 scrolls kept in a museum in the eastern sector of Jerusalem when its army occupied that Jordanian-controlled part of the city along with the West Bank in the 1967 war. Israel annexed eastern Jerusalem soon after the war and now says the entire city is its unified, eternal capital.In Jerusalem, foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Jordan's claims were ridiculous and that the scrolls were an intrinsic part of Jewish religion, culture and history and have no connection to Jordan. This claim is totally unfounded, he said.But Khatib said: The Dead Sea Scrolls are owned and will always be owned by the government of Jordan and we'll continue emphasizing our right to get them back.She told The Associated Press: We know very well that the Israelis will not give them back.Jordan, she added, would contact countries where the scrolls are put on exhibition and ask them not to return them to Israel, but to Jordan instead.We are very keen on getting them (the scrolls) by reminding different countries of the international accords on cultural wealth they signed, she said, citing the 1954 Hague Convention governing the protection of cultural property during armed conflict.

Earlier this month, Canada refused a Jordanian request to stop the scrolls' return to Israel, after they were displayed at a Toronto museum. It also refused a similar request made by the Palestinian Authority, according to Canadian diplomats.The scrolls were found in caves near the Dead Sea between 1947 and 1956.

Hamas urges Egypt to stop building Gaza wall

BEIRUT (AFP) – Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal urged Egypt on Friday to stop building an underground wall along its border with Gaza, which the Islamist group has said would further choke the impoverished enclave.We call on the Egyptian leadership to stop building the iron wall... as walls are erected between enemies, not brothers, the exiled Palestinian Islamist leader said at a conference in Beirut in support of resistance groups.How can the national security of any state be used as an excuse to build a wall between Arab brothers? he asked.Since Hamas seized power in the Gaza Strip in 2007 it has relied on smuggling tunnels under the border with Egypt to defy the Israeli blockade and its leaders have used trips to Cairo to escape international isolation.But after years of largely ignoring tunnel smuggling -- which primarily brings in much-needed household goods but is also used by Hamas to import weapons and cash -- Egypt has begun building a massive underground wall.

The United States and Israel have voiced support for the wall, arguing that it will stop weapons smuggling.Cairo -- which states support for Palestinians and has long mediated between both Israel and Hamas and among Palestinian factions -- has only implicitly admitted constructing the iron barrier and has provided no details on its size.
