JERUSALEM (AFP) – With a panoply of candidates to choose from, Israel's right-wing Likud party will vote on Monday for a list to run alongside Benjamin Netanyahu in February elections when it is poised to sweep to victory.Former army chief of staff Moshe Yaalon, a throng of former military and police top brass, high-profile politicians, a top comedian and a basketball icon are all vying for a place in the Likud election line-up.The list includes the son of former prime minister Menachem Begin, Benny, and the grandson of the founder of the right-wing Zionist movement Zeev Jabotinsky, who has the same name.Nearly 100,000 Likud members will be asked to choose from more than 250 names, while Netanyahu -- a former prime minister -- has already been elected to head the party.The Likud elections are crucial because the team the Likud members pick will most likely be at the helm of the state after the elections, political analyst Raanan Gissin said.Recent polls have shown that the hawkish party, which now has only 12 seats in the 120-member parliament, may win as many as 34 on February 10, becoming the largest party and placing Netanyahu on course to become premier again.There is a great feeling in the party ahead of the general elections. But some of the high-profile candidates may prove to be an impediment to Netanyahu's ability to rule if elected prime minister.Netanyahu is recruiting many stars and that may prove very significant in the elections, said Gideon Doron, a political science professor at Tel Aviv university.But people such as Yaalon, Begin and Jabotinsky have a extreme-right ideology and may reject compromises. This may create friction and trouble when Netanyahu will come under pressure by the United States or Europe to push this or that peace initiative.Likud's dramatic rise in popularity is due both to its candidate line-up and to the diplomatic and economic challenges facing Israel, Gissin said.The party is seen to owe much of its popularity to declining support for the ruling centrist Kadima, tarnished by corruption scandals involving outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his government's failures in the 2006 Lebanon war.The failure to curb rocket fire from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, the fear of a new confrontation with the Shiite Hezbollah movement in Lebanon and Iran's nuclear drive have further boosted Likud's popularity.Netanyahu rejects the current US-backed Mideast peace talks and has put forward his own peace plan calling for the development of the Palestinian economy before any talk on creating a Palestinian state.His plan was criticised by Kadima chairman and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni who heads the current peace talks with the Palestinians which have made little visible progress since their launch late last year.Israel has also been affected by the global economic crisis, and this has bolstered Netanyahu's candidacy since the former premier and finance minister enjoys broad acknowledgment as a financial expert.If Likud does not drag itself to an internal argument and if Netanyahu does not make any major mistakes, they will win the general elections by default, Gissin said.

AMMAN - After two postponements, Jordan will host the Euro-Med Ministerial Conference on Water December 22-24 at the Dead Sea, a Foreign Ministry official said on Thursday.The new date was set in coordination between Jordan and the Joint French-Egyptian presidency of the Union for the Mediterranean, the ministry's spokesperson, Nassar Habashenh, told The Jordan Times, adding that they are in the process of sending invitations to EU member states.The conference was originally slated to take place on October 28 at the Dead Sea, but the government decided to postpone the event until a settlement is reached over the Arab League's participation and membership in the Union for the Mediterranean.In a recent EU meeting in Marseilles, it was agreed on holding the conference later this month after reaching a settlement between the Barcelona Process member states over the issue. But the event had to be delayed again pending coordination with all participants over the best timing, EU sources announced then.French Ambassador to Jordan Denys Gauer said in a previous statement to the press that the Kingdom will be among the main beneficiaries of the conference which will define the main challenges and difficulties as well as solutions to address the water shortage.

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israel can no longer expect blank cheques from Washington once president-elect Barack Obama's administration takes over in January, a former US ambassador to the Jewish state said on Sunday.The era of the blank cheque is over, said Martin Indyk, director of the Centre for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institute who is considered close to incoming secretary of state Hillary Clinton.The Obama administration intends to be engaged, using diplomacy to try to bring about a safer and more peaceful place, that is different from the seven years of the (George W.) Bush administration, he said on public radio.President Obama surely will want to work with Israel on this (Middle East) agenda. But there are obligations on both sides (Israel and the Arabs). Both sides will have to respect these obligations, Indyk said.Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert held a long conversation with Clinton earlier this week and welcomed her nomination in Obama's team, his office said. She vowed to work for peace and stability in the Middle East.

Reports: Tribune Co. weighing bankruptcy filing DEC 7,08

CHICAGO – Tribune Co., owner of the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune, other newspapers and the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field, has hired financial advisers ahead of a possible filing for bankruptcy-court protection, according to reports on Sunday.The Chicago Tribune reported its parent hired investment bank Lazard Ltd. and law firm Sidley Austin as it considers its financial options.It's an uncertain and difficult environment, Tribune Co. spokesman Gary Weitman said in a Chicago Tribune story published on the newspaper's Web site Sunday night. We haven't made any decision. We're looking at all of our options.Weitman did not immediately respond to requests from The Associated Press for comment. Lazard spokeswoman Judi Mackey said the firm declined to comment on the reports.The Wall Street Journal, quoting people familiar with the matter, said a bankruptcy filing could come as early as this week. It said Tribune Co.'s cash flow may not be enough to cover nearly $1 billion in interest payments that are due this year.Tribune was taken private last December in an $8.2 billion buyout led by real estate mogul Sam Zell.Last month, Tribune said its debt load increased to $11.8 billion at the end of the third quarter, up from $9.4 billion a year ago. It posted a loss of $121.6 million for the third quarter as newspaper advertising revenue dwindled.The company had originally expected its newspaper and broadcast revenue to cover interest and principal on its debt. But plummeting advertising revenue at most Tribune newspapers this year has forced Tribune to cut costs, including staff, and to sell assets to raise money.The company has a Monday deadline on $70 million of unsecured debt it took on before the Zell deal, the Chicago Tribune reported. CHICAGO – An influential senator drafting a multibillion-dollar bailout for Detroit's Big Three automakers said Sunday that the head of General Motors should step down, while President-elect Barack Obama accused car industry executives of a persistent head-in-the sand approach to long-festering problems.Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., chairman of the Banking Committee, said GM CEO Rick Wagoner has to move on as part of a government-run restructuring that should be a condition of financial life support for the auto industry.I think you have got to consider new leadership, Dodd said on CBS Face the Nation. Criticized for staying on the sidelines until now, Obama for the first time voiced support for bailout legislation being drafted in Congress.The sharp criticism from Obama and Dodd reflects deep frustration on Capitol Hill at what many lawmakers regard as years of missteps, mistakes and arrogance by the Big Three automakers. At the same time, Washington is deeply worried about soaring unemployment — 533,000 jobs were lost in November alone — and the impact of an auto industry collapse on a nation already deep in recession.

Behind the scenes, House and Senate aides were hammering out legislation that would dole out billions to automakers within a week — but yank back the money if a government-run board and overseer named by President George W. Bush decided the companies weren't taking steps to overhaul themselves and become viable. A congressional aide outlined the emerging measure on condition of anonymity because it is not yet completed.The plan would draw the emergency aid from an existing loan program meant to help the automakers build fuel-efficient vehicles. After American International Group Inc, or AIG, reached two major bailout agreements totaling $152.5 billion in taxpayer dollars, the company is stepping up its dealings with Islamic finance by offering Shariah-compliant homeowners insurance to the U.S. –outraging critics over AIG's support of a discriminatory ideology, that is against equality, and that is against liberty.Specifically, while American taxpayers are loaning money to AIG and hold 80 percent equity interest in the company, AIG owns a Shariah-compliant insurance company, offering accident, health, motor, personal contents, property and casualty insurance coverage. Now Risk Specialists Companies, Inc., or RSC, a subsidiary of AIG Commercial Insurance, is introducing its Shariah-compliant Takaful Homeowners Policy to the U.S., according to a Dec. 1 AIG announcement. The new insurance is said to be the first installment in a series of Shari'ah-compliant (Takaful) product offerings in the U.S.The Shariah-compliant policy is underwritten through RSC member company A.I. Risk Specialists Insurance, Inc., in conjunction with Lexington Insurance Co. and in association with AIG Takaful Enaya. Takaful is based on Quranic principles of Ta'awon – or mutual assistance. The term originates from the Arabic word Kafalah, meaning joint guarantee. Similar to mutual insurance, where policyholders own a stake in the organization, members of a Takaful group pool their resources to help the neediest member, and losses are divided among them. Cooperation is key in the system, and proponents often point to Surah Al-Maidah, verse 2 of the Quran, to explain the concept. It states: Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancor.According to Ernst & Young's 2008 World Takaful Report, the Shariah-compliant insurance had an estimated $5.7 billion global market in 2006 with more than 130 providers. The market is estimated to exceed $10 billion by 2010. The introduction of Takaful products in the U.S. represents an important and emerging growth opportunity for AIG Commercial Insurance, President Matthew F. Power of Risk Specialists Companies, Inc. said.We are pleased to offer socially responsible solutions to this segment of the domestic market.

Unlike mutual insurance, Takaful includes Shariah-compliant stipulations. It prohibits investment in companies that violate Islamic law by selling or promoting products such as alcohol, tobacco, pornography, gambling and even pork. Critics claim Shariah-compliant businesses are even opening doors to U.S. funding of Islamic extremism. Tainted Irish pork may have reached 25 countries: official DEC 7,08

DUBLIN (AFP) - Contaminated Irish pig meat may have been exported to up to 25 countries, Ireland's chief vet has said, as shops at home and abroad cleared pork from their shelves amid fears of a cancer link.We believe it's in the order of 20 to 25 countries. It's certainly less than 30, Paddy Rogan said on Sunday in comments quoted by the Irish media.His remarks came after ministers Saturday ordered all pig meat products from the Republic of Ireland to be withdrawn as dioxins, which may cause cancer, were found in slaughtered pigs thought to have eaten contaminated feed.

The recall involved products processed since September 1 and has caused panic in the Emerald Isle, where many families would have been buying their traditional Christmas ham in the coming days.Ireland is a major exporter of pork, with Britain by far the biggest market followed by Germany, France, Russia and Japan. Other major export destinations include China and Hong Kong.Officials and police are investigating the possible source of the contaminated feed, a plant run by Millstream Power Recycling Limited near Fenagh, County Carlow in southwest Ireland.David Curtin, a firm spokesman, said what was under investigation was oil used in machinery used to dry the recycled bread products and dough which are ingredients in the feed.He denied that any oil or other substance had been added to the feed during processing.Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen stepped in to try and calm the situation, saying it was important his government took whatever measures are necessary to build confidence in the industry for the future.The problem has been located. The continuing examination and inquiries will proceed and we must take action to reinforce confidence to the public, and obviously also allow the industry to move on from this point, Cowen said.

The crisis is another blow to recession-hit Ireland, where about 5,000 people work in a pig meat industry which exported 129,000 tonnes worth 368 million euros (468 million dollars) in 2007, according to official figures.Irish people are being told not to eat domestically-reared pork meat, bacon, pork sausages, sausage meat, gammon steaks, offal from pigs, salami, ham, sausage rolls, black pudding and white pudding.

Supermarket shelves have been cleared of Irish pork products while stockists in Britain, like retailer Waitrose, have also pulled them as officials advise consumers not to eat Irish or Northern Irish pork.Germany said it was taking all Irish pork products off the shelves as a precautionary measure, while contaminated Irish pork has been found in France and Belgium.Swedish authorities have also advised consumers to avoid products containing Irish pork until further notice.The European Commission announced it was closely monitoring the situation, saying experts from countries that may have received tainted pork shipments would meet Tuesday.Dioxins are toxic chemicals that can have serious health effects, including causing cancers, if there is long-term exposure to them at high levels.Food Safety Authority of Ireland deputy chief executive Alan Reilly said dioxin levels found in meat samples were between 80 and 200 times above the legal limit but stressed the risk to the public was very, very low.You would have to be eating products containing these chemicals for 40 years before you would show any signs of illness, he said.Padraig Walshe, president of the Irish Farmers' Association, said the recall was an absolute disaster in the run-up to Christmas, adding the contamination could cost Irish farmers hundreds of millions of euros.

It is going to be very difficult for the industry to get itself re-established and get customers to buy output again, Walshe told state broadcaster RTE. Catholic schools in Indonesia routinely accept non-Catholic students but exempt them from studying religion. After attending the Assisi Primary School, Obama was enrolled also as a Muslim, according to documents in the Besuki Primary School, a public school in Jakarta. Laotze blog, run by an American expatriate in Southeast Asia who visited the Besuki school, noted: All Indonesian students are required to study religion at school, and a young Barry Soetoro,being a Muslim, would have been required to study Islam daily in school. He would have been taught to read and write Arabic, to recite his prayers properly, to read and recite from the Quran and to study the laws of Islam.Indeed, in Obama's autobiography, Dreams From My Father, he acknowledged studying the Quran and describes the public school as a Muslim school.

In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell mother I made faces during Quranic studies,wrote Obama. The Indonesian media have been flooded with accounts of Obama's childhood Islamic studies, some describing him as a religious Muslim. Speaking to the country's Kaltim Post, Tine Hahiyary, who was principal of Obama's school while he was enrolled there, said she recalls he studied the Quran in Arabic. At that time, I was not Barry's teacher, but he is still in my memory claimed Tine, who is 80years old. The Kaltim Post said Obama's teacher, named Hendri, died. I remember that he studied mengaji (recitation of the Quran), Tine said, according to an English translation by Loatze. He has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ.But the campaign changed its tune when it issued a practicing Muslim clarification to the Los Angeles Times. An article in March by the Chicago Tribune apparently disputes Adi's statements to the L.A. paper. The Tribune caught up with Obama's declared childhood friend, who now describes himself as only knowing Obama for a few months in 1970 when his family moved to the neighborhood. Adi said he was unsure about his recollections of Obama.

But the Tribune found Obama did attend mosque.

Interviews with dozens of former classmates, teachers, neighbors and friends show that Obama was not a regular practicing Muslim when he was in Indonesia, states the Tribune article. It quotes Obama's former neighbors and third-grade teacher recalling how the young Obama occasionally followed his stepfather to the mosque for Friday prayers.Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum, notes the Tribune article cited by liberal blogs as refuting claims Obama is Muslim actually implies Obama was an irregularly practicing Muslim and twice confirms Obama attended mosque services. In a free-ranging interview with the New York Times, Obama described the Muslim call to prayer as one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.The Times' Nicholos Kristof wrote Obama recited, with a first-class [Arabic] accent, the opening lines of the Muslim call to prayer.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Militants torched 160 vehicles, including dozens of Humvees destined for U.S. and allied forces fighting in Afghanistan, in the boldest attack so far on the critical military supply line through Pakistan.The American military said Sunday's raid on two transport terminals near the beleaguered Pakistani city of Peshawar would have minimal impact on anti-Taliban operations set to expand with the arrival of thousands more troops next year.However, the attack feeds concern that insurgents are trying to choke the route through the famed Khyber Pass, which carries up to 70 percent of the supplies for Western forces in landlocked Afghanistan, and drive up the cost of the war.It also dents faith in Pakistani authorities already under pressure from India and the U.S. to act on suspicion that the deadly terror attacks in Mumbai were orchestrated by Islamic extremists based in Pakistan.The owner of one of the terminals hit Sunday denied government claims that security was boosted after an ambush last month in which bearded militants made off with a Humvee and later paraded it in triumph before journalists.We don't feel safe here at all, Kifayatullah Khan told The Associated Press. He predicted that most of his night watchmen would quit their jobs out of fear. Peshawar has seen a surge in violence in recent weeks, including the slaying of an American working on a U.S.-funded aid project. On Saturday, a car bomb detonated in a busy market area of the city, killing 29 people and injuring 100 more. Mehmood Shah, a former chief of security in Pakistan's tribal badlands now working as a consultant, said militants appeared to have moved into the Khyber region from both sides of the border in recent months to put pressure on the supply route. The terminals, like the route itself, could not be adequately protected by private security guards, he said.
