China aftershock destroys 71,000 homes; 6 killed By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer MAY 25,08

CHENGDU, China - A powerful aftershock destroyed tens of thousands of homes in central China on Sunday, killing six people and straining recovery efforts from the country's worst earthquake in three decades. More than 500 others were injured. Meanwhile, soldiers rushed with explosives to unblock a debris-clogged river threatening to flood homeless quake survivors. The fresh devastation came after a magnitude 6.0 aftershock — among the most powerful recorded since the initial May 12 quake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The China National Seismic Network said the aftershock was the strongest of dozens in the nearly two weeks after the disaster. The new tremor killed two people in Sichuan province and injured more than 480 others, 41 seriously, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The news agency said Monday that the aftershock also killed four people and injured 20 others seriously in neighboring Shaanxi province. Some 71,000 homes that had survived the original quake were leveled, and another 200,000 were in danger of collapse from the aftershock that caused office towers to sway in Beijing, 800 miles away.Xinhua did not give any details on whether the houses were occupied.

Before the aftershock, the Cabinet said the confirmed death toll from the disaster had risen to 62,664, with another 23,775 people missing. Premier Wen Jiabao has warned the number of dead could surpass 80,000.A mudslide caused by the aftershock blocked a road, but Xinhua said no serious landslides were reported.Previous landslides loosened by the quake jammed rivers across the disaster area, creating 35 new lakes that placed 700,000 survivors in jeopardy of floods, Vice Minister of Water Resources E Jingping told reporters in Beijing. The biggest concern was the new Tangjiashan lake in Beichuan county, where some 1,800 police and soldiers hiked with 22 pounds of explosives each to blast through debris, according to Xinhua. The news agency said the soldiers arrived at the lake early Monday and immediately began work to defuse the danger of a major flooding.Hazy weather prevented helicopter flights to the area, and forecasts for rain increased the risk that lakes could overflow.Rain will not only cause the amount of water going into the lakes to increase, but also influence their normal structure, so the situation is quite serious, said Vice Minister E. It is a daunting task because of the unpredictability of when the barrier lakes will burst.About 20,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster area due to the flood risk, and the total relocated could rise to 100,000, said Liu Ning, chief engineer at the Ministry of Water Resources. The ministry also said 69 dams in Sichuan were in danger of collapse from quake damage, but reservoirs have been drained to lessen the risk. Authorities have said the world's largest water project — the Three Gorges dam, located about 350 miles east of the epicenter — was not damaged.Elsewhere in the disaster zone, people ventured cautiously back to homes to retrieve belongings, but some decided the risk of entering damaged buildings was too great. In Hanwang, 58-year-old Zhang Heqing was carrying a handful of plastic bags and had planned to go into his apartment block, but the coal mine employee said he had second thoughts.

I just don't dare to go in, he said. I live on the fifth floor and the staircase is blocked and you can't even open the doors.Down the street, retiree Huang Huimei, 75, and her husband were busy stacking pots, pans, chairs and bed boards in a pile for movers to take to the provincial capital of Chengdu, where her son lives. Her building remained standing but had serious cracks and was not safe for habitation. She had spent most of the time since the quake caring for her 95-year-old mother. I don't know if we'll be back, she said as her husband handed her part of a cooking stove through the front window of their ground floor apartment. These apartments weren't that safe before the quake. My husband worked for the coal mine and it's supposed to rebuild the company apartments. But who knows when.More than 15 million homes were destroyed in the disaster, and the Chinese government has appealed for tents to help shelter survivors. Across town, about 10 families were living in makeshift shelters of picnic table umbrellas and nylon tarps draped over simple wood frames, pitched in a muddy lot that used to be a food market. Chickens pecked at watermelon rinds, while the survivors used plastic basins to wash and piles of scrap wood for cooking fires.

The local government officials have done a good job for themselves. They're living up there, said a camp resident who pointed to a neat row of tents up a hill. They didn't do such a good job here where the regular folks have to live, said the man, who would only give his surname, Wang. State television reported Sunday that a survivor trapped by the initial quake was rescued alive Friday, more than 11 days after the disaster. Xiao Zhihu, an 80-year-old bedridden man, was found in Mianzhu north of Chengdu, the report said. He survived because his wife was able to get food to him through the rubble of his collapsed house, but there were no further details given or a reason for the two-day delay in reporting the rescue. Meanwhile, one of two pandas missing since the quake from a major preserve for the endangered animals in Wolong, near the epicenter, was sighted Sunday, Xinhua said. The panda, named Xixi, disappeared before staff could reach it, but was believed safe, the report said. The search will continue Monday. The pandas' home at the world-famous Wolong reserve was badly damaged in the quake and five staff members were killed. Eight pandas from the reserve are spending the next six months at the Beijing Zoo on a special Olympics visit that was planned long before the quake. The animals were flown Saturday afternoon by special plane to Beijing from Chengdu. Associated Press writers William Foreman in Hanwang and Henry Sanderson in Beijing contributed to this report.

Torrential rain kills 10 in northwest Pakistan: police
Sun May 25, 6:49 AM

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) - At least 10 people including six young children from the same family were killed as torrential rain lashed Swat Valley in northwestern Pakistan, police said Sunday. The children, aged between eight and 12, died overnight when the roof of their mud house collapsed in Madyan town of the scenic valley, local police officer Jan Bahadur told AFP.He said rain which started late Saturday and continued into Sunday afternoon inundated several areas in the valley, the scene of a recent Islamist insurgency.Flash foods in Matta district killed two farm workers while two others were injured, Bahadur said, adding that a couple died when their car was swept away by rain water in Barikot area.

Swat Valley witnessed months of fighting between troops and rebels loyal to a cleric, Maulana Fazlullah, who was campaigning for the introduction of harsh Sharia law.Under a peace deal signed last week the government agreed to gradually pull out troops and introduce an Islamic justice system, while the rebels said they would halt attacks and surrender arms.

Official: Storm kills at least 1 in Minnesota By JOSHUA FREED, Associated Press Writer MAY 25,08

HUGO, Minn. - Severe thunderstorms packing large hail and possible tornadoes rumbled across the nation's midsection on Sunday, killing at least one person, injuring at least eight others and damaging dozens of homes. At least 20 people were unaccounted for after a swift storm blew through the St. Paul suburb of Hugo, damaging about four dozen homes, City Administrator Mike Ericson said. Many of them could be out of town for the holiday weekend, he said.A 2-year-old child was killed and the child's sibling was critically injured and taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Washington County Sheriff Bill Hutton said. The children's parents also were hospitalized with injuries sustained in the family home. It's horrible, Ericson said. The citizens are very shook and scared.

Residents reported a tornado touching down in the area, but that hadn't been confirmed by the National Weather Service.Emergency crews descended on the town to look for those who hadn't been accounted for and to assess the damage.About 300 or 400 homes were evacuated in the storm-damaged area because of concerns over hazards including downed power lines and leaky gas lines, Ericson said. The city set up a shelter at an elementary school for those displaced.Hugo Public Works Director Chris Petree said his family took shelter in the basement before the storm lifted his house off the ground and completely wiped out the second floor.I put my daughter down first, my wife on top of her and then I bear-hugged on top of them, Petree said.As he huddled in his basement against a foundation wall with his wife and 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Petree said they heard the thunderous sound of their house coming off the ground. All you hear is glass breaking and wood tearing and breaking in half, Petree said.In northeastern Iowa, at least six people were injured, one critically, when a possible tornado touched down Sunday near Parkersburg, authorities said.Jim Waterbury, a spokesman for Allen Hospital in Waterloo, said people came from nearby Grundy Center, Aplington and Eldora for treatment of mild to moderate injuries. It looks like most of them are fractures and broken collarbones, Waterbury said. One is in critical condition.

Officials opened Parkersburg's elementary school for evacuees.

A possible tornado also struck the nearby town of Dunkerton, with reports of structures damaged in both cities and in rural Black Hawk County.Power lines have also been knocked down in the area, leaving many residents without power.About 100 people have died in U.S. twisters so far this year, the worst toll in a decade, according to the weather service, and the danger has not passed yet. Tornado season typically peaks in the spring and early summer, then again in the late fall.

Authorities: Storm kills 7 in northeast Iowa MAY 25,08

PARKERSBURG, Iowa - A state official says a powerful storm that tore through a rural area of northeast Iowa has killed seven people and injured dozens more. The storm hit just after 5 p.m. Sunday and dealt heavy damage to the town of Parkersburg. The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado struck the town of about 1,000 residents.Iowa Homeland Security administrator Dave Miller says five of those killed were from Parkersburg and two were from nearby New Hartford. At least 50 injuries were reported.Miller says state officials are assessing damage and that more fatalities and injuries are possible.Parkersburg is 80 miles northeast of Des Moines.

Lebanese parliament elects army chief as president By SAM F. GHATTAS, Associated Press Writer Sun May 25, 6:44 PM ET

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Lebanon's parliament elected a new president Sunday, taking a step to stabilize the country after a long, violent political crisis and ushering in a shift in the balance of power in favor of Iranian-backed Hezbollah. The election of army chief Michel Suleiman brought palpable relief to ordinary Lebanese who feared in recent weeks that their country was in danger of another civil war.Celebratory gunfire reverberated across the capital Beirut as the election results were announced in the early evening. Glittering fireworks lit the night sky over downtown a couple hours later as cars formed motorcades and honked their horns.

He will be the savior. He is the hope for the future, Amer Eido, 29, said of Suleiman as he watched the fireworks. All the people are placing hopes on him and, God willing, he will bring prosperity. One motorcade was adorned with fluttering Qatari flags and pictures of the emir of Qatar, who brokered the deal last week that ended an 18-month political deadlock between the Hezbollah-led opposition and the Western-backed government. Red-and-white Lebanese flags and pictures of the new president were everywhere.I call on you all, people and politicians, for a new beginning, Suleiman said after he was sworn in. Let us be united. The people have given us their confidence to fulfill their aspirations, not to afflict them with our petty political disputes, he added.Political bickering prevented parliament from electing a president 19 times, leaving the country without a president since Emile Lahoud left office in November.Suleiman's election is the first tangible step in the deal to end the political crisis which erupted this month into the worst violence since Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war.The Arab-mediated deal reached in Doha, Qatar, was a major victory for Hezbollah and its allies, who got their long-standing demand for veto power over all government decisions. The Shiite militant group won that concession after it demonstrated its military power earlier this month. Gunmen overran large parts of Muslim west Beirut after the government tried to rein Hezbollah in.The show of force gave Hezbollah new political leverage and it is now reaping the spoils of clashes that left 67 dead. With the president's election, Prime Minister Fuad Saniora's Cabinet automatically dissolved, though Suleiman asked him to stay on as caretaker until a new prime minister and government is named. The outgoing government and the opposition have agreed to form a new unity government. The majority will choose the prime minister but will have to seek consensus with Hezbollah on key decisions and appointments.Hezbollah's ascendancy is a setback for the U.S., which had strongly backed the Lebanese government for three years and is concerned that Iran's influence is spreading in the Middle East. Nevertheless, the U.S. welcomed the developments in Lebanon and its diplomats and visiting Congressmen attended Suleiman's election.

I am hopeful that the Doha Agreement, which paved the way for this election, will usher in an era of political reconciliation to the benefit of all Lebanese, President Bush said in a statement.

Suleiman, who as president has limited influence over government policy, faces a difficult challenge in unifying the rival factions as the country's political leadership comes to grips with a more potent Hezbollah. He was a compromise candidate agreed by the government coalition and opposition and in his first speech as president, he offered words to comfort both sides. He praised Hezbollah's fight against Israel but also said there needs to be a dialogue over the future of its arsenal, a key majority demand. He called for a close relationship with neighboring Syria, a major state supporter of Hezbollah which dominated Lebanon for almost three decades. But he also backed the international tribunal to try the killers of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a position aligned with that of the majority, which accuses Syria of killing him. Syria has denied that, and the divisive issue sparked the political crisis 18 months when opposition ministers resigned. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon congratulated the Lebanese in a statement. The secretary-general hopes that today's historic event leads to the revitalization of all of Lebanon's constitutional institutions and a return to political dialogue within this framework, U.N. deputy spokeswoman Marie Okabe said. Beirut's once-vibrant downtown had become a virtual ghost town because of an opposition sit-in there over the past 17 months. But over the weekend, it was coming back to life as restaurants and shops reopened and streets filled once again with strolling pedestrians.

Politicians are speaking optimistically about foreign investment and foreign tourists returning and injecting a much-needed boost into the economy. Suleiman's election in itself is a solution to the Lebanese crisis, said Hassan Ayyoub, a 20-year-old university student. Heading with two friends to downtown Beirut late Sunday, he said he was confident the election will lure tourists and investors back to the country and consolidate security and stability. But Jihad Nasrallah, a 22-year-old university student, was among the few who think more trouble lies ahead. Suleiman's election gives the country a truce until next year's parliamentary elections after which the situation will blow up again, he predicted. In Suleiman's hometown of Aamchit on the Mediterranean coast in the Christian heartland north of Beirut, church bells tolled, several thousand broke out in cheers and danced in the main square as they watched the vote on a giant screen. Many waved Lebanese flags or those of Christian political parties in the fishing town. A group dressed in traditional baggy pants beat drums as others performed a sword folk dance. Huge pictures of the new president, who must be a Christian under Lebanon's traditional power-sharing formula, towered over the town's main square and banners praised him. He is a symbol of the unity of Lebanon because he led the army, said Najwa Bishara, a young woman who said came by bus to Aamchit with other youths from the north to celebrate.

Security officials said five people were wounded in and near Suleiman's hometown by stray bullets. In nearby regions, where Shiites are a minority, mosque minarets blared Quranic verses in a show of unity. The relief was also evident in parliament, where political rivals smiled and shook hands, sitting together in the chamber to vote for the first time in 1 1/2 years. Foreign ministers of regional rivals Saudi Arabia, which backs the outgoing government, and opposition supporters Iran and Syria attended, as did the emir of Qatar.

Palestinian officials: Israel offers new West Bank proposal By MARK LAVIE, Associated Press Writer Sun May 25, 5:58 PM ET

JERUSALEM - Israel has offered to give up more of the West Bank than it had in a previous proposal but still not enough to meet Palestinian demands, Palestinian officials close to peace talks said Sunday. Also Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was quoted as telling backers that the negotiations have achieved no progress since they were restarted last November with a pledge to President Bush to try for a full peace treaty by the end of the year. The Palestinian officials said Israel presented its new proposed West Bank map three days earlier in a negotiating session. The proposal would leave about 8.5 percent of the territory in Israeli hands. The last map Israel offered had 12 percent of the West Bank remaining in Israel.Israel wants to keep its main settlement blocs on the West Bank, offering land inside Israel to Palestinians in exchange. The land would be between Hebron in the southern West Bank and Gaza — at least part of a route through Israel to link the two territories. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the negotiations are being conducted behind closed doors, said Palestinians were ready to trade only 1.8 percent of the West Bank for Israeli land.

Israeli officials refused to comment.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said that progress has been made in several areas, but he refused to give details out of concern for harming the negotiations. The differences in evaluations have a wide range of possible explanations.Abbas needs to show quick, concrete results from the talks to persuade his skeptical people that the negotiations are worthwhile. But he said that while the talks drag on, Israel continues construction in its West Bank settlements and maintains its network of security roadblocks and checkpoints that have choked off economic and social life there. On the Israeli side, Olmert needs success to shore up his sagging domestic popularity, stung by his inconclusive war in Lebanon in 2006 and harmed further by a string of corruption cases. He was interrogated in the latest one on Friday.Olmert insists that at least a declaration of principles is attainable by the target date.

One of the Palestinian officials said the 8.5 percent figure of West Bank land Israel would retain with its new map does not include east Jerusalem, where Israel has built a string of Jewish neighborhoods it intends to keep. Israel wants to put off dealing with Jerusalem, possibly the touchiest issue on the table, until the end of the process. Israel's previous proposal to keep 12 percent did not include east Jerusalem either.Israel annexed east Jerusalem after the 1967 Mideast War, a move not recognized by the international community. East Jerusalem is home to key sites holy to Islam, Judaism and Christianity. All but about 80,000 of the 270,000 Jewish settlers live in the blocs Israel wants to annex as part of a peace treaty. After the traumatic removal of just 8,500 Jewish settlers from Gaza during Israel's 2005 withdrawal, a bitter saga that is still reverberating through Israeli society, Israel wants to take down as few settlements as possible.Palestinians, on the other hand, consider all the settlements illegal and want them removed, claiming all of the West Bank according to the 1949 cease-fire line that held until Israel captured the territory in the 1967 Mideast war.Previous peace talks broke down in 2000 with Israel offering about 91 percent of the West Bank, all of Gaza and a link between the two, a formula backed by then-U.S. President Bill Clinton. Issues including Jerusalem and Palestinian refugees were not resolved. Within months, bloody violence erupted between Israelis and Palestinians, halting peace talks until last November.

Abbas indicated skepticism about the prospects of the renewed talks.

Nothing has been achieved in the negotiations with Israel yet, Abbas told a meeting of the Fatah Revolutionary Council, according to a report Sunday in the Fatah-associated al-Ayyam daily and confirmed by meeting participants. Domestic issues in both Israel and the U.S. are diverting attention from peacemaking, Abbas told Fatah leaders. I fear the (corruption) probe against Olmert and the American preoccupation with the (presidential) elections will negatively affect the negotiations, Abbas said, according to a member of the council, Salah Taameri. Associated Press writer Karin Laub contributed to this report from Ramallah, West Bank.

7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

Medvedev says Russia-China force to be reckoned with MAY 24,08

BEIJING (AFP) — Russia's new President Dmitry Medvedev, winding up his first foreign trip, said Saturday the world could not ignore the joint voice of his country and China, and rejected criticism of the alliance.Medvedev said it was symbolic that he picked China as his first destination outside the former Soviet Union. The two countries have been increasingly assertive as their economies grow on the back of rising exports.Russian-Chinese cooperation has today emerged as a key factor in international security, without which it is impossible for the international community to take major decisions, Medvedev said at Peking University.Maybe not everybody likes the strategic cooperation between our two countries, but we understand that this cooperation is in the interest of our people and we will boost it whether or not it pleases some people, he said, without naming critics.A day earlier, Medvedev and Chinese President Hu Jintao in a joint statement denounced US plans to build a global missile defence shield.Russia has been outraged by US plans to build the shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, former Soviet bloc countries in Eastern Europe. Russia and China have also been uneasy about US-Japanese cooperation on a missile shield.

But Medvedev has stayed away from openly assailing the West in the style of his mentor and predecessor Vladimir Putin, who remains highly influential in the prime minister's post.China and Russia are veto-wielding permanent members of the UN Security Council, where they have coordinated positions on controversial issues such as Kosovan independence, which they both oppose, as well as the Iranian nuclear issue. The two have also established the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation with four Central Asian nations in a set-up similar to the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), which has been expanding into Eastern Europe. Our activity is not directed against any other country but serves to maintain an international balance, Medvedev said of cooperation with China.

Unlike most Western nations, Russia has not voiced concerns about China's human rights record or its clampdown on protests that broke out in Tibet in March against Chinese rule.Medvedev told the Chinese students that he was looking forward to the Beijing Olympics, whose worldwide torch relay was marred by protests over Tibet.I am convinced that the organisation of the Olympic Games will be at a high level, he said. When I watch the Olympic Games, of course I will support Russian athletes but also the Chinese athletes and I hope that together we will win all of the medals. But analysts note that a spate of disputes still mar ties between Russia and China, which had armed conflicts in the Soviet era.

Negotiations have been bogged down on plans for a Russian oil pipeline to supply China's rapidly growing economy. They are also competing for Central Asia's oil and gas, which was exclusively Moscow's preserve in Soviet times.Hu accepted Medvedev's invitation to visit Russia next year, Chinese state media reported.

Iran hails strategic Syria ties: IRNA Sun May 25, 10:50 AM ET

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's defense minister hailed his country's strategic ties with Syria on Sunday, just days after Israel called on Damascus to distance itself from Tehran, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported. Israel and Syria on Wednesday announced they had begun an open dialogue with the aim of a comprehensive peace, the first confirmation of negotiations between the long-time enemies in eight years. But Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on Thursday said Syria needed to distance itself completely from problematic ties with Iran. Syria, she said, must also stop supporting terror -- Hezbollah, Hamas, groups backed by Iran.

In Tehran on Sunday, Iranian Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar described Syria as a strategic ally before talks with his Syrian counterpart Hassan Turkmani, IRNA said.Iran-Syria ties are strategic ties founded on the national interests of the two countries and the world of Islam, he said.Turkmani said, according to IRNA: The robust Iran-Syria ties neutralize and weaken threats against the line of resistance.Iranian state television later said in a scrolling headline that Turkmani rejects any precondition in talks with Israel.Syria has demanded the return of the Golan Heights, a plateau overlooking Damascus on one side and the Sea of Galilee on the other, since the Jewish state captured it in the 1967Middle East war.The United States, in its initial public reaction Israeli-Syrian contacts, said it did not object to talks but repeated its criticism of Syria's support for terrorism.

Many analysts say U.S. hostility to Damascus, and to its Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah allies, makes a Syrian-Israel deal unlikely before President George W. Bush leaves office in January. The United States accuses Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons. The Islamic Republic denies the charge and says its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity so that it can export more of its oil and gas.(Reporting by Hashem Kalantari; Writing by Fredrik Dahl; Editing by Jon Boyle)

NASA spacecraft successfully lands on Mars By ALICIA CHANG, AP Science Writer MAY 25,08

PASADENA, Calif. - A NASA spacecraft plunged into the atmosphere of Mars and successfully landed in the Red Planet's northern polar region on Sunday, where it will begin 90 days of digging in the permafrost to look for evidence of the building blocks of life. Less than two hours later, the Phoenix Mars Lander beamed back four dozen black-and-white images including one of its foot sitting on Martian soil amid tiny rocks. Others included the horizon of the arctic plain and ground with polygon patterns similar to what can be found in Earth's permafrost regions.Absolutely beautiful, said Dan McCleese, a chief scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It looks like a good place to start digging.Cheers swept through mission control when the touchdown signal from the Phoenix Mars Lander was detected after a nailbiting descent. Engineers and scientists hugged and high-fived one another. In my dreams it couldn't have gone as perfectly as it went, project manager Barry Goldstein said. It went right down the middle.

The initial pictures were primarily to give engineers information on the condition of the lander including its power supply and the health of its science instruments. An image showed the lander unfurled its solar panels as planned after the dust settled.Initial results show Phoenix landed almost level, tilted at a quarter of a degree. The hardest part is over. There's still a lot of drama left, said Goldstein, who kept up a JPL tradition by passing out bowls of lucky peanuts during the landing.Phoenix plunged into the Martian atmosphere at more than 12,000 mph after a 10-month, 422 million-mile voyage through space. The lander kept in contact with Earth through the orbiting Mars Odyssey during the entire seven minutes of terror. It performed a choreographed dance that included unfurling its parachute, shedding its heat shield and backshell, and firing thrusters to slow to a 5 mph touchdown. The radio signal confirming the landing came at 4:53 p.m. PDT.Touchdown detected!! We're on the surface of Mars and there is celebration in Mission Control!! JPL engineer Brent Shockley blogged from inside mission control. It's the first successful soft landing on Mars since the twin Viking landers touched down in 1976. NASA's twin rovers, which successfully landed on Mars four years ago, used a combination of parachutes and cushioned air bags to bounce to the surface.Mission chief scientist Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson, had two words to describe the landing: Picture perfect.Phoenix's landing is a relief for NASA since Mars has a reputation of swallowing spacecraft. More than half of all nations' attempts to land on Mars have failed.

Phoenix's target landing site was 30-mile-wide shallow valley in the high northern latitudes similar in location to Earth's Greenland or northern Alaska. The site was chosen because images from space spied evidence of a reservoir of frozen water close to the surface.Like a tourist in a foreign country, the lander initially will take in the sights during its first week on the Red Planet. It will talk with ground controllers through two Mars orbiters, which will relay data and images.Phoenix is equipped with an 8-foot-long arm capable of digging trenches in the soil to get to ice that is believed to be buried inches to a foot deep. Then it will analyze the dirt and ice samples for traces of organic compounds, the chemical building blocks of life. The lander also will study whether the ice ever melted at some point in Mars' history when the planet had a warmer environment than the current harsh, cold one it currently has. Scientists do not expect to find water in its liquid form at the Phoenix landing site because it's too frigid. But they say that if raw ingredients of life exist anywhere on the planet, they likely would be preserved in the ice.

Phoenix, however, cannot detect signs of alien life that may exist now or once existed. The only other time NASA searched for chemical signs of life was during the Viking missions. Neither lander found conclusive evidence of life. Phoenix avoided the doom of its sister spacecraft, the Mars Polar Lander, which in 1999 crashed into the south pole after prematurely cutting off its engines. The Polar Lander loss, along with the earlier loss of an orbiter the same year, forced NASA to overhaul its Mars exploration program.

Phoenix, named after the mythical bird that is reborn from its ashes, inherited hardware from a lander mission that was scrapped after the back-to-back Mars losses, and carries similar instruments that flew on Polar Lander. Built by Lockheed Martin Corp., Phoenix is the first mission from NASA's Scout program, a lower-cost complement to the space agency's pricier Mars missions. It cost $420 million to develop and launch Phoenix compared to the $820 million originally invested in the twin rovers. The rovers have dazzled scientists with their Energizer Bunny-like ability to keep going and their geologic findings that ancient Mars once had water that flowed at or near the surface. Mission managers do not expect Phoenix to be as hardy as the rovers since winter will set in later this year at the landing site with fewer hours of sunlight available each day to power the lander's solar panels. S. America unites to create regional EU version

BRASILIA, May 23: A new South American union was born on Friday as leaders of the region’s 12 nations set out to create a continental parliament. Some see the new organisation, Unasur, as a regional version of the European Union. Summit host Brazil wants it to help coordinate defence affairs across South America and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez calls it a counterweight to the United States. The number one enemy of the union of the south is the empire of the United States, Mr Chavez said after arriving in Brazil’s capital. It’s very elementary: divide and conquer. The socialist crusader said the US was trying to generate wars in South America and tries to halt advances in the this project.Brazil’s president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva invited other Latin American and Caribbean nations to join the venture. Unasur is … open to all the region, he said.

But South American leaders still found their own reasons for division.Unasur’s first secretary-general, Rodrigo Borja, resigned on Thursday, before the organisation was formally born. He complained that some leaders had baulked at his vision of putting other regional trade blocs, including Mercosur and the Andean Community, under Unasur’s authority. The union’s inaugural meeting was moved from Colombia after that nation raided a guerrilla camp in Ecuador, sparking a crisis in regional relations. The organisation was first proposed at a 2004 summit in Peru. —AP

Barroso welcomes Germany's ratification of Lisbon Treaty
11:14, May 24, 2008

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Friday welcomed Germany's ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. The Bundasrat, the upper house of parliament, approved the treaty on Friday, completing the ratification process after the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, did so on April 24. The Treaty of Lisbon would not have been possible without the commitment and leadership provided by Chancellor (Angela) Merkel and the German (EU) Presidency, said Barroso. The Treaty of Lisbon has now been approved by more than half the member states and I hope this will be followed as quickly as possible in the remaining member states, he said. The Lisbon Treaty, signed by European Union (EU) heads of state and government in December, will make EU's much needed institutional reforms possible. The entry into force of the treaty requires the ratification of all 27 member states of the EU.Source: Xinhua

Arab FMs meet on Mediterranean union proposal
www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-24 17:45:19

CAIRO, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Some ten Arab foreign ministers began their meeting here on Saturday to coordinate stances on a Union for the Mediterranean initiative proposed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the state Egyptian MENA news agency reported. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit is leading the Egyptian team to the meeting, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki was quoted as saying. Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, foreign ministers and senior officials from Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania,Jordan, the Palestinian territories, Syria and Lebanon attended the meeting, the spokesman said. The Arab stance on the Mediterranean union will be considered by the European side as France will host a summit on July 13 for launching the initiative.

Last month, European Union (EU) leaders agreed to a limited form of union involving a regular summit between EU and Mediterranean leaders with a joint presidency and a small secretariat. On Tuesday, the European Commission adopted proposals for enhancing relations with its Mediterranean partners through the new union with the Mediterranean region. Sarkozy put forward the idea of setting up such a union last May and the principle was approved by the EU's spring summit in March. The proposals are to be presented at the inaugural summit of the new union on July 13.Editor: Lu Hui

The prestigious economic forum is comprised of senior economic leaders. Zeev Klein 25 May 08 15:11

The G-30 is meeting in Jerusalem today for a series of discussions on global economic conditions, including the weakening dollar and re-emergence of inflation. The meetings are behind closed doors, the G-30 policy since it was founded in 1978. Few outside members of G-30 are invited to its sessions, and they are invited as observers only, without the right to speak. A number Bank of Israel executives and former deputy governor Prof. Zvi Eckstein, as well as Ministry of Finance director general Yarom Ariav will attend the Jerusalem meeting in this capacity. Former Bank of Israel governor Jacob Frenkel is the G-30 chairman, and current governor, Fischer, is a member. Other current members include Prof. Paul Krugman of Princeton University, Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet, former US Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers, former Federal Reserve Board Chairman Paul Volcker, Governor of the People's Bank of China Zhou Xiaochuan, and Governor of the Banco D'Italia Mario Draghi.

CARTERS JUST A JOKE ANYWAY.

Carter blasts EU over Palestine
May 25 2008 by Ben Glaze

FORMER US president Jimmy Carter today claimed Europe should be embarrassed by the way it had allowed Israel to treat Palestine.Mr Carter used a visit to Wales to spell out how he thinks Britain can help bring peace to the Middle East. The 83-year-old Nobel Peace prize winner said the UK should copy his efforts to create stability in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Speaking on a visit to the Hay Festival, the Democrat, who led Americans from 1977 to 1981, said: They should be encouraging the formation of a unity government that includes (Palestinian political parties) Hamas and Fatah. They should be encouraging Hamas to have a ceasefire in Gaza alone as a first step, with Israel as it has announced in the past it wanted to.He added: It's a horrible punishment of them and to see Europe go along with this, I think is embarrassing. It shoul;d be embarrassing. There's no reason to treat people this way.Mr Carter, the 39th US President, said the European Union, Britain and France, had integral roles to play in stopping fighting between the Israelis and Palestinians. They should be encouraging Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement on prisoner exchange and as a second step Israel should agree to a ceasefire tin the West Bank, which is Palestine – it’s Palestinian territory –and I think the EU should encourage the compliance that Israel should withdraw from the occupied territories, which they have committed to do in the past, said Mr Carter.I think Europeans should work towards those goals. The former President said the situation was not hopeless but admitted he had struggled to reach agreement negotiating with the various parties.

The diplomat, wearing a dark grey suit, striped grey shirt and dark red tie, braved heavy rain to speak at a hall in the grounds of Gwernyfed High School, whose motto is Persevere. His 100-strong audience included National Assembly presiding officer Dafydd Elis Thomas, culture minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas and sustainability minister Jane Davidson. He began his conversation by joking: I hope it’s raining like this on my farm at home.Mr Carter is tonight due to speak to 1,300 people – each paying £50 – at the Barclays Wealth Pavilion on the soggy festival site. His address will be on the theme of conflict resolution and human rights. He will be following in the footsteps of former US President Bill Clinton who memorably dubbed the Hay Festival the Woodstock of the mind.

Abu Dhabi: King Juan Carlos of Spain opened the Emarati-Spanish Business Forum at the Emirate Palace Hotel on Sunday. The opening ceremony was graced by Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spanish Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Miguel Sebastian, UAE Minister of Economy Sultan Al Mansouri, Chairman of UAE Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Salah Al Shamsi, and top economic officials from the UAE and Spain. During the two-day forum, business delegates will have the opportunity to know the economic and business reality of Spain and UAE, as well as to test existing business and investment opportunities. Spain is keen to have a higher economic profile in the region and UAE. The commercial relations between both countries have been growing steadily in the last years, with total figures that stand at $1.13 billion in 2006, and $1.32 billion in 2007.

EU Looks East as Foreign Policy Council Convenes MAY 25,08

Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: The European Union is expected to agree on a Russia policy deal at the meeting
The EU will look to the east Monday, May 26, when ministers will discuss a strategic deal with Russia, their countries' role in the western Balkans and closer ties with Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. At the so-called Jumbo Council in Brussels, the foreign ministers will be flanked by their colleagues from the defense and development ministries. While plans for an EU common defence policy are still at the embryonic stage, the bloc has already deployed peacekeepers to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Chad and is training policemen in Afghanistan and the Western Balkans. Georgia on Friday joined the list of countries seeking help from Brussels in training its security forces.Much of the discussions, however, are likely to focus on the EU-Lex law mission in Kosovo, which was originally meant to take over the administration of the newly-independent country from the United Nations on June 15.EU officials now concede that legal and logistical difficulties mean that deadline is unrealistic.

While the mission's overall goal has not changed, ministers are unlikely to commit themselves to a new date, sources from the Slovenian presidency of the EU said.Tuesday's discussions will turn to development and aid issues amid calls from the European Commission for governments to commit more funds and demands for help from China and Myanmar.Ministers are likely to reaffirm their serious concern about the violence and irregularities that have marred elections in Zimbabwe, where a run-off vote for the presidency is due to take place on June 27, nearly three months after the first round of voting took place. The meeting's overall objective is to prepare the groundwork for the regular summer gathering of EU heads of government and state, due to take place June 19-20.

Poland calls for an eastern alliance

Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Poland wants an eastern version of Sarkozy's Club Med.At their last summit, EU leaders backed French calls to revamp their relations with their southern neighbors through the creation of a union for the Mediterranean. But Poland insisted at the time that the EU should also forge closer ties to the east. Those Polish calls have now developed into a proposed Eastern Partnership. Backed by Sweden and blessed by heavyweights France and Germany, the Eastern Partnership would seek to negotiate visa-free travel and create free-trade zones with Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.Poland and Sweden argue that their initiative will help steer Ukraine away from Moscow and closer to the West. Since it will not cost more money and will not create more bureaucracy, they are optimistic that it can enjoy the backing of other member states.

The European Commission has not been consulted and says it is eager to hear from Warsaw and Stockholm. At the same time, officials in Brussels note that just as with French President Nicolas Sarkozy's plan for a Mediterranean Union, the Eastern Partnership would only be given serious consideration if it can provide added value and avoid duplication in its structures.

Russia deal likely to be formally agreed upon

Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Russia and the EU have been facing off of late.During their meeting, the EU's foreign ministers are expected to give their formal backing to the launch of long-awaited talks on a strategic deal with Russia.A breakthrough on the issue was obtained by EU ambassadors on Wednesday, after Lithuania agreed to withdraw its veto in protest at Russia's closure of the main oil pipeline into Lithuania, its treatment of Georgia and its refusal to hand over men suspected of committing atrocities in Lithuania in 1991.While the launch of talks is due to be agreed by ministers without discussion, EU diplomats warn that that deal is not yet in the bag.

We've seen a lot of surprises on this issue during the last years, one official said.Relations between the EU and Russia on issues ranging from energy to education are currently governed by a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA), agreed in 1997 and intended to run for 10 years.DW staff / DPA (nda)

REVELATION 20:11-15
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

JUDE 12-16
12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.(JESUS)
16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.

I BELIEVE THE BLACK HOLES ARE THE LAKE OF FIRE THAT SINNERS GET THROWN IN AFTER THEY STAND IN FRONT OF JESUS IN JUDGEMENT.

WorldNetDaily Will black holes swallow Earth? Doomsday fears ignited by big-bang machine May 23, 2008 11:40 pm Eastern
2008 WorldNetDaily

The Large Hadron Collider
Could the upcoming launch of the world's biggest atomic particle smasher – nicknamed the Big Bang Machine – touch off a cataclysmic event that dooms our planet? That's the fear of some critics of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, which is built to slam protons together at an unprecedented peak energy of 14 trillion electron volts – nearing levels scientists believe were reached in the first microseconds after the big bang. The critics have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government and the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, known as CERN, as scientists prepare to bring the collider online in July.Co-plaintiffs Walter Wagner and Luis Sancho fear that when the collider reaches full power, it could create black holes or strangelets that would grow and eventually consume the Earth.A black hole is a region of space so dense that light cannot escape its gravitational pull. Scientists have not proved the existence of strangelets, a hypothetical cosmological object containing an exotic form of matter.

Physicists at CERN and similar research facilities dismiss the doomsday claim as nonsense. But Wagner, a former nuclear safety officer who says he's studied physics for more than 30 years, wants the project shelved for four months to allow time for further safety reviews.Fermilab in Illinois, which has the lead U.S. role in the Large Hadron Collider, also is a defendant in the suit, along with the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, according to MSNBC.The Justice Department says it will not comment on the case before it files a response next month.

Federal attorneys are not expected to focus on the black hole question. They have successfully handled previous lawsuits by Wagner by narrowing their defense to issues such as claims the government and government-funded scientists have complied with environmental guidelines.Scientists at CERN hope to see the first low-power proton collisions later this summer or in the fall. The collider will not reach full power – the big bang energies – until next year. By that time the Justice Department hopes the legal issues will be resolved.

Instant car melter

Fermilab currently has the world's largest collider, with a circumference of about four miles. But the new particle accelerator, buried an average of 100 meters below the border between France and Switzerland, is 17 miles around and will have seven times the energy of Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator. The particle smashers, used to study the nuclei of atoms, take two beams of protons and smash them together after reaching extremely high energies. Scientists hope, in the process, to discover new types of smaller particles, known as quarks. The beam of energy produced by the Swiss collider will be powerful enough to melt a small car almost instantly.Wagner insisted safety reports he has seen so far do not rule out his black-hole scenario. For all I know, they will come up with some other novel argument that proves this can't happen, he said, according to MSNBC. We want to see an argument that absolutely proves it ... because otherwise it ends up being [a statement that] we have no way of calculating. And that, to me, is a scary proposition. But theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, author of Physics of the Impossible, said in a February MSNBC interview he isn't worried.I'm going to sleep well when that machine is turned on, because I know that cosmic rays have more energy than the Large Hadron Collider, and you don't see black holes from outer space, he said. These are microscopic in size, and they don't last long.Wagner further explained his concerns to Vancouver, B.C.'s Straight.com.A micro black hole would simply bounce around, hitting other atoms and absorbing them into itself, he said, then, over a period of months or years the reaction would eventually grow to swallow the Earth.

Wagner said a strangelet is potentially more stable than existing matter. Therefore, he said, if one were created inside the collider, it would convert any matter it touched into a part of itself. The larger atom would eventually convert all of the Earth into a large strange atom, Wagner told Straight.com.Wagner's complaint for a temporary restraining order to halt the project reads in part:There is no question that should defendants inadvertently create a dangerous form of matter … or otherwise create unsafe conditions of physics, then the environmental impact would be both local and national in scope, and quite deadly to everyone.Canadian scientist who works on the project, Dugan O'Neil of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, admitted to Straight.com that it's impossible to completely rule out some very strange things resulting from the new mega-collider. He, nevertheless, is not too concerned. It would be fascinating if those theories were right, O'Neil, said, somewhat in jest. But the probability that they're right is exceedingly small.O'Neil argued there's no evidence that microscopic black holes exist; there's no evidence that strangelets exist.

Missing the creator for the particles?

John Conway, a University of California at Davis professor of physics and collaborator on the project, calls the collider the greatest engineering feat of all mankind. It took the combined resources of nearly all of the countries in the world and thousand and thousands of scientists, he told the California Aggie, his school's newspaper. People started designing this in the early 1990s and only now is it reaching completion.A Straight.com reader, however, conveyed a different perspective on the project in a letter to the editor.Michael Hey said it's reassuring to know there's only a small chance the collider will suck the Earth into a minature black hole, but there is a more realistic peril.Consider the possibility that this research represents an intellectual dead end, he said. Unfortunately, since so much money has been invested into a particular way of thinking about the world, it has become next to impossible for leading physicists to remain truly open-minded about what the universe is really telling us.Hey reasoned that instead of expending more and more energy to divide space, wouldn't it make more sense to abandon the search for a fundamental particle in favor of a fundamental pattern of creation? The Large Hadron Collider represents a monumental technological achievement, he allowed. Unfortunately, this leaves ordinary people mystified and confused, stuck with the pervasive (and, to my mind, mistaken) impression that physics can only be understood by physicists.

NUCLEAR WEAPONS WILL BE USED.

EZEKIEL 20:47

ZEPHANIAH 1:18

MALACHI 4:1

HALF OF EARTHS POPULATION DIE DURING THE 7 YR TRIBULATION.(THESE VERSES ARE JUDGEMENT SCRIPTURES NOT RAPTURE SCRIPTURES)

LUKE 17:34-37
34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.(Christians have new bodies, this is the people against Jerusalem during the 7 yr treaty)(Christians bodies are not being eaten by the birds).

MATTHEW 24:37-51
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Attack on Iran scenario Saturday , 24 May 2008
By Abdulhamid Bilici (TZ)

It seems Turkey is missing the chance to observe critical developments amid debates over controversial statements issued by the Supreme Court of Appeals and the Council of State in which they took sides in the closure case brought against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). Perhaps the most ominous development of this week was a news story that ran in The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday. US President George W. Bush may attack Iran before his tenure ends, the story, based on reports by Israeli Army Radio, said. According to a statement a top-level source in Jerusalem made to Army Radio, a high-ranking official who accompanied Bush on his visit to Israel had said that the military operation option was discussed behind closed doors. The same official further added that the military operation option had not been implemented because of drawbacks expressed by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. It was further noted that the military operation possibility grows stronger as Hezbullah gains de facto control of Lebanon.

The Tehran administration saw the increased visits by Bush, Cheney and Rice to the region from this perspective. Indeed, Cheney visited the region once, President Bush twice and Rice 15 times during the last six months. While speaking at the Israeli Knesset during his second visit to the region in the last four months, Bush said, The president of Iran dreams of returning the Middle East to the Middle East. … America stands with you in firmly opposing Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions. … For the sake of peace, the world must not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. In his address to the World Economic Forum meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, Bush called on Middle Eastern countries to isolate Iran and Syria. He also said, Permitting the world's leading sponsor of terror [Iran] to possess the world's deadliest weapons would be an unforgivable betrayal for future generations. The White House quickly refuted the Army Radio news story. Spokesman Dana Perino described The Jerusalem Post's news story as rumor unworthy of publication. However, these words do not imply that the idea of attacking Iran has been abandoned by Washington. As a matter of fact, in his essay published in yesterday's issue of Gulf News, Patrick Seale, a journalist and Middle East affairs expert, wrote that Bush might have decided to attack Iran during the last six months of his term. Noting that the circles that paved the way for the Iraq war have for some time been urging Bush to attack Iran, Seale pointed out that the US is trying to mobilize the Gulf countries against Iran instead of trying to defuse the tension between them.Days before The Jerusalem Post's news story was published, I met some officials in Washington who shared my doubts. I was quite bothered by the publication of this piece of news. An important official in Washington said the possibility of an attack on Iran is higher than one year ago. While noting that there remain many uncertainties, this source in Washington indicated that a US attack on Iran may be justified not by Iran's nuclear efforts, but its support of armed groups in Iraq. According to this plan, efforts of the Tehran administration that risk the lives of US soldiers in Iraq would give the US the right to conduct hot pursuit and public opinion could be persuaded.

Despite this plan, voiced by this important source, I thought that it would be irrational for Bush to launch such an attack while the end of his term draws near. In particular, this was what was advocated by US Vice President Dick Cheney and his supporters from the start. But the US Department of State, the Pentagon and even intelligence units were cold to such an endeavor. But, I talked to another official, who confirmed the same plan and my doubts doubled. Moreover, this official further based his statements on a source from Bush's Republican Party. This rumor confirmed the Israeli newspaper's claim. It was rumored that Bush said to the Republican senator who accompanied him on his trip, Even if it is my last day in the White House, I will order an attack on Iran.

Returning from Washington, I watched Robert Redford's film Lions for Lambs on the plane, which further confirmed this nightmarish scenario as this film evidenced that Hollywood has already given a start to the public opinion manipulation campaign for an attack on Iran. The film discussed Bush's Middle East adventure from the perspective of a senator, a journalist, an academic and several university students, presenting Iran as the source of all evil. Iran not only supported the resistance in Iraq but also helped Sunni militants going to Afghanistan. During the briefing, the Republican senator said that contrary to what is believed, the Sunni and Shiite groups were cooperating against the US.What's more, when I learned that Michael Rubin, who is close to Cheney, was invited to the War Academy to give a speech, I said to myself that this was the last piece in the puzzle. We should not forget that external developments have considerable effects on internal affairs. Who knows, there may be a correlation between the weak reactions voiced by Washington against the closure trial against the AK Party and Cheney's Iran plans and Rubin's talk. By Abdulhamid Bilici.

Shalom Stan, WATCH VIDEO on the Persecution of Jewish Believers in Israel.

Please forward this email onto your friends.

It has been a very busy week in Israel, and there has been a lot of talk amongst the Messianic Jewish community of 8000-10,000 Israeli Jewish Believers regarding the burning of New Testaments. One of the Messianic organizations we are associated with in Israel is the Bible Society in Israel, which prints New Testaments in Hebrew and supplied the New Testaments which were collected and burned. The Headlines in Maariv, Israel’s largest Hebrew daily newspaper exclaimed:

Burning the New Testament

Or Yehuda 2008: The Deputy Mayor fights the missionaries and sets on fire, hundreds of New Testaments.

The headline from the Associated Press read:

Orthodox Jewish youths burn New Testaments in Or Yehuda

The AP article went on to describe how young orthodox Jewish Yeshiva students set fire to hundreds of New Testaments in the latest act of violence against the Believers in Israel since Ami Ortiz was seriously wounded after a bomb which was disguised as a Purim gift basket blew up as he opened it. It is believed that it was delivered to his home by Religious Jewish extremists. Local Orthodox Jews in his town of Ariel have visited him in the hospital disowning the Jewish extremists and even the local anti-missionaries have publically denounced the bombing. We must remember that these are religious Jewish extremists and they do not represent the feelings of the majority of the Orthodox Jewish community, which condemns such extreme physical violence. It was also not too long that religious Jewish extremists also set ablaze a building used by a Hebrew speaking Messianic congregation in Jerusalem.

I’m not so sure that I would consider burning the New Testaments an act of violence, as we understand that Religious Jews – and even secular Jews are offended by the New Testament as it is viewed by them as a religious book that represents Christianity. And to the Jewish people Christianity represents the horrific memories of millions of Jews that were murdered through the Spanish Inquisitions, and the Pogroms (perpetrated by the Catholic Church which represented Christianity), and the Holocaust perpetrated by the Nazis who murdered 6 millions Jewish people while attending Christian church services at their Lutheran churches each Sunday.

We must understand that the Jewish people need to find Yeshua (Jesus) in their own Jewish Scriptures, the Hebrew Masoretic text. (known to Christians as the Hebrew Old Testament). Bibles for Israel will be pushing the Jewish Scriptures which are read daily by Orthodox Jews. Back to the recent event of the New Testaments – Book burning… According to the AP article, Uzi Aharon, Or Yehuda’s Deputy Mayor stated that hundreds of New Testaments were distributed in the predominantly religious town of 34,000 Israelis. The Deputy Mayor said that after he received complaints, he got into a car with a loudspeaker and drove through the neighborhood where the New Testaments were distributed advising the citizens of Or Yehuda over the loudspeaker, that Jewish Yeshiva students would be going door to door to collect the New Testaments and Messianic materials. He told the people to turn the New Testaments over to them. Apparently the New Testaments and materials that were collected were dumped into a pile and set ablaze near a synagogue.

Although the Maariv newspaper reported that hundreds of yeshiva students took part in the book-burning Uzi Aharon told The AP that only a few students were involved. He went on to say that not all of the New Testaments were collected, however they recouped hundreds of the New Testaments which the students burned. Aharon said that according to Judaism, it is a commandment to burn books that speak of Yeshua (Jesus). Stan, the difference between the New Testament Bibles that were distributed by these Believers and printed in conjunction with the Bible Society in Israel, and our Bible - the Messianic Prophecy Bible that will be printed by Bibles For Israel is that our Bible will be the Hebrew Tanakh Jewish Scriptures (Old Testament/First Testament) in the Masoretic text. (We will also have a version with the New Testament, and we will give it to those who ask for it).

Bibles for Israel/The Messianic Prophecy Bible is using the same Masoretic version of the Bible that is read by Orthodox Jews and therefore they will not be able to burn our Messianic Prophecy Bibles as they are using the same Holy Scriptures that Orthodox Jews read every day. Although our Bible will explain the Messianic Prophecies, these explanations are in the Jewish Scriptures, Hebrew Masoretic text version and therefore the rabbis in Israel will forbid any Jew to burn or destroy our Bibles. We must remember that when the Apostles shared the Gospel in the first century, they only preached from the Jewish Scriptures (the Old Testament) – there was no New Testament at that time. Please keep Israel in your prayers. Most people in Israel are open to hearing about Yeshua!

Thirty percent of the population is religious while the other 70% are secular Israelis who have various beliefs about God and are very open to discussing the Messiahship of Yeshua. Our Bible will reach both Secular and Orthodox Jews. Stan, Please support Bibles For Israel, so that we can get our Messianic Prophecy Jewish Scriptures into the hands of Jewish people in Israel, and around the world. – click to support now. Sing with joy for Israel; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, O LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel.(Jeremiah 31:6-7)

The CARMEL ALERT May 23rd 2008 A compilation of news reports from the past week for the information of those committed to praying for Israel and the salvation of the Jewish people.

David's Comment: This Land is Your Land - This Land is My Land ......This land belongs to you and me !
So go the lyrics of a popular song of the 1960's by the New Christie Minstrels. They were of course singing about their homeland - the USA. If you have been in one of my meetings recently, you may well have heard me quote the words of the song, but with a different nation in mind - Israel.Josie and I made Aliyah to Israel from the nation of our birth, New Zealand, 16 years ago. We now see Israel as our homeland and we treasure the privilege of being able to dwell in the land of the Bible, the apple of God's eye. However, according to the writings of the Apostle, anyone from any nation who is born again into the New Covenant, has been grafted into the olive tree which refers to the nation of Israel, Romans 11:17, and is now a fellow citizen Eph 2:11. This is not the fanciful idea of David Silver - it is the Word of God.

When you were born again, you did what Ruth did - You made Naomi's God your God. If you worship and server the God of the Bible, He describes Himself as the God of Israel, then you are no longer just the nationality of the country where you were born or live - You have been born-again as an Israelite. Some would say a spiritual Israelite , but I say its more than that. Jewish people are 100% Israelites by natural birth into one of the 12 tribes, but you are also 100% an Israelite by spiritual rebirth. You are destined to live forever in the Kingdom of God, and the Kingdom of God is centred in the physical nation of Israel. To be more precise in the city of the King - Jerusalem. Our future as Jews and grated in fellow citizens is eternally entwined. Israel's future and destiny is your future and destiny. Can you say as Ruth said I have made your people my people and your God my God; where go I will go and where you die, bury me also ? The reason why I focus on this so strongly in my meetings and in this article is because Israel is in serious, serioous trouble right now. We have the most inept, corrupt leader since the days of the kings. 80% of the Jewish people don't want to know or obey the God who loves them so much and has so much in store for them. Our Muslim neighbors want to destroy us and much of the world is in league with them. Even Israel's best friend the USA is intent on tearing OUR country apart. The only people who can help is the praying born again Church. But 80% plus of the Church simply doesn't care or is serving Satan's purposes by favoring the so called Palestinians right to the land of Israel over the rightful inhabitants, the Jewish people and our fellow citizens - that's YOU !

Every blessing and promise given to Abraham and his physical descendants is now yours too, every inheritance is ours together, ( Gal 3:29 ) but we have to stand and fight to receive it. We need to Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem ( Psalm 122 ) that means to pray for Israel's full restoration. We need to give the Lord no rest when it comes to the protection of Jerusalem ( Isaiah 62:6 & 7 )

If you have been silent until now, or not vocal enough, now is definately the time to change that. Be bold and be strong - stand up for Israel before God and before men. Realise your personal interest in Israel's protection - its your inheritance ........ and its your Messiah & King who will not return until all the prophecies are fulfilled ....Sing with me now ...... This land is your land, this land is my land, from the hills of Lebanon, to the Nile River, from the Mediterranean Sea to the great River Euphrates, this land was given to you and me .......... SO LETS PRAY FOR IT and STAND WITH ITS PEOPLE LIKE NEVER BEFORE !!! Please copy this comment and give it to your pastor and the people in your church or home group - post it on the noticeboard .......

The Lord bless you as you bless Israel by standing in defense of her right to exist on the land given to the Jewish people by the God of Israel . Lets pray that Israel will turn back to their God. Do not be silent, but share this with your fellow Christians, share it with your pastors, and with anyone you have a chance to speak to. Lets also pray for that breakthrough to the Muslims, and please remember to pray for our son Jordan, and all of his fellow soldiers in the IDF.

Shabbat Shalom ... David & Josie
