Strong quake felt in Chilean capital, Santiago Sun Apr 22, 7:20 AM ET

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A 5.3 magnitude quake was felt in the Chilean capital, Santiago, on Sunday but there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake followed a strong temblor in the country's south on Saturday that caused power cuts, landslides and large waves off the nation's Pacific coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 6:22 a.m. local time (10:22 GMT), with its epicenter 54 miles (86 kilometers) north northeast of Chile's port city of Valparaiso, and 83 miles from Santiago.The length of Chile is prone to earthquakes.

OMAHA, Neb. - A tornado ripped up farmsteads in western Nebraska and injured several people as thunderstorms rippled across the Plains. The twister that struck late Friday spread debris along a path that was up to a half-mile wide in places, the Frontier County sheriff's office said Saturday.In neighboring Dawson County, it followed a course about 18 miles long and came within a mile of Gothenburg, a city of about 4,000, said weather service meteorologist Scott Bryant in Hastings.

The twister was 3/4 of a mile to a mile in width, said weather service meteorologist Corey King.The violent weather destroyed a farm house about 20 miles east of Wellfleet, and damaged others in Frontier County and east of Moorefield, authorities said.At the farmstead I'm sitting at right now the roof of the newly constructed building is gone, Dawson County emergency management director Brian Woldt said Saturday. I have power lines scattered and power poles snapped in some areas.

Several vehicles were blown off Interstate 80 just west of Gothenburg, likely by straight-line wind, said Bryant.John Johnson, chief executive officer at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital, said nine people injured in collisions or when their vehicles were blown over were brought to his emergency room. One was taken to a trauma center in Kearney and the others were treated and released.

are launching a program to stop people from leaving religious offerings at the summit of Mount Kilauea ncluding food they say attracts rats and cockroaches. Visitors leave 45 pounds of offerings from Halemaumau Crater each week, including flowers, bottles, money, incense, candles and crystals, park rangers say.But food offerings are the most problematic, they say.The accumulation of rotting food and foliage attracts rats, flies, ants and cockroaches, a park statement said.One ranger recently found a whole, cooked piglet replete with a papaya, orange and apple in a cardboard box, the park service said.The rotting offerings pose a hazard to the endangered nene goose, the state bird endemic to the islands, the park service said.

Meteor Shower Peaks Before Dawn Sunday Joe Rao

The sky will be dark and moonless for at least three hours before the first light of dawn on Sunday morning, April 22, when the annual Lyrid meteor shower is due to reach its peak. The shower remains above one-half of its peak strength for about a day or two, centered on the shower's maximum.

The meteors are called Lyrids because their paths, if extended backward, appear to diverge from a spot in the sky not too far to the southwest of the brilliant bluish-white star Vega, in the constellation of Lyra the Lyre. Within a day on either side of the maximum, about 5 to 10 Lyrids can usually be seen each hour by a single observer under good skies. At the peak, the Lyrid rate is roughly 10 to 20 per hour.

Vega appears to rise from the northeast around 9 p.m. local daylight time, but by 4 a.m. it has climbed to a point in the sky nearly overhead. You might want to lie down on a long lounge chair where you can get a good view of the sky.

Bundle up too, for while it won't be a cold as on a winter's night, nights in April can still be quite chilly. Otherwise, meteor watching is a pretty simple endeavor, requiring no special equipment. While hardly a rich display, like the famous August Perseids or December Geminids, the April Lyrids are brilliant and appear to move fairly fast, appearing to streak through our atmosphere at 30 miles (48 km) per second. About 20 to 25 percent leave persistent trains. Their orbit strongly resembles that of Comet Thatcher, which appeared in 1861 and has an orbital period of about 400-years. Thus, the Lyrids are this comet's legacy: They represent the tiny bits and pieces shed by this comet on previous visits to the Sun. The Earth's orbit nearly coincides with Comet Thatcher around April 22nd each year. When we pass that part of our orbit, we ram through the dusty debris left behind by the comet.

There are a number of historic records of meteor displays believed to be Lyrids, most notably in 687 B.C. and 15 B.C. in China and A.D. 1136 in Korea when many stars flew from the northeast. On April 20, 1803, many townspeople in Richmond, Virginia, were roused from their beds by a fire alarm and were able to observe a very rich display between 1 and 3 a.m. The meteors seemed to fall from every point in the heavens, in such numbers as to resemble a shower of skyrockets.In 1922, an unexpected Lyrid rate of 96 was recorded, and in 1982 rates unexpectedly reached 80 per hour, so although usually a weak display, the Lyrids have had a history to surprise observers so it's always one to watch.

Iran making nuclear fuel, says IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Iran has begun making nuclear fuel in its underground uranium-enrichment plant.A newly disclosed letter from an official at the UN's nuclear watchdog says Iran has assembled some 1,300 centrifuges the machines that spin uranium gas into enriched material and eight cascades of the centrifuges are now operating at the facility at Natanz.

The letter was written to Iran by the IAEA's deputy director-general and head of the Department of Safeguards, Olli Heinonen.The Iranian ambassador to the IAEA in Vienna, Ali Ashgar Soltanieh, told Reuters news agency that Iran was carrying out enrichment under safeguards implemented in Iran by the IAEA. He said Iran was awaiting the next official report on its activities from IAEA Director-General Muhammad el-Baradei.

Our enrichment is continuing under the safeguards of the IAEA, the inspectors and cameras are controlling all activities, and the report of how many centrifuge machines and the latest status of the activities in Natanz will be reported by the director-general, Soltanieh said.Iran's action to produce nuclear fuel is taking place despite UN Security Council sanctions imposed on Iran over its refusal to
halt enrichment work.Responding to the new disclosure, U.S. White House National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Iranian leaders are continuing to defy the international community and are continuing to lead the Iranian people down a path of isolation.

Olmert: Iran can be stopped peacefully Sun Apr 22, 4:03 AM ET

JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday that there was still time for international diplomatic efforts to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions, without the need for military action.

I believe the international efforts will achieve the goals, Olmert said. There is no need to get caught up in any apocalyptic prophecies that have no basis in reality.He warned against panic over Iran's nuclear program, telling Israel Radio that, Iran is far from crossing the nuclear threshold ... Unfortunately, it is not as far as I would like it to be but it is also not as close as it proclaims to be.Israeli concerns have been heightened by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's repeated calls for Israel's destruction.

Olmert has never ruled out taking military action, but he has repeatedly said he would prefer a diplomatic solution.The U.N. Security Council imposed limited sanctions in December and strengthened them slightly last month because of Iran's refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, which can produce fissile material for a weapon or fuel for civilian energy. The council has set a new, late May deadline.The security council has passed two resolutions, which impose unprecedented sanctions, Olmert said. I think there is a possibility, even without a military operation, to stop Iran from going nuclear.

Olmert also said that last summer's war against Hezbollah guerrillas in south Lebanon was painful but succeeded in changing the rules of the game in the region.The threat is not as it has been for many many years. At this moment the northern border is totally quiet, he said. The main goal we wanted to achieve, changing the equation, I think it was achieved but at a very heavy price.He said the time would not be ripe for peace negotiations with Syria until Syrian President Bashar Assad stopped supporting Palestinian militants.We want to have peace with every Arab state, including Syria, he said.

But ... it is not enough to say publicly I want peace, you have to act on this.The prime minister traditionally grants Israeli media outlets two sweeping interviews a year, one in the fall, ahead of the Jewish New Year, and another prior to Independence Day, which begins Monday evening.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - The Islamic militant group Hamas on Sunday called for new attacks on Israel after eight Palestinians were killed in a surge of fighting over the weekend. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum urged Palestinians to be prepared for a new round of confrontation.The blood of our people is not cheap, he said in a statement faxed to The Associated Press. Therefore we are calling on ... (Hamas' armed wing) and the Palestinian resistance groups to be united in the trench of
resistance and to use all possible means of resistance and to respond to the massacres.Eight Palestinians were killed during a 24-hour surge in violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including two militants killed early Sunday during an arrest raid in the West Bank city of Nablus. The violence has threatened a cease-fire declared last November between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza. GUATEMALA CITY - An American religious leader who calls himself the Antichrist canceled a visit to Guatemala after the Central American country barred him as a security risk, saying he provokes conflict with Roman Catholics and evangelicals. Puerto-Rican born Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda wears the number 666 tattooed on his arm and claims a following of 2 million people, most in Miami, where he lives, and Colombia.

His Growing in Grace church holds a congress every year in different locations in the Americas.Guatemala's Congress had labeled De Jesus Miranda a terrorist and immigration officials were instructed to refuse him entry to the country, where thousands of his followers from around the world had gathered.

He had vowed to defy the ban but canceled Saturday and will instead address the gathering in a video teleconference, said the sect's head pastor in Guatemala, Jorge Batres.We're a church respectful of the law and we will have to wait until the judge gives us an injunction, Batres said.

Batres said De Jesus Miranda's Guatemalan followers will firmly fight within the law so that he can come and let the world know that Jesus the Man is in Guatemala.De Jesus Miranda founded the Growing in Grace church in 1986.
