Moderate quake hits Indonesia's Sumatra Wed Jan 3, 9:05 AM ET

JAKARTA (AFP) - A moderate 5.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The earthquake hit Wednesday at 7:47pm (1247 GMT). It was centred 105 kilometres (65 miles) west of Banda Aceh, about 50km under the seabed, the US Geological Survey reported. The Indonesian archipelago sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami in December 2004, which killed some 168,000 people in Aceh province.

Perfect storm brews over Australia's west Wed Jan 3, 2:24 AM ET

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Tropical Cyclone Isobel crossed the northwest Australian coast on Wednesday, causing little damage, but weather forecasters warned it may now link up with a deep depression inland to create a destructive perfect storm.

It's one of the few occasions as a forecaster that you really do hope your forecast is wrong, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Grant Elliott told local radio. But unfortunately indications are that it's going to be a very significant, perhaps a once-in-a-generation, storm for this time of year, said Elliott.Cyclone Isobel, Australia's first tropical cyclone of the season, was rated category one, the lowest in a five-point scale, with winds of up to 100 km per hour (62 miles per hour) near its center.Isobel caused little damage in sparsely populated Western Australia state but temporarily disrupted offshore oil production by Woodside Petroleum Ltd. and Santos Ltd.

It is expected to weaken below cyclone strength within a few hours as it moves south. But the bureau said remnants of the cyclone will join an inland storm, creating a new destructive storm late on Wednesday or Thursday over Australia's major goldfields in the south of Western Australia. We're expecting some quite exceptional winds on Thursday, perhaps reaching 100 to 120 km per hour, so there'll be localized damaging winds and the risk of quite significant livestock losses with the combination of rain and wind producing hypothermia, said the bureau's Elliott.

Malaysian flood toll rises as fresh downpours predicted Wed Jan 3, 5:25 AM ET

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysian authorities battling floods that have killed 16 people have said they were braced for further disaster with heavy rains forecast for the weekend. The latest victims were two Nepalese workers whose bodies were discovered on Tuesday, said Che Moin Umar, the chief of the crisis and disaster management directorate. The pair had been standing in a river taking photographs of the devastation in southern Johor state -- the worst-hit region -- when they were swept away on Sunday, he said Wednesday. We have advised the public not to play in the water. It is very dangerous. Even our rescue boats with 30 horsepower engines find it very difficult to manoeuvre in this situation, so hard would it be for people, he told AFP.Che Moin said the situation in Johor was improving, and that the number of evacuees had fallen to 26,400. The number of people sheltering in relief centres nationwide peaked at 90,000 last week. But he said that forecasters had warned of heavy downpours starting from Friday in the northeastern states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang that from Saturday were tipped to sweep across the country's entire north. We are preparing for the worst situation actually. Our meteorological department is very sure we are going to have heavy downpours at the weekend, he said.So we hope the situation in the south can return to normal, so we can concentrate on the northern and eastern states.Victims have blamed the flash floods, the worst in decades, on environmental degradation and poor development planning.

Christian broadcaster predicts terrorist attack By Andy Sullivan
Wed Jan 3, 10:59 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson says God told him a terrorist attack will result in mass killing in the United States in the second half of 2007. I'm not saying necessarily nuclear, the Lord didn't say nuclear, Robertson said on Tuesday on his television show The 700 Club. It'll be mass killing, possibly millions of people, major cities. The evil people will come after this country and there's a possibility, not a possibility, a definite certainty, that chaos is going to rule,he added.

Robertson told viewers they should not be afraid because if you get blown up or something, you go to heaven, that's the worst thing that will happen to you.Robertson said God conveyed this message to him during an annual prayer retreat. He said he has received other spiritual messages during past retreats. The broadcaster's 2006 forecast of heavy storm damage in coastal areas was followed by the second-lightest hurricane season since 1995. He said his prediction was borne out by storms in New England, Denver, the Pacific Northwest and the Philippines.God did not warn him of any natural disasters this year, he said.

Robertson, 76, reaches about 1 million U.S. viewers daily on the Christian Broadcasting Network, which he founded. He is credited for helping shape political views of evangelical Christians, a vibrant force in the Republican Party, and campaigned for the presidency as a Republican in 1988.Robertson has not shied away from controversial statements in the past.

In January 2006, he suggested that former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke because God was punishing him for dividing Israel. He also called for the assassination of leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a vocal critic of President George W. Bush.He also claims on his Web site (http://www.cbn.com/communitypublic/shake.aspx) that he can leg-press 2,000 pounds (907 kg), well above the world record, thanks to an energy shake he promotes.

Dozens of Jews Pray at Joseph´s Tomb
By Hillel Fendel (INN) JAN 03,07

The IDF fought on two fronts last night: Escorting Jews to pray at the holy site of Joseph's Tomb in Shechem, and clashing with and arresting terrorists. As occasionally occurs, the army gave permission Tuesday night to a large group of Jewish worshipers to pray at the destroyed holy burial site of the Biblical figure Joseph the Righteous. Though the Oslo Accords stipulate freedom of worship at such sites, the yeshiva Od Yosef Chai that was built there around 1980 has been banished, and Jews are rarely permitted to visit.

Arabs vandalized and burnt the site during the early stages of the Oslo War in late 2000.Late last night, however, accompanied by IDF soldiers, Jews were permitted to pray there.

At the same time, other IDF forces were involved in another aspect of the war, discovering two huge bombs meant to be detonated against Israeli targets. One of them was particularly huge - a 60-kilogram affair discovered this morning west of Jenin. Last night, another bomb placed near an IDF position was discovered, possibly as large as 15 kilograms. Border Guard forces were called to the sites and safely detonated both in controlled explosions. Palestinian terrorists also threw a home-made grenade at an IDF force operating in Shechem; no one was hurt. Israeli soldiers arrested a wanted Fatah terrorist west of Ramallah, while an undercover force apprehended another heavily wanted Al Aksa Brigades (Fatah) terrorist and his brother. The arrest of the former was considered a major breakthrough, as he had been involved of late in preparing suicide attacks. In Sderot and Ashkelon, tense quiet reigns, after two Kassam rockets fired from Gaza last night missed their targets. One was fired towards Ashkelon, but landed in Palestinian Authority-controlled Gaza, and another one landed in an open area near Kibbutz Nir-Am.

Ancient latrine fuels debate at Qumran
Updated Wed. Jan. 3 2007 8:30 AM ET - Associated Press

QUMRAN, West Bank Researchers say their discovery of a 2,000-year-old toilet at one of the world's most important archeological sites sheds new light on whether the ancient Essene community was home to the authors of many of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

In a new study, three researchers say they have discovered the outdoor latrine used by the ancient residents of Qumran, on the barren banks of the Dead Sea.

They say the find proves the people living here two millennia ago were Essenes, an ascetic Jewish sect that left Jerusalem to seek proximity to God in thedesert.Qumran and its environs have already yielded many treasures: the remains of a settlement with an aqueduct and ritual baths, ancient sandals and pottery, and the Dead Sea Scrolls -- perhaps the greatest archeological find of the 20th century. The scrolls, which include fragments of the books of the Old Testament and treatises on communal living and apocalyptic war, have shed important light on Judaism and the origins of Christianity. Thanks to an Israeli anthropologist, an American textual scholar and a French paleo-parasitologist, researchers can now add another find: human excrement. The discovery is more significant than it may seem. The nature of the settlement at Qumran is the subject of a lively academic debate.

The traditional view, supported by a majority of scholars since the site was first excavated in the 1950s, is that the settlement was inhabited by Essene monks who observed strict rules of ritual purity and celibacy and who wrote many of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The second school says the people living at Qumran were farmers, potters or soldiers, and had nothing to do with the Essenes. The scrolls, according to this view, were written in Jerusalem and stashed in caves at Qumran by Jewish refugees fleeing the Roman conquest of the city in the first century. The researchers behind the latrine finding, which is being published in the scholarly journal Revue de Qumran, say it supports the traditional view linking the residents of Qumran with the Essenes.A description of Essene practice by the Jewish historian Josephus Flavius in the first century notes that Essene rules required them to distance themselves from inhabited areas to defecate and dig a trench a foot deep which was to then be covered with soil.Joe Zias, a Jerusalem-based anthropologist, and James Tabor, a Dead Sea Scrolls expert from the University of North Carolina, decided to look for the Qumran latrine. If it was far from the settlement ruins and if the excrement was buried, it would offer evidence the people living at the site were Essenes.

Zias and Tabor identified an area behind a rock outcropping, took soil samples and sent them to Stephanie Harter-Lailheugue, a French scientist specializing in ancient parasites. The samples tested positive for pinworms and two other intestinal parasites found only in human feces. Samples from locations nearer the settlement tested negative. The excrement traces were found underground -- meaning the feces had been buried, as required by Essene law -- a nine-minute walk uphill from the settlement.A lot of people were concerned with what went into the body, but the Essenes were perhaps the only group in antiquity concerned with what came out, Zias said. No one else would have gone to the trouble of walking this far.Still, there is no way to date the fecal parasites, which could have been left by Bedouin who are known to have inhabited the area. To counter this, the paper quotes a Bedouin scholar as saying the nomadic tribespeople do not bury their feces.

Another problem is that archeologists have already identified a toilet at Qumran -- inside the settlement.

But Zias believes it was for emergencies: In some cases, divine commandments notwithstanding, nine minutes outside the camp was too far to go.Norman Golb, a history professor at the University of Chicago and a critic of the link between Qumran and the Essenes, called the new paper an outrageous claim. There's no plausible connection between what they found and the conclusion that the Essenes lived at Qumran, Golb said. Anyone living at the site would have done the same. Golb maintains that Qumran's residents had nothing to do with the Essenes or the Dead Sea Scrolls. Those who claim a connection do so because they're committed in their writings to it, Golb said. Dead Sea Scrolls scholar Stephen Pfann, of the University of the Holy Land in Jerusalem, said questions about the parasites' age have to be cleared up, but the find is potentially significant. Qumran, he says, could have been inhabited at different times by different groups: first by Jews of the Hasmonean dynasty in the second century, then by a monastic group of Essenes who left after an earthquake and were replaced by a lay group of Essene date farmers, then again by Essene ascetics, before being finally taken over by Jewish rebels fighting the Roman legions and abandoned when Judea fell. Qumran isn't one thing, it's many things, Pfann said. This makes it more exciting, but also more complicated to understand.

Minister calls on Israel to join Nato
By Tim Butcher in Jerusalem - 03/01/2007

An Israeli cabinet minister yesterday called for the Jewish State to turn its back on the Middle East region and work towards joining Nato and the European Union.Avigdor Lieberman, a right-wing politician who serves as minister for strategic threats, claimed violence by Palestinian militants was no different from terrorist acts by jihadists against members of Nato and EU.Israel's diplomatic and security goal... must be clear: joining Nato and entering the European Union, he said. The war we are waging in the Middle East is not a war of the state of Israel alone, it is a war of the entire free world, and we are situated on the front lines.Today, Palestinian terrorism is part of the worldwide jihad.Palestinian terrorism is fuelled by al-Qa'eda, the Iranians and Hizbollah. He rejected suggestions that membership of a group such as Nato would clip the wings of the notoriously free-thinking and often ruthless Israeli Defence Force. There is no doubt that membership in Nato would still afford us 100 percent freedom in military activity.

Israel has long argued its conflict with Palestinian militants is part of the wider global clash with militant jihadism.Critics dismiss this argument saying the Palestinian question is a straightforward land dispute and they accuse Israel of dishonestly using jihadism to justify its continued illegal occupation of Palestinian land. While Nato is not offering Israel full membership in the near future, links between it and the Jewish State have been strengthening in recent years, especially in the area of intelligence about militant Islam.

Three months ago Israel became the first non-European nation chosen by Nato to work within its Individual Cooperation Programme. The programme specifies 27 areas of cooperation including response to terrorism, intelligence sharing, political dialogue, and a host of military and civilian issues including search and rescue operations.

Full membership would afford Israel the same guarantee of mutual defence offered to all members.Historically, this meant that if one member of the alliance was attacked, the full might of Nato would come to its defence.Israeli membership of Nato would mean America would be obliged to protect the Jewish State were it attacked by Iran, whose leadership repeatedly calls for Israel to be wiped off the map.Any such guarantee through Nato, however, would simply duplicate the existing bilateral defence pact between Israel and America which provides the same threat of protection byAmerica.

As a Middle East nation, Israel has ambitions nevertheless of being seen as a European country. Its national soccer team plays in the European zone for World Cup qualification and Israel has long been a member of the European broadcasting union that earns it a place in the annual Eurovision Song Contest.

Merkel seeks closer US-EU economic co-operation Wed Jan 3, 9:23 AM ET

LONDON (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she wanted to see ever-closer economic co-operation between the European Union and the United States in a Financial Times interview. Merkel singled out financial market regulations and
intellectual property law as two fields which she wanted to review, saying that there were clear advantages for both sides in coming together. She will visit Washington on January 4 for talks with US President George W. Bush that are expected to touch upon the Middle East, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Kosovo. The relationship between Germany and the United States hit a low when Merkel's predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder, opposed the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

We want to talk about ever-closer economic co-operation. Our economic systems are based on the same values, Merkel told the FT.We should be looking for ways to keep developing these together at a transatlantic level. We must watch out that we do not drift apart but instead come closer together, where there are clear advantages for both sides. She insisted that countries such as China and Japan should not see the partnership as hostile, adding: Building bulkheads against Asia would be quite senseless and certainly not in our interest.Germany's six-month presidency of the European Union began earlier this week and Merkel is also chair of the G8 for 2007.Questioned about Europe's reliance on Russian energy imports, Merkel warned that relations between the two must be based on reciprocity. If obstacles are being erected to protect Russian companies from European investors, nobody should resent it if the Europeans take reciprocal action, she told the FT.

On Russian human rights, she said she had repeatedly told President Vladimir Putin that contrary opinions are a normal part of society, adding that Russia's tough attitude towards non-governmental organisations gives ground for concern.Merkel also seemed to baulk at the suggestion by French interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy, an all-but-certain presidential candidate, that the troubled European constitution could be revived as a mini-constitution.Taking a more optimistic view, she said there was an entirely new sentiment about the raison d'etre of the EU and said Germany would not approach the issue from a minimalist position
