Flood clean up continues and questions remain about who will pay for it

The B.C. government is offering compensation to flood victims in Chilliwack, the rest of the Fraser Valley, and other areas with damaged property after the record rainfall. They can apply for funding assistance if losses are not insurable. Safety Minister John Les is also rebuffing claims by the NDP that the government hasn't spent enough on flood prevention, pointing out the $10 million spent in recent years. But the minister admits more money is needed for dykes and levee improvements and that means lobbying the federal government for more cash. © Information Source: News1130

Huge power outages due to snow storm in Northern BC

An early season snow storm has knocked out power to nearly 10,000 people in Northern BC. Over 30 centimetres of snow has been reported in some areas. The outage is affecting all 3,700 customers in Burns Lake, and has spread all the way to Houston. BC Hydro says the power should be restored around 6pm tonight. © Information Source: News1130

Storm Watching

In the winter, nature unleashes its frenzied temper in fierce storms that batter the shoreline. Winds gust with a deafening roar as the roiling gray waters of the Pacific gather into monstrous walls of water that crash into the shoreline in an explosion of salty spray.

Beaches, swept smooth and clean from repeated thrashings, are deserted and the coastal forests loom like dark shadows in the misty sky.Torrential rains, gale-force winds, and tremendous waves. This is Mother Nature at her theatrical best and it is absolutely awe-inspiring!

Huge waves, explosions of foaming white spray, thundering surf, thrashing rain driven by winds that gust up to 100 knots...An exhilarating way to blast away the winter blues, storm watching in the Pacific Rim region has become very popular as a spectator sport. You can view these raging storms through the windows of a fireplace-warmed inn, or you can don rain gear and feel the power of the wind and water from a designated-safe, outdoor viewing area. No matter how you choose to watch the storms, it is a mesmerizing experience you’ll never forget.Storm watching season starts in late October and lasts until early spring. Many of the accommodation properties in the Pacific Rim region offer storm watching packages and are happy to lend rain gear if you choose to venture outdoors during the storm.

You can turn your winter storm watching vacation into a luxurious retreat by booking into a resort spa. Or, you can incorporate a soothing massage or hydrotherapy treatment into your holiday no matter where you choose to tuck in for the night.Exceptional dining is another specialty in the Pacific Rim region, no matter what the weather is doing. From breakfasts of fresh baked breads and gourmet coffee to dinners of sumptuous seafood and culinary masterpieces created by world-renowned chefs, dining in the Pacific Rim region is always a vacation highlight. Art galleries, gift shops, and a variety of year-round attractions and activities provide pleasant diversions between storms.

Typhoon Muifa creating battering waves Tim Ballisty, Meteorologist, The Weather Channel Sat Nov 11, 12:36 AM ET

What started Tuesday innocently enough as a moderate tropical storm has become a small, but potent, typhoon east of the Philippines. Typhoon Muifa (Moy-fa) became worthy of its prefix today when winds were estimated at near 105 mph. Muifa is at best meandering to the north while churning in the Philippine Sea just east of Manila. In fact, for all intents and purposes, the typhoon has stalled. Though forecast to move west over the islands, forward progression will be slow. Bad news for the island chain as flooding and mudslides will result from the copious amounts of rain expected to fall over the next 48 hours. There is no doubt that the large and powerful waves have been battering the eastern coast of the northern Philippines. The system is forecasted to weaken gradually over the next 5 days as it heads towards southern Vietnam. The Atlantic and eastern Pacific Basins remain quiet.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) ,Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Canadians honour war dead
Last Updated: Saturday, November 11, 2006 9:22 AM ET ,CBC News

People across Canada paused for a moment of silence on Saturday to mark Remembrance Day and honour the more than 100,000 Canadians killed in war and peacekeeping missions during the past century.Prime Minister Stephen Harper, his wife and their two children attended the main ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa under rainy skies. Gov. Gen. Michaƫlle Jean was also among the dignitaries.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper greets Cyprus peacekeeping veteran Gen. Clayton Beattie during Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa on Saturday. (Tom Hanson/Canadian Press) The Canadian Forces chaplain-general led prayers as guns boomed and warplanes roared overhead.Brig.-Gen. Stanley Johnston told the service that Canadians are still ready to protect liberty and peace.

The prime minister was asked for his comments after the ceremonies and praised the three remaining Canadian veterans of the First World War.I said earlier this week we think particularly about the people who are serving in Afghanistan now. But there's been a lot talk this year about the fact there are still three World War One veterans living, and I think we should cherish every moment they're still with us.Veterans Percy Wilson and Lloyd Clemett, both 105, live in Toronto, while John Babcock, 106, lives in Spokane, Wash.

Silver cross mother Alice Murphy of Conception Harbour, N.L., laid a wreath in Ottawa on behalf of mothers who have lost a child in the military or merchant navy. Murphy's son, Cpl. Jamie Murphy, was killed in a suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan.Later, the Governor General walked into the crowd to shake hands with veterans and their families.

In Kandahar, Afghanistan, about 500 Canadian soldiers marked Remembrance Day with a poignant ceremony.

They gathered on the parade square at National Command Headquarters in front of a grey stone cenotaph bearing the names and photographs of Canadians who have been killed in Afghanistan.A lone bugle played the Last Post before those in attendance observed two minutes of silence.A smaller ceremony was held in the Panjwaii area of southern Afghanistan. About 100 Canadian soldiers laid a wreath at a wooden cross to honour 42 colleagues who have died in the wartorn country since 2002. Some soldiers wept as they knelt before the cross. At Bagram air base north of the Afghan capital Kabul, American forces held a Veterans Day ceremony to remember their war dead. Our veterans' time was historic and we honour them, said U.S. Maj.-Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley. Our time, your time, will be just as historic and the nation honours you.During a visit to Toronto on Friday, Gen. Rick Hillier, Canada's chief of defence staff, said the day has sadly become more relevant because of the deaths of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.Hillier said he's used to Remembrance Day sending a chill down his spine. But this week, the chill down my spine and the emotion that I and all of us feel across this country is greater than it has ever been, he said during Ontario's first Tribute to the Fallen.

Bush: Terror Fight Unchanged by Election Results
By Scott Stearns ,White House,11 November 2006,VOA NEWS

U.S. President George Bush says America's fight against terrorism will not be affected by this past week's election in which his political party's lost control of Congress. Opposition Democrats vow to continue that fight, but with some changes.President Bush speaks at the Veterans Days ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery On the day Americans set aside to honor their military veterans, President Bush thanked those men and women in uniform for defending freedoms that include the right to choose their leaders at the ballot box, even in a time of war. After his Republican Party lost control of Congress in Tuesday's vote, Mr. Bush met with leaders of the opposition Democratic Party and vowed to work together.

The elections will bring changes to Washington. But one thing has not changed: America faces brutal enemies who have attacked us before and want to attack us again, said Mr. Bush. I have a message for these enemies: Do not confuse the workings of American democracy with a lack of American will. Our nation is committed to bringing you to justice, and we will prevail. In his weekly radio address, the president said he looks forward to hearing from new congressional leaders about their ideas for supporting U.S. troops in the fight against terrorism. He also reflected on the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld who many Democrats and some Republicans blame for what has gone wrong in Iraq.Mr. Bush wants former CIA Director Robert Gates to replace Rumsfeld at the Pentagon.

As secretary of defense, he will provide a fresh outlook on our strategy in Iraq, and what we need to do to prevail, he added. In the Democratic radio address, national party chairman Howard Dean said the election results show that voters want changes in America's approach to Iraq and the broader war on terror. Our agenda includes a new direction in defending America at home and around the world, said Dean.

We will listen to the military and take their advice and ensure that our troops and our agencies have the tools and equipment they need to defend our freedom.Democrats want Iraqi leaders to take more responsibility for their own security so U.S. troop levels there can be reduced. President Bush says any timeline for a withdrawal of American forces would embolden insurgents. Both the president and Democratic leaders in Congress say they are looking forward to the recommendations of a bipartisan panel on Iraq led by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Congressman Lee Hamilton. The president and senior Bush administration officials meet with that panel Monday.

Iran’s top nuclear negotiator meets with Russian president
By Associated Press,Saturday, November 11, 2006

MOSCOW - Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Saturday, indicating a strong Russian diplomatic push to get Iran to shift its position on its nuclear program. After the meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov voiced hope for a quick resumption of international talks on Iran’s nuclear program, news reports said.

We will push for our common goal the resumption of talks with six nations, Lavrov said after the meeting with the Iranian nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, according to the ITAR-Tass and Interfax news agencies.Lavrov said Russia and Iran would work to restart talks between Tehran and the five permanent U.N. Security Council members plus Germany.

We think it’s possible, if there is a goodwill, to find mutually acceptable basis for the resumption of talks on the basis of the proposals of the six and Iran’s response to them, Lavrov said. Larijani, said Friday that Tehran would push ahead with its nuclear program, and suggested it could break off ties with the U.N. nuclear watchdog if the world inflicts punishments proposed by European nations. In a familiar mix of threats and offers, Larijani said Iran wanted negotiations to ease the mounting standoff over fears it is seeking nuclear weapons, but that it would not abandon what he insisted was a peaceful nuclear energy program.

Moscow is seeking to revive its proposal to move Iran’s uranium enrichment work to Russian soil to assuage international concerns that Iran could use the process to develop weapons. Larijani said Friday that the proposal remains on the table, but there was no evidence of movement toward Iranian acceptance.

We want to use our rights under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and in this context there will be no retreat, but we are ready for negotiations, Larijani said Friday. He said Iran was prepared to renew negotiations with the European Union’s top diplomat, Javier Solana, or to hold talks in any other format, according to Russian news agencies. The European draft resolution that would impose U.N. sanctions on Iran will not promote a political solution of the problem, Larijani said. Those who support adopting the resolution want to aggravate the problems of the region. With Russia calling for major changes that would water down the proposed sanctions, the visit appeared to highlight divisions among the five permanent Security Council members over how to deal with Iran’s refusal to halt its enrichment program. In comments that dovetailed with Russia’s warnings that too much pressure could deepen Iran’s defiance, Larijani warned that Tehran would reconsider its ties with the International Atomic Energy Agency if the council adopted the European proposal. We will reconsider relations with the IAEA if the United Nations passes the ... resolution ignoring Russia’s amendments, Russian news agencies quoted him as saying. Iran has repeatedly threatened to respond to sanctions by blocking IAEA inspections of its nuclear facilities.

While they recently agreed in principle on sanctions, both Russia and China have continued to publicly push for dialogue instead of U.N. punishment, despite the collapse last month of a European Union attempt to entice Iran into talks. Both countries have major commercial ties with Iran and can veto U.N. Security Council resolutions as permanent members. The five permanent U.N. Security Council members and Germany offered Iran a package of economic incentives and political rewards in June if it agreed to freeze its uranium enrichment effort. But Tehran has said it would continue enrichment, a process that is central to both civilian power generation and the production of nuclear weapons. The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty allows for peaceful nuclear power programs, but Iran’s activities and its secrecy have led to fears it is seeking nuclear weapons. Larijani insisted that was not the case, saying that nuclear weapons have no place in our defense doctrine, Russian news agencies reported. The European draft resolution would order all countries to ban the supply of material and technology that could contribute to Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, measures that could damage Russia’s nuclear and arms-industry ties with Tehran.Bostonherald.com

Al Qaeda releases message
Leader says group mobilized 12,000 fighters in Iraq
November 11, 2006,detroit free press

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq claimed in a new audiotape Friday to be winning the war faster than expected in Iraq and said it had mobilized 12,000 fighters who had vowed to die for God's sake. The U.S. military, meanwhile, reported three U.S. soldiers and a Marine were killed Thursday in Iraq, the U.S. military said, bringing the number of Americans who have died in the country so far this month to 25. At least 105 U.S. service members died in October, making it the fourth-deadliest month of the war for U.S. forces. On the audiotape on militant Web sites, the Al Qaeda in Iraq leader also welcomed the Republican electoral defeat that led to the departure of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. He added that the group's fighters would not rest until they had blown up the White House.

The Al Qaeda army has 12,000 fighters in Iraq, and they have vowed to die for God's sake, said a man who identified himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir.Al-Muhajir, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, also urged the United States to stay in Iraq so his group would have more opportunities to kill U.S. troops. We haven't had enough of your blood yet, he said, referring to the United States.

We will not rest from our jihad until we are under the olive trees of Rumieh and we have blown up the filthiest house which is called the White House, al-Muhajir said. It was not clear what Rumieh was referring to.Al-Muhajir became the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S. air strike in June. The tape could not be independently verified.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said the Bush administration had no comment on the tape. The terror group leader applauded this week's U.S. election results, saying, The American people have put their feet on the right path by realizing their president's betrayal in supporting Israel. So they voted for something reasonable in the last elections.Describing President George W. Bush as the most stupid president in U.S. history, al-Masri reached out to the Muslim world and said his group was winning the war in Iraq faster than expected because of U.S. policies.Al Qaeda leader caught: The Iraqi army said it has captured the Egyptian leader of an Al Qaeda cell in restive Anbar province.

Acting on a tip, Iraqi soldiers descended on a building in the city of Rawah, 175 miles northwest of Baghdad, where they arrested local Al Qaeda commander Abu Muhayyam al-Masri, whose name, like that of the group's overall leader, is a pseudonym meaning the Egyptian, a Defense Ministry official said. Two aides, Abu Issam al-Libi, or the Libyan, and Abu Zaid al-Suri, the Syrian, also were arrested, along with nine other members of the cell, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.More deaths: In other violence, six Iraqi soldiers were killed and 10 wounded when a suicide bomber drove his explosives-rigged car into an army checkpoint in the northern city of Tal Afar, the military said.Police said three members of a family were killed by gunmen who stormed their home near Baqubah, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad. At least 33 bodies were found in Baghdad and several nearby cities, morgue officials said.Iraq study group to meet: Bush and his national security team are to meet Monday with members of a commission trying to devise a new course for the war in Iraq. The bipartisan Iraq Study Group, led by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III and former Democratic congressman Lee Hamilton of Indiana, is expected to report its recommendations before the end of the year.Members of the group will have a joint conference at the White House with Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and national security adviser Stephen Hadley.

U.S. Vetoes Condemnation of Gaza Strikes
By JUSTIN BERGMAN,The Associated Press,Washington Post,Saturday, November 11, 2006; 3:56 PM

UNITED NATIONS /The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council draft resolution Saturday that sought to condemn an Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip and demand Israeli troops pull out the territory.

U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said the Arab-backed draft resolution was biased against Israel and politically motivated.

(AP Photo/Mohammed Zaatari) (Mohammed Zaatari - AP)

This resolution does not display an evenhanded characterization of the recent events in Gaza, nor does it advance the cause of Israeli-Palestinian peace to which we aspire and for which we are working assiduously, he told the Security Council. The draft received 10 votes in favor and four abstentions, along with the U.S. vote against. Britain, Denmark, Japan and Slovakia all abstained.

It was the second U.S. veto this year of a Security Council draft resolution concerning Israeli military operations in Gaza. The U.S. blocked action on a document this summer after Israel launched its offensive in response to the capture of an Israeli soldier by Hamas-linked Palestinian militants. In Jerusalem, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said the resolution was very one-sided.It's good that it wasn't accepted by the Security Council, he said.Palestinian U.N. observer Riyad Mansour said he was disappointed by the vote.

You have conveyed today two wrong messages, he told the Security Council. For Israel, you have conveyed to them they can continue to behave above international law. For the Palestinian people, you have conveyed that justice is not being dealt with in a proper way.Qatar's Ambassador Nassir Al-Nasser said the failure of the Security Council to act on the draft will lead to continued Israeli violence against Palestinians.

Any lukewarm reaction or response on our part gives the impression we are shirking from our humanitarian responsibilities, said Al-Nasser, who sponsored the resolution on behalf of the Palestinians.Palestinians strengthened calls for Security Council action earlier this week after an early morning Israeli artillery barrage in the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun killed 19 people Wednesday. In an open session of the General Assembly on Thursday, Mansour called the attack state terrorism and said the perpetrators should be held accountable under international law for war crimes.

Israel has expressed regret for the loss of life in Beit Hanoun but has said it will continue operations to stop militants from launching rockets into Israel. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is scheduled to visit Washington on Sunday to meet with President Bush.

The draft resolution had been weakened slightly in recent days to help improve its chances of passage. A section was added demanding the Palestinian Authority take immediate action to bring an end to violence, including the firing of rockets into Israel.

It also called for the U.N. secretary-general to establish a fact-finding mission to probe Wednesday's attack in Beit Hanoun, a step below ordering a full investigation. In addition, it backed off calls for U.N. observers to be placed on the Gaza-Israel border, asking instead for the possible establishment of an international mechanism for protection of the civilian populations. But in his remarks to the Security Council, Bolton said the draft was still too one-sided. He said it compared legal Israeli military operations with the firing of rockets into Israel an act of terrorism. He called the fact-finding mission unnecessary and said the text failed to condemn the ruling Hamas party's refusal to renounce terrorism.

Both Bolton and Deputy British Ambassador Karen Pierce voiced support for returning to the internationally backed road map peace plan, which has been stalled for years. But Michael O'Hanlon, a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution, said the fact that the council allowed the draft to go to a vote showed the world's frustration with the U.S. not involving other members of the so-called Quartet of Mideast mediators in recent decisions on Israel.

The other members are the U.N., the European Union and Russia. They don't have a stake in the talks and they are more willing now to force our hand, he said. A lot of times the world has felt (the U.S.) has been too pro-Israel, but in this case, people are just fed up.

To highlight the company's focus on companion animals in Canada the business will be managed by Advanced Pet ID, a newly formed division of Advanced ID Corporation.

As part of Advanced ID's program to promote the sale and use of the Canadian ISO microchip standard, the company has contracted with Nadia Selemba to be our Sales Director for the company's Canadian Companion Animal business.

She is an experienced Toronto based sales manager in the pet management industry. I am convinced that pet micro chipping in Canada will benefit from the Canadian ISO standard and I am eager to lead our national sales effort. I will be contacting both our existing loyal customers and new, potential customers as well, says Nadia Selemba. According to Dan Finch, President and CEO of Advanced ID Corporation, We have always considered our companion pet business to be important both for us and the pet owner, but with the emergence of the ISO standard, we see an opportunity to work more closely with the major pet management companies and government agencies to ensure that the pet owner is better served.

As I have previously stated, we expect tremendous growth for AIDO in 2007. However we are looking at an improved 3rd quarter as well. We will show at least a 20% revenue increase in 3rd quarter 2006 over 2nd quarter 2006 and that 3rd quarter 2006 revenue will exceed 3rd quarter 2005 by at least 10%, Dan Finch states.
