Europe must offset US withdrawal from nuclear deal, says Iran foreign minister-Zarif says the bloc must act to cancel out the consequences of the US pullout to protect its own economic concerns, warns Iran could ‘reduce implementation’ of deal-By TOI staff and Agencies-SEP 17,18

Europe must protect its own economic interests by taking action to cancel out the effects of the US pulling out of the nuclear deal with Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif warned in an interview published Saturday.According to Reuters, Zarif told Germany’s Der Spiegel news magazine that Iran could “reduce its implementation” and perhaps raise the levels of uranium enrichment activities if the nuclear agreement was put at risk due to “the actions of the Americans and the passivity of the Europeans.”“The Europeans and other signatories must act to offset the consequences of the US sanctions,” said Zarif.“What is paramount: Europe should do so not for Iran, but for its own sovereign and long-term economic interests.”The Iran agreement, struck in 2015 by the United States, other world powers, and Iran, lifted most US and international sanctions against the country. In return, Iran agreed to restrictions on its nuclear program making it impossible to produce a bomb, along with rigorous inspections.Trump withdrew the US from the landmark nuclear agreement forged under predecessor Barack Obama, saying it was “defective” and unable to rein in Iranian behavior or halt the Islamic Republic’s quest to develop nuclear weapons. He also reimposed some sanctions and emphasized that they would also apply to other nations that did business with Iran.On Wednesday, Intelligence Minister Israel Katz warned that if Iran continues to pursue a nuclear program it will face a military response.Katz was responding to the Iranian nuclear chief’s statement that the Islamic Republic’s program stands ready to build advanced centrifuges and further enrich uranium.Ali Akbar Salehi told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Iran wouldn’t be deterred by US President Donald Trump’s sanctions and withdrawal from the global nuclear deal. But Katz said that if Iran presses forward it will face a “direct threat from the United States and its allies.”The US withdrawal from the deal in May has already badly shaken Iran’s economy, crashing its currency, the rial. Katz said Iran could either cave to Trump’s demands or watch its economy collapse.Salehi had said he hoped the atomic deal would survive, but warned the program would be in a stronger position than ever if not.In a veiled threat to Israel, Salehi said the consequences would be “harsh” if there were any new attacks targeting Iran’s nuclear scientists. A string of bombings, blamed on Israel, targeted a number of scientists beginning in 2010, at the height of Western concerns over Iran’s program.Israel never claimed responsibility for the attacks on the scientists, though Israeli officials have boasted in the past about the reach of the country’s intelligence services. “I hope that they will not commit a similar mistake again because the consequences would be, I think, harsh,” Salehi warned.Israel earlier this year removed tens of thousands of documents and other materials from Iran’s secret nuclear weapons program archive, stealing them from under the regime’s nose in a Mossad operation in Tehran. The material proved that Iran lied when claiming it was not seeking to build a nuclear weapons arsenal, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, and showed that it intends to resume its nuclear weapons program if it can.

Two sons of Egypt’s Mubarak arrested for stock manipulation-Gamal and Alaa Mubarak accused of failing to notify the stock market of agreements to acquire majorities in several banks through front companies-By AFP-TOI-SEPT 17,18

CAIRO, Egypt — The two sons of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak were arrested on Saturday for alleged stock manipulation, a judicial source said.Gamal and Alaa Mubarak are accused alongside three other people of failing to notify the stock market of agreements to acquire majorities in several banks through front companies. The accused attended a hearing at a criminal court in Cairo, where a judge ordered their arrest, and they will be transferred to custody, the same judicial source said. The next hearing has been set for October 20.After three decades in power, Hosni Mubarak was deposed during the 2011 Arab Spring.Under his father’s rule, Gamal Mubarak headed a key ruling party committee and was long seen as his successor.Older brother Alaa stayed out of politics but is accused of having amassed a fortune through his father’s contacts. After being arrested in 2011 for a number of alleged crimes, the two sons had several spells in provisional detention. They have been free for the past three years.Alongside their father, Alaa and Gamal Mubarak were sentenced in May 2015 to three years in jail for diverting more than $11.5 million in public money to maintain presidential palaces.Their sentences were covered by time already served. In March 2017, Hosni Mubarak was acquitted of charges of killing protesters. But the former strongman remains under investigation for alleged corruption.

Lawyer says Israel holding French-US prof under military law after W. Bank clash-Frank Romano’s detention time allegedly extended through the ‘exceptional’ application of military legislation; lawyer unable to confirm if client has undertaken a hunger strike-By TOI staff and Agencies-SEPT 17,18

A French-American university professor, who was arrested Friday during a protest at a Bedouin village in the West Bank slated for demolition by Israel, is being detained until Monday, his lawyer said.Gaby Lasky said Saturday that her client, Frank Romano, was being held in a Jerusalem jail, and that police said he would appear before an Israeli military court on Monday.“In a very exceptional way, military legislation that is enforced in the West Bank has been applied to Frank Romano, who is accused of obstructing the action of Israeli police and soldiers, so that the maximum time before comes before a judge is 96 hours,” Lasky told AFP.She added that Israeli law requires civilians and tourists be held no longer than 24 hours before seeing a judge and that she will ask for an Israeli judge to intervene so that her client’s fate is decided under Israeli law.According to B’Tselem, an Israeli NGO working in the West Bank, Romano has started a hunger strike and will continue “until the abandonment” of the decision to raze the Bedouin village.Lasky told AFP she was unable to confirm the hunger strike.Romano was among dozens of activists in Khan al-Ahmar to try to block the expected demolition of the encampment. Israel’s expected action has drawn international condemnation. On Friday, scuffles broke out between Israeli security forces and pro-Palestinian protesters at the site. Activists said that Romano stood in front of a bulldozer that was clearing barriers that had been set up to slow demolition.Israeli police confirmed three people were detained for causing disturbances at Khan al-Ahmar on Friday, but did not release details of their identities.Last week, the High Court of Justice cleared the way for the demolition of Khan al-Ahmar, rejecting a final appeal amid a growing international outcry over the fate of the West Bank community.Israel says Khan al-Ahmar, a hamlet of corrugated shacks east of Jerusalem, was illegally built and has offered to resettle residents 12 kilometers (7 miles) away.Opponents of the demolition argue that it is part of an effort to enable the expansion of the nearby settlement of Kfar Adumim and to create a region of contiguous Israeli control from Jerusalem almost to the Dead Sea, a move critics say will bisect the West Bank, making a contiguous Palestinian state impossible.Israeli forces on Thursday demolished five trailers that were set up recently outside the hamlet. The trailers, erected out of shipping containers, had been set up earlier in the week as a form of protest against the expected razing.Activist Abdallah Abu Rahmeh said that setting up the white structures, one of them flying a Palestinian flag, served as a message to Israel that “it’s our right to build on our land.”The United Nations and the European Union have repeatedly warned Israel that razing Khan al-Ahmar would undermine peace efforts with Palestinians and constitutes a violation of international law.On Thursday, the EU Parliament passed a resolution saying the impending resolution would set a “negative precedent” for other Bedouin communities facing demolition in the West Bank.“Israel bears full responsibility for providing the necessary services, including education, healthcare and welfare, for the people living under its occupation, in line with the Fourth Geneva Convention,” the resolution read.Israel claims the structures, mostly makeshift shacks and tents, were built without permits and pose a threat to the village residents because of their proximity to a highway. But the villagers — who have lived at the site, then in controlled Jordan, since the 1950s, after the state evicted them from their Negev homes — argue that they had little alternative but to build without Israeli construction permits, as such permits are almost never issued to Palestinians for building in places in Area C of the West Bank, such as Khan al-Ahmar, where Israel has full control over civilian affairs.Under the Oslo Accords, the West Bank was split into three areas: A, which is governed by the PA; B, which is under joint Israeli-PA control; and C, which is under full Israeli control. The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem claims that the demolition is part of a plan to minimize Palestinian presence in Area C, which accounts for 60 percent of the West Bank.

MK asks Civil Service Commission to review Dermer handling of Keyes allegations-Michal Rozin says anti-sexual harassment laws apply to foreign service officials and ambassador’s decision to ignore warning should be investigated-By TOI staff and Raphael Ahren-SEP 17,18

Meretz MK Michal Rozin on Saturday asked the Civil Service Commission to review the allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s foreign media spokesman David Keyes, as well as the US ambassador who decided not to report warnings of Keyes’s inappropriate behavior to the prime minister.“Recently, there have been testimonies from some 14 women who said that Keyes assaulted them sexually, some during his current job,” Rozin wrote in a letter to newly-appointed commissioner Daniel Hershkowitz.Rozin noted US ambassador Ron Dermer has admitted that former Wall Street Journal editor Bret Stephens warned him about Keyes’s sexual misconduct, but that he decided not to inform the prime minister because the allegations were not criminal in nature. But Rozin said that according to Israel’s Law for the Prevention of Sexual Harassment, employers must “take appropriate action” against harassment or any knowledge thereof. She said the 1998 law also applied to Israeli foreign service workers, necessitating a review of Dermer’s decision.“In light of the grave concern over the serial behavior of a senior official in the Prime Minister’s Office, and the turning a blind eye on this subject by several public servants, I request an immediate and comprehensive review into this ostensible sexual harassment affair,” Rozin said.On Friday, Dermer’s office acknowledged that following his appointment to Netanyahu’s office in 2016, Stephens warned the ambassador of Keyes’ behavior. The New York Times said that Stephens told Dermer in the November 2016 phone call that Keyes “posed a risk to women in Israeli government offices.”“Information of the call was not conveyed to the PMO. If Stephens or anyone else had given the ambassador information on sexual assault or any other criminal act towards women perpetrated by anyone in the PMO — whether before or after that person was appointed — he would have notified the PMO immediately,” Dermer’s office said in a statement.Stephens’ comments were reported a day after Keyes said he was “taking time off to clear my name.” That announcement followed an investigative report by The Times of Israel detailing accusations of sexual assault and misconduct by 12 women. Two other women stepped forward on Thursday with additional allegations, including one incident that took place soon after Keyes was hired by Netanyahu. More than a dozen women had come forward as of Friday to complain about Keyes’ behavior; four of them have now been named. One of the original women who accused Keyes, New York State Senate candidate Julia Salazar, on Tuesday detailed her alleged 2013 sexual assault by Keyes in an interview with the Jezebel website. After that, Wall Street Journal reporter Shayndi Raice, responding to Salazar’s allegation, described an “uncomfortable” encounter with Keyes, whom she called a predator. Another woman detailed to The Times of Israel an accusation of physically aggressive behavior by Keyes and said she needed to use physical force to extract herself from his attempts to engage sexually with her.In the wake of the growing number of allegations, a number of female lawmakers called on Netanyahu to suspend Keyes, and have condemned his silence on the matter.Zionist Union MK Stav Shaffir, in a Twitter post on Friday, accused Netanyahu of turning a blind eye to sexual crimes by his employees.“Was Netanyahu unaware of this, too?” she said, following the report on the Dermer warning. “Another case and another case. In the entire world, sexual harassment is dealt with severely and harassers end their careers shamefaced. But per usual, when it’s in Netanyahu’s office, for Netanyahu, anything goes.”Rozin also slammed Netanyahu’s silence, saying it “sends a message of support” for sexual assault.“The brave testimonies that were gathered paint a worrying picture of a pattern of harassment,” Rozin posted on Twitter on Thursday. “While the rest of the world advances and campaigns for zero tolerance to sexual violence, the prime minister… remains silent.”

Palestinian activist: EU should defund BDS like Trump slashed aid for UNRWA-Bassem Eid claims boycott campaigns ‘would cease to exist within 6 months’ if funding drastically cut; EU maintains it does not support BDS efforts-By TOI staff-SEP 17,18

A Palestinian human rights activist lashed out at the European Union for allegedly supporting programs that boycott Israel, saying it comes at the expense of Palestinian dignity and prosperity.Addressing a panel at the EU Parliament in Brussels, Jerusalem-based Bassem Eid told lawmakers that Israeli-Palestinian economic cooperation was the only way to reach peace.“The majority of the Palestinians these days are people who are seeking dignity rather than identity. This is one of the most important issues, and dignity can be achieved only via economic prosperity,” he said in a video posted with English subtitles this week by MEMRI, the Middle East Media Research Institute.Eid, who posted the original footage of his remarks on his own website earlier this month, went on to say the global BDS movement was “us[ing] Palestinians in order to gain power and money.“BDS will never ever want to achieve any kind of peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians,” he said. “The BDS wants to destroy Israel, and, as a Palestinian, I don’t have time for that.”He urged the EU to cut funding to BDS-supporting programs, saying that “if Europe tomorrow will cut the funding on the BDS, like Trump cut the funding on UNRWA, no BDS will exist in the coming six months.”Eid also leveled criticism against the Palestinian Authority, telling EU lawmakers that tens of Palestinian businessmen wanted to attend the panel on economic initiatives at the EU parliament, but that PA had prevented them from participating.BDS, the global movement calling for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against Israel, seeks to isolate the Jewish state over its policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians.Earlier this year, the Ministry of Strategic Affairs published a report claiming the EU gave millions of dollars in donations to nonprofit groups that campaign for boycotts of Israel or have ties to terror groups.EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini blasted Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan and his ministry for the report, which she said was spreading spread disinformation.“We are confident that EU funding has not been used to support boycott of Israel or BDS activities and certainly not to finance terrorism,” she said in a letter to Erdan at the time.Mogherini stressed that the EU “rejects any attempts to isolate Israel and does not support calls for boycott. The EU does not fund actions that are related to boycott activities.”Though the EU officially opposes any boycott of Israel, it has recommended that its member states put special labels on exports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. It has stopped short of banning settlement products, but they do not receive the same tax exemptions that products made in Israel receive. In the years since its formation, the BDS movement has seen limited success among progressive audiences, persuading several church organizations to divest themselves of Israel-related investments and garnering support on US college campuses. Recently, pop singer Lana Del Ray joined a number of other artists who canceled performances in Israel amid pressure from BDS activists.

Hundreds bury boy killed in Gaza clash as conflicting reports surround his death-Hamas says 12-year-old was shot dead by IDF troops; friend says he was hit by tear gas canister; AP reports army has evidence showing he was struck by rock thrown by protester-By TOI staff and Agencies-SEP 17,18
Hundreds of Palestinians attended the funeral Saturday of a 12-year-old boy killed on the Gaza border, as conflicting reports emerged about the circumstances of his death.Israel’s military said its evidence shows the 12-year-old was hit by a rock thrown by protesters, and Gaza rights groups reported he died after being struck “with a solid object,” the AP reported. The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, by contrast, claimed Shady Abdel-al was killed by Israeli fire east of Jabalia in the northern part of the Strip. A spokesman said Saturday he died from head wounds, without elaborating.Mohammed, a 12 year-old friend also from Jabalia refugee camp, said he was with Abdel Aal when he was hit.“We were throwing stones at the fence,” he told AFP.The friend said Shady had been hit by a tear gas canister fired by Israeli soldiers and collapsed instantly.Hundreds of family members and friends attended the boy’s funeral Saturday, with some calling for revenge.“God burn those that burned my heart and killed my son,” said his mother Umm Shadi, who has eight other children.“What is my son guilty of? He is 12 years old,” she added through tears. She said her son had been going to the protests in recent months but she had been opposed. “I banned him but he was going behind our backs,” said the grieving mother. The ministry initially said he was 14 and a medical source had named him as Mustafa Abed Rabbo.“He used to go every Friday to the marches like thousands of other people. This Friday was his destiny to die as a martyr,” the boy’s father, Abdel-Aziz Abdel-al, told Reuters.Protester Hashem Hassan told Reuters he witnessed the boy being shot: “He threw a few stones, which flew just a few yards. He posed no threat.”In May, the Gaza health ministry removed 8-month-old Layla al-Ghandour from their official death toll of Palestinians killed in border clashes with Israeli troops after reports suggested she died from a preexisting medical condition, not from Israeli tear gas as the ministry had claimed.Ghandour’s death intensified condemnation of Israel over the violence, and her funeral was filmed and featured on global TV news broadcasts and newspaper front pages.A Gazan doctor told the Associated Press the infant had a preexisting medical condition and he did not believe her death was caused by tear gas. The Guardian at the time quoted a hospital report that listed “heart defects since birth” in Ghandour and that she suffered a “severe stop in blood circulation and respiration.”Dr. Ashraf Al-Qidra, director of public relations for the ministry, later said Ghandour was already dead when she arrived at the hospital and the cause of her death “wasn’t clear.”In June, a Hamas operative, captured by Israel during a failed effort to breach the border fence, told investigators that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar paid Ghandour’s family NIS 8,000 ($2,206) to falsely tell the media that the infant had died due to tear gas inhalation at the border protests.Ghandour had originally been listed among the 60 Palestinians killed during massive border protests on the Gaza fence on May 14 and 15. Almost all of the other fatalities from those days were later acknowledged by Hamas to be its members.Tensions along the Gaza border have been high since March, which marked the start of a series of violent protests along the security fence, known collectively as the “March of Return.” About 130 Gazans have been killed, according to AP figures; Hamas has acknowledged that dozens were its members. An Israeli soldier was killed by Palestinian sniper fire. The violence reached a peak on May 14, when over 40,000 Palestinians took part in a violent riot along the border, according to the army, as well as smaller protests the next day.
