company that is linked to the manufacture of the pagers that exploded in

modest building in Budapest with other enterprises. On Wednesday
morning, Associated Press journalists saw the names of multiple
companies, including BAC, posted on pieces of printer paper and taped in

functions, including sugar and oil production, retail jewelry sales and
natural gas extraction.BAC reportedly supplied the thousands of devices
that Lebanese authorities said killed at least 12 people, including two

Herzi Halevi and other officials all issued statements Wednesday evening
which appeared to suggest a full-on war with Hezbollah was brewing,

communications devices used by Hezbollah members across Lebanon caused
widespread casualties, echoing a similar attack a day earlier that
targeted Hezbollah-issued pagers.The IDF also announced Wednesday that
it was redeploying its 98th Division to northern Israel, after months of
operations in the Gaza Strip under the Southern Command.“The center of
gravity is moving north. We are diverting forces, resources, and energy

put a hold on new exports of weapons of war to Israel while it deals
with legal challenges, according to a Reuters analysis of data and a
source close to the Economy Ministry.Last year, Germany approved arms
exports to Israel worth 326.5 million euros ($363.5 million), including
military equipment and war weapons, a 10-fold increase from 2022,
according to data from the Economy Ministry, which approves export
licenses.However, approvals have dropped this year, with only 14.5
million euros’ ($16.1 million) worth granted from January to August 21,
according to data provided by the Economy Ministry in response to a
parliamentary question.Of this, the “weapons of war” category accounted
for only 32,449 euros.A source close to the ministry cited a senior
government official as saying it had stopped work on approving export
licenses for arms to Israel pending a resolution of legal cases, arguing
that such exports from Germany breached humanitarian law.The ministry
did not respond to requests for comment.In its defense of two cases, one
before the International Court of Justice and one in Berlin brought by
the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR), the
government has said no weapons of war have been exported under any

Wednesday, South Korea's military said, the isolated regime's second
launch in less than a week as tensions mount on the Korean Peninsula.The
missiles were fired from an area north of Pyongyang at 6:50 a.m. and
traveled roughly 250 miles to the northeast, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of
Staff said in a text message to reporters.The South Korean military is
analyzing the launch and closely sharing information with the United
States and Japan, the message said."Our military will maintain the
ability and posture to overwhelmingly respond to any provocation while
keeping a close eye on North Korea's various activities under the firm
South Korea-U.S. joint defense posture," the JCS added.The United States
and Japan also announced that they had detected the launch.Tokyo's
Defense Ministry said that the missiles appeared to splash down in the
sea off the east coast of North Korea and did not reach Japan's

linked to North Korea's alleged illicit supplying of weapons to ally
Russia for use in Ukraine.Pyongyang has denied any sanctions-busting
weapons trade with Russia, but with diplomacy long stalled, it declared
South Korea its "principal enemy" this year and recently moved
nuclear-capable weapons to border areas.The launch follows North Korea's

departed for a trip to Russia, state media reported Tuesday, as the two
regimes continue to strengthen ties amid growing international concern
about their military cooperation.Choe left for Russia on Monday to
attend the Eurasian Women's Forum and the BRICS Women's Forum, state-run
Korean Central News Agency reported in a brief dispatch.The Russian
Embassy in Pyongyang also announced the trip on its Telegram channel,
saying the minister traveled on a commercial North Korean Air Koryo
flight and would participate in the forums in St. Petersburg Wednesday

Czechs to develop small nuclear reactors with Rolls-Royce.

endorsed Britain's Rolls-Royce as a partner for the state-owned power
group CEZ to develop small modular nuclear reactors (SMR).The Czech
Republic depends on CEZ's two nuclear plants for 30 percent of its
electricity generation."The government has acknowledged and endorsed the
partnership with Rolls-Royce SMR," Prime Minister Petr Fiala told
reporters.Prague does not want to buy SMRs but to enable Czech companies
to develop and produce them, he added."This is what the strategic
cooperation with Rolls-Royce enables," said Fiala, adding the first
Czech SMR could be built in the first half of the 2030s.CEZ, which runs
nuclear plants in the southern villages of Temelin and Dukovany, is
planning to install the first SMR at Temelin.Other bidders for the
partnership included US giant Westinghouse, the US-Japanese grouping GE
Hitachi and France's EDF.CEZ said earlier it was planning to install up
to 10 small modular reactors by 2050.Compared with conventional nuclear
reactors, the SMRs are relatively simple to build, as their systems and
components can be factory-assembled and transported as a unit to a
location for installation.They are also more affordable than large power

it had chosen South Korean power giant KHNP to build two conventional

nuclear plant said on Tuesday it has suspended an operation to remove a
sample of highly radioactive material because of a new technical
problem.Extracting the estimated 880 tons of highly radioactive fuel and
debris inside the former power station remains the most challenging
part of decommissioning the facility, which was hit by a catastrophic
tsunami in 2011.Radioactivity levels inside are far too high for humans
to enter and earlier this month engineers began inserting an extendable
device to try and remove a small sample.However, Tokyo Electric Power
Company (TEPCO) had to halt the procedure on Tuesday after noticing that
remote cameras on the apparatus were not beaming back images to the
control centre."We are investigating the cause of the problem," TEPCO
spokesman Tatsuya Matoba told AFP."We need to find out the cause of the
trouble before resuming," he said.TEPCO originally planned to start on
August 22, aiming to collect three grams (0.1 ounces) for analysis, but
technical problems caused a delay.Three of Fukushima's six reactors went
into meltdown after a tsunami triggered by Japan's biggest earthquake
on record swamped the facility in one of the world's worst atomic
accidents.Japan began last year releasing into the Pacific Ocean some of
the 540 Olympic swimming pools' worth of reactor cooling water amassed

chief Ursula von der Leyen has promised to name a designated defence
commissioner as a key part of her new top team.The message is meant to
be clear: Europe is serious about rearming.But while the position was
originally billed as central to the EU's ambitions, there are now major
doubts over how much power it will actually have.That has meant
heavyweight EU member states no longer seem so keen to snaffle up the
role, set to be unveiled as part of the bloc's new line-up in the coming
days."The idea of creating a new position of an exclusive defence
commissioner reflects the growing importance of defence for Europe
today," Burkard Schmitt, defence and security director at industry
association ASD, told AFP."While the ambition behind this idea is
commendable, the key question is: what would it actually mean in
practice?" said Schmitt, who was speaking in a personal capacity rather
than for his organisation.For now, commission president von der Leyen
has been tight-lipped about what exactly the job would entail.One thing
is sure -- the new defence commissioner is not a sort of EU defence
minister.The 27-nation bloc has no army of its own and is not planning

its unlawful presence” in “Occupied Palestinian Territory” within 12
months, including all soldiers and civilians.The resolution welcomed a
July ruling by the International Court of Justice that said Israel’s
control of Palestinian territories and settlements is illegal and should
be withdrawn.The advisory by the highest United Nations court, also
known as the World Court, said this should be done “as rapidly as
possible,” while the General Assembly resolution imposed a 12-month
deadline.The UN also called on states to “take steps towards ceasing the
importation of any products originating in the Israeli settlements, as
well as the provision or transfer of arms, munitions and related
equipment to Israel… where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that
they may be used in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”The resolution
was sponsored by the “State of Palestine” and 29 other countries, mostly
Muslim nations. The UAE was the only Arab country that has recognized
Israel to decline adding its name to the sponsors (though it voted in
favor of the resolution).Some 124 countries supported the measure, 14
opposed it, and 43 abstained. Israel, the US, Czechia, and Argentina
were the largest countries opposing, along with Pacific island nations.
Paraguay and Malawi also opposed the measure.Many European nations
abstained, including Ukraine, the UK, Germany, and Italy, as did Canada
and Australia.The Foreign Ministry said it was “a distorted decision
that is disconnected from reality, encourages terrorism, and harms the
chances for peace.”Israel charged that the resolution ignores October 7,
when Palestinian terror group Hamas led a devastating cross-border
attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and during
which terrorists abducted 251 people who were taken as hostages to
Gaza.The resolution, the ministry said in a statement posted to X,
strengthens Hamas and “the Iranian terrorist state that stands behind
it,” while sending a message that “terrorism pays.” It also makes a
hostage deal less likely, the ministry argued, referring to efforts via
international mediators to reach a ceasefire in exchange for the release
of captives.“Israel will respond accordingly,” the statement
threatened, but did not lay out exactly how it may retaliate against the
Palestinian Authority for the move.“The Palestinian-led UN resolution
which calls for unilateral moves against Israel, will not end the
conflict, but will embolden an already RADICALIZED Palestinian
Authority,” the ministry added on X. “Peace can and will only be
achieved through direct negotiations and the de-radicalization of the
PA.”Foreign Minister Israel Katz previously threatened to “break and
dissolve” the PA if it went ahead with the UN move, his office told the
Times of Israel last week. He also instructed the ministry to prepare a
set of responses against the PA that will be calibrated to match the
severity of the final resolution.The resolution was the first to be
formally put forward by the Palestinian Authority since it gained
additional rights and privileges this month, including a seat among UN
members in the assembly hall and the right to propose draft
resolutions.US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield urged
countries to vote no on Wednesday. Washington — an arms supplier to
Israel and a long-term ally — has long opposed unilateral measures that
its says undermine the prospects of a two-state solution.Countries
debated the resolution on Tuesday.The ICJ advisory opinion is not
binding, but carries weight under international law and may weaken
support for Israel. A General Assembly resolution also is not binding,
but carries political weight. There is no veto power in the
assembly.Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan
and the Gaza Strip from Egypt — all areas the Palestinians want for a
state — in the 1967 Six Day War. It has since built settlements in the
West Bank and steadily expanded them. It had settlements in the Gaza
Strip until removing them under the 2005 Disengagement, following which
Hamas took control of the territory.The General Assembly on October 27
last year called for an immediate humanitarian truce in Gaza with 120
votes in favor. In December, 153 countries voted to demand an immediate
humanitarian ceasefire. Israel has vowed to continue fighting until the
hostages are returned and Hamas’s rule over the territory is ended.The
Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank, represents the
Palestinian people at the UN, where it is a non-member observer state
and the delegation is known as the “State of Palestine.”The UN
resolution came days before world leaders travel to New York for their
annual UN gathering. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to address
the 193-member General Assembly on September 26, the same day that
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will also do so.

is still working with Egypt and Qatar to come up with a revised
Israel-Hamas agreement.U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in
Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday morning, his tenth trip to the Middle East
since Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre.“The secretary will meet with Egyptian
officials to discuss ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza that
secures the release of all hostages, alleviates the suffering of the
Palestinian people, and helps establish broader regional security,”
according to the U.S. State Department.Washington is still working with
Egypt and Qatar to come up with a revised Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal,
U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday.No
timetable was presented for a new draft agreement, but Miller said the
United States was “working expeditiously to try to develop that
proposal.” Blinken said last week that more than 90% of the issues have
been agreed to by both Israel and Hamas.“So we’re down to a handful of
issues, not even a handful of issues that are hard but fully resolvable
in our judgment. And as we’ve said before, when you get down to the last
10%, the last 10 meters, those are almost by definition the hardest
ground to cover, but we believe that these are fully resolvable,” said
Blinken.“Right now, we are working with our Egyptian and Qatari
counterparts to work together to bridge any remaining gaps, and in the
coming time, very soon, we’ll put that before the parties, and we’ll see
what they say,” he added.In Monday’s comments, Miller confirmed the two
main obstacles to reaching an agreement: Jerusalem’s insistence on
maintaining security control of the buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt,
called the Philadelphi Corridor; and specifics regarding the Palestinian
terrorists to be released from Israeli prisons in return for hostages
held by Hamas in Gaza.
