At the autumn equinox (September) when the cold tongue develops over the Atlantic, the advection of cool and dry air from the cold ocean suppresses deep convection over the equatorial Amazon (see Figs. 10.1B and 10.2A).

Over the ocean, patterns of SST and the position of the ITCZ are tightly coupled, with major rainfall confined to a band of high SSTs above 27oC. In March-April, the rain band is located nearly on the equator, onto which the trades converge from both hemispheres. SST is uniformly warm in the equatorial zone of 10°S–5°N, making March-April the time when the Atlantic ITCZ is very sensitive to even small changes in interhemispheric SST gradient (see Section 10.3). As the equatorial cold tongue develops in June and persists through September, the ITCZ is kept north of the equator coupled with the northward movement of the high-SST band. The oceanic ITCZ reaches its northernmost position in September, lagging its northward movement over the continents because of the larger heat capacity of the ocean mixed layer. In July-August, rainfall in the ITCZ is considerably stronger than in March-April, despite a 1°C decrease in SST beneath the ITCZ (see Fig. 10.1). This strengthening of ITCZ convection may be due to the abundance of strong westward propagating easterly wave disturbances that help trigger convection over the ocean. Of a timescale of 3 to 9 days, these disturbances originate from the African rain band and grow on the meridional and vertical shear of the African easterly jet (see Section 5.4). These easterly African waves further amplify in the tropical Atlantic, some into tropical storms and hurricanes that make landfall in the Caribbean and southern United States.

Abstract-Tropical Atlantic climate is similar in many aspects to that of the eastern Pacific, including a northward-displaced intertropical convergence zone and equatorial cold tongue. Interannual variability in rainfall over certain continental regions of South America and Africa is associated with recurrent patterns of coupled sea surface temperature (SST) and trade wind anomalies over the tropical Atlantic. We begin with a brief overview of the seasonal cycle, followed by a survey of interannual variability in the equatorial Atlantic (Section 10.2), which is akin to El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Section 10.3 concerns off-equatorial SST variability. The tropical Atlantic is influenced by, and may influence, climate variability in other regions such as ENSO. Section 10.4 examines the interactions with the Pacific. Section 10.5 discusses large-scale environmental influences on tropical cyclone statistics (genesis and intensity), including the ENSO effect on Atlantic hurricanes through baroclinic equatorial waves that modulate vertical wind shear.
Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

These thunderstorms can reach, and sometimes exceed, 16 kilometres, 55,000 feet or 10 miles in height above the surface.The air that is forced to rise along the ITCZ moves towards the poles and slowly descends leading to large areas of high pressure in the sub-tropics, sometimes known as the horse latitudes, and bring largely benign weather conditions to places like the Azores. The resulting circulation that forms with air converging near the surface around the equator and diverging above is known as the Hadley Cell.The ITCZ moves throughout the year and follows the migration of the Sun’s overhead position typically with a delay of around 1-2 months. As the ocean heats up more slowly than land, the ITCZ tends to move further north and south over land areas than that over water. In July and August, the ITCZ lies well to the north of the equator over Africa, Asia and Central America before moving south into South America, central Africa and Australia by January and February.Another term for the ITCZ, used historically in seafaring circles, is the ‘doldrums’ since the winds along the band of low pressure are typically calm, trapping ships for days or even weeks at time leaving them stranded.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz has threatened to “break and dissolve” the Palestinian Authority if they move forward with aggressive measures against Israel in the United Nations, his office told The Times of Israel on Sunday.The threat came as the PA submitted a draft resolution to the General Assembly demanding that Israel be forced to implement the decisions of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the UN’s top court. The IDF opened an investigation on Saturday into an incident in which civilians allegedly gave cookies made with hashish to soldiers on a base in southern Israel.According to the Ynet news site, citizens came to the base over the weekend and brought cookies for soldiers.Three soldiers who ate the cookies began to feel ill and went to be examined at the base’s medical clinic. Their condition reportedly improved and they did not require hospital treatment.Initially it was suspected the cookies were spoiled, Ynet said. It was then suspected that the cookies contained drugs.An IDF spokesperson said, “A number of reservists felt ill after receiving food donations from civilians. Three Israeli men were killed in a terrorist shooting attack at the Allenby Bridge Crossing between Jordan and the West Bank on Sunday morning, authorities said.The attack was carried out by a Jordanian truck driver who had arrived from Jordan. The crossing, also known as the King Hussein Bridge, is the West Bank’s sole crossing with Jordan.The three victims were named Yohanan Shchori, 61, a father of six from the West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Efraim, Yuri Birnbaum, 65, from the settlement of Na’ama, and Adrian Marcelo Podzamczer, from the settlement city of Ariel.According to the military and Israel Airports Authority officials — the latter of which manages the land crossing — the gunman got out of the truck he was driving during an inspection at the terminal and opened fire at several of the crossing’s workers, killing three.IAA security guards returned fire at the terrorist, killing him.He was identified by Israeli security sources as Maher Dhiab Hussein al-Jazi, 39, a Jordanian national from the southern Jordan town of Udhruh, east of Petra.The Magen David Adom ambulance service said its medics treated the three men at the scene, but were forced to declare their deaths.The Israel Defense Forces described the shooting as a terror attack. The BBC breached its own editorial guidelines 1,533 times in its early coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, according to a new report detailed by The Telegraph.Researchers led by British-Israeli lawyer and longtime BBC critic Trevor Asserson used artificial intelligence to analyze the first four months of coverage by the network, beginning with the Hamas terror group’s attack on Israel on October 7 that started the war, and found “a deeply worrying pattern of bias” against Israel.The researchers, a team of about 20 lawyers and 20 data scientists, used artificial intelligence to analyze some nine million words of coverage, across several languages and platforms. Their report runs about a hundred pages and will be released to the public on Monday, according to The Spectator.The report found that in BBC coverage Israel was associated with war crimes, genocide, and international law violations far more often than Hamas was. It also claimed that the BBC downplayed Hamas terrorism, and asserted that the BBC’s Arabic service was among the most biased global media outlets in covering the Israel-Hamas conflict.A BBC spokesman said the network had “serious questions about the methodology of this report, particularly its heavy reliance on AI to analyse impartiality, and its interpretation of the BBC’s editorial guidelines.“We don’t think coverage can be assessed solely by counting particular words divorced from context. Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed early Sunday they shot down another American-made MQ-9 drone flying over the country, marking potentially the latest downing of the multimillion-dollar surveillance aircraft. The US responded with airstrikes over Houthi-controlled territory, the rebels said.The US military told The Associated Press it was aware of the claim but has “received no reports” of American military drones being downed over Yemen.The rebels offered no pictures or video to support the claim as they have in the past, though such material can appear in propaganda footage days later.However, the Houthis have repeatedly downed General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper drones in the years since they seized Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, in 2014. Anti-Israel protesters at Harvard University chanted “Long live the intifada” and “Globalize the intifada,” as they marched through campus on Friday, three days after classes began, indicating the summer break did little to temper tensions over Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.The chants referred to periods of deadly Palestinian terror attacks against Israeli civilians in the late 1980s and early 1990s and again in the early 2000s in which over a thousand Israelis were killed.The protest was held under heavy police presence, the Harvard Crimson reported.The university newspaper said the 80-strong march, organized by the group Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine, ended in a rally outside a campus building where interim university president Alan Garber met with HOOP representatives to discuss their demand that Harvard divest from Israel.“No matter what the university says or does, our demands have always been crystal clear: Disclose and divest,” the Crimson quoted HOOP organizer Tamar Sella as saying. “These meetings were never the end goal of our campaign. ”Garber had agreed to hold the meeting in May, as part of his efforts to negotiate a peaceful end to the university’s pro-Palestinian encampment. According to the Crimson, five students at the 20-day encampment were suspended, and over 20 put on probation.Harvard and other elite US campuses have emerged as hotbeds of anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian activity amid the war in Gaza sparked by Hamas’s October 7 rampage through southern Israel, in which 1,200 were killed and 251 taken hostage.Hours after the attack, some 30 Harvard undergraduate groups said the blame for the devastating terror assault lay entirely with Israel.A task force charged with reporting on antisemitism at Harvard concluded in June that Israeli students at the Ivy League university were facing “dire” exclusion.Harvard’s handling of Jewish student concerns has been under intense criticism since October 7. Harvard President Claudine Gay resigned in January, a month after a congressional hearing at which she failed to say whether “calls for the genocide of Jews” violated university conduct.Though the university’s board of directors decided against firing her following the disastrous performance, Gay stepped down when conservative activists published evidence that her academic work contained numerous instances of plagiarism.
