operate” against terror groups in the area, following recent rocket

Assembly was called to debate the case of Can Atalay, who was elected
from prison as a parliamentary deputy for the Workers’ Party of Turkey,
or TIP, in last year’s election.He had been sentenced the previous year
to 18 years imprisonment for his role in anti-government protests in
2013, which challenged the rule of Erdogan, then Turkey’s prime
minister.Since being elected, Atalay has been fighting to take his seat

Hezbollah launched a barrage
of some 55 rockets at a northern Israeli kibbutz on Saturday in what it
said was a response to an Israeli airstrike overnight that killed at
least 10 people and wounded five others. The Israel Defense Forces said
it targeted a weapons depot belonging to the terror group.In a separate
incident Saturday, two IDF soldiers were wounded in an explosive drone
strike on a military position near the northern community of Misgav Am,
the military said. One of the soldiers was listed in serious condition,
while the other was lightly hurt. Hezbollah claimed the attack saying it

HaShahar, a kibbutz located some 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the

attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a
near-daily basis since October 8, with the group saying it is doing so
to support Gaza amid the war there.Tensions have soared in the region in
recent weeks after a Hezbollah rocket strike killed 12 children and
teens in the Golan Heights last month. Israel responded with the killing
of Hezbollah’s top commander, Fuad Shukr, in the suburbs of Beirut on

operating in Gaza earlier this year reportedly discovered a Hamas plan
to exhume the remains of British soldiers from World Wars I and II
buried in the Strip and hold them in order to deter the United Kingdom
from moving its embassy from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv.According to The
Telegraph newspaper, the plot was detailed in a seven-page document
discovered by Israel Defense Forces soldiers in an underground compound
in Khan Younis that has been linked to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and the
terror group’s slain military commander Muhammad Deif.The Commonwealth
War Graves Commission administers a cemetery in central Gaza holding the
graves of Christian and some Jewish soldiers from World War I.
According to the Telegraph report, the graveyard holds the remains of
over 3,000 Commonwealth troops, many of whom died fighting the Ottomans
in 1917. It was “immaculately maintained,” the Telegraph said, until the
staff was evacuated to Egypt when war erupted in Gaza following Hamas’s
October 7 massacre in southern Israel.The plan to exhume the bodies was
reportedly made after then-British prime minister Liz Truss said in
late 2022 that she was considering moving the UK embassy to Jerusalem
from Tel Aviv.Apart from pressuring the UK to retract that intention,
the terror group had reportedly planned on demanding that London
evacuate the soldiers’ remains outside of Gaza or pay “lease fees”

political elite and its military if any country desecrates the corpses
of its soldiers,” it added, noting that forcing the UK to engage with
the terror group, which controlled Gaza from 2007, would also be

Truss’s pledge, made shortly before she left office, saying in November
2022 that it would not relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,
at which point the plot was apparently dropped.Although the plot was

surrounding the cosmic rock that killed the dinosaurs has stirred
scientists for decades, but a new study has revealed some important —
and far-out — data about the impactor’s origin story.Researchers, whose
findings were published Thursday in the journal Science, used an
innovative technique to demonstrate that the apocalyptic culprit which
slammed into the Earth’s surface 66 million years ago, causing the most
recent mass extinction, had formed beyond Jupiter’s orbit.They also
refute the idea that it was a comet.The new insights into the apparent
asteroid that cratered into Chicxulub, in what is present-day Mexico’s
Yucatan Peninsula, could improve the understanding of celestial objects
that have struck our planet.“Now we can, with all this knowledge… say
that this asteroid initially formed beyond Jupiter,” Mario
Fischer-Godde, lead author of the study and a geochemist at the
University of Cologne, told AFP.The conclusions are particularly
notable, given how rarely this type of asteroid collides with Earth.Such
information may well prove useful in assessing future threats, or
determining how water arrived on this planet, Fischer-Godde
said.Sediment samples-The new findings are based on an analysis of
sediment samples formed between the Cretaceous and Paleogene eras, the
time of the asteroid’s cataclysmic impact.Researchers measured the
isotopes of the element ruthenium, not uncommon on asteroids, but
extremely rare on Earth. So by inspecting the deposits in multiple
geological layers that mark the debris from the impact at Chicxulub,
they could be sure that the ruthenium studied came “100 percent from
this asteroid.”“Our lab in Cologne is one of the rare labs that can do
these measurements,” and it was the first time such study techniques
were used on impact debris layers, Fischer-Godde said.Ruthenium isotopes
can be used to distinguish between the two main groups of asteroids:
C-type, or carbonaceous, asteroids that formed in the outer solar
system, and S-type silicate asteroids from the inner solar system,
nearer the sun.The study affirms that the asteroid that triggered a
mega-earthquake, precipitated a global winter and wiped out the
dinosaurs and most other life, was a C-type asteroid that formed beyond
Jupiter.Studies from two decades ago had already made such an assumption
but with far less certainty.The conclusions are striking, because most
meteorites — pieces of asteroids that fall to Earth — are S-types,
Fischer-Godde pointed out.Does that mean the Chicxulub impactor formed
beyond Jupiter and made a beeline for our planet? Not necessarily.“We
cannot be really sure where the asteroid was kind of hiding just before
it impacted on Earth,” Fischer-Godde said, adding that after its
formation, it may have made a stopover in the asteroid belt, located
between Mars and Jupiter and where most meteorites originate.Not a
comet-The study also dismisses the idea that the destructive impactor
was a comet, an amalgam of icy rock from the very edge of the solar
system. Such a hypothesis was put forward in a much-publicized study in
2021, based on statistical simulations.Sample analyses now show that the
celestial object was far different in composition from a subset of
meteorites which are believed to have been comets in the past. It is
therefore “unlikely” the impactor in question was a comet, Fischer-Godde
said.As to the wider usefulness of his findings, the geochemist offered
two suggestions.He believes that more accurately defining the nature of
asteroids that have struck Earth since its beginnings some 4.5 billion
years ago could help solve the enigma of the origin of our planet’s
water.Scientists believe water may have been brought to Earth by
asteroids, likely of the C-type like the one that struck 66 million
years ago, even though they are less frequent.Studying past asteroids
also allows humanity to prepare for the future, Fischer-Godde said.“If
we find that earlier mass extinction events could also be related to
C-type asteroid impacts, then… if there’s ever going to be C-type
asteroid on an Earth-crossing orbit, we have to be very careful,” he
said, “because it might be the last one we witness.”
