HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.(IN 1 HR THE STOCK MARKETS WORLDWIDE WILL CRASH)
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

MARK OF THE BEAST (engraved microchip in your hand or forehead)

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, (SLAVE) to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM

REVELATION 16:1-2
1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

I KNOW THIS MARK WILL BE A MICROCHIP IMPLANT UNDER THE SKIN. LETS LOOK UP WHAT THE WORD MARK SAYS IN REVELATION 13:16-18, 14:9,11, 15:2, 16:2, 19:20, 20:4-ALL THESE VERSES FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION SPEAK OF THIS DICTATORS MARK. NOW LETS SEE WHAT IT MEANS FROM STRONGS EXAUSTIVE CONCORDANCE OF THE BIBLE. UNDER MARK PAGE 684.MARK UNDER MARK. THE OLD TESTAMENT IS UNDER HEBREW AND THE NEW TESTAMENT IS UNDER GREEK. SO WHEN WE LOOK UNDER REVELATION 13:16-17 WE SEE IT IS UNDER GREEK, SO WE GO TO GREEK IN THE BACK SECTION AND GO TO 5480 TO SEE WHAT IT SAYS THIS MARK WOULD BE. SO LETS GET TO IT.MARK IN STRONGS GREEK 5480 XAPAYUA CHARAGMA, KHAR-AG-MAH: FROM THE SAME AS 5482: A SCRATCH OR ETCHING, I.E STAMP (AS A BADGE OF SERVITUDE), OR SCULPTURED FIGURE-(STATUE):-GRAVEN, MARK FROM 5482 XAPAE CHARAX, KHAR-AX; FROM XAPAOOW CHARASSO (TO SHARPEN TO A POINT; AKIN TO 1125 THROUGH THE IDEA OF SCRATCHING); A STAKE, I.E (BYIMPL.) Latinstimulus, etc.; German stechen, English stick, sting, etc.; Curtius, § 226)), a mark pricked in or branded upon the body. According to ancient oriental usage, slaves and soldiers bore the name or stamp of their master or commander branded or pricked (cut) into their bodies to indicate what master or general they belonged to, and there were even some devotees who stamped themselves in this way with the token of their gods (cf. Deyling, Observations, iii., p. 423ff); hence, τά στίγματα τοῦ (κυρίου so Rec.) Ἰησοῦ, the marks of (the Lord) Jesus, which Paul in Galatians 6:17 says he bears branded on his body, are the traces left there by the perils, hardships, imprisonments, scourgings, endured by him for the cause of Christ, and which mark him as Christ's faithful and approved votary, servant, soldier (see Lightfoots Commentary on Galatians, the passage cited). Dow drops 1,000 points, and Japanese stocks suffer worst crash since 1987 as markets quake worldwide-Nearly everything on Wall Street is tumbling as fear of a slowing U.S. economy grows and sets off another sell-off for financial markets around the world.-By  STAN CHOE-August 5, 2024

NEW YORK (AP) — A scary Monday that started with a plunge abroad reminiscent of 1987 ’s crash swept around the world and pummeled Wall Street with more steep losses, as fears worsened about a slowing U.S. economy. The S&P 500 dropped 3% for its worst day in nearly two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average reeled by 1,033 points, or 2.6%, while the Nasdaq composite slid 3.4% as Apple, Nvidia and other Big Tech companies that used to be the stars of the stock market continued to wilt. The drops were the latest in a global sell-off that began last week. Japan’s Nikkei 225 helped begin Monday by plunging 12.4% for its worst day since the Black Monday crash of 1987.It was the first chance for traders in Tokyo to react to Friday’s report showing U.S. employers slowed their hiring last month by much more than economists expected. That was the latest piece of data on the U.S. economy to come in weaker than expected, and it’s all raised fear the Federal Reserve has pressed the brakes on the U.S. economy by too much for too long through high interest rates in hopes of stifling inflation.Professional investors cautioned that some technical factors could be amplifying the action in markets, and that the drops may be overdone, but the losses were still neck-snapping. South Korea’s Kospi index careened 8.8% lower, and bitcoin dropped below $54,000 from more than $61,000 on Friday.Even gold, which has a reputation for offering safety during tumultuous times, slipped about 1%.That’s in part because traders began wondering if the damage has been so severe that the Federal Reserve will have to cut interest rates in an emergency meeting, before its next scheduled decision on Sept. 18. The yield on the two-year Treasury, which closely tracks expectations for the Fed, briefly sank below 3.70% during the morning from 3.88% late Friday and from 5% in April. It later recovered and pulled back to 3.89%.“The Fed could ride in on a white horse to save the day with a big rate cut, but the case for an inter-meeting cut seems flimsy,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management. “Those are usually reserved for emergencies, like COVID, and an unemployment rate of 4.3% doesn’t really seem like an emergency.”Of course, the U.S. economy is still growing, the U.S. stock market is still up a healthy amount for the year and a recession is far from a certainty. The Fed has been clear about the tightrope it began walking when it started hiking rates sharply in March 2022: Being too aggressive would choke the economy, but going too soft would give inflation more oxygen and hurt everyone.Goldman Sachs economist David Mericle sees a higher chance of a recession within the next 12 months following Friday’s jobs report. But he still sees only a 25% probability of that, up from 15%, in part “because the data look fine overall” and he does not “see major financial imbalances.”Some of Wall Street’s recent declines may simply be air coming out of a stock market that romped to dozens of all-time highs this year, in part on a frenzy around artificial-intelligence technology. Critics have been saying for a while that the stock market looked expensive after prices rose faster than corporate profits.“Markets tend to move higher like they’re climbing stairs, and they go down like they’re falling out a window,” according to JJ Kinahan, CEO of IG North America. He chalks much of the recent worries to euphoria around AI subsiding, with pressure rising on companies to show how AI is turning into profits, and “a market that was ahead of itself.”The only way for stocks to look less expensive is either for prices to fall or for their profits to strengthen. Expectations are still high for the latter, with growth for S&P 500 profits this past quarter looking to be the strongest since 2021.Professional investors also pointed to the Bank of Japan’s move last week to raise its main interest rate from nearly zero. Such a move helps boost the value of the Japanese yen, but it could also force traders to scramble out of deals where they borrowed money for virtually no cost in Japan and invested it elsewhere around the world.Treasury yields also pared their losses Monday after a report said growth for U.S. services businesses was a touch stronger than expected. Growth was led by arts, entertainment and recreation businesses, along with accommodations and food services, according to the Institute for Supply Management.Still, stocks of companies whose profits are most closely tied to the economy’s strength took sharp losses on the fears about a slowdown. The small companies in the Russell 2000 index dropped 3.3%, washing out what had been a revival for it and other beaten-down areas of the market.Making things worse for Wall Street, Big Tech stocks tumbled as the market’s most popular trade for much of this year continued to unravel. Apple, Nvidia and a handful of other Big Tech stocks known as the “ Magnificent Seven ” had propelled the S&P 500 to record after record this year, even as high interest rates weighed down much of the rest of the stock market. But Big Tech’s momentum turned last month on worries investors had taken their prices too high and expectations for future growth are becoming too difficult to meet. A set of underwhelming profit reports that began with updates from Tesla and Alphabet added to the pessimism and accelerated the declines.Apple fell 4.8% Monday after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway disclosed that it had slashed its ownership stake in the iPhone maker.Nvidia, the chip company that’s become the poster child of Wall Street’s AI bonanza, fell even more, 6.4%. Analysts cut their profit forecasts over the weekend for the company after a report from The Information said Nvidia’s new AI chip is delayed. The recent selling has trimmed Nvidia’s gain for the year to nearly 103% from 170% in the middle of June.Another Big Tech titan, Alphabet, fell 4.4% after a U.S. judge ruled Google’s search engine has been illegally exploiting its dominance to squash competition and stifle innovation. All told, the S&P 500 fell 160.23 points to 5,186.33. The Dow sank 1,033.99 to 38,703.27, and the Nasdaq composite tumbled 576.08 to 16,200.08.Worries outside corporate profits, interest rates and the economy are also weighing on the market. The Israel-Hamas war may be worsening, which beyond its human toll could cause sharp swings for the price of oil. That’s adding to broader worries about potential hotspots around the world, while upcoming U.S. elections could further scramble things.Wall Street has been concerned about how policies coming out of November could impact markets, but the sharp swings for stock prices could affect the election itself. The threat of a recession is likely to put Vice President Kamala Harris on the defensive. But slower growth could also further reduce inflation and force former President Donald Trump to pivot from his current focus on higher prices to outlining ways to revive the economy.“It comes down to jobs,” said Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial. Jobs drive spending by U.S. consumers, which in turn is the biggest part of the U.S. economy.“When we get to election day, the unemployment rate is going to be extremely important.”___AP Business Writers Elaine Kurtenbach, Matt Ott, Christopher Rugaber and Damian J. Crypto Plunges: Bitcoin Down 11% Overnight-Raw Egg Nationalist | Infowars.com-August 5th 2024, 4:01 am

Investors have been shedding riskier assets-Bitcoin's price is at the lowest since February-The overall value of cryptocurrency plunged on Sunday, falling by $270 billion as investors cashed out of risky assets.Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, recorded an 11% drop and Ether a 21% drop. Binance’s BNB is also down 15% and Solana is down 10%.The plunge in cryptocurrencies is part of a broader fall in equities in the Asia-Pacific market and US. Japan’s Nikkei 225 has fallen by 7% after losses last week and the Bank of Japan’s announcement that it would increase its interest rate to its highest level in 16 years. The US Nasdaq fell by 3.4%, with significant contributions to the decrease coming from Amazon and Nvidia. Disappointing economic performance in the US, including a poor jobs report, growing unemployment and decline in the manufacturing sector, is also to blame.Bitcoin’s price is now the lowest it’s been since February, at $54,000, which is still a 23% increase this year.Ether fell to around $2,300, wiping out all of the currency’s gains for the year.

The Canadian Press-Wall Street headed sharply lower again after Japan's Nikkei index tumbles to worst loss since 1987-Elaine Kurtenbach And Matt Ott-Mon, August 5, 2024 at 8:34 a.m. EDT-The Associated Press

U.S. stocks are set to open sharply lower Monday, adding to steep declines in Asia and Europe and deepening a sell-off tied to worries about a recession in the U.S. economy. Japan’s main index plunged more than 12%, its worst day since 1987.S&P 500 futures are down 3.1% and Nasdaq futures are sinking 4.7%. Investors are fleeing the Big Tech names that until recently had powered the U.S. market higher: Apple fell more than 7% and Meta was down 6% in premarket trading. Chipmaker Nvidia tumbled 12.5%.Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.1%.A report Friday showing hiring by U.S. employers slowed last month by much more than expected followed weak reports on manufacturing and construction and stoked fears the U.S. economy was finally bending under the pressure of high interest rates. Investors worldwide sold stocks and moved to the safety of bonds, pushing bond yields sharply lower. The shakeup began just a couple of days after U.S. stock indexes had jumped to their best day in months after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell set the stage for possible rate cuts to begin in September. But after Friday's jobs report, worries are rising the Fed may have kept its main interest rate at a two-decade high for too long, raising risks of a recession in the world’s largest economy. A rate cut would make it less expensive for U.S. households and companies to borrow money, but it could take time for the effects to boost the economy.Until Friday, there had been relatively few huge market swings in the past year.A bonanza around artificial intelligence technology helped drive Big Tech stocks higher, while other areas of the market held up amid rising hopes for coming cuts to interest rates by the Federal Reserve. But professional investors have been warning that shakier times may be ahead given uncertainty about how quickly the Fed will cut interest rates and other big questions.Monday’s plunge in the Nikkei followed a nearly 6% drop on Friday. In mid-July, the index had risen to all-time highs. Its worst single-day rout was a plunge of 3,836 points, or 14.9%, on Oct. 19, 1987, a global markets crash that was dubbed “Black Monday” but proved to be only a temporary setback despite fears it might have augured a worldwide downturn. On Monday, the Nikkei closed down 4,451.28 points at 31,458.42. It had dropped 5.8% on Friday, making this its worst two-day decline ever.Share prices have fallen in Tokyo since the Bank of Japan raised its benchmark interest rate on Wednesday. The Japanese yen also has fallen sharply, trading at 142.37 yen for one U.S. dollar, down from 146.45 late Friday and sharply below its level of over 160 yen a few weeks ago.Analysts said another factor contributing to the falling share prices was carry trades, where investors borrow money from a country with low interest rates and a relatively weak currency, like Japan, and invest those funds in places that will yield a high return. Investors have been selling stocks to repay those loans as their costs have risen with a stronger yen and higher interest rates.South Korea stocks sank almost 9%.In Europe, markets in London, Paris and Frankfurt each dropped more than 2%.The euro rose to $1.0951 from $1.0923.One of the few bright spots was Kellanova, formerly Kellogg’s, which gained 22% on reports that Snickers owner Mars was deep in talks to acquire the cereal and snackmaker. The latest setback has hit markets heavily weighted toward computer chipmakers like Samsung Electronics and other technology shares: on Monday, South Korea's Kospi plummeted more than 9% as Samsung's shares sank 10.3%. It closed 8.8% lower at 2,441.55.Taiwan's Taiex also crumbled, losing 8.4% as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's biggest chip maker, dropped 9.8%.“To put it mildly, the spike in volatility-of-volatility is a spectacle that underlines just how jittery markets have become,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary. “The real question now looms: Can the typical market reflex to sell volatility or buy the market dip prevail over the deep-seated anxiety brought on by this sudden and sharp recession scare?”The VIX, an index that measures how worried investors are about upcoming drops for the S&P 500, was up 105% as of early Monday. Bitcoin which recently had surged to nearly $70,000, was down nearly 17% at $52,100.00.Oil prices slipped, with U.S. benchmark crude oil giving up $1.41 to $72.11 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, lost $1.35 cents to $75.46 per barrel.Investors will be watching for data on the U.S. services sector from the U.S. Institute for Supply Management due later Monday that may help determine if the sell-offs around the world are an overreaction, Yeap Jun Rong of IG said in a report.Even though worries over weakness in the U.S. economy and volatile markets have rippled around the world, the U.S. economy is still growing, and a recession is far from a certainty. But the mood was decidedly dark.Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost 2.2% to 16,579.97 and the S&P/ASX 200 in Australia declined 3.7% to 7,649.60.The Shanghai Composite index, which is somewhat insulated by capital controls from other world markets, edged higher but then gave way, losing 1.5% to 2,862.56.The S&P 500's 1.8% decline Friday was its first back-to-back loss of at least 1% since April. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.5%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 2.4%, taking it to 10% below its record set last month. That level of drop is what traders call a “correction.”Elaine Kurtenbach And Matt Ott, The Associated Press.

BLACKROCK ALSO DUMPED 50% OF THEIR APPLE STOCKS.

Why Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Dumped 55.8% Of Its Apple Stock-Peter Cohan-Senior Contributor-Aug 3, 2024,01:58pm EDT-

Warren Buffett dumped 55.8% of Berkshire Hathaway’s holdings of Apple stock in the first six months of 2024, according to Reuters.Since the end of 2023 Berkshire has sold 505 million Apple shares — 115 million in the first quarter and another 390 million in the second quarter. As of June 30, that represents a 55.8% reduction in Berkshire’s Apple holdings since the beginning of the year, Reuters noted. Why did he sell so much Apple stock? Should other investors follow suit? I do not know why Buffett sold such a huge chunk of Berkshire’s Apple stock. However, Apple’s tepid growth rate and high valuation suggest the famed investor may have concluded the stock’s prospects are not great. While Apple’s AI offerings could give consumers a reason to upgrade, the iPhone maker’s declining revenues in China, its regulatory woes, and the absence of a compelling growth vector — particularly if Apple Intelligence does not prove to be a killer app — could mean Apple will be lucky to achieve low single digit revenue growth.I suspect other investors will take a cue from Buffett.WWE SummerSlam 2024 Results: Roman Reigns Returns In Bloodline Rules-Apple has been a good investment. Since Buffett began buying the iPhone maker’s stock in 2016, Berkshire has spent roughly $40 billion. Apple shares have delivered a total return of nearly 800% since Berkshire first disclosed its stake, noted the Financial Times.Investing Digest: Know what's moving the financial markets and what smart money is buying with Forbes Investing Digest.By signing up, you agree to our Terms of Service, and you acknowledge our Privacy Statement. Forbes is protected by reCAPTCHA, and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.Although Buffett has praised the company this year, his actions make me wonder whether the words were aimed at getting a higher price for his Apple shares. How so? Buffett slashed Berkshire’s Apple stake 13% in the first quarter of 2024 and jettisoned another 49% in the second quarter, ending June with an Apple position worth $84.2 billion, noted the Wall Street Journal — citing Berkshire regulatory filings.Buffett’s kind words for Apple came in May at Berkshire’s annual meeting. There he called Apple “an even better business” than two other large Berkshire holdings — American Express and Coca-Cola, noted the Journal. At the meeting, he also alluded to tax rates as a reason to take profits in Apple. How so? Selling “a little Apple” this year would benefit Berkshire shareholders should the U.S. raise capital gains taxes in the future “to plug a climbing fiscal deficit,” he said, according to CNBC.Should You Follow Buffett And Sell Your Apple Stock? This raises questions: Now that he has sold more than half his stake in 2024, was Buffett kidding when he referred to selling a “little” Apple? Is the possibility of future capital gains rate increases the real reason he sold so much Apple stock in the first half? Should you follow Buffett and dump your Apple stock?-Reasons To Buy Apple Stock-The best reason to buy Apple stock is the company’s AI strategy — hinging on a revamped Siri digital assistant — which could motivate more people to upgrade their iPhones. The refreshed Siri would “work across apps and retrieve information from messages, emails, calendar, photos and other apps; summarize emails and webpages and transcribe calls; and generate custom emojis and other images,” noted Investor’s Business Daily. The most significant arguments in favor of owning Apple stock include:AI iPhones could give people a reason to upgrade. Some Wall Street analysts think AI capabilities will encourage consumers to upgrade to the iPhone 16 series this fall, IBD reported. The upgrade cycle for AI iPhones will be “stronger for longer,” Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani told IBD because Apple is staggering its rollout of AI features for the iPhone, he added.Old iPhones and satellite connectivity could drive iPhone sales. Many iPhone handsets have not been upgraded for more than four years. Some 270 million iPhones — 18% of the worldwide installed base — were last upgraded more than four years ago, noted Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives. Meanwhile, Apple's plan to add satellite connectivity to its iMessage app this fall “could spur iPhone sales,” LightShed Partners analyst Walter Piecyk told IBD.Reasons To Sell Apple Stock-A significant reason investors owned Apple in recent years was knowing the iPhone maker was Buffett’s largest holding. Therefore, his decision to sell such a large percentage of his Apple stock — with the possibility he will sell more this year — should give investors a reason to think about what is motivating Buffett.Meanwhile, Apple faces significant headwinds:Apple’s decelerating revenue. Between 2010 and 2020, Apple revenue grew at a 15.5% average annual rate. During the pandemic, Apple enjoyed a surge in revenue — growing at a nearly 20% annual rate in 2021 and 2022. Sadly, between 2022 and March 2024, Apple’s revenue declined almost every quarter. Apple’s revenue broke that pattern — rising 5% in the June-2024 ending quarter, according to Apple.Apple’s AI strategy may not add much revenue growth. Apple Intelligence may not represent a significant improvement to the features of AI chatbots now on the market, about which I wrote in my new book Brain Rush. The iPhone is a 17-year-old product whose revenues fell 10% in the first quarter of 2024, according to the company. Upgrading Siri slightly may not be a good enough reason for users to go out and buy new Apple devices — for that, they will need a generative AI killer app — as the iTunes store was for the iPod, according to a June 2024 Forbes post.Apple’s declining iPhone sales in China. In the June-ending quarter, a 14% increase in services revenue offset the 5.7% drop in Apple’s iPhone sales in China. To be sure, as of July 2024, Apple had the biggest smartphone market share in the U.S., with 55.91%, according to Oberlo. However, Apple's market share in China’s smartphone market had dropped to 14% — putting the iPhone in sixth place in the second quarter of 2024, CNBC noted.Apple’s legal woes. On June 24, European Union regulators accused Apple of violating the EU’s Digital Markets Act with its App Store policies, IBD reported. Moreover, Apple faces a lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice — which in March charged Apple’s “restrictive iPhone and App Store policies” with violating antitrust laws. In a statement, Apple said it will “vigorously defend against the lawsuit” which the company said is “wrong on the facts and the law,” reported IBD. Analysts expect the lawsuit to create “headline risk” during its two to three year duration.Apple has little else to propel its growth. In late February, Apple canceled its autonomous EV project, about which I co-authored a business school case, Apple’s Electric Vehicle, after a decade of work and an estimated $10 billion investment. Investment bank Needham called Apple's near-term growth outlook “anemic to negative in a recent report” featured by IBD.Buffett’s reasons for dumping so much Apple could be a simple matter of valuation. When Berkshire began buying, Apple traded for less than 15 times projected earnings — now the iPhone maker trades “around 30 times projected profits in its fiscal year ending in September 2025,” Barron’s reported. The scale of Buffett’s Apple selling in the first half of 2024 suggests he may sell more. “I would have thought it would be really far-fetched for him to sell his remaining stake in Apple, but that doesn’t seem really far-fetched anymore,” Edward Jones analyst Jim Shanahan told Bloomberg in reference to Buffett’s Apple stock sales. “I don’t think zero’s out of the question now.”I am skeptical about whether consumers will find Apple Intelligence sufficiently compelling to spark a wave of iPhone upgrades. If Buffett agrees, he could sell more Apple shares this quarter.

At least 4 killed as tropical storm Debby slams into southeastern U.S.More flooding possible in Florida even as storm moves north to Georgia and S. Carolina, governor warns-The Associated Press · Posted: Aug 05, 2024 6:46 PM EDT

Tropical storm Debby slammed Florida with torrential rain and high winds, contributing to at least four deaths as it turned menacingly toward the Eastern Seaboard's low-lying regions and threatened to flood some of America's most historic Southern cities.

Record-setting rain was expected to cause flash flooding, with up to 76 centimetres possible in some areas, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The potential for high water threatened the historic cities of Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C. Up to 46 centimetres was forecast in central and north Florida. An aerial view shows houses and streets flooded.Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned that just because the storm is moving into Georgia, it doesn't mean the state won't continue to see threats as waterways north of the state border fill up and flow south."It is a very saturating, wet storm," he said during an afternoon briefing at the state's emergency operations centre. "When they crest and the water that's going to come down from Georgia, it's just something that we're going to be on alert for not just throughout today, but for the next week."Debby made landfall along the Gulf Coast of Florida early Monday as a Category 1 hurricane. It has since weakened to a tropical storm and is moving slowly, covering roads with water and contributing to at least four deaths.Tropical storm Debby walloped Florida's Big Bend region Monday morning, bringing a torrential downpour that flooded roads and knocked out power to over 235,000 homes and businesses.Children among the dead-A truck driver died on Interstate 75 in the Tampa, Fla., area after he lost control of his tractor-trailer, which flipped over a concrete wall and dangled over the edge before the cab dropped into the water below. Sheriff's office divers located the driver, a 64-year-old man from Mississippi, in the cab 12 metres below the surface, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.A 13-year-old boy died Monday morning after a tree fell on a mobile home southwest of Gainesville, Fla., according to the Levy County Sheriff's Office. And in Dixie County, just east of where the storm made landfall, a 38-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy died in a car crash on wet roads Sunday night. The Florida Highway Patrol said a 14-year-old boy who was a passenger was hospitalized with serious injuries.swirls of a storm-Power outages, flight delays-More than 300,000 customers remained without power in Florida and Georgia on Monday afternoon, down from a peak of more than 350,000, according to PowerOutage.us and Georgia Electric Membership Corp.DeSantis said some 17,000 linemen were working to restore electricity. He warned residents in affected areas to stay off the roads until conditions are safe.Airports were also affected. More than 1,600 flights had been cancelled across the U.S., many of them to and from Florida airports, according to FlightAware.com. One out of every five flights scheduled to leave Orlando International Airport was cancelled Monday. Nearly 30 per cent of flights scheduled to depart Tampa International Airport were cancelled.Twice as much rain as predicted-Sarasota, Fla., a beach city popular with tourists, was one of the hardest hit by flooding."Essentially, we've had twice the amount of the rain that was predicted for us to have," said Sarasota County Fire Chief David Rathbun in a social media update. The storm made landfall near Steinhatchee, a tiny community in northern Florida of less than 1,000 residents.Rescuers wade through a flooded street.Taylor County, where Steinhatchee is located, closed several roads due to flooding, Sheriff Wayne Padgett said. Trees and power lines had also fallen across some roads.Padgett advised anyone who had evacuated from low-lying or coastal areas to wait before returning to their homes because the tide had not come in, and it was unclear how deep floodwaters might get later.U.S. President Joe Biden was briefed on Debby's progress while at his home in Wilmington, Del., the White House said.Vice-President Kamala Harris has postponed a scheduled trip to Georgia amid the ongoing effects of tropical storm Debby. Harris' presidential campaign said her stop planned in Savannah, Ga., on Thursday, was being put off due to the storm.Local leaders in Savannah said flooding could happen in areas that don't usually get high water if Debby stalls out over the city."This type of rain hovering over us, coming with the intensity that they tell us it is coming, it's going to catch a whole lot of people by surprise," said Chatham County Chairman Chester Ellis.'Historic and potentially unprecedented'In South Carolina, Charleston County interim emergency director Ben Webster called Debby a "historic and potentially unprecedented event" three times in a 90-second briefing Monday morning. The city of Charleston has an emergency plan in place that includes sandbags for residents, opening parking garages so residents can park their cars above floodwaters, and an online mapping system that shows which roads are closed due to flooding.North Carolina and South Carolina have dealt with three catastrophic floods from tropical systems in the past nine years, all causing more than $1 billion US in damage. In 2015, rainfall fed by moisture as Hurricane Joaquin passed well offshore caused massive flooding. In 2016, flooding from Hurricane Matthew caused 24 deaths in the two states and rivers set record crests. Those records were broken in 2018 with Hurricane Florence, which set rainfall records in both Carolinas, flooded many of the same places and was responsible for 42 deaths in North Carolina and nine in South Carolina. What is rapid intensification in hurricanes, and is it happening more often? In Savannah, Jim Froncak piled sandbags into his pickup truck on Monday, as rain was already falling. He said a recent thunderstorm caused so much flooding that he and a friend were able to kayak down a street."That was just a thunderstorm," he said. "So, who knows what could happen with this?"

Top Russian defense official in Tehran to cultivate stronger security ties-Ex-defense minister and head of national security council Sergei Shoigu to meet Pezeshkian, counterparts; Moscow condemned Haniyeh killing, relies on Iranian-made arms in Ukraine-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 5:43 pm-AUG 5,24

Russia’s National Security Council secretary Sergei Shoigu arrived in Tehran Monday for a series of meetings with Iranian counterparts, Russian and Iranian news agencies reported, amid fears of a wider war in the region following last week’s killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.Russia’s state Tass and RIA Novosti news agencies reported that Shoigu, Russia’s former defense secretary, was scheduled to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian; the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian; and chief of the Iranian military’s General Staff, Mohammad Bagheri. The visit was at the invitation of Ahmadian, Iran’s local Tasnim news agency reported. It said the visit’s aim was “strengthening interactions, the examination of regional and international issues, and bilateral political security relations.”Russia on Friday “strongly condemned” the killing of Haniyeh, head of the Hamas terror group’s Doha-based political bureau, in Tehran Wednesday. Moscow warned against “the extremely dangerous consequences of such actions.”Diplomatic efforts have increased to avert an all-out war after Iran vowed to exact “harsh punishment” on Israel, which has neither confirmed nor denied its part in the assassination. On Sunday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi made a rare visit to Tehran to discuss “regional developments.”Pezeshkian has described Russia as a “valued strategic ally.” Russia has cultivated closer ties with Iran since the start of its war with Ukraine and has said it is preparing to sign a wide-ranging cooperation agreement with the Islamic Republic.Reuters reported in February that Iran had provided Russia with a large number of powerful surface-to-surface ballistic missiles. The United States said in June that Russia appeared to be deepening its defense cooperation with Iran and had received hundreds of one-way Iranian-made attack drones that it was using to strike Ukraine, something Moscow denies.A July 19 Wall Street Journal report, which cited US officials, said Russia was considering supplying anti-ship missiles to Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who like Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah are part of the so-called Axis of Resistance network of Iranian proxies.According to the report, Russian President Vladimir Putin has floated the idea in response to the White House’s approval for Ukraine to strike Russia using American-made arms. Two US officials indicated Russia would transfer arms to Yemen via Iranian smuggling routes. The report came after an Iranian-made drone launched by the Houthis killed one person and injured at least eight others in Tel Aviv.Shoigu’s visit to one of Russia’s key political allies underlines his continued significant role even as he has faced criticism over military setbacks in Ukraine and members of his close circle appear to have fallen out of favor. As defense minister, Shoigu visited Iran in September last year. Nikolai Patrushev, Shoigu’s predecessor at the Security Council and a longstanding ally of Putin, visited Iran in late 2022.The former defense minister had been widely criticized for Russia’s setbacks on the battlefield in Ukraine and was accused of incompetence and corruption by mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who launched a brief mutiny in June 2023 to demand his dismissal. Analysis-Hamas officials’ ties with Iran could determine who will replace Haniyeh-Ruling out Mashaal, analysts say slain leader’s replacement must have good relations with Shiite powers, as Hamas looks to Iran for post-war support-By Reuters and ToI Staff Today, 8:24 pm-AUG 5,24

In choosing its next leader, the Hamas terror group will be looking for a candidate who can safeguard deep ties with Tehran, as Iranian support will be more important than ever to help the group recover after the Gaza war, analysts say.Hamas has several potential replacements for Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran last week in an attack widely blamed on Israel, which has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement. They include former leader Khaled Mashaal, who led Hamas for 13 years from outside the Palestinian territories, before passing the baton to Haniyeh in 2017.But experts believe his chances could be hurt by past friction with Shiite Iran and its regional allies, notably Syrian President Bashar Assad. Mashaal was Hamas leader when the group turned on Damascus during the Arab Spring and declared sympathy with the Sunni-led rebellion against him.Iran’s support will be doubly important to Hamas as it seeks to rebuild once the guns fall silent in Gaza. The territory has been devastated by the fighting in the months since October 7 of last year, when thousands of terrorists invaded southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, taking 251 hostages, and sparking the ongoing war. While Hamas continues to fight in Gaza, 10 months of pummeling by Israel have hit it hard. This consideration seems likely to boost the prospects of candidates deemed closer to Tehran, including Khalil al-Hayya, currently serving as Hamas’s deputy leader for Gaza, though he left the territory some years ago.“There might have been some retreat in Mashaal’s chances of taking the place of Haniyeh, because he doesn’t enjoy much support from Iran since he was the one who turned against the Syrian regime and ended the Hamas presence in Damascus,” said Ashraf Abouelhoul, a specialist on Palestinian issues and managing editor of the Egyptian state-owned paper Al-Ahram.“Also the armed wing, which is keen on the concept of rebuilding when the war is over, will be thinking of a candidate whose relations with Iran are strong enough to ensure the rebuilding takes place,” he said. One Hamas official told Reuters the succession had not been settled yet and the deliberations are underway.Hayya says Hamas leadership united-Hayya was known to be very close to Haniyeh. He accompanied him to Tehran for the visit during which the Hamas leader was killed in July.Hayya led Hamas’s negotiating team for hostage-ceasefire talks under Haniyeh’s supervision and also led reconciliation talks with Hamas’s Palestinian rival Fatah in past years.Like Haniyeh, he maintained strong relations with Iran and in 2022, he led a Hamas delegation to Damascus to mend ties with Assad, declaring it a historic meeting.Speaking as Hamas received condolences for Haniyeh’s death in Qatar, Hayya said the movement’s leadership remained united.“Our will is strong and can’t be broken by the martyrdom of one leader or two or three,” he said. “God willing, within days, we will conclude our consultations to choose a new leader.”Hani al-Masri, a Palestinian political analyst, said that in less extraordinary times the group’s Gaza leader, Yahya Sinwar, would have been a candidate.A mastermind of the October 7 attack, Sinwar is widely believed to still be running Hamas’s war from tunnels under Gaza.Hayya’s chances are helped by his good ties to the Shiite terror group Hezbollah in Lebanon, the region’s most powerful Iran-aligned faction, which has been trading fire with Israel throughout the Gaza war.Masri noted Mashaal’s leadership qualities and experience, but said his prospects hinged on healing the rift with Iran: “His weak point is his negative relationships with Iran, Syria and Hezbollah at a time when there is… a joint war.”

Israeli hospitals declare themselves prepared for mass casualty events-Since the start of war, hospitals have conducted drills, stockpiled supplies, and moved wards underground, readying themselves for worst-case scenarios, with MDA cooperation-By Diana Bletter-Today, 7:53 pm-AUG 5,24

Across Israel, hospitals are on heightened alert, bracing for a war with Iran and Hezbollah that could see mass casualty events.Health Minister Uriel Buso convened a series of medical readiness assessments with hospital directors and health maintenance organization executives last week following the double assassinations of Hamas head Ismail Haniyeh in Teheran and Hezbollah military head Fuad Shukr in Beirut.Buso discussed emergency preparedness, including information on safe areas, emergency supplies, cyber defense, mental healthcare, and ways to immediately raise readiness levels. He directed all personnel to check medical equipment inventory to guarantee “operational continuity,” adding that “the healthcare system has been operating in emergency mode since October 7.”MDA-Magen David Adom (MDA) held a three-day drill in northern Israel last week that simulated a missile strike on a building populated by dozens of people. The MDA reinforcement unit was mobilized along with regular MDA teams practicing a “blackout scenario” focusing on satellite resources. The drill simulated treatment for casualties, and the use of special technological and logistical tools, including dedicated vehicles.Part of the drill involved MDA’s blood services, focusing on emergency blood donations in the event of infrastructure shortages.MDA chief of staff Uri Shacham said that the organization would utilize its fleet of about 600 medicycles — medically equipped motorcycles and motor scooters — to deliver blood from MDA’s blood vault, which is protected against chemical, missile, and cyber attacks, to Israeli hospitals. If roads are destroyed, Shacham said MDA has all-terrain vehicles, known as Unimogs, that can travel off-road to reach their destinations.“The drill was successful, preparing us for a total communications blackout,” said Eli Bin, director general of MDA.Central Israel hospitals-At medical centers throughout the country, there is a sense of increased readiness. At Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, a spokesperson said that 350 hospital beds are ready in the recently expanded fortified underground complex. The 5,000 square meter complex on two floors of an underground parking lot includes intensive care units, surgery departments, orthopedics, internal medicine departments, and a dialysis unit.“The complex is ready for full operation at short notice,” said a hospital spokesperson. The emergency department is fully fortified, including the trauma room and blood bank, with a total of about 100 treatment stations.A spokesperson at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center said the hospital “is accustomed to providing immediate medical response in emergency events.”The staff has undergone “training, drills, and of course, intensive actual work” since the beginning of the war and has provided medical care to over 1,000 people who have been wounded. In the first months of the war, the hospital established two underground treatment complexes in Hadassah Ein Kerem and Hadassah Mount Scopus, to provide a medical treatment solution for hundreds of patients that would continue without interruption during an emergency or a threat to Jerusalem.Like many other hospitals, Sheba Medical Center has an emergency backup generator to keep the hospital functioning, along with “people’s monitors and heart pacemakers.”“We prepare and drill all the time, throughout the year,” said a Sheba hospital spokesperson. “We are on 24/7 alert but there’s nothing out of the ordinary.”Sheba has seen “four or five soldiers at a time going into the trauma center and the emergency room since October 7,” the spokesperson said. “As the largest hospital in Israel, we are always ready for a mass casualty event.”Rambam Medical Center-At Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, a spokesperson said that the hospital has not canceled vacations, surgeries, or clinic appointments.Yet the underground floor at the hospital is ready with 1,200 beds. If necessary, 700 patients from the aboveground hospital can be moved to the underground hospital within 6 to 8 hours. The hospital can also provide an additional 2,200 beds in the fortified area.In April, the hospital conducted a drill of a mass casualty event from a missile hitting an apartment building. The drill was conducted in cooperation with the IDF Home Front Command and MDA emergency response services. The two northernmost hospitals.Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war against the Hamas terror group there. So far, the skirmishes have resulted in 25 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 18 IDF soldiers and reservists. In Nahariya, six miles from the Lebanese border, Galilee Medical Center director Prof. Masad Barhoum said that since October 7, his hospital has been “preparing for the Third Lebanon War.”The almost daily attacks have given medical personnel at his hospital as well as Ziv Medical Center in Safed a grim, limited glimpse into what it might be like during a full-scale war.During the 2006 Lebanon War, Hezbollah fired close to 4,000 rockets into Israel, resulting in the deaths of 49 Israeli civilians and 121 IDF soldiers; some Hezbollah rockets damaged Galilee Medical Center’s fourth-floor ophthalmology ward.Within days of October 7, even before the Health Ministry and the IDF Homefront Command issued directives for the hospitals, the hospital staff moved babies in the neonatal intensive care unit down to the hospital’s fortified underground facility. Other units followed. So far, the hospital has treated about 1,500 wounded, most of them soldiers. In Safed, Ziv Medical Center director Prof. Salman Zarka said the facility has been combining care for residents of the north along with taking care of war casualties. Since October 7, the hospital has taken in more than 290 wounded civilians and soldiers. The hospital treated eight of the 12 children wounded in the Hezbollah attack on Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights.Zarka said that the hospital has stockpiled food, medication, and oxygen to last for several days “in case we become a ‘separate island.’”In the south, Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, the closest hospital to the border with Gaza, has treated more than 3,000 wounded soldiers and civilians since the war began on October 7.“There hasn’t been any change in readiness,” said a hospital spokesperson. “We have been on full alert since the beginning of the war.”

UN says 9 UNRWA employees ‘may have been involved’ in Oct 7 attack, have been fired-Israeli ambassador to UN calls investigation a ‘disgrace,’ alleges that ‘thousands’ of UNRWA employees are ‘involved to various degrees in Hamas’s terror activities’-By Jeremy Sharon-and Jacob Magid-Today, 11:21 pm-AUG 5,24

The United Nations announced on Monday night that nine employees of the UNRWA agency for Palestinian refugees “may have been involved” in Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel and will be fired from the organization. The Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), an independent body of the United Nations Secretariat, said in a terse press release that it had completed its investigation into 19 UNRWA staff members alleged by Israel to have taken part in the October 7 atrocities and concluded that in nine cases, the evidence obtained by the organization “indicated that the UNRWA staff members may have been involved in the armed attacks of 7 October 2023.”Added the OIOS, “The employment of these individuals will be terminated in the interests of the Agency.”In nine other cases, the OIOS claimed that the evidence of involvement was insufficient, and in one case, it said there was no evidence. In response, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan branded the OIOS investigation “a disgrace,” noting that it had focused only on 19 UNRWA employees, despite Israel having provided the UN with “detailed information” about 100 UNRWA employees that Erdan said were Hamas members.A probe was launched by UNRWA in January into allegations that seven staff members had participated in the October 7 attack, and an additional probe into another 12 employees was initiated in March. On January 26, UNRWA said it had fired an unspecified number of staffers, after Israeli authorities provided information that pointed to their active participation in the October 7 terror onslaught. The nine employees that UNRWA said on Monday had been dismissed included staff members fired back in January.“The UN investigation, which focused solely on 19 UNRWA employees, is a disgrace!” said Erdan following the UN announcement on Monday.“It is too little, too late – ignoring thousands of agency employees involved to various degrees in Hamas’s terror activities,” he continued.“Israel provided the UN with detailed information regarding over 100 UNRWA employees who were direct members of the terrorist organization Hamas,” he said. “Despite Israel’s extensive cooperation with, and provision of information to, the UN, its investigation’s conclusions are yet another disgrace.”In February, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant alleged that at least 12 of UNRWA’s employees were directly involved in the October 7 atrocities, another 30 assisted or facilitated those crimes, and as much as 12 percent of the organization’s staff are affiliated with terror organizations. The accusations led numerous countries to suspend their funding to the organization, although many have since renewed it, citing the difficult humanitarian situation in the Strip. In April, a review of UNRWA by an independent panel said Israel had yet to provide supporting evidence for its claims that a significant number of agency staff were members of terrorist organizations and argued that UNRWA had “robust” policies in place to ensure staff neutrality.Israel’s Foreign Ministry rejected that review as well, stating that Hamas’s penetration of the UN agency was so deep that “it is impossible to say where UNRWA ends and Hamas begins.”“If more than 2,135 UNRWA employees are members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and 1/5 of the principals of UNRWA schools are Hamas activists, the problem with UNRWA-Gaza is not a problem of a few bad apples,” the ministry said in a statement, rejecting the review’s conclusions. “It is a poisoned and rotten tree whose roots are Hamas.”Israel and pro-Israel lobbying groups have for years accused UNRWA staff of antisemitism and the glorification of terrorism, particularly within UNRWA’s extensive education system.Several past reports by such organizations have found that UNRWA schools and teachers continue to teach hatred of Jews and glorify terrorism, including a 2022 report by the IMPACT-SE organization that UNRWA textbooks continue to contain incitement, and a 2023 report by the same organization along with the UN Watch group citing dozens of examples of social media posts by UNRWA employees that “glorify terrorism, encourage martyrdom, demonize Israelis and incite antisemitism.”

Hamas’s central Gaza battalions still effective, believed to hold hostages – report-Eight battalions across Gaza still combat-ready as of July 1, CNN analysis claims; IDF rejects report, says most of terror group’s units dismantled-By ToI Staff and Emanuel Fabian-Today, 9:38 pm-AUG 5,24

The Israeli military has not adequately “dealt” with Hamas battalions in the central Gaza strip, due to concerns that the terror group is holding many Israeli hostages there, according to Israeli sources quoted in a report Monday, which the Israeli military rejected. The CNN report, based in part on analyses by the American Enterprise Institute’s Critical Threats Project and the Institute for the Study of War using data running up to July 1, found that eight of the 24 Hamas battalions in the enclave were still “combat effective,” or able to carry out missions against Israeli troops.A further 13 battalions were “degraded,” but still partly operational, the report found, and only three were totally “combat ineffective.”Responding to a query about the report, the Israel Defense Forces rejected its conclusions, saying “the claims made in the article contradict the achievements of the forces on the ground, and create a false representation of the situation of Hamas in Gaza.”“From the intelligence and findings on the ground, most of the Hamas brigades have been dismantled. It is estimated that most of the battalions are at a low level of competency and can no longer function as a military framework,” the IDF said.“The commanders of the IDF and its troops work day and night to achieve the goals of the war and reach unprecedented achievements in the fight against the Hamas terror organization,” the military added.According to the CNN report, some seven Hamas battalions have managed to reconstitute at least once since being severely degraded earlier in the war, either by merging severely degraded cells into new, combat-effective forces, or by recruiting new fighters. The military has acknowledged returning in some instances to areas in Gaza that its forces had previously evacuated after identifying Hamas forces regrouping there.Israeli defense officials have said this was part of the military’s strategy from the beginning of the ground operation in the Strip, saying it would shift from a large-scale intensive offensive to intelligence-based pinpoint raids after several months in each part of Gaza.“[Hamas] recruitment started three or four months ago, and they got a few thousand. I don’t know exactly how many,” one retired high-ranking Israeli officer told CNN.The officer noted, however, that “Hamas’s biggest difficulty is not at the level of soldiers, but at the level of commanders, some [of] whom are not easy to replace.”The battalions that have suffered the least damage, according to the CNN report, are those in central Gaza.Israel believes these forces are holding many of those taken captive on October 7, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists burst into southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, starting the ongoing war.It is believed that 111 captives abducted on October 7, including the bodies of 39 confirmed dead by the IDF, remain in the enclave. In June, four hostages were rescued in a daring daytime raid in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp. The hostages were held in the homes of Hamas-affiliated families, believed to have been paid by the terror group.Negotiations for the return of the remaining hostages, in exchange for a ceasefire and prisoner release, are ongoing.Monday’s CNN report challenged the Israeli military strategy of repeated raids in areas where Hamas capability has been degraded, and suggested that the absence of a new government to replace the terror group has made victory over Hamas impossible to accomplish.“Hamas’s presence in northern Gaza is stronger than you can imagine,” a Palestinian source told CNN. “They’re among civilians. It helps them rebuild their forces.” Another Palestinian source reported seeing a Hamas-run makeshift jail in Gaza City.A high-ranking Israeli officer, quoted anonymously because he was not authorized to speak, told CNN that Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza is like “a marathon runner who doesn’t know where the stadium is. You run and you don’t know if you’re headed in the right direction.“Everywhere Hamas rears its head, we will enter. Can this ping pong stay forever? No. Our society is not built for this. And neither is the international community,” the officer said.“If the Hamas battalions were largely destroyed, Israeli forces wouldn’t still be fighting,” retired United States Army Col. Peter Mansoor told CNN, adding, “The ability of Hamas to reconstitute its fighting forces is undiminished.“The fact that they’re still in Gaza, still trying to rout out elements of the Hamas battalions shows me that Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu is wrong” when he says that victory is in sight, Mansoor said. The retired colonel helped to oversee the US’s surge of 30,000 troops into Iraq in 2007, to fight an insurgency there in the wake of the American invasion in 2003.Hamas has been described by the IDF as in “survival mode” in recent months, and not the same military organization as it was before October 7. Israeli assessments claim that Hamas is suffering from severe morale issues as the fighting goes on, and thousands are fleeing army operations and choosing not to fight. The IDF has said that just over half of Hamas’s military wing leadership in Gaza has been confirmed killed so far during the fighting. Those who remain include the commanders of the Rafah and Gaza City brigades, and the heads of the terror group’s intelligence, operations, manufacturing, and combat enforcement divisions.Hamas has also been running into weapon shortages, according to Israeli assessments. The IDF recently recovered a document listing the current inventory of the Shejaiya Battalion in Gaza City, according to which it had lost more than two-thirds of its members, and was running low on RPGs, assault rifles, and explosives.Last month, a major Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza killed Mohammad Deif, the commander of Hamas’s military wing, according to the IDF, though Hamas has not confirmed his death. His deputy, Marwan Issa, was killed by Israel in March.

Inside story-Hostage talks on hold until after Iran response, replacement of Haniyeh — officials-Hamas expected to harden stances, but mediators still plan to try and advance negotiations, which were on verge of breakthrough before assassination, two sources tell ToI-By Jacob Magid-Today, 9:36 pm-AUG 5,24

DOHA, Qatar — The negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire-hostage release deal are on hold and will not pick up until after Iran retaliates for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and until after the terror group selects a replacement for the slain politburo chief, two officials familiar with the matter told The Times of Israel Monday. The Iranian response against Israel, which was allegedly behind Haniyeh’s killing, could happen as early as Monday night, while Hamas is expected to announce a new leader in the coming days, said two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.Qatari, Egyptian, and US mediators will then be able to resume efforts to negotiate a deal, though they believe it will be much more difficult following Haniyeh’s assassination, the officials said, adding that Hamas has not shown any interest in returning to the table in the interim. An Israeli negotiating team was in Cairo over the weekend, but that was largely for bilateral talks with Egypt over the IDF’s presence in the Philadelphi Corridor and the Rafah Crossing, one of the officials said, noting that Hamas was not part of the discussions, even indirectly, and that no progress was made either.Qatar also did not send representatives to the Saturday meeting in Cairo, as the focus was not on the hostage file, the officials said. While the mediators sought to separate the IDF’s presence along the Egyptian border from the hostage talks, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has included the issue among a series of new demands that the Israeli negotiating team formally presented on July 27, the officials said. The new conditions brought the talks to another impasse just days after the mediators managed to convince Hamas to back off its main demand for an up-front Israeli commitment for a permanent ceasefire.Netanyahu insists that he has not moved from the ceasefire proposal he authorized on May 27, though the text of the offer obtained by The Times of Israel indicates otherwise. The premier’s stance has frustrated the Biden administration, as wellas the Israeli security establishment, which feels that the proposal Hamas had most recently agreed to should be accepted, one of the officials confirmed. While the mediators viewed the latest Israeli response submitted in Rome on July 27 as a setback, follow-up meetings were still planned. But the July 31 assassination of Haniyeh turned the impasse into a “full-blown crisis,” one of the officials said.Hamas said it would hold internal deliberations to select an interim leader, with Haniyeh’s deputy Khalil Al-Hayya, his predecessor Khaled Mashal, and senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzook named as potential replacements.

Erdogan slams ‘digital fascism’ as Turkey said to ban Instagram over Haniyeh posts-Turkish president accuses social media of censoring ‘Palestinian martyrs’; Ankara holding talks with Meta-owned company as e-commerce losing millions daily since Aug. 2 shutdown-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 8:35 pm-AUG 5,24

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused social media platforms of “digital fascism” on Monday for allegedly censoring photographs of Palestinian “martyrs.”The Turkish leader’s comments came as Turkish officials were engaged in discussions with representatives of the social media platform, Instagram, to reinstate access to millions of its users in Turkey. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority barred access to Instagram on August 2 without providing a reason. Government officials said the ban was imposed because Instagram failed to abide by Turkish regulations.Several media reports said, however, that the action was in response to Instagram removing posts by Turkish users that expressed condolences over the killing of the Hamas terror group’s leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday, July 31.The Instagram shutdown was the latest instance of a clampdown on websites in Turkey, which has a track record of censoring social media and other online platforms.“They cannot even tolerate photographs of Palestinian martyrs and immediately ban them,” Erdogan said in a speech in Ankara on Monday. “We are confronted with a digital fascism that is disguised as freedom.”“They are resorting to every means to hide Israel’s cruelty and muzzle the Palestinian people’s voices. Especially social media companies have literally become militants,” he said.Erdogan, who was speaking at an event on human rights education hosted by his Islamist AKP political party, went on to state that social media websites were allegedly allowing all kinds of propaganda by groups considered terrorists in Turkey.“We have tried to establish a line of dialogue through our relevant institutions. However, we have not yet been able to achieve the desired cooperation,” Erdogan said.Turkey’s transportation and infrastructure minister, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, said Turkish authorities met with representatives of Instagram last week and were holding a fresh round of talks on Monday.Foreign Minister Israel Katz wrote on social media on August 2 that the decision to block Instagram demonstrated how Erdogan “is turning Turkey into a dictatorship just because of his support for the murderers and rapists of Hamas, against the stance of the entire free world.”At the end of his post, Katz tagged Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the leading opposition figure to Erdogan. İmamoğlu’s secularist CHP party scored a stunning victory against Erdogan’s AKP in Turkey’s March 31 municipal elections.Unlike its Western allies, Turkey does not consider Hamas a terror organization. A strong critic of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, Erdogan, who met with Haniyeh in Istanbul in April, has described Hamas as a liberation movement, and repeatedly compared Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler. The Turkish strongman appeared to threaten to invade Israel last week, saying at a meeting of his political party that Turkey must be “very strong so that Israel can’t do these things to the Palestinians.” In early May, Erdogan halted his country’s robust trade ties with Israel.Soon after the war in Gaza began, Turkey, a NATO member, began blocking any cooperation between NATO and Israel, which holds partner status in the military alliance, Reuters reported last week. The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, when thousands of terrorists stormed southern Israel to kill nearly 1,200 people and take 251 hostages.Instagram has more than 57 million users in Turkey, a nation of 85 million people, according to the We Are Social media company. The Electronic Commerce Operators’ Association estimates that the Meta-owned app and other social media platforms generate about 930 million Turkish lira ($27 million) worth of e-commerce per day.

 THE MIDEAST REALLY HEATS UP.

NUCLEAR WEAPONS WILL BE USED.

JESUS SHED HIS BLOOD FOR US THAT WE CAN BE SAVED FOREVER.AND DURING WW3 PEOPLES BLOOD WILL BE SHED AS A JUDGEMENT FOR HATING HIM AND ISRAEL.GOD IS NOT MOCKED.

ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2  I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3  I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

PSALMS 97:3
3 A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.

EZEKIEL 5:15-17
15  So it shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment unto the (ARAB/MUSLIM) nations that are round about thee,(ISRAEL) when I shall execute judgments in thee in anger and in fury and in furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it.
16  When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread:
17  So will I send upon you famine and evil beasts,(WHEN RUSSIA/MUSLIMS GET DEFEATED THIER BODIES GET EATEN BY BIRDS,ANIMALS IN ISRAEL MIGRATION SEASON) and they shall bereave thee; and pestilence and blood shall pass through thee;(NUKES) and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it.

REVELATION 14:18-20
18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
20 And the winepress was trodden without the city,(JERUSALEM) and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.(200 MILES) (THE SIZE OF ISRAEL)

ISAIAH 66:15-18
15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire,(NUKES) and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.
17 They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD.
18 For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.

ISAIAH 26:21
21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity:(GOD/ISRAEL HATE AND BRAKING OF HIS COMMANDMENTS) the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.(WW3,1/2 earths population die - 3 BILLION).

ISAIAH 13:6-13 KJV
6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:(FROM FRIGHT)
8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

ISAIAH 24:17-23 KJV
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)(THIS IS AN ATOMIC BOMB EFFECT)

EZEKIEL 20:47
47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

ZEPHANIAH 1:18
18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

MALACHI 4:1
1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven;(FROM ATOMIC BOMBS) and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

REVELATION 8:7
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates;(WERE WW3 STARTS IN IRAQ OR SYRIA OR TURKEY) and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.
13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon,(SATAN) and out of the mouth of the beast,(WORLD DICTATOR) and out of the mouth of the false prophet.(FALSE POPE)
14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.(WERE 2 BILLION DIE FROM NUKE WAR)
15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse:(CHLORES GREEN) and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth,(2 BILLION) to kill with sword,(WEAPONS) and with hunger,(FAMINE) and with death,(INCURABLE DISEASES) and with the beasts of the earth.(ANIMAL TO HUMAN DISEASE).

EZEKIEL 32:18-29 (NOTICE ALL THE COUNTRIES LAND PROMISED ISRAEL BY GOD ARE IN THE JORDAN VALLEY BURIED)
18 “Son of man, wail for the multitudes of Egypt, and consign her and the daughters of the mighty nations to the depths of the earth with those who descend to the Pit:
19 Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be placed with the uncircumcised! (IN HELL FIRES)
20 They will fall among those slain by the sword. The sword is appointed! Let them drag her away along with all her multitudes.
21 Mighty chiefs will speak from the midst of Sheol about Egypt and her allies: ‘They have come down and lie with the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword.’
22 Assyria (SYRIA) is there with her whole company; her graves are all around her. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword.
23 Her graves are set in the depths of the Pit, and her company is all around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword—those who once spread terror in the land of the living.
24 Elam (IRAN) is there with all her multitudes around her grave. All of them are slain, fallen by the sword—those who went down uncircumcised to the earth below, who once spread their terror in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit.
25 Among the slain they prepare a resting place for Elam with all her hordes, with her graves all around her. All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword, although their terror was once spread in the land of the living. They bear their disgrace with those who descend to the Pit. They are placed among the slain.
26 Meshech and Tubal (RUSSIA) are there with all their multitudes, with their graves all around them. All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword, because they spread their terror in the land of the living.
27 They do not lie down with the fallen warriors of old, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were placed under their heads, whose shields rested on their bones, although the terror of the mighty was once in the land of the living.
28 But you too will be shattered and lie down among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword.
29 Edom (JORDAN) is there, and all her kings and princes, who despite their might are laid among those slain by the sword. They lie down with the uncircumcised, with those who descend to the Pit.THIS IS RIGHT FROM 93:

SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come." The angel said, "The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The angel said: "This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those countries."The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

IDF document shared with northern mayors sets out Hezbollah war scenarios-Security establishment sees potentially unprecedented rocket fire, major evacuations, power outages, water supply issues, disrupted telecom service and brief internet disruptions-By Shalom Yerushalmi Today, 5:05 pm-AUG 4,24

A document by the Israel Defense Forces detailing the “Updated Scenario” in the event of an all-out war with Hezbollah was recently shared with northern mayors, The Times of Israel has learned. The document was shared as Israel braces for a threatened response by Iran and Hezbollah to the killings last week of Hezbollah’s military commander Fuad Shukr in an Israeli strike in Beirut and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a blast in Tehran for which Israel has not claimed responsibility. In the event of war with Hezbollah, the document envisages a potential three-day power outage in some cities; breakdowns in water supply that could last days; a disconnection of landlines for up to eight hours and cellphone communications for up to 24 hours; and brief local disruptions to radio and internet. Some 40% of the nation’s workforce may be unable to work for the duration of the conflict, and service providers from outside affected areas may become unavailable throughout, according to the document. The security establishment, The Times of Israel has learned, assesses that Israel could face an unprecedented attack with hundreds of rockets, carrying warheads ranging from payloads of 50 kilograms — like the one that hit Majdal Shams, killing 12 children at a soccer field — to 10 times that.Hezbollah would be expected to prioritize targeting IDF facilities, then infrastructure, and then civilian targets, though that could change. It would be expected to aim at targets far to the south of Haifa, including Tel Aviv, possibly forcing the evacuation of large numbers of people to Jerusalem and to the south. The evacuees would be housed in hotels, some of which are already housing numerous displaced Israelis from the north. If hotels in the Jerusalem area are full up, the evacuees would be accommodated in schools in the city.Plans are being made for tent cities in the south, including in areas such as Timna, north of Eilat, and Eshkol Park in the Negev. The model for these is similar to that of the tents set up by Arcadi Gaydamak on Nitzanim Beach in 2006, for citizens evacuated from the north during the Second Lebanon War, and in 2007 at Yarkon Park for Sderot residents.According to senior IDF sources, existing protective measures — notably including safe rooms — are extremely effective against missiles, including those of Hezbollah. Furthermore, according to the sources, the Home Front Command and local authorities are properly prepared for the scenario. At the same time, “the reality for the other side will be far worse, to put it mildly,” one security official told The Times of Israel. In the event of a major attack from the north, cities such as Sderot, Ofakim and Netivot would ironically become relatively safe places as regards Hezbollah missile strikes; cities in the south that were targeted in October 2023 would thus become cities of refuge in August 2024.Yair Maayan, mayor of the southern city of Arad, last week encouraged residents of the north to consider evacuating to his quiet city, “and anybody who wants to, can also stay.”

Report: Terror groups trying to use Arab Israeli crime gangs to carry out attacks-Ministers told that weapons pilfered from Gaza war are making their way into Arab community and posing a serious threat to national security-By ToI Staff Today, 4:54 pm-AUG 4,24

Security officials have warned government ministers that terror groups are trying to utilize crime organizations in Israel’s Arab community in order to carry out nationalistic attacks in the Jewish state, casting the proliferation of illegal weapons as a tangible threat to national security, the Haaretz daily reported Sunday.Citing unnamed sources, the outlet said terror groups from abroad have already attempted to direct such attacks, often without the local crime groups knowing they were acting on the terrorists’ behalf. The report did not give any specific details of such incidents.Haaretz said the security officials who briefed ministers highlighted the ongoing failure to rein in an unprecedented wave of violent crime in the Arab community, coupled with wartime proliferation and increasing availability of illegal weapons in the community. Among those who attended the meetings was National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who is responsible for the Israel Police.“The crime organizations are a strategic threat to national security,” ministers were told. “The state is near the point of no return in its ability to deal with the phenomenon.”“We see terror entities that are ‘riding’ on the platform that crime creates,” a senior security official told the newspaper. The official said that for Arab citizens, the ruling authority is not the government but crime groups. “This is a real danger.”There are believed to be hundreds of thousands of weapons in the Arab community, including many considered of high quality, and prices are dropping due to an influx made available by the ongoing war against the Palestinian terror group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The war, triggered by the Hamas-led October 7 attack on Israel that killed some 1,200 people, has seen massive army reserve call-ups amid operations in Gaza involving tens of thousands of combat troops.According to the report, enforcement services have in recent months noticed a steady leak of weapons from IDF combat units to crime groups, including anti-tank weapons and even advanced shoulder-launched anti-tank systems such as the locally produced Matador.“The market is overflowing because of the war,” a senior law enforcement official told Haaretz. The low prices and easy availability of war materials have brought about an increased use of more lethal weaponry in the criminal world.“Instead of a stun grenade they are now tossing fragmentation grenades, and whole militias have weapons,” the official said.Due to the transfer of advanced weapons to the criminal world, the Shin Bet security agency is in favor of legislation to set stiff minimum sentences for those caught in possession of illegal weapons, Haaretz said, with one senior official in the agency proposing eight to ten years in prison. The official reportedly hoped that the threat of a lengthy time behind bars would act as a deterrent or even encourage some to surrender the stolen weapons they are holding. The proposal has been passed to the Justice Ministry for preparation as a bill and some ministers have reportedly already said they would back it.In 2021 the law was changed to require courts to hand down a sentence of at least a quarter of the maximum for weapons offenses with the alteration being made at the time due to a sharp rise in violent crime in the Arab community. The warning to ministers came amid a spike in violent crime in the Arab community that saw 26 homicides in July alone, and 134 deaths since the beginning of the year. By comparison, there were 138 homicides in the Arab community during the whole of 2023.A recent meeting of the Ministerial Committee for Arab Community Affairs was told that organized crime groups are operating a form of “shadow government” in the Arab community including a gray market and their own brand of judicial procedures and punishments, Haaretz reported.

Netanyahu warns Iran: We are ready, we’ll exact a heavy price for any aggression-PM tells cabinet Israel striking hard against Iranian’s ‘axis of evil,’ is prepared for any offensive or defensive scenario; Gallant: Israel is ‘prepared very strongly’ for any attack-By ToI Staff Today, 4:36 pm-AUG 4,24

As Israel waits for an expected strike by Iran, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday declared that the country is ready for anything and will hit back hard if attacked.“We are prepared for any scenario – both offensively and defensively,” Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem, according to a statement from his office.Iran has threatened to respond after Hamas terror group leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on Wednesday, a day after senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed in Beirut.Israel has claimed responsibility for killing Shukr, but has not officially commented on Haniyeh, whose death has been blamed on the Jewish state by Hamas, Iran, and their allies. Israel has pledged to kill the Hamas masterminds behind the terror group’s devastating October 7 attack, which sparked the war in Gaza.“The State of Israel is in a multi-front war against Iran’s axis of evil,” Netanyahu said. “We are striking every one of its arms with great force.”“I reiterate and tell our enemies: We will respond and we will exact a heavy price for any act of aggression against us, from whatever quarter,” Netanyahu declared.Israel’s security establishment is on high alert for an Iranian response that it reportedly anticipates could come on multiple fronts.Hours after Netanyahu’s comments, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel is “prepared very strongly” and ready to respond quickly to any attack.“We are prepared very strongly in defense, on land, and in the air, and we are ready to move quickly to attack or to respond,” he said during a visit to the IDF’s Ground Technological Division. “We will exact a price from the enemy, as we have been doing in recent days. If it dares to attack us, it will pay a heavy price.”During the cabinet meeting, Netanyahu also pushed back against media reports over his handling of the ongoing hostage crisis in the Gaza Strip amid the war there against the Palestinian terror group Hamas. War erupted on October 7 when Hamas led a devastating attack on Israel during which terrorists killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages to Gaza. Israel responded with an offensive to destroy Hamas and free the hostages, of whom 111 remain in captivity, 39 of whom the IDF has confirmed are dead. The US has helped mediate talks for a ceasefire and hostage release but on Saturday Channel 12 reported that US President Joe Biden harshly criticized Netanyahu over hostage talks. Those talks have been ongoing for many months without results, and Biden has previously opined that Netanyahu has been intentionally stalling for internal political reasons.Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that Biden had said during the call that the Wednesday assassination of Haniyeh in Iran was “poorly timed,” coming “right at what the Americans hoped would be the endgame” of talks for a ceasefire and hostage release deal.“I am prepared to go very far to release all of our hostages while maintaining the security of Israel,” Netanyahu told ministers at the Sunday cabinet meeting. “Our commitment stands in complete contrast to the leaks and mendacious briefings on the issue of our hostages.”“These briefings harm the negotiations and, to my great regret, they also mislead the hostages’ dear families. They create a false impression that Hamas has agreed to a deal, while the government of Israel is opposed to it.”“The complete opposite is true,” he said. “The simple truth is, that as of now Hamas has not agreed to the most basic conditions of the outline.”The day after the Hamas October 7 attack, Iran-backed Hezbollah began attacking along Israel’s northern border saying it was acting in support of Gaza. Amid near-daily attacks by Hezbollah, the IDF has struck back amid concerns that the conflict could boil over into another front. The killing of Haniyeh and Shukr and vows of revenge by Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas have pushed those concerns even higher.Iran has already launched a direct attack on Israel in April following the killing of two senior Iranian generals in a strike on Damascus that Tehran blamed on Israel. The Iranian attack was thwarted by Israeli air defense in cooperation with US-coordinated regional forces. The US is reportedly trying to again build the alliance to fend off the expected Iranian attack.

IDF  finds tunnel large enough for vehicles to drive through in Gaza-Egypt border area-At least 5 rockets launched from Gaza, triggering sirens near Ashdod and sparking blaze; military says it targeted Hamas cells operating out of 2 schools, Palestinians say 25 killed-By Emanuel Fabian,ToI Staff and Reuters Today, 4:13 pm-AUG 4,24

The army has uncovered an unusually large tunnel on the Gaza-Egypt border area, big enough for vehicles to pass through, the Israel Defense Force said Sunday.According to the military, the tunnel was around three meters (10 feet) tall.It was located along the so-called Philadelphi Route last week, as part of efforts to uncover all of Hamas’s arms-smuggling routes in the area. The tunnel was being investigated by combat engineers before it was to be demolished, the military said.Dozens of tunnels have been found along the Philadelphi corridor, including at least 25 that crossed into Egypt. The tunnel’s discovery came amid continued fighting in Gaza’s south and center.A barrage of at least five rockets was fired from the southern Gaza Strip, triggering sirens in a number of towns near Ashdod for the first time in months. Some of the rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome and some impacted open areas. The IDF said one of the rockets hit the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council. The Fire and Rescue Service said it was working to put out a fire sparked by a rocket that hit near the southern town of Bitzaron. There were no injuries in the attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the long-range attack.IDF strikes-Also Sunday, the army announced that a recent drone strike in central Gaza’s Nuseirat had killed Ismail Nofal, who participated in Hamas’s October 7 onslaught and was reportedly the son of Ayman Nofal, the former commander of Hamas’s Central Gaza Brigade, whom Israel killed in October.According to the army, the younger Nofal was a Hamas terrorist who participated in the devastating October 7 attack and was also involved in rocket fire on Israel amid the war.Meanwhile, a group of Hamas members operating out of two schools in Gaza City were struck by Israeli fighter jets on Sunday afternoon, the IDF said.According to the military, Hamas embedded command and control rooms within the Hassan Salama and Nasr schools in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighbor hood. The schools were used by the Hamas operatives as a hideout and as a command room where attacks on IDF troops and Israel were planned and carried out, the military said.To mitigate harm to civilians in the strike, the IDF said it carried out “many steps,” including using precision munitions, aerial surveillance, and other intelligence.“The Hamas terror organization systematically violates international law, brutally exploiting civilian institutions and the population as a human shield for terror activity,” the military added. In recent months, dozens of airstrikes have been carried out against Hamas sites embedded within schools and other sites used as shelters for civilians, according to the IDF.Gaza’s Hamas-run civil defense agency said the strikes killed at least 25 people.“The bodies of 25 martyrs, mostly children and women, and 50 other wounded, also mostly children and women, were taken to Baptist hospital after an Israeli strike targeted Hassan Salameh and Al-Nasr schools in Gaza City,” agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP.The toll could not be verified.A separate overnight Israeli strike killed at least five people in a tent area inside the Al-Aqsa Hospital compound, in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah, the Strip’s Hamas-run health ministry said. The IDF said it struck a gunman in Deir al-Balah who “conducted terror activities” and that secondary explosions were identified, indicating weapons were present in the area.Elsewhere in Deir el-Balah, three Palestinians were killed Sunday when an Israeli missile struck a house, while eight other people were killed inside their home in Jabaliya camp in northern Gaza City and three inside a car in separate Israeli strikes, Reuters reported.More than 50 other strikes were carried out in Gaza over the past day, targeting cells of gunmen, buildings used by terror groups, observation posts, and other infrastructure, according to the military. The war in Gaza was sparked when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists stormed southern Israel on October 7 to kill nearly 1,200 people and take 251 hostages. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 39,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far. The toll, which cannot be independently verified, does not distinguish between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed about 15,000 combatants in battle, in addition to some 1,000 terrorists killed inside Israel during the October 7 attack.

Iran still deciding on extent, timing of reprisals-Iran said to dismiss US, Arab calls for restraint — even if it sparks war-US warns Iranian attack will hamper relations with West; Israel bracing for multi-day assault; Netanyahu consulting with defense chiefs, considering ‘preventative measures’By ToI Staff Today, 9:51 pm-AUG 4,24

Iran has rejected attempts by the US and Arab nations to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, as Israel braces for an attack from the Islamic Republic and the Lebanese Iran-supported Hezbollah, saying they would strike the Jewish state even if it means war, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated since Wednesday, when Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran in an attack Iran blamed on Israel, vowing to retaliate.According to the Wall Street Journal report, foreign ministers from Jordan and Lebanon traveled to Iran in an attempt to diffuse the situation, but Iran told the Arab diplomats that it was set on striking back against Israel and “it didn’t care if the response triggered a war.”Israel is preparing for the possibility of an Iranian-led attack that would include missiles being fired at Israel over the course of multiple days, according to a Sunday NBC report, citing an unnamed Israeli official.Israel has said repeatedly that any action against it would be met with retaliation, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeating this while telling the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday that “the State of Israel is in a multi-front war against Iran’s axis of evil.”Netanyahu was meeting with his security chiefs on Sunday evening. Earlier, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant held a similar consultation with senior military and defense officials. The Defense Ministry said the meeting was focused on “the security developments, and the various options to exact a price for attempted attacks from Iran and its proxies.”Israel does not yet have a “definitive picture” of the attacks it will be facing, Channel 12 reported. The TV news report also said Israel’s security establishment was considering the possibility of “preventive actions or attacks” Israel could initiate, “including in Lebanon or perhaps in other places as necessitated.”Earlier Sunday, when asked why Israel was not taking pre-emptive actions, IDF Spokesman Daniel Hagari said, “We are watching our enemies on all fronts and certainly Hezbollah in Lebanon. We have very wide-ranging plans, we have a high readiness to act. Any instruction we get from the political echelon, we will carry out immediately.”The TV report said that the US is also not certain what to expect from Iran and Hezbollah, noting that the Iranians have likely not made a clear decision yet, nor finished coordinating with their proxies. Channel 12 said that a US-led international coalition to thwart any attacks has taken shape, and will be directed from CENTCOM in Qatar.Asked by numerous countries how it will respond to such attacks, and whether it is heading for war, Israel has been saying “very ambiguously” that it is “keeping all its options open,” the report said. That ambiguous response is one of the reasons why many countries are urging their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately, the report said.It added that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is considering visiting the region in the very near future, in light of US concern over a potential regional conflagration.Meanwhile, the WSJ report noted, the US asked European nations to urge Iran to de-escalate and warned that any offensive action on the Islamic Regime’s part would greatly harm new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s efforts to develop ties with the West. The US’s message also said that it was urging Israel to de-escalate. Nonetheless, the US has scrambled to revive a regional coalition that, in April, succeeded in almost entirely thwarting an unprecedented Iranian attack on Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles.Haniyeh was killed in Tehran early on Wednesday morning, hours after an Israeli airstrike killed Hezbollah’s military chief, Fuad Shukr, near Beirut. Israel took responsibility for Shukr’s killing, but has not commented on Haniyeh’s death, other than to say that the country had not carried out any other airstrikes in the Middle East that night.Hezbollah vowed to retaliate for Shukr’s killing, and regardless of Israel not taking responsibility for Haniyeh’s death, Iran said it would strike at Israel in response. As a result, the IDF was on high alert over the weekend and remained so as the new week began. On April 13, Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel, the vast majority of which were intercepted by a coalition of Israel’s allies and other nations in the region. While 99 percent of the projectiles were downed in that attack and only one person was injured, Israeli officials are said to assess that this time around there may be damage and more casualties. The region has been in turmoil since October 7, when Hamas launched an unprecedented cross-border attack on Israel in which terrorists murdered some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 hostages.Israel responded with a ground invasion in Gaza with the proclaimed objectives of dismantling Hamas and getting the hostages back. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 39,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 15,000 combatants in battle and some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 attack.Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip stands at 331.Meanwhile, since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza during the war there. So far, the skirmishes have resulted in 25 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 18 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.Hezbollah has named 387 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. In Lebanon, another 69 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have been killed.

Report: Netanyahu decides not to seek normalization with Saudis before US election-Israel’s Channel 12 suggests PM is waiting to see who is elected to White House this fall before deciding on approach to Riyadh-By ToI Staff Today, 11:34 pm-AUG 4,24

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly decided not to pursue potential normalization with Saudi Arabia before the US presidential election in November.According to a report Sunday on Channel 12 news, Netanyahu made the decision because of the fast-moving US political developments, with the consideration that it might be worth waiting to see whether Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump is returned to the White House in the upcoming vote. The unsourced TV report suggested that the decision has major implications, including for talks toward a possible hostage-ceasefire deal, since potential normalization would have constituted a “safety net” for Netanyahu: If his right-wing coalition were to collapse during disagreements over a Gaza deal, normalization with Saudi Arabia would have given him an election-boosting trump card and the opportunity to secure a historic legacy. The report comes barely a week after an Israeli official told reporters during a briefing in Washington that a normalization agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia was still possible before the November presidential election, and that Netanyahu discussed the matter with US President Joe Biden during their White House meeting.Just before Netanyahu left for Washington, Biden announced that he would no longer be seeking reelection in November, and since then, current Vice President Kamala Harris has clinched the Democratic nomination, gearing up for a fierce battle against Trump for the White House.Normalization efforts between Israel and Saudi Arabia have been floated repeatedly in the years since the 2020 US-brokered Abraham Accords, when Israel established diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco. Trump-era officials have often claimed that relations between Jerusalem and Riyadh would have since been cemented had Trump been reelected later that year.Under the Biden administration, however, significant steps were taken toward securing such a deal, and the move was said to be on the brink of fruition just before the October 7 Hamas onslaught, which triggered the ongoing Israeli war on Hamas in Gaza, with two Israeli ministers even visiting Saudi Arabia just days before the terror group’s massacre in southern Israel.Even in the months since, however, US officials indicated that the Saudis were still open to moving forward with normalization, with officials in Riyadh leaving the door open. But in recent weeks, with the US Congress wrapping up its summer session ahead of the November election, the elusive deal has appeared further away. The normalization deal was always an uphill battle, since Saudi Arabia was demanding that Israel agree to establish a pathway to a future Palestinian state — a framework Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected and which, if adopted, could cause his far-right coalition partners to bolt.Meanwhile, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is slated to host Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas this week in Saudi Arabia.A Palestinian official told The Times of Israel last week that with a normalization agreement effectively off the table until at least the US presidential election, Abbas and bin Salman will try and coordinate their approaches to Washington, preparing for either Harris or Trump to enter the White House in January.Jacob Magid contributed to this report.

Shin Bet said to prepare bunker for Netanyahu, senior leadership amid Iranian threat-Known as the National Management Center, Jerusalem bunker can reportedly withstand hits from a range of existing weaponry, keep communications open to IDF headquarters-By ToI Staff Today, 10:14 pm-AUG 4,24

An underground bunker in Jerusalem where senior leaders can remain for an extended period during a war has been prepared by the Shin Bet security service and is fully operational, the Walla news site reported on Sunday, amid fear of attacks on Israel from Hezbollah and Iran. The bunker, reportedly built almost 20 years ago, can sustain hits from a range of existing weaponry, has command and control capabilities, and is connected to the Defense Ministry headquarters in Tel Aviv, the report said. The bunker, which is also known as the National Management Center, has not been used in the past 10 months of Israel’s war in Gaza.It has, however, been prepared for use now by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior figures as Israel braces for possible attacks from Iran and Hezbollah amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.Iran, its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, and the Palestinian Islamist terror group Hamas blame Israel for a blast that killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. His assassination came just hours after a strike claimed by Israel killed Hezbollah’s military chief, Fuad Shukr, on Tuesday evening near Beirut. Israel has claimed responsibility for killing Shukr but has not officially commented on Haniyeh. Both Iran and Hezbollah have vowed revenge for the killings, which came amid already explosive tensions against the background of Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel following Hamas’s October 7 invasion and massacre in southern Israel. As things stand, Home Front Command instructions to the Israeli public are unchanged, but if something changes, the IDF has stressed, the public will immediately be told. The National Management Center was built in the Jerusalem Hills at the cost of billions of shekels following the end of the Second Lebanon War in 2006. Its precise location and depth are unknown, according to a Ynet report. It can hold hundreds of people and is intended for the government as well as other essential civil bodies.According to Ynet, the National Management Center has not been deemed necessary in the war thus far. Preparing it for use at this time may be an indication of the severity of the threat from Iran and Hezbollah, especially considering it was not used during Iran’s attack on Israel in April when it launched over 300 missiles and drones at Israel, the vast majority of which were intercepted by Israel and its allies. The US is scrambling to revive a regional coalition that succeeded in almost entirely thwarting the previous direct Iranian attack on Israel, reports said, while Israeli officials concede that this time around there may be damage and casualties. The last time the bunker is known to have been used was in 2018 when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a series of high-level security cabinet meetings to be held there, likely to prevent leaks to the media.Regional tensions have spiraled dangerously since October 7, when Hamas led a devastating cross-border attack on Israel in which some 1,200 people were murdered and 251 hostages taken. Israel responded with a military campaign to destroy Hamas and free the hostages. The day after the Hamas assault, Hezbollah began attacking along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. As Israel and the terror group have traded fire, the violence has increased, with Hezbollah carrying out nearly daily attacks, firing dozens of rockets at the north on Saturday.

Jordan’s FM makes rare visit to Iran as US allies scramble to prevent escalation-Ayman Safadi is first top Jordanian official to visit Islamic Republic in two decades-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 2:37 pm-AUG 4,24

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi will travel to Iran on Sunday in a rare visit to discuss regional developments with his Iranian counterpart following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iranian state media reported.Safadi, who will be the first senior Jordanian official to pay an official visit to Iran in 20 years, is expected to meet with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Bagheri Khan, and other senior officials in Tehran later on Sunday, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported.Safadi “will deliver a message from His Majesty King Abdullah II to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the situation in the region and bilateral relations,” Jordan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.Regional tensions have spiked following the assassination of Haniyeh on Wednesday, which came hours after an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander from the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah. Fearing an all-out war in Lebanon, Jordan has called on its citizens to evacuate the country.Hamas and Iran have both accused Israel of assassinating Haniyeh and have pledged to retaliate. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the death nor denied it.Safadi has also accused Israel of becoming a “rogue state” by assassinating Haniyeh, who was in Iran for the inauguration of newly elected Pezeshkian.Safadi’s visit to Iran follows continued diplomatic contacts by the United States and its partners including France, Britain, Italy, and Egypt on Saturday to prevent further regional escalation.Jordan, which borders Israel to the east, would likely be in the path of any Iranian attack.Meanwhile, citing “the developments taking place in the region” and concerns for its citizens’ safety, Jordan’s foreign ministry on Saturday urged all Jordanian nationals in Lebanon to leave as soon as possible, and said those planning to travel to Lebanon should not do so.The Hashemite Kingdom’s flag carrier, Royal Jordanian Airlines, resumed flights to and from Beirut on Thursday morning. The carrier suspended the route on Monday, as Lebanon awaited an Israeli response to Hezbollah’s missile attack on Saturday, which killed 12 children in the Druze village of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights.Iran and Jordan are seeking to improve their relations following recent tensions related to Amman accusing pro-Iranian militias in Syria of smuggling narcotics into the country.Tensions have also flared over Jordan’s participation in a US-led coalition that intercepted Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel the night of April 13-14, which Iran said was in retaliation for the killing of its generals in an alleged Israeli strike in Syria on April 1.Jordan cooperates with American forces under the umbrella of the US Central Command, which oversees US military operations in the Middle East and works closely with other militaries, including those of Israel and Saudi Arabia. The last time a senior Jordanian official traveled to Iran on an official visit was in 2004 when then-prime minister Faisal al-Fayez went to Tehran.Last week, Jordan sent a lower-ranking official to Pezeshkian’s inauguration.

Hamas commander, eight other gunmen killed in IDF drone strikes near Tulkarem-First strike hit terror cell en route to carry out attack, military says; second drone strike hits operatives amid clashes in West Bank city-By Emanuel Fabian-Today, 2:54 pm-AUG 3,24

Nine Palestinian gunmen were killed in two Israeli drone strikes near the West Bank city of Tulkarem on Saturday morning, the military and Palestinian media saidIn the first incident, the Israel Defense Forces said it had targeted a cell of terrorists en route to carrying out an attack. The strike hit a vehicle on the outskirts of Tulkarem, killing all of those inside.According to the military, the five gunmen were “on their way to carry out a terrorist attack.”The IDF published footage of the strike.Palestinian media said that among the dead was Haitham Balidi, a commander in a local wing of Hamas in Tulkarem. Two others were identified as Abd al-Jabber al-Sabbagh and Ahmed Mahajna.Shortly after the drone strike, Israeli troops entered Tulkarem to carry out a counterterrorism operation, the IDF said.Amid the raid in Tulkarem, a second drone strike was carried out against a cell of gunmen who had opened fire at troops, the military said.At least four gunmen were reported dead in the strike, according to Palestinian media and Israeli military sources. The IDF published an image of the weapons and military equipment seized from the celL.In the past nine months, the IDF has carried out more than 55 airstrikes in the West Bank, using drones, attack helicopters, and fighter jets.Tensions have been high in the West Bank amid the war in the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7 when thousands of Hamas terrorists attacked southern Israel under a barrage of rockets fired at population centers all over the country. They brutally killed some 1,200 people, amid instances of torture and rape, and seized 251 hostages.Since October 7, troops have arrested some 4,400 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 1,850 affiliated with Hamas.According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, more than 590 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time. The IDF says the vast majority of them were gunmen killed in exchanges of fire, rioters who clashed with troops, or terrorists carrying out attacks.During the same period, 23 Israelis, including security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Another five members of the security forces were killed in clashes with terror operatives in the West Bank.

PM sent team after harsh Biden call, negotiators' criticism-Israeli team said to arrive in Cairo for hostage-truce talks with Egyptian mediators-High-level delegation to meet with officials in Egypt, according to Hebrew media, after Netanyahu gives green light; Qatar reportedly sitting out this round over Haniyeh’s killing-By ToI Staff Today, 5:27 pm-AUG 3,24

A high-level Israeli delegation reportedly arrived in Cairo on Saturday for indirect talks with American and Egyptian negotiators on reaching a hostage-truce deal in the Gaza Strip with the Hamas terror group, according to two sources with knowledge of the details quoted by Hebrew media. The Walla news site reported that Mossad spy agency chief David Barnea, Shin Bet security agency head Ronen Bar and Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian, head of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), were set to hold meetings in Cairo with Egyptian Intelligence head Abbas Kamel and senior Egyptian military officials.Discussions were expected to focus on the release of hostages, as well as security issues regarding the Egypt-Gaza border, according to the sources quoted in the report, which came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday evening that he had approved the delegation’s participation in renewed indirect talks.Hamas was quick to brush off Netanyahu’s announcement, with senior official Sami Abu Zuhri telling Reuters, “Netanyahu does not want to stop the war and is using these empty statements to cover up his crimes and evade their consequences. ”Netanyahu’s statement came immediately after a Channel 12 news report Friday that claimed he had rejected calls from his security chiefs to seize the current opportunity for a deal, and after Axios reported that US President Joe Biden pressed the Israeli premier in their call on Thursday to stop escalating tensions in the region and move immediately toward a deal. The Walla report added that Qatar was sitting out this round of talks in Cairo due to political sensitivity, having just buried Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Doha on Friday after he was assassinated in Qatar early Wednesday, in a strike widely ascribed to Israel. The participation of the Israeli team followed heavy pressure from the Biden administration on both Jerusalem and Cairo to continue the talks despite Haniyeh’s death, according to the sources, a week after Netanyahu returned from a trip to Washington.Axios also reported that the Biden administration was frustrated that it was kept in the dark by Israel about the assassination plans after Netanyahu gave the impression in Washington last week that he was taking on board the president’s ardor to close a deal with Hamas in Gaza. While Israel has claimed responsibility for killing Hezbollah’s military chief Fuad Shukr in Beirut on Tuesday night, it has not officially commented on the assassination of Haniyeh, which Hamas, Iran and their allies have blamed on the Jewish state.Despite the US pressure, the sources quoted by Walla said that Netanyahu does not believe the Cairo talks are likely to bear fruit, and as such chose not to send the IDF point man for the hostage talks, Nitzan Alon, as part of the delegation. The countries acting as mediators for the Gaza deal warned on Wednesday that the strikes on senior terrorist leaders could get in the way of an agreement.“Political assassinations & continued targeting of civilians in Gaza while talks continue leads us to ask, how can mediation succeed when one party assassinates the negotiator on the other side?” wrote Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on X. “Peace needs serious partners & a global stance against the disregard for human life.”Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said that the strikes undermine “the strenuous efforts made by Egypt and its partners to stop the war in the Gaza Strip,” and “indicate the absence of Israeli political will to calm the situation.”Washington, which sponsors the talks, has repeatedly said a deal is close. The latest talks are based on an Israel-backed proposal unveiled by Biden in May. But the US did not indicate any concern on Wednesday that the assassinations would hold up negotiations. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken would only say that a ceasefire in Gaza was “the enduring imperative.”Hamas wants a ceasefire agreement to end the war in Gaza, while Israel has vowed that the conflict will stop only once the hostages are released and Hamas is defeated. There have also been enduring disagreements over how the deal would be implemented.

LONDON (AFP)  — UK police readied Saturday for more far-right protests across England after a third night of rioting linked to misinformation about a mass stabbing that killed three young girls. The violence, which has seen scores of arrests and put Britain’s Muslim community on edge, presents the biggest challenge yet of Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s month-old premiership. It has also put hard-right agitators linked to soccer hooliganism in the spotlight at a time when anti-immigration elements are enjoying some electoral success in British politics.Police were gearing up for dozens of demonstrations after officers faced “serious and sustained levels of violence” during rioting in Sunderland, northeast England, on Friday night.Eight people were arrested and three officers required hospital treatment following hours of “utterly deplorable” disturbances, Northumbria Police Chief Superintendent Helena Barron said. Two officers remained in the hospital early Saturday, she added.Footage broadcast by the BBC showed a mob of several hundred rampaging in Sunderland’s city center, attacking police and setting fire to at least one car and a building next to a police office.Sunderland, UK. Patience seems to be running out. pic.twitter.com/6TPOviPpEp— RadioGenoa (@RadioGenoa) August 3, 2024-Other images shared on social media showed balaclava-clad youths throwing bricks and other missiles as fireworks and flares were let off.“The shocking scenes we have witnessed in Sunderland this evening are completely unacceptable,” Barron said, adding the “disorder, violence and damage” seen “will not be tolerated.”The unrest followed two nights of disturbances in several English towns and cities in the wake of Monday’s frenzied knife attack in Southport, near Liverpool on England’s northwest coast. They were fueled by false rumors on social media about the background of British-born 17-year-old suspect Axel Rudakubana, charged with several counts of murder and attempted murder over the attack at a Taylor Swift dance party. After the violence in Southport late Tuesday, unrest rocked the northern cities of Hartlepool and Manchester as well as London 24 hours later, where 111 people were arrested outside Starmer’s Downing Street residence.Thugs-In Southport, the mob threw bricks at a mosque, prompting hundreds of Muslim places of worship across the country to step up security amid fears of more anti-Islamic demonstrators.Police blamed supporters of the disbanded English Defence League, an anti-Islam organization founded 15 years ago whose supporters have been linked to soccer hooliganism. In Sunderland on Friday, rioters attacked police officers, set a police station and two cars on fire, and again targeted a mosque.Anti-racism campaign group Hope Not Hate has identified more than 30 events planned for Saturday and Sunday.Far-right social media channels have advertised “enough is enough” anti-immigrant rallies, and anti-facism groups have vowed to stage counter-protests.London’s Metropolitan Police said it had a “proportionate and risk-based” plan for rival pro-Palestinian and anti-immigration protests Saturday.Counter protests were also expected in the central city of Nottingham while South Yorkshire police said Friday they knew of a planned protest in the town of Rotherham.Prime Minister Keir Starmer has accused “thugs” of “hijacking” the nation’s grief to “sow hatred” and pledged that anyone carrying out violent acts will “face the full force of the law”.He has announced new measures that will allow the sharing of intelligence, wider deployment of facial-recognition technology and criminal behavior orders to restrict troublemakers from traveling.Labour politicians have accused Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage of stoking the trouble. At last month’s election, his anti-immigrant Reform UK party captured 14 percent of the vote — one of the largest vote shares for a far-right British party.

Sweden closing its Beirut embassy, evacuating staff-Iran warns Hezbollah will strike civilian targets deeper in Israel as war fears heighten-Tehran says it expects group to carry out ‘broader and deeper’ strikes in the wake of killing of Fuad Shukr; IDF strike kills ‘a main terrorist’ in Hezbollah’s southern command-By Agencies, Emanuel Fabian-and ToI Staff Today, 1:49 pm-AUG 3,24

Iran said on Saturday it expects Lebanon’s Tehran-backed Hezbollah terror group to strike deeper inside Israel and no longer be confined to military targets after Israel killed Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr. The warning comes amid increased fears of a major escalation in the area and continued cross-border fire between Israel and Hezbollah, which started attacking Israel the day after the October 7 Hamas-launched onslaught on Israel from Gaza. But a strike claimed by Israel in a crowded residential area of South Beirut changed the Lebanese terror group’s calculus, Iran’s mission to the United Nations said.A spokesperson for Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations told CBS that until now, Hezbollah has limited itself according to an “unwritten understanding” with Israel “confining their actions to border areas and shallow zones, targeting primarily military objectives.”“However, the [Israeli] regime’s attack on the Dahieh [neighborhood] in Beirut and the targeting of a residential building marked a deviation from these boundaries. We anticipate that, in its response, Hezbollah will choose both broader and deeper targets, and will not restrict itself solely to military targets and means,” the spokesperson said. The strike on Tuesday killed Shukr. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, five civilians — three women and two children — also died.Israel said Shukr was responsible for the rocket attack that killed 12 children and teens playing soccer in the Golan Heights, and had directed Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel since the Gaza war began.Hours after Shukr’s killing, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in a pre-dawn explosion in his accommodation in Tehran, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said.Israel has not claimed responsibility. On Thursday, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said Israel and “those who are behind it must await our inevitable response” to the killings of both Shukr and Haniyeh.Iran and Hamas have also vowed to retaliate.A main terrorist-The clashes continued over the weekend.A prominent Hezbollah operative in the terror group’s so-called Southern Front unit was killed in an Israeli drone strike on Saturday in southern Lebanon, the IDF said. The strike in the town of Bazourieh, near the coastal city of Tyre killed Ali Abd Ali.The IDF said Ali was a “main terrorist in the Southern Front of the Hezbollah terror organization,” and involved in planning and carrying out numerous attacks. His killing is a “significant blow to the functioning of the Southern Front and the Hezbollah terror organization in the region,” the IDF added. The Southern Front is a Hezbollah regional unit responsible for the terror group’s activities in the entire southern Lebanon, the equivalent of a regional command.A source close to Hezbollah said late Friday that Israel also carried out strikes on a convoy of trucks entering Lebanon from Syria.“Three Israeli strikes targeted a convoy of tanker trucks on the Syrian-Lebanese border in the Hawsh el-Sayyed Ali area, injuring one Syrian driver,” the source told AFP.It was the latest in a series of Israeli strikes in the border area, the source added. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor also reported Israeli strikes inside Syria near the border with Lebanon, without mentioning any casualties. The strikes targeted an area near a border crossing “used by Hezbollah to move trucks and group members” between Lebanon and Syria, said the Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria.“One of the strikes targeted a truck convoy,” while another targeted “a farm on the outskirts of Qusayr in Homs province,” the Observatory said on Saturday.Iran-backed Hezbollah has a strong presence on both sides of the eastern stretch of the Lebanese-Syria border, where it supports the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.Meanwhile, incoming rocket sirens were activated in the Western Galilee community of Matat, with at least one rocket exploding in an open area.In a further sign of tension,  Sweden said Saturday it was shutting its embassy in Beirut after urging thousands of its citizens to leave Lebanon.“The foreign ministry has instructed its staff to leave Beirut and travel to Cyprus, and the foreign ministry is planning a temporary relocation of its embassy,” Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom told Swedish Radio. The decision had been taken “initially for the month of August but may be extended depending on the security situation.”“The ministry is monitoring developments closely,” he said.According to the foreign ministry, as many as 10,000 Swedish nationals may have traveled to Lebanon this summer, defying a travel warning in place for the country since October 2023.“I urge Swedes in Lebanon to leave the country by whichever means possible, while they still can,” he said.

At least 32 killed in Islamist suicide bombing, shooting attack on busy Mogadishu beach-Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group, claims responsibility for attack on popular Lido beach area; police kill five gunmen in addition to suicide bomber-By AFP Today, 12:13 pm-AUG 3,24

MOGADISHU, Somalia  — An Al-Shabaab suicide bomber and gunmen attacked a busy beach in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, killing 32 people and wounding scores more, in one of the deadliest attacks in months, police said on Saturday. The Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists have been waging an insurgency against the internationally backed federal government for more than 17 years and have previously targeted the Lido beach area, popular with business people and officials.Unverified videos shared online in the immediate aftermath of the attack showed people scattering along a street, with a number of clips purporting to show bloodied bodies lying on the beachfront.“More than 32 civilians died in this attack and about 63 others were wounded, some of them critically,” police spokesman Abdifatah Adan Hassan told reporters during a press conference.“Targeting and blasting to kill 32 members from the civilian population means these Kharijites are not going to target only government centers, soldiers and officials,” he said, using the term Somali officials adopt to describe Al-Shabaab.The assault, for which Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility in a post on a pro-Shabaab website, began late on Friday when a suicide bomber detonated a device and gunmen stormed the area, police and witnesses told AFP.Officer Mohamed Omar told AFP they had “shot civilians randomly.”Al-Shabaab claims responsibility for the Beachview hotel in Mogadishu attack last night which left 32 dead and over 63 wounded. pic.twitter.com/Xb200ePcYJ— Omar Nor (@Omaarnor) August 3, 2024-He said security forces had ended the attack and killed five gunmen, while a sixth member of the group “blew himself [up] at the beach.”Witnesses said there were many people at the popular location when the explosion occurred, describing how gunmen then stormed the area.“Everybody was panicked and it was hard to know what was happening because shooting started soon after the blast,” witness Abdilatif Ali told AFP.He said that people attempted to take cover on the ground or flee.“I saw many people strewn [on the ground] and some of them were dead and others wounded,” he said.Ahmed Yare witnessed the attack unfold from a nearby hotel.“I saw wounded people at the beachside. People were screaming in panic and it was hard to notice who was dead and who was still alive,” he told AFP.Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for numerous bombings and attacks in Mogadishu and other parts of the country, whose government is pressing on with an offensive against the Islamists. The Lido area has been the target of previous attacks, including a six-hour Al-Shabaab siege of a beachside hotel in 2023, which left six civilians dead and 10 wounded.Five people were killed in a powerful car bomb blast at a cafe in the capital last month. In March, the militants killed three people and wounded 27 in an hours-long siege of another Mogadishu hotel, breaking a relative lull in the fighting.

It is a humiliation for Iran and a huge security breach' Mossad hired IRGC agents in May to plant explosives that killed Haniyeh — report-Iran said to arrest dozens, including senior officials over killing; UK daily says Israel planned to target Hamas chief at Raisi funeral but opted to wait, hit him in IRGC guesthouse-By ToI Staff Today, 9:18 am-AUG 3,24

The Mossad spy agency enlisted agents from within the Revolutionary Guards to plant explosives in the Tehran guesthouse where Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was staying, according to a Saturday article in The Telegraph. The report came amid news that the authorities in Tehran were carrying out a series of arrests in connection with the killing, with the New York Times saying senior Iranian intelligence officers, military officials, and staff at the guesthouse were among some two dozen people held. The Telegraph report appeared to corroborate a New York Times article on Thursday that said the Palestinian terror chief was not killed in an aerial strike as Iran has claimed.Israel has not commented on Haniyeh’s death since the explosion early Wednesday morning, though Iran and its proxies in the region, including Hamas, have vowed revenge on the Jewish state. The Telegraph cited two Iranian officials as saying that the initial plan was to assassinate Haniyeh when he was in Tehran in May for the funeral of the late Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash. That operation was reportedly called off due to the large number of people in the building and the seemingly high possibility of failure.Instead, according to the British daily, the agents went ahead and planted explosives in three different rooms at the compound, and later left Iran. The sources quoted in the report said surveillance footage shows them moving discretely from room to room. They reportedly detonated the bombs from abroad.“They are now certain that Mossad hired agents from the Ansar al-Mahdi security unit,” an official in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps told the newspaper, referring to a unit tasked with protecting senior officials.Another IRGC official was quoted as saying: “It is a humiliation for Iran and a huge security breach.” The IRGC runs the guesthouse in an upscale neighborhood of Tehran where Haniyeh and other dignitaries were staying.“It’s still a question for everyone how this happened, I can’t understand it. There must be something higher in the hierarchy that no one knows about,” the official added, noting that a team was working on a spin that would paint the attack as a lesser security breach. Both Iranian and Hamas officials have claimed that Haniyeh was killed by a missile fired from the air, even launched from outside the country. But asked about the killing on Thursday, IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said the Israeli military did not carry out any other airstrike overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday aside from the assassination of Hezbollah military chief Fuad Shukr in Beirut.“We struck on Tuesday night in Lebanon and killed Fuad Shukr in an accurate aerial strike. I want to emphasize, there was no other aerial strike, not a missile and not an Israeli drone, in the entire Middle East that night, and I won’t comment further,” Hagari said during a press conference.Earlier on Thursday, The New York Times had reported that the explosion that killed Haniyeh and his bodyguard was set off by a sophisticated, remote-controlled bomb smuggled about two months ago into his room at the Tehran guesthouse, which lines up with Raisi’s funeral in May.The official also told The Telegraph that addressing the security breach was more important to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei than seeking revenge, though he reportedly ordered a direct strike on Israel hours after the explosion. The New York Times reported early Saturday morning that Iran had arrested at least two dozen people over suspected connection to Haniyeh’s death, citing two Iranians familiar with the investigation. Those arrested were said to include senior Iranian intelligence officers, military officials, and staff at the IRGC-run guesthouse. The Revolutionary Guards Corps’ specialized intelligence unit for espionage has taken over the investigation and was hunting down suspects that it hopes will lead it to members of the assassin team that planned, aided and carried out the killing, two Iranian officials told the Times. The Telegraph report also suggested that the killing was purposely timed to coincide with the swearing-in ceremony of new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, which Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend, to besmirch the new premier’s reputation.“No intact brain can accept that this happened by accident, especially on Mr. Pezeshkian’s first day in office,” a source close to Pezeshkian was quoted as saying. “He may have to go to war with Israel within his first few days in office, and it’s all because of the IRGC.”Israel pledged to target Hamas leaders over the Iran-backed terror group’s devastating October 7 massacre, which saw thousands of terrorists murder some 1,200 people and seize 251 hostages, mostly civilians, many amid acts of brutality and sexual assault.Iran and its allies are widely expected to respond militarily to the killings blamed on Israel, though experts have said the retaliation would be measured to avoid a wider conflagration. The IDF said on Thursday evening that it was on “high alert” and ready to handle any threat, as the country braced for a response to the terror leaders’ assassinations. The United States, which Iranian and Hamas officials have accused of having approved the Tehran hit, has stressed its commitment to defending Israel against possible ballistic missile and drone attacks from Iran. The Pentagon said on Friday that the US was moving a fighter jet squadron to the Middle East and maintaining an aircraft carrier in the region, both to help defend Israel from possible attacks by Iran and its proxies and to safeguard US troops. In April, a US-led coalition intercepted dozens of missiles and drones fired by Iran against Israel and helped down nearly all of them.

Israel said to strike known Hezbollah smuggling area along Syria-Lebanon border-Source close to Lebanese terror group tells AFP that 3 Israeli strikes targeted convoy of tanker trucks, injuring a Syrian driver-By AFP and Emanuel Fabian-Today, 4:46 am-AUG 3,24

A source close to Lebanese terror group Hezbollah said late Friday that Israel carried out strikes on a convoy of trucks entering Lebanon from Syria.“Three Israeli strikes targeted a convoy of tanker trucks on the Syrian-Lebanese border in the Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali area, injuring one Syrian driver,” the source told AFP.It was the latest in a series of Israeli strikes in the border area, the source added.Iran-backed Hezbollah has a strong presence on both sides of the eastern stretch of the Lebanese-Syria border, where it supports the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, and has been known to use the area to smuggle Iranian weapons into Lebanon.Hours before the attack in Hawsh al-Sayyid Ali, media outlets in Lebanon reported an Israeli strike several miles away in the Lebanese village of Qasr.Separate reports later said the strike targeted the Dabaa Airport in Syria.Israel has for years carried out attacks on what it has described as Iran-linked targets in Syria, where Tehran’s influence has grown since it began supporting Assad in a civil war that started in 2011, but rarely comments on them publicly.Since Hamas’s brutal October 7 massacre, which saw some 1,200 people killed in Israel and 253 kidnapped, Israel has escalated its strikes on Iranian-backed terror targets in Syria and has also struck Syrian army air defenses and some Syrian forces.Hezbollah has been exchanging near-daily fire with Israel since it started launching attacks from Lebanon a day after its Palestinian ally Hamas’s terror onslaught, which sparked the war in Gaza.Hezbollah has muted its attacks following the killing of its military chief Fuad Shukr in Beirut on Tuesday and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday. The Lebanese terror organization group claimed responsibility for five attacks on military positions in northern Israel on Friday.Since the Hezbollah attacks began on October 8, the skirmishes in the north have resulted in 25 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 18 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.Hezbollah has named 385 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing clashes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. In Lebanon, another 69 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have been killed.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

BIG SUNSPOT ALERT: A potentially significant sunspot group is emerging over the sun's southeastern limb, right here. Astronomers are encouraged to monitor the active region, which may be unusually large and a source of strong flares. Solar flare alerts: SMS Text.THE STORM IS SUBSIDING: A close encounter with a CME during the early hours of Aug. 4th sparked a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm. Just before sunrise in Colorado, "we saw a nice display of auroras," reports Aaron Watson, who sends this picture from Grand Mesa, CO:"There was a brief burst of color at the start of the storm just after 3 am local time (9:00 UTC), then it faded for awhile, then came back even stronger just before morning twilight," says Watson. "Once it got going, the aurora was visible as a glow to the north with the unaided eye, although I couldn't distinguish the pink hue without the camera."Storm levels are now subsiding to category G1 (Minor). This will cause auroras to withdraw toward the Arctic Circle. Nevertheless, camera-only (too faint for the naked eye) auroras may still be photographed across central Europe and northern-tier US states during the night of Aug. 4-5. Aurora alerts: SMS Text-Spaceweather.com-A CONVERSATION BETWEEN SUNSPOTS: Sunspots do like to talk to one another. Yesterday, Aug. 3rd, sunspot AR3775 produced a strong M7.3-class solar flare. An unnamed sunspot just behind the sun's eastern limb quickly responded with its own M5.4-class explosion:These are called "sympathetic solar flares"--that is, pairs of explosions that occur almost simultaneously in widely-spaced active regions. Long ago, researchers assumed the eruptions were just coincidence, but a 2002 study proved otherwise. Some sunspots are linked by nearly-invisible magnetic loops in the sun's corona. Instabilities can rapidly travel from one to another, creating a chain reaction of explosions. If AR3775 is indeed linked to the unseen sunspot, more twin flares may be in the offing as both turn toward Earth in the days ahead. Debby expected to become hurricane before hitting Florida's Gulf Coast-By Rich Mckay-August 4, 20246:51 PM EDT

Aug 4 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Debby is expected to strengthen rapidly into a hurricane before making landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida's Gulf Coast by midday on Monday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday, warning of life-threatening ocean surges. The hurricane center forecast life-threatening conditions, including storm surges up to 10 feet (3 meters) in some areas. As it slowly moves north through the week, the storm may bring "potentially historic rainfall" of between 10 and 20 inches (25 and 50 cm) and catastrophic flooding to Georgia and South Carolina, it said."This is going to be the story of this storm," said Jamie Rhome, the deputy director of the hurricane center. "It's slow motion is going to dump historic amounts of rainfall - potentially over 20 inches. You're talking about catastrophic flooding."The storm could be like Hurricane Harvey, which slammed into Corpus Christi, Texas, in August 2017. While downgraded into a tropical storm as it moved inland, it lingered over the state, dumping about 50 inches of rain on Houston.Harvey is rated as one of the wettest storms in U.S. history, causing more than 100 deaths and $125 billion in damage, primarily from flooding in the Houston metropolitan area.Rhome said Debby is fueled by exceptionally warm Gulf waters.Climate scientists believe man-made global warming from burning fossil fuels has raised the temperature of the oceans, making storms bigger and more devastating.Preparing for Debby, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called up 3,000 National Guard troops and placed most of the state's cities and counties under emergency orders, while mandatory evacuations were ordered in parts of the Gulf Coast counties of Citrus, Dixie, Franklin, Levy and Wakulla.DeSantis said there are more than 17,000 linemen and other electric workers ready to restore power. The governors of Georgia and South Carolina also declared states of emergency ahead of the storm.HEAVY RAIN-Debby became a tropical storm late on Saturday. As of 5 p.m. EDT (2200 GMTDebby was about 120 miles (193 km) west of Tampa and moving toward the Gulf Coast at 12 mph (19 kph), with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph), the NHC said.To become a hurricane, sustained winds must reach 74 mph.The center of Debby will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico through Sunday and reach the Florida Big Bend coast by midday on Monday, the hurricane center added. Debby is then expected to move slowly across northern Florida and southern Georgia on Monday and Tuesday, it said. The storm is expected to lose some strength after landfall but bring heavy rain as it crosses central Florida out to the Atlantic coast, before crawling up to Savannah, Georgia, and then onward to Charleston, South Carolina, early in the week.Ocean surges forecast for Bonita Beach northward to Tampa Bay could send sea waves further inland than normal, damaging structures and endangering anyone in their path.A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Florida and Georgia coasts from Ponte Vedra Beach to the Savannah River, including the Fort Myers area, which was crushed by Hurricane Ian in 2022.The last hurricane to make a direct hit on the Big Bend region was Hurricane Idalia, which briefly gained Category 4 strength before making landfall as a Category 3 in August 2023, with winds of more than 125 mph. The National Centers for Environmental Information estimates it did $3.5 billion in damage.Forecasters expect a large number of Atlantic hurricanes in the 2024 season, which began on June 1, with four to seven seen as major. That exceeds the record-breaking 2005 season that spawned the devastating Katrina and Rita hurricanes.Only one hurricane, Beryl, has yet formed in the Atlantic this year. The earliest Category 5 storm on record, it struck the Caribbean and Mexico's Yucatan peninsula before rolling up the Gulf Coast of Texas as a Category 1 storm, with sustained winds up to 95 mph (153 kph).Reporting by Rich McKay in Atlanta; Additional reporting by Chandni Shah, Jonathan Allen and Surbhi Misra; Editing by William Mallard, Jane Merriman, Will Dunham, Mark Porter and Paul Simao

California wildfire now fourth-largest in state history, hot weather offers no relief-By Rich Mckay-August 3, 20249:27 PM EDT

Aug 3 (Reuters) - More than 6,000 firefighters in California's Central Valley continued to battle the largest blaze in the U.S. on Saturday, which burned its way into the history books as the state's fourth-largest conflagration on record. There was barely a taste of rain on Saturday from thunderstorms that brought wind and rainfall of zero to one-tenth of an inch, forecasters said. The heat of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) along with winds up to 25 mph or more in some spots, offered little relief to the firefighters trying to contain the Park Fire, scorching the wilderness terrain some 100 miles (161 km) north of Sacramento, the state capital."We had some thunderstorms that just brought us down-drafts, that's a problem," said Christopher Young, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire. "Lightning is a factor we worry about."Blazes from the Park Fire, started by an alleged arsonist who pushed a flaming car down a 60-foot gully near Chico, California, on July 24, has since burned more than 400,000 acres (162,200 hectares) or more than 600 square miles, an area larger than the city of Los Angeles. The 42-year-old man arrested had not entered a plea as of Saturday, but was charged with arson and held without bail, officials said.More than 560 homes and other structures were destroyed since the blaze started 11 days ago, feeding off of downed timber and tinder-dry grass and brush. The fire was 27% contained on Saturday, officials said.More than 4,000 people were evacuated in the Park Fire including retiree Jim Young, 65, of Red Bluff, California, where he lived in a trailer home with his dog, a black Labrador Retriever named Sparky. He and the dog spent the last eight days camped out with some other families in a gravel lot at a wilderness trailhead about 6 miles from his home, worrying every day if it was safe."We just found out we can go home," Young told Reuters on Saturday evening. "Our property is safe. So many lost everything. But me and Sparky can go home now."The rough, wilderness terrain means it takes two to three hours to reach the fire lines, officials said. Some firefighters are being flown to the front lines by helicopters, with some expected to stay there for days with supplies also flown in.The national wildfire season has had an intense start, raising the risk of stretching firefighting resources too thin. The National Interagency Fire Center has already requested help from firefighters in Australia and New Zealand, who will arrive starting Aug. 7 and deploy to Oregon and Washington.Reporting by Rich McKay in Atlanta; Editing by Nick Zieminski and Matthew Lewis
