Rome — Pope Francis opened a big meeting Wednesday on the future of the Catholic Church, where contentious topics will be discussed. The three-week General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops at the Vatican, sometimes called the Super Bowl of the Catholic Church, has drawn bishops from around the world to discuss hot button issues including whether priests should be allowed to get married, if divorced and remarried Catholics should receive communion, whether women should be allowed to become deacons and how the church will handle matters around the LGBTQ community.Even before it kicked off this year's synod was already historic: It's the first time that women and laypeople are being allowed to vote — though 80% of participants are still bishops, and thus men. But the biggest bombshell dropped earlier this week, when Francis opened the door for the possibility of Catholic priests blessing same-sex unions.His remarks, published Monday, came with caveats: Francis stressed that blessings shouldn't be seen as elevating same-sex unions to the sacred place of heterosexual marriage, but until now, the church's position had been that same-sex unions could not be blessed, because "God cannot bless sin."In his statements — issued in reply to cardinals who had requested clarity on the church's position on the matter — Francis said, "we cannot be judges who only deny, reject, and exclude."In his opening homily Wednesday for the synod, the pope said that "everyone, everyone, everyone," must be allowed in.LGBTQ organizations welcomed the change in tone, while church conservatives blasted Francis for appearing to dilute Catholic doctrine and sow confusion. "It is a very slim minority of Catholics who are opposed to same-sex unions."Father Gerald Murray, a conservative priest from Manhattan, disagreed."For the pope to say that priests and bishops can find a way to do this, it's wrong," Murray said. Dear Brothers,

I greet you and I offer you a cordial welcome. Thank you for your visit, which I appreciate. In the past, I had occasion to meet here in the Vatican with your organization, the voice of the Rabbis in Europe. I am happy that we have been able to strengthen our relationship over time, particularly in recent years.My first thought and prayer goes, above all else, to everything that has happened in the last few weeks. Yet again violence and war have erupted in that Land blessed by the Most High, which seems continually assailed by the vileness of hatred and the deadly clash of weapons. The spread of anti-Semitic demonstrations, which I strongly condemn, is also of great concern.Dear brothers, in the darkness of conflict, we who are believers in the one God, look to him whom the prophet Isaiah calls “the judge between the nations and the arbiter for many peoples”. He adds, almost as a consequence of his judgment, a marvelous prophecy of peace: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Is 2:4). In this time in which we are witnessing violence and destruction, we believers are called to build fraternity and open paths of reconciliation for all and before all, in the name of the Almighty who, as another prophet says, has “plans for welfare and not for evil” (Jer 29:11). Not weapons, not terrorism, not war, but compassion, justice and dialogue are the fitting means for building peace.I would like to reflect on the art of dialogue. Human beings, who have a social nature and who live in contact with others, find their fulfillment in the weaving of social relationships. In this sense, humanity is not only capable of dialogue, but is dialogue itself. Poised between heaven and earth, it is only in dialogue with the transcendent One and with our brothers and sisters who accompany us that we can understand and mature. The word “dialogue” etymologically means “through the word”. The Word of the Most High is the light that illumines the paths of life (cf. Ps 119:105): it directs our own steps to the search for our neighbour, to acceptance and to patience; certainly not to the brusque passion of vengeance and the folly of bitter hatred. How important it is, therefore, for us believers to be witnesses of dialogue! If we apply these observations to the context of Jewish-Christian dialogue, we can say that we draw near to each other through encounter, listening and fraternal exchange, acknowledging ourselves to be servants and disciples of that divine Word, the living channel from which our words spring forth. In this way, in order to become builders of peace, we are called to be builders of dialogue, not only with our own strengths and abilities, but with the help of the Almighty. Indeed, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain” (Ps.127:1).The dialogue with Judaism is particularly important for us Christians, because we have Jewish roots. Jesus was born and lived as a Jew; he himself is the first guarantor of the Jewish heritage at the centre of Christianity and we who are Christians need you, dear brothers. We need Judaism to understand ourselves better. It is therefore important that Jewish Christian dialogue should keep its theological dimension alive, while continuing to face social, cultural and political questions.Our religious traditions are tightly interwoven: we are not two alien creeds, developed independently in separate times and places, having no influence on one another. During his visit to the Synagogue of Rome, Pope John Paul II observed that the Jewish religion is not extrinsic, “but in a certain way, it is ‘intrinsic’ to our religion”. He called you “our beloved brothers”, “our older brothers” (Address, 13 April 1986). Therefore one could say that ours is more than an interreligious dialogue. It is a family dialogue. When I went to the Synagogue of Rome, I said that “We all belong to a single family, the family of God, who accompanies us and protects us as his people” (Address, 17 January 2016).Dear brothers, we are linked to each other before the one God; together we are called to bear witness to his word with our dialogue and to his peace with our actions. The White House says that US President Joe Biden spoke Tuesday with the leader of key US partner Jordan, where US Secretary of State Blinken has visited multiple times since Hamas launched its October 7 attack on Israel.Biden and King Abdullah II “discussed urgent mechanisms to stem violence, calm rhetoric, and reduce regional tensions,” a White House statement says.It adds that the two leaders “agreed that it is critical to ensure that Palestinians are not forcibly displaced outside of Gaza” and that Biden had “confirmed unwavering US support for Jordan and His Majesty’s leadership.”

Cornell student to face federal charges for threats against Jewish students-By AP

ITHACA, New York — A Cornell University student has been arrested and accused of posting threatening statements online about Jewish students at the school, law enforcement officials say.Patrick Dai, 21, a junior from Pittsford, New York, is charged in a federal criminal complaint with posting threats to kill or injure another using interstate communications, according to a joint announcement from the US Attorney’s office, FBI, New York State police and Cornell University Police.It’s not immediately clear if Dai has hired an attorney. The federal courts website has not yet been updated with the case. Dai did not respond to a Facebook message and his Cornell email address cannot be immediately accessed.The charge carries a possible five-year prison sentence, officials say.The menacing messages, posted over the weekend on a forum about fraternities and sororities, alarmed students at the Ivy League school in upstate New York. New York Jewish Week via JTA — Jewish students at Columbia University said at a press conference on Monday that they and their peers on campus had been subjected to a series of antisemitic incidents in recent weeks, including death threats, and demanded the university administration take action to protect Jews on campus.The press conference came after a series of antisemitic and anti-Israel actions at the school in the wake of Hamas’s October 7 assault on Israel, in which over 1,400 people were killed, most of them civilians, and over 240 seized as hostages, leading Israel to declare war on the terror group.An Israeli student was assaulted in the days after the Hamas onslaught in what police charged as a hate crime. A statement signed by a range of student groups placed blame for the October 7 attack on Israel. After a swastika was found in a bathroom in the school’s International Affairs Building last Friday, Keren Yarhi-Milo, the dean of the School of International and Public Affairs, said, “I am shocked and dismayed that anyone would promote this most notorious symbol of antisemitism, hatred and racial supremacy.”Dozens of Columbia faculty in a letter published on Monday called the Hamas attack a “military action” linked to Israel’s occupation.Police and Jewish security groups have reported a spike in antisemitic incidents since the start of the war in the New York region and around the country. Recent incidents in New York, where Jews are targeted by hate crimes far more than any other group, have ranged from physical assaults to graffiti and harassment.Monday’s press conference took place outside the gates of the school’s campus in Morningside Heights and did not appear to be organized by a student group. At least three of the four student speakers, however, have spoken to the media in recent weeks about antisemitism on campus, and the event was publicized by a professional public relations agency. Around 20 students attended.students said the school’s administration did not take sufficient action after receiving reports of antisemitism, and has not held perpetrators accountable.“As a result of this inaction, there are Jewish students who do not feel physically safe on campus,” Noa Fay, a senior at Barnard College, said in a statement.Among the incidents the students listed were the swastika graffiti, students carrying signs saying “resistance is not terrorism” during an on-campus walkout and, at Columbia’s law school, a student saying “F— the Jews” to a visibly Jewish student. They also said Jews were targeted with antisemitic tropes in group chats. Reached by the New York Jewish Week, the university did not confirm or deny any of the incidents.“With my own eyes I have witnessed Columbia students resort to based bigotry,” junior Yoni Kurtz said, according to the New York Post. “I’ve seen them parrot foul antisemitic tropes, I’ve seen them label visibly Muslim students as terrorists, I’ve seen them roar in approval for calls of violence against civilians, and I’ve seen them take to social media nearly every day of the last three weeks to call for each other’s deaths.”The students demanded the university clarify its policies on identity-based bigotry, including antisemitism; enforce those policies; devote more funding and staff to supporting student victims; and create spaces to bring students together from different backgrounds.“The university’s lack of a meaningful, practical response to these acts of blatant antisemitism is incredibly disheartening,” said sophomore Jessie Brenner. “Students of all religious identities, political affiliations and ethnicities deserve to feel safe on campus and supported by the administration.”The activists also demanded the administration publicly condemn Hamas and treat students who support the terror group differently from those who support Palestinian rights. The administration has released several statements since October 7, but none has mentioned the terror group.“If these measures are not taken, we fear that campus will only continue to become more divisive, more volatile and more unsafe,” said Kurtz.Following the press conference, the university told the New York Jewish Week, “Antisemitism or any other form of hate are antithetical to Columbia’s values and can lead to acts of harassment or violence. When this type of speech is unlawful or violates university rules, it will not be tolerated.”A university spokesperson added, “We are using every available tool to keep our community safe and that includes protecting our Jewish students from antisemitic discrimination or harassment.”The university has made a series of statements since the October 7 attack, which has led to a spike in antisemitism worldwide. Two days after the attack, Columbia University President Minouche Shafik said that she was “devastated by the horrific attack on Israel.”In a separate statement earlier this month, Shafik said, “Some are using this moment to spread antisemitism, Islamophobia, bigotry against Palestinians and Israelis.” She added, “I have been disheartened that some of this abhorrent rhetoric is coming from members of our community, including members of our faculty and staff.”On October 12, three Columbia administrators released a statement on the conflict, condemning antisemitism and Islamophobia and saying, “We reject and will not tolerate hate speech, violence, or the threat or any acts of violence in our community.”Jewish students have also faced threats on other campuses in New York City and state. Last week, Jewish students at New York City’s Cooper Union college sheltered in the school’s library as pro-Palestinian demonstrators pounded on the door and shouted slogans. On Sunday, police at Cornell University were called to the school’s kosher dining hall, and the campus Hillel warned students to stay away from it, after anonymous antisemitic posts on a Greek life website that included threats to “shoot up” the building and kill and rape Jewish students. A suspect was arrested on Tuesday.War erupted after Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 2,500 terrorists burst across the border into Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing some 1,400 people and seizing some 240 hostages of all ages. The vast majority of those killed as gunmen seized border communities were civilians — including babies, children and the elderly. Entire families were executed in their homes, and over 260 were slaughtered at an outdoor festival, many amid horrific acts of brutality by the terrorists, in what US President Joe Biden has highlighted as “the worst massacre of the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”The Hamas-controlled health ministry in Gaza says that Israel has killed over 8,500 people in its campaign to destroy Hamas. The figures cannot be independently verified and are believed to include many slain terrorists, as well as victims of misfired Palestinian rockets.
