Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday
said Tuesday that Israel was “completely out of its mind,” accusing it
of crimes against humanity over its ongoing war against the Hamas terror
group.Erdogan vowed to bring Jerusalem to justice over “crimes
committed in the Gaza Strip,” and accused the United States and Europe
of being complicit in them, while making no mention of Hamas’s deadly
onslaught on October 7.“I believe that we should stop Israel — which
looks as if it’s completely out of its mind and lost it — as soon as
possible. We will ensure that those responsible for war crimes in Gaza
will face justice,” he said in a statement following a cabinet
meeting.Erdogan, whose government only recently restored full diplomatic
ties with Israel, has massively stepped up his criticism of the country
during the war. Earlier this week, he asserted that Hamas was not a
terrorist organization but a liberation group of “mujahideen” fighting
for its lands and people.In an address to a mass pro-Palestinian rally
in Istanbul Saturday, Erdogan said that his country was making
preparations to proclaim Israel a “war criminal” for its actions in
Gaza.Israel said Saturday it was pulling its diplomats out of Turkey to

the escalating rhetoric from Turkey, I have instructed the return of
diplomatic representatives from Turkey in order to reassess

murdered more than 1,400 people in southern Israel, the majority of them

Erdogan has become much more vocal as the reported death toll from
Israel’s military response has grown. He has not officially condemned
Hamas’s slaughter of civilians — an attitude that has drawn ire from
Israeli ministers.The Hamas-controlled health ministry in Gaza says that
Israel has killed over 8,500 people in its campaign, mainly civilians.
The figures cannot be independently verified and are believed to include
many slain terrorists, as well as victims of misfired Palestinian
rockets. Israel says some 1,500 terrorists were killed in Israel
following the October 7 attack.Anti-Israel banners and graffiti, along
with Palestinian flags, have become commonplace across Istanbul, as many
of its citizens fume over Israel’s response to the massacre.
Antisemitic incidents have also spiked in the country, too.Israel was a
long-time regional ally of Turkey before Erdogan came to power, but ties
imploded after a 2010 Israeli commando raid on the Gaza-bound Mavi
Marmara ship, part of a blockade-busting flotilla, that left dead 10
Turkish activists who attacked IDF soldiers aboard the ship.Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Erdogan repeatedly aimed brickbats at
each other in the ensuing years, including mutual charges of genocide.
In July 2014, Erdogan accused the Jewish state of “keeping Hitler’s
spirit alive” during a war with Gaza.Ties later saw a moderate
improvement, but both countries withdrew their ambassadors in 2018 amid
violence in Gaza and the Trump administration’s relocation of its
embassy to Jerusalem.Facing hardening diplomatic isolation and economic
woes, Erdogan began to publicly display an openness toward rapprochement
in December 2020. In August of last year, Israel and Turkey announced a
full renewal of diplomatic ties.In late September, Erdogan met with

enthusiastically discussed avenues of cooperation. President Isaac
Herzog was hosted by Erdogan last March in Ankara — the first high-level

maintains deep ties with Hamas. Erdogan has been in close contact with

2020, Israel provided Turkish intelligence with evidence that members of
Hamas’s military wing operate in the office, under the supervision of

interview with Turkish TV earlier this month, Qatar-based former Hamas
leader Khaled Mashaal said he has “great respect for Turkey,” adding

address to members of Erdogan’s party in 2014, he said he hoped to

at a press conference on Monday that they and their peers on campus had
been subjected to a series of antisemitic incidents in recent weeks,
including death threats, and demanded the university administration take
action to protect Jews on campus.The press conference came after a
series of antisemitic and anti-Israel actions at the school in the wake
of Hamas’s October 7 assault on Israel, in which over 1,400 people were
killed, most of them civilians, and over 240 seized as hostages, leading
Israel to declare war on the terror group.An Israeli student was
assaulted in the days after the Hamas onslaught in what police charged
as a hate crime. A statement signed by a range of student groups placed
blame for the October 7 attack on Israel. After a swastika was found in a
bathroom in the school’s International Affairs Building last Friday,
Keren Yarhi-Milo, the dean of the School of International and Public
Affairs, said, “I am shocked and dismayed that anyone would promote this
most notorious symbol of antisemitism, hatred and racial
supremacy.”Dozens of Columbia faculty in a letter published on Monday
called the Hamas attack a “military action” linked to Israel’s
occupation.Police and Jewish security groups have reported a spike in
antisemitic incidents since the start of the war in the New York region
and around the country. Recent incidents in New York, where Jews are
targeted by hate crimes far more than any other group, have ranged from

university did not confirm or deny any of the incidents.“With my own
eyes I have witnessed Columbia students resort to based bigotry,” junior

foul antisemitic tropes, I’ve seen them label visibly Muslim students
as terrorists, I’ve seen them roar in approval for calls of violence
against civilians, and I’ve seen them take to social media nearly every
day of the last three weeks to call for each other’s deaths.”The
students demanded the university clarify its policies on identity-based
bigotry, including antisemitism; enforce those policies; devote more
funding and staff to supporting student victims; and create spaces to
bring students together from different backgrounds.“The university’s
lack of a meaningful, practical response to these acts of blatant
antisemitism is incredibly disheartening,” said sophomore Jessie
Brenner. “Students of all religious identities, political affiliations
and ethnicities deserve to feel safe on campus and supported by the
administration.”The activists also demanded the administration publicly
condemn Hamas and treat students who support the terror group
differently from those who support Palestinian rights. The
administration has released several statements since October 7, but none
has mentioned the terror group.“If these measures are not taken, we
fear that campus will only continue to become more divisive, more
volatile and more unsafe,” said Kurtz.Following the press conference,
the university told the New York Jewish Week, “Antisemitism or any other
form of hate are antithetical to Columbia’s values and can lead to acts
of harassment or violence. When this type of speech is unlawful or
violates university rules, it will not be tolerated.”A university

community safe and that includes protecting our Jewish students from

Does Israel Really Have ‘Sponge Bombs’ For Sealing Tunnels? -A portable system capable of rapidly sealing up tunnels without blowing them up would be major boon for Israeli forces operating in Gaza.byJoseph Trevithick| PUBLISHED Oct 27, 2023 1:21 PM EDT
Israeli forces are prepared to employ "sponge bombs" that produce quick-hardening foam to seal off tunnels used by terrorists in the Gaza Strip, according to a recent report. Though unconfirmed, there is some precedent for the use of devices that create hard or at least very sticky foam by military and other security forces.The Telegraph newspaper in the United Kingdom published a story about the purported Israeli foam-dispensing 'bombs' on Wednesday. It is important to note up front that, at the time of writing, the Telegraph's piece does not appear to cite any sources, on the record or anonymous, and explicitly says "the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] has not commented on the use" of these devices.As described by the Telegraph, the devices contain a binary chemical mixture that only blends together when the device is activated. The system is reportedly small and light enough to be emplaced, or even thrown, by a single individual.Israeli "soldiers were seen deploying the devices during exercises in 2021," according to the Telegraph, but no further details or imagery are provided. "The [Israeli] army has set up a mock tunnel system at the Tze’Elim army base near the border with Gaza."Tze’Elim is publicly known to host a mock Palestinian village with an underground tunnel network specifically to help prepare IDF personnel for ground operations in places like Gaza. To this point, this training site is even nicknamed "Little Gaza.""The 'sponge bomb' – technically a liquid emulsion – is hazardous to work with, and some Israeli soldiers have lost their sight through mishandling the mixture," the Telegraph reported, again without providing any substantiating information.Whether or not the IDF's sponge bombs exist or not, a device like the one the Telegraph's report describes does not seem impossible to develop. Various grades of quick-hardening and expanding foam are in widespread use in commercial construction and might be able to provide a useful seal, at least temporarily. One U.S. manufacturer of commercial urethane foam, U.S. Composites, Inc., says that its "16LB density foam is essentially as hard as a rock" and "you would need a hammer in order to make any dents in this product."Construction is, of course, a very different context from military operations in tunnels, where it would also be very important for any foam to be applied as quickly as possible. Still, a more specialized mixture could conceivably be derived from existing commercial formulations that could offer something more suitable for military use.It is also worth noting that many commercial-available chemical foams, including types not designed to harden and that are used for entertainment purposes, can cause various degrees of eye injuries. This is at least broadly in line with the mention of 'lost sight' in the Telegraph's report, which could refer to temporary or more serious losses of vision from mishandling the foam.On top of all this, there are multiple known examples of spray foams that become extremely sticky, even glue-like, being used, or at least tested, by military and security forces, including in the United States.The U.S. Marine Corps fielded devices designed to shoot streams of sticky foam as a non-lethal tool for immobilizing hostile individuals at least on a limited basis in the past. At least some Marine units sent to Somalia in the 1990s notably had this capability on hand. It is unclear whether or not this system is still in the Corps' inventory.In 2009, the U.S. Army awarded a contract for work on a similar-sounding capability to what the Marines used, which was also intended primarily to be used for non-lethal crowd control. It is unknown how far the service pursued this project. The company the Army hired to provide those systems, Adherent Technologies of Albuquerque New Mexico, claimed at the time to offer foam strong enough that it could be used to stop commercial cars and trucks in their tracks.Dispensers full of super-sticky immobilizing foam are also known to be among the defensive features found on heavily modified tractor trailer trucks that the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) uses to move nuclear weapons and other related sensitive cargoes. You can read more about these specialized trucks and their potentially James Bond-esque self-defense capabilities here.A 'bomb' full of quick hardening and expanding foam could be very useful for Israeli forces in any impending ground operations in Gaza. Hamas and other terrorist groups there make use of an extensive tunnel network that has been dubbed the "Gaza Metro."The War Zone recently highlighted the challenges tunnels pose in a larger piece on the dangers Israeli forces would face in Gaza, writing:"Tunnels give combatants a seemingly magical ability to pop up out of nowhere just to quickly disappear again. Just finding the tunnels themselves can be a huge challenge and destroying all of them in such a way they can't easily be reconstituted is another major undertaking.""Subterranean combat is extremely perilous. With movements totally restricted — a fatal funnel may be around every turn — no support from the air and limited communications, unique tactics are needed not just to succeed, but to survive when fighting in such conditions. The enemy has a massive upper hand as they know the underground layout and are prepared to capitalize on every advantage that it offers."With all this in mind, being able to rapidly seal tunnels, even just certain portions of a specific network, would reduce the total number of vectors for potential threats to flow through and otherwise limit their utility. Enemy forces might find themselves trapped within, too. Even if the foam only offers a temporary seal, it would also still suck up enemy time and resources to reopen blocked passages.There are other ways at Israel's disposal to seal tunnels in Gaza, including teams on the ground emplacing explosive charges and airstrikes. However, those means present additional risks for collateral damage, including secondary explosions from weapons and ammunition inside passages detonating following an initial blast. The "sponge bomb," at least as described, would seem to offer a more immediate and exponentially less invasive option.Regardless, of course, it remains possible that the 'sponge bomb' report is false, either in part or in full. The War Zone has previously highlighted how unsupported claims about "secret" or "unusual" military capabilities can evolve organically, as well as be fabricated deliberately, in a piece discussing still curious reports in 2017 about U.S. forces using "electricity bombs" in Syria.In this particular instance, it is perhaps interesting to note that the Telegraph's 'sponge bomb' story came out the same day as an extremely dubious and entirely unsubstantiated report from Middle East Eye claiming that the U.S. military is preparing to help Israeli forces flood Gaza's tunnels with nerve gas. A single anonymous "senior Arab source familiar with the Palestinian groups" is cited in that story, which has already been altered in its key details at least once since publication.With the information available now, The War Zone just cannot conclusively say whether or not Israeli forces actually have foam-dispensing 'bombs' to seal up tunnels. At the same time, relevant capabilities are known to exist and to have been tested and employed by military and other security forces before.If and when a major Israeli ground incision into Gaza finally comes, harder evidence of these reported foam-spewing devices, which could be very useful in temporarily neutralizing tunnel networks, may finally emerge.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — On the fifth anniversary of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, US President Joe Biden drew a straight line between the worst antisemitic attack in American history and Hamas’s deadly October 7 invasion of Israel.“A gunman opened fire on Sabbath worshippers as they prayed, murdering 11 precious souls, wounding many more – including first responders,” Biden said Friday in his statement marking October 27.“Deepening the wound, today’s remembrance comes on the heels of the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust,” Biden said. “On October 7th, a sacred Jewish holiday, the terrorist group Hamas unleashed pure evil against the people of Israel, slaughtering 1,400 Jews and taking hostage hundreds more.” October 7 was the Jewish festival of Shemini Atzeret-Simchat Torah in Israel.Biden’s weaving the two attacks, one committed by white nationalists, the other by radical Islamist terrorists, into the same cloth, marks a sharp shift from the launch of his campaign and the beginning of his presidency, when he identified the threat of antisemitism as coming principally from the far right. The gunman in Pittsburgh, who was sentenced to death this summer, was influenced by a proliferation of far-right content on social media.Biden rolled out a strategy to counter antisemitism last May, the first by any presidential administration in US history. The Israeli military ramped up airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Friday night and said it was expanding ground operations into the coastal enclave following several nights of limited raids.Internet and phone services were down across Gaza amid reports by Palestinians that Israeli ground forces including tanks were operating within the Strip and heavy exchanges of gunfire could be heard.“The Air Force is striking underground targets very significantly,” said IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.“In addition to the attacks that we carried out in recent days, ground forces are expanding their activity this evening. The IDF is acting with great force … to achieve the objectives of the war.”For the last two days, IDF infantry forces and tanks have conducted limited operations in the Gaza Strip.Hagari said the IDF will continue to strike Gaza City and surrounding areas in northern Gaza, and renewed his call for Palestinians to evacuate to the Strip’s south.“We are prepared to defend in all arenas. The Israel Defense Forces on Friday said the Hamas terror group’s main base of operations is under Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, providing visuals and intercepted audio as evidence of the terror organization’s activities.In a briefing for reporters of international media outlets, IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Hamas has several underground complexes under Shifa — the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip — that are used by the terror group’s leaders to direct attacks against Israel.Hagari said Israel has intelligence that there are several tunnels leading to the underground base from outside the hospital so that Hamas officials do not need to enter the hospital to reach it. Police and the National Cyber Directorate said Friday that Israelis should not answer WhatsApp calls coming from unknown numbers overseas, warning they could be part of a phone-hacking attempt.Police said the calls flooding Israelis’ phones were designed to cause panic and harass Israelis, warning they may also be an attempt to hack their WhatsApp accounts.At least some of the calls, which also included video calls, have come from US phone numbers.“We recommend not answering them and not calling them back,” police said.The cyber directorate noted that answering a call will not lead to a phone being hacked or damaged.It added that the issue has been reported to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company.Authorities asked that WhatsApp users set their privacy settings to hush calls from unknown numbers, block and report the numbers making the calls, and avoid clicking on links sent from unknown numbers.A number of Israeli companies have faced cyberattacks amid the war in Gaza, which was triggered by the Hamas terror group’s deadly onslaught in southern Israel three weeks ago.
