June 22 (Reuters) - Nearly 1 in 5 American adults who reported having COVID-19 in the past are still having symptoms of long COVID, according to survey data collected in the first two weeks of June, U.S. health officials said on Wednesday.Overall, 1 in 13 adults in the United States have long COVID symptoms lasting for three months or more after first contracting the disease, and which they did not have before the infection, the data showed.The data was collected from June 1-13 by the U.S. Census Bureau and analyzed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).Long COVID symptoms range from fatigue, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, cognitive difficulties, chronic pain, sensory abnormalities and muscle weakness. They can be debilitating and last for weeks or months after recovery from the initial infection.The CDC analysis also found that younger adults were more likely to have persistent symptoms than older adults.Women were also more likely to have long COVID than men, according to the study, with 9.4% of U.S. adult women reporting long COVID symptoms compared to 5.5% of men.The survey found nearly 9% of Hispanic adults have long COVID, higher than non-Hispanic white and Black adults, and more than twice the percentage of non-Hispanic Asian adults.There were also differences based on U.S states, with Kentucky and Alabama reporting the highest percentage of adults with long COVID symptoms, while Hawaii, Maryland and Virginia reported the lowest, according to the survey. CBC-Doctors urge Ontario to open 4th doses of COVID-19 vaccine to all adults-Sun, July 3, 2022 at 4:00 a.m.
Some doctors are calling on Ontario to allow all adults to get a second booster of a COVID-19 vaccine this summer, something that the province is currently limiting to only a portion of the population.Around 7.4 million Ontarians have received one booster, and nearly 90 per cent of those shots were administered at least five months ago, according to Public Health Ontario data.Studies have shown the COVID-19 boosters begin to lose some effectiveness four months after being administered, leading to growing calls for Ontario to widen eligibility for a second booster, equivalent to a fourth dose of vaccine."We know that the protection provided by those vaccines has been effective in reducing serious illness and death, but it's waning," said Dr. Nili Kaplan-Myrth, a family physician in Ottawa.Ontario is currently limiting fourth doses to people over age 60, as well as adults of any age who are Indigenous, living in long-term care, or immunocompromised. About 1.4 million people qualify, leaving roughly six million people who had a booster last winter ineligible to get another shot now.CBC News asked the Ministry of Health last week how many vaccine doses Ontario currently has in stock, but officials did not provide an answer.Next door in Quebec, all adults became eligible for fourth doses in May.The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) said last week that the provinces should offer a booster shot this fall to all people at high risk of severe disease from COVID-19 infection, regardless of how many boosters they've previously received.That recommendation applies to everyone age 65 and older. CBC-Nursing shortage to blame for Perth ER closure, says physician-Sun, July 3, 2022 at 4:00 a.m.
An emergency room physician in Perth, Ont., says he's "deeply concerned" after his community's hospital shut down the local ER Saturday morning.In a release, the Perth and Smiths Falls District hospital said a COVID-19 outbreak at its Perth site had placed "yet another burden on our fragile staffing situation."The emergency department is slated to be closed for five days and won't reopen until Thursday at the earliest.Remaining staff are being redirected to the ER at the hospital's campus in Smiths Falls, Ont., about 20 kilometres away. It continues to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the hospital said.Dr. Alan Drummond, who works at the Perth hospital, said the outbreak did not necessarily cause the closure but simply exacerbated an existing staffing shortage.The shortage of nurses began before the pandemic, Drummond told CBC Saturday, and has intensified over the last year.He said his ER has shrunk from 15 nurses to five in the last few months, with the COVID-19 outbreak causing two of the remaining five to be sidelined."The nurses here have been complaining for years that they are overworked, that there's not enough staff, that they're not supported," he said.Drummond said his department sees about 28,000 people per year, some from as far away as Peterborough, Ont. There's been an increasing amount of abuse and violence against nursing staff on a daily basis, he added, with some being sworn at, spit on and even punched.All those factors, he said, have led many nurses to leave the industry altogether."I'm just holding my breath and keeping my fingers crossed that nothing bad happens in the five days," Drummond said."Let's hope we can commit to a brighter and better future going forward, because clearly, something has to change with the way we manage our nursing staff."An 'industry-wide crisis'Last week, the hospital considered closing down the Perth ER overnight during the summer due to a lack of staff, but it quickly reversed its decision."This is a human resource shortage," said Michael Cohen, president and CEO of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital "The straw that broke the camel's back happened to be COVID illnesses amongst our staff."On Thursday, the hospital learned that several staff had come down with COVID-19, Cohen said. He said there was "no other option" than to close the ER in Perth and redirect staff to the Smiths Falls site.Cohen said it's the first time in his career he has seen full time vacancies across the organization, and for the most part, no applicants."We've been doing everything we possibly can, including bringing in agency staff, offering financial incentives and working creatively ... to try and move staff around and maximize staffing," Cohen said."And when I talked to my colleagues across the province, everybody seemed to be experiencing the same difficulty," he said. "This is an industry-wide crisis."The hospital plans to reopen the Perth site's ER on July 7 for 12 hours during the day as they begin to resume normal operations.Cohen said they won't be back to full operations until the week of July 11.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and Canada's top doctor said Thursday that it's imperative everyone eligible for a booster dose gets their third shot now before the new, more infectious Omicron variants take hold in the coming weeks.Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, said while COVID-19 case counts are currently stable, officials are bracing for a resurgence in late summer and early fall as immune-evasive variants like BA.4 and BA.5 become widespread and the country enters the respiratory virus season.Tam said the best defence against this expected wave is getting up to date with COVID-19 shots.The primary series of shots — the first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine — don't offer enough protection and a third dose is needed for all adults and for certain high-risk adolescents, she said.Government data suggests the first two shots offer little protection against an Omicron infection — "There's almost no protection," Tam said earlier this month — and data from other countries similarly suggest the primary series offers negligible levels of protection against transmission.The first two doses do offset the possibility of severe outcomes like hospitalization and death but that protection wanes substantially over time, necessitating a third dose to jump start the immune response, Tam said.Canada lags other countries in booster dose coverage-Tam said the benefits of a third dose are already well known. She said, based on data collected in April and May of this year, when Omicron activity was very high in Canada, people with a booster shot were five times less likely to be hospitalized and seven times less likely to die from the virus than the unvaccinated.Canada is lagging behind other developed countries in booster dose coverage. According to Duclos, only 60 per cent of adults who got their first two doses have gone back for a third. The rates are substantially higher in other countries like Japan and the U.K."We're behind most other G7 countries in our rate of third doses and we shouldn't be behind, we've been ahead of all those other countries with two doses. We know we have the capacity to do better and we will be doing better," Duclos said."As any physician or health expert will tell you, it's critical you go and get the shot that's waiting for you. Like the virus, immunity also evolves and Omicron has cruelly made us understand that two doses is no longer enough."Duclos said every Canadian adult should have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in the last nine months. Canadians who got a shot last summer are no longer "up to date," he said, and they need to roll up their sleeves now for a booster.To that end, Duclos said Canada will no longer call people who've had two doses "fully vaccinated." But he didn't say if the government's vaccine mandates will be adjusted to dictate people have three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.Past COVID infection doesn't offer enough protection: Tam-The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), the body of independent experts that guide Canada's vaccine policy, strongly recommends all adults get a booster dose.If a person has had a COVID infection, they should wait three months from diagnosis to get that booster dose, the committee has said.A past COVID infection doesn't offer enough protection, Tam said. She said some Canadians are under the false impression that two doses of a COVID vaccine plus a past infection offers sufficient coverage."Infection-related immunity, particularly as it relates to Omicron, could wane over time. There are many other reasons as well to get a shot," Tam said, citing the possibility that a booster dose could lower the risk of people developing long COVID symptoms.Tam said Canadians also shouldn't wait for an Omicron-specific vaccine.While major vaccine manufacturers like Moderna and Pfizer are currently developing products that are tailored to the current strain, Tam said it could be months before the product is approved by Health Canada regulators for use in this country.She also said those vaccines may not offer much more protection against Omicron than what's already available."There is still considerable uncertainty about the exact timing and availability of new formulations," said Dr. Matthew Tunis, the executive secretary to NACI. "The committee is unable to predict how the future will unfold."

A former MK known both for his extreme-right politics and for his efforts to legalize cannabis announced Sunday that he would return to Likud and seek a spot on its electoral slate after failing to enter Knesset with a party of his own.In a statement, Moshe Feiglin said he was running in the Likud primaries — expected in mid-August — to ensure Israel remains “a Jewish majority state.”Feiglin represented then-prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s party in the Knesset between 2013 and 2015, but was pushed out for his maverick attitude and extreme positions, eventually forming the right-wing libertarian Zehut party.In a statement, Feiglin claimed that Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s decision to form an ideologically diverse coalition that included the Islamist Ra’am party had turned Israel into an “state of all its Arabs.”“When the extent of the disaster became clear, I decided that the time had come to unite forces, and precisely in this difficult time to return to Likud, to strengthen the Jewish majority and return our Jewish state to us,” Feiglin said.In a Trumpian flourish, he described the uncontested results of the last election as “the biggest election fraud in our history.”Zehut was touted as the Cinderella of the April 2019 election but ended up failing to win enough support to enter the Knesset and essentially withdrew from national politics. Meanwhile, Colin's short stint as a tropical storm has come to an end, with the remnants bringing some lingering gusty winds and shower activity to the North Carolina coast Sunday. For the latest on Bonnie and Colin, read below.Tropical Storm Bonnie formed in the southern Caribbean Sea on Friday as the Atlantic's second named storm of the season. Since then, Bonnie has emerged over the Pacific Ocean through its unusual trek across the Atlantic.As of Sunday morning, Bonnie is 255 km south of Puerto San José, Guatemala, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).Conditions are favourable for Bonnie to become a hurricane by Monday, according to NHC, as intensification is forecast during the next couple of days. However, the storm has since weakened and lost its tropical storm status.As of Sunday morning, the remnants of Colin are 15 km north-northeast of New Bern, N.C., according to NHC.The remnants are expected to turn east-northeastward and accelerate soon, emerging over the Atlantic waters east of North Carolina Sunday afternoon.Maximum sustained winds are near 45 km/h with higher gusts, occurring mainly over the Atlantic waters off the North Carolina coast.Gusty winds are still possible over the North Carolina Outer Banks Sunday morning, while scattered showers and thunderstorms may impact coastal regions of the state through the morning period. Most areas will see less than 25 mm of additional rainfall.

On average, N.W.T. gets around 245 fires each year, but in 2014, the territory saw 385.The 2014 N.W.T. wildfire season was highly active and broke several records.It cost $56.1 million to fight the fires that year. That included $24 million on aircraft and around $7 million on personnel. A total of 3.4 million hectares of forest land were burned.The smoke from the fires reached North Dakota, which is over 2,000 km south. The smoke also headed east, through the Maritimes and into Portugal.During N.W.T.'s extremely aggressive fire season, no injuries or deaths were reported. However, a report of the season outlined that there is room for improvement for firefighter working conditions.The report mentions that demanding fire seasons require more personnel. The territorial government can utilize 28 five-person firefighting crews. The report suggests that the configuration should change to 36 four-person crews.The 2014 fire seasons also highlighted the need for better communication. The report shares that the government needs to improve communication with communities on the status of adjacent fires. The Agriculture Ministry on Sunday announced an Israeli locust expert made a snap visit to Sardinia to help address an outbreak of the insects on the Italian island.According to a ministry statement, the delegation led by Dr. Yoav Motro was sent at the request of Sardinian President Christian Solinas. The Israelis gave the Italians recommendations on how to deal with the locust outbreak after taking stock of the problem, which the island has been dealing with for three years.Motro described the severity of the outbreak on Sardinia as “moderate” and said his recommendations included advice on how best to use pesticides against locusts and the technology for tracking them.“Israel and Sardinia are among the only developed countries with a locust problem,” he was quoted as saying in the statement. “The combination of technology and science advances the fight against this ancient pest.”He also said the knowledge gleaned from battling the locusts could help developing countries, where the insects can cause food shortages.Along with Motro, the delegation included representatives from agricultural tech (agritech) firms like precision agriculture company ALTA Innovation.Commenting on the mission to Sardinia, Agriculture Minister Oded Forer touted Israel as a world leader in dealing with locusts and noted its role helping other countries fight outbreaks.Israel has repeatedly been forced to deal with locusts over the years, including an outbreak during a two-week period in 2021 in the southern Arava desert, according to the ministry.

AMMAN, Jordan — Jordan’s prime minister on Sunday said a number of officials had been sacked, as he blamed “negligence” for a toxic gas leak that killed at least 13 people.A tank of chlorine gas fell as it was being loaded by crane onto a ship in Jordan’s Red Sea port of Aqaba on Monday, releasing the toxic substance.At least 13 people, including five Vietnamese nationals, were killed and more than 260 others injured, according to the latest official toll.An investigation showed “great deficiency and negligence in safety measures for dealing with hazardous materials in the Aqaba port,” Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh said during a cabinet meeting.The director and other officials from the state port operator as well as the head of the maritime authority were sacked, the premier added.The gas canister’s weight far exceeded the maximum load of the crane cable bearing it, said Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya, who headed the investigation.“The container weighed about 28,900 tons, which is over three times more than the capacity of the cable of 8.6 tons, causing it to break,” Faraya told a news conference.A total of “18 containers of chlorine gas were supposed to be loaded onto the ship,” he said.“During the loading of the fifth, the cable broke and the container fell, leading to the gas leak,” he added.Faraya blamed the incident on “recklessness and negligence” at several levels, saying the port company had failed to show leadership.Jordan’s public prosecutor had on Tuesday launched an investigation into the incident, which caused the temporary closure of Aqaba’s nearby beaches.Aqaba is Jordan’s only maritime gateway and a transit point for the lion’s share of its imports and exports.
