Israel’s active coronavirus cases leaped by 500% in a month-The Times of Israel-Analysis shows renewed outbreak focused more in Arab community, less in Haredi areas; study finds compliance with distancing rules fell when restaurants were reopened-By TOI staff-july 8,20-Today, 11:49 am
Israel’s active coronavirus cases have swelled 500 percent in a single month, with infections confirmed in 262 cities and communities. The number of cases, which stood at 2,055 on June 7, reached 12,306 on July 7, the Haaretz daily reported Tuesday in an analysis of figures released by authorities. In at least 40 cities and communities, the number of confirmed new infections over the past month was more than 50.The report found that the renewed outbreak hit the country’s Arab community harder than the first wave. The most extreme case was Kafr Qasim, where there was only a single case on June 7 and 113 cases a month later — a whopping 11,200% increase. The number of infections in ultra-Orthodox areas was up as well, but the community’s adherence to the rules has rendered the outbreak there less significant than in the first wave. While 55% of patients in the first outbreak were Haredi, that has been halved in the second wave to 27%.Still, the number of active cases has grown by 410% in Bnei Brak over the last month, by 912% in Beitar Illit, and by 866% in Elad.Additionally, the rise of 1,612% in the number of cases in Ashdod and of 906% in Tiberias is focused in both cities’ ultra-Orthodox populations, the report said.Israelis at a cafe in Tel Aviv on June 16, 2020. (Miriam Alster/Flash90)-Meanwhile, a Channel 12 report on Tuesday cited research finding that Israelis started ditching social distancing and mandatory face mask-wearing rules when restaurants were opened nationwide on May 20.Compliance with the guidelines only started to rise in response to a stern address in early June by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and more so when the fine for failing to wear a mask in public was hiked on June 22, the report said, citing a study by The Center for Advanced Hindsight, headed by renowned behavioral economics expert Prof. Dan Ariely. The study found big differences between workplaces that stuck to the “purple badge” guidelines — where 71% wore masks — and those that didn’t, where only 30% wore masks. There was a direct age correlation, with younger Israelis complying less with the rules and older people adhering to them more. The last few weeks have seen the reversal of many of the gains made in the fight against the coronavirus in recent months. New daily virus cases, which had dropped to low double digits through most of May, have soared to over a thousand a day, and the number of active cases has reached an all-time high of more than 13,600.The current increase in weekly infections in Israel is one of the highest in the world, according to a chart published Monday afternoon by the Health Ministry.Police officers patrol in the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim, Jerusalem, July 6, 2020 (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-The Health Ministry on Wednesday morning released new figures showing the number of total confirmed cases in Israel since the start of the outbreak was at 32,714.The number of serious cases was up from 86 to 107 — although a change in criteria in partly responsible for that — while the number of people on ventilators rose to 36, two more than on Tuesday.Another 82 people were in moderate condition, with the rest suffering mild or no symptoms. The Health Ministry also announced one new death, bringing the toll to 343, an increase of five since Tuesday morning.Criticizing the authorities’ handling of the ongoing outbreak and describing a chaotic and ineffective approach to tackling the crisis, the director of public health in the Health Ministry announced her resignation on Tuesday. In a post on her Facebook page, Prof. Siegal Sadetzki warned that “Israel is heading to a dangerous place.”
US Jewish groups received over $500m in bailout funds. It hasn’t averted crisis-The Times of Israel-Analysis-Several organizations, such as Union for Reform Judaism, Anti-Defamation League and Orthodox Union, got in excess of $5 million in coronavirus relief; some laid off staff anyway-By Ben Sales-july 8,20-Today, 8:00 pm
JTA — More than 1,000 US Jewish organizations received federal coronavirus relief loans totaling approximately $540 million to $1.3 billion. The recipients included several organizations that laid off employees during or immediately after the loan period, suggesting that the relief legislation has not averted a financial crisis among Jewish organizations. The figures were revealed as part of a massive data dump Monday by the Trump administration, which initially released details on its small business loans between $150,000 and $10 million. The loans were made as part of the Paycheck Protection Program, which provided money for payroll and other expenses from a $660 billion relief fund.A data analysis performed partly by Jewish technologist Russel Neiss provided the figures on Jewish groups that received loans above $150,000. The amounts of loans were given in ranges of dollars rather than exact amounts.Jewish groups had organized quickly to apply for the loans, with the Jewish Federations of North America, a national umbrella fundraising body, providing guidance on the application process. Half the Jewish organizations that applied received the loans, according to the organization. A formula determined the size of each grant.A view of the crowd at the Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly, one of the biggest annual Jewish nonprofit gatherings in North America, Nov. 10, 2015. (JTA)-The loans’ main purpose was to prevent layoffs amid the current economic downturn by allowing businesses to continue paying salaries. Businesses that reduced payroll by more than 25% within eight weeks of receiving the loans were required to pay back at least part of the money. At least seven Jewish organizations received loans between $5 million and $10 million, according to the Neiss analysis. All but one are headquartered in the New York metropolitan area. They are:The Anti-Defamation League-The Orthodox Union, an umbrella Orthodox Jewish organization-The Union for Reform Judaism, an umbrella Reform Jewish organizationThe Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, a communal fundraising body-The Yeshivah of Flatbush, a New York City Jewish day school-The Abraham Joshua Heschel School, a New York City Jewish day school-United Hebrew, a home for the aged in New Rochelle, New YorkAmong the other 1,100 or so Jewish groups that received loans were hundreds of synagogues, day schools, community centers and Jewish federations. Almost half received loans under $350,000. 70 Faces Media, the parent company of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, also received a loan.Several organizations laid off employees despite receiving the loans. The Jewish Federations of North America, which was approved for a loan of between $2 million and $5 million on April 14, laid off as many as 37 staff members in early May, or about 20% of its workforce. A spokesperson for the group did not comment on the layoffs, but a fact sheet on the group’s website said the loan money can be used for severance payments and other expenses in addition to salary. Two groups that received the largest loans also had layoffs: the Orthodox Union and the Union for Reform Judaism, two denominational organizations. The URJ was approved for its loan on April 15. More than eight weeks later, on June 30 — after the loan period — it laid off 60 employees. A spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. The Orthodox Union laid off or furloughed 125 employees in early April — a quarter of its workforce. Soon after, on April 14, it was approved for the government loan of at least $5 million. The OU’s outgoing executive vice president, Allen Fagin, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in an interview last month that the organization’s revenue had dropped sharply, and that some employees’ jobs were no longer relevant in a world without in-person interaction.“As you can imagine, program fees, which had become an increasingly large part of our budget, essentially came to an end, including things like summer programs,” Fagin told JTA. “And our philanthropic income, charitable giving, has diminished substantially.”More than 2,500 teens participating in NCSY summer programs in Israel meet for one night in Ra’anana. (Photo courtesy of the Orthodox Union)-Hillel International, the umbrella body for Jewish campus centers, was approved for a loan of $2 million to $5 million on April 14. Later that month it laid off or furloughed 30 employees, about 20% of its workforce. In a statement, the organization said that “targeted reductions within our Hillel International workforce” were one of many steps it took to get through the pandemic, and that due to the loan and other fundraising, “we were able to increase retention of staff.”The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee was approved for its loan of $2 million to $5 million on April 13. On May 22, the aid group laid off 15 people in the United States and 38 overseas. Overseas payroll was not covered by the loan.“The approval of our loan on April 13 enabled us to retain these 15 valued U.S. staff members for longer than we would have been able to without the loan,” the organization said in a statement. “Had we not been granted the loan, which proved invaluable to our ability to keep our US staff employed for as long as possible, the number of those staff who ultimately would have had been laid off would unfortunately have been much higher.”oston’s Jewish federation, the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, received a loan in the same range on April 7. Following the loan period, it laid off 25 employees. The same was true of two Jewish community centers in the Bay Area, which were both approved for loans in that range in early April and laid off portions of their staffs in mid- to late-June.The relief period ended June 30. With the pandemic’s financial effects stretching into the foreseeable future, Congress appears to be preparing to offer a second round of loans later this summer, likely with tighter eligibility requirements.

Amid Iran tensions, Israel said to ask US to speed up delivery of air refuelers-The Times of Israel-With threats from Tehran following blast at nuclear facility blamed on Jerusalem, Israel reportedly wanting to receive KC-46 Pegasuses, despite design problem, within 2 years-By TOI staff and Agencies-july 8,20-Today, 1:22 pm
Israel has asked the US Department of Defense to speed up delivery of its KC-46 Pegasus aerial refueling aircraft, as tensions rise with Iran.In March the US Department of Defense announced approval to sell new KC-46 Pegasus aerial refueling aircraft to Israel, with delivery expected in four years. However, Channel 12 news reported Wednesday that Israel has requested that the aircraft be delivered within two years. The report came amid an uptick in tensions with Iran, with Tehran on Tuesday calling for action against Israel following a recent blast at the Natanz nuclear facility that has been blamed on Jerusalem. This photo released July 2, 2020, by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, shows a building after it was damaged by a fire, at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility some 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran, Iran. (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP)-Iran appeared to publicly acknowledge on Tuesday that last week’s fire at Natanz, which badly damaged a building used for producing centrifuges, was not an accident.Israeli TV reports, without naming sources, have said the blast destroyed the laboratory in which Iran developed faster centrifuges and set back the Iranian nuclear program by one or two years.Last year, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Tehran that Israel’s F-35 fighter jets can reach “anywhere in the Middle East,” following threats against Israel by senior Iranian officials. The F-35 stealth jet is not believed to have an effective range to reach Iran unassisted, but it could conduct operations there with in-air refueling.Fighter jets from the IAF’s second F-35 squadron, the Lions of the South, fly over southern Israel (IDF spokesperson)-Israel is to buy up to eight of the Boeing-built KC-46 refueling aircraft and related equipment for an estimated $2.4 billion. The multi-role aircraft makes mid-air refueling possible for fighter jets and other aircraft, but can also be used for military transport. The planes would replace the Israeli Air Force’s current fleet of aging refueling planes, which includes KC-130 Hercules and converted Boeing 707s.The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Israel’s having its own KC-46s would help back up the US military’s own, “potentially freeing US assets for use elsewhere during times of war.”The proposed sale came despite delays in the Pegasus program, with the main question about the design of its refueling function. The US Air Force has found significant problems with the KC-46’s remote vision system, essential in trying to line up and attach the refueling boom to the aircraft seeking to fill up its tanks. US Air Force Chief of Staff General David Goldfein said earlier Boeing was being pressed to address the problem.Additionally, on Tuesday the US came closer to fully approving the sale of 990 million liters of special jet fuel to Israel, to be purchased with $3 billion of US defense aid money.According to Jane’s Defense Weekly, the sale will include JP-8 aviation fuel, diesel, and unleaded gasoline, but must be approved by the US Congress before a contract can be signed.
Israeli tech firms raise $2.5 billion in Q2 amid pandemic, data shows-The Times of Israel-The second quarter figure is 13% higher than amount raised the same period a year ago, but lower than for Q1 this year, IVC data shows-By Shoshanna Solomon-july 8,20-Today, 3:57 pm
Israeli tech firms raised $2.5 billion in the second quarter of the year in 170 deals, up 13.1 percent in money terms from the same period a year earlier, but almost 9% lower than the amount raised in the first quarter of the year, as the coronavirus pandemic hit the nation.n the first quarter of the year, Israeli tech firms raised $2.74 billion in 142 deals, data presented by IVC Research Center and attorneys Zysman, Aharoni, Gayer & Co (Zag-S&W) shows. In the second quarter of 2019, Israeli tech firms raised $2.21 billion. The data indicates a “slowdown” in the ability of tech firms to raise capital, said Shmulik Zysman, founding partner of ZAG-S&W, “as everything drew to a complete halt in March” — and could be an indication of a continued downward trend for the rest of the year.Even so, he said, the figures are not as bad as feared, because even if lower, the amount of money raised in the second quarter of the year is still one of the “highest ever” posted in a quarter, he said during the first six months of 2020, Israeli tech firms raised a total of $5.25 billion in 312 deals, the data showed. Most of the investments in the quarter were follow-on deals, in which existing investors injected more funds into the startups in their portfolios to get them through the crisis.Foreign investors accounted for 52% of the investments made in the quarter, with the share of Israeli investors increasing their activities in the period. Foreign investment in Israeli tech firms has declined since the fourth quarter of 2019, to $1.58 billion in the second quarter this year from $1.8 billion in the fourth quarter of 2019.The activity of Israeli investors in the second quarter of 2020 totaled $689 million, down from $809 million in the second quarter of 2019, but up from $373 million in the first quarter of the 2020 and, the data shows.“Compared to foreign funds, Israeli venture capitalists appear to have identified opportunities and invested” in them in the quarter, said Zysman in a statement.

Unprecedented 4,200-year-old rock art etching of animal herd found in Golan tomb-The Times of Israel-ArchaeologyRock art a window into understudied ancient Levant cultureArticle in Asian Archaeology reveals forms of ancient art found in Israel’s Bronze Age burial chambers — from unique herd of horned animals to what may be a first smiley face-By Amanda Borschel-Dan-july 8,20-Today, 3:55 pm
An extremely rare example of megalithic rock art was recently identified in northern Israel’s Yehudiya Nature Reserve inside a 4,200-year-old stone burial chamber. The unique discovery of a clearly composed, artistic rendering of a herd of animals is shifting the way archaeologists think about the little-understood peoples who created the thousands of massive stone burial chambers, or dolmens, that dot northern Israel’s Golan and Galilee.“This is the first time we see this kind of rock art in dolmens in the Middle East,” said Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Uri Berger in a video accompanying the IAA press release on Wednesday. The findings were published in a scholarly article co-authored by Berger and Tel Hai College’s Prof. Gonen Sharon last week in the peer-reviewed journal Asian Archaeology. These megalithic structures were built more than 4,000 years ago. They are ancient burials and they were built by a group of people of whom the only thing we know is that they built their dolmens,” said Sharon in the video.Recently discovered inside one of the ancient stone burial chambers were six different animals carved into the rock. In the panel, one can clearly see animals in different poses, even looking at each other. On a facing wall, one can see what appears to modern eyes as three windows, complete with panes.“You can see for sure that there’s a composition… It meant something for the culture that built this dolmen,” said Berger. An illustration depicting the dolmen wall murals in the Yehudiya Nature Reserve. (Illustration: Hagit Tahan/ Israel Antiquities Authority. Photo: Yaniv Berman/ Israel Antiquities Authority)-Previous rock art etchings were discovered in 2012 inside another burial chamber in a different location in the Golan, at Kibbutz Shamir. The 2012 discovery spurred a research project to locate and document dolmen art throughout the Land of Israel that is summarized in the recent Asian Archaeology article. The Kibbutz Shamir etchings were found inside a multi-chamber dolmen that is arguably the largest in the Middle East. The etchings are of 14 unique trident-like carvings on the ceiling of a chamber built of massive basalt slabs with a capstone roof that is estimated to weigh circa 50 tons. The 25-centimeter-long tridents (9 inches) form a path that moves northeast to southwest and are the only such etched tridents that have been discovered in the Middle East. The trident dolmen rock engravings in the Shamir Dolmen Field. (Yaniv Berman)In the article, “Rock art in south Levantine dolmens,” the authors explain that little is known about the thousands of early Bronze Age dolmens found scattered across the southern Levant, mostly in Syria, northern Israel, and Jordan.“Unlike in Europe and other parts of the world, rock art has rarely been reported from Levantine dolmens, despite more than 150 years of research and hundreds of excavated dolmens of the thousands of megalithic structures recorded,” write the authors. All about dolmens-The new research project involved a survey of dozens of dolmens in the Upper Galilee and Golan “in an attempt to uncover the world of this mysterious culture that existed more than 4,000 years ago, and left behind only dolmens as evidence of their rich culture,” said Sharon in the press release.Dolmen in the Yehudiya Nature Reserve. (Amanda Borschel-Dan/Times of Israel)-Dolmens are found the world over, created by peoples spanning from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. The “Israeli” dolmens of the Golan and Hula Valley were constructed during the Intermediate Bronze Age 4,500-4,000 years ago. The authors define them as a “megalithic burial structure constructed from unhewn megastones with no cementation between them,” which are often found in clusters, or dolmen fields. For example, the Shamir Dolmen Field contains over 400 dolmens, often made of massive black basalt slabs.n the article, the researchers describe three types of rock art found in or on the dolmens: engraved panels inside two dolmen burial chambers (herd and tridents); cup-shaped depressions in “non-functional locations” on dolmen walls and ceilings; and a uniquely shaped capstone, or roof. The authors note that in addition to aesthetic and perhaps religious insight into the humans who carved the shapes, the rock art uncovered in a relatively enclosed dolmen allows for more precise dating than contemporary figures on open desert panels. “Rock art panels abundant in the Negev and Sinai are generally exposed on a rock surface that could have been used and reused over long periods of time,” write the authors. An illustration depicting the rock art panel on the ceiling of the Shamir Dolmen Field dolmen. (Illustration: Hagit Tahan/ Israel Antiquities Authority. Photo: Yaniv Berman/ Israel Antiquities Authority. In 2017, Sharon and Berger documented and analyzed the “trident” panel through 3D scanning using structured-light technology to make a 3D model. “They discovered that the forms were produced by pecking into the face of the basalt rock, possibly using a chisel or hammer/axe of stone such as flint or metal (possibly bronze). Different techniques were used to create the straight and arced lines of the forms,” write the authors.-Engraved panels: The new herd-scene dolmen-The “new” 4,000-year-old rock art was discovered on three walls of a large dolmen in northern Israel that sits prominently on an overlook ridge. They were discovered when Paula Foley, a Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel inspector, caught a glimpse of horned animals, such as mountain goats, antelopes and wild cows, carved into the wall.Researchers Uri Berger (left) of the Israel Antiquities Authority and Prof. Gonen Sharon of Tel-Hai College with the dolmen discovered in the Yehudiya Nature Reserve. (Yaniv Berman, Israel Antiquities Authority)-The 3.3 × 1.1 × 0.8 meter (11 x 3.5 x 2.5 foot) burial chamber was built using five large basalt slabs at a lower course upon which an additional three large boulders form a higher course, according to the authors. The ceiling is formed by a single basalt capstone that is 2.6 meters (8 feet) long and 1.2 meters (4 feet) wide. The engraved rock art, while visible to the naked eye, is faded. The researchers used reflectance transformation imaging (RTI) photography to enhance resolution of the forms’ shape and color to draw out the features and make positive identification. The first wall holds the herd picture of six horned animals, each of which are of different size. The authors hypothesize that the artists used differences in shape and angle of curvature of the animals’ horns to represent different species and sexes. “Two of the animals are facing each other and appear to be the same size, almost reflections of one other. Yet, a slight difference between the curvature of the horns is discernible.”Wall murals in the dolmen in the Yehudiya Nature Reserve. (Yaniv Berman/ Israel Antiquities Authority)-Opposite the herd scene, a more faded single-horned animal was discovered and was engraved in a similar artistic style, wrote the authors. On a third interior wall, the authors describe the discovery of a non-figurative motif of three crosses enclosed by rectangles (ca. 8 x 8 centimeters). The authors note that similar drawings were discovered in Negev Desert rock art, also adjacent to horned animals, as well as hunting scenes. The authors write that the horned animals in these panels “are the first reported bovine motifs in the northern, non-arid parts of Israel. Moreover, this is the first time that zoomorphic art has been discovered in the context of Levantine dolmens.”When studying the unique animal scene dolmen, the archaeologists discovered a small bronze knife made of arsenic copper, a material that corresponds to the Intermediate Bronze Age dating given to the structure.Have a cup of Joe — from the ceiling-In Europe, Asia and many locations in northern Israel, researchers have discovered cup marks in what are clearly non-functional locations on dolmen walls and ceilings. In Umm El-Kalha, for example, four dolmen cup marks were carved into the inner ceiling of the capstone “and hence in an upside-down nonfunctional position.”View from the dolmen in the Shamir Dolmen Field. (Yaniv Berman/ Israel Antiquities Authority)-While some previous scholars have hypothesized that they may have been used for rituals — even using blood — the authors write with understatement that these upside-down cup marks are challenging to interpret and should be thought of as an artistic motif.“The same holds true for cup-marks drilled perpendicular to the ground, documented on the inner and outer walls of dolmens in the Golan Heights and Galilee,” they write.Interestingly, archaeologists have discovered in many Levantine dolmens in northern Israel what appear to be two or more rows of small pits reminiscent of the board game Mancala. An ancient smiley? In the third type of dolmen rock art, researchers discerned what looks to be a face carved into the outside of a capstone. While they are extremely cautious of identifying the carving as a smiley, they write, “These lines are precisely located to fit the overall shape of the capstone and to resemble a humanlike face: the two pairs of short lines mark the eyes and the long line represents the mouth of the figure. Of course, this is one of many possible explanations for the location and meaning of these carved lines.”The human face-like rock covering the Kiryat Shemona dolmen. (Prof. Gonen Sharon/ Tel-Hai College)-The smiley was found on one of only three dolmens remain standing in the Qiryat Shemona dolmen field, which is characterized by relatively small-sized chambers. Some 25 others were excavated in a salvage operation prior to the enlargement of an industrial zone outside the city.According to the article, assuming the smiley is intentional, it may be one of a kind, which in the authors’ view supports the idea that it is rock art and not random lines. “We are also unaware of any parallel to the QSh-1 ethnographic representation of a schematic human face in the context of dolmen building stones in or outside of the Levant. The human face-like rock in an aerial view of the Kiryat Shemona dolmen. (Miki Peleg/ Israel Antiquities Authority)-The authors state that until recently, the Intermediate Bronze Age in the southern Levant has been called by archaeologists and scholars the “dark ages.” These new engravings give insight into the people of the era, and the authors are hopeful that as more dolmens in the area are excavated, we’ll gain additional windows into their world.“This art opened a window, a world beyond the stones,” said Sharon. “What were their thoughts? Their religion? It allows us to have a look into their beliefs and culture.”
New UK Labour head is flushing out anti-Semitism. Where will he stand on Israel?-/The Times of Israel-Analysis'The days of hand-wringing and hash tagging are behind us'-Looking to rehabilitate the party’s reputation for ignoring Jew-hatred under Jeremy Corbyn, Keir Starmer faces big test this month with publication of anti-racism watchdog report-By Robert Philpot-JULY 8,20-Today, 6:24 am
LONDON — Few politicians have inherited such an unenviable legacy as Sir Keir Starmer did when he became leader of Britain’s Labour Party three months ago.The party, which suffered a crushing defeat in last December’s general election, was trailing by double-digits in the opinion polls and riven by internal divisions. After being rocked by multiple allegations of anti-Semitism under outgoing leader Jeremy Corbyn, Labour was also viewed with deep distrust in the Jewish community, with much of the general population in agreement that bigotry was a systemic problem for the party.Starmer’s apparent determination to turn the page on this, the darkest aspect of the Corbyn era, was evident in his first act on taking the helm: issuing an apology to Britain’s Jews and a pledge to rebuild the community’s shattered trust. The apology, he told the BBC, wasn’t about winning votes but was a “value statement, a matter of principle.”Three days after his election, Starmer and his deputy, Angela Rayner, held a video meeting with Jewish communal organizations. The organizations’ response indicated both goodwill towards the new Labour leadership and continuing anger at Corbyn.Keir Starmer, left, with Jeremy Corbyn at the European Union headquarters in “Keir Starmer has already achieved in four days more than his predecessor.//* in four years in addressing anti-Semitism within the Labour Party,” noted a statement jointly issued by the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Jewish Leadership Council, the Community Security Trust and the Jewish Labour Movement.or Starmer, the issue is personal as well as political: His wife is from a Jewish background and the couple has extended family living in Tel Aviv.Three months on, as Labour rises in the polls and Starmer enjoys the highest approval ratings of any British opposition leader in over 25 years, observers say he is showing a willingness to match warm words on eradicating anti-Semitism with tough action.Dave Rich, head of policy at Britain’s Community Security Trust. (Courtesy CST)-“Keir Starmer has said all the right things about tackling anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, and crucially — unlike his predecessor — he has followed it up with solid and swift action,” says Dave Rich, director of policy at the Community Security Trust, which monitors anti-Semitism and protects Jewish venues and events.Joan Ryan, a former Labour MP who quit the party over anti-Semitism, agrees. Starmer’s election, she says, was “a big step forward and he has backed his words with action.”“He was right to make a profound and, I believe, sincere apology to the Jewish community and to declare his intention to tear out anti-Semitism by its roots,” Ryan says.Ex-Labour MP Joan Ryan in Jerusalem, December 15, 2019. (courtesy Sivan Farage)-Ryan also praises Starmer’s most dramatic move so far — firing Rebecca Long-Bailey from the party’s Shadow Cabinet on June 25 for sharing an article on social media which contained an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.Long-Bailey was the most senior left-winger in Labour’s frontbench team and had received the backing of many of Corbyn’s allies when she fought Starmer for the party leadership earlier this year. While hard-left MPs fumed at her dismissal, the Labour leader’s swift action was welcomed by Jewish groups and party moderates. (Long-Bailey later wrote an article explaining her position, saying that she “would never have intended to retweet or endorse anything that could cause hurt to anyone.”)The “no-nonsense decision,” suggests Nathan Yeowell, director of the center-left Progress group, may have shocked many but showed that “the Labour Party is finally prepared to take decisive action over anti-Semitism.”Jeremy Corbyn, second from left, sits with his then-advisers, former Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott, Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey, and Shadow International Trade Secretary Barry Gardiner, as he leads a meeting of the Shadow Cabinet in Salford, northwest England, on September 2, 2019. (Danny Lawson / POOL / AFP)-Commentators believe Labour may also reap some reward from the voters. “By his action, Starmer has shown he grasps that politics is painted in primary colours,” wrote Jonathan Freedland, a left-leaning Jewish columnist at The Guardian newspaper. “Most voters will barely be aware of this episode, let alone follow the nuances. If anything cuts through, it will be that the new Labour leader promised zero tolerance of anti-Semitism and he meant it.”But even before Long-Bailey’s sacking, Starmer’s efforts had begun to bear fruit. Last month, three Jewish members of the House of Lords who had resigned from Labour under Corbyn’s leadership announced they were rejoining the party. David Triesman, a general secretary of the party under former prime minister Tony Blair, said that, under Starmer, “being Jewish and Labour have been truly reconciled.”Labour insiders argue that some of Starmer’s behind-the-scenes moves are also likely to be crucial to the fight against anti-Semitism in the party. The Labour leader won an important early victory over the hard left by securing the appointment of David Evans as the party’s new general secretary. Evans, a moderate who served as assistant general secretary under Blair, took up his post last week and replaces Corbyn ally Jennie Formby. Elections to the party’s governing National Executive Committee later this year may also strengthen Starmer’s hand and see losses for the hard left.Jennie Formby at the 2016 Labour Party conference. (Wikimedia commons/Rwendland)In a further sign of his attempts to exert control over the Labour Party machine, Starmer has reportedly placed a trusted adviser into a key role overseeing the unit which handles complaints involving anti-Semitism. Amid reports of suspensions and investigations into local parties, supporters of Corbyn have accused Starmer of carrying out a “purge.”Big test this monthHowever, Jewish groups and their moderate allies in the party believe the battle against anti-Semitism is not yet complete.Much more needs to be done and in particular there is a need for broader cultural change in the party“Much more needs to be done and in particular there is a need for broader cultural change in the party to underpin these disciplinary steps,” says Rich. “But the early signs are definitely encouraging.”Many believe that a key moment for Starmer will come this month when the UK’s anti-racism watchdog, the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), delivers the findings of its probe into the party.Members of the Jewish community hold a protest against Britain’s opposition Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn and anti-Semitism in the Labour party, outside the British Houses of Parliament in central London on March 26, 2018. (AFP Photo/Tolga Akmen)“Keir Starmer has committed himself to repairing the historic relationship with the Jewish community — a relationship destroyed by the toxicity of his predecessor,” says Claudia Mendoza, chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council. “He has already taken decisive action against anti-Jewish racism in the Labour Party, but the real test will be how he implements the findings of the EHRC report and whether he is able to take the grassroots of the party with him.”The EHRC’s decision to launch a full-scale investigation into anti-Semitism in the party last summer was doubly embarrassing for Labour. The establishment of the EHRC was one of Labour’s proudest achievements when it was last in government, and the party vested it with sweeping powers. Moreover, the body has only ever launched such an investigation into one other UK political party: the far-right British National Party.Starmer has long committed to fully implement the EHRC’s recommendations and he reportedly plans to use the outcome of the investigation to introduce broad changes. Among them are likely to be an independent complaints process — long demanded by Jewish groups — so that allegations of anti-Semitism aren’t adjudicated upon by the party itself. There can be no hiding place for anti-Semites or their enabler in the Labour PartyReferring to the somewhat formulaic condemnations of anti-Semitism in the party on social media during the Corbyn era, Yeowell adds: “The days of hand-wringing and hash tagging are far behind us. I hope, and expect, that the party will pursue a policy of zero tolerance. There can be no hiding place for anti-Semites or their enabler in the Labour Party, whoever they are.”Keir Starmer, left, and Rebecca Long-Bailey of the UK Labour Party arrive at the cabinet office for Brexit talks in London, April 9, 2019. (Niklas Halle’n/AFP)-But, as their reaction to Long-Bailey’s dismissal showed, hard left MPs and activists are likely to put up a fight. Corbyn himself appeared to cast doubt on the EHRC’s impartiality last month when he suggested that the independent body was “part of the government machine.” Corbyn’s accusation was dismissed by the Labour Party, which reiterated Starmer’s pledge to abide by the watchdog’s findings.Starmer’s lopsided victory in the leadership contest — he defeated his nearest rival, Long-Bailey, by 56 to 27 percent — and his high public approval ratings give him room to maneuver. However, the hard left remain a presence at the party’s grassroots; indeed, polls suggest that more than one-third of Labour members who voted for Starmer earlier this year also approved of Corbyn’s performance as leader.-Toughening line on Israel-Notably, supporters of Israel worry that as Labour under Starmer moves against anti-Semitism, it is also toughening its stance on the Jewish state. The party has long been steadfastly opposed to the BDS movement and, even under Corbyn, its election manifestos avoided any suggestion of such a position.Last month, however, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, Lisa Nandy, called for a ban on goods entering Britain from West Bank settlements if Israel goes ahead with its planned annexation of parts of the territory.Then-Labour leadership candidate Lisa Nandy in January 2019. (YouTube screenshot)-Nandy, a former chair of Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East (LFPME), won the backing of the Jewish Labour Movement when she stood against Starmer and Long-Bailey in the leadership contest, and, at a campaign event, she described herself as a Zionist.Nandy’s call for a settlement boycott was “very disappointing” says Ryan, who opposes annexation.Anti-Semitism inside the Parliamentary Labour Party is largely driven by a visceral hatred of Israel.Michael McCann, the director of the Israel-Britain Alliance campaign group and a former Labour MP, believes “Starmer has said all the right things, but anti-Semitism inside the Parliamentary Labour Party is largely driven by a visceral hatred of Israel.”He argues that Nandy’s appointment was a “mistake” and that, in her first major intervention, she “reacted as the head of LFPME, rather than the shadow Foreign Secretary.”Illustrative: Anti-Israel activists react outside a meeting of the Labour National Executive Committee in London, September 4, 2018. (Stefan Rousseau/PA via AP)-“She will have been quietly cheered by all those in the PLP who frankly don’t believe that Israel has a right to exist, and whose contempt for the Jewish state spills over to become something even more repugnant,” he charges.“I fear that the world’s oldest hatred inside the PLP will merely travel underground,” says McCann. The campaign group We Believe In Israel immediately launched an online petition opposing Nandy’s new proposal and suggesting that “sanctions would be acceding to one of the demands of the anti-Israel BDS campaign, which is dedicated to destroying Israel through economic pressure.”The unease at Nandy’s demand was shared by the Board of Deputies, whose president, Marie van der Zyl, issued a statement urging Labour “not to go down this route.”Illustrative: Marie van der Zyl joins demonstrators at a protest against anti-Semitism within the Labour party at the UK Parliament. (Courtesy)“The tactic of BDS is divisive and seeks to strike at the very legitimacy of the State of Israel, the Middle East’s only democracy and the world’s only Jewish state,” van der Zyl wrote. But some left-wing, pro-Israel organizations in the UK have come to Nandy’s defense. Hannah Weisfeld, director of Yachad (a British version of the US lobby group J-Street), argued in a piece for the Jewish Chronicle that Labour was “well within its right to call for a ban on settlement produce.”“Far from undermining Israel, a ban that specifically targets settlements beyond the Green Line reaffirms the legitimacy of Israel inside the Green Line,” she wrote.Questioned on the Board of Deputies’ criticism, Nandy on July 2 echoed Yachad’s defense of her proposal and said she had “never supported” BDS. She also pointed to a letter sent by former Israeli Labor and Meretz MKs to Starmer backing a ban on settlement products coming into Britain.Starmer’s current focus, however, will be on events closer to home. The EHRC is believed to have delivered its findings to the party last week, triggering a 28-day period for Labour to prepare its response.Last month, Starmer told Labour members on a Zoom call: “I never want to hear the Labour Party and anti-Semitism in the same sentence ever again.”Jeremy Corbyn’s legacy as leader will ensure that, at least in the short-term, Starmer is unlikely to be granted that wish.

Brain problems linked to even mild coronavirus infections, UK study finds-The Times of Israel-Team finds acute disseminated encephalomyelitis diagnoses not linked to severity of COVID-19; survey carried out on 43 patients hospitalized in confirmed or suspected virus cases
By Patrick Galey-july 9,20-Today, 3:06 pm
PARIS (AFP) — Potentially fatal COVID-19 complications in the brain including delirium, nerve damage and stroke may be more common than initially thought, a team of British-based doctors warned Wednesday.Severe COVID-19 infections are known to put patients at risk of neurological complications, but research led by University College London suggests serious problems can occur even in individuals with mild cases of the virus. The team looked at the neurological symptoms of 43 patients hospitalized with either confirmed or suspected COVID-19.They found 10 cases of temporary brain dysfunction, 12 cases of brain inflammation, eight strokes and eight cases of nerve damage. Most of those patients with inflammation were diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) — a rare condition typically seen in children after viral infections.ILLUSTRATIVE — Ambulances are parked outside the Emergency Department of St Thomas’ Hospital, April 1, 2020 (AP Photo/Alberto Pezzali“We identified a higher than expected number of people with neurological conditions such as brain inflammation, which did not always correlate with the severity of respiratory symptoms,” said Michael Zandi, of UCL’s Queen Square Institute of Neurology and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The research, published in the journal Brain, showed that none of patients diagnosed with neurological problems had COVID-19 in their cerebrospinal fluid, suggesting that the virus did not directly attack their brains.Perhaps crucially, the team found that ADEM diagnoses “not related to the severity of the respiratory COVID-19 disease.”“Given that the disease has only been around for a matter of months, we might not yet know what long-term damage COVID-19 can cause,” said Ross Paterson from UCL’s Queen Square Institute of Neurology.“Doctors need to be aware of possible neurological effects, as early diagnosis can improve patient outcomes.”People sit and drink, outside a restaurant in Soho, London, July 4, 2020 (AP Photo/Alberto Pezzali)-With more than 11 million confirmed infections worldwide, COVID-19 is known to cause a variety of health complications in addition to lung infection. While the results of the study suggest that brain complications could be more common among virus patients than first thought, experts said it didn’t mean that brain damage cases were widespread.“The scrutiny that the pandemic attracts means it would be very unlikely that there is a large parallel pandemic of unusual brain damage linked to COVID-19,” said Anthony David, director of UCL’s Institute of Mental Health.

Analyst: Blast at enrichment site set back Iranian nuke plans by months or years-The Times of Israel-Researcher warns Iran may target Israeli nuclear reactor-Director at US-based Washington Institute writes that explosion at Natanz facility targeted advanced centrifuges, which Tehran needs to produce enough fissile material for a bomb-By Judah Ari Gross-july 9,20-Today, 4:01 pm
Iran’s ability to produce sufficient highly enriched uranium for an atomic weapon has been set back by several months to several years following a large blast at one of its central nuclear facilities earlier this month, which has widely been attributed to Israel, according to a US-based defense analyst.Simon Henderson, of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy think tank, said the alleged attack targeted an above-ground centrifuge assembly plant at the otherwise subterranean — and thus hard to attack — Natanz uranium enrichment facility.Henderson, writing on The Hill website this week, also warned that Iran may retaliate for the alleged assault on its nuclear program with an attack on Israel’s nuclear program.“The danger is that Tehran will think in terms of a ‘nuclear’ response — an attack targeting an Israeli nuclear facility such as the Dimona research reactor in southern Israel,” he wrote.View of the nuclear reactor in Dimona, southern Israel, August 13, 2016. (Moshe Shai/Flash90)-Last week, Israel’s Channel 13 reported that the country was bracing for a potential retaliation for the blast at Natanz, as well as a series of other mysterious explosions and fires at facilities throughout Iran, which many have speculated were caused by the Jewish state. Earlier this week, Channel 12 also reported that the Mossad spy agency had recently foiled planned or attempted Iranian attacks on Israeli diplomatic missions in Europe and elsewhere that were apparently in response to these incidents.Israeli officials have largely refrained from commenting on the incidents. On Sunday, Defense Minister Benny Gantz responded to a question about the matter in an Israel Radio interview, saying only that “not every event that happens in Iran is connected to us.”Henderson said Israel likely believed that Iran was restarting production of the powerful centrifuges needed to enrich sufficient quantities of uranium to manufacture a nuclear weapon.Simon Henderson of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy speaks about the keen rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran at an AIJAC event in Melbourne, Australia, September 2, 2016. (YouTube screenshot)-Centrifuges work by spinning incredibly quickly — tens of thousands of rotations per minute — which separates out the contents inside by weight. In the case of uranium, this means that the lighter uranium-235, which can be used in nuclear fission reactions, is separated from the heavier uranium-238, which can’t.Currently, Iran mostly possesses less advanced IR-1 type centrifuges, but these are not capable of enriching uranium to the level needed for a bomb. As many of its next-generation IR-2m centrifuges, which are capable of enriching uranium to weapons-grade levels, were turned offline as part of the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and have likely become unusable in the intervening years, Iran would have needed to get these machines back up and running in order to continue its alleged push to a bomb.Under the JCPOA, Iran was permitted to continue its nuclear program but only with civilian projects and with caps on the levels of enrichment and quantities of enriched uranium that it was allowed to possess. In 2018, US President Donald Trump abandoned the deal and put in place fresh economic sanctions, prompting Iran to retaliate by enriching uranium to greater levels and stockpiling more of it than the agreement permitted.“The assumption is that Iran has restarted large-scale production of the IR-2m centrifuges — or at least it had until last week,” Henderson wrote. This photo released Thursday, July 2, 2020, by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, shows a building after it was damaged by a fire, at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility some 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran, Iran. (Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP)-Once assembled, the new centrifuges would actually operate at the Natanz facility far below ground, buried deep under concrete and steel, which would make them incredibly difficult to target with a bomb. However, they were vulnerable while they were still being put together in the above-ground building that was targeted. In 2010, the United States and Israel reportedly targeted Iranian centrifuges at Natanz with a cyberattack known as Stuxnet, which caused some of them to spin incorrectly and eventually tear themselves apart.According to Henderson, an expert in energy policy, the Natanz centrifuge assembly plant was likely Iran’s only facility capable of producing the more advanced IR-2m models.“Therefore, production of IR-2ms has stopped and, from Israel’s point of view, the likelihood of Iran obtaining enough highly-enriched uranium for its first nuclear weapon has been delayed by months, perhaps even years,” he wrote.Schematics for a nuclear warhead, which were reportedly stolen by Israel’s Mossad, from a warehouse in southern Tehran and presented to the world by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv on April 30, 2018. (Prime Minister’s Office)-Iranian officials have regularly claimed that they do not seek a nuclear weapon; however these claims have largely been discounted and discredited by Tehran’s enrichment of uranium to levels beyond those needed for civilian technology, as well as by Iranian documents — stolen by Mossad in 2018 — that showed plans to connect a nuclear weapon to a missile. On Tuesday, Nour News, an Iranian website close to the country’s Supreme Council of National Security, said the building at Natanz was damaged in “a deliberate attack,” in the first apparent public acknowledgment from Tehran that the incident was not an accident. The precise method used to attack the centrifuge assembly site is not yet known, bot an unnamed Middle East intelligence official told The New York Times that a powerful bomb was used, and that Israel was behind the blast. A member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also told the newspaper that a large explosive caused the damage.Iran admitted Sunday that Natanz incurred “considerable” damage from the explosion, as satellite pictures appeared to show widespread devastation at the sensitive facility. It had previously sought to downplay the damage from the blaze, releasing only one image of the site showing a small number of scorch marks, but the emergence of satellite images showing far more destruction effectively forced Tehran to acknowledge the scope of the blast.A damaged building after a fire and explosion at Iran’s Natanz nuclear site, on July 3, 2020. (Planet Labs Inc., James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at Middlebury Institute of International Studies via AP)-The building was constructed in 2013 for the development of advanced centrifuges, though work was halted there in 2015 under the nuclear deal with world powers, Iran’s atomic agency spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said earlier this week. When the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal, the work there was renewed, Kamalvandi said. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.
DANIEL 8:23-25
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king (EU DICTATOR) of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences,(FROM THE OCCULT) shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power:(SATANS POWER) and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken without hand.
DANIEL 11:36-40
36 And the king shall do according to his will;(EU PRESIDENT) and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS A EUROPEAN JEW) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(HES A MILITARY GINIUS) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds (CONTROL HEZBOLLAH,AL-QUAIDA MURDERERS ETC) with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)
