Police opened an investigation Tuesday into an apparent hate crime targeting a Palestinian village in the southern West Bank.Residents of Tuwani, in the south Hebron Hills just west of the Israeli outpost of Havat Maon, woke up Tuesday to find 15 olive trees chopped down. Nearby, two boulders were spray-painted with the Hebrew phrases “Death to Arabs” and “Revenge.” Another boulder was graffitied with a red Star of David.The incident was the first suspected hate crime since the Shin Bet security service confirmed on Sunday that it had arrested five Jewish teens suspected of involvement in the murder of Aisha Rabi, 47, a Palestinian mother of eight who was traveling in a car with her husband and daughter near the northern West Bank’s Tapuah Junction late at night on October 12 when a large stone crashed through the windshield and struck her in the head.Last week, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs released statistics ahead of the new year that showed a 69 percent increase in settler attacks on Palestinians in 2018 compared to 2017.OCHA recorded 265 incidents in which Israeli residents of the West Bank allegedly targeted Palestinians or their property. Police opened an investigation Tuesday into an apparent hate crime targeting a Palestinian village in the southern West Bank.Residents of Tuwani, in the south Hebron Hills just west of the Israeli outpost of Havat Maon, woke up Tuesday to find 15 olive trees chopped down. Nearby, two boulders were spray-painted with the Hebrew phrases “Death to Arabs” and “Revenge.” Another boulder was graffitied with a red Star of David.The incident was the first suspected hate crime since the Shin Bet security service confirmed on Sunday that it had arrested five Jewish teens suspected of involvement in the murder of Aisha Rabi, 47, a Palestinian mother of eight who was traveling in a car with her husband and daughter near the northern West Bank’s Tapuah Junction late at night on October 12 when a large stone crashed through the windshield and struck her in the head.Last week, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs released statistics ahead of the new year that showed a 69 percent increase in settler attacks on Palestinians in 2018 compared to 2017.OCHA recorded 265 incidents in which Israeli residents of the West Bank allegedly targeted Palestinians or their property. The Palestinian Authority’s withdrawal of its employees from the Rafah crossing constitutes the first of a number of measures it will take to end Hamas’s control over the Gaza Strip, Azzam al-Ahmad, a top Palestine Liberation Organization and Fatah official, said late Monday.On Sunday, PA employees pulled out of the Rafah crossing at the border between Egypt and Gaza, putting its regular operation at risk.Egyptian authorities have not said if they will allow the sole crossing between Egypt and Gaza to remain open on a regular basis without PA employees present. On Tuesday, however, they only allowed Palestinians returning to the Strip to use the passageway.“The withdrawal of the workers at the Rafah crossing is the beginning,” Ahmad, who holds the title of Fatah Central Committee member, told Palestine TV, the official PA channel. “There will be other measures… to annihilate the authority of division and status quo.”Fatah officials frequently refer to Hamas as the “authority of division and status quo.”Ahmad said that the additional measures the PA was considering include cutting funding it allocates to Gaza.“Infrastructure… education, environment, sewage and water. As Israel lobbies the US to recognize its sovereignty over the Golan Heights, Jordan’s foreign minister on Tuesday presented his visiting American counterpart with an opposing view of the matter.“International law regarding the Golan Heights is clear,” Ayman Safadi told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Amman. “Israel must withdraw from the region as part of a deal that will allow the rights of all sides to be maintained,” he said.On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged visiting US National Security Adviser John Bolton to recognize Israel’s claim to the Golan.Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981, in a move not recognized by the international community. In light of the civil war in Syria, Israel has in recent years stepped up its calls on friendly governments to recognize that it will never return the strategically important territory to the Assad regime. However, no allied country has done so.During his meeting with Pompeo, Safadi said that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was the region’s central problem. Dozens of politicians have expressed concerns about safety after Conservative MP Anna Soubry on Monday faced chants of “Soubry is a Nazi” from pro-Brexit protesters during an interview with the BBC outside London’s parliament.Sky News anchor Kay Burley posted a video on Twitter in which loud chants can be heard while she also interviewed Soubry on Monday.Burley wrote in a later tweet that she now requires a security escort to work, before listing some of the abusive comments she receives.
