Israel has retained its spot as the 11th happiest country in the world for the fifth year running, according to the United Nations’ annual “World Happiness Report,” published Wednesday.The Palestinian Territories came in 104th place, Lebanon in 88th, Jordan in 90th and Syria in 150th in the listing of 156 countries.The report, which also for the first time evaluated 117 countries by the happiness and well-being of their immigrants, notes that Jews who immigrated to Israel from the former Soviet Union have much better lives than before they immigrated, even though they still have problems. It ranks Israel 12th on its list for “happiness for the foreign born.”However, it also places Israel, which turns 70 in May, among the countries that are less tolerant of migrants, and that do not accept migrants openly.Israel’s overall No. 11 position was helped by its health system; the report placed the Jewish state in sixth position for improvement in life expectancy, after Japan, Iceland, Italy, Switzerland and Canada.World Happiness Index 2018 (World Happiness Report)-In the US, by contrast, life expectancy was 4.3 lower than the average of these top five countries, and that gap “likely widened further in 2016 in view of the absolute decline in US life expectancy.”On tolerance towards newcomers, the document found that while the least accepting countries were those in Europe that have been directly affected by the recent migrant crisis, four were in the Middle East and North Africa — among them Israel, Egypt, Iraq and Jordan. A Hamas official said Wednesday that the terror group knows the identities of perpetrators of the attempted assassination of Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in Gaza a day prior.“The interior ministry in Gaza has the names and other information of those linked to the bombing of the prime minister’s convoy,” Gaza’s deputy interior minister Tawfiq Abu Naim told Palestinian local media outlets.Though he did not reveal the identity of the suspects, Abu Naim fingered Israel, saying the “occupation is the one beneficiary” of the attempted hit.Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh phoned Hamdallah hours after the explosion and issued a statement claiming the two had agreed to “blame Israel and its collaborators” for being behind the explosion. But Yusef al Mahmoud, spokesperson for the PA government, later denied that Hamdallah had received any phone call from Haniyeh, and the PA has said it holds Hamas responsible for the attack since it rules Gaza.The Hamas Interior Ministry in Gaza said it had launched a “high-level investigative committee” into the bomb attack, which was a further blow to faltering reconciliation talks between Hamas and president Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party.It said a number of suspects were being questioned after the roadside bomb targeted Hamdallah’s convoy shortly after he entered Gaza, leaving him uninjured but lightly wounding six guards.“The door is open to anyone who wants to participate in the investigation,” said Abu Naim in an earlier statement.A minister in Hamdallah’s government told Voice of Palestine radio that Hamas informed them there were two 33-pound bombs, the second of which was planted 33 yards away but failed to explode.A senior Palestinian official told the Ynet news site that Hamas had arrested several employees of a pair of cellular companies, who the terror group suspects allowed the bomb planters to use their services in order to communicate.The source added that a cell phone of one of the companies was used to detonate the explosives. TORONTO — Accused serial killer Bruce McArthur appeared briefly via video in a Toronto court Wednesday before his case was put over to next month.The 66-year-old self-employed landscaper is charged with the first-degree murder of six men who had ties to the city's LGBTQ community.McArthur appeared via video from a Toronto jail, wearing an orange jumpsuit, and spoke only to say his name during the hearing that lasted a few minutes. The case was put over to April 11.McArthur was arrested in January and charged with the murders of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen, who went missing from Toronto's gay village in 2017.Later that month, McArthur was charged with the first-degree murder of Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, and Dean Lisowick. In February, he was also charged in the death of Skandaraj Navaratnam.Jeff Tunney, who knew Lisowick, was at Wednesday's hearing, saying he wanted to attend all of McArthur's court appearances."I feel bad because you're supposed to watch out for your friend and I obviously didn't do a good job on this one," he said. "You try not to blame yourself, but there's always this little bit of what if, maybe if I did this or did that, maybe he wouldn't be where he is today."Tunney said he had lived with Lisowick for a period of time in 2016 and noted that his friend, who police have said had no fixed address, bounced between shelters. Police have said Lisowick was never reported missing.Police have recovered the dismembered remains of seven people from planters found at a home in midtown Toronto where McArthur worked and stored equipment. Declaring enough is enough, tens of thousands of young people from Maine to Alaska walked out of school to demand action on gun violence Wednesday in one of the biggest student protests since the Vietnam era.Braving snow in New England and threats of school discipline in places like Georgia and Ohio, they carried signs with messages such as "Am I next?," railed against the National Rifle Association and bowed their heads in memory of the 17 dead in the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida."We're sick of it," said Maxwell Nardi, a senior at Douglas S. Freeman High School in Henrico, Virginia, just outside Richmond. "We're going to keep fighting, and we're not going to stop until Congress finally makes resolute changes."Around the nation, students left class at 10 a.m. local time for at least 17 minutes — one minute for each of the dead in Florida. Protests over living conditions are not uncommon but Wednesday's clashes, which a police spokesman said broke out after a group of about 50 people set fire to garbage bins, are among the most serious in months.A local news website said the violence was sparked by the attempted suicide of a Syrian man in the camp on Monday and said police used tear gas and flash grenades to disperse the crowd.A police official confirmed to Reuters that riot police had to intervene but would not comment on the reported use of tear gas and flash grenades.MSF posted on Twitter that it had provided medical aid."Our team treated eleven people, among them small babies and pregnant women after clashes between #refugees and #Greek police. 200 women and children were evacuated to a nearby warehouse," it said."The situation is calmer, but #Moria continues to be an awful place to live."Lesbos was the gateway to Europe in 2015 for nearly a million refugees and migrants, mostly fleeing Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. BEIRUT — Turkish forces shelled the Kurdish-held northern Syrian town of Afrin on Wednesday killing at least seven people, Kurdish forces reported, as government shelling and airstrikes killed at least 20 civilians in the besieged eastern Ghouta enclave near the capital Damascus, activists said.Shells slammed into the heart of Afrin at dusk at intervals just second apart, forcing residents to rush for cover, according to video published by the People's Protection Units, known as the YPG. The group is being targeted by Turkey as a threat to its national security.A resident reported a worsening bread shortage as tens of thousands of civilians have flocked to the town seeking relief from the advancing forces, shelling, and airstrikes. Azad Mohamed said he waited in line at Afrin's only bakery for eight hours for a few loaves of bread. He said some residents were being turned away without any.Afrin is already suffering from water and power shortages after Turkish forces cut supplies from the countryside, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The bombing Wednesday focused on the south.Two dozen civilians in need of medical care were evacuated from eastern Ghouta, the latest trickle of urgent cases to leave the area amid an ongoing military offensive as government forces advance.Local authorities in Harasta, one of the towns in eastern Ghouta, meanwhile, said they have been cut off from the rest of the rebel-held enclave, isolating 20,000 residents with no access to medical aid or supplies.A spokesman for a medical charity said the isolation meant that Harasta and another cut-off pocket have not been able to send patients out in the evacuation.A list of least 1,034 patients, including 72 urgent cases, for evacuation from eastern Ghouta has been drawn up, said Mohamad Katoub, of the Syrian American Medical Society, which oversees a number of medical facilities there.The evacuation is part of a deal negotiated by the United Nations to allow urgent medical cases to leave the rebel-held enclave to government-held Damascus for treatment. About 150 patients and their families left the enclave on Tuesday.Government forces have recently split the enclave in two and cut off the towns of Douma and Harasta after their offensive intensified in February. Opposition activists say more than 1,100 civilians have been killed since mid-February.On Wednesday, activists reported continued bombings of the enclave. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Syrian Civil Defence first responders, known as White Helmets, said Kfar Batna, a town in the southwestern corner of the enclave was particularly heavily bombed since Tuesday.A video by the White Helmets shows rescuers rushing to a neighbourhood in the town, scrambling to find survivors and unable to pick up the dead amid continuing bombing. A couple of women emerge from a cloud of smoke, walking over a pile of debris to get to the rescuers.Meanwhile, Syrian state-run TV broadcast footage of the patients exiting eastern Ghouta. In the footage, about a dozen residents, mostly women and children, many looking haggard and carrying a few belongings, are seen walking out of the enclave through the corridor manned by Syrian soldiers that links between the rebel-held enclave and Damascus. At least two ambulances and a bus brought patients and their families to the area. The broadcaster said 25 people were evacuated.One resident told the state-run TV that he was happy to get out of eastern Ghouta safely. "I hope all people manage to get out. They all wish to get out. But they (rebel fighters) are not letting them out," the unnamed resident said. "It is not up to us. It is up to them."There is an estimated 400,000 residents trapped in eastern Ghouta.Despite a U.N. cease-fire, the government's military offensive continued against the region, only miles from the Syrian capital and in rebel hands since 2012. Russia ordered a daily humanitarian pause late last month, but almost no left during the breaks. LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is to kick out 23 Russian diplomats, the biggest such expulsion since the Cold War, over a chemical attack on a former Russian double agent in England that Prime Minister Theresa May blamed on Moscow, an assessment backed by the United States.May pointed the finger firmly at Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday as she outlined retaliatory measures in parliament.Russia denies any involvement in the attack on ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, who have been critical in hospital since they were found unconscious on March 4 on a bench in the city of Salisbury.May announced the potential freezing of Russian state assets that pose a security threat, new laws to counter hostile state activity and a downgrading of Britain's attendance at the soccer World Cup in Russia this summer.She had given Moscow until midnight on Tuesday to explain how the Soviet-made Novichok nerve agent came to be deployed on the streets of Salisbury, saying either the Russian state was responsible or had lost control of a stock of the substance."Their response demonstrated complete disdain for the gravity of these events," May said in her statement to parliament. BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Two people have been sentenced to federal prison for their involvement in a conspiracy to buy and smuggle from Mexico into the U.S. a grenade launcher and three semi-automatic rifles.U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera in Brownsville gave 38-year-old Dulce Maria Rippstine of San Juan a 37-month term Wednesday and 57-year-old Juan Martin Segura-Olvera of Reynosa, Mexico, 50 months after they pleaded guilty last year to a conspiracy charge.Federal prosecutors say Segura-Olvera, who is not a U.S. citizen, faces deportation following his imprisonment.Evidence showed they were among several people who found the weapons in Mexico and were arrested after negotiating in February 2017 with undercover agents posing as black market arms dealers.Two others convicted in the case were sentenced last year.The Associated Press.

In his first public comment on Mike Pompeo’s appointment as US Secretary of State, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that he has been “very impressed” by the former congressman, who is currently heading the CIA.“During my meetings with Pompeo, I was very impressed with his abilities and experience. His hardline positions on Iran are nearly identical to those of Trump and Netanyahu, who argue that the 2015 landmark nuclear agreement between Tehran and six world powers need to be significantly improved or abrogated entirely.Pompeo indicated in late 2014, before the deal was signed, that he believed military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities would more effectively thwart Tehran’s quest for atomic bombs than diplomacy.“Iran, the world’s largest state sponsor of terror, has become an even more emboldened and disruptive player in the Middle East,” he said at his Senate confirmation hearing in January 2017.During his time at Foggy Bottom, Tillerson did not play a role in the administration’s Middle East policy, while Pompeo is known as a staunch supporter of the Jewish state and may seek to get involved in White House’s effort to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. Tillerson’s decision to skip Israel during a trip to Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon earlier this year was seen by some as a snub of the Jewish State.In contrast to Tillerson, who had never been to Israel before he accompanied Trump during his May 2017 visit, Pompeo visited as a congressman in 2015, receiving security briefings and visiting the Western Wall.“Netanyahu’s efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons are incredibly admirable and deeply appreciated,” he said after meeting the prime minister then.He also praised Israelis’ “admirable restraint in the face of unspeakably cruel attacks,” referring to a spate of Palestinian terror attacks, many of them carried out with knives, which were at their peak at the time.The US needs to “stand with our ally Israel and put a stop to terrorism,” he said. “Ongoing attacks by the Palestinians serve only to distance the prospect of peace.”
