An Israeli man was lightly wounded in a car-ramming attack near the Gush Etzion Junction in the West Bank on Wednesday, the army said.The driver of the vehicle was shot and fatally wounded by IDF troops who were on the scene, a military spokesperson said.A spokesperson for Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center said the Palestinian assailant was brought to the hospital in critical condition after receiving treatment on the scene by military medics.He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving to the hospital, an army spokesperson said.The assailant was later identified as Sahib Mousa Mashahrah, 21, from nearby al-Sawahreh, according to the Palestinian Maan news agency.Medics from the Magen David Adom ambulance service treated the injured Israeli man, who suffered a head wound after being hit by the car as it plowed into a bus.The victim was conscious, “but disoriented” after the attack, a medic said.According to MDA, the victim was approximately 60 years old. He too received treatment on the scene before being taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment.The Gush Etzion Junction has been the site of multiple attacks against both civilians and soldiers in the past two years.Earlier this month, an IDF soldier Sgt. Days after the only functioning power station in the Gaza Strip stopped working after running out of fuel, the United Nations envoy to the region called on Palestinian leaders to put aside their internal squabbles and solve the energy crisis in the coastal enclave.In a statement Wednesday, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov also urged Israel to allow into Gaza material and equipment needed to repair and maintain the Strip’s electricity infrastructure, and pleaded for the international community to help rehabilitate power supplies.“The social, economic and political consequences of this impending energy crisis should not be underestimated,” Mladenov said. “Palestinians in Gaza, who live in a protracted humanitarian crisis, can no longer be held hostage by disagreements, divisions and closures.”On Sunday Samir Metir, the head of the Hamas-run Palestinian enclave’s electricity provider, said that all the plant’s fuel, purchased with funding from Qatar and Turkey, had been used up.He said at the time it was not clear when the Palestinian territory would receive more, owing to a “dispute” between the electricity authority in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.Fuel supply for the Strip’s two million inhabitants has been a long-running source of dispute, with most homes in Gaza receiving two eight-hour periods of electricity a day even when the plant is operating normally.“Reform of the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company (GEDCO) is essential to improve revenue collection and transparency in line with international standards,” UN envoy Mladenov declared. “The de facto authorities in Gaza must ensure that collection rates are improved and that revenue collected in Gaza is returned to the legitimate Palestinian authorities in order to keep fuel and electricity supply flowing. The Palestinian man who stabbed to death a British woman in a terror attack in Jerusalem on Friday is fit to stand trial, a psychiatrist for the Jerusalem district branch of the State Prosecutor’s Office determined Tuesday.East Jerusalem resident Jamil Tamimi killed Hannah Bladon, 20, an exchange student from Birmingham University who was on a study program at the Hebrew University, as she rode on the Jerusalem Light Rail in the capital.Tamimi, 57, who has a history of mental problems, was given a psychiatric assessment in light of his past, which included treatment at the Kfar Shaul Mental Health Center and an attempt to commit suicide.The test was ordered by a Jerusalem court, where Tamimi was remanded into custody on Monday.Israeli TV reported Saturday that Bladon was standing by the exit doors of the train, near to Tamimi, because she had given up her seat to a woman who was holding a baby.Tamimi told investigators that he attacked her because he wanted to die and hoped the soldier who was standing next to her on the train would kill him, Channel 2 reported, describing the killing as “an attempted suicide attack.”Tamimi was on his way from a mental hospital in northern Israel when he carried out the stabbing. Deputy Minister Michael Oren declared Tuesday that the biggest winners of the 1967 Six Day War were the Palestinian people.Speaking at an event in Jerusalem marking 50 years since the conflict, he contended that before 1967, the concept of a “Palestinian” did not exist as we now know it.Oren, now deputy minister for diplomacy in the Prime Minister’s Office, spoke more as a historian than a parliamentarian at the event, which was organized by The Israel Project and took place at the headquarters of the Jerusalem Institute for Policy Research.His comments drew on research he completed for his seminal 2002 book, “Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East.”He remained mostly mum on the issue of where the peace process with the Palestinians stands today.“We are in a process, but I can’t speak too much about that,” said Oren, a former Israeli ambassador to the United States.The current efforts, which he said must be undertaken in tight collaboration with the US administration, “may not create two states, but make a diplomatic solution.”To many, the 50th anniversary of Israel’s victory in the Six Day War is a bittersweet one. Fumes from the explosion were still lingering over Stockholm city centre, when another war broke out - this time, online.The Swedish far-right swiftly responded to the terror attack of Friday (7 April) by laying the blame with the country's largest parties - the ruling Social Democrats and the centre-right Moderates that preceded them - whose migration policies had brought Muslims into the country.Some of the accusations, which quickly spread through social media, were illustrated with pictures of the victims. One showed the ravaged body of an 11 year old girl; her family asked in vain for the photographs to be taken down.Others suggested that the attack, for which an Uzbek with Islamist sympathies has been arrested, was a "false flag" operation orchestrated by Swedish authorities.A widely circulated conspiracy relied on details that were later tracked down to be the result of sloppy reporting by the Daily Mail, a British tabloid.A racist news website, Avpixlat, published a picture of another Uzbek, claiming he was the terrorist.Lies were also spread by politicians from the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD), the third largest party in Sweden.SD party secretary Richard Jomshof tweeted an edited image that claimed a priest had asked people to "forgive the terrorist". Jomshof eventually deleted the message but said that it didn't matter if it was fake, "the basic matter is the same".When Stockholm responded to the attack with the largest rally ever held in the Swedish capital, where thousands of people formed a human chain around the terror site, right-wingers started to lambaste them too."Something is really wrong with the Swedish people. They should be furious, instead they are thirsty for love," one far-right journalist complained.On the other side, there are also those spreading messages of solidarity and support in the comment fields of media and Facebook."Hate spreads hate, so spread love," one woman wrote in reply to some remarks on the Facebook page of a Swedish newspaper, adding a heart."You're doing exactly what the terrorists wanted - you sow hate and fear," another added.Others ended their posts with the hashtag #jagärhär, or #iamhere.-A love mob against racism-#Jagärhär is a closed group on Facebook created last May by Mina Dennert, a Swedish journalist with roots in the Middle East."We are not an opinion mob. Our success is not necessarily measured as getting others to change their views. Rather, the purpose of the group is to allow more people to make themselves heard and to facilitate good discussions without hate and threats," the group rules say.The group doesn't tell people what to write; it's up to everyone to formulate a message.After the terror attack, which marked the start of a particularly busy time for anti-hate netizens, the group managed to get many racist comments deleted, including some that were illustrated by pictures of the 11 year-old victim.The love mob also backed up politicians and other people who suffered the wrath of racism."Am I allowed to write here? I just wanted to thank all the kind people who went to my Facebook page," wrote Magnus Betner, a comedian known for poking fun at racism, whose social media profile was covered in venom in the wake of the attack."I knew exactly what would happen and didn't feel like spending the weekend replying to criticism from people who refuse to listen, so I just didn't enter my page. A large asteroid discovered three years ago whizzed past Earth today, but there's no need to panic.The asteroid — named 2014 JO25 — ranged between more than 700 metres and 1.4 kilometres across. At its closest, the asteroid passed roughly 1.8 million kilometres from Earth — or more than four times the distance from Earth to the moon.Early radar images obtained by NASA showed the asteroid had two lobes, with the largest one measuring about 620 metres across.The asteroid was discovered in May 2014 as part of the Catalina Sky Survey near Tuscon, Ariz. Out of 135 asylum seekers intercepted by RCMP while crossing into Canada on foot near Emerson in a recent one-month stretch, three were detained because they were found to be a danger to the public, Canadian Border Service Agency officials say.The union representing border patrol officers raised concerns about public safety last week, saying nearly half of the asylum seekers entering at Emerson in the last few weeks have some criminality in their backgrounds.One, who was being sent to a cell for detention, allegedly assaulted a female officer on April 8. Ahmed Aden Ali, who came to Canada via Minneapolis, was charged with two counts of uttering threats, mischief over $5,000 and assaulting a police officer.The 135 asylum seekers who were recently intercepted were found from March 20 to April 16.Border services officials said they didn't know whether the three people who were detained are still in custody. They may have been released by the Immigration Refugee Board on a promise to appear before the board for a removal hearing at a later date.People can only be detained at the border for three reasons: They're a danger to the public, they're unlikely to appear for a removal hearing, or their identity can't be determined.The Canadian Border Services Agency does not keep statistics on asylum seekers who have a criminal record or have been charged with a crime but have not been detained.Someone can be deemed "criminally inadmissible" to apply for refugee status in Canada but may still be released into the country on a promise to appear at a future removal hearing.

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - U.N. judges on Wednesday rejected a Ukrainian request to order Russia to stop supporting separatist forces in eastern Ukraine, saying it did not meet requirements under an international terrorism treaty.Pro-Russian forces rose up in Ukraine's east in 2014 after a popular uprising centred in the capital Kiev toppled the former Soviet republic's Moscow-backed president.Ukraine asked the International Court of Justice last month to order Russia to stop backing forces in the conflict, arguing Moscow was violating a global treaty on terrorism financing and another international pact on discrimination.The ICJ, which handles disputes between states, ruled that Ukraine had not presented sufficient evidence on the question of whether Moscow knew or intended that any alleged funds collected would be used to commit terrorist acts on Ukrainian soil.The ruling was interim and does not mean the court has no jurisdiction in Ukraine’s allegation that Russia has funded terrorism. The strike drew condemnation from some prominent figures, including former Afghan president Hamid Karzai and Afghanistan's ambassador to Pakistan.After arriving at the site the day after the strike, U.S. troops, who are fighting alongside Afghan forces, have since left but continue to conduct operations in the area, said U.S military spokesman Captain William Salvin."Access has been restricted but that's because it’s a combat zone," he told Reuters. RIYADH (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday that Iran was playing a destabilizing role in the Middle East but its influence would have to be overcome to bring about an end to the conflict in Yemen.At least 10,000 people have been killed and more than 3 million displaced in the war in Yemen, now in its third year. Millions of people are also struggling to feed themselves."Everywhere you look if there is trouble in the region, you find Iran," Mattis told reporters in Riyadh after meeting senior Saudi officials."We will have to overcome Iran's efforts to destabilize yet another country and create another militia in their image of Lebanese Hezbollah, but the bottom line is we are on the right path for it," Mattis added.Officials have said the United States is considering deepening its role in the conflict in Yemen by more directly assisting its Gulf allies, who are fighting Iranian-supported Houthi rebels there.U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity said the situation in Yemen came up in their meetings with Saudi officials, including with King Salman and Deputy Crown Prince and Minister of Defense Mohammed bin Salman.Officials said U.S. support for the Saudi-led coalition was discussed including what more assistance the United States could provide, including intelligence support.The Iran-aligned Houthis control the Yemeni capital Sanaa and large swathes of territory. TOKYO — From two continents, top Trump administration officials warned Tuesday that North Korea's latest failed missile launch was a reckless act of provocation and assured allies in Asia that the United States was ready to work to achieve a peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.While Defence Secretary Jim Mattis denounced North Korea's weapons test as he began a Mideast tour, Vice-President Mike Pence offered support to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo amid a trip dominated by concerns about the rogue state's nuclear intentions."We appreciate the challenging times in which the people of Japan live with increasing provocations from across the Sea of Japan," Pence said after arriving from Seoul for talks with Abe. "We are with you 100 per cent ."At the outset of their meeting, Pence reiterated to Abe his statement in South Korea that the United States has run out of patience with Pyongyang's moves."While all options are on the table," Pence said, "President Trump is determined to work closely with Japan, with South Korea, with all our allies in the region, and with China" to resolve the problem."We seek peace always as a country, as does Japan, but as you know and the United States knows, peace comes through strength and we will stand strongly with Japan and strongly with our allies for a peace and security in this region," Pence added.Said Abe: "It goes without saying that it is a matter of paramount importance for us to seek diplomatic efforts as well peaceable settlements of the issue.""But at the same time," the prime minister said, "dialogue for the sake of dialogue is valueless and it is necessary for us to exercise pressure North Korea so that it comes forward and engages in this serious dialogue."Mattis struck an even tougher tone on North Korea in an interview with reporters travelling with him to Saudi Arabia. His language was stronger than in a written statement he issued shortly after the launch, in which he simply said he was aware of the failure."The leader of North Korea again recklessly tried to provoke something by launching a missile," he said. The term "reckless" is one the North Koreans have used to describe ongoing large-scale U.S. and South Korean military exercises, which the North calls a dress rehearsal for an invasion.Mattis did not identify the type of missile but said it was not of intercontinental range, meaning it could not reach U.S. territory. He did not comment on what might have caused the missile to fail.Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an intelligence matter, said the missile was a Scud variant that the U.S. calls a KN-17.Mattis credited China with trying to help get the North Korea situation "under control" with the goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.President Donald Trump in Washington and Pence at the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea have signalled a forceful U.S. stance on North Korea's recent actions.
