Bernie Sanders exacerbated his shockingly under-informed address on Israel from late last month with an interview to the New York Daily News this week in which he casually traduced Israel.In his March speech — which he said he would have delivered at AIPAC’s Washington policy conference if only they’d let him read it out over satellite — he demanded that Israel remove its blockade from Gaza while simultaneously professing to support Israelis’ “right to live in peace and security.” Needless to say — or rather, evidently, needful to say to Sanders — backing Israelis’ right to live in peace and security entails working to ensure that terrorist groups committed to Israel’s destruction are not allowed to import the weaponry they need to achieve that goal. Demanding that Israel end the Gaza blockade is tantamount to demanding that Hamas be enabled to freely bring in rockets, missiles and all manner of other military equipment to expedite Israel’s demise. Only a politician who supports Hamas — such as Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan — or one with a grossly inadequate understanding of Israel and its challenges could possibly endorse such a position.In his New York Daily News interview, Sanders dismally reconfirmed that he falls into the latter category. The would-be president castigated Israel for an ostensibly “indiscriminate” war on Gaza in the summer of 2014, and, while admitting that he didn’t really know the facts, asserted, twice, that Israel killed over 10,000 innocent civilians in the course of that conflict.Over 10,000 innocent civilians? SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea can mount a nuclear warhead on a medium-range missile, a South Korean official said on Tuesday in a new assessment of the capability of a country that conducted its fourth nuclear test this year."We believe they have accomplished miniaturization of a nuclear warhead to mount it on a Rodong missile," said the South Korean official, who has knowledge of South Korea's assessment of the North’s nuclear program. The official spoke to a small group of reporters on condition of anonymity.North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said last month that his country had miniaturized nuclear warheads to mount on ballistic missiles. It was his first direct statement of a claim often made in state media though never independently verified.The Rodong missile can fire a 1 tonne (1,100 lb) warhead a distance of up to 2,000 km (1,250 miles), the official said. That would put all of South Korea, most of Japan and parts of Russia and China in range."We believe they have the ability to mount a nuclear warhead on a Rodong. Whether they will fire it like that is a political decision," said the official.There was no direct evidence that the North has successfully mounted a warhead on such a missile, the South Korean official said, declining to discuss the basis for the change in assessment.The United States, South Korea's staunch ally, concurred."We know that they've said they have that capability, and we have to take them at their word," Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said at a briefing for reporters on Tuesday. MOSCOW (AP) — The National Guard being formed in Russia will be given broad powers to suppress riots, according to a presidential decree released Wednesday.Analysts said President Vladimir Putin's decision to create the National Guard could reflect Kremlin fears of possible anti-government protests — or even a coup attempt — amid an economic downturn. The Russian economy last year was dragged into recession by plummeting oil prices and Western economic sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine.Putin's popularity has remained high, but living standards have dropped sharply and the prospect of unrest looms. Parliamentary elections set for September will test the Kremlin's ability to maintain a tight grip on political life.Putin announced the creation of the National Guard on Tuesday, when he said it would focus on the fight against terrorism and organized crime.Putin appointed his former chief bodyguard, Viktor Zolotov, to oversee the force. BEIJING (Reuters) - China has begun operating a lighthouse on one of its artificial islands in the South China Sea near where a U.S. warship sailed last year to challenge China's territorial claims.China claims most of the energy-rich waters of the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. But neighbors Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.China's transport ministry held a "completion ceremony", marking the start of operations of the 55-metre (180-ft) high lighthouse on Subi Reef, where construction began in October, state news agency Xinhua said late on Tuesday.The U.S. guided missile destroyer USS Lassen sailed within 12 nautical miles of Subi Reef in October, drawing an angry rebuke from China, which called it "extremely irresponsible".Subi Reef is an artificial island built up by China on dredged up sand over the past year or so.Before China turned it into an island, Subi was submerged at high tide. Under the U.N. And recently, the head administrator of the NASA confirmed the facility exists. "There is an Area 51. It's not what many people think. I've been to a place called that but it's a normal research and development place," Charles Bolden, who has led NASA since 2009, said, according to the Telegraph. "I never saw any aliens or alien spacecraft or anything when I was there. I think because of the secrecy of the aeronautics research that goes on there it's ripe for people to talk about aliens being there."So, the head of NASA said that there is nothing strange about Area 51. Seems like an open and shut case. However, the former astronaut very clearly said that he "never saw any aliens or alien space craft." It would appear that he could simply not be privy to the inner workings of Area 51. A former employee released "secret" Area 51 information. In 2014, a former scientist who claims to have worked within Area 51 named Boyd Bushman gave an interview with engineer Mark Patterson, just before he died. In the now-deleted video, Bushman claimed that he specialized in "reverse-engineering alien UFO technology for the military," according to Tech Times. He also described the secret military base as hosting aliens, who come from the planet "Quintumnia.""There are two groups of aliens. They divide them into two groups," the deceased scientist said in the interview, according to the NY Daily News. "One group are wranglers, and the others are rustlers – the ones who are stealers of cattle. The two groups act differently. The ones that are wranglers are much more friendly, and have a better relationship with us." While it is impossible for anyone to question Bushman now, there are claims the researcher's interview was all a hoax. A host of conspiracy theories: Even 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton wants to get to the bottom of the Area 51 mystery. Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta has a strong interest in alien conspiracy theories, the Huffington Post reported. So much of an interest, in fact, that he spoke to Clinton about it. "He has made me personally pledge we are going to get the information out," Clinton said, according to the Conway Daily Sun. "One way or another. Maybe we could have, like, a task force to go to Area 51." Podesta probably hopes to uncover the conspiracy theories that have surrounded the facility; one of the most popular being that Area 51 hides the remains of UFOs that crash-landed to Earth. Area 51 conspiracy theorists believe that scientists and researchers are recruited to the secret military base in order to reverse-engineer the extraterrestrial technology, and that the government is covering it all up. Other theories include fancier possibilities, like the creation of  weather control technology, time travel and teleportation.In 2013, the CIA confirmed the existence of Area 51, but made no mention about any grand conspiracy theories regarding aliens or UFOs, according to CNN. The released document instead confirmed that the secret military base is "a testing site for the government's U-2 and OXCART aerial surveillance programs." Regardless, the idea that alien life exists beyond the stars is one that isn't going away any time soon.

Another strong earthquake has struck the Pacific nation of Vanuatu but there was no threat of a tsunami and no immediate reports of damage or injuries.The magnitude 6.9 quake struck on Thursday 109 kilometres west of the village of Sola and 453 kilometres northwest of the capital, Port Vila.It is the third strong earthquake to strike Vanuatu this week, although none have caused problems.Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office Director Shadrack Welegtabit said he didn't feel the quake in the capital and hasn't received any reports that it has caused damage.Vanuatu sits on the Ring of Fire, the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are common.AP-http://www.newshub.co.nz/

How ni-Vanuatu activist escaped being bombed-By Len Garae-Rainbow Warrior in Auckland Harbour after bombing reportedly by French secret service agents-Posted: Sunday, May 31, 2015 12:00 am

On this night of July 10, 1985, the Vanuatu Government representative Charles Rara is spending the night with Baldwin Lonsdale (current Head of State) at his home at St. John’s Anglican College in Auckland where he is doing his theological studies, while Captain Pete Willcox and some of his crew are already asleep on the Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior.Rara’s roommate Fernando Pereira (photographer), a Portuguese and a few others are still chatting around the mess-room, sharing between them the last two bottles of beer.Suddenly, the lights go out. There’s the sharp crack of breaking glass. Then, a sudden roar of water. The crew’s first thought: We’ve been hit, possibly by a tug (boat).Then, there’s a second explosion. One of the two bombs has torn a gaping hole to the room which Rara and Pereira share.The eight sentences above report the historical bombing of the Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior, after its passage through Port Vila Harbour where Rara boarded the vessel, as it set sail for Murorua Atoll in French Polynesia, to protest against France’s nuclear testing on the atoll.The banner calling for a total ban of nuclear testing towards a ‘Nuclear Free Pacific’ was drawn up in Port Vila following a regional meeting by Governments and NGOs from round the Pacific that was held in Port Vila.The following is a first hand; first ever report of the suspense and trauma the Rara Family experienced in their quiet village at La Bwaru in North Pentecost. Their only connection to the outside world at the time was Radio Vanuatu. This is how Charles’ younger brother, Patrick Rara tells it:“The moment we heard on the radio that the Rainbow Warrior was bombed and sunk by French secret agents in Auckland Harbour, silence fell over our home. Nothing was said of the fate of my brother or the crew.“Our mother and Charles’ wife from Isabel in the Solomons were the only two crying.“I was the second last born in the family.“We all kept our ears close to the radio to hear the next news. It was hard to take; it was too far away to understand what life was like over there. Why would somebody want to bomb a ship, let alone the Rainbow Warrior? “International politics and military sabotage were strange to our ears in our village but not to my brother. Charles understood such extreme behaviour, especially if it were in connection to France.“The French at the time did not see eye to eye with Vanuatu because people protested in Port Vila against Paris for its nuclear testing at Tahiti.“They argued that if the testing were safe then French nuclear scientists should test their nuclear bomb in mainland France and not on a faraway Pacific atoll.“When the Rainbow Warrior dropped anchor in Auckland Harbour, my brother was overjoyed that someone knew him in the strange city.“It was Baldwin Lonsdale who went to school with him in the Solomons. Baldwin took him to his house where they stayed and chatted and had lunch and continued until supper.“After supper Charles said their stories became “so sweet” he had to stay the night. Charles said God was good to keep him from the ship or he would have been bombed to death in his room.“Charles returned to the wharf in the morning and it was teeming with security. He did not understand a thing and forced his way through the throng of people but could not see the glorious Rainbow Warrior where it was anchored.“Someone whispered to him the most frightening news that it was bombed and was sunk to the bottom of the harbour. Nobody could understand it then that the French had ordered its sabotage.“But for Charles, he told us that his immediate guess at the time and he blurted it out was that it was the work of the French, that French men would go to that extreme to commit such a terrorist act in peaceful Auckland.“As a first time arrival in Auckland, he asked where his colleagues were and he was taken to them at a hotel. He said, ‘When they saw me, they burst out crying knowing that it was the end of the journey because there was no Rainbow Warrior to take us to challenge the French Navy blockade at the nuclear testing site’.“Charles said they had been fully briefed by the American captain of the Rainbow Warrior to follow his instructions, and not make any mistake because they were going to evade the French navy blockade, to enter the restricted zone.“But for my brother, it was just the start of his trauma because Auckland police caught up with him and arrested him for what he said, on suspicion that he might have known of the bombing thus his spending the night ashore with his friend.“Police interrogated him at the police station for a whole day until he convinced them that he grew up in Vanuatu and he knew the French attitude towards ni-Vanuatu regarding their nuclear testing activities. He reminded them that he had lived with the French all his life and the French (and British) had controlled Vanuatu for 74 years until Vanuatu became politically independent on July 30 of 1980. Satisfied, the police took him back to the hotel.“The crew lost everything including their travel documents so they were provided with clothes and shoes by the Red Cross and finally they were flown back to their respective countries. You see the Rainbow Warrior had an international crew from round the world.“Once he returned safely to Vanuatu, Charles said he was appointed by the Walter Lini’s Vanua’aku Pati Government to represent Vanuatu’s young, nationalistic call for a Nuclear Free Pacific on the ship. He said he was issued with a “Red Passport”, a diplomatic passport to prove that he was not an ordinary man and that if anything should happen to him then those who found his passport would know who he was”.Charles has 5 children, three boys and two girls. He has since passed away leaving behind his wife and children who are now back in her native Solomon Islands.Patrick, who is now 53 years old, says his brother was a man with unique, silent qualities that allowed his actions to speak for him. Charles was close to Father Walter Lini. He heard Father Lini’s famous utterance that Vanuatu would not be fully free until all colonised countries in the Pacific were all free of colonial rule.Asked his brother if Charles was acknowledged for his brave stand to the might of super power arrogance, he shook his head without saying anything.Finally the French ended their nuclear testing at Moruroa Atoll.

After the end of the Cold War, it seemed reasonable that the nuclear insanity of the world would have subsided.  But, after being in office about a month, newly elected French President Jacques Chirac announced his decision to resume nuclear testing at the South Pacific atoll called Mururoa.  This decision has been condemned by leaders around the world,and has provoked negative reactions throughout the South Pacific community of nations.Former French President Francois Miterrand imposed a moratorium on nuclear testing in 1992.  Chirac's decision to resume testing is widely viewed as a cynical betrayal of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which planned to conclude negotiations on a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty in 1996.  France and other nations promised to exercise the "utmost restraint" in nuclear testing until then.  The French have reneged on that promise and plan to carry out eight nuclear explosions at Mururoa beginning in September this year.  This plan has been greeted by expressions of outrage by Pacific leaders.  The following information was taken from four different news bulletins:  Pacific News Bulletin, The Washington Pacific Report, Pacnews, and Pacific Report.Australia.   The Australian government has urged that citizens consider boycotting French goods.  Protests were held outside French embassies in Canberra and Sydney.  A group known as the Pacific Popular Front has claimed responsibility for a fire which destroyed the French consulate in Perth.  Australian leader John Howard said "... most Australians regard the idea of nuclear testing ...as grotesque, and the idea that it should take place in our backyard, far away from metropolitan France is an act of great arrogance and great insensitivity..."New Zealand.  Don McKinnon, NZ Foreign Minister referred to Chirac's decision as "Napoleonic arrogance."  Back in 1975, NZ took France to the World Court and succeeded in forcing them to conduct nuclear tests underground instead of in the air.Fiji.  In Suva, the Pacific Concerns Resource Center  (PCRC) has called for a boycott of the South Pacific games, scheduled to be held in Tahiti in August, in protest of the French nuclear testing.  The PCRC is the international secretariat for a network of nations which support a Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific (NFIP).Solomon Islands.  Government leader Mr. Tausinga said France should know-that the South Pacific is not an empty ocean, but is inhabited by people whose lives depend on a clean environment and non-poisonous marine products.Western Samoa.  Western Samoa is the first country to officially announce-that it is pulling out of the South Pacific Games.Vanuatu.  The Vanuatu government is alone in not condemning the nuclear testing.  It has placed a ban on broadcasts on Radio Vanuatu that mention anything in connection with the French nuclear testing.
