Yet Netanyahu has recorded a warm Christmas greeting for all the Christian citizens of Israel, as well as to Christians around the world. He also invites all Christians to come visit Israel and see the places where the Bible came to live. Amen. No Israeli Prime Minister better understands the deep friendship evangelical Christians have with Israel, or that Israel has no better or more faithful and enduring friends than those who have a deep faith in Jesus Christ. So let’s continue to be praying for the Prime Minister and for all the people of Israel this Chanukah and Christmas season. Let’s continue to mobilize Christians around the world to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, as The Joshua Fund continues to do. And let the name of Jesus — Yeshua in Hebrew — be lifted up among all this Christmas season, just as it was amongst the Israeli shepherds in the field outside of Bethlehem so long ago. Taking a page out of Ben-Gurion and Begin’s playbook, PM will begin hosting a regular Bible group in his official residence.Taking a page out of David Ben-Gurion and Menachem Begin’s playbook, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will begin hosting a regular Bible study group in his official residence for researchers, public officials and invited guests.Netanyahu announced the establishment of the study circle on Friday at a ceremony marking 30 days since the passing of his father-in-law, Shmuel Ben-Artzi. The study group will be named after Ben-Artzi, a noted poet and Bible teacher.Both Ben-Gurion and Begin, when they each served as prime minister, hosted regular Bible study groups.Netanyahu said he was establishing the class to perpetuate love of the Bible.Last Sunday, at a ceremony in Sde Boker marking the 38th anniversary of Ben-Gurion’s death, Netanyahu recalled the first premier’s Bible study class, saying that his father-in-law used to attend.

Ben-Gurion understood that the Book of Books is our mandate for our country, as he said in that same unforgettable statement before the Peel Commission in 1936, Netanyahu said. He viewed the Bible as the wondrous story of the Jewish people, the unique spiritual, cultural and historic heritage of our people, and also as one of the cornerstones of all of human culture.

Kim Jong-il, who has died aged 69 after a heart attack, was the general secretary of the Workers' party of Korea and head of the military in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). He was one of the most reclusive and widely condemned national leaders of the late 20th and early 21st century, and left his country diplomatically isolated, economically broken and divided from South Korea.
Unsurprisingly for a man who went into mourning for three years after the death in 1994 of his own father, the legendary leader Kim Il-sung, and who in the first 30 years of his political career made no public statements, even to his own people, Kim's career is riddled with claims, counter-claims, speculation and contradiction.
There are few hard facts about his birth and early years. The DPRK propagated an extraordinary tale of his birth occurring on Mount Baekdu, one of Korea's most revered sites, and being accompanied by shooting stars in the sky. It is more likely that he was born in a small village in the USSR, while his father was serving as a Soviet-backed general during the second world war.Kim's early life was spent in the shadows of a self-created legend, his father Kim Il-sung, who returned to Korea in 1945 after independence from Japan, and established, initially with Soviet and Chinese support, the DPRK. Kim's brother and mother both died before he was eight. He was to witness the Korean war from 1950 to 1953, in which hundreds of thousands of Koreans, Chinese and Americans as part of a UN force fought across the country, returning almost to the point at which they had started. The armistice signed in 1953 settled the border between South and North Korea at the 38th Parallel.With the arrival of the cold war, relations between the two countries (for this is, to all intents and purposes, what they became) were almost completely broken off, with whole families split for the ensuing decades, some for ever. This event and its after-effects, along with the war against the Japanese in the 1940s, was to cast a long shadow over the years ahead, and led to the creation of the wholly unprecedented worship of Kim Il-sung, and his elevation to almost Godlike status. It was also to create the system in which his son was to occupy a similarly elevated a position.

Kim was educated at the newly founded university in Pyongyang, named after his father, graduating in 1964. The 1960s and early 1970s were the golden years for the DPRK. It undertook rapid industrialisation, economically outstripped its southern competitor and enjoyed the support of both the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union. A state ideology, mixing nationalism and basic Marxist economics, going under the name Juche, was constructed, and Kim Il-sung effectively silenced, disposed of and cleared away any opposition, isolating the country and exercising an iron grip on the military, the state media, the government and party apparatus.Kim Jong-il's early career within the party was spent dealing with propaganda. He had a lifelong interest in film, and indeed wrote a treatise, On Cinema, which was to attain the status of canonical truth after his father's death, along with all of his other utterances. In 1973 he became party secretary of the propaganda department, and, in 1974, was designated his father's successor, creating in effect the world's first communist family succession. In 1980 he was elevated to the Politburo, and was granted the title Dear Leader, as opposed to Great Leader, which had been granted by his father to himself. In 1991, he was named commander of the DPRK armed forces. The death of his father in 1994 led to his being appointed general secretary of the Workers' party, the ultimate seat of power. His father maintained his position as eternal president. To this day, the DPRK enjoys a head of state who has been dead since 1994.There is great controversy over the extent of Kim's powers and influence in the latter years of his father's long period in power. To some historians, Kim was no more than his father's puppet, and had no real basis for power in the party, which explains the bitter years from 1994 in which he disappeared from view, waging a long battle for legitimacy within the party and army. To others, he was a negative, malevolent influence over his father from the 1970s onwards, when North Korea began its long and tragic descent into economic deprivation, isolation, starvation and poverty.

By 1980, South Korea had overtaken its northern neighbour, and was well on its way to being one of the Asian tigers – high-performing economies, with democratic movements ultimately winning power in the 1990s. The withdrawal of most Soviet aid in 1991, with the fall of the Soviet empire, pushed North Korea further down. Kim Il-sung had held a genuine place in the affections of North Korean people. His son was regarded as a shadowy playboy, with rumours circulating over the years that he imported Russian and Chinese prostitutes, and lived a life of profligacy and excess.

More worrying for the international community were the clear connections between Kim and the bombing of a South Korean plane in 1987, which killed 115 people, and the murder by bombing of 17 South Korean officials while on a visit to Burma in 1983. Kim's admissions, years later, when he met the prime minister of Japan Junichiro Koizumi in 2002, that he also had knowledge of the abduction of more than a dozen Japanese people in the 1970s and 1980s, only added to his image as a shadowy, evil character.This is an oversimplification. Kim inherited the very worst legacy of the cold war, in a country torn apart by colonisation and war, a bitter historical residue that lingers to this day. While he may have had influence on his father, the economic template for the country had been set in the 1950s and 1960s, long before he had any say. Its unsustainability only became clear in the very final years of Kim Il-sung's life. And Kim Jong-il finally had to deal with a complex network of interests in the army and party after his father's death, something which, combined with the immediate impact of bad harvests, created the terrible famines that claimed up to a million North Korean lives from 1995 until 1999. The official state information agency issued a statement, after the worst of this period was over in 2001, saying that North Korea had stood on the crossroads of life and death.North Korea had signed an agreement in 1993, brokered by a visit by the former US president Jimmy Carter, to stop its nuclear programme in return for help in building two power-generating nuclear reactors. Disagreements on both sides meant the reactors were not built, and North Korea progressed towards its own nuclear programme in 2003. A brief thaw in relations between the US and the DPRK at the end of the Clinton presidency in 2000 saw high-level visits on both sides, but this stopped momentarily in the George W Bush era, before North Korea was encouraged back to the negotiating table as part of what were called the six party talks from 2006 onwards. The election of Barack Obama as US president in 2008 served to provoke a period of harsh rhetoric, nuclear testing, missile launches, and diplomatic aggression uncharacteristic even for the DPRK. In 2010, Seoul blamed the sinking of a warship on a torpedo attack, and North Korean forces bombarded an island in disputed waters.Kim was rumoured to have suffered a stroke in late 2008 that incapacitated him. This may have forced him to nominate his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, as his successor, though there is precious little firm evidence for when, why or even if this decision was made.Kim Jong-il travelled little, and only ever in a train. He visited Russia and China, and had been to Indonesia. He was reputed to have some 30,000 American films in his personal library, and was one of the world's main customers for luxury cognac. According to a Japanese chef who worked for him in the 1980s and 1990s, he had a connoisseur's understanding of the finest cuts of raw fish. While officially married only once, he had a number of recognised mistresses, with whom he fathered several children.

International politicians who met him were impressed by his memory for facts and his quick and easy wit. But there is little dispute about his responsibility for a system that saw widespread human rights abuses and perhaps the worst record for press freedom and government transparency in the world.He is survived by a daughter and three officially recognised sons.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died of a heart attack at the age of 69, state media have announced.Millions of North Koreans were engulfed in indescribable sadness, the KCNA state news agency said, as people wept openly in Pyongyang.KNCA described one of his sons, Kim Jong-un, as the great successor whom North Koreans should unite behind.Pyongyang's neighbours are on alert amid fears of instability in the poor and isolated nuclear-armed nation.Fears were compounded by unconfirmed reports from South Korean news agency Yonhap that the North had test-fired a missile off its eastern coast before the announcement of Kim Jong-il's death was made.

Unnamed government officials in Seoul were quoted as saying they did not believe the launch was linked to the announcement. The South Korean defence ministry has declined to comment.Following news of Mr Kim's death, South Korea put its armed forces on high alert and said the country was on a crisis footing. Japan's government convened a special security meeting.China - North Korea's closest ally and biggest trading partner - expressed shock at the news of his death and pledged to continue making active contributions to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in this region.Asian stock markets fell after the news was announced.

Mr Kim's death was announced in an emotional statement on national television.North Korea has shocked the world by announcing that its leader has died.Kim Jong-il had been presented to his people as a father-figure and demi-god - all-powerful and benevolent. But his tight control of the country, and his creation of a nuclear arsenal, has meant his death has caused political shockwaves around the region too.
His presumed successor, Kim Jong-un, is largely unknown outside the secretive state, and countries throughout the region are watching closely for any instability in the transition of power.The announcer, wearing black, struggled to keep back the tears as she said he had died of physical and mental over-work.The KCNA later reported that he had died of a severe myocardial infarction along with a heart attack at 08:30 local time on Saturday (23:30 GMT Friday).He had been on a train at the time, for one of his field guidance tours, KCNA said.The state news agency said a funeral would be held in Pyongyang on 28 December and Kim Jong-un would head the funeral committee. A period of national mourning has been declared from 17 to 29 December.

Images from inside the secretive state showed people in the streets of Pyongyang weeping at the news of his death.Ruling party members in one North Korean county were shown by state TV banging tables and crying out loud, the AFP news agency reports.I can't believe it, a party member named as Kang Tae-Ho was quoted as saying. How can he go like this? What are we supposed to do? Another, Hong Sun-Ok, said: He tried so hard to make our lives much better and he just left like this.KCNA said people were convulsing with pain and despair at their loss, but would unite behind his successor Kim Jong-un.All party members, military men and the public should faithfully follow the leadership of comrade Kim Jong-un and protect and further strengthen the unified front of the party, military and the public, the news agency said.Little is known about Kim Jong-un. Turning point

South Korea - which remains technically at war with the north - urged people to go about their usual economic activities on Monday, while putting the military on alert.
President Lee Myung-Bak spoke to US President Barack Obama by telephone and they agreed to closely co-operate and monitor the situation together, a South Korean presidential spokesman said.Reaction from Washington was muted, with the White House saying it was closely monitoring reports of the death.The US remained committed to stability on the Korean peninsula, and to the freedom and security of our allies, it said in a statement.China said it was distressed to hear the news of his death. We express our grief about this and extend our condolences to the people of North Korea,foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying.Kim Jong-il's death should not have come as a complete surprise to anyone, given his tenuous health.But it is safe to say that the North Koreans would have very much preferred that he lived one more year, so that in 2012, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il-sung, his father, Kim Jong-il would have been on hand to pay homage to the Great Leader.Now that lot will fall to Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-il's youngest son who has been put forward as the natural and fully prepared successor to his father.Will Kim's death aid ties with US? Windmills! Those gargantuan three-bladed energy creating towers that are popping up like mushrooms across Canada's pristine rural landscape are creating as much controversy as electricity!

Controversy? I've just spent two weeks near Kincardine, Ontario, on the shore of Lake Huron where scores of the huge windmills are already in operation on farmland some 10 kilometres to the south of the town as well to the north at the eastern sector of land adjacent to the Bruce nuclear power plant.There are proposals for more windmills on farmland south of the town close to the lake.Who has control over whether these will be installed and where? Is it the local township municipality or the county and its elected members? To whom can the area/affected residents voice their objections--or support? Try objections.The answer is this. The provincial
government has removed all planning or jurisdictional oversight from the local municipalities or, for that matter, the area's county councils.This was done through the enactment in 2009 of the Green Energy and Green Economy Act. The Act changed many of the rules for obtaining approvals and enables quicker development of renewable energy projects.Significant changes to the renewable energy approval process include:

* Renewable energy projects are no longer subject to the land use planning requirements of the Planning Act. Meaning that they are not required to obtain Official Plan and Zoning By-law amendments or register Site Plan agreements through the municipality.

* Renewable energy projects are no longer subject to the Environmental Assessment Act however the same protections are built into the Renewable Energy Approved (REA) process.

* There are consistent rules across the province regarding setbacks to residences and other sensitive receptors as well as environmental features.

The Ontario Power Authority is still responsible for issuing contracts for renewable power under the Province's new Feed in Tariff (FIT) program.

The result is that the local residents/taxpayers have no democratic voice whatever if they object. They can raise issues with the local members of the provincial parliament but even if that MPP is a member of the governing party, he or she has little impact on the decisions made by the governing bureaucrats at Queen's Park.
The installation of new windmills on farmland is one contentious matter that's given rise to hundreds of Stop the Windmills signs being posted on lawns and roadsides across the area as the citizenry tries to galvanize and organize.But what is really going to ring the protest bell is the just-recently disclosed bureaucrat plan to allow an army of windmills to be planted in the water offshore of some of the most heavily dense summer cottage beach areas in Ontario.The plan of attack is to put the windmills (hundreds of them) smack in the vision line of hundreds of cottagers whose buildings and views of the pristine lake have been in place for over a hundred years.
The published plans show a vast and miles long installation area stretching from the Bruce nuclear plant in the north, south past Kincardine Harbour to Point Clark.

While the offshore installations appear to be years away the ramifications of the Act are here and now for the government that enacted the legislation that, in effect, strips property owners by the thousands of their rights inside a purportedly democratic society.I rarely make predictions, but as a long-time practicing lawyer concerned with constitutional as well as land use matters, I will take a shot.As I see it, a well-founded legal case can be made for a court declaration that the Green Energy and Green Economy Act is ultra vires-- that it is invalid as being beyond the powers of the provincial government.One more prediction--that before the next Ontario provincial election scheduled for October 2011 the Act will be amended so as to restore basic democratic rights to affected Ontario citizens.Generally speaking, this is a hot button issue that will be closely monitored by all provincial/territorial governments in Canada. A proposal to erect 500-foot wind turbines within three kilometres of the Collingwood, Ontario airport has prompted some frank opposition from city officials.
What would possess them to stick them within a couple of kilometres of a busy airport runway? Charlie Tatham, a Collingwood councillor who heads the services board that runs the airport told the Toronto Star, It’s embarrassing in some respects to have to explain why it’s dumb to put 500-foot towers close to a busy airport. Safety has always been our Number One concern, said spokesman Kevin Surette. He said his company's consultants said there are no safety concerns.The proposal comes as Collingwood, along with other Toronto-area airports, is trying to lure businesses and aircraft owners who will be displaced by the closure of Buttonville Airport in Toronto in three years.

On December 6, we reported on a document originating from Halliburton subsidiary KBR describing services KBR is looking to farm out to subcontractors. The document was passed on to us by a state government employee.Our research has since discovered another document that further reveals the ongoing effort by the government to establish FEMA camps and provide services for them in the event of an emergency, including a real or more likely a false flag terrorist event.In May of 2011, the FedBizOpps.gov website posted a Department of Homeland Security solicitation document entitled National Responder Support Camp calling for contractors to construct and operate camps in which to stage responders and other authorized personnel and assets deployed for occurrences or events requiring a federal government response. The National Responder Support Camps contract will be used by FEMA, or by other federal agencies through FEMA, consistent with the specific authorities of the agency utilizing the contract’s services.During disaster situations or other events, FEMA federal, state and local responders may need a place that provides shelter, food, and additional basic needs,the document continues. Hence the need for the procurement of effective and efficient Responder Support Camps is present.

The DHS document makes a point of stating that FEMA’s role transcends hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, cyclones, tornadoes, blizzards, acts of terrorism, tsunamis, or avalanches and includes playing a role in assisting with events designated by the Secretary of Homeland Security as National Special Security Events (NSSEs) and with respect to National Response Framework activities of federal agencies.In 2008, a document exposed by Wikileaks revealed the mechanics behind the NSSE as it related to the 2008 Republican National Convention held in St. Paul, Minnesota. If Christ is who he claims to be, and is the only way to reconciliation with God, then we can expect that plenty of counterfeits and deceptive substitutes will come along to derail us from Christ and his mission. Of course Jesus warned about exactly that: many deceivers, phonies and false Christs would come on the scene leading people astray.Thus for two thousand years now Christianity has faced all sorts of attacks and all sorts of attempts to subvert it from within or without. The challenges are never ending, and new ploys are continuously being utilised to render null and void the Christian faith.One of the newer and more insidious attempts is what is known as Chrislam. As the name implies, this is a deliberate blending or mingling of Christianity and Islam. While some gullible Christians might think this is a neat idea, it is in fact bad news. Indeed, here are ten reasons why no biblical Christian should even consider heading down this path.

One. The Bible repeatedly warns against any form of religious syncretism and the dangers it poses to God’s people. Chrislam is pure religious syncretism. No matter how much its proponents may go on about retaining one’s distinctives, at the end of the day this is all about playing down any such distinctions. It is a lowest-common denominator approach where the uniqueness of Christianity is especially watered down.

Whenever such religious syncretism took place in the Old Testament for example, Yahweh made his displeasure crystal clear. Indeed, the prophets warned time and again against such compromise and confusion. The New Testament also clearly warns against any such wholesale blending of Christian and non-Christian worldviews.Two. The Bible frequently attests to the demonic basis or underpinning of idolatrous beliefs and non-Christian religions. Passages such as Deut. 32:16-17; Psalm 106: 34-41; Acts 26:17-18; 1 Cor. 10:19-21; 1 Thess. 1:9; 1 Tim. 4:1; 1 John. 4:1; Rev. 9:20 all make it clear that these are not just false religions, but are systems undergirded by deceiving spirits intent on leading God’s people away from the one true God. This is not something to be toying with.Three. These are two fully incompatible belief systems. The differences between Christianity and Islam far outweigh any similarities. The very centre of the Christian message is denied outright by Muslims. Christianity is Christ and what he did on the cross.

Christianity teaches that God became man, lived among us, and then died on the cross for our sins and rose again. Islam utterly repudiates the notion that Jesus is God, or even God’s son, and directly condemns the idea that he died and rose again on the cross. When you rip the very heart of the Christian message out like this, you no longer have Christianity.Four. As such, this attempt at interfaith dialogue simply compromises the Christian gospel. It waters it down so much that there is nothing recognisable left. When the very core teachings of Christianity are scuttled or downplayed simply in the interests of getting along or reducing tensions, then it is a counterproductive effort.The early disciples spoke about – and relished in – the offence of the cross. They knew that their core message was an offensive one and an alienating one, but it was a message they nonetheless were compelled to preach. Better to lose some friends along the way than to compromise the truth of the gospel.

Five. These attempts at reconciliation and dialogue are almost always simply one-way traffic. While Christians are expected to abandon or neuter their hard and exclusive doctrines, there is rarely a similar effort made by Muslims to tone down or renounce some of their dangerous and/or offensive beliefs.Why in the world any Christian would be willing to play such a one-sided game is beyond me. Why should we surrender on all our key beliefs and practices, while the corresponding response from the other side is just not forthcoming? Six. All this really does is further legitimise and elevate Islam. It is simply another strategy to promote Islam in the West and in the process demean Christianity. Indeed, Muslims are on a mission, and any good Muslim wants to see all Westerners submit to Allah and the West come under sharia law.Devout Muslims are on a mission to make this a reality. They are working overtime in the West to accomplish these goals. Yet most Christians are asleep at the wheel, ignorant of this assault on their faith, and unwilling to share their own faith just as actively as Muslims are.Seven. There is no counterpart to this in Muslim-majority countries; indeed, the very attempt would be unheard of, not even dreamed of. Can you imagine a Christian leader being allowed to enter a mosque and proclaim the deity and saving work of Christ? Would such an interfaith setup ever take place in downtown Mecca or in suburban Riyadh? Would a Christian pastor be allowed to freely proclaim the virtues of Christianity in Iran or Saudi Arabia or Syria? Somehow I just don’t think so.

Eight. Indeed, this lopsided endeavour really just further promotes dhimmitude. Christians are already second-class citizens in Muslim countries, and this will in effect make them dhimmis in their own countries. Muslims bent on subverting the West know exactly how all this plays into their hands.Indeed, they see such endeavours – readily gobbled up by undiscerning Christians – as further signs of Western and Christian weakness. They know that gullible Christians will see this as an opportunity to be friends and achieve peace, but Muslims will see it as yet a further stepping stone on the way to complete Islamic subjugation of the infidel West.Nine. What Christian churches desperately need to do is not allow in all this misinformation by Islamist propagandists, but start teaching the basics of the Christian faith. This may be the most theologically illiterate generation of Christians ever.Most Christians are so starved of any sound biblical teaching that they would be sitting ducks for any Islamic indoctrination campaign waged in their churches. They instead need to be taught again the basic doctrines of Christianity so they can discern and withstand this and other assaults on their faith.Ten. If people of different faiths want to discuss matters on an informal basis there is nothing wrong with that. They can do it in plenty of places. But a Christian church should never be used for such an endeavour. The Christian church is the place where the people of God are shepherded and discipled.It is not the place where they should be exposed to false faiths and deceptive opponents of Christianity. No Muslim would allow this to take place on their own home turf, and Christians need to wise up and also be as careful and discerning. Letting wolves into God’s flock is a recipe for suicide, not for religious harmony.Plenty of other reasons could be provided as to why we need to resist the attempts to implement Chrislam like the plague. It does absolutely nothing of value for the Christian church and the spread of the Christian gospel. But it does everything for promoting Islam, dismantling the free West, and rendering ineffective the Christian church.

Hitchens was an old-fashioned sensualist who abstained from clean living as if it were just another kind of church. In 2005, he would recall a trip to Aspen, Colorado, and a brief encounter after stepping off a ski lift.I was met by immaculate specimens of young American womanhood, holding silver trays and flashing perfect dentition,he wrote. What would I like? I thought a gin and tonic would meet the case. Sir, that would be inappropriate.In what respect? Hitchens was born in Portsmouth, England, in 1949. His father, Eric, was a purse-lipped Navy veteran known as The Commander; his mother, Yvonne, a romantic who later kill herself during an extramarital rendezvous in Greece. Young Christopher would have rather read a book. He was a a mere weed and weakling and kick-bag who discovered that words could function as weapons and so stockpiled them.In college, Oxford, he met such longtime friends as authors Martin Amis and Ian McEwan and claimed to be nearby when visiting Rhodes scholar Bill Clinton did or did not inhale marijuana. Radicalized by the 1960s, Hitchens was often arrested at political rallies, was kicked out of Britain's Labour Party over his opposition to the Vietnam War and became a correspondent for the radical magazine International Socialism. His reputation broadened in the 1970s through his writings for the New Statesman.Wavy-haired and brooding and aflame with wit and righteous anger, he was a star of the left on paper and on camera, a popular television guest and a columnist for one of the world's oldest liberal publications, The Nation. In friendlier times, Vidal was quoted as citing Hitchens as a worthy heir to his satirical throne.But Hitchens never could simply nod his head. He feuded with fellow Nation columnist Alexander Cockburn, broke with Vidal and angered liberals by stating that the child's life begins at conception. An essay for Vanity Fair was titled Why Women Aren't Funny, and Hitchens wasn't kidding.

He had long been unhappy with the left's reluctance to confront enemies or friends. He would note his strong disappointment that Arthur Miller and other leading liberals shied from making public appearances on behalf of Rushdie after the Ayatollah Khomeini called for his death. He advocated intervention in Bosnia and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.No Democrat angered him more than Clinton, whose presidency led to the bitter end of Hitchens' friendship with White House aide Sidney Blumenthal and other Clinton backers. IMF chief warns of new Great Depression

BRUSSELS - International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde has warned the Great Depression of the 1930s may repeat itself unless the EU pulls together and gets foreign help. Fresh unemployment statistics added to the gloom by highlighting the social cost of austerity.If the international community does not work together, the risk from an economic point of view is that of retraction, rising protectionism, isolation. This is exactly the description of what happened in the Thirties and what followed is not something we are looking forward to,Lagarde said in a speech delivered to the US State Department on Thursday (15 December).She said eurozone countries obviously need to make adjustments in order to overcome the debt crisis, but also appealed to non-European donors, just one day after the US Federal Reserve said it had no plans in contributing to a eurozone bail-out.It is really that Gordian Knot that needs to be cracked, that needs to be addressed as collectively as possible, starting with those at the centre but with the support of the international community probably channelled through the IMF,Lagarde said, in reference to a pledge by all EU leaders except Britain to boost their contribution to the IMF by a total of €200 billion and also look for non-EU aid.Russia has been so far the only country to come forward, pledging to support the IMF eurozone bail-out with $10 billion. Germany's central bank meanwhile has said it will agree to pay its share of the €200 billion sum - €45 billion - only if non-EU countries participate as well.

Neither is Europe's Central Bank willing to step up its bond purchasing programme to alleviate market pressure on Italy and Spain.ECB chief Mario Draghi on Thursday ruled out such intervention, stressing that the limited purchases of Italian and Spanish bonds were neither eternal nor infinite.I will never be tired of saying that the first response ought to emanate from the country,he said in a speech in Berlin. BRUSSELS - EU countries have criticised a Russian draft UN resolution on Syria for morally equating security forces and rebels, but say the text can go through with amendments.Russian UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin circulated the paper to the 14 other UN Security Council (UNSC) members - including France, Germany, Portugal and the UK - in a surprise move on Thursday (15 December).

The text - seen by Reuters and the Washington Post - condemns disproportionate use of force by Syrian authorities and urges the Syrian government to put an end to suppression of those exercising their rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.It calls for an end to all violence and provocations by all parties and [condemns] the activity of extremists groups, including attacks against state institutions [and] law enforcement personnel.It also criticises illegal supply of weapons to the armed groups in Syria and says neighbouring countries should take necessary steps to prevent such supplies.Churkin told press in New York: We do believe that it's not only the authorities but also extremist opposition forces who are causing damage and killing people.EU countries and the US cautiously welcomed the development, which marks an end to Russia and China's months-long veto on UN action.The Russian text is disliked for equating the rebel Free Syrian Army and Syrian National Council with President Bashar Assad's security regime. It also leaves Russia free to keep selling arms to Syria while blocking alleged smuggling of arms to rebels via Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey.French UN ambassador Araud told press the draft is unbalanced and needs a lot of amendments. German envoy Peter Wittig said: To put the Syrian authorities and the peaceful demonstrators and the opposition on the same level is totally unacceptable.UK ambassador Michael Tatham and US secretary of state echoed the line. Clinton said the seeming parity between the government and peaceful protesters is unfortunate.

Russia's move comes hot on the heels of two reports highlighting atrocities by the Syrian regime.UN human rights envoy Navi Pillay on Monday noted that Assad's forces have killed more than 5,000 people in the past nine months and said crimes against humanity are likely to have been committed.Human Rights Watch named 74 Syrian officers involved in murder and torture of civilians in a study out Thursday. It quoted army defectors, such as one sniper in Homs who was ordered to kill 15 to 20 people out of every 5,000 protesters in a crowd. These abuses constitute crimes against humanity,it said.Security specialists in the EU diplomatic service have told EUobserver that Assad's position in the country is much stronger than some analysts believe.Syria is still a slow burner, one contact said.The question remains whether Assad will in the end seek refuge externally or go out with a bang.Another contact said it is a genuine problem that if Assad falls, it will tip the balance of power in the region, giving Sunni-Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia the upper hand against Shia-Muslim Iran in a situation that could provoke future conflicts.For his part, Russia's ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov on Monday told reporters in Brussels that Nato countries' regime change in Libya crossed red lines by excessive bombing of Gaddafi forces, arms transfers to rebels and special forces' boots on the ground.The last thing we want is a repetition of this in Syria,he said.A Reuters report out Friday indicated that Nato countries waged war in Libya for the sake of oil interests as well as humanitarian concerns.The story quoted a senior source at Libya's national oil company, NOC. as saying that oil firms linked to Nato countries - BP, ConocoPhillips, Eni, Exxon Mobil, Galp, OMV, Repsol, Saras, Shell and Total - will get priority in crude oil sales next year.

Russian President: EU Parliament means nothing

They mean nothing to me ... The European Parliament should deal with internal issues because the EU has a lot of problems of its own, Medvedev told press in Brussels on Thursday (15 December).He was more gallant about the euro crisis in other remarks.He said a powerful EU is very important to Russia and called the euro one of its most important contributions to the world.Forty one percent of Russian foreign currency reserves are in euros or in euro-denominated securities. This is why we will keep on backing the EU ... We are ready to invest all the necessary financial means to back the European economy and the eurozone,he added.On Thursday morning, Medvedev aide Arkady Dvorkovich had said Russia might deliver an extra $10 billion to the International Monetary Fund to be used for EU bail-outs.The summit took place amid the biggest test of Kremlin authority in the past 20 years. Last weekend, some 50,000 people protested in Moscow against rigged elections. Over 15,000 people have already signed up on Facebook for a second rally on Christmas Eve.For their part, EU Presidents Herman Van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso barely registered that something out of the ordinary is happening.

Barroso said nothing regarding the elections. Van Rompuy said he is concerned about reported irregularities and praised the Russian police for showing restraint: The recent large demonstrations were peaceful and the authorities in my view handled it very well.The Medvedev meeting caused a fuss in terms of security, with over 100 journalists and EU officials kept out of the venue because they had the wrong badge or tried to use the wrong door.The lame-duck president has promised to step down in March to let Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin officially take back power, making the event his last-ever EU summit.His low status was reflected in Putin's annual question-and-answer TV show in Russia the same day, in which Putin mentioned Medvedev's name just once in four and a half hours.Putin caused surprise by suggesting CCTV cameras should be installed in polling stations to prevent fraud in the March presidential election and that he might pardon jailed oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky if he wins.More predictably, he blamed the protests on plots by the US and by UK-based Russian exiles.With anti-Putin feeling rife on the internet while the Kremlin controls the TV, the 59-year-old politician sounded out of touch on new media. He said the government should not control the internet, but warned that it is full of paedophiles. Asked if he looks at websites, he answered: I do not have any time for that.

Majority of French oppose fiscal treaty

BRUSSELS - A majority of French people are opposed to the recently agreed EU plans for a fiscal compact treaty, with opposition Socialist presidential candidate Francois Hollande calling for a renegotiation of the text.Some 52 percent of French people oppose the proposed fiscal compact, according to a poll by BVA and reported in the domestic regional press, while 45 percent back the plan.Opposition and support for the fiscal compact in the country appears to be cleanly split along right-left lines, unlike in a number of other countries, where resistance to the accord is bubbling up from a variety of ideological quarters.Some eight out of 10 left-wing voters back Socialist candidate Hollande’s aim to renegotiate the text if elected, while eight out of 10 conservative voters oppose the idea.And 55 percent of managers back the text while just 36 percent of workers approve.The poll comes as the discourse over the eurozone debt crisis response is hardening ahead of elections in 2012.On Monday (12 December), Hollande announced that he would renegotiate the document.If I am elected president, I will renegotiate the agreement to put what it lacks today, he told RTL.He said that he would add what is missing, mentioning he would push to include intervention from the European Central Bank, the creation of eurobonds and a financial relief fund.Finally, there must also be growth, he added. Without growth, we will not reach any of our objectives of deficit reduction.

The Frenchman attacked the core concept of the new agreement, a golden rule, or balanced budget amendment that should be inscribed into constitutions, in effect preventing future governments from exercising expansionary fiscal policies.Asked about the golden rule, the candidate said he would not vote for it under this logic.
Hollande however has not so far called for a referendum on the subject, a development the Irish government may be forced to accept.

On Wednesday, Irish finance minister Michael Noonan suggested in an interview with Bloomberg that while the government must first assess whether such a plebiscite is necessary after it receives a first draft of the text some time in the coming days, he warned that any referendum would have to be not on the substance of the agreement, but on membership in the single currency.It really comes down on this occasion to a very simple issue; do you want to continue in the euro or not, he said, echoing the demands of EU leaders after former Greek prime minister George Papandreou said he would hold a referendum on further austerity and structural adjustment.At the time, EU power-brokers insisted that if a referendum were to take place, it must be a simple up-and-down vote on the euro.Faced with that question, I think the Irish people will pass such a referendum, Noonan added.The similarity of the formulation with that of demands on fellow bail-out country Greece was quickly picked up by the opposition.The fact that the minister’s language mirrors almost exactly the proposition used by France and Germany to scupper recent plans for a referendum in Greece will not be lost on people, Michael McGrath, the finance spokesperson for the opposition centre-right Fianna Fail party told the newswire.
McGrath also accused Noonan of attempting to silence legitimate criticism of the fiscal compact agreement.

EU leaders to meet again at end of January

BRUSSELS - All 27 EU leaders are to meet again in Brussels at the end of January or in early February to take stock of work on the new inter-governmental treaty and discuss measures aimed at boosting economic growth, EU Council chief Herman Van Rompuy said on Thursday (15 December).I informed the 27 member states this morning that I will convene a meeting by the end of January or beginning of February, he said during a press conference after a summit with Russian President Dimitri Medvedev.Apart from thrashing out the details of the inter-governmental agreement on fiscal discipline to which 26 countries apart from the UK signed up to last week, Van Rompuy also said growth and jobs would be a topic of discussion.In times of stagnation, in times even of quasi-recession, it is very important to have those topics on the agenda and not to be speaking only of fiscal consolidation, the former Belgian premier said.On this issue, he sided with employment commissioner Laszlo Andor who last week called the so-called fiscal compact a joke because it focuses solely on budget deficits and sanctions, completely ignoring the need to boost employment and economic growth.Van Rompuy also said he had consulted with the prime ministers of Poland and Denmark - the outgoing and incoming rotating EU presidencies - and with the head of the European Commission, a statement meant to underline the primacy of these institutions when organising meetings of EU leaders, after the leaders of France and Germany said they had agreed on the need to have monthly summits during the euro-crisis.

It is not up to Paris or Berlin to call for EU summits. That is the job of Van Rompuy,one EU diplomat from a non-euro country told this website. But, the source added, whatever the two capitals agree is usually the course Van Rompuy takes anyway.
Another EU official meanwhile said Van Rompuy will decide on the final date after consulting with all 27 leaders in the coming days. We had a summit on 9 December. There will be the regular one in March. So this one will be somewhere in between, the official said, noting that it comes pretty close to the Franco-German call for monthly summits.On the treaty-drafting calendar, a first draft is set to be put forward at the end of this week by the legal service of the European Council, with a Franco-German paper likely to follow next week. Since Paris and Berlin hope to finish and adopt the new inter-governmental treaty in March, everything has to go quickly, one EU diplomat said.One idea floated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a press conference earlier this week is to put both the fiscal compact and the legal text establishing the permanent bail-out fund - the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) - into one single document.But Paris is against this idea, EUobserver understands, because the ESM treaty is for the 17 eurozone members, while the other treaty would be signed and ratified by 26 or fewer, as some elements in the Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark and others have begun to question the sovereignty-related implications of this treaty.The ESM legal mix could also see a greater role for the bail-out institution in scrutinising countries that have subscribed to the inter-governmental treaty, instead of the European Commission, which is responsible for all 27 members.This is an idea that was in one of the drafts at the 9 December summit,says one diplomat.We are entering the creative phase, the source added.It is going to be quite hectic until the text is finished.But the UK, whose premier, David Cameron, has been phoning leaders of the treaty-wary countries, may challenge the legality of using EU institutions such as the commission or the European Court of Justice in processes linked to the inter-governmental treaty. Le Figaro's London correspondent quoted Downing Street sources as saying they are looking into potential conflicts of interests of these institutions, which should serve the EU treaties only and all 27 member states.In Berlin, the British views are not being viewed kindly, not only by the government side, but also the opposition. The leader of the German Social Democrats and former foreign minister Frank-Walther Steinmeier told the Rheinische Post that he can see the day coming when the UK will leave the EU altogether.I fear that the decisive step for a British exit from the EU has already been accomplished, Steinmeier said in reference to Cameron's veto last week.

Parliament on board

Meanwhile, the European Parliament has selected three members from different groups to participate in the negotiations of the inter-governmental treaty: German MEP Elmar Brok from the centre-right European People's Party, Italian Social-Democrat Roberto Gualtieri and Belgian Liberal Guy Verhofstadt.French Green MEP Daniel-Cohn Bendit will be a substitute member, replacing one of the other three when they are unable to participate to the sessions of the working group comprising of national diplomats and EU officials, which will start on Monday. The three will brief both the economic and the constitutional affairs committee in the parliament the next day.
Brok, who represented the Parliament in all EU treaty negotiations in the last 20 years, said he would work to secure as much as possible under the community method, meaning EU institutions.

Explaining he reasons behind NDAA 2012

Was the timing merely serendipitous or is something else at play? Yesterday was the “birthday” of the United States Bill of Rights, which our forefathers ratified exactly 220 years ago. The same people who believe the constitution is a living, breathing document just put it on a respirator, metaphorically speaking, by passing the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 (NDAA). Obama has declared his intent to sign the legislation, despite initial indications from the White House of a veto (more on that dog and pony show later in this writing).

NDAA: The 2012 version

Every year, a new version of the defense authorization bill is crafted and ultimately enacted into law. It is an extensive piece of legislation that appropriates funds to defense projects. The current bill provides for a $662 billion defense budget and places the chief of the National Guard Bureau on the Joint Chiefs of Staff despite strong opposition of some military leaders. The massive budget allocation and the creation of a cabinet position for the chief of the U.S. National Guard is not at issue, however. The somewhat muted public frenzy over this bill stems from controversial and seemingly contradictory language that will have an impact on all United States citizens.The language of the bill is readily available on numerous open source government sites, so it will not be included here. It was detailed in my previous article titled Connecting the dots of the National Defense Authorization Act, and its implications discussed in Judi McLeod’s article Disappearing dissenters in Obama’s new Amerika.Yet, there seems to be a full frontal assault by Democrats and Republicans alike to whitewash the bill’s actual ability and intent.

Clearing the controversy

While one section of the bill seems to exclude U.S. citizens from all aspects of this legislation, the key lies in the placement of discretion of exactly who fits the broad definition of a terrorist or broader still, someone who has engaged in a belligerent act. The bottom line is that the NDAA bill contains language that will codify, or make into law, the much debated act of defining U.S. citizens as enemy combatants. It will leave that discretionary power to the executive branch.While many readers have contended that nothing in this bill applies to U.S. citizens, Senator Carl Levin, the bill’s sponsor, explicitly disagrees. Even more alarming, it was Senator Levin who announced in Senate chambers that it was Barack Obama himself who demanded the verbiage that includes U.S. citizens as fair game by our own military on U.S. soil. This followed Senator Lindsey Graham’s gleeful announcement that through the passage of this draconian legislation, the whole of America is now a battlefield and a venue in which the U.S. military may operate against its own.Even in the face of such official pronouncements, there are many legislators who insist that this bit of lawyer-speak does not apply to citizens, and to think it does is just plain silly. Republican Congressman Tim Griffin, for example, has dedicated a Face Book site to decry the myths of the NDAA, showing readers in that venue where he is correct and others are not. Griffin is just one of many attempting to convince an unsuspecting public to relax, continue shopping and allow the government to handle such matters.

Coordinated confusion

Don’t be fooled into thinking that what is taking place in Washington is without purpose. The contradictory language, the circular arguments, and the much publicized threats of veto by this administration are intended as smokescreens as the collective attention of a nation is diverted as America prepares to shut down for the Christmas holiday. The bipartisan support for this bill adds to this confusion by convincing the American people that their Tea Party Republicans or their civil rights watchdogs would never betray the trust of the people. Unfortunately, they have. But few are asking the most important question of them all: why?

Information from intelligence sources: Follow the money

Within the last five weeks, I’ve been in contact with highly placed sources, their staffers and associates who work inside of the beltway. I’ve also engaged in dialogue with top security officials, all who state that this legislation is not about the security of our nation, but the ultimate control of the American people. According to these sources, the administration and congress are anticipating an apocalyptic scenario in the not-too-distant future.While all eyes are on some type of unspeakable nuclear, biological or chemical event at the hands of homegrown terrorists, the real event is already in progress, although America has not yet experienced the full fallout from what is taking place. The terrorists are indeed homegrown actors, and they are engaged in actively destroying the United States, but not with bullets or bombs. Bullets and bombs are effective, but do not have the long-term capacity to effect every citizen from shore to shore. Additionally, such non-state terrorists don’t have the capacity to so effectively infiltrate the administration, the majority of congress, as well as the various regulatory agencies that exist in the U.S.Driven not by a third world theology, the true terrorists are those whose god is greed, power and control, and who have effectively destroyed our monetary and economic system. For years they have been facilitated by all three branches of the American government, although they have been empowered by this administration in particular. Perhaps that’s why we have a man in the Oval Office who lacks the bona-fides of his predecessors, and why those in power refuse to address the lack of due diligence in that venue.

Who benefits?

After all, it is Obama and his closest political supporters who have been the largest financial benefactor of the incestuous Goldman Sachs-Federal Reserve-U.S. Treasury-IMF-World Bank Ponzi scheme, and it is Eric Holder, as attorney general, who has declined to prosecute the criminal behavior of the money changers. One has to look no farther than the MF Global rape of American citizens, where upwards of $1.2 billion turned up missing from customer accounts under the leadership of Obama administration confidant and Goldman Sachs alumni Jon Corzine. Testifying before congress, Corzine was stricken with a case of idiocy when questioned about where the money went.The most telling part of those hearings was not Corzine’s display of hubris through amnesia, but statements made by the panel charged with the inquiry. Instead of ordering Corzine into custody to allow his memory to revive, the congressional panel spoke of learning from mistakes and moving forward. That’s akin to asking a masked bank robber about the location of stolen money, and when he fails to tell his questioners, they look at the bank to determine what steps could have been taken to prevent the robbery.The MF Global and the Jon Corzines of the world are the mere tip of the iceberg. Money is being systematically stolen from each and every American at wholesale levels while this administration and this congress sits by, themselves the benefactors of the actions of the global banking takeover of our country and the world.

As the majority of American people are told by the nightly news that things are improving in Camelot and consequently continue their needless shopping at big box stores for items they don’t need and can’t afford, they are oblivious to what is coming. When the inevitable happens, they will be surprised, shocked and outraged.Of course, that’s all hyperbole, according to the very people who created and perpetuate this madness. And if it were true, wouldn’t the GOP nominees be talking about this in their debates? Oh, wait, considering who’s asking and answering the carefully scripted questions, why would they? As watchmen begin to expose the people, companies and even lawmakers behind this money and power grab, they could be considered dangers to the security of the United States, or engaging in belligerent acts. So too could the people who will protest in anger about the bank holidays, the overnight evaporation of their retirement accounts, and even the fire sale of national assets to manage the unmanageable and unsustainable debt. Their anger must be controlled in the name of national security.To be certain, their warnings will not be heard nor will protests be allowed from a detention facility.You know, the facilities that don’t exist?

Lies, Damned Lies & Enviro-Fraud

The greatest challenge facing mankind is the challenge of distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda. The late science writer Michael Crichton certainly put his finger on the spirit of our age.If you don’t believe Crichton was right, consider this. Our smartphones collate and spit out our diet of fast-news, while Twitter’s 140 characters provide much of our analysis. The 30-second sound-bite and 24/7 news is all we have time for, especially where the latest claims of transient science are concerned. Never has a generation been so vulnerable to superficial thought and, in consequence, the pro-activism of the propagandist social engineer; hence Crichton’s assessment. Step forward a pseudo-scientific movement with an agenda—and the very latest technology able to help them take advantage.
Remember the media furor in 2006 when astute bloggers—note, not paid journalists—exposed a photoshop of horrors? How it was that a Reuters photographer was able to Photoshop billowing smoke into a picture proving an Israeli airstrike had hit civilian targets? How the German newspaper Bildt and others ran a staged shot of an Israeli soldier carrying a dead girl—part of a Hezbollah PR stunt? How the New York Times front page ran a pic of a Pakistani family standing around an artillery shell in front of a derelict house—until it was pointed out the shell had clearly never been fired?

All kids stuff for today’s propagandist. Why use primitive techniques when you can utilise the latest state-of-the-art technology and compliant mass media organisations that share your agenda? Millions around the world admired the supreme photography of the BBC’s natural history flagship series Frozen Planet. Until, that is, a British newspaper exposé revealed how the BBC faked key sequences including the intimate filming of a polar bear and its cubs in the Arctic. Duped viewers could hardly believe it when they were told the sequence was actually shot in a Dutch zoo—and using fake snow. Writer and broadcaster David Attenborough was unrepentant, pointing out that, in fact, the BBC fakes it all the time.When other sequences from Frozen Planet were also revealed to have been staged, BBC bosses were forced to admit that staging shots was in fact standard practice. For a man billed as one of the world’s foremost environmental film-makers, Attenborough, as subsequent interviews revealed, entirely fails to see the irony of faking natural history and hood-winking viewers into believing that what they are watching is natural and in context. Come on, we’re making movies, pleads Attenborough. Unlike movies, however, BBC documentaries do not appear to carry fictional disclaimers.In November, an investigation by the Independent newspaper further discovered that the BBC has been selling airtime slots to climate crusading organisations in breach of its guidelines. One BBC World program was actually sponsored by green campaigners Envirotrade. Also, the BBC’s environmental analyst Roger Harrabin admitted that he had accepted £15,000 in grants from East Anglia University, the university at the heart of the Climate-gate scandal—a scandal on which Harrabin regularly reported without disclosing said payment.But the BBC is not alone in subscribing to a growing culture of environmentalist duplicity. In our book Energy and Climate Wars, Michael Economides and I drew attention to the growing lack of integrity running as a theme through the use of data and facts by many environmental campaigners. If you have not actually read any of the damning Climate-gate I and II leaked emails, you really should. It’s an education. Unfortunately, however, largely an education into how far publicly-funded environmental researchers are prepared to go in twisting, hiding, deleting, bullying and generally perverting facts and data. Examples of the culture of climate cons are mounting monthly. They include, Michael Mann’s iconic ‘hockey stick’ graph, a major expos√© of the ‚Äòconflict of interest’ culture within the UN IPCC, and of course, the finding by a British court of eight un-scientific statements in Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth.

Last year, Josh Fox’s Gasland movie was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary category as an expose of fracking in shale gas. However, many suggested it be moved to the Best Fiction category when it was revealed that, factually, Gasland’s amounted to fracking nonsense as process has been used safely in mining for 60 years; that the 1 percent of fracking fluid that is not water is well regulated; and, oh yes, that methane in faucet water is a fairly common, entirely harmless, phenomenon.Which brings us to Chevron’s upcoming criminal lawsuit against leading U.S. environmental scientists caught red-handed faking data and planning outright lies in their upcoming report. If it’s hard to believe, watch the video for yourself.The case involves the alleged proliferation of allegedly polluted groundwater leaking beyond the waste reservoir. Essentially, Dr Ann Maest, managing scientist at Straus Consulting, and ex-Harvard pal of President Obama, Stephen Donziger, are seen in the video agreeing to ignore their own data to enable them to win a landmark environmental case aimed at closing down an Ecuadorian mining and petroleum operation. While admitting their own evidence actually revealed they had no case, the two discuss drumming up enough local antagonism to prejudice the court case, while proposing their study amount to, smoke, mirrors and bullshit.

As a report by the New York Times in April 2011 pointed out, Dr Maest happens to be involved in another high-profile case: BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill investigation. Maest’s firm, it seems, is a long-term contractor with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The NOAA is, of course, heavily involved in providing data relating to climate change. Amazing as it may seem, Dr Maest has recently been reappointed by the National Academy of Sciences and is still being used by the current U.S. administration even though her work has been thoroughly debunked by an independent team of scientists.The French philosopher Jacques Ellul, in his definitive book on the subject, warned, The propagandist uses a keyboard and composes a symphony.When it comes to the shameful culture of enviro-spinning it seems they have adopted the art of sleight-of-hand and illusion, too.The Economist laments that the public has fallen out of love with environmentalism.
