Likewise, the apparent annual motion of the cluster would have been highly significant. The heliacal (near dawn) rising of the Pleiades in spring in the northern hemisphere has from ancient times augured the opening of the seafaring and farming season: while its dawn autumnal setting marked the season's end.And also Spring and fall are Bird migration seasons in Israel.It would not surprise me if Israeli wars are not fought around the time of the Pleiades-Orion happenings.The Bible contains three direct references to the Pleiades in Job 9:9 and 38:31, and Amos 5:8, and a single indirect reference in the New Testament. alpha Capricornids-Currently active-Active from July 3rd to August 15th, 2026-The alpha Capricornids are active from July 12 through August 12 with a "plateau-like" maximum centered on July 31st. This shower is not very strong and rarely produces in excess of 5 shower members per hour. What is notable about this shower is the number of bright fireballs produced during its activity period. This shower is seen equally well on either side of the equator. Perseids-Currently active-Active from July 17th to August 24th, 2026-The Perseids are the most popular meteor shower as they peak on warm August nights as seen from the northern hemisphere. The Perseids are active from July 17 to August 24.. They reach a strong maximum on August 12 or 13, depending on the year. Normal hourly rates seen from rural locations range from 30-50 shower members per hour at maximum. The Perseids are particles released from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle during its numerous returns to the inner solar system. They are called Perseids since the radiant (the area of the sky where the meteors seem to originate) is located near the prominent constellation of Perseus the hero. When at maximum activity. In 2026, the moon is new on August 12 so conditions are optimum for viewing this shower. Shower details - Radiant: 03:12 +58.1° - ZHR: 100 - Velocity: 37 miles/sec (swift - 59km/sec) - Parent Object: 109P/Swift-Tuttle-Next Peak - The Perseids will next peak on the Aug 12-13, 2026 night. Orionids-Next Peak night-Oct 21-22, 2026-Next period of activity: October 2nd, 2026 to November 7th, 2026-The Orionids are a medium strength shower that sometimes reaches high strength activity. In a normal year the Orionids produce 10-20 shower members at maximum. In exceptional years, such as 2006-2009, the peak rates were on par with the Perseids (50-75 per hour). Recent displays have produced low to average displays of this shower. Leonids-Next period of activity: November 6th, 2026 to November 30th, 2026-The Leonids are best known for producing meteor storms in the years of 1833, 1866, 1966, 1999, 2001 and 2002. These outbursts of meteor activity are best seen when the parent object, comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, is near perihelion (closest approach to the sun). Yet it is not the fresh material we see from the comet, but rather debris from earlier returns that also happen to be most dense at the same time. Unfortunately, it appears that the earth will not encounter any dense clouds of debris until 2099. Therefore, when the comet returns in 2031 and 2064, there may not be any meteor storms, but perhaps several good displays of Leonid activity when rates are in excess of 100 per hour. Each passing year also presents new possibilities from old debris fields. Geminids-Next period of activity: December 4th, 2026 to December 17th, 2026-The Geminids are usually the strongest meteor shower of the year and meteor enthusiasts are certain to circle December 13 and 14 on their calendars. This is the one major shower that provides good activity prior to midnight as the constellation of Gemini is well placed from 22:00 onward. The Geminids are often bright and intensely colored. Due to their medium-slow velocity, persistent trains are not usually seen. These meteors are also seen in the southern hemisphere, but only during the middle of the night and at a reduced rate. In 2025, the moon will have a waning crescent phase on December 13/14, which rises near 2am local standard time. Observations prior to this time will be moon-free. Observations after moon rise can still be successful by facing westward with the rising moon at your back. .Shower details - Radiant: 07:28 +33° - ZHR: 150 - Velocity: 22 miles/sec (medium - 35km/sec) - Parent Object: 3200 Phaethon (asteroid) -Next Peak - The Geminids will next peak on the Dec 13-14, 2026 night. Ursids-Next period of activity: December 17th, 2026 to December 26th, 2026-The Ursids are often neglected due to the fact it peaks just before Christmas and the rates are much less than the Geminds, which peaks just a week before the Ursids. Observers will normally see 5-10 Ursids per hour during the late morning hours on the date of maximum activity. There have been occasional outbursts when rates have exceeded 25 per hour. These outbursts appear unrelated to the perihelion dates of comet 8P/Tuttle. This shower is strictly a northern hemisphere event as the radiant fails to clear the horizon or does so simultaneously with the start of morning twilight as seen from the southern tropics.In 2025, a slender crescent moon will be present in the evening sky and will not interfere with viewing this shower.Shower details - Radiant: 14:28 +76° - ZHR: 10 - Velocity: 20.5 miles/sec (medium - 33.1km/sec) - Parent Object: 8P/Tuttle-Next Peak - The Ursids will next peak on the Dec 21-22, 2026 night. Quadrantids-Next period of activity: December 28th, 2026 to January 12th, 2027-The Quadrantids have the potential to be the strongest shower of the year but usually fall short due to the short length of maximum activity (6 hours) and the poor weather experienced during early January. The average hourly rates one can expect under dark skies is 25. These meteors usually lack persistent trains but often produce bright fireballs. Due to the high northerly declination (celestial latitude) these meteors are not well seen from the southern hemisphere. Predictions for 2027 show a peak near 3:30 UT on January 4th. This timing favors Europe and western Asia. The lunar conditions for this date are favorable as the thin waning crescent moon will not interfere with viewing meteor activity.Shower details - Radiant: 15:20 +49° - ZHR: 120 - Velocity: 25 miles/sec (medium - 40.4km/sec) - Parent Object: 2003 EH (Asteroid)-Next Peak - The Quadrantids will next peak on the Jan 3-4, 2027 night. Lyrids-Next period of activity: April 14th, 2027 to April 30th, 2027-The Lyrids are a medium strength shower that usually produces good rates for three nights centered on the maximum. These meteors also usually lack persistent trains but can produce fireballs. These meteors are best seen from the Northern Hemisphere where the radiant is high in the sky at dawn. Activity from this shower can be seen from the Southern Hemisphere, but at a lower rate. In 2027, maximum activity is predicted to occur at 1:41 UT on April 23rd. On this date the moon will be three days past its full phase, so conditions will be poor if you try to observe this activity.Shower details - Radiant: 18:04 +34° - ZHR: 18 - Velocity: 30 miles/sec (medium - 49km/sec) - Parent Object: C/1861 G1 (Thatcher)-Next Peak - The Lyrids will next peak on the Apr 22-23, 2027 night. The eta Aquariids are a strong shower when viewed from the southern tropics. From the equator northward, they usually only produce medium rates of 10-30 per hour just before dawn. Activity is good for a week centered the night of maximum activity. These are swift meteors that produce a high percentage of persistent trains, but few fireballs. In 2027, maximum activity coincides with a new moon, so circumstances are favorable for viewing this shower.Shower details - Radiant: 22:32 -1° - ZHR: 50 - Velocity: 40.7 miles/sec (swift - 65.4km/sec) - Parent Object: 1P/Halley-Next Peak - The eta Aquariids will next peak on the May 5-6, 2027 night. Following its final physics run, the accelerator has been switched off to begin CERN’s Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), a major programme of maintenance, consolidation, upgrades and installation work that will prepare the Laboratory for the High-Luminosity LHC (HiLumi LHC), the next phase in the exploration of the fundamental laws of nature.Since circulating its first beams in September 2008, the LHC has pushed the frontiers of science and technology, becoming one of the most ambitious scientific instruments ever built. The accelerator delivered its first proton collisions in 2009 and rapidly established itself as a unique discovery machine – across three operational periods (Runs 1–3), the LHC delivered unprecedented quantities of data to its experiments. The LHC’s most celebrated achievement came on 4 July 2012, when the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations announced the discovery of the Higgs boson, confirming a mechanism proposed nearly half a century earlier. Between now and 2030, the shutdown will involve thousands of specialists from CERN and partner institutes worldwide, who will transform the LHC, the injectors and their experiments into their HiLumi versions, and carry out essential renovation projects across the entire accelerator complex and experimental facilities: from the consolidation of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) North Area, the dismantling of the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso (CNGS) target area and the transformation of the Experimental Cavern North 3 (ECN3) into a high-intensity fixed-target facility, to the renovation of the ISOLDE facility and the consolidation of the personnel safety systems, electrical network and technical galleries.“The LS3 represents a huge and complex logistical and engineering undertaking,” says Jean-Philippe Tock, Head of the LS3 Coordination Team. “In the LHC alone, 1.2 km of magnets and components will be removed and replaced with new equipment, and across the whole complex, dozens of projects are planned, involving thousands of engineers, physicists, technicians and support personnel.” In the LHC caverns, the ATLAS and CMS experiments will undergo extensive upgrades, effectively becoming renewed detectors. To fully exploit the unprecedented performance of the HiLumi LHC, they will need to cope with between 140 and 200 proton–proton collisions in every bunch crossing, compared to around 60 during the last LHC run. This means identifying and selecting the most interesting collisions from more than five billion interactions every second. To meet this challenge, both experiments will completely replace their trigger systems, which are responsible for selecting the most promising events for further analysis. These events will be recorded using advanced new detector technologies, including all-silicon tracking systems with billions of readout channels (far more than in the current detectors), high-precision timing detectors with resolutions of a few tens of picoseconds, and new calorimeter systems capable of operating at megahertz rates.While no particle beams will circulate during this period, CERN’s scientific activity will remain intense. Thousands of researchers will continue analysing the vast datasets accumulated during the LHC era, extracting new physics results while simultaneously preparing the experiments for the challenges ahead.When the accelerator complex gradually restarts, from 2028, it will inaugurate a new era for high-energy physics. Building on the legacy of the LHC, the HiLumi LHC will provide unprecedented opportunities to deepen our understanding of the Universe and explore some of the most fundamental questions in science.

SHiP cycle intensity in the SPS from injection to flat-top at 400 GeV/c: red, below half-integer; blue, above half-integer; black, beam rigidity.The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) may have entered Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), but across the rest of CERN’s accelerator complex operations remain as busy as ever. The LHC injector chain continues to provide proton beams for a broad range of users, including the ELENA antiproton community, the East and North Area experiments and the n_TOF facility.This continuing operation is a reminder of the wealth of physics that can be performed with CERN’s accelerator complex. Even as the LHC is being prepared for its next chapter, the injectors are still supporting today’s physics programme, delivering beams to experiments that study antimatter, nuclear reactions, detector technologies, neutrino and astroparticle physics and many other areas of research at the frontiers of science.
HiRadMat rounds off its beam year-Alongside the standard operation of the LHC injectors, this week marks the final run of the year for the High Radiation to Materials facility (HiRadMat). This facility provides teams to test materials and equipment using intense beam pulses delivered by the SPS, reproducing the demanding conditions that accelerator components may face during operation.This final run includes a particularly important experiment for the CERN accelerator complex: a systematic study of a wide range of materials, including both well-established materials and others never before used as beam monitors. By determining their failure thresholds and characterising their behaviour under intense beam exposure, researchers aim to improve the reliability and robustness of beam monitoring throughout the accelerator chain.The study addresses a significant gap in the existing scientific literature and will provide valuable knowledge for the operation and design of present and future high-intensity accelerators. It is also a unique experiment that can only be performed using the SPS and the exceptional capabilities of the HiRadMat facility.Machine development: fine-tuning today, preparing for tomorrow-A busy machine development (MD) programme will also be running throughout the year. During MD periods, accelerator experts step away from routine beam delivery to optimise machine processes, perform special measurements, explore new beams and test new operational methods. These studies are where many future capabilities first take shape before becoming part of standard operation.One recent focus has been the future SPS Beam Dump Facility (BDF) which is being prepared within the HI-ECN3 project to serve a new general-purpose experiment, the Search for Hidden Particles, or SHiP. SHiP is designed to search for feebly interacting, long-lived particles predicted by many hidden sector models. Such particles could help explain open questions including dark matter, neutrino oscillations and the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe.To maximise SHiP’s physics reach and to make comprehensive searches at the MeV to GeV scale across many orders of magnitude in coupling, the SPS will need to operate at its intensity limit. The goal is to produce as many high-energy proton interactions as possible in the beam dump, which serves as the BDF production target.During recent weeks, SPS MD studies have tested prototypes of the future BDF production target installed in the TCC2 target cavern of the North Area. The most recent tests demonstrated the successful cooling of a tungsten target with gaseous helium while it was exposed to the impact of the 400 GeV/c proton beam.The intensity limit of the SHiP beam has also been explored further. A new cycle was commissioned at a new working point to stabilise the machine tune below the half-integer. This mode inherently stabilises the rigid bunch motion induced by resistive-wall wake fields, relaxing the stability requirements and allowing the maximum intensity to be pushed to a record 5.4 x 10^13 protons per cycle at 400 GeV/c (see Figure 1). The achieved transmission from SPS injection to flat-top was around 90%. The increased intensity could provide additional flexibility in future proton-sharing scenarios with SHiP operation.Figure 1 – SHiP cycle intensity in the SPS from injection to flat-top at 400 GeV/c: red, below half-integer; blue, above half-integer; black, beam rigidity.The 2026 MD programme has also investigated the future SHiP production supercycle in the SPS. In parallel, it demonstrated the use of new crystal technology to reduce beam loss on the SPS slow-extraction septa by more than a factor of four for future high-intensity operation of the North Area.This approach uses a specially designed goniometer that supports several crystals aligned with one another. The array repeatedly exploits the volume-reflection process in each crystal, an arrangement known as a multi-crystal volume-reflection array, or MVRA. The MVRA provides coherent and efficient deflection of protons that would otherwise hit the blade of the electrostatic septum and activate equipment in the SPS extraction straight section LSS2. Instead, these protons are steered towards the production targets of the North Area.Next up: ions for the North Area-The next major operational milestone is already close. In the middle of next week, the North Area is scheduled to begin its ion-physics programme, bringing lead beams to experiment users and opening another important chapter in this year’s accelerator schedule.So, while the LHC is in shutdown, CERN’s accelerator complex continues to do what it does best: deliver beams for today’s science, test the technologies needed for tomorrow and prepare new ways to explore the fundamental structure of the Universe.

12.4 By 2020, achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water and soil in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment

Means of implementation and the Global Partnership

60. We reaffirm our strong commitment to the full implementation of this new Agenda. We recognize that we will not be able to achieve our ambitious Goals and targets without a revitalized and enhanced Global Partnership and comparably ambitious means of implementation. The revitalized Global Partnership will facilitate an intensive global engagement in support of implementation of all the goals and targets, bringing together Governments, civil society, the private sector, the United Nations system and other actors and mobilizing all available resources.

61. The Agenda’s Goals and targets deal with the means required to realise our collective ambitions. The means of implementation targets under each SDG and Goal 17, which are referred to above, are key to realising our Agenda and are of equal importance with the other Goals and targets. We shall accord them equal priority in our implementation efforts and in the global indicator framework for monitoring our progress.

62. This Agenda, including the SDGs, can be met within the framework of a revitalized global partnership for sustainable development, supported by the concrete policies and actions outlined in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda , which is an integral part of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. The Addis Ababa Action Agenda supports, complements and helps contextualize the 2030 Agenda’s means of implementation targets. These relate to domestic public resources, domestic and international private business and finance, international development cooperation, international trade as an engine for development, debt and debt sustainability, addressing systemic issues and science, technology, innovation and capacity-building, and data, monitoring and follow-up.

63. Cohesive nationally owned sustainable development strategies, supported by integrated national financing frameworks, will be at the heart of our efforts. We reiterate that each country has primary responsibility for its own economic and social development and that the role of national policies and development strategies cannot be overemphasized. We will respect each country’s policy space and leadership to implement policies for poverty eradication and sustainable development, while remaining consistent with relevant international rules and commitments. At the same time, national development efforts need to be supported by an enabling international economic environment, including coherent and mutually supporting world trade, monetary and financial systems, and strengthened and enhanced global economic governance. Processes to develop and facilitate the availability of appropriate knowledge and technologies globally, as well as capacity-building, are also critical. We commit to pursuing policy coherence and an enabling environment for sustainable development at all levels and by all actors, and to reinvigorating the global partnership for sustainable development.

64. We support the implementation of relevant strategies and programmes of action, including the Istanbul Declaration and Programme of Action, the SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway, the Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries for the Decade 2014-2024, and reaffirm the importance of supporting the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the programme of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), all of which are integral to the new Agenda. We recognize the major challenge to the achievement of durable peace and sustainable development in countries in conflict and post-conflict situations.

65. We recognize that middle-income countries still face significant challenges to achieve sustainable development. In order to ensure that achievements made to date are sustained, efforts to address ongoing challenges should be strengthened through the exchange of experiences, improved coordination, and better and focused support of the United Nations Development System, the international financial institutions, regional organizations and other stakeholders.

66. We underscore that, for all countries, public policies and the mobilization and effective use of domestic resources, underscored by the principle of national ownership, are central to our common pursuit of sustainable development, including achieving the sustainable development goals. We recognize that domestic resources are first and foremost generated by economic growth, supported by an enabling environment at all levels.

67. Private business activity, investment and innovation are major drivers of productivity, inclusive economic growth and job creation. We acknowledge the diversity of the private sector, ranging from micro-enterprises to cooperatives to multinationals. We call on all businesses to apply their creativity and innovation to solving sustainable development challenges. We will foster a dynamic and well-functioning business sector, while protecting labour rights and environmental and health standards in accordance with relevant international standards and agreements and other on-going initiatives in this regard, such as the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the labour standards of ILO, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and key multilateral environmental agreements, for parties to those agreements.

68. International trade is an engine for inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction, and contributes to the promotion of sustainable development. We will continue to promote a universal, rules-based, open, transparent, predictable, inclusive, non-discriminatory and equitable multilateral trading system under the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as meaningful trade liberalization. We call on all WTO members to redouble their efforts to promptly conclude the negotiations on the Doha Development Agenda. We attach great importance to providing trade-related capacity-building for developing countries, including African countries, least-developed countries, landlocked developing countries, small island developing states and middle-income countries, including for the promotion of regional economic integration and interconnectivity.

69. We recognize the need to assist developing countries in attaining long-term debt sustainability through coordinated policies aimed at fostering debt financing, debt relief, debt restructuring and sound debt management, as appropriate. Many countries remain vulnerable to debt crises and some are in the midst of crises, including a number of least developed countries, small-island developing States and some developed countries. We reiterate that debtors and creditors must work together to prevent and resolve unsustainable debt situations. Maintaining sustainable debt levels is the responsibility of the borrowing countries; however we acknowledge that lenders also have a responsibility to lend in a way that does not undermine a country’s debt sustainability. We will support the maintenance of debt sustainability of those countries that have received debt relief and achieved sustainable debt levels.

70. We hereby launch a Technology Facilitation Mechanism which was established by the Addis Ababa Action Agenda in order to support the sustainable development goals. The Technology Facilitation Mechanism will be based on a multi-stakeholder collaboration between Member States, civil society, private sector, scientific community, United Nations entities and other stakeholders and will be composed of: a United Nations Interagency Task Team on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs, a collaborative Multistakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs and an on-line platform.

• The United Nations Interagency Task Team on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs will promote coordination, coherence, and cooperation within the UN System on STI related matters, enhancing synergy and efficiency, in particular to enhance capacity-building initiatives. The Task Team will draw on existing resources and will work with 10 representatives from the civil society, private sector, the scientific community, to prepare the meetings of the Multistakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs, as well as in the development and operationalization of the on-line platform, including preparing proposals for the modalities for the Forum and the on-line platform. The 10 representatives will be appointed by the Secretary General, for periods of two years. The Task Team will be open to the participation of all UN agencies, funds and programmes, and ECOSOC functional commissions and it will initially be composed by the entities that currently integrate the informal working group on technology facilitation, namely: UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations Environment Programme, UNIDO, United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNCTAD, International Telecommunication Union, WIPO and the World Bank.
• The on-line platform will be used to establish a comprehensive mapping of, and serve as a gateway for, information on existing STI initiatives, mechanisms and programmes, within and beyond the UN. The on-line platform will facilitate access to information, knowledge and experience, as well as best practices and lessons learned, on STI facilitation initiatives and policies. The online platform will also facilitate the dissemination of relevant open access scientific publications generated worldwide. The on-line platform will be developed on the basis of an independent technical assessment which will take into account best practices and lessons learned from other initiatives, within and beyond the United Nations, in order to ensure that it will complement, facilitate access to and provide adequate information on existing STI platforms, avoiding duplications and enhancing synergies.
• The Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science Technology and Innovation for the SDGs will be convened once a year, for a period of two days, to discuss STI cooperation around thematic areas for the implementation of the SDGs, congregating all relevant stakeholders to actively contribute in their area of expertise. The Forum will provide a venue for facilitating interaction, matchmaking and the establishment of networks between relevant stakeholders and multi- stakeholder partnerships in order to identify and examine technology needs and gaps, including on scientific cooperation, innovation and capacity building, and also in order to help facilitate development, transfer and dissemination of relevant technologies for the SDGs. The meetings of the Forum will be convened by the President of the ECOSOC before the meeting of the High Level Political Forum under the auspices of ECOSOC or, alternatively, in conjunction with other fora or conferences, as appropriate, taking into account the theme to be considered and on the basis of a collaboration with the organizers of the other fora or conference. The meetings of the Forum will be co-chaired by two Member States and will result in a summary of discussions elaborated by the two co-chairs, as an input to the meetings of the High Level Political Forum, in the context of the follow-up and review of the implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
• The meetings of the HLPF will be informed by the summary of the Multistakeholder Forum. The themes for the subsequent Multistakeholder Forum on Science Technology and Innovation for the SDGs will be considered by the High Level Political Forum on sustainable development, taking into account expert inputs from the Task Team.

71. We reiterate that this Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals and targets, including the means of implementation are universal, indivisible and interlinked.

Is China attempting to wrest control of Gold pricing from the paper-dominated west? Mike Maharrey-Money Metals Exchange-JUL 23,26

Several large Chinese banks have announced plans to halt retail paper gold trading. Could this be a coordinated push by China to exert more influence and break the Western grip on gold pricing? Last month, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) announced it would stop offering individual trading in precious metals linked to the Shanghai Gold Exchange effective July 24. ICBC ranks as the world’s largest bank by assets.Postal Savings Bank of China, Ping An Bank, and China Guangfa Bank have also announced plans to end paper gold trading.Paper trading involves “futures.” These are exchange-traded contracts between two parties who agree to buy/sell a set amount of gold at a predetermined price on a specific future date. At the end of the contract, the buyer can either roll the contract over into a new one or take delivery of the physical metal.Futures are used for hedging against price fluctuations and for speculating on market movements.Since most futures traders never take delivery of physical gold, there is far more paper than metal. If every investor holding a buy contract demanded delivery, there wouldn’t be enough gold to go around. The spot price is driven by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) morning and evening gold fixes.Meanwhile, the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) is the world’s largest physical spot gold exchange. Its activity centers on the physical delivery of bullion, unlike the COMEX, which is primarily a hub for moving paper. However, despite its size, the SGE has far less influence on global pricing.The World Gold Council picked up on an interesting trend in its H1 gold market analysis."Interestingly, intraday analysis suggests that the bulk of gold’s movements have been linked to activity during Asian and U.S. trading hours. Many of the pullbacks occurred during U.S. hours and, conversely, gold’s rebounds generally occurred during Asian hours."During Asian trading hours, gold was up 12.9 percent through the first six months of the year. During North American trading hours, the yellow metal was down 15 percent. European sessions split the difference, with gold falling modestly by 1.3 percent.This isn’t just a recent trend. We find that the gold price in Asian markets has typically outperformed the Western gold price for decades.Analyst Ed Steer argues that this reflects Western price manipulation through the paper markets.“This simple difference in investment strategy is all the proof needed that the world's banks and large commercial traders are actively managing the price between the a.m. and p.m. gold fixes in London -- and have been doing so since the paper market in gold first opened on 02 January 1975.”It’s not a leap to think that the Chinese would prefer to set the gold price and strip power away from the paper traders in the West.Risk management-Officials say Chinese banks are exiting paper futures trading to manage risk and prevent “speculative excesses.”“Chinese banks are tightening retail precious metals trading as a risk-control response to heightened price volatility,” State Street Investment Management gold strategist Robin Tsui told the South China Morning Post.Joshua Rotbart operates a precious metals firm with offices in Hong Kong and Singapore. He agreed, telling the Investing News Network that we shouldn’t take the move as a sign that China is “cooling on gold.”“What is being switched off is the speculative paper layer. This move reflects a distinction between leveraged paper trading and physical ownership.”Paper trading increases volatility because it can be moved so easily. Rotbart said Chinese banks have become increasingly concerned about leveraged retail products given the recent price swings.“When gold prices move sharply, leveraged paper products expose both the investor and the institution to greater risk. Discontinuing these products reduces operational and reputational risk while supporting broader financial stability.”It also shifts the pricing emphasis away from speculative paper toward the physical market. This would arguably mean a price better reflecting the market fundamentals as opposed to speculative soothsaying.Rotbart hinted that a more Asian-centric gold pricing regime could orient the market more toward physical gold.“Over time, this development may encourage greater emphasis on physical ownership rather than short-term leveraged speculation. It channels demand toward the metal itself rather than reducing it.”VRIC Media CEO Jay Martin said he doesn’t buy the official explanation. “I think that July 24th is the day that China starts finding out what gold is actually worth.”He pointed out that the paper market creates the illusion that there is far more gold than there really is, making it easy for paper traders to depress prices. “If there are 10 paper claims for every real ounce of gold, the market sees 10 times more gold than actually exists.”By removing this dynamic from the market, Martin argues we will find out “the real price of gold.”And he thinks it’s much higher than the LBMA fix indicates.Von Greyerz's partner Matthew Piepenburg agrees.“I've written ad nauseam for years about the COMEX and the LBMA markets, and how they legalize price manipulation and fraud legally, and China isn't stupid. Fast forward to 2026, China is saying for us to have more credibility, more trust, and more natural price discovery, we are now going to try and make the paper trade, which is an open secret that it's a lie; we're going to call the bluff on that. We're going to go focus more on physical supply and demand.”Piepenburg called it “another move in the direction toward true price discovery.”“What Shanghai and Hong Kong and China in the East are doing is anchoring the trade in something more valuable, actual supply and demand, less nonsense, less dishonesty, and that gives them more credibility.” It's impossible to know the true motives of Chinese players in the gold market. However, it doesn't really matter.Whether the Chinese government is intentionally trying to wrest control of pricing from the West or simply protecting its investors from volatility and market excess, the practical implications are the same. China is positioning itself to become a more influential player in gold pricing. The Chinese market is much more oriented toward physical bullion.Ergo, Asian pricing will likely more strongly reflect the value of physical metal as opposed to speculation about gold on paper. The Postal Savings Bank of China, Ping An Bank, China Guangfa Bank and China Construction Bank are taking similar actions.The banks have advised retail clients to close their positions, liquidate their holdings, sell or take physical delivery before the deadline. Its trading system is centered around the actual withdrawal and delivery of physical bullion.By curbing leveraged retail paper trading amid recent gold price volatility, Chinese financial authorities seem keen on risk management and reducing speculative excesses that could disrupt the financial system.Readers are well aware of the run-up to a record high price for gold above US$5,500 in January and the subsequent sharp pullback to the US$4,000 level.“Chinese banks have grown increasingly cautious about leveraged retail products following periods of heightened volatility and earlier losses borne by retail investors,” said Rotbart, whose precious metals company operates consulting and sales offices in four key cities including Hong Kong and Singapore, and facilitates secure physical bullion storage across 16 international locations.“When gold prices move sharply, leveraged paper products expose both the investor and the institution to greater risk. They view this as aligning with de-dollarization and central bank gold buying trends.Nations are quickly accumulating bullion as trust in fiat systems erodes amid rising global debt. Over the past four years, the World Gold Council (WGC) estimates that central bank gold accumulation has averaged 1,000 metric tons annually. That figure is double the average annual purchases over the preceding decade.According to the WGC’s Central Bank Gold Reserves survey, released in June, 45 percent of the record 76 reserve manager respondents expect their institution’s gold reserves to increase over the next 12 months.Jay Martin, CEO of VRIC Media, who believes the true price of gold is being suppressed by western paper markets, argues that in a market where paper claims frequently outnumber physical ounces, the current actions of China’s banks could potentially strain available supply and lead to another run on gold prices.In a July 18 episode of the Jay Martin Show titled “July 24: The Day China Reveals Gold’s Real Price,” Martin draws historical parallels to underscore the importance of Chinese banks stopping the retail paper trade for gold. That explanation is convenient, but I don’t believe it.
