The restriction prohibits all aircraft operations (including commercial, cargo and general aviation) and is effective from February 10 at 11:30 PM (MST) to February 20 at 11:30PM (MST),” the city said in a news release.“Airport staff has reached out to the FAA, and we are pending additional guidance.  In the meanwhile, commercial airlines operating out of El Paso are being informed of the restriction, which appears to be security related. Travelers are encouraged to contact their airlines to get the latest information on their flight status.”Closing off airspace over a major U.S. city is a rare action, and officials with the Federal Aviation Administration didn’t immediately respond to questions from El Paso Matters on the reasons for the action.A person familiar with the notices, who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly, said the action to close airspace over a major U.S. for security reasons over extended period hasn’t happened since immediately after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.“All air traffic has been halted in a 10 nautical mile range around the airport, so encompassing El Paso and Fort Bliss, from the ground to 17,000 feet. So no aircraft in or out, regardless of what they are, whether it’s air carriers, military, medevac helicopters, law enforcement. Nobody can fly as this thing is written up,” the person said.The notices include a phone number at the FAA’s Special Operations Support Center to call for more information. A man identifying himself as Eric spoke briefly to El Paso Matters late Tuesday and said he couldn’t explain the reason for the notices.“Not really, not because I won’t, it’s because I don’t know. I mean, this is just the office that publishes. So we’re handed the sheets and they say go with it,” Eric said.The restricted airspace covers most of El Paso County, but doesn’t include Mexican airspace, according to information provided by the FAA.It also includes a large area of southern New Mexico west of San Teresa, but not the airport in the suburb west of El Paso. Where things stand
• Person detained, home searched: Authorities are questioning a person who was detained in Rio Rico, Arizona, around 60 miles south of Tucson near the US-Mexico border, in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, and authorities are searching a car and a home. Her whereabouts remain unknown, according to a law enforcement source.
• Surveillance video: There was an uptick in calls to law enforcement after the FBI released doorbell camera footage from outside Nancy Guthrie’s front door taken the night she disappeared, showing a masked, armed person.
• Pleas for help: “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie posted another message from her family saying they believe their mother is still alive. The Guthrie family and authorities asked the public to submit any information to 1-800-CALL-FBI, 88-CRIME, 520-351-4900, or tips.fbi.gov.

Major developments in the Nancy Guthrie case came late Tuesday evening, with a person detained for questioning and a search warrant being executed at a home in Rio Rico, Arizona — which is about 60 miles south of Tucson near the Mexico border.Despite the developments, authorities have still not been able to locate the mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, a law enforcement source told CNN.

Here’s what we know:
Person detained: Law enforcement detained a subject for questioning, who was stopped during a traffic stop an hour’s drive south of Tucson, along the US border with Mexico. The detention is based on investigative leads, but the person has not been charged, a law enforcement official told CNN at the time. It’s not clear if the person is the same individual seen in surveillance footage released by the FBI earlier on Tuesday.
“Persons of interest”: Separately, FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency is looking at “persons of interest” in the case. He did not say who might be under suspicion, but said authorities were going through the process of elimination.
Search warrant: A search warrant is being executed at a home in Rio Rico. The road where the search is ongoing has been closed. A woman on the scene in Rio Rico told CNN that it was her home that was being searched. She said authorities were investigating her son-in-law, who she said was detained, but “he had nothing to do with (the case).” Authorities are also searching a car in Rio Rico.
Door cam footage: Earlier on Tuesday, the FBI released doorbell camera footage from outside Guthrie’s front door taken the night she disappeared, showing a masked, armed person. Engineers at Google, which owns the doorbell camera maker Nest, were able to recover data after several days.
Ongoing search: Sheriff’s deputies also canvassed the neighborhood of Annie Guthrie, one of Nancy Guthrie’s daughters, on Tuesday. Officers knocked on doors, asking residents whether they could look at their property. Nancy Guthrie was at Annie’s house for dinner the night before she was reported missing.

Iran security chief meets Oman ruler after US talks.

Muscat, Oman, Feb 10 (AFP) Feb 10, 2026-Iran's top security official met Oman's ruler in Muscat on Tuesday, days after a new round of talks there between officials from Washington and Tehran.Ali Larijani, who heads the Supreme National Security Council, and Sultan Haitham bin Tariq "discussed the latest developments in the Iranian-American negotiations", the official Oman News Agency said.Larijani was also due to meet Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who mediated Friday's indirect talks between US and Iranian officials.Larijani and Sultan Haitham also explored "ways to reach a balanced and just agreement between the two sides, and emphasised the importance of returning to the table of dialogue and negotiation".Larijani will head to Qatar after Oman, according to Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei.The trip comes after Iran and the United States resumed dialogue in Oman on Friday for the first time since the 12-day Iran-Israel war last June, which was briefly joined by the US military.

Over 4,500 IS detainees brought to Iraq from Syria: official.

Baghdad, Feb 10 (AFP) Feb 10, 2026-More than 4,500 suspected jihadists have been transferred from Syria to Iraq as part of a US operation to relocate Islamic State group detainees, an Iraqi official told AFP on Tuesday.The detainees are among around 7,000 suspects the US military began transferring last month after Syrian government forces captured Kurdish-held territory where they had been held by Kurdish fighters.They include Syrians, Iraqis and Europeans, among other nationalities.Saad Maan, a spokesperson for the Iraqi government's security information unit, told AFP that 4,583 detainees had been brought to Iraq so far.In 2014, IS swept across swathes of Syria and Iraq, committing massacres and forcing women and girls into sexual slavery.Backed by US-led forces, Iraq proclaimed the defeat of IS in 2017, while in neighbouring Syria the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces ultimately beat back the group two years later.The SDF went on to jail thousands of suspected jihadists and detain tens of thousands of their relatives in camps.In Iraq, where many prisons are packed with IS suspects, courts have handed down hundreds of death sentences and life terms to those convicted of terrorism offences, including many foreign fighters.This month Iraq's judiciary said it had begun investigations into detainees transferred from Syria.

US set to relinquish several senior NATO command posts.

Brussels, Belgium, Feb 9 (AFP) Feb 09, 2026-The United States will hand over two top regional commands in NATO to European countries, diplomats said Monday, as President Donald Trump presses allies to take greater responsibility for their defence.Washington will transfer leadership of NATO's Naples command, which focuses on the alliance's south, to Italy and leadership of its Norfolk command in Virginia, focusing on the alliance's north, to Britain, two diplomats at NATO said.The United States will meanwhile take over the command of NATO's maritime forces, based in the United Kingdom, the diplomats said."Allies have agreed on a new distribution of senior officer responsibility across the NATO Command Structure in which European Allies, including NATO's newest members, will play a more prominent role in the Alliance's military leadership," a NATO official said, without detailing the changes."The decision relates to planning for future rotations."The changes, first reported by French outlet La Lettre, will likely take months to be implemented, the NATO diplomats told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity."It's a good sign of burden shifting in practice," one of the diplomats said.The shuffling of NATO command positions comes as Washington has said it could reduce its defence presence in Europe to focus on other threats such as China.But military superpower Washington will still remain central as it will have control of NATO's core air, land and sea commands and retain the top position of Supreme Allied Commander Europe.European countries have already ramped up military budgets in the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and last year agreed to hike NATO's defence spending target.Trump has rattled faith in the reliability of the United States and last month plunged the alliance into crisis by making claims on Greenland.But US NATO ambassador Matthew Whitaker separately on Monday insisted that the US leader was looking to strengthen, rather than "dismantle", NATO by making Europe step up."We're trying to make NATO stronger, not to withdraw or reject NATO, but make it work like it was intended as an alliance of 32 strong and capable allies," Whitaker said. 

Fire at Iraq oil refinery kills one, injures 6.

Baghdad, Feb 9 (AFP) Feb 09, 2026-A fire at a key oil refinery killed one worker and injured six others on Monday in northern Iraq, authorities said.The fire erupted at an upgrading unit in the Baiji refinery, once the country's largest oil refinery, in Salaheddin province.The Iraqi government's security media unit said in a statement that firefighters had extinguished the fire.It added that "one worker was killed and six others were injured."Local official in Baiji city Adel al-Daj told AFP that the explosion was caused by a technical malfunction.The Baiji refinery, 200 kilometres (124 miles) north of Baghdad, was heavily damaged in some of the fiercest battles with the Islamic State group after it swept across a third of Iraq in 2014.After the facility's full rehabilitation, authorities reopened it in February 2024.Iraq is one of the world's biggest oil producers and crude oil sales make up 90 percent of budget revenues.

Somalia signs defence agreement with Saudi Arabia.

Mogadishu, Feb 9 (AFP) Feb 09, 2026-Somalia Monday signed a defence agreement with Saudi Arabia, as the Horn of Africa becomes an arena for proxy wars between Gulf monarchies, with Abu Dhabi at loggerheads with Riyadh.The region, strategically located between the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal on one of the world's busiest trade routes, has increasingly attracted the interest of the Gulf states.The agreement comes a month and a half after Israel recognised Somaliland, a self-proclaimed republic that seceded from Somalia in 1991 but which Mogadishu still considers to be under its control.Somali Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Khalid Bin Salman, signed a "military cooperation agreement" on Monday, according to a message on X from the Somali defence ministry."This agreement further strengthens defence and military cooperation between the two nations, while covering various areas of mutual interest for both countries," it said.In a separate post on X, Salman added he had "signed and witnessed the signing" of "several" agreements on the sidelines of a military exhibition in Riyadh.
