HERES HOW THE KINGS OF THE EAST GO ON DRY LAND TO ISRAEL.TURKEY CAN SHUT 22 DAMS OFF.AND DRY UP THE EUPHRATES AND TIGRAS RIVERS INSTANTLY. SO A 200 MILLION MAN ARMY CAN COME DOWN TO ISRAEL.
Turkey Dries Up the Euphrates-The crisis revolves around the Euphrates River, which quickly became the Euphrates Creek when Turkey completely cut off the water flow upstream of Syria, reported Al Akhbar on May 30. The Euphrates originates in Turkey and passes through the Atatürk Dam before flowing into Syria and Iraq. By cutting off the flow and directing it into the reservoir, Turkey has lowered water levels downstream.Water levels in Lake Assad, Syria’s largest body of water, have dropped by 20 feet since Turkey shut off the water supply. The Euphrates hydrates large parts of Syria.
When did Turkey dam the Euphrates river?
The construction began in 1983 and was completed in 1990. (7 YEARS) (THE FUTURE TRIBULATION IS ALSO 7 YEARS)-The dam and the hydroelectric power plant, which went into service after the upfilling of the reservoir was completed in 1992, are operated by the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ).

THE FINAL BATTLE IS ALL NATIONS COME AGAINST JERUSALEM TO STEAL IT FROM ISRAEL.BUT JESUS RETURNS TO EARTH BODILY, LITERAL TO DESTROY ALL THE WORLD ARMIES.AND RULE FOREVER FROM DAVIDS THRONE IN JERUSALEM.

19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
20 And the winepress was trodden without the city,(JERUSALEM) and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.(200 MILES) (THE SIZE OF ISRAEL)

REVELATION 19:15-21

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

20 And the beast (EU WORLD DICTATOR) was taken, and with him the false (VATICAN POPE) prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.(ISRAELS MIGRATION SEASON)

ISAIAH 2:1-4
1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
2  And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
3  And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4  And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Muhammad Iqbal’s ‘Anthem of the Muslim Community’By 5Pillars (RMS) - 14th August 2025

On Pakistan Independence Day, we feature the “Anthem of the Muslim Community” – a poem by Allama Muhammad Iqbal which emphasises Islam above nationalism.Written in 1910, it reflects Iqbal’s belief in pan-Islamism, emphasising the unity of the global Muslim Ummah under the values and teachings of Islam, with the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as its leader. This poem marks a shift from his earlier work which celebrated a unified Indian identity. In the poem Iqbal prioritises a global Islamic identity over nationalism, aligning with his support for the Muslim League and the Pakistan Movement.Iqbal’s poem is a rallying cry, urging Muslims to rise and continue their journey with the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as their guide.English translation of the Urdu poem-China is ours, Arabia is ours, India is ours, We are Muslims and the whole world is our homeland,The treasure of tawhid is in our hearts,It is not easy to wipe out our name and mark,The first house we have liberated from idols is the Ka’abah,We are its custodians, and it is our protector,We have grown up in the shadows of swords,Our mascot is the crescent shaped dagger,Our prayer calls have reverberated in the valleys of the west,The force of our flow could not be stopped by anyone,O the skies! We will not be subdued by falsehood,You have tried (our steadfasteness) a hundred times!O, the garden of Andalusia! do you remember those days-When our abode was the nest on your branches? O, the waves of Tigris! surely, you recognise us? Your river tells our tales even to this day, O, the pure soil of Makkah! We have bled and died for your honour,Our blood flows in your veins until now,The leader of our caravan, is the Prince of Hijaz (Muhammad),It is his name that keeps our heart in comfort and peace.Iqbal’s song is a clarion call,For the caravan to rise and continue the journey once more.

Palestinian National Charter-Resolutions of the Palestine National Council-July 1-17, 1968
The following is the complete and unabridged text of the Palestinian National Covenant, as published officially in English by the PLO*, based largely on the text adopted earlier in 1964.In his letter of September 9, 1993 to Prime Minister Rabin, Yasser Arafat stated that those articles which deny Israel's right to exist or are inconsistent with the PLO's new commitments to Israel following their mutual recognition, are no longer valid. Several of the key articles to be amended are highlighted below. On April 24, 1996, the Palestinian National Council, convening in Gaza, voted 504 to 54, with 14 abstentions, as follows:"The Palestinian National Charter is hereby amended by canceling the articles that are contrary to the letters exchanged between the P.L.O. and the Government of Israel 9-10 September 1993.Assigns its legal committee with the task of redrafting the Palestinian National Charter in order to present it to the first session of the Palestinian central council." (24/04/96) On December 14, 1998, the Palestinian National Council, in accordance with the Wye Memorandum, convened in Gaza in the presence of U.S. President Clinton and voted to reaffirm this decision.Draft Palestinian Constitution - March 2003
Text of the 1968 Charter:
Article 1: Palestine is the homeland of the Arab Palestinian people; it is an indivisible part of the Arab homeland, and the Palestinian people are an integral part of the Arab nation.
Article 2: Palestine, with the boundaries it had during the British Mandate, is an indivisible territorial unit.
Article 3: The Palestinian Arab people possess the legal right to their homeland and have the right to determine their destiny after achieving the liberation of their country in accordance with their wishes and entirely of their own accord and will.
Article 4: The Palestinian identity is a genuine, essential, and inherent characteristic; it is transmitted from parents to children. The Zionist occupation and the dispersal of the Palestinian Arab people, through the disasters which befell them, do not make them lose their Palestinian identity and their membership in the Palestinian community, nor do they negate them.
Article 5: The Palestinians are those Arab nationals who, until 1947, normally resided in Palestine regardless of whether they were evicted from it or have stayed there. Anyone born, after that date, of a Palestinian father - whether inside Palestine or outside it - is also a Palestinian.
Article 6: The Jews who had normally resided in Palestine until the beginning of the Zionist invasion will be considered Palestinians.
Article 7: That there is a Palestinian community and that it has material, spiritual, and historical connection with Palestine are indisputable facts. It is a national duty to bring up individual Palestinians in an Arab revolutionary manner. All means of information and education must be adopted in order to acquaint the Palestinian with his country in the most profound manner, both spiritual and material, that is possible. He must be prepared for the armed struggle and ready to sacrifice his wealth and his life in order to win back his homeland and bring about its liberation.
Article 8: The phase in their history, through which the Palestinian people are now living, is that of national (watani) struggle for the liberation of Palestine. Thus the conflicts among the Palestinian national forces are secondary, and should be ended for the sake of the basic conflict that exists between the forces of Zionism and of imperialism on the one hand, and the Palestinian Arab people on the other. On this basis the Palestinian masses, regardless of whether they are residing in the national homeland or in diaspora (mahajir) constitute - both their organizations and the individuals - one national front working for the retrieval of Palestine and its liberation through armed struggle.
Article 9: Armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine. This it is the overall strategy, not merely a tactical phase. The Palestinian Arab people assert their absolute determination and firm resolution to continue their armed struggle and to work for an armed popular revolution for the liberation of their country and their return to it . They also assert their right to normal life in Palestine and to exercise their right to self-determination and sovereignty over it.
Article 10: Commando action constitutes the nucleus of the Palestinian popular liberation war. This requires its escalation, comprehensiveness, and the mobilization of all the Palestinian popular and educational efforts and their organization and involvement in the armed Palestinian revolution. It also requires the achieving of unity for the national (watani) struggle among the different groupings of the Palestinian people, and between the Palestinian people and the Arab masses, so as to secure the continuation of the revolution, its escalation, and victory.
Article 11: The Palestinians will have three mottoes: national (wataniyya) unity, national (qawmiyya) mobilization, and liberation.
Article 12: The Palestinian people believe in Arab unity. In order to contribute their share toward the attainment of that objective, however, they must, at the present stage of their struggle, safeguard their Palestinian identity and develop their consciousness of that identity, and oppose any plan that may dissolve or impair it.
Article 13: Arab unity and the liberation of Palestine are two complementary objectives, the attainment of either of which facilitates the attainment of the other. Thus, Arab unity leads to the liberation of Palestine, the liberation of Palestine leads to Arab unity; and work toward the realization of one objective proceeds side by side with work toward the realization of the other.
Article 14: The destiny of the Arab nation, and indeed Arab existence itself, depend upon the destiny of the Palestine cause. From this interdependence springs the Arab nation's pursuit of, and striving for, the liberation of Palestine. The people of Palestine play the role of the vanguard in the realization of this sacred (qawmi) goal.
Article 15: The liberation of Palestine, from an Arab viewpoint, is a national (qawmi) duty and it attempts to repel the Zionist and imperialist aggression against the Arab homeland, and aims at the elimination of Zionism in Palestine. Absolute responsibility for this falls upon the Arab nation - peoples and governments - with the Arab people of Palestine in the vanguard. Accordingly, the Arab nation must mobilize all its military, human, moral, and spiritual capabilities to participate actively with the Palestinian people in the liberation of Palestine. It must, particularly in the phase of the armed Palestinian revolution, offer and furnish the Palestinian people with all possible help, and material and human support, and make available to them the means and opportunities that will enable them to continue to carry out their leading role in the armed revolution, until they liberate their homeland.
Article 16: The liberation of Palestine, from a spiritual point of view, will provide the Holy Land with an atmosphere of safety and tranquility, which in turn will safeguard the country's religious sanctuaries and guarantee freedom of worship and of visit to all, without discrimination of race, color, language, or religion. Accordingly, the people of Palestine look to all spiritual forces in the world for support.
Article 17: The liberation of Palestine, from a human point of view, will restore to the Palestinian individual his dignity, pride, and freedom. Accordingly the Palestinian Arab people look forward to the support of all those who believe in the dignity of man and his freedom in the world.
Article 18: The liberation of Palestine, from an international point of view, is a defensive action necessitated by the demands of self-defense. Accordingly the Palestinian people, desirous as they are of the friendship of all people, look to freedom-loving, and peace-loving states for support in order to restore their legitimate rights in Palestine, to re-establish peace and security in the country, and to enable its people to exercise national sovereignty and freedom.
Article 19: The partition of Palestine in 1947 and the establishment of the state of Israel are entirely illegal, regardless of the passage of time, because they were contrary to the will of the Palestinian people and to their natural right in their homeland, and inconsistent with the principles embodied in the Charter of the United Nations, particularly the right to self-determination.
Article 20: The Balfour Declaration, the Mandate for Palestine, and everything that has been based upon them, are deemed null and void. Claims of historical or religious ties of Jews with Palestine are incompatible with the facts of history and the true conception of what constitutes statehood. Judaism, being a religion, is not an independent nationality. Nor do Jews constitute a single nation with an identity of its own; they are citizens of the states to which they belong.
Article 21: The Arab Palestinian people, expressing themselves by the armed Palestinian revolution, reject all solutions which are substitutes for the total liberation of Palestine and reject all proposals aiming at the liquidation of the Palestinian problem, or its internationalization.
Article 22: Zionism is a political movement organically associated with international imperialism and antagonistic to all action for liberation and to progressive movements in the world. It is racist and fanatic in its nature, aggressive, expansionist, and colonial in its aims, and fascist in its methods. Israel is the instrument of the Zionist movement, and geographical base for world imperialism placed strategically in the midst of the Arab homeland to combat the hopes of the Arab nation for liberation, unity, and progress. Israel is a constant source of threat vis-a-vis peace in the Middle East and the whole world. Since the liberation of Palestine will destroy the Zionist and imperialist presence and will contribute to the establishment of peace in the Middle East, the Palestinian people look for the support of all the progressive and peaceful forces and urge them all, irrespective of their affiliations and beliefs, to offer the Palestinian people all aid and support in their just struggle for the liberation of their homeland.
Article 23: The demand of security and peace, as well as the demand of right and justice, require all states to consider Zionism an illegitimate movement, to outlaw its existence, and to ban its operations, in order that friendly relations among peoples may be preserved, and the loyalty of citizens to their respective homelands safeguarded.
Article 24: The Palestinian people believe in the principles of justice, freedom, sovereignty, self-determination, human dignity, and in the right of all peoples to exercise them.
Article 25: For the realization of the goals of this Charter and its principles, the Palestine Liberation Organization will perform its role in the liberation of Palestine in accordance with the Constitution of this Organization.
Article 26: The Palestine Liberation Organization, representative of the Palestinian revolutionary forces, is responsible for the Palestinian Arab people's movement in its struggle - to retrieve its homeland, liberate and return to it and exercise the right to self-determination in it - in all military, political, and financial fields and also for whatever may be required by the Palestine case on the inter-Arab and international levels.
Article 27: The Palestine Liberation Organization shall cooperate with all Arab states, each according to its potentialities; and will adopt a neutral policy among them in the light of the requirements of the war of liberation; and on this basis it shall not interfere in the internal affairs of any Arab state.
Article 28: The Palestinian Arab people assert the genuineness and independence of their national (wataniyya) revolution and reject all forms of intervention, trusteeship, and subordination.
Article 29: The Palestinian people possess the fundamental and genuine legal right to liberate and retrieve their homeland. The Palestinian people determine their attitude toward all states and forces on the basis of the stands they adopt vis-a-vis to the Palestinian revolution to fulfill the aims of the Palestinian people.
Article 30: Fighters and carriers of arms in the war of liberation are the nucleus of the popular army which will be the protective force for the gains of the Palestinian Arab people.
Article 31: The Organization shall have a flag, an oath of allegiance, and an anthem. All this shall be decided upon in accordance with a special regulation.
Article 32: Regulations, which shall be known as the Constitution of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, shall be annexed to this Charter. It will lay down the manner in which the Organization, and its organs and institutions, shall be constituted; the respective competence of each; and the requirements of its obligation under the Charter.
Article 33: This Charter shall not be amended save by [vote of] a majority of two-thirds of the total membership of the National Congress of the Palestine Liberation Organization [taken] at a special session convened for that purpose.* English rendition as published in Basic Political Documents of the Armed Palestinian Resistance Movement; Leila S. 300 Albanian Imams and scholars issue powerful pro-Gaza declaration-By Alen Basic - 29th August 2025

In the largest formal response from Balkan Muslims yet, prominent Albanian Muslim figures condemned Israel’s genocide in Gaza, in spite of the Albanian government’s continued silence. In a fierce statement released on Thursday, close to 300 Muslim leaders across Albania condemned Israel’s war in Gaza as a clear genocide. This declaration marks the strongest display of Islamic unity from the Balkans since October 7, 2023.The statement was signed by imams, scholars, academics, and community leaders, who accused Israel of “systematically targeting civilians.”“This is not a war; it is a genocide against a besieged people who have no means to defend themselves,” the declaration stated, adding that Israel was using starvation and famine as a weapon of war.A key theme of the declaration was calling out other Muslim-majority states and governments for failing to take decisive action in ending the war. With this, the declaration also staunchly criticised the Albanian government, for their inaction, silence, and increasingly friendly ties with the Israeli regime. The Albanian Muslim leaders said that “it is not enough to pray for Gaza, we must speak out, act, and stand firmly against oppression wherever it exists.”Albania’s ties with Israel -Albania was one of the first countries to recognise Israel, doing so on 16 April 1949.Analysts have frequently pointed to the historic bond between Albania and its Jewish community much of which later emigrated to Israel and settled on Palestinian land.Over 75 Albanians were awarded the “Righteous Among the Nations” title by Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial institution, for their actions in providing Jews with refuge from the Nazis in World War Two.Bako Goxhaj, a prominent pro-Palestinian activist in Albania, said that “Albania’s government has deepened ties with Israel without any concern about the Muslim community reaction.”Albania is a multi-religious yet Muslim-majority country, with Muslims making up 50.67% according to the 2023 census.Albanian historian Olsi Jazexhi from the International Islamic University of Malaysia said that “this declaration reflects growing frustration within Albanian civil society over the Albanian silence about (Gaza), and Prime Minister Edi Rama’s stance, as Tirana continues to fully cooperate with the Israeli regime.”Albanian PM Edi Rama. Source: Anadolu AjansiLast year, a report revealed that Albania was one of the top five suppliers of refined petroleum products to Israel, just after the U.S., Russia, and Brazil.Adding to the tensions, Muslim and pro-Palestinian Albanians criticised their government in September of last year after a video emerged of Albania’s chief Rabbi, Yoel Kaplan, celebrating the destruction of Gaza.Kaplan was also leading IDF troops in prayer in Israel. He is not an Albanian citizen and has admitted to the Middle East Eye that he fought in both Gaza and Lebanon. The declaration from Albania’s Muslim clerics has come amongst a wider shift across the Balkans, where Muslim communities in Bosnia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Montenegro have all organised mass protests and campaigns to stand in solidarity with the Palestinians.Unlike protests in much of Western Europe, those in the Balkans carry a different weight, as the attendees are directly driven by their not-so-distant memories of ethnic cleansing and war from the 1990s. For many in the Balkans, the plight of Palestinians mirrors their own memories of siege, mass killings, and displacement, less than 30 years agoLinking Albania’s history of suffering with Gaza-One of Albania’s leading pro-Palestine activists, Baki Goxhaj, stated that this historic declaration was largely driven by the fact that Albanian Muslims, much like the Palestinians, have suffered through various genocides and ethnic cleanings themselves.Since the Balkan Wars of 1912-1914, World War Two, right up to the 1990s, Albanian Muslims have experienced various attempts to erase their identity and religion from Europe. In 1999, in the village of Recak in Kosovo, Albanians bury those killed by Serb forces.Last month, Albanian Muslims across the world commemorated 80 years since the genocide in Chameria – a brutal case of ethnic cleansing at the hands of Greece.More recently, however, was the Kosovo war of 1998-1999, where the Serb Yugoslav forces also sought to ethnically cleanse the territory of Kosovo, then a semi-autonomous Yugoslav Republic seeking independence.“As Albanians, and especially as Muslim Albanians, we have suffered all war crimes, from the Greek genocide of Chameria to ethnic cleansing and massacres under Serbia and Montenegro, to the most recent massacres and ethnic cleansing in Kosova that was stopped in its tracks by Nato intervention,” Baki Goxhaj, an Albanian pro-Palestine activist, told Middle East Eye.Albanians also have a diasporic community in the Levant, as hundreds of families migrated to Ottoman Syria, Jordan, and Palestine, in the 19th and 20th centuries, known today as “Arnauts.”Ahmed Hilmi Pasha Abd al-Baqi (1882-1963) was the Prime Minister of the All-Palestine government in Gaza, established in 1948. He was also of Albanian origin and one of the most prominent Palestinian figures of his time. The statement from the Muslim leaders comes as a significant move for Albanian Muslims, as many pointed towards Prime Minister Edi Rama’s silence as a sign of a lack of concern for the country’s Muslim majority population.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels raid UN premises, detain at least 11 staff, envoy says-Yemeni security source says Iran-backed group arrested the humanitarian workers on ‘suspicion of collaborating with Israel’ after the Houthi prime minister was killed in a strike By AFP and ToI Staff 31 August 2025, 11:21 pm

The United Nations said Yemen’s Houthis detained at least 11 workers on Sunday in raids on UN premises, which came after rebel authorities had made numerous arrests following Israel’s killing of their prime minister. There has been no comment from Houthi authorities on the reported raids, but the Iran-backed group has previously arrested international aid workers. The United Nations envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said in a statement: “I strongly condemn the new wave of arbitrary detentions of UN personnel today in Sanaa and Hodeida… as well as the forced entry into UN premises and seizure of UN property.”He said that “at least 11 UN personnel were detained” and demanded that they be “immediately and unconditionally” released. The Houthis were already detaining 23 UN personnel, some since 2021 and 2023, he added. In January, the Houthi rebels detained eight UN workers. The Houthis claimed arrests made in June 2024 included “an American-Israeli spy network” operating under the cover of humanitarian organizations — allegations emphatically rejected by the UN.Earlier on Sunday, the World Food Programme said one of its staff members had been detained in the rebel-held capital Sanaa. It said it was “urgently seeking additional information” from the Houthi authorities, who seized the capital Sanaa in 2014 and now control large parts of Yemen.A security source in Sanaa told AFP that seven WFP employees and three UNICEF workers were arrested on Sunday after their offices had been raided. The WFP statement said that “the arbitrary detention of humanitarian staff is unacceptable. The safety and security of personnel is essential to carrying out life-saving humanitarian work.”Grundberg said the “arrests violate the fundamental obligation to respect and protect their (UN personnel) safety, dignity, and ability to carry out their essential work in Yemen.”A decade of civil war has plunged Yemen into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with more than half of the population relying on aid.The arrests last year prompted the United Nations to limit its deployments and suspend activities in some regions of the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country.‘Cowardly’ attack-On Saturday, a Yemeni security source told AFP that Houthi authorities had arrested dozens of people in Sanaa and other areas “on suspicion of collaborating with Israel.”It came after Israel’s strike on Thursday that killed the Houthis’ prime minister, Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi, along with other officials. The Iran-backed group on Sunday vowed to intensify its attacks on Israel after the killing of Rahawi, the most senior Houthi official known to have died since the group began attacking Israel and maritime traffic in November 2023, a month after the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre in southern Israel, prompting retaliatory strikes by Israel.A Sanaa resident, requesting anonymity for safety reasons, told AFP that striking a ministerial meeting was “cowardly and brutal,” expressing dismay at some in Yemen “who celebrate this violence.”Ali, another resident of Sanaa who gave only his first name, denounced “a blatant attack… against our country’s sovereignty.”A video posted online by a Yemeni comedian several hours after the announcement of Rahawi’s death has sparked uproar. The comedian, Mohammed al-Adrei, who presents himself as an adviser to Yemen’s internationally recognised government that the Houthis oppose, filmed himself dancing to festive music in traditional clothes.Writer Khaled al-Rowaishan responded on Facebook: “It is an absolute shame to celebrate the death of any Yemeni killed by Israeli missiles.”

IDF chief warns Hamas leaders abroad: ‘We'll reach them too’‘The face of Hamas’: Israel confirms terror group’s spokesman Abu Obeida killed-IDF says slain propaganda chief also incited terror in Arab world; Israeli cabinet meets in secure location amid fear of retaliation for Gaza airstrike, attack that killed Houthi PM-By Lazar Berman-31 August 2025, 5:33 pmUpdated at 6:25 pm

Israel declared on Sunday that notorious Hamas spokesman Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout, alias Abu Obeida, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City in the northern Gaza Strip a day earlier. The Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet initially said only that the Saturday strike had targeted a senior Hamas operative. Still, reports quickly identified the operative as the infamous terror group spokesman, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the identification at the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday. The outcome of the strike was unclear at first. Unnamed Israeli security sources had expressed cautious optimism as to Abu Obeida’s fate, before Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed Sunday that the strike had been successful. In a post on X, Katz wrote that the longtime spokesman “was sent to meet all the eliminated members of the axis of evil from Iran, Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen at the bottom of hell.”“Soon, as the campaign over Gaza intensifies,” Katz promised, “he will meet many more of his partners in crime there — Hamas murderers and rapists.”Shortly after Katz’s remarks, the IDF issued a statement confirming that Abu Obeida, whom it called “the face of the terrorist organization,” had indeed been the target of Saturday’s strike.“The operation was conducted jointly from the Shin Bet’s operations war room, in cooperation with the Southern Command, and was made possible thanks to prior intelligence gathered by the Shin Bet and Military Intelligence, which pointed to the hideout where the terrorist was located,” the IDF statement said. The military said that for the past decade, Abu Obeida “was responsible for the propaganda apparatus of Hamas’s military wing. In this role, he oversaw spokesperson operations across brigades and battalions, coordinated between political media elements and the military wing, and was the senior figure setting propaganda policy.”Hamas’s propaganda wing, said the IDF, “was responsible for distributing the atrocities of the October 7 massacre using footage captured by Hamas terrorists.”Abu Obeida’s outfit also spread videos throughout the Arab world seeking to incite acts of terror and distributed videos of hostages in Gaza, the military added. In separate remarks, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said the hit on Abu Obeida was the latest in “a series of significant IDF strikes in Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and other areas.”“This is not the end,” he chief said at a situational assessment in the Northern Command, where the IDF said he reviewed intelligence and discussed operational plans for the continuation of the Gaza campaign.“The bulk of Hamas’s ruling leadership that remains is abroad, and we will reach them too,” Zamir added, and reiterated that the IDF was “acting offensively, with initiative and operational superiority across all arenas and at all times.”Earlier on Sunday, Netanyahu had said at the opening of the weekly cabinet meeting that Israel had not yet been able to confirm if Abu Obeida had been killed.“The Shin Bet and the IDF struck the Hamas spokesman, the spokesman of the murderous evil organization, Abu Obeida,” he said.“We still don’t know the final outcome — I hope he is no longer with us — but I notice there’s no one to speak about this from Hamas’s side,” the premier quipped. “So, the coming hours and days will tell.”Abu Obeida had been the spokesman of Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, since 2004. He rose to prominence in 2006 when he announced the kidnapping of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. The always-masked Abu Obeida has since been the face of the terror group’s higher-profile statements and its psychological warfare.Abu Obeida’s last statement was issued on Friday evening, warning Israel that its planned offensive to conquer Gaza City would subject hostages in the area to the “same risks” as the terror group’s fighters. In light of the assassination of the Hamas spokesman, coupled with the strikes that killed the prime minister of the Houthi-led government, Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahwi, in Yemen last week, the cabinet was reported to have gathered for its weekly meeting in a secure alternative location out of fear of retaliatory attacks. At the meeting, Netanyahu said that the IDF “has already begun implementing” a recent cabinet decision “to defeat Hamas and bring back all of our hostages.” Those goals have long been the stated aims of the war in Gaza, but Netanyahu seemed to be referencing the decision to move ahead with the conquest of Gaza City by the IDF.Turning to last week’s strike on the Houthi political leadership, Netanyahu said that “in every one of his speeches, [Houthi leader Abdul-Malik] al-Houthi promises he will strike Israel, that he will destroy Israel. That’s written on their flag.”“That promise will not be fulfilled,” he promised. “But our promise — to strike the terror regime with increased force — is being fulfilled. And how is it being fulfilled. In a deadly blow, the IDF eliminated most of the Houthi government and additional military officials.”He said that Israel will continue working to assassinate senior Houthi officials: “This is only the beginning of the campaign targeting senior officials in Sanaa. We will reach all of them.”Netanyahu also boasted that the Western and Arab coalitions that have attacked the Houthis in the past were unable to achieve what Israel has, and said that ever since the 12-day war with Iran in June, Israel has been “striking the remaining parts of the axis systematically — day after day, front after front.”Nava Freiberg contributed to this report.

Air force targets underground Hezbollah bunkers in major strikes in southern Lebanon-Lebanese state media reports Israeli jets fired a ‘large number of missiles’; residents of northern Israel report hearing the explosions from dozens of miles away-By AFP and ToI Staff 31 August 2025, 2:54 pm

Israeli Air Force jets carried out a series of large-scale airstrikes against Hezbollah underground bunkers in southern Lebanon on Sunday morning, the IDF announced-The IDF said it struck the terror group’s “military infrastructure, including underground infrastructure” where the military had identified Hezbollah activity in the Beaufort Ridge area of the Nabatiyeh Governate.“The existence of the sites and the activity within them constitute a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon” that were reached in November, ending a period of open conflict, the military added.Lebanon’s National News Agency reported intense strikes in the wooded area of Ali al-Taher, where forest fires were later declared, and in Al-Debsha, where serious damage was recorded.According to NNA, jets fired “a large number of missiles,” with images showing thick columns of smoke rising into the sky.Residents of northern Israel reportedly heard the impacts of the strikes from dozens of miles away. The strikes came as the Lebanese government pledged to take steps to disarm Hezbollah, which has effectively controlled southern Lebanon for decades. Hezbollah has vowed not to surrender its weapons. The Lebanese government is expected on Sunday to come up with a plan to convince Hezbollah to disarm, US envoy Tom Barrack said Tuesday.Hezbollah began launching near-daily attacks on Israel border towns on October 8, 2023 — a day after fellow Iran-backed terror group Hamas invaded southern Israel, sparking the war in Gaza.Hezbollah’s rocket attacks displaced some 60,000 residents of northern Israel. In a bid to make it safe for them to return home, Israel in September stepped up operations in Lebanon, leading to two months of open warfare that ended with the November truce.Israeli troops have remained stationed in several points in southern Lebanon following a ceasefire with Hezbollah in November 2024. The IDF says it carries out strikes in response to violations of the ceasefire.

Australia condemns neo-Nazi-linked rally of ‘hate’ as thousands march against immigration-March for Australia says immigration tearing apart social fabric, causing economic distress; protesters seen clashing with police, who reportedly use pepper spray-By Samuel McKeith and Hollie Adams 31 August 2025, 2:54 pm

SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) — Thousands of Australians joined anti-immigration rallies across the country on Sunday, which the center-left government condemned, saying they sought to spread hate and were linked to neo-Nazis.March for Australia rallies against immigration were held in Sydney and other state capitals and regional centers, according to the group’s website.“Mass migration has torn at the bonds that held our communities together,” the website says. The group posted on X on Saturday that the rallies aimed to do “what the mainstream politicians never have the courage to do: demand an end to mass immigration.”The group also says it is concerned about culture, wages, traffic, housing and water supply, environmental destruction, infrastructure, hospitals, crime and loss of community.Australia — where one in two people is either born overseas or has a parent born overseas — has been grappling with a rise in right-wing extremism, including protests by neo-Nazis.“We absolutely condemn the March for Australia rally that’s going on today. It is not about increasing social harmony,” Murray Watt, a senior minister in the Labor government, told Sky News television, when asked about the rally in Sydney, the country’s most populous city.“We don’t support rallies like this that are about spreading hate and that are about dividing our community,” Watt said, asserting they were “organized and promoted” by neo-Nazi groups.March for Australia organizers did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the neo-Nazi claims.Laws banning the Nazi salute and the display or sale of symbols associated with terror groups came into effect in Australia this year in response to a string of antisemitic attacks on synagogues, buildings and cars since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel in which some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were murdered and which sparked the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.Australia has since said some of the local attacks were orchestrated by Iran.Counter protesters express ‘disgust,’ ‘anger’ Some 5,000 to 8,000 people, many draped in Australian flags, had assembled for the Sydney rally, the Australian Broadcasting Corp reported. It was held near the course of the Sydney Marathon, where 35,000 runners pounded the streets on Sunday, finishing at the city’s Opera House. Also nearby, a counter-rally by the Refugee Action Coalition, a community activist organization, took place.“Our event shows the depth of disgust and anger about the far-right agenda of March For Australia,” a coalition spokesperson said in a statement. Organizers said hundreds attended that event.Police said hundreds of officers were deployed across Sydney in an operation that ended “with no significant incidents.”A large March for Australia rally was held in central Melbourne, the capital of Victoria state, according to aerial footage from the ABC, which reported that riot officers used pepper spray on demonstrators. Victoria Police did not confirm the report but said it would provide details on the protest later on Sunday.Bob Katter, the leader of a small populist party, attended a March for Australia rally in Queensland, a party spokesperson said, three days after the veteran lawmaker threatened a reporter for mentioning Katter’s Lebanese heritage at a press conference when the topic of his attendance at a March for Australia event was being discussed.Katter was “swarmed with hundreds of supporters” at the rally in Townsville, Brisbane’s Courier-Mail reported. In Sydney, March for Australia protester Glenn Allchin said he wanted a “slowdown” in immigration.“It’s about our country bursting at the seams and our government bringing more and more people in,” Allchin told Reuters. “Our kids struggling to get homes, our hospitals – we have to wait seven hours – our roads, the lack of roads.”Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Trump said weighing plan to pay Gazans to leave, put Strip under US-run trusteeship-Proposal seeks to turn enclave into tech hub and offer Gazans $5,000 each to exit temporarily or permanently; US president reportedly pressing Netanyahu to hasten Hamas’s defeat By Nava Freiberg-31 August 2025, 9:22 pm

The Trump administration is weighing a proposal for the postwar reconstruction of Gaza that would put the Strip under US control for a decade and pay roughly a quarter of its population to relocate, many of them permanently, according to a Sunday report.Anonymous sources familiar with the process told The Washington Post that key aspects of the proposal were designed “to make real” US President Donald Trump’s expressed hope to turn Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”The plan would place the enclave under a US-run trusteeship for roughly 10 years, “until a reformed and deradicalized Palestinian Polity is ready to step in its shoes,” reported the Post, citing a 38-page presentation for the so-called GREAT Trust proposal — short for Gaza Reconstitution, Economic Acceleration and Transformation.During that 10-year period, the war-torn enclave would be rebuilt into a profitable tourism and tech manufacturing hub on the dime of public and private investors, who would fund “mega-construction projects” including electric vehicle plants, data centers, beach resorts and high-rise apartment complexes.Meanwhile, Palestinians would be encouraged to relocate outside the Strip. Those who choose to leave Gaza — either temporarily or permanently — would receive “a $5,000 cash payment and subsidies to cover four years of rent elsewhere, as well as a year of food,” according to the report. The plan assessed that around a quarter of Gaza’s more than two million residents would choose to relocate outside the territory during reconstruction. Of those, some 75 percent — numbering 375,000 people — would choose to permanently leave the enclave, the document said. The plan is based on financial models developed by a DC-based team from the Boston Consulting Group — which also worked with the main American contractor on the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. The consultants predicted a fourfold return on investments, which would total some $100 billion over the 10-year reconstruction period. They also suggested in the presentation that additional costs could be cut by encouraging more Gazans to emigrate and soliciting more international aid contributions.Once Gaza “is demilitarized and deradicalized, the Trust will transfer authorities to an independent Palestinian Polity,” which would eventually “join the Abraham Accords” — the normalization agreements brokered by Trump in his first term between Israel and several Arab states — the document said. The White House and State Department declined to comment to the Post, while BCG said the work on the trust plan had not been expressly approved and that two senior partners behind the modeling were subsequently fired.A person familiar with the planning told the newspaper that the document was completed in April “with only minimal change since then.” He further stressed that the plan is not “prescriptive, but is exploring what is possible.” Some aspects of the proposal were first reported by the Financial Times in July. The report comes after Trump’s White House huddle on Wednesday with officials — including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, former British prime minister Tony Blair and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner — to discuss how to end the Gaza war and future steps. The Sunday Times reported that Blair — who has been arranging a postwar Gaza plan for several months — told Trump during the meeting that Gazans “were desperate for new leadership and dreamt of becoming the next Dubai,” without citing sources.Trump souring on hostage talks, urges PM to quash Hamas-While he pushes ahead with postwar Gaza plans, Trump has reportedly lost faith in the efficacy of hostage-ceasefire deal negotiations and is now pressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hasten the defeat of Hamas, Channel 12 reported Sunday, citing unnamed sources. The president’s stance has reportedly emboldened Netanyahu to push for either the full military conquest of Gaza or a comprehensive deal strictly on Israel’s terms — despite security officials speaking out against such plans.Trump appeared convinced that Hamas could be decisively beaten, “perhaps even within two weeks,” and felt he had already fulfilled the mission of bringing home most of the hostages, especially after the May release of American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander, the report said. The network reported that Trump backed Witkoff’s efforts to negotiate a deal and was convinced negotiations would bear fruit in July, after Hamas returned to hostage talks and Qatari mediators reported optimism. But when Hamas toughened its position later on amid international outcry over reports of Gaza’s dire humanitarian situation, Trump “lost patience” with the terror group, the report said. Part of that frustration, according to the report, stemmed from a sense that he was undermined after mistakenly giving weight to Qatari optimism regarding a deal.Netanyahu also “fell into line” around the same time, the report said, and with Trump’s pivot, declared that the opportunity for a deal had passed, and ordered the Israeli delegation home from Doha.According to one source, even when Hamas returned two weeks ago with an approved proposal, Witkoff refused to engage, no longer trusting the Qataris and not wanting to risk embarrassing Trump.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Palestinian Authority condemns U.S. visa ban ahead of UN meeting to recognise state-By RobCarter - 30th August 2025

The Palestinian Authority has denounced the U.S. decision to revoke visas for Palestinian officials, including President Mahmoud Abbas, ahead of the UN General Assembly, as countries prepare to recognise Palestine’s statehood.“We express our deep astonishment at this decision and consider it a flagrant breach of the 1947 Headquarters Agreement, which guarantees the entry and protection of representatives of UN member states,” said Ahmed al-Deek, political adviser to the foreign minister.Signed between the UN and the U.S. in 1947, the Headquarters Agreement obliges Washington DC, to facilitate entry for representatives, staff, and experts of UN member states, regardless of political relations.Al-Deek urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and member states to resolve what he called a clear violation. He said Palestinian leadership would consult with friendly nations to determine appropriate diplomatic steps. He added the U.S. decision “will not stop the wave of recognition of the State of Palestine, nor the international consensus on the need to halt genocide, displacement, and annexation.”Meanwhile, the Palestinian Presidency expressed “deep regret and surprise” over the U.S. decision in a statement, declaring that the move “contradicts international law and the UN Headquarters Agreement,” noting that Palestine has observer status at the UN. The statement demanded that the US “reconsider and reverse its decision.”Deputy Palestinian President Hussein al-Sheikh echoed the call on X, saying: “We call on the United States of America to reconsider and reverse its decision to deny the Palestinian delegation entry visas to New York to attend the General Assembly meetings,” emphasising that the decision “is against international law and the rules and laws of the headquarters.”Earlier on Friday, the U.S. State Department said it was canceling visas for members of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) ahead of the UN General Assembly in September. The State Department said in a statement: “In accordance with U.S. law, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is denying and revoking visas from members of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) ahead of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.”U.S. Senator Tom Cotton supported the decision on X alleging the PLO pay terrorists.“The Palestinian Authority and Palestine Liberation Organisation pay terrorists to kill civilians, including Americans in Israel. The terrorists who run this pay-for-slay scheme have no business setting foot in the United States.”Several Western countries, including France and the UK, have already announced plans to recognise the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN meetings.Israel continues to occupy Palestinian territories and rejects a withdrawal that would allow for an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-1967 borders.Under a 1947 UN agreement, the US is generally required to allow access for foreign diplomats to the UN in New York. But Washington has said it can deny visas for security, extremism and foreign policy reasons. The death toll in Gaza has now risen to 63,025, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, which does not differentiate between civilians and combatants. It also reported five more malnutrition-related deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number during the war to 322, with 121 of them children. The war in Gaza was triggered when Hamas militants stormed into southern Israel on 7 October 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 others hostage.

Global Sumud Flotilla sets sail from Barcelona in bid to break Gaza blockade-By 5Pillars (RMS) - 31st August 2025

An international aid flotilla made up of activists, politicians and artists from more than 44 countries has set sail from the Spanish city of Barcelona toward Gaza, intending to break Israel’s blockade of the besieged enclave. The Global Sumud Flotilla, named after the Arabic word for “steadfastness,” is made up of approximately 20 boats that carry over 300 people, including doctors, journalists and campaigners. After leaving Barcelona, the ships will travel across the Mediterranean to Italy, Greece, and Tunisia.Barcelona, which severed all institutional ties with Israel earlier this year over the genocide in Gaza, served as the symbolic departure point.Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist; Irish actor Liam Cunningham; Spanish actor Eduardo Fernandez; and former mayor Ada Colau are among those who are on the vessel.‘Clear example of genocide’Speaking before departure, Thunberg described Gaza as “a clear example of oppression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing.”She continued: “Israel is killing, and the whole world is watching this genocide live. I am horrified to see people continue with their lives and act as if nothing is happening while watching genocide unfold live on their phones. Israel wants to wipe out the Palestinian people. If this does not push people to take action, get up from their couches, and organise, then I don’t know what will.”Thunberg argued that governments that remained silent were “as guilty as Israel itself” and insisted that “to reach Gaza and secure a humanitarian corridor, every possible way must be tried.”Asked about the risk of Israeli interception, she said: “We have a Plan B. To turn back and start again. This is a clean mission, a humanitarian mission.“There is nothing new we can say about Gaza. But every day, more people are waking up and realising the scale of Israel’s massacres and genocide. Today’s news is not that this flotilla is setting out, but rather how the world can remain silent and how politicians can betray and abandon the Palestinian people.”‘Gaza is a mirror reflecting all of us’Spanish actor Eduardo Fernandez said: “Whether we like it or not, Gaza is a mirror reflecting all of us. It is impossible not to take a position here. Every boat sailing toward Gaza is a cry for human dignity. This mission is not a threat; it is an act of humanity against barbarity. Silence is complicity. And silence kills as much as bombs do.”Irish actor Liam Cunningham shared the voice and image of a Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, calling on governments to act.“The international community and governments must impose sanctions on Israel to stop this genocide. What has happened so far – silence and inaction – reflects the world’s failure and marks a shameful period in history.”Colau, who as mayor pushed Barcelona to cut ties with Israel, said: “International civilian mobilisation has forced cowardly institutions – too afraid to act – to take a stand. Israel is killing children, humanity and international law. Gaza is not alone.”Activists Yasemin Acar, Thiago Avila and Saif Abukeshek underlined that the mission is “entirely peaceful and humanitarian,” stressing the urgency of action given what they described as the complicity and cowardice of international institutions.“This is a mission of solidarity. Why don’t governments act? Why is a humanitarian corridor not being opened? Sanctions against Israel must be imposed immediately. Ethnic cleansing in Palestine did not start 23 months ago – Israel has been committing ethnic cleansing since 1948. International civilian mobilisation will always stand with the Palestinian people.”Hundreds of people gathered at Barcelona port to wave off the flotilla, many waving Palestinian flags and chanting “Free Palestine” and “Boycott Israel.”The event drew wide coverage from the international press. The flotilla takes its name from Sumud, a concept that emerged among Palestinians after the 1967 Six-Day War to describe resilience and non-violent resistance through remaining on their land, keeping culture alive and building alternative institutions. In June this year Israel arrested 12 activists from the Gaza Freedom Flotilla aid ship Madleen (including many of the same activists on the current Sumud flotilla) in international waters to prevent them from reaching Gaza and breaking the siege. The activists were later deported to their home countries.

UAE opens pipeline to channel desalinated water from Egypt to southern Gaza-Project expected to provide clean drinking water to hundreds of thousands in al-Mawasi area, where many displaced Gazans reside-By Sue Surkes-31 August 2025, 2:54 pm

The United Arab Emirates on Friday opened a 7.5-kilometer (4.7-mile) pipeline to channel desalinated water from plants it has built in Egypt to the southern Gaza Strip, where nearly two years of war have devastated infrastructure and compounded already existing shortages of clean drinking water.Dubbed “Operation Chivalrous Knight 3,” the pipeline can carry a daily 7,570 cubic meters (two million gallons), according to a statement by the Emirati news agency, WAM.It is connected to the Al-Buraq reservoir in Khan Younis, which has a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters (1.32 million gallons) and is expected to provide clean water to hundreds of thousands of people in and around the al-Mawasi area on the coast of the southern Gaza Strip, where many of Gaza’s displaced residents reside.Work on the project began in July.Over the 22 months of war sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, assault on southern Israel, Gaza’s water access has been progressively strained.Limits on fuel imports and electricity have hindered the operation of desalination plants, while infrastructure bottlenecks and pipeline damage have restricted delivery to a trickle. Gaza’s aquifers are polluted by sewage and the wreckage of bombed buildings. Wells are mostly inaccessible or destroyed, according to aid groups and the local utility. The WAM statement said, “This milestone project builds on continuous Emirati efforts in Gaza, which have included establishing six desalination plants, providing reservoirs and tankers, and maintaining wells. It represents a vital lifeline for residents of the Gaza Strip and helps alleviate the water crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of displaced persons.”Agencies contributed to this report.

Egypt signs $35 bn gas deal with Israel amid ongoing genocide By Haris Tagari - 15th August 2025 (death cult newspaper)

Egypt has extended a massive gas deal with Israel until 2040, deepening its reliance on energy imports from its neighbour in the midst of Israel’s ongoing genocide. The agreement worth $35bn is with NewMed Energy, a partner in Israel’s Leviathan gas field, and expands a 2019 deal that originally ran for 60 billion cubic metres of gas.Under the new terms, Egypt will now import approximately 130 billion cubic metres over the next 15 years, making it the largest gas export agreement in Israel’s history. For activists the timing and scale of the deal highlight a deepening political contradiction. They argue it will further silence the Egyptian government’s criticism of Israel for at least the next two decades. Many see this as a strategic victory for Israel which gains both economically and politically. It secures a long term revenue stream, cements its position as a dominant energy exporter in the Mediterranean and binds the most populous Arab nation into a structural dependency.Map depicting gas pipelines connecting Israel and Egypt-Israel’s Leviathan and Tamar gas fields are connected to Egypt via an undersea pipeline to North Sinai.Egypt uses part of this gas domestically and re-exports the rest as liquefied natural gas from its Idku and Damietta facilities to European and Asian markets. This arrangement gives Israel leverage. It has previously halted exports for security and operational reasons, demonstrating its ability to disrupt Egypt’s supply when it chooses.Critics say this makes Cairo’s ability to apply meaningful pressure on Tel Aviv almost impossible.Egypt’s energy crisis-Egypt was once a net exporter of liquefied natural gas but has seen its own production fall sharply in recent years while demand has surged. The country’s population has passed 110 million and consumption has been driven higher by economic growth and rising living standards in urban areas.Repeated summer heatwaves have caused power shortages and rolling blackouts, crippling businesses and fuelling public anger. The situation has become politically sensitive with memories still fresh of how economic grievances helped trigger the 2011 uprising.President Abdel Fattah el Sisi’s government now views uninterrupted electricity as a matter of political survival.Energy imports, even from a state actively engaged in a war on Palestinians, are seen as a necessary price to avoid domestic unrest.President Sisi of Egypt-Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly confirmed the deal last week, describing it as an extension of the 2019 agreement.Speaking at his weekly press conference he said the deal will not affect Egypt’s firm and clear stance on Palestine or its rejection of any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause.Madbouly argued that Egypt is developing itself as a regional energy hub and that such commercial arrangements are not tied to its political positions. He said the country’s existing infrastructure, including its two liquefaction plants, makes it a natural centre for gas trade in the region.Liquidating opposition-These assurances have done little to silence critics. Many point out that Egypt’s historical role as the key Arab mediator in the Israeli Palestinian conflict is now undermined by its growing dependence on Israeli gas. Some argue that by locking in energy imports until 2040 Egypt has limited its diplomatic room for manoeuvre in ways that will benefit Israel for decades to come. The $35bn value of the deal dwarfs many other regional trade agreements and will be a significant driver of Israel’s economy. The timing during what many international observers have called a genocidal campaign against Gaza is seen by activists as especially damaging to Egypt’s credibility. The deal comes as Gaza faces near total devastation after almost two years of siege bombardment and mass civilian casualties.More than two million Palestinians are trapped in the enclave facing starvation and repeated displacements.Egypt has consistently opposed the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza into Sinai but campaigners question how strongly Cairo can maintain that position while deepening economic ties with Israel. For now the Egyptian government insists that its energy strategy and its political stance on Palestine are entirely separate. But with billions of dollars and decades of supply now at stake critics say Egypt’s independence on the Palestinian issue has never been more constrained.

Cross border seamless travel is closer than you think, but data rules need to catch up-Aug 25, 2025, 6:18 am EDT    | Louise Cairney

Picture this: no passport to dig out, no boarding pass to scan. You walk into the airport, look into a camera, and head straight to your gate. Your identity is confirmed, your documents are verified, and your journey begins without touching your wallet. This isn’t a futuristic fantasy. It’s the vision shaping the next generation of air travel. And while parts of it are already in motion, one big hurdle remains: data. The digital passport is ready just not fully ready for takeoff-At the heart of this transformation is the Digital Travel Credential (DTC), developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The DTC is a digital replica of your passport, securely stored and ready to be shared at the tap of a screen. But here’s the catch: the current version of the DTC packages all your passport information – name, number, nationality, date of birth – into one file. That works well for border agencies, who need the full picture. But airlines? They typically only require a few basic details to complete check-in and security screening.Sharing the entire passport file just to access your name and date of birth isn’t just inefficient and it’s a legal problem in many jurisdictions. Under data protection laws like the EU’s GDPR, collecting more personal information than necessary is a breach. So, while the technology exists to streamline your journey, the way it’s set up is slowing progress down. The solution: Give only what’s needed-The fix lies in a principle known as data minimization: sharing only what’s essential, no more. That means breaking your digital passport into encrypted “data envelopes.” Each envelope contains a single piece of information such as just your name, date of birth etc. When an airline needs to verify your age, they request that envelope and nothing else. The rest of your data stays sealed unless you explicitly consent to share it.This gives travelers control. Participation is voluntary and transparent. Refuse consent, and you fall back to the manual process we use today. Say yes, and your airport journey becomes seamless. There are two possible paths forward:ICAO could update the DTC standard to allow selective data release.Or, offer technical guidance to help implement data minimization within the existing framework.Either route would unlock huge efficiencies without compromising on privacy. By ICAO adapting the DTC or providing guidance so it can be implemented it in a way that allows secure, selective data sharing fully seamless travel will be closer to reality. The industry isn’t sitting still-While global standards take time to update, the aviation industry is already moving forward. Airlines, airports, and governments are piloting digital identity programs (using different forms of digital ID) and biometric journeys built around the principles of consent and minimal data use.IATA’s One ID framework is central to this momentum. One ID defines how a digital identity like the DTC can be used in practice: verifying passengers, securing consent, and enabling a paperless journey from curb to gate.Progress is accelerating:IATA has conducted successful trials proving that digital-first travel experiences are feasible today.Technology providers are developing digital wallets that integrate seamlessly with One ID.A transatlantic pilot is in the works, with countries exploring temporary agreements to enable cross-border trials of digital passports.Governments are taking notice, too. The European Commission, for instance, proposed new rules in late 2024 to support digital identity for cross-border travel across the EU. Meanwhile, the OECD is mapping national digital ID frameworks to help guide global policy and interoperability efforts. From vision to reality-Digital travel isn’t just an ambition it’s already happening.Take India’s Digi Yatra program. It’s live in over 20 airports and lets domestic passengers fly using only facial recognition linked to a verified digital ID. The entire journey, from terminal entry to boarding, is contactless and consent-based.Globally, biometric systems are operational in more than 70 airports, streamlining passenger flows and enhancing security. And to help airlines navigate this new landscape, IATA has created a Contactless Travel Directory, which maps out where these services are available.According to IATA’s 2024 Global Passenger Survey:Nearly half of passengers have already used biometric ID at the airport.Of those, 84% were satisfied with the experience. And 73% say they’d prefer biometrics over traditional passports and boarding passes in future. The demand is clear. The infrastructure is emerging. And the industry is building toward scale.Boarding soon-So while your face and phone aren’t quite enough to get you through the airport yet, the trajectory is set. The technical runway is ready. All that’s needed now is regulatory clearance – the DTC to support data minimization. The era of digital-by-default travel is approaching final call. And this time, you might not need your passport to board.

What to know about ‘aggressive’ EUDI timelines, with Fime’s Steve Pannifer-BU Podcast talks compliance, interoperability as EU regulations bring new pressures-Aug 29, 2025, 3:44 pm EDT    | Joel R. McConvey

It’s hard enough to try and remove friction from a single location, like an airport. Much more difficult is trying to remove friction from an entire continent. That’s what the EU is trying to do with its EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) program. By December 2026, member states are mandated to make wallets available to their citizens and businesses.Steve Pannifer, SVP of digital identity at Fime, says the complexity of what’s proposed make the timelines look mighty tight. “It’s not just about doing a wallet. It’s doing a wallet, and having it work within that emerging ecosystem.”“At the moment, no one’s blinking. But someone’s going to have to, because, from where I sit, it’s highly unlikely everything will be in place by next year.”Can everything come together, in every corner of the EU? And will people choose to use it? Listen below or on your favorite podcast platform to hear Steve Pannifer’s insights on what to expect from governments, credential issuers and businesses as Europe speeds toward the EUDI Wallet deadline, how payments provides a model; what role testing labs play in making sure things work; and why it all boils down to adoption.

US airports embrace biometric, digital IDV technology to improve travel efficiency-Aug 29, 2025, 2:04 pm EDT    | Masha Borak

The aviation industry is becoming a victim of its own success: As travel numbers rise, airports are coming under severe pressure to process an increasing number of people. The solution is more investments in technology, says air transportation tech firm SITA, and airports are increasingly heeding that advice. More than half of the world’s top-10 airports have already started digital journeys to improve efficiencies, compensate for resource shortages and gain an advantage over competitors – including with biometric technologies.Airlines, airports, and governments are piloting digital identity programs (using different forms of digital ID) and biometric journeys built around the principles of consent and minimal data use. Here is what’s new at U.S. airports when it comes to technological advances.Hawaii’s largest airport is introducing Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP), a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) project that uses biometric technology from iProov to take auto-capture photos of arriving U.S. citizens, expediting their screening. The technology has reduced wait times for U.S. citizens by an average of 25 percent and processing time by 74 percent. The Hawaiian Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is joining 14 other airports offering EPP. The airport has also signed an agreement to allow Japanese tourists to use easy entry options like Mobile Passport Control and Global Entry.Alaska Airlines is introducing an option for passengers to verify their identity at its automated bag drop units in Seattle and Portland.Travelers can use their boarding pass QR code to print out their bag tags at the firm’s self-service Bag Tag Station or Kiosk. After that, passengers can proceed to the Automated Bag Drop Unit, which scans the bag tag as well as the traveler’s photo ID and face. Photos taken for ID verification are deleted after the biometric matching process is completed.Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is also investing in new technology. The airport is preparing 110 new concession contracts aimed at easing frustrating passenger experiences. Some of these will be used to increase comfort with dedicated sleeping zones and technology-driven retail, while others will introduce speedier biometric scanning.Chicago is also planning to build a satellite concourse during the construction of a global terminal that would replace what is now Terminal 2, according to the Chicago Sun Times.Earlier this month, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) launched a biometric gates pilot with an identity verification system developed through a public-private partnership with Clear. The testing will be conducted at three U.S. airports.

ELFT shows improvements in latent fingerprint biometrics accuracy-Entries from ROC, HiSign, Innovatrics, Dermalog, Tech5 set new highs-Aug 29, 2025, 1:04 pm EDT    | Chris Burt

The latest Evaluation of Latent Fingerprint Technologies (ELFT) by NIST shows further gains in the accuracy and speed of the top-performing latent fingerprint biometrics matching algorithms. An algorithm submitted by ROC this month scored the lowest Rank-5 search error rate recorded, at 0.0194 for all probes, and 0.0035 for those with EFS data. This is important, the company says, because this is how forensic examiners work with latent fingerprint biometrics in practice.Innovatrics, Dermalog, Tech5 and HiSign have each had an algorithm evaluated for ELFT since the beginning of March. For the FBI’s Solved Dataset #1, HiSign currently has the lowest False Non-Identification Rate (FNIR) at a False Positive Identification Rate (FPIR) of 0.01, at 0.0213, followed by Idemia’s algorithm submitted earlier this year at 0.0484, and then the new entry from Innovatrics, at 0.0543.The results for DoD Dataset #1, both in FNIR at FPIR 0.01 and Rank-5 FNIR, where ROC finished second, were similar.ROC touts speed, nationality considerations-ROC’s new algorithm completed the comparison with the second-lowest mean mated search duration, at 386 seconds, bested only by the algorithm it submitted in February.  While that algorithm delivered significantly improved accuracy compared to the company’s previous submission, the new one reaching an FNIR of 0.0969.ROC Co-founder and Chief Scientist Dr. Brendan Klare notes the geographic makeup of the top performers in the ELFT.“With each improvement, law enforcement and intelligence missions move closer to tools that truly serve their needs,” says Klare. “Investigators can now search larger databases faster, widening search parameters and ensuring no potential lead is left behind… All powered by American-built technology that breaks the multi-decade, foreign grip on U.S. government biometric systems.”

DRC digital ID phased deployment underway following contract do-over-PPP to bridge digital, financial divide hailed-Aug 29, 2025, 1:03 pm EDT    | Masha Borak

The collaboration between Singaporean technology firm Trident and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on implementing the DRC’s national digital identification system has been hailed by the Singaporean government as an example of successful collaboration between the Asia-Pacific financial center and Africa. Some experts, however, are warning that the Nasdaq-listed company could face controversies due to the DRC’s opaque political environment as well as technical and operational issues caused by its underdeveloped infrastructure.Earlier this week, Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, highlighted the DRC Pass digital identity system at the Africa Singapore Business Forum 2025.“The platform will enhance financial inclusion and improve public service delivery for over 110 million DRC citizens,” Fu said during a keynote address. “It is a good example of how Singapore companies work with African partners to bridge the digital divide and promote financial inclusion.”In June 2025, Trident Digital Tech signed a public-private partnership agreement with the DRC government, launching the DRC Pass and naming the Singaporean firm as the exclusive provider of electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) services for the country with over 110 million people. The DRC Pass is based on blockchain identity platform Tridentity and allows Congolese citizens to access government services, register SIM cards by linking their biometrics and verify their identities for digital payments and credit risk assessments. The phased deployment of DRC Pass is already underway. Trident, however, could run into controversy if checks and balances are not put into place, according to the Centre for African Studies (CAS) in Singapore, established by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Business Federation (SBF).“The danger is that unless the terms of the contract are made public, this project could end up getting caught in yet another vortex of controversy and corruption,” says the organization. The DRC regularly scores in the lowest rungs of global indexes on corruption, while the country’s instability often fuels governance crises, according to Transparency International. This has also affected the country’s identity-related projects.Last year, DRC cancelled a US$697 million contract to set up a biometric national identity system and deliver ID cards held by Afritech, with Idemia as a technology supplier. The price tag for the ID system and supporting infrastructure ballooned to $1.2 billion, three times higher than the original estimate from the Congolese government. The World Bank declined to finance the project, citing the absence of a competitive tender process. The decision was taken after warnings of funding irregularities from a government watchdog, the Centre for African Studies explains in a blog post.“Questions were also raised about Afritech’s planned $593 million contribution, with concerns that the financing would be difficult to secure from commercial banks without a sovereign guarantee, potentially putting the Central Bank of Congo’s assets at risk,” the organization writes. The DRC Pass project is facing other obstacles. The Sub-Saharan country is the 11th largest in the world and its government views infrastructure development as its primary challenge on the path of digitalization. The state has therefore established a Universal Service Fund (USF) to support infrastructure development in areas where consumers have limited access to telecommunication services. The fund collects contributions from telcos operating in Africa.Despite challenges, digitalization is a fundamental priority for the country, according to Augustin Kibassa Maliba, the DRC’s Minister of Post, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs.“This digital identity would serve as the first step towards comprehensive e-government services, with a particular focus on digitalising land and property records initially,” Kibassa Maliba said in an April interview with Govinsider. The digital identity system is expected not only to speed up the digitalization of the Central African country but also create more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs in digital technology, cybersecurity, administration and services, the Minister adds.“While the current collaboration centres on digital identity, both parties see potential for future expanded cooperation across various digital transformation initiatives, contingent on the success of the initial stages,” says Kibassa Maliba. In collaboration with the private sector, the country is working on setting up data centers to store citizen data securely. The first phase of the first data centre was launched earlier in August by OADC Texaf Digital, a joint venture between African data centre company Open Access Data Centres (OADC) and Belgian investment company TEXAF.

In-car face biometrics can help stop sleepy, distracted drivers from crashing-‘Attention support features’ get warm reception from drivers-Aug 29, 2025, 1:00 pm EDT    | Joel R. McConvey

AI chatbots are turning out to be dubious companions, but automated systems for monitoring drivers’ alertness could turn out to be welcome travelling companions. Automakers are integrating biometrics into the cabin as a safety measure to cut down on deadly crashes caused by drowsiness or distracted driving. Refinements are needed, but drivers, on the whole, seem happy to have the biometric systems. Most Subaru drivers like face monitoring system-Drivers don’t want to fall asleep at the wheel. So says data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which shows that most Subaru owners whose cars come equipped with the company’s DriverFocus system keep it switched on – because it makes them feel safer.A blog from the IIHS says, in a survey of 3,500 drivers of Subaru models with the biometric monitoring feature, 9 out of ten use it “most or all of the time,” and a majority say they want it in the next vehicle they purchase.Subaru’s DriverFocus uses an in-cabin camera to detect signs of distraction and drowsiness, which are major causes of accidents. Are the driver’s eyes open? Are they directed at the road? Monitoring these factors can help avoid crashes, and the 4,000 U.S. road fatalities in 2023 that were attributed to distracted or drowsy driving. The DriverFocus system is among an array of “attention support features” that are finding their way into drivers’ cars. Some analyze steering patterns and lane deviations. Others are strictly based on face biometrics.“We do a lot of things behind the wheel almost unconsciously, without thinking that they’re unsafe,” says IIHS Research Scientist Aimee Cox, who led the research. “But those seemingly benign actions can pull our attention away from the road and increase the risk of crashing.”Ford publishes patents for ultrawideband radar, facial recognition-Ford is among automakers exploring such systems. The company has published a new patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) outlining an idea for an in-cabin biometric system using ultrawideband radar, and another for a facial recognition system. In the first, “a plurality of radar data streams from a respective plurality of ultrawideband (UWB) radars in a passenger compartment of a vehicle, generate a combined radar data stream by averaging the radar data streams together, measure a biometric characteristic of an occupant of the passenger compartment based on the combined radar data stream, and actuate a component of the vehicle based on the biometric characteristic.”Language in the facial recognition patent is similar. While driver safety monitoring is an application, Ford Authority says the possibilities for biometrics go far beyond that: it “could be used to start the vehicle or activate certain features, and could be tailored specifically from user to user, based on their own unique preferences.”Make alerts less annoying by going haptic-Some drivers prefer not to have biometric monitoring turned on. According to IIHS, a small percentage of their Subaru drivers clicked the system off. But even then, complaints were more about detail than core function: “alerts were annoying and too frequent, and most drivers reported that they sometimes received false alarms when they weren’t actually drowsy or distracted.”Other complaints addressed false alarms when performing normal actions, like changing lanes or adjusting radio controls. IIHS cites separate research suggesting that “shifting from audible warnings to haptic alerts like steering wheel vibrations makes drivers less likely to find them annoying.”Up-up-down-down-left-right-open: handle code unlocks biometric entry-Stellantis is also pursuing biometrics patents for its vehicles. Mopar Insiders says the automaker has been granted a USPTO patent for “a system and method for accessing a vehicle with a biometric key.” That method would be face biometrics, which would authenticate a driver and unlock the car through facial recognition. The system, however, is not frictionless. Per the blog, “the door handle acts as the activation point. If the person lifts the handle in a specific sequence – think three lifts, a pause, four lifts, another pause, then two more lifts – the system wakes up. Once activated, the camera takes a picture of the person’s face and sends it to a controller, which compares it to stored images of preauthorized users.”Stellantis imagines the system as useful in emergencies, when keys and phones are lost, and one has only their face, a sophisticated camera and a complex series of coded hand movements to save them.

In rare find, Israeli archaeologists discover intact 4,000-year-old lamp wicks-While commonly in use during Bronze Age, wicks usually do not survive as they either were burned or decompose in soil-By ToI Staff 31 August 2025, 12:29 pm

Israeli archaeologists discovered rare preserved lamp wicks believed to be some 4,000 years old during excavations for a new neighborhood in Yehud, in central Israel, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced on Sunday. The wicks, which are among the oldest discovered in the world, are a rare find, the IAA said in a study they published in ATIQOT on Tuesday, because wicks were either burned while in use or have decomposed in the soil, especially in Mediterranean climates. When they do survive and are discovered in archaeological digs, they cannot be definitively classified as wicks unless they are found in lamps because they are otherwise indistinguishable from scraps of material.Although wicks were a common product in the ancient world, IAA researchers Dr. Naama Sukenik and Dr. Yonah Maor said in the statement that it was “a unique discovery that we did not expect could ever be found in the moist Mediterranean climate,” adding that “these wicks are among the few of their era known to us in the world.”The IAA’s three wicks were found in oil lamps from Newe Efrayim tombs dated to 2500-2000 BCE. The researchers said this was because oil lamps were commonly placed in tombs at the time.Excavation directors Dr. Gilad Itach, Yossi Elisha, and Yaniv Agmon explained that “while these lamps must have been used to illuminate the underground dark burial space during the burial ceremony itself, it seems that this was not their only function.”“The fire burning in a lamp has been associated with magical power since the dawn of humankind, thanks to its ability to provide light and heat, and its ability to transform materials in various ways, including burning, melting and firing,” they said. They added that while there are no writings from the era in Israel, sources from the Near East “demonstrate the central role of fire in burial ceremonies. Just like today, thousands of years ago, the fire burning in a lamp symbolized the human soul.”Two of the wicks were found while their lamps were undergoing preliminary cleaning after their excavation, and a third was discovered during conservation work at the IAA’s laboratories. The wicks were made of woven textile, which the researchers believed was linen due to common practice in the era and linen’s higher efficacy for burning, but the researchers stressed that they could not be sure. They did say, however, that the wicks bore evidence that  they were originally part of garments that had been mended multiple times before being cut down to be used as wicks. One of the wicks was burned on both ends, leading researchers to believe that it had failed to light.

Situation 'critical' as Fort Providence ordered to evacuate-Hay River ready to welcome evacuees from Fort Providence; wildfire is 2 kms from community-Avery Zingel · CBC News · Posted: Aug 31, 2025 11:09 AM EDT |

The community of Fort Providence, N.W.T., has been ordered to evacuate as of 8:57 a.m. on Sunday.Community members are asked to leave immediately to Hay River. Residents needing transportation should meet at the community arena. An evacuation alert had been put in place on Saturday. According to an update from N.W.T. Fire on Sunday morning, the wildfire grew significantly overnight driven by severe northerly winds. The fire is now two kilometres north of Fort Providence.N.W.T. wildfire information officer Mike Westwick called the fire situation critical. The fire moved 11 kilometres overnight due to "extraordinary conditions."The government's wind speed monitors showed little to no wind in the community this morning, but that could change by this afternoon, as northerly winds are expected to push the fire closer to the community.Westwick said it could reach the community this evening. "We are concerned about the wind forecast for later today," he told CBC News. Fort Providence is the second N.W.T. community ordered to evacuate in recent days. On Friday, Whatı̀ residents were told to evacuate due to a nearby wildfire. Many people from the community of about 600, roughly 250 kilometres northwest of Yellowknife, have gone to the capital city or Behchokǫ̀.Whatı̀ residents displaced by fire turn to community in difficult times-The community of Jean Marie River, which has been watching a nearby wildfire since early July, issued an evacuation notice on Saturday, which means people should have their personal belongings ready in case the situation changes..Focus on protecting buildings-Structure protection specialists were in Fort Providence several days ago and installed sprinklers and a water cannon on the community's edge.Homes on the perimeter of Fort Providence are outfitted with sprinklers to mitigate potential losses, Westwick said."We're working to do everything we can to protect that community and efforts will continue throughout the day," he said.Crews have soaked structures along the edge of the community. Aircraft have been unable to attack the fire because visibility is too poor to fly. Extreme winds and the size of the fire made it unsafe to attack this fire with crews, Westwick said. The fire will be hit with air tankers as much as possible but the focus now is structure protection on the ground because the head of the fire is too wide to directly attack with crews.Incident management is on site in Fort Providence.Hay River ready for evacuees-Fort Providence Mayor Danny Beaulieu told CBC Saturday night that buses were on the way to the community of 700 people to transport residents without vehicles.Hay River's fire department is on standby in case the fire reaches the community of Fort Providence, Beaulieu said.In a Facebook post on Sunday, the Town of Hay River said it's ready to welcome evacuees. A reception centre is set up at the Hay River Community Centre, with staff from Hay River Health and Social Services."Basic accommodation, food, recreation, programming, and fire information services will be provided at the community centre," the post said.Anyone from Fort Providence who is in Yellowknife can register at the Fieldhouse, the Dehcho's MLA told CBC News. The Fieldhouse is already closed to the public to host evacuees from Whatı̀.A smoky highway.Westwick said the mayor and his team are "highly, highly experienced and efficient in keeping their folks safe." "They're working tirelessly right now to coordinate that evacuation and keep people safe," he said.Westwick urged evacuees to follow directions from the community government to ensure an orderly evacuation."The fire activity is critical in the area and it is important that you stay calm, that you collect your things and you make an orderly exit out of the community. That's going to be the safest, safest thing for anybody there right now."Highway closure-Highway 3, the highway running north to Yellowknife from Fort Providence, was closed Saturday afternoon due to wildfire activity, and remains closed Sunday morning.A spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure confirmed at 11:30 a.m. Sunday that travellers are able to travel north from Enterprise, then west on Highway 1 in the direction of Fort Simpson and Fort Liard; however, it remains closed at the Highway 3 junction, north to Fort Smith and Yellowknife.Highway 3 is open for evacuees travelling south from Fort Providence, but not for travellers heading north. The Deh Cho Bridge, which crosses the Mackenzie River on the way to Hay River, has periodically been down to one lane due to construction, but Mayor Beaulieu confirmed it is currently open to two lanes of traffic. An employee at Big River gas station in Fort Providence confirmed to CBC News that it is still open and will remain open unless they're told to close. He said they have plenty of gas and supplies. He said more than 200 people have gone through the station since Saturday afternoon.Big River and the Fort Providence Northern Store are the only two places to get gas between Behchokǫ̀ and Enterprise. Arlene Evans, the manager of the Northern Store, said at 11 a.m. Sunday that they had just locked the doors, as she and her husband prepared to leave for Hay River.Evans said firefighters were in the store just before she closed, and she gave them free slushies. Evans called the situation "pretty serious.""We just hope everybody is safe and getting out," she said.Despite highway closures, Westwick said "evacuees will be able to get where they need to go" and highway staff will ensure their safe passage.

Wildfire leads to evacuation alert, closures near B.C.'s Bugaboo Park-Regional District of East Kootenay issues alert for Bugaboo Falls Recreation Site and other areas in park-Akshay Kulkarni · CBC News · Posted: Aug 31, 2025 1:10 PM EDT |

A wildfire has led to evacuation alerts and closures for the popular Bugaboo Provincial Park in B.C.'s East Kootenay region on Sunday. An evacuation alert was issued late Saturday night for three civic addresses and multiple areas of the park, including the Bugaboo Falls and Bugaboo Septet recreation sites and CMH Lodge, by the Regional District of East Kootenay. The core areas of the Bugaboo Provincial Park were already closed due to flooding damage a little under two weeks ago, after nearly 60 campers and hikers had to be evacuated via helicopter. Now, B.C. Parks says on its website that a nearby wildfire is growing quickly, and the agency anticipates closures of more sections of the park as a result."This will lead to closures of Bugaboo Provincial Park and other areas," the agency said. "Please do not visit the area at this time."The wildfire is burning just southeast of the park, which has historically been popular for its rugged climbs and landscapes, and the B.C. Wildfire Service says as of Sunday morning it is not currently threatening any structures.CBC News has reached out to B.C. Parks to find out if any campers were in the area when the evacuation alert was issued. An evacuation alert means that people in the area should be ready to leave at a moment's notice, while an evacuation order means people should leave immediately. The B.C. Wildfire Service said on its website that the fire is estimated at around 150 hectares in size, and is suspected to have been sparked by lightning.Officials had warned of significant fire risk heading into the long weekend in B.C., as hot and dry conditions were set to combine with lightning strikes and potentially create new wildfires.A special air quality statement due to wildfire smoke covers a large swath of north-central B.C., including the Cariboo, Chilcotin and Prince George areas. The province says that, as smoke levels increase, people should limit time outdoors and keep windows closed indoors if possible."Protect your indoor air from wildfire smoke. Actions can include using a clean, good quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air cleaner that can filter fine particles," the advisory reads. On Thursday, an evacuation alert was issued for a large area near Tsetzi Lake by the Cariboo Regional District, which covers one structure, due to a nearby wildfire.

Rogue waves are little known and can kill. Here's why they're so dangerous-Noah Mintz was able to move again after being hit by a rogue wave. He wants people around him to be aware-Philip Drost, Joan Webber · CBC Radio · Posted: Jan 07, 2025 4:00 AM EST | Last Updated: August 15

A large wave.It was supposed to be a relaxing day full of tacos, swimming and watching people surf. But it nearly ended in tragedy. Noah Mintz was on a trip to Sayulita, Mexico, with an ex-girlfriend, and went for a swim at the beach. The water seemed fine. As he was heading back to shore, the water just below knee-deep and the ocean to his back, he was knocked down by what was likely a rogue wave."I was just lying straight down in the water, face down, unable to move," said Mintz, 54, of Toronto. "I just thought to myself, 'This is it. This is the moment. I'm going to die right now.'"A rogue wave is characterized as one that's 2.2 times larger than the average wave around it. They can be deadly, and catch people by surprise. They can happen when sea swells collide and merge to create a bigger wave, according to research published by National Geographic.According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, rogue waves can also be created in a storm, when regular waves move against the typical direction of the current and merge with others to form one large and long-lasting wave.Though the number of rogue waves is difficult to quantify — no organization tracks them or injuries from them — Mintz is far from the only one to experience their power. One of the largest-ever recorded rogue waves was just off the coast of B.C.Johannes Gemmrich, who studies these waves, says there needs to be more awareness about what they can do.Most people imagine a rogue wave as something that might hit a cruise ship or a shipping vessel in the middle of the ocean. But they're more than that, he says."I think most people are not aware of rogue waves, especially not that it also can occur in the coastal area where most people interact with the ocean," said Gemmrich, an oceanographer at the University of Victoria. The power of the wave-As Mintz was face down in the water, he recalled key moments from his life, wanting to find the perfect one to focus on as he died.Fortunately, he didn't need to. Instead, his ex was able to find him in the water and flip him over. He was then hoisted onto a surfboard and taken to shore, paralyzed but conscious. "I know not to turn your back to the ocean, but I wasn't really thinking that," said Mintz. His neck was broken in two places, along with some scrapes and cuts. After surgery and a few months of rehabilitation, he was able to make a full recovery, aside from some minor nerve damage on his left side.He was able to re-emerge relatively unscathed from his experience. But that's not always the case. A massive wave slammed Ventura Beach in California last week, sending eight people to hospital. But was it actually a rogue wave? About That producer Lauren Bird breaks down the science of rogue waves and why they’re so unpredictable.Mary MacNutt, Tassie Notar and another friend were on vacation in Chacala, Mexico, in December 2023. They had just arrived, and MacNutt and Notar, who were 66 and 70 at the time, wanted to go for a swim. There were some waves, so the pair decided to move down the beach to find a calmer area. But as Notar and MacNutt, both from Toronto, enjoyed the sun and the ocean, a large wave started coming their way. "This wave was an aberration. This wave was a monster wave," said Notar, who estimates it was about four metres tall. "It was so high. And we both turned and immediately started swimming to shore."They didn't know what to do. The wave was coming quickly, and they weren't close enough to shore to make it back. After the wave hit, Notar couldn't find her friend. She ran to the beach, screaming for help, but no one moved. Then she turned to see someone administering CPR to MacNutt on the beach."We didn't know then, but she was already a quadriplegic," said Notar.Weeks later, she was airlifted to Toronto. She needed support to breathe, and they were told it wasn't likely she would get better. She asked to be taken off life support, and died on Jan. 7, 2024. "The whole time she kept reassuring me. She said, 'I've had a really good life. Don't worry, I've had a really good life.'"What could be done? Notar wonders what else they could've done when they saw the wave, and if there was a way to avoid it.Gemmrich, the oceanographer, says if it's far away, he says, you can try to make it to shore. But even that is difficult, because it moves much faster than any swimmer can."The best way is to actually dive into it. So wait till it comes close or retreat slowly, but when it comes close, dive into it, because the force reduces with depth there."And instead of trying to avoid it, Gemmrich says the answer is early detection. Early warning system-The study of rogue waves started in the 1990s, when one such wave was measured by a drilling platform with scientific equipment. Before that, they were considered to be tall tales told by sailors."Even scientists thought that it's not possible to have a wave that's twice as high as the background wave," said Gemmrich. A massive wave submerged a California beach. Was it a rogue wave? Research into rogue waves picked up in the early 2000s. In 2020, what's considered by some to be the most extreme rogue wave ever recorded measured in at 17.6 metres high, off the coast of Ucluelet, B.C., far above the average six-metre waves around it.Gemmrich has studied that particular wave. He says a rogue wave tends to happen once every few days, but if it's small, or if there are no people or boats nearby, no one notices. And while the risk of that forming at a height and location that would cause danger to people is small, Gemmrich says it's important people are prepared. That's why he's been developing an early warning system. It can't predict where and when a rogue wave will form exactly, but it can anticipate when conditions are ripe for one.It takes the predicted wind patterns for the upcoming few days, along with the physics of ocean waves. It can then predict the generation and evolution of the wave field. He wants it to be implemented into regular forecasts."That model is now running as a research model and it will be transferred to Environment and Climate Change [Canada] in the near future for bringing it into the public forecast domain," said Gemmrich.Notar wishes there had been better signage when she and MacNutt had gone swimming. She's still pushing for better signs near the resort where they stayed, specific to rogue waves. "A rogue wave, to me, I think if people don't know what it is, it sounds scary. And it's different than a red flag on a beach," said Notar.Mintz learned from the experience. He isn't afraid of the ocean and is still willing to go for a dip. But he's a little more cautious at the beach. "Like dealing with a wild animal, it's completely unpredictable. And you never turn your back to the ocean until you're out of it."

Pakistan floods: Over 800 dead in monsoon devastation-By Muhammad Siddeeq - 31st August 2025

In what is being described as one of the worst floods in the history of Pakistan, a third of the country has been left under water and the lives of over 33 million people devastated with millions left in need of urgent assistance. In a catastrophic turn of events, Pakistan’s eastern provinces have been struck by unprecedented flooding over the past 48 hours, resulting in more than 800 confirmed deaths and displacing over a million people. The relentless monsoon rains have overwhelmed rivers and drainage systems, submerging villages, destroying infrastructure, and leaving communities grappling with the aftermath.Pakistan’s Minister for Climate Change, Sherry Rehman, described the emergency as “a crisis of unimaginable proportions,” estimating that one-third of the country is currently underwater.Over 33 million people — nearly one in seven Pakistanis — have been affected by the flooding.A report by Reuters has noted that the country received nearly twice the typical rainfall in its latest quarter, with the result that one-third of the nation is submerged.Widespread destruction in Punjab-The province of Punjab, the country’s agricultural heartland, has borne the brunt of the disaster. Over 1,400 villages have been inundated, with floodwaters sweeping through homes, fields and roads. The situation has been exacerbated by water releases from Indian dams, intensifying the flood’s impact. The provincial government has declared a state of emergency, and rescue operations are ongoing, though challenges persist due to the scale of the disaster.Flood waters have forced the closure of Sialkot international airport near the Indian border, requiring all flights to divert to Lahore.Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds-The human toll of the floods has been staggering. In the past 48 hours alone, at least 321 people have lost their lives, with the majority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that entire villages have been destroyed, and rescue teams are working tirelessly to reach stranded survivors. However, the vastness of the affected areas and the challenging terrain have hindered relief efforts.Relief and aid agencies are warning that the stagnant floodwaters have created a breeding ground for waterborne diseases. Reports indicate rising cases of cholera, hepatitis, and other infections in the affected regions. In Pakistan’s rural areas, health facilities that were already considered under-funded and inadequate have been left completely overwhelmed; there is now an urgent need for medical supplies and personnel to address the growing health crisis. The flooding has wreaked havoc on Pakistan’s agriculture, destroying crops and killing thousands of livestock. Farmers are counting their losses as fields remain submerged, and the prospects for the upcoming harvests look bleak.Experts are warning that the economic ramifications are likely to be severe, with livelihoods shattered and food security threatened.International response and challenges-The international community has expressed solidarity with Pakistan, offering aid and assistance. However, geopolitical tensions have complicated the situation. The release of water from Indian dams without prior warning has been a point of contention, with Pakistan accusing India of deliberately exacerbating the impact of the floods.Experts warn that such actions could inflame relations between the two historic adversaries and hinder cooperative disaster management efforts. When the floodwaters begin to recede, the long road to recovery lies ahead. Rebuilding infrastructure, restoring livelihoods, and addressing the humanitarian needs of the affected populations will require concerted efforts from the government, civil society, and international partners for some time to come. The disaster serves as a stark reminder, however, of the vulnerabilities faced by communities in flood-prone areas and the urgent need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and climate adaptation strategies. In the coming days, meteorologists have warned that the situation remains critical, with more heavy rainfall expected in southern Punjab, Sindh, and northern Balochistan.Pakistani authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders to minimise further loss of life. The devastating floods in Pakistan have underscored the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness, improved infrastructure, and greater regional cooperation in managing shared water resources. As the nation grapples with the immediate aftermath of the emergency, the focus must shift towards long-term recovery and resilience-building to mitigate the impacts of future disasters. For those looking to assist, humanitarian organisations are coordinating relief efforts, and donations can be made through various channels to support the affected communities. As Pakistan navigates this unprecedented crisis, the resilience of its people and the solidarity of the international community will be pivotal in overcoming the challenges ahead.International assistance-Whilst many friendly countries around the world have pledged support for Islamabad in its hour of need, several countries have already begun sending much-needed supplies to Pakistan. The United Arab Emirates has dispatched 3,000 tonnes of food supplies, plus medical supplies, tents, and shelter materials. The Emirates Red Crescent society is also helping coordinate the relief efforts.Pakistan’s traditional ally Turkey has sent seven planeloads of relief — food, tents, medical kits — and also begun delivering aid via two cargo trains. In addition, Pakistan’s giant neighbour China, has dispatched large volumes of relief goods via four cargo planes and provided emergency cash assistance of approximately 100 million Yuan (roughly USD 14.5 million) through its Red Cross Society.

Cholera cases explode across Sudan as bloody conflict grinds on By RobCarter - 23rd August 2025

The World Health Organisation (WHO) warns that a catastrophic cholera outbreak in Sudan is spiralling uncontrollably this year, claiming nearly 1,100 lives since January and afflicting almost 49,000 others, overwhelming an already crippled healthcare system amid a brutal conflict. All of Sudan’s 18 states have reported cholera cases, WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva, adding: “Over 100,000 cases and more than 2,741 deaths have been reported since July 2024.”He said: “48,768 cholera cases and 1,094 deaths have been reported from 1 January to 11 August 2025.”Darfur has been particularly hard-hit since the first case was reported in South Darfur on 29 May 2025. “The disease has now spread to 28 localities across all five Darfur states.”According to the spokesperson, 6,491 cases and 130 deaths have been reported, and 52% of all deaths in the Darfur states were reported from South Darfur State. He said efforts are underway to urgently launch a cholera vaccination campaign in priority localities of South Darfur.El Fasher in North Darfur is suffering a “severe humanitarian and public-health crisis” driven by siege, displacement, and food shortages, with cholera adding pressure on limited services, Lindmeier noted.Nationwide, 38% of health facilities are nonfunctional and 62% are only partially working, he added. He said that child vaccination rates have dropped from more than 90% in 2022 to just 48%. Meanwhile, nearly 20,000 children have been admitted to stabilisation centres this year for severe acute malnutrition with complications.WHO has verified 177 attacks on health care facilities since April 2023, leading to 1,176 deaths and 362 injuries. Lindmeier said WHO continues to deliver supplies and support health centres, but access remains severely restricted. The south is starving-At least 46 people, mostly women and children, have died from malnutrition in Sudan’s South Kordofan state over the past two months, Sudan’s Doctors Network said Saturday, as the war-torn region faces worsening hunger and medical shortages. The network said its teams “monitored 46 deaths in South Kordofan due to malnutrition during July and August, most of them women and children.”It added: “More than 19,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are in urgent need of supplementary nutrition.”The group condemned the use of starvation as a weapon of war, calling it “a crime against humanity and a war crime under international law,” while highlighting the dire humanitarian situation in the cities of Kadugli and Dalanj. It accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of maintaining a siege on civilians, denouncing “the continued siege and starvation of civilians” and urging “the immediate lifting of the blockade and the opening of safe humanitarian corridors to allow unrestricted delivery of food and medicine.”The network appealed to “local, regional, and international authorities, the World Health Organisation, and all relevant humanitarian agencies to intervene immediately to save the lives of pregnant and breastfeeding women and children before it is too late.”Clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF have intensified across Sudan’s three Kordofan states in recent months. The war, which erupted in April 2023, has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced over 14 million, according to the UN and local authorities. Independent research from U.S. universities, however, estimates the death toll could be as high as 130,000.

Abbas decries move as 'contradiction to international law'US says it will ban PA’s Abbas, 80 other officials from attending UN General Assembly-Rubio says PA and PLO officials to be barred from visiting UN Headquarters in NYC next month over ‘efforts to secure unilateral recognition’ and failure to repudiate extremism-By Jacob Magid 29 August 2025, 7:53 pm

The United States said on Friday it will not allow Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to travel to New York next month for a United Nations gathering of world leaders, where several US allies are set to recognize Palestine as a state.A State Department official told The Times of Israel that a US visa ban on Palestinian officials planning to attend the United Nations General Assembly, announced earlier in the day, would cover Abbas along with 80 other PA officials. The unprecedented step came a month after the State Department first announced that it would pursue the policy, which it now appeared to be implementing.Abbas had been planning to travel to New York for the annual high-level UN General Assembly at UN headquarters in Manhattan. He was also set to attend a summit there — hosted by France and Saudi Arabia — where Britain, France, Australia and Canada are planning to formally recognize a Palestinian state.Abbas’s office said it was astonished by the visa decision and argued that it violated the UN “headquarters agreement.”Under a 1947 UN “headquarters agreement,” the US is generally required to allow access for foreign diplomats to the UN in New York. Washington, however, has said it can deny visas for security, extremism and foreign policy reasons.Explaining the move, the State Department announcement said, “It is in our national security interests to hold the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority accountable for not complying with their commitments, and for undermining the prospects for peace.”The State Department said that the Palestinian Authority’s mission to the UN, comprising officials who are permanently based there, would not be included in the restrictions.Abbas’s office expressed its “deep regret and astonishment” at the US decision, which it said “stands in clear contradiction to international law and the UN Headquarters Agreement, particularly since the State of Palestine is an observer member of the United Nations.”His office urged the US to reconsider and reverse the move, “reaffirming Palestine’s full commitment to international law, UN resolutions and obligations toward peace, as conveyed in President Mahmoud Abbas’s letters to world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.”UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the UN would discuss the visa issue with the State Department, “in line with UN Headquarters agreement between the UN and the US.”Under the agreement with the UN, the US is required to allow representatives of member states, officials working on behalf of the United Nations and those who received invitations to visit UN headquarters in New York City without hindrance.America has generally upheld this commitment over the years, even when administrations found certain world leaders objectionable, as in the case of former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who visited on several occasions in the early 2000s.The State Department said it was in compliance with the requirements as it would still allow Palestinian diplomats already based in New York to attend the event by granting them visa waivers. While the UN General Assembly recognizes a state of Palestine, it is designated as a non-member observer like the Vatican. The US previously restricted the movement of foreign officials from adversarial countries such as Russia, Iran and North Korea but didn’t ban them completely. In 1988, the US denied a visa to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat, but this was before Israel recognized the PLO during the 1993 Oslo Accords. As a result of the 1988 ban, the UN moved a planned General Assembly session from New York to Geneva so Arafat could speak.“Before the PLO and PA can be considered partners for peace, they must consistently repudiate terrorism — including the October 7 massacre — and end incitement to terrorism in education, as required by US law and as promised by the PLO,” the US statement said.Abbas did condemn the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack for the first time in June, after facing intensive Israeli criticism for refusing to do so.Unlike the July 31 State Department announcement previewing the move, Friday’s statement did not mention the PA’s controversial welfare program that included payments to the families of security prisoners based on the length of their prison sentence. No explanation was given for the removal. Abbas had signed a decree in February ending the policy and replacing it with a new one, which the PA has begun implementing and invited the US to certify is now in place, though the Trump administration has yet to send a delegation to Ramallah. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the change.“The PA must also end its attempts to bypass negotiations through international lawfare campaigns, including appeals to the International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice, and efforts to secure the unilateral recognition of a conjectural Palestinian state,” the State Department statement continued.“Both steps materially contributed to Hamas’s refusal to release its hostages, and to the breakdown of the Gaza ceasefire talks,” the statement claimed.Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said France’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state led Hamas to raise its demands in hostage negotiations, which collapsed the talks on July 24. But an Arab diplomat and a second source involved in the negotiations told The Times of Israel that Hamas’s new demands were submitted several hours prior to French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that Paris would recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September.Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon told The Times of Israel in an interview this week that France was the party leading the latest drive for countries to recognize a Palestinian state, not the PA.The State Department statement ended by saying that the “US remains open to reengagement that is consistent with our laws, should the PA/PLO meet their obligations and demonstrably take concrete steps to return to a constructive path of compromise and peaceful coexistence with the State of Israel.”The US decision was hailed by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who thanked Rubio for holding the PA and PLO “accountable for rewarding terrorism, incitement and efforts to use legal warfare against Israel. The foreign minister, who met with Rubio in Washington this week, said the Trump administration was “standing by Israel once again” with the “bold step.”Axios reported that Sa’ar had encouraged Rubio to take the step during their meeting in Washington earlier this week.“We’ve been very clear when it comes to our visa system that we are going to take all necessary steps to prevent our visa system from being used by individuals who may support or espouse terrorism or terrorist activity,” White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller told reporters later Friday. The announcement appeared to be the first relatively punitive step that Washington has taken in response to France, the UK and Canada advancing Palestine recognition plans — a move encouraged by Ramallah. The Trump administration, for now, appears to prefer punishing Ramallah directly, as going after more powerful Western governments may be more difficult. However, Trump did float blowing up trade talks with Canada over its decision. The denial of visas also appeared to be the most limited of four steps that the Trump administration had at its disposal if the PA was found in violation of 2002 legislation that requires the president to assess whether Palestinian entities are fulfilling their commitments to combat terrorism and support peace with Israel. The more forceful option that the US could have taken was to designate the PA as a foreign terrorist organization, which would have exposed Ramallah to crippling sanctions.Pressed on whether the US would also take steps against Israel, given that it is widely seen to be in violation of its commitments under the Oslo Accords due to its rampant settlement expansion, failure to withdraw from the West Bank and withholding of over $2 billion in Palestinian tax revenues, the State Department declined to comment on the matter last month. Unlike with the PA and PLO, there is no US law that provides the president with the tools to sanction Israel over such violations. The PLO is the internationally recognized representative of the Palestinian people and oversees the Western-backed PA, to which Israel granted limited autonomy in less than half of the West Bank. Abbas has led both entities for two decades after being democratically elected in 2005, but has refused to hold elections since. He pledged earlier this year to hold elections in 2026.The PA has been under pressure from Arab and Western states to undergo significant reform as they push for the body to replace Hamas as Gaza’s governing authority. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out a future role for the PA in governing Gaza, but has failed to advance any alternative amid pressure from his far-right partners who want to establish settlements in the Strip.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

'The fire helped us a lot in understanding the site'Ruins revealed by wildfire boost Galilean site’s claim as New Testament’s Bethsaida-3-day blaze clears vegetation concealing parts of el-Araj on northern shore of Sea of Galilee, adding kindling to theory that location was hometown of St. Peter visited by Jesus-By Rossella Tercatin-Today, 9:16 am-AUG 30,25

On a sweltering Thursday afternoon last month, Prof. Mordechai Aviam of Kinneret College drove to el-Araj, an archaeological site on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, hauling buckets, tarps and digging tools to prepare for his team’s 2025 excavation season.By Friday, those plans had gone up in flames, literally, as a wildfire swept through the area. It was still burning on Sunday, the day he had hoped to kick off the dig. When the archaeologists were finally allowed back, they found devastation — and unexpected opportunities. The flames destroyed the team’s equipment, but in the process, they also cleared out the dense vegetation that had long concealed parts of the site. What emerged was evidence that could bolster the archaeologists’ long-held argument that el-Araj is in fact the ancient village of Bethsaida, celebrated in the New Testament as the hometown of St. Peter and a place where Jesus walked and performed miracles.“The fire helped us a lot in understanding the site,” Aviam told The Times of Israel over the phone. The archaeologist explained that for at least the past century, and likely longer, the area had been either densely cultivated or overgrown with thick vegetation, and often flooded by the nearby lake, making it impossible to determine the village’s boundaries.“After the fire, we carried out a ground survey and saw that the site was much larger than we realized,” he said. “We identified remains of private houses as well as architectural elements typical of public buildings, including pillar drums, two Corinthian capitals, two Doric capitals, and several cornices.”Aviam said the remains can be dated to the Roman period, based on both nearby buildings that his team has already excavated and the style of the architectural elements uncovered. The site’s considerable size supports its identification as Bethsaida, he added, because it aligns with the way the village is described in “Antiquities of the Jews” by first-century CE Jewish-Roman historian Josephus.“Philip [son of Herod the Great] advanced the village Bethsaida, situated at the lake of Gennesareth, unto the dignity of a city, both by the number of inhabitants it contained, and its other grandeur, and called it by the name of Julias, the same name with Caesar’s daughter,” reads a passage from the work.“In light of what Josephus says, Bethsaida could not have been a small village,” Aviam noted.El-Araj is not the only candidate for the site of the elusive Galilean town where, according to the Gospels, the apostles Peter, Andrew, and Philip were born.About two kilometers (1.2 miles) away, the site of e-Tell has been claimed to be Bethsaida since 1987, when Rami Arav launched the “Bethsaida Excavations Project,” which has been active ever since.Arguments for a third possibility, al-Mesydiah, located roughly two kilometers from the mouth of the Jordan River, have lost ground in recent years in favor of the other two sites.Aviam, who serves as archaeological director of the excavation at el-Araj, has been digging at the site since 2016, together with his co-director Prof. Steven Notley, a historical geographer who teaches at Pillar College in New Jersey.“He was the one who initiated the excavation, suggesting that el-Araj could be Bethsaida,” Aviam said.Soon after digging began in 2016, the team uncovered the remains of a Roman bathhouse, showing that the settlement was already active in the Roman period. In later seasons, they unearthed a fifth-century church with colorful mosaic floors, further strengthening their case.According to Aviam, the most decisive evidence came with the discovery of a Greek inscription dedicating the church to the “Head and Leader of the Heavenly Messengers” and “Keeper of the Keys,” titles traditionally associated with St. Peter. The scholars argue that Byzantine Christians built the church on that spot because they believed it marked the house of Peter described in the New Testament, much like what happened at another key Galilean site, Capernaum. The researchers dedicated the 2025 summer excavation season to exploring several areas of el-Araj — including underneath the church’s floor — to shed more light on life there during the Roman period.Aviam said the team immediately uncovered the remains of Roman buildings. The walls, still visible beneath the fifth-century church, made it clear that the church’s builders had recognized the older structure.“We don’t have proof that this was Peter’s house,” Aviam said, “but the builders may have believed it was the home of Peter and Andrew. It’s exactly like Capernaum, where the church was constructed directly over what they called Peter’s house. Peter was born in Bethsaida, but he moved to Capernaum because his wife was from there.”Aviam said that el-Araj shows evidence of occupation from the Hellenistic and Hasmonean period (second century BCE) through the end of the Roman period (third century CE).“Between the third and fourth centuries, the Jewish village was abandoned, possibly because rising lake levels caused flooding,” he noted. “Later [in the fifth century], the first Christians who came to the site identified it [as Bethsaida] and began building the church.”Consistent with the New Testament description of Bethsaida, the scholars identified the settlement as Jewish based on three types of evidence: Hasmonean coins, stone vessels — which Jews used because they did not become ritually impure — and a very small number of pig bones. While the fire has been useful for Aviam’s research, he said the team will likely not excavate structures revealed by the blaze.“Archaeology is a science of destruction, because when you expose something, it starts to deteriorate,” he said. “So if we already have the answers we need, we are already certain that the structures are from the Roman period, between the first century BCE and the first century CE, we do not need [to excavate] more houses to prove it,” he said. The team plans to return to el-Araj for the second part of the excavation season in October.“We will excavate deeper in the area where we believe the bathhouse was located, as well as in other parts of the site, with the goal of learning more about life here during the Roman period,” Aviam said.

Troops raze 1-km-long tunnel, kill 'terror squad' in Zeitoun-‘Dangerous combat zone’: IDF nixes daily humanitarian pauses in Gaza City, as takeover looms-Military says it will continue supporting aid efforts in rest of Gaza apart from northern city, where about half the population of the Strip is currently gathered-By Stav Levaton-and ToI Staff 29 August 2025, 2:40 pm

The Israel Defense Forces announced Friday that the localized tactical pauses of military activity that have been taking place daily in several locations throughout the Gaza Strip to facilitate the distribution of humanitarian aid would no longer apply to Gaza City, ahead of a major offensive there. The military described the area as a “dangerous combat zone” in a statement announcing the change. In late July, amid surging food prices in Gaza and international outcry over widening starvation, Israel announced a series of measures to increase the supply of humanitarian aid available to civilians in the enclave. Among the moves was the institution of ten-hour daily pauses in fighting in swathes of the Strip, as well as the creation of new aid corridors and airdrop operations. The IDF said Friday that it would continue supporting aid distribution efforts across the enclave — with the exception of Gaza City — while simultaneously carrying out “offensive operations against terror groups in Gaza to protect Israeli civilians.”The military is gearing up for an offensive which aims to capture Gaza City, where an estimated one million Palestinians — or roughly half of the enclave’s population — are currently centered. The IDF has urged civilians to evacuate the city and move south.Jerusalem is moving forward with the plan, despite broad international opposition — with the exception of the US — as well as anger at home among many citizens who feel the move poses unjustified risk to the remaining hostages, as well as to soldiers, and favor a comprehensive deal with the Hamas terror group to return the captives in exchange for an end to the war.On Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met United Nations World Food Programme executive director Cindy McCain in Jerusalem, and said in a joint statement that they had agreed to “redouble efforts to expedite and sustain the entry of humanitarian goods into Gaza given the dire needs on the ground.” The meeting came days after the global hunger monitor Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared for the first time that famine had struck the densely populated northern Gaza Strip, a finding rejected by Israel. IDF: Terror squad killed in Zeitoun, observation post struck-Also Friday, the IDF said in a statement that troops operating in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City had “identified a squad of terrorists who were hiding in a military structure about 100 meters (yards) from them.”The Israeli troops “directed an Air Force aircraft to attack the structure and eliminated the terrorists,” the statement said, attaching video of the incident.Additionally, an observation post aimed at IDF forces was struck, the military said, publishing footage of that attack as well. On Thursday night, the military said IDF troops operating in Zeitoun had discovered and destroyed a roughly one-kilometer-long (0.6 miles) Hamas tunnel equipped with living quarters and weapons.Soldiers from the 7th Brigade, under the 99th Division, located the underground tunnel during operations on the outskirts of Gaza City. According to the IDF, the tunnel was used by Hamas operatives for military purposes. In addition, the brigade, working alongside the Israeli Air Force, dismantled other terrorist infrastructure, seized additional weapons and neutralized several terror operatives who posed a threat to troops in the area, the IDF said. The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists invaded Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, of whom 48 are still held, 20-22 of whom are believed to be alive. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 62,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed over 22,000 combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel during and immediately following the October 7 onslaught.Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools and mosques.Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip stands at 460. The toll includes two police officers and three Defense Ministry civilian contractors.

Southern Lebanon strike kills senior member of Hezbollah’s Radwan force — IDF-Army accuses Ahmad Naeem Maatouk of violating arrangements between Israel and Lebanon; also says troops operated in Syria overnight, doesn’t comment on reported Damascus raid-By Stav Levaton,Lazar Berman-and ToI Staff 29 August 2025, 11:05 pm

The Israel Defense Forces said Friday that it killed a senior Hezbollah operative in a strike on southern Lebanon, and that troops carried out a series of overnight operations in southern Syria.Ahmad Naeem Maatouk, a member of the Iran-backed terror group’s elite Radwan Force, was targeted in an attack on the municipality of Sir El Gharbiyeh, just north of the Litani River, the IDF said. English-language news outlet L’Orient Today published what it said was footage from the scene showing a group of people inspecting a bombed-out car.According to the IDF, Maatouk served as operations officer in a Radwan battalion and advanced multiple terror plots against Israel during the 14-month Israel-Hezbollah war that ended with a November 27 ceasefire agreement. The IDF said Maatouk’s actions violated arrangements between Israel and Lebanon.Under a November ceasefire deal, Lebanon’s army has been deploying in the country’s south and dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure there with the support of UN observers. The Lebanese government is expected on Sunday to come up with a plan to convince Hezbollah to disarm, US envoy Tom Barrack said Tuesday.Speaking in Tel Aviv after visiting Lebanon, US Senator Lindsey Graham said Thursday that if Hezbollah does not agree to disarm, it should face military action.“If we cannot reach a peaceful disarmament solution for Hezbollah, then we need to look at plan B,” the South Carolina Republican said at a press conference. “Plan B is disarming Hezbollah by military force.”The US should support the Lebanese Armed Forces in that effort, said Graham, who is considered a close ally of US President Donald Trump.“If we have to use military force to disarm Hezbollah, I think it’s in America’s interest to make sure the Lebanese army is successful,” he said.Hezbollah began launching near-daily attacks on Israel border towns on October 8, 2023 — a day after fellow Iran-backed terror group Hamas invaded southern Israel, sparking the war in Gaza.Hezbollah’s rocket attacks displaced some 60,000 residents of northern Israel. In a bid to ensure their return home, Israel in September stepped up operations in Lebanon, leading to two months of open warfare that ended with the November truce.IDF touts Syria op but doesn’t address reported Damascus raidThe IDF said Friday that its forces carried out a series of overnight operations in southern Syria, uncovering weapons and detaining several suspects accused of advancing terror activity against Israeli troops in the area. The statement did not address reports by Syrian state media on Thursday that Israeli commandos raided a Syrian military installation near Damascus following two days of airstrikes. The IDF has yet to comment on those reports.According to the IDF, the raids overnight Thursday-Friday were conducted by the 226th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade under the 210th Bashan Regional Division with assistance from field investigators in Military Intelligence’s Unit 504.The IDF said troops remain on the Syrian side of the Israeli-Syrian buffer zone.Citing concern that the buffer zone would fall into the wrong hands, Israel seized the area in December following the ouster of Syria’s Iran-backed president Bashar al-Assad at the end of a 14-year civil war.A bipartisan trio of US lawmakers who visited Damascus criticized on Thursday what they said were Israel’s “destabilizing” strikes on Syria.“The Syrians are prepared to move forward with Israel to advance peace,” they said in a statement. “It is unclear how long the door to this opportunity will remain open.”

IDF says strike killed highest-ranking ISIS official in Gaza-Hamas says 5 more people die of starvation, 48 killed over 24 hours; Netanyahu’s office criticizes WFP chief, claims her statements on hunger contradicted what she said at meeting By Stav Levaton and ToI Staff Today, 3:34 am-AUG 30,25

The Israeli military said Friday evening it had eliminated the highest-ranking ISIS official in the Gaza Strip, Muhammad Abd al-Aziz Abu Zubaida, in a strike carried out in the past week in the Al-Bureij area of central Gaza.According to the Israel Defense Forces, the strike was carried out using aerial assets under the direction of Southern Command and under guidance from the Military Intelligence Directorate.Abu Zubaida served as the head of ISIS’s Palestine District and was responsible for policy, planning and implementation of the group’s operations in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula. The military said the organization has actively engaged in combat against IDF forces and facilitated the transfer of weapons and terror funding from the West Bank into Gaza. Also on Friday, the IDF said alerts were activated in open areas of the Gaza border region due to a false identification of a rocket launch. According to the military, an interceptor missile was launched and alerts were sounded according to standard policy.Earlier in the day the military said it had stepped up armed operations around Gaza City, ending temporary pauses there that had allowed for aid deliveries as it pushed ahead with a plan to take full control of Gaza City.“The local tactical pause in military activity will not apply to the area of Gaza City, which constitutes a dangerous combat zone,” the military said. The assault on Gaza City has gradually intensified over the past week as Israel has urged civilians to leave for the south of the Palestinian enclave. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said Friday that five people, including two children, had died from malnutrition and starvation over the previous 24 hours, bringing the total alleged number of deaths from such cases to 322 since the start of the war. Israeli fire across the besieged Palestinian enclave killed 48 people on Friday, local health authorities said.Last week a global hunger monitor that works with the United Nations and major aid agencies said it had determined there was famine in Gaza. Israel has rejected the report as “fabricated” and based on manipulated data. Two days after meeting UN World Food Programme executive director Cindy McCain in Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office criticized her Friday for what it claimed were statements that contradicted what she said in their sit-down.“Ms. McCain agreed that the aid looted by Hamas does not reach its intended humanitarian destination and that Hamas seizes the aid and sells it at exorbitant prices,” the PMO said.“McCain said that during her recent visit to Gaza, she observed a dramatic improvement: food was available, prices had dropped and markets had sufficient goods at reasonable prices,” Netanyahu’s office continued. “It is unfortunate that since the meeting, Ms. McCain has issued statements that contradict what she said in Jerusalem during that meeting.”The PMO did not specify which allegedly contradictory statements of McCain’s it was referring to. McCain did speak multiple times publicly about starvation in Gaza, but did not appear to directly point the finger at Israel.US Senator Lindsey Graham was at the meeting, and said that it went very well.“I met starving children receiving treatment for severe malnutrition – and I saw photos of when they were healthy. Today they are unrecognizable,” McCain said, according to the WFP.“What we need is a ceasefire. My heart goes out to the mothers in Gaza, as well as to the mothers of the Israeli hostages, whose children are currently starving. Enough is enough,” McCain said during a visit to Ramallah. “We can quickly scale up humanitarian aid to reach the most vulnerable inside Gaza, support the return of all hostages, and lay the foundation for peace and stability.”Netanyahu and McCain had released a joint statement after their meeting, calling it “constructive” and noting the recent increase in aid going into Gaza. The World Health Organization said Friday it had run out of critical medical supplies in Gaza that it needs to treat a surge in cases of a rare paralysis-causing syndrome in the Palestinian enclave. There have been 94 documented cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome in Gaza since June, resulting in 10 deaths, although GBS had rarely been seen in the enclave before the Israel-Hamas war began nearly two years ago, it said.GBS is a rare condition that involves a person’s immune system attacking the peripheral nerves. Severe cases can result in near-total paralysis and breathing problems, the WHO said. The fatalities include four children under 15 and six older patients with an average age of 25, the WHO said. Two of the victims had received no treatment, reflecting critical shortages in essential treatment supplies, it added. The surge in GBS has primarily been driven by gastrointestinal and respiratory infections, closely linked to deteriorating water, sanitation and hygiene conditions, it said.

Gaza-bound flotilla set to sail from Spain on Sunday, with Greta Thunberg again in tow-Organizer of what is expected to be largest flotilla yet urges governments to pressure Israel to let activists break naval blockade of the Strip-By Reuters and ToI Staff 29 August 2025, 11:32 pm

Activists set to sail from Spain for Gaza on Sunday have called on governments to pressure Israel to let their flotilla through the naval blockade on the enclave. The Global Sumud Flotilla, the largest to date, is expected to include dozens of boats carrying aid and hundreds of people from 44 countries. Sumud means “perseverance” in Arabic.Among the activists set to take part in the flotilla are Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was detained and then deported by Israel after the IDF intercepted a separate Gaza-bound boat she joined in June. Also set to participate in the flotilla is left-wing Portuguese lawmaker Mariana Mortagua.Israel has scuppered numerous attempts by international activists to penetrate the nearly 20-year-long blockade, including in 2010, when nine Turkish citizens were killed in a clash with IDF naval commandos who intercepted the Mavi Marmara flotilla. The new flotilla comes after a UN hunger monitor said last week that parts of Gaza were suffering from famine. Israel, which stopped the flow of aid into Gaza for nearly three months until mid-May, has rejected the report as a “modern blood libel” and accused Hamas of looting aid deliveries.Saif Abukeshek, one of the organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla, said the ball was in the politicians’ court to put pressure on Israel to let the activists through this time.“They need to act to defend human rights and to guarantee a safe passage for this flotilla,” said Abukeshek, who is a Palestinian resident of Spain, in an interview with Reuters in Barcelona on Thursday.Israel has dismissed previous activist flotillas, including the British-flagged yacht carrying Thunberg in June, as a propaganda stunt in support of Hamas.Israel imposed the naval blockade on Gaza in 2007, when Hamas took control of the Strip two years after Israel withdrew from it. According to Israel, the blockade was necessary to prevent Hamas from smuggling arms by sea.The blockade has remained in place through conflicts, including the current war, which began when Hamas-led terrorists stormed southern Israel on October 7, 2023, to kill some 1,200 people and take 251 hostages.Israel’s retaliatory offensive has since killed almost 63,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry. The toll, which cannot be independently verified, does not distinguish between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed over 22,000 combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 onslaught.

Hamas calls to 'escalate punitive measures' against Israel-Israeli airlines say they’re still traversing Turkish airspace despite declared closure-Diplomat clarifies only overflights of planes ferrying Israeli officials or weapons to Israel are blocked from Turkey’s skies, after its FM claimed airspace closed and trade ‘totally cut’By Lazar Berman-and Agencies 29 August 2025, 7:59 pmUpdated at 10:04 pm

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Friday said Ankara has “totally cut” trade with Israel and closed Turkey’s airspace to Israeli planes, though Israeli airlines said they received no new instructions.A Turkish diplomatic source later clarified that Fidan only meant Israeli government flights and flights carrying weapons to Israel would be barred from Turkey’s skies.“The minister’s comments refer to official Israeli flights and flights carrying weapons or ammunition to Israel. This does not apply to transit commercial flights,” the source said. The clarification came after Israeli officials earlier told The Times of Israel that they believed Fisan was simply laying out, with some inaccuracies, actions Turkey already took against Israel over the war against Hamas in Gaza.“We have totally cut our trade with Israel, we have closed off our ports to Israeli ships and we are not allowing Turkish vessels to go to Israel’s ports,” Fidan told an extraordinary parliamentary session on Israel’s attacks on the Strip.“We are not allowing container ships carrying weapons and ammunition to Israel to enter our ports, and airplanes to go into our airspace,” he added, without giving details.Fidan also said Turkey was set to carry out airdrops of aid to Gaza. “Our planes are ready; once Jordan gives its approval, we will be in a position to go,” he told lawmakers. The Israeli government did not immediately comment on Fidan’s remarks, which came a day after Saudi outlet Al-Hadath reported that an Israeli raid in the Damascus area overnight Wednesday-Thursday dismantled Turkish surveillance devices intended to monitor Israel.Responding to Fidan’s statement, Hamas urged “Turkey, as well as Arab and Islamic countries and the free nations of the world, to escalate punitive measures against [Israel]” and “sever all relations with it, and work to isolate it — to compel it to halt the genocide and destruction of Gaza.”Despite Fidan’s statement, Israeli airplanes were still operating in Turkish airspace on Friday and received no instructions to do otherwise, Army Radio reported.“Following reports about Turkey’s decision to close its airspace to Israeli planes, Arkia is in contact with the relevant authorities,” the Israeli airline told The Times of Israel. “At this stage, no operational instructions have been received.”Israir also told The Times of Israel that “the airspace has not been closed.”“Our flights are operating as scheduled with no changes, and we are in regular contact with the Civil Aviation Authority,” said the carrier.Shipping sources already told Reuters last week that Turkish port authorities had started informally requiring shipping agents to provide letters declaring that vessels are not linked to Israel and not carrying military or hazardous cargo bound for the country.A source had also said that Turkish-flagged ships would be prohibited from calling at Israeli ports.Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak, a Turkey expert at Tel Aviv University’s Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, nonetheless considered Fidan’s latest statement to be credible and dramatic.“Turkey is adopting a gradual punishment strategy against Israel,” said Yanarocak. “When Israel declared its intention to launch an invasion of Gaza City, Ankara imposed naval sanctions that barred Israeli ships from visiting Turkish ports. And today, following news that the IDF launched an extraterritorial raid against Syrian army outposts, where Turkey had intelligence devices to track the activities of Israeli troops, Ankara made a new decision and shut down its airspace to Israeli planes.”“This move is certainly unprecedented, and it will not be easy to reverse in the future,” he said.Turkey, a leading supporter of Hamas, has been one of the harshest critics of Israel’s conduct in Gaza.Last year, Turkey said it was stopping all exports and imports to and from Israel, though some are said to have quietly continued. The two countries had a trade volume of $6.8 billion in 2023, and Turkey was Israel’s fifth-largest source of imported goods. Israel and Turkey have free trade agreements from the mid-1990s that are now being abrogated.Istanbul had also long been a popular destination for Israeli tourists, many of whom traveled on Turkish Airlines and used Turkey’s Atatürk Airport as a cheaper option for connecting flights to destinations in Europe and elsewhere. Before the Hamas massacre in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which sparked the war in Gaza, Turkish Airlines was the fourth-largest carrier at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport. In April, Turkish carriers waived their flight slots at the airport.Sharon Wrobel and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
