THE END OF THE WORLD FOLKS ARE SCARING UP A STORM.

HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.(IN 1 HR THE STOCK MARKETS WORLDWIDE WILL CRASH)
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

MARK OF THE BEAST (engraved microchip in your hand or forehead)

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, (SLAVE) to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM

REVELATION 16:1-2
1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

I KNOW THIS MARK WILL BE A MICROCHIP IMPLANT UNDER THE SKIN. LETS LOOK UP WHAT THE WORD MARK SAYS IN REVELATION 13:16-18, 14:9,11, 15:2, 16:2, 19:20, 20:4-ALL THESE VERSES FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION SPEAK OF THIS DICTATORS MARK. NOW LETS SEE WHAT IT MEANS FROM STRONGS EXAUSTIVE CONCORDANCE OF THE BIBLE. UNDER MARK PAGE 684.MARK UNDER MARK. THE OLD TESTAMENT IS UNDER HEBREW AND THE NEW TESTAMENT IS UNDER GREEK. Latinstimulus, etc.; German stechen, English stick, sting, etc.; Curtius, § 226)), a mark pricked in or branded upon the body. According to ancient oriental usage, slaves and soldiers bore the name or stamp of their master or commander branded or pricked (cut) into their bodies to indicate what master or general they belonged to, and there were even some devotees who stamped themselves in this way with the token of their gods (cf. Deyling, Observations, iii., p. 423ff); hence, τά στίγματα τοῦ (κυρίου so Rec.) Ἰησοῦ, the marks of (the Lord) Jesus, which Paul in Galatians 6:17 says he bears branded on his body, are the traces left there by the perils, hardships, imprisonments, scourgings, endured by him for the cause of Christ, and which mark him as Christ's faithful and approved votary, servant, soldier (see Lightfoots Commentary on Galatians, the passage cited). LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

DEUTORONOMY 28:24
24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

LOCUSTS (DEMONIC) TORTURES SINNERS 5 MONTHS
REVELATION 9:1-6
1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
3 And there came out of the smoke (DEMONIC) locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

IKE Tech, Privately roll out biometric age assurance to curb underage vaping-Nov 25, 2024, 3:22 pm EST    | Abigail Opiah

Lawmakers are under increasing pressure to implement biometric age verification measures to combat the rising issue of underage vaping. Proposals include leveraging AI-powered apps and integrating advanced biometric tools to prevent minors from purchasing vape products, echoing initiatives already underway in countries like Ireland and the United States. As the pressure mounts for lawmakers, it trickles down to the biometric systems providers to have the tools readily available. Retailers across Ireland, the UK and the U.S. have already begun adopting AI age assurance apps, designed to verify the age of customers attempting to purchase vaping products.IKE Tech launches biometric app for vape devices-In the UK, the widespread accessibility of vape products to minors has sparked calls for innovative systems, with age verification at the forefront.IKE Tech has unveiled a technology platform designed to enforce continuous age verification on vaping devices, as the UK government prepares to introduce its Tobacco and Vapes Bill to Parliament. The proposed legislation includes measures to raise the legal age for tobacco sales incrementally, restrict child-friendly vape packaging, and establish a licensing scheme for vape and tobacco products. However, IKE Tech has argued that while these steps may curb underage vaping, they are unlikely to eliminate the problem entirely, CityAM reports. The company’s tool involves embedding a Bluetooth-enabled chip in vaping devices, functioning as a “child lock.” Paired with an app linked to global identity verification platforms that provide authentication with selfie biometrics, the system’s main focus is to prevent vapes from being used unless the user’s age is authenticated.Similar ideas have been gaining traction globally. In the U.S., e-cigarette company Juul proposed integrating age assurance mechanisms directly into vaping devices last year, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the company to stop selling vapes. The tool would require users to connect their vape pens to a smartphone app that verifies their identity and age through biometrics. Juul uses Jumio‘s NetVerify for identity and age verification online. This strategy aligns with the push for stricter regulations outlined by the FDA. Ispire Technology Inc. and its joint venture partner IKE Tech LLC have successfully completed a pre-market submission meeting with the FDA for their age verification technology, which aims to prevent underage access to electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) while allowing adult users to continue using flavored vaping products.By using blockchain technology and collaborating with identity verification providers, the IKE Tech platform aims to provide a tool for vaping products, particularly those that are flavored and already approved under the FDA’s Pre-Market Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) process. The technology is seen as a potential tool for expanding adult access to flavored vapor products, while helping to reduce underage vaping by introducing robust age-gating measures at the point of use.Age assurance app and store rollouts in Ireland-In Ireland, an AI-powered app for automating age estimation by Johnston Retail Services and Privately has been deployed across retail outlets. The AgeAI app scans users’ biometric data, such as facial features, to infer their age before purchase.“Underage vaping is a problem in Ireland, and there’s a pressing requirement to prevent sales to minors,” says Deepak Tewari, CEO, Privately.“But store owners and managers need help, and our partnership with Johnston Retail Services delivers that, with an automated, accurate and speedy solution that allows staff to avoid the confrontation that comes from requests for ID and turning people away.”AgeAI is already deployed to hundreds of vape stores in the UK through a partnership with Our Vape Advocacy.Research found that four out of five vape users in Northern Ireland have never been asked to verify their age before purchase.

Networked approach to digital ID authorization presents $15.5B market opportunity-Liminal defines new category for ‘IANs’Nov 25, 2024, 12:31 pm EST    | Chris Burt

Digital identity networks that go beyond identity verification to cover enterprise identity and fraud protection needs from end to end represent a major growth opportunity worth up to $15.5 billion by 2028 in the U.S. alone.Liminal calls these networks Identity Authorization Networks (IANs), and says in a new report that they will address a total market opportunity worth $12.1 billion in 2025.IANs are defined as entities providing connection between real-world identities and online interactions, meeting the highest levels of assurance and taking a network approach to shared fraud signals sharing, and thereby extending high assurance to more situations. This means they offer a form of reusable identity, at least in some cases, but also layer in the ingestion and sharing of fraud signals, and network policies to act on them.Liminal provides a breakdown of services from seven companies that it says possess key elements of IANs, including Proof, ID.me, Entrust, Clear, Visa, DocuSign and Google. Jumio and Socure are listed as two more vendors who could consider building an IAN. The first seven are compared on the basis of how many of nine key IAN capabilities they possess.“The Market for Identity Authorization Networks in the United States” starts by enumerating the tremendous fraud losses experienced by American businesses, government and individuals. A relatively modest increase in the number of incidents since 2019 led to a 3.6-times increase in reported dollars lost to $12,5 billion in 2023. Liminal notes that the Federal Trade Commission has said the real number may be as high as $158 billion. The fraud landscape is recognized as full of pitfalls by business and consumers alike, as AI and sophisticated fraud overcome the little resistance offered up by a system based on physical ID cards. The liveness detection and biometrics the market has turned to help, but add friction and are imperfect. Liminal points out that an analysis of 10 top fraud prevention software vendors shows an average success rate in blocking fraud attempts of 46 percent. The vendor with the best result was successful 59 percent of the time.Trinsic CEO Riley Hughes explains the difference between IANs and what his company is doing in terms of the axis they operate on. Trinsic seeks to extend digital ID horizontally, across providers, while IANs support the entire lifecycle of a given vertical. IANs answer questions the market is currently not well-suited to address, like: did the user agree to this transaction? This gap provides an opportunity for private-sector digital IDs to provide utility that government-issued mobile driver’s licenses or other digital IDs do not, Hughes argues.Sections within the report cover the market challenges, reusable identity characteristics, end-market fit and opportunities for IANs.

‘KYC alone is not enough’: Proof, Reality Defender on threat of AI-driven fraud-Nov 22, 2024, 8:29 am EST    | Abigail Opiah

The growing prevalence of generative AI has unlocked positive potential across a range of industries, but it has also amplified challenges, particularly around identity fraud and trust in digital transactions. In a webinar this week, industry leaders from Proof and Reality Defender discussed the shift in how AI-driven fraud is being carried out and the measures necessary to address emerging threats.Kelly Pidhirsky, VP solutions consulting at Proof, highlighted the company’s journey from its roots as Notarize to becoming a platform centered on securing high-value digital interactions.“We started out as the first company to bring legal notarizations online, and since then we’ve really revolutionized the traditional paper-bound processes, and it’s all about setting a new standard for digital interactions,” Pidhirsky says. “Fast forward to today, and it’s so much more than just online notarizations, not that that’s not incredibly important, it’s still the foundation, but we’re all about now becoming this comprehensive, identity-centric platform.”Proof’s identity authorization network cryptographically binds verified real-world identities to digital documents, aiming to reduce fraud and ensure compliance. With a client base spanning over 7,000 organizations, including financial institutions, healthcare providers, and real estate firms, Proof has redefined trust in virtual environments. The general consensus from the panelists is that generative AI has evolved significantly, with real-time video deepfakes emerging as the next frontier. While previous limitations, such as errors in extreme facial angles or actions like touching one’s hair, were evident even six months ago, recent breakthroughs have overcome these barriers. This progress allows fraudsters to convincingly impersonate individuals in real time, a feat that requires sophisticated training and computational resources.“The rise of generative AI exacerbates identity trust issues,” Pidhirsky adds, pointing to the ease with which bad actors can exploit advanced tools to impersonate individuals and undermine KYC (Know Your Customer) protocols. “KYC alone is not enough,” she warns, citing an $81 billion annual loss attributed to identity-related fraud.Battling deepfake threats-Mason Allen, head of sales at Reality Defender addresses the increasing sophistication of deepfake technology, which has evolved from crude digital imitations to hyper-realistic manipulations capable of undermining enterprise and government systems. Reality Defender, a New York-based cybersecurity company, employs multi-model approaches to detect signals of synthetic media in real time, offering defenses against fraudulent activity. Reaching $33 million in an expansion of its series A funding round last month, the company’s AI detection models, trained on extensive datasets, enable real-time identification of deepfake forgeries during critical moments of user verification.“Deepfakes are the next iteration of a cat-and-mouse game akin to antivirus software,” Allen remarks, explaining how Reality Defender continuously adapts to emerging deepfake techniques. He emphasizes the alarming scale of the problem, referencing Deloitte’s projection that generative AI fraud could become a $40 billion annual challenge by 2027.In financial contexts, real-time video calls are often used for KYC processes and high-value transactions. However, fraudsters have begun exploiting these mechanisms. For example, a deepfake scam earlier this year involved impersonating a chief financial officer and two deputies on a live Zoom call, resulting in the theft of $25 million. Such incidents highlight the vulnerabilities of existing identity verification systems. The risks extend beyond financial crimes. Deepfake technology has been used to impersonate CEOs in scams and misinformation campaigns, taking advantage of executives’ publicly available voice and image data. Even high-profile figures, such as U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, have fallen victim to deepfakes, with a recent incident involving a fabricated interaction with a purported Ukrainian official.Generative AI platforms like Runway and ChatGPT have progressed rapidly, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and synthetic media. Allen illustrates this with examples of advancements in video generation technology, noting how deepfakes have evolved to the point of being indistinguishable from authentic content. While these tools enhance creativity and efficiency, they also empower bad actors to scale social engineering attacks and financial fraud with minimal technical expertise.Call to action-The speakers shared a call to action: a reevaluation of digital identity verification systems to address vulnerabilities exposed by generative AI. Pidhirsky emphasizes the importance of verifying the “living, present person” behind documents, while Allen stressed the need for enterprises to adopt proactive measures in identifying and mitigating deepfake risks.“Generative AI isn’t just a future problem, it’s a present reality,” Pidhirsky warns. The webinar advocates for enhanced collaboration between technology providers and stakeholders to secure digital interactions against increasingly sophisticated threats.Proof, Entrust and TransUnion are also introducing tools to address fraud risks. For example, Entrust launched a cloud-based identity verification service that supports biometric checks, while TransUnion focuses on fraud insights derived from behavioral analytics. Additionally, Proof’s Verify deepfake defense aims to reduce the risk of fraudulent activities such as deepfakes by ensuring that users are legitimate.Proof’s Verify platform already serves over 7,000 organizations, including financial institutions, healthcare providers, small businesses, and government agencies. The experts also advocate for continuous monitoring and dynamic risk assessment as key strategies. Technologies that verify identity through video, voice, and behavioral patterns in real time can help thwart attacks while maintaining ease of use for genuine users. As deepfake technology becomes increasingly accessible, the potential for misuse will likely grow.

THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT IN PEOPLE HAS TO START SOMEWHERE. I SAY IMPLANT ALL MIGRANTS TO KEEP TRACK OF THEM.

Privacy International says biometric tracking of migrants in UK ‘intrusive’Nov 22, 2024, 8:07 am EST    | Lu-Hai Liang

Privacy International has found a biometric device used by the United Kingdom’s Home Office to track migrants “intrusive and stigmatizing by design.”In technical research, the privacy advocacy group determined that so-called non-fitted devices (NFDs) used by the British authorities are “inhumane” and cited detrimental impacts to daily life and mental and physical wellbeing. The NFDs used by the UK Home Office are small handheld devices which track and record a person’s GPS location 24/7, and request frequent biometric verification in the form of fingerprint scans. Most recently, migrants are being given Android phones that come equipped with a fingerprint scanner and GPS tracking. The devices alert the individual at random intervals throughout the day, requesting their fingerprint scan, and verifying it against the biometric information stored on the device. In previous research, PI found the NFDs were sending the wearer alerts up to five times per day – but has since discovered that individuals can be sent many more alerts than this in a given day.PI found the high volume of alerts, the erratic nature of the alerts, the unreasonable alert response times, and too-strict matching probabilities (such as unrealistically high percentage matches) contributed to the device’s inhumane and harmful effect.Creating their own version of the app used by the Home Office, Privacy International’s tech researchers demonstrated that NFD technology has the capability of being much less intrusive and erratic, such as by having more structured alert time periods and more limited locational and biometric data collection.Since PI found less intrusion was possible, the organization concluded that the Home Office did not adequately consider the human rights impact of the monitoring. “The human cost of these kinds of migration surveillance programmes are individuals who are made to feel like ‘caged animals,’” the report says, “constantly thinking about when the next alert might go off – when they are on a bus, seeing friends, or trying to sleep.”PI recommended that the Home Office should consider more humane approaches to use of new technologies to ensure migrants do not feel further dehumanized. “They [Home Office] should instead take a deliberate approach to protect and respect their right to live in dignity, free from stigma and arbitrary surveillance as these individuals navigate an increasingly hostile environment,” the report argued.PI stated that it would continue to investigate NFDs and the UK Home Office’s wider electronic monitoring.

South Africa adopts biometrics for social protection, following India’s example-Nov 22, 2024, 8:01 am EST    | Abigail Opiah

As governments worldwide strive to address inequality and build resilient communities, innovative digital tools are emerging as key enablers for social protection initiatives.Such governments, according to the World Economic Forum, have embraced digital public infrastructure and technology to streamline welfare programs, employing management information systems (MIS), social registries, and biometric authentication. MIS digitizes transactions to improve transparency and enforce procedures, while social registries ensure benefits reach pre-identified beneficiaries. Biometric systems aim to reduce leakages in welfare distribution by verifying recipients’ identities.Recent developments across global platforms highlight a shared commitment to leveraging technology for inclusive growth, particularly in addressing socio-economic disparities and enhancing access to essential services.SASSA launches biometric verification-The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has introduced biometric verification for Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applications, in a bid to enhance security and curb fraud. The system, which employs fingerprint and facial recognition technology, will be implemented during both the application and payment processes, ensuring that grants are accessed only by legitimate beneficiaries.“We are continually striving to improve the integrity of our grant system,” says SASSA spokesperson. “Biometric verification will significantly enhance our ability to detect and prevent fraudulent activities, ensuring that resources are allocated to those who truly need them.”Beneficiaries have been urged to ensure their personal information is updated in agency records and to cooperate with the new protocols. SASSA assured that guidance and support for the transition would be available through local offices and official communication channels.India’s bold leap in DPI-India has been a frontrunner in integrating digital tools into public welfare. Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Romer hailed India’s Aadhaar system as one of the world’s most significant technological advancements, citing its transformative impact on governance, welfare delivery, and social inclusion.Speaking at an international forum, Romer praised Aadhaar for laying a strong foundation for government benefit programs and enhancing access to public services for millions of Indians, adding that its success offers valuable lessons for nations seeking to support marginalized populations through technology.Overseen by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the Aadhaar system has grown into the world’s largest digital identity initiative, with over 1.4 billion Aadhaar numbers issued to date.According to government data, Aadhaar has helped eliminate millions of duplicate or fake beneficiaries across welfare schemes, saving billions in public funds.Romer’s endorsement comes as other nations explore Aadhaar-inspired systems to address challenges in welfare delivery and digital identity.Aadhaar integration and e-PoS rollout-The integration of Aadhaar authentication, e-PoS devices, and other digital innovations has streamlined the distribution of food grains to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution has announced that 99.8 percent of the country’s ration cards and 98.7 percent of individual beneficiaries are now Aadhaar-seeded. Approximately 98 percent of food grains are now distributed using Aadhaar authentication, reducing leakages and minimizing pilferage. On the supply side, the government introduced end-to-end digital tools, including the Supply Chain Management System, the Central Food Procurement Portal (CFPP), and the Warehouse Inventory Network and Governing System (WINGS).For distribution, the department has focused on validating beneficiaries through eKYC processes, which cross-verify Aadhaar credentials and ration card details. As of now, 64 percent of beneficiaries have completed eKYC, with the process ongoing at Fair Price Shops across the country.

Hopae building US HQ with $6.5M funding, expanding in Europe-Nov 21, 2024, 9:52 pm EST    | Lu-Hai Liang

A company specializing in decentralized ID – and which positions itself as a pillar of the EU’s digital transformation – has secured $6.5 million in funding as it introduces its technology to the U.S.Hopae made its name building a national vaccination pass (COOV) that was used by 43 million users on a daily basis during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, it’s focused on open-source building blocks for digital wallets, as the EU aims for 80 percent of its citizens to use the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet by 2030.The company helps governments and institutions issue reusable, privacy-preserving and unforgeable digital IDs and credentials. The funding comes as Hopae introduces its proprietary, patented Digital Credential eXpress (DCX) architecture to the U.S. The company is also in the process of establishing its new headquarters in San Francisco.Hopae will be hiring “aggressively” across its Seoul and Paris offices and securing talent for those locations as well as its new headquarters in order to “rapidly scale” as it prepares to provide “an ideal solution” for the EU’s new comprehensive framework for digital identity: eIDAS 2.0.The $6.5 million funding includes $4.3 million in a seed round led by SV Investment with participation from Z Venture Capital and Bon Angels Venture Partners; along with $2.2 million in debt financing from Korea Credit Guarantee Fund (KODIT).The funds will be used to establish the U.S. headquarters, expansion across Europe, and solidifying strategic partnerships for age and identity verification.“DID will soon be used for everything from international travel to healthcare and certifications to online safety for minors,” said Ilyong Choi of SV Investment. “But a trustworthy, high performance solution is absolutely essential to protect businesses, government, and users themselves.”“Hopae has the roots to revolutionize digital identity on a global scale. We are excited to help the company take its next steps forward,” he continued.Co-founder and CEO of Hopae Ace Shim said: “Although eIDAS 2.0 represents a driving force for the adoption of Hopae’s technology, it is clear that this is a necessity for everyone from enterprises that seek to conduct international business to the shops that want to sell goods like alcohol online.”“Hopae is at the forefront of a paradigm shift, and we are excited to bring DCX to the U.S.,” Shim added. The company participated in a pitching competition for biometrics and digital identity startups at Identity Week in September.

WEEK OF DANIEL 9:27 WE KNOW ITS 7 YRS

The King of Jerusalem[1] was the supreme ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Crusader state founded by Christian princes in 1099 when the First Crusade took the city.Godfrey of Bouillon, the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, himself refused the title of king, and instead chose the title "Defender of the Holy Sepulchre". Thus, the title of king was only introduced for his successor, King Baldwin I in 1100. The city of Jerusalem was lost in 1187, but the Kingdom of Jerusalem survived (also known as the "Second Kingdom of Jerusalem"), moving its capital to Acre in 1191. The city of Jerusalem was re-captured in the Sixth Crusade, during 1229–39 and 1241–44. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was finally dissolved with the fall of Acre and the end of the Crusades in the Holy Land in 1291.After the Crusader States ceased to exist, the title of King of Jerusalem was claimed by a number of European noble houses descended from the kings of Cyprus or the kings of Naples. The (purely ceremonial) title of King of Jerusalem is currently used by Felipe VI of Spain. It was claimed by Otto von Habsburg as Habsburg pretender, and by the kings of Italy until 1946.

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

DR SAMUEL DOCTORIANS VISION - SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come." The angel said, "The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The angel said: "This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those countries."The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

Lebanon: 'No serious obstacles' left to deal taking effect-Israel set to okay 60-day Lebanon truce Tuesday, but pledges to act against Hezbollah-Threat of US action at UN played into Jerusalem’s decision-making, says official, asserting that, even if reluctantly, ministers will get in line behind cessation of hostilities-By Lazar Berman-Today, 9:28 pm-NOV 25,24

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will convene the high-level security cabinet in Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening to approve a 60-day ceasefire with the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon after more than a year of war, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel on Monday. At the same time, the official stressed that Israel was accepting a cessation of hostilities, not an end to the war on Hezbollah.“We don’t know how long it will last,” the official said of the ceasefire. “It could be a month, it could be a year.”Since October 8, 2023, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. Some 60,000 residents were evacuated from northern towns on the Lebanon border shortly after Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, in light of fears that Hezbollah would carry out a similar attack, and due to increasing rocket fire by the terror group. Israel has been trying to enable the residents’ return, including through an ongoing ground operation.Israel’s freedom to act in Lebanon after the ceasefire is guaranteed by a letter between it and the US, said the official. The Israel Defense Forces will be able to operate not only against those trying to attack Israel, but also against Hezbollah’s attempts to build up its military power.“We will act,” the official promised.Israel decided it had no choice but to accept a ceasefire, out of a fear that US President Joe Biden’s administration could punish Israel with a United Nations Security Council resolution in its final weeks, explained the official.Israel is also missing capabilities it needs from the US, including 134 D9 bulldozers, said the official.Meanwhile, a Lebanese official said that Beirut had been told by Washington that an accord could be announced “within hours.”Israeli officials said earlier that a deal to end the war was getting closer, though some issues remained, while two senior Lebanese officials voiced guarded optimism, even as Israeli strikes pounded Lebanon.According to Channel 12 news, “something drastic” would have to happen for the ceasefire to fall apart before Tuesday’s meeting.Netanyahu will hold a smaller meeting of close aides on Tuesday morning, including Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Defense Minister Israel Katz, the outlet reported.Lebanon’s deputy speaker of parliament Elias Bou Saab said on Monday that there are “no serious obstacles” left to beginning the implementation of the US-proposed truce. He said one sticking point on who will monitor the ceasefire was resolved in the last 24 hours by agreeing to set up a five-country committee, including France, and chaired by the United States.Israel has been insisting that France not be part of the agreement or be a member of the international committee that will monitor a deal’s implementation, due to its perceived hostility toward Israel in recent months, under President Emanuel Macron. Macron recently repeatedly called for an arms embargo on Israel, characterizing it as the path toward ending the war, sparking a diplomatic crisis.Once France indicated on Friday that it would not be committing to the arrest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in the wake of arrest warrants issued against him by the International Criminal Court — only that it “takes note” of the decision — Israel was willing to accept French involvement.Despite the moves toward a halt to the fighting, both Israel and Hezbollah continued mutual exchanges of fire on Monday. The IDF Home Front Command issued new restrictions in several areas of northern Israel on Monday evening, given fears that Hezbollah would ramp up rocket attacks before the ceasefire comes into effect. If the efforts to achieve a ceasefire collapse, said Channel 12, the IDF has plans for an expansion of its operation in Lebanon.Earlier Monday, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir told Netanyahu to reject the proposal for a ceasefire, calling it “a grave mistake,” though, unlike in the past, he did not threaten to bring down the government if it were approved. In a post on X, the ultranationalist Otzma Yehudit party leader warned that accepting the ceasefire deal would mean missing out on a “historic” opportunity to destroy the Iran-backed terror group. He urged Netanyahu to “listen to the commanders fighting in the field… precisely now, when Hezbollah is beaten and longs for a ceasefire, it is forbidden to stop.”Ben Gvir has been categorically opposed to any deal that would see a cessation of hostilities, even temporarily, in both Gaza and Lebanon, and has threatened more than once to pull his party from the coalition in the event that Israel signs a truce agreement. The ceasefire would ultimately be approved, said the Israeli official speaking to The Times of Israel: “There are ministers who speak to their base, and we take it into consideration. But Ben Gvir understands the importance. It’s in Israel’s interest.”The official also argued that a ceasefire would help reach a successful end to the war in Gaza against Hamas.“What Hamas wanted was support from Hezbollah and others. Once you cut the connection, you have the ability to reach a deal. It’s a strategic achievement,” said the official. “Hamas is alone.”Some 1,200 people were killed and 251 were seized as hostages on October 7 last year, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists poured through the Gaza border into Israel and rampaged through dozens of southern communities.Israel’s subsequent ongoing military campaign is formally aimed at destroying Hamas’s governance and military capabilities in Gaza, returning the hostages, and safely returning the tens of thousands of displaced Israelis to their homes in the north and near the Gaza border.Israel stepped up its offensive on Hezbollah in Lebanon in late September, launching extensive strikes and operations that took out most of the group’s leadership, including its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah.Israel then launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon with the aim of clearing Hezbollah strongholds in the area and making it safe for evacuated residents of northern Israel to return to their homes.

Far right warns against emerging Lebanon ceasefire as Hezbollah barrages continue--Man lightly injured by rocket in Nahariya; IDF strikes across Lebanon hit 25 sites belonging to Hezbollah’s executive council-By Emanuel Fabian,ToI Staff and Agencies Today, 4:26 pm-NOV 25,24

Far-right lawmakers, led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, on Monday cautioned against an emerging ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, saying that security would only be restored to the north of Israel through continued fighting against the Lebanon-based terror group until it is destroyed. The remarks came as a top US adviser met with Defense Minister Israel Katz to discuss a US-mediated deal that reportedly would see both Israel and Hezbollah pull out of southern Lebanon, with some combination of the Lebanese army and international forces taking over security for the strategic region. While Katz convened with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Policy Dan Shapiro, the top Pentagon official responsible for the region, Hezbollah continued to fire drones and rockets at northern Israel, injuring one person. At the same time, Israel hit the terror group’s infrastructure with airstrikes, including areas of Beirut, the Lebanese capital. The ceasefire talks were one of the issues the two discussed, Katz’s office told The Times of Israel.Ben Gvir urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reject the US-backed proposal for a ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon. In a post on X, the ultranationalist Otzma Yehudit party leader warned that accepting the ceasefire deal would mean missing out on a “historic” opportunity to destroy the Iran-backed Hezbollah.Calling it a “grave mistake,” he urged Netanyahu to “listen to the commanders fighting in the field… precisely now, when Hezbollah is beaten and longs for a ceasefire, we must not stop.”“It’s not too late to stop this agreement,” he said. “We must continue until we reach total victory!”Ben Gvir has been categorically opposed to any deal that would see a cessation of hostilities, even temporarily, in both Gaza and Lebanon, and has threatened more than once to pull his party from the coalition in the event that Israel signs a truce agreement. But he did not issue a new ultimatum on Monday. The leader of the extreme-right Noam party, Deputy Minister Avi Maoz, also spoke out against the reported agreement, warning that any deal that does not include Israeli security control of Lebanese territory up to the Litani River, a natural boundary about 20 kilometers from the border, would be “negligence.”MK Benny Gantz, leader of the opposition National Unity party, tweeted on Monday afternoon that Israel should start “acting powerfully” against assets of the Lebanese state, since the national government “gives a free hand to Hezbollah.”Earlier in the day, Gantz said that Israel must only agree to a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah if it grants the IDF freedom to act against the terror group should it violate the terms of the agreement. In an address at the annual Ogen Conference, Gantz, a former defense minister who left the government amid disagreements with Netanyahu about the war in Gaza, said that the residents of northern Israel “must be protected only by the IDF. Not [international observers] UNIFIL, not the Lebanese army, and not a European force.”“We must not return to the reality of October 6,” he said, referring to the period before the October 7, 2023, Hamas terror onslaught in southern Israel, which was followed a day later by the start of near-daily skirmishes with Hezbollah on the northern border. At the time, Hezbollah had already for years openly deployed its forces along the border in violation of a UN resolution it agreed to.Gantz said that any ceasefire agreement must build upon UN Security Council Resolution 1559, which urged the Lebanese government to dismantle Hezbollah and establish full control over its territory, and Resolution 1701, which called for Hezbollah forces to retreat away from the Israeli border, north of the Litani River.MK Gilad Kariv of the Labor Party, in contrast, backed the reported deal.“If we can reach an agreement in Lebanon without ‘total victory’ and the complete destruction of Hezbollah we can do that also in Gaza,” Kariv said, using Netanyahu’s slogan for Israeli policy in the Gaza war, triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, onslaught. The attack killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and 251 were taken hostage to Gaza. Of those, 97 remain in captivity. The following day, Hezbollah began its attacks on the north, forcing tens of thousands of residents of northern Israel to abandon their homes for fear the Shiite terror group would launch a similar invasion.Israel stepped up its offensive on Hezbollah in Lebanon in late September, launching extensive strikes and operations that took out most of the group’s leadership, including its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah.Israel then launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon with the aim of clearing Hezbollah strongholds in the area and making it safe for evacuated residents of northern Israel to return to their homes.Criticism of the emerging ceasefire deal also came from Avichai Stern, mayor of the northern border town Kiryat Shmona, which has been devastated by Hezbollah rocket fire since last year.In a statement, Stern labeled the agreement a “surrender.”He called on Israel’s leaders to “stop and think about the children of Kiryat Shmona. Look them right in the eyes and don’t seal their fate to be the next hostages.”The Israeli ambassador to Washington said that a ceasefire deal to end fighting could be reached very soon.Ambassador Mike Herzog told Army Radio that there remained “points to finalize” and that any deal required agreement from the government. But he said “we are close to a deal” and that “it can happen within days.”Among the issues that remain is an Israeli demand to reserve the right to act should Hezbollah violate its obligations under the emerging deal.As talks continued over the ceasefire, there was no letup in Hezbollah attacks and in Israeli airstrikes against the terror group. The Magen David Adom ambulance service said it provided medical treatment to a 60-year-old man in northern Israel who suffered a shrapnel wound to the head following a barrage of some 20 rockets fired from Lebanon at Nahariya.Sirens were activated in Nahariya and surrounding areas after a 12-hour lull, which in turn was preceded by relentless fire as Hezbollah launched some 250 rockets at northern and central Israel the day before.According to the IDF, some of the rockets launched in the barrage were intercepted. The IDF also said that the Israeli Air Force intercepted a drone that crossed into Israel from Lebanon. Sirens were activated in communities close to the Lebanon border due to fear of falling shrapnel as a result of the interception. In the afternoon, a barrage of some 10 rockets was launched from Lebanon at the northern Golan Heights. The IDF said some of the rockets were intercepted and impacts were also identified.Separately, a drone that entered Israeli airspace “from the east,” usually code for attacks originating in Iraq, crashed in an open area in the Golan Heights, the military added. There were no reports of injuries in the two incidents.North of the border, the IDF said it carried out a series of airstrikes across Lebanon on Monday, against command rooms and other sites belonging to Hezbollah’s executive council, which oversees the terror group’s financial and administrative affairs.Within a few hours, Israeli fighter jets struck 25 sites belonging to the Hezbollah executive council, in southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh, the northeastern city of Baalbek, the Beqaa Valley, Beirut’s southern suburbs, and the outskirts of the Lebanese capital, according to the military. The IDF said the sites included command and control centers and intelligence-gathering centers, where members of the executive council were gathered. The command centers were responsible for forming assessments for Hezbollah, for the terror group to “make operational and additional decisions,” according to the military. The strikes “damaged the capabilities of the executive council to direct and assist Hezbollah terrorists in their attempts to carry out terror plots against the Israeli home front and IDF forces, as well as Hezbollah’s command and control, rehabilitation and information gathering capabilities,” the IDF said. The executive council, according to the IDF, is tasked with “the restoration of [Hezbollah’s] military capabilities on the day after the war, and is a central support for the organization’s military activity.”The former head of the executive council, Hashem Safieddine, who was due to replace Hassan Nasrallah as the leader of the terror group after his assassination, was killed in an airstrike last month.Additional strikes were reported across Lebanon, after the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings for four buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a building in the south Lebanon city of Nabatieh, and an entire neighborhood of the coastal city of Tyre. The IDF also called on Lebanese civilians in the southern village of Halta to evacuate north of the Awali River, ahead of pending IDF operations against Hezbollah forces and infrastructure in the area.In an update, the IDF said that troops from the 91st Division found many weapons and destroyed a number of loaded rocket launchers in southern Lebanon that were ready to fire at the Galilee area.Over the past day, the Air Force attacked dozens of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon including command centers, weapons storage sites, and rocket launchers. Some of the launchers that were used for Sunday’s attacks on the Haifa Bay area and the Sharon region, the IDF said.

Israel said to agree in principle to Lebanon ceasefire offer, though some issues remain-Netanyahu holds consultation reportedly focused on how to sell agreement to public; US envoy said to have warned if no truce now, sides would have to wait for Trump-By ToI Staff 24 November 2024, 11:04 pm

Israel has agreed in principle to a US-backed ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Prime Minister Benjamin is now working on how to present it to the public, according to multiple reports Sunday night, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held high-level consultations on the matter. The meeting came as Israel was hit by waves of rocket fire from Lebanon throughout the day and the Air Force carried out repeated strikes on Hezbollah sites in Beirut. The reports on Kan, Ynet and Haaretz, which cited officials in Jerusalem, Washington and Beirut, all noted that approval of the proposal was not final, and that several issues must still be ironed out, but that Jerusalem had okayed the main tenets of the proposal. According to Ynet, this had been conveyed to Lebanon.Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said last week that the terror group had reviewed the truce proposal and submitted a response and that the ball was in Israel’s court.Haaretz reported that the proposal will include three stages: a truce followed by Hezbollah removing its forces north of the Litani River; an Israeli pullout from southern Lebanon; and finally, Israeli-Lebanese negotiations on demarcation of contested border areas. It said an international body led by the US will be tasked with monitoring the ceasefire, and that Israel expects to receive a letter from Washington affirming its right to act militarily should Hezbollah break the terms of the ceasefire amid no action by Lebanon’s military and international forces. And Kan, on Netanyahu’s plan to sell the deal to the public, said the aim is to present the truce not as a compromise but as beneficial to Israel. The consultation was held with a few senior ministers and security officials, and according to Kan also focused on Israel’s freedom to operate on the borders with Lebanon and Syria after the agreement is finalized.According to multiple Hebrew media reports, US special envoy Amos Hochstein told Israeli officials over the weekend that this was their last chance to move forward with the deal and that if they did not accept it, he would give up his efforts and Israel and Hezbollah would have to wait for incoming president Donald Trump to take office in January before American mediation efforts resumed.Hochstein visited both Beirut and Jerusalem last week to push for the US-backed agreement that would see Hezbollah gradually withdraw north of the Litani River and the Lebanese Army retake responsibility for southern Lebanon.Under the potential ceasefire, the Lebanese Army would be responsible for preventing Hezbollah from reestablishing itself in southern Lebanon. As part of the effort to get an agreement signed this week, former US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro was due to arrive in Israel on Monday to facilitate hammering out the final details of the agreement, Channel 12 reported. As talks continued on Sunday, Hezbollah stepped up its attacks on Israel, firing more than 250 rockets and drones at northern and central Israel throughout the day, wounding several people. The intensity of the terrorist organization’s attacks on Israel on Sunday was not seen as surprising by Israeli officials, according to Channel 12, which reported on Sunday evening that Israel expected Hezbollah’s attacks to increase the closer the sides got to finalizing an agreement. The group’s aim, the channel reported, was to demonstrate that it still had the capabilities to attack Israel and to try and deter it from attacking Beirut.Hezbollah also published an apparently AI-generated photo on Sunday showing damage to a highway from a rocket attack, with a caption threatening that the “fate of Tel Aviv would be the fate of Beirut” if Israel continued to attack the Lebanese capital city.Hezbollah has long tried to impose a balance of power in a bid to deter Israel. However, Ynet reported that Israel also intended to step up its strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut to damage as much of its capabilities as possible before a deal was finalized.Since October 8, 2023, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. Some 60,000 residents were evacuated from northern towns on the Lebanon border shortly after Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, amid fears Hezbollah would carry out a similar attack, and increasing rocket fire by the terror group.Hezbollah has since expanded its attacks to also target cities in central and northern Israel with rockets, in addition to the attacks on the border.Israel stepped up its offensive on Hezbollah in Lebanon in late September, launching extensive strikes and operations that took out most of the group’s leadership, including its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah.Israel then launched a ground operation into southern Lebanon, with the aim of clearing Hezbollah strongholds in the area and making it safe for evacuated residents of northern Israel to return to their homes. The attacks on northern Israel since October 2023 have resulted in the deaths of 44 civilians. In addition, 71 IDF soldiers and reservists have died in cross-border skirmishes and in the ensuing ground operation launched in southern Lebanon in late September. In recent days, heavy ground fighting between the IDF and Hezbollah has continued in southern Lebanon, with Israeli troops pushing farther from the border.

A year since hostage deal, Herzog says not freeing remaining captives a daily failure-President marks anniversary of agreement that secured freedom for 105 captives but has not been repeated since; some families blame government for not reaching ceasefire-By Lazar Berman and Noam Lehmann 24 November 2024, 9:18 pm

President Isaac Herzog on Sunday warned that failure to bring home the remaining hostages held in the Gaza Strip would leave lasting trauma on the country as he stressed the responsibility the state has to see the captives returned.Herzog spoke at an event marking one year since the first group of hostages was released from Gaza, as part of a weeklong ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the only such agreement there has been since the war started.Families of some of those still held in Gaza, as well as some former hostages who were released last November, held their own event, at which they panned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for not saving the hostages. Some 1,200 people were killed and 251 were seized as hostages on October 7 last year, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists poured through the Gaza border into Israel and rampaged through dozens of southern communities.Israel’s subsequent ongoing military campaign is formally aimed at destroying Hamas and saving the hostages. While noting that there have been achievements in the ongoing war, Herzog emphasized that every day that the hostages are not back in Israel “is a failure.”“We must understand and internalize that if we do not bring them home, we will be left with a bleeding, open wound that will forever burn our souls as a society and as a nation,” Herzog said.Herzog noted that he said as much in his recent conversations with incoming US president Donald Trump and US President Joe Biden in the White House, when the Israeli president visited the United States two weeks ago.Returning the hostages is “the highest and most binding order between a state and its citizens,” he declared. In November last year, a mediated truce between Israel and Hamas saw the terror group release batches of hostages every day for a week during which time Israel set free 240 Palestinian security prisoners it was holding. Though the truce was supposed to continue for several more days along with the release of more hostages, the arrangement collapsed, with Israel saying at the time that Hamas had violated the terms.Hamas released 105 women and children during the week the truce held up in late November, and four hostages were released before that. Eight hostages have been rescued by troops alive, and the bodies of 37 hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the military as they tried to escape their captors. It is believed that 97 of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 34 confirmed dead by the IDF. Hamas is also holding two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well as the bodies of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.Captivity survivors and relatives of hostages still in Gaza gathered at the Tel Aviv headquarters of the Hostage Families Forum, a non-government group that represents many of the hostages’ families. As the auditorium filled up, a slideshow projected on a large screen showed pictures of hostages reuniting with their families last November.“Negotiators have so far failed to secure another truce-hostage deal. The Forum in a statement demanded a deal that would release all remaining hostages at once, fearing a staggered-release agreement, as outlined in previous draft proposals, would collapse before all the captives were home.Speaking at the event were three women released during the November 2023 deal: Raz Ben Ami, whose husband Ohad Ben Ami is still captive; Gabriela Leimberg, whose partner and brother were rescued by the military three months later; and Danielle Aloni, whose brother-in-law, David Cunio, is still captive along with his brother Ariel. Aloni, and her daughter Emilia, were in the first batch of hostages released on November 24, 2023.Michel Illouz, father of slain hostage Guy Illouz, and Yifat Zailer, sister of hostage Shiri Bibas, also spoke.Ben Ami said the “total victory” over Hamas touted by Netanyahu as a war goal is “just big words.”“You don’t need to be a genius to realize that doesn’t go together” with saving the hostages, she said. “We have seen that the [military] pressure kills them.”On Saturday, Hamas claimed that a female hostage was killed in the northern Gaza Strip, with the Israel Defense Forces saying it could neither confirm nor deny it.Leimberg said she survived captivity by imagining being reunited with her family.“Captivity is hell,” she said. “The only light is hope.”“It’s hard for me to believe the hostages still have hope and that they can imagine their return,” she added.Leimberg recalled that her partner, Luis Har, and brother Fernando Merman, were slated to be released days after she was.“We left them with a heavy heart,” she said. “Over 70 days passed before they returned in an operation.”Har and Merman were rescued in a military operation in February 2024.The November deal, Leimberg said, brought back “105 living hostages — more than can be brought back in a rescue mission.”Aloni said she and her daughters still experience the trauma of their captivity — “sleep deprivation, fear of separation, fear of noise, night terrors, stranger anxiety and above all — the fear that every day we could be abducted again.”Noting that tomorrow is the UN’s Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, she said: “We know for a fact that [the women still in captivity] are being brutally raped, molested, attacked, and abused.”“It could easily have been your daughter,” who was kidnapped, Aloni said. “We must understand that if it happened once, it could happen a second time, and even a third.”She assailed the government for “failing anew, every day, to bring them back.”Zailer spoke about the pain of not knowing what happened to the Bibas family: her cousin Shiri, 5-year-old nephew Ariel, 1-year-old Kfir, and the boys’ father Yarden.“Until there is no confirmation, they are alive, as far as we are concerned,” she says. “That’s the least they deserve.”Last November, Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir were slated for return the very day hostilities resumed.“What would have happened if we had waited one more day?” Zailer asked in tears. She recalled how “our heart burst with joy and panged with envy” watching the other hostages be reunited with their families.Hamas claimed last November that Shiri Bibas and her two children, Ariel and Kfir, abducted at just 4 years old and 9 months old, respectively, had been killed in captivity. The IDF has said this cannot be confirmed, and their fate remains unknown.“Only with a deal that brings back all the hostages can I know my family’s fate,” Zailer said.Later, in English, she addressed international media: “We need the international community’s help. We can’t do this alone.”Illouz, who recalled the last phone call he got from his son, said, “Nothing will erase the shame of this country… no amount of responsibility-shirking by this despicable government,” if the hostages are not returned. He pleaded that Netanyahu “save us from our misery and put an end to our desperation.”“The regeneration and hope of this country hinges entirely on your willingness to end the fighting in Gaza,” he said.Netanyahu has insisted that Israel can both continue fighting and recover the rest of the captives, despite mediators insisting that the best way to get the hostages out is via a deal. Reports in recent days have suggested that senior defense officials concur, warning Netanyahu that the captives are being endangered by the ongoing war and advising him that striking a deal with Hamas is the only way to free them.Time of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Canada's assisted dying programme has gone too far, says lawyer who tried to take his own life-Orlando Da Silva, who has struggled with crippling depression, argues that people like him need help with their condition - not help to die.Ashish Joshi-Monday 25 November 2024 17:31, UK

Warning: This article contains references to suicide-On Friday this week, MPs will debate if England and Wales should legalise assisted dying. The proposed legislation restricts it to adults with six months or less to live.Canada introduced assisted dying in 2016 for adults with a terminal illness. In 2021, it was extended to people with no terminal illness and the disabled. On 17 March 2027, anyone with a serious mental health problem will also be eligible.Campaigners in Canada argue that the programme, known as MAID [medical assistance in dying], has gone too far. Orlando Da Silva has struggled with crippling depression since he was a nine-year-old boy.The high-flying Ontario lawyer is 56 years old now and has tried to take his own life a number of times. He says if MAID had been offered to him when he was at his lowest, he would have taken the option to end his life. But he argues that people like him need help with their condition - not help to die."You just think you're a worthless little boy and eventually a worthless teenager, and then one day, a worthless man," Orlando says, describing the impact of his mental health on his childhood and later into his adult life.Assisted dying: Lessons from Canada-Working as a top barrister in the province of Ontario helped Orlando. It was a distraction from the suicidal thoughts that would overwhelm him when he left his office on the 47th floor of a downtown Toronto skyscraper."If you could measure it on a scale of zero to 10 [where] 10 is the happiest you've ever been, and zero is suicidal, my cruising altitude is about five or six, so I rarely get better than that."Orlando has received almost all of the conventional therapies available for his condition."Now I have a condition called treatment-resistant depression, which means I've been on more than 40 different kinds of antidepressants. I've had 13 electroconvulsive shock treatments. I've been on ketamine treatments. And nothing works."So the critical problem for me with this condition is that it escalates into a major depressive episode every 18 to 24 months."Safeguards in place for Orlando-He says he has now learned how to manage his depression by reminding himself that the cycle will eventually end no matter how impossible the situation might feel at the time."I just push myself through one day at a time. Sometimes it's one hour at a time, one minute at a time, one breath until the next one. Because I know it doesn't last forever, but when I'm in that moment, I think it will, and there's nothing anyone can say to convince me."MPs split ahead of assisted dying vote-He also has safeguards in place designed to protect him from himself."I've developed tools and a support network and even a 10-point scale that I share with my family and friends, so they can see how I'm doing, and they know I'm at a three or below, it's time for an intervention."Orlando nearly died in 2008 after a failed suicide attempt. It led to six months in hospital. He is now using his experience to try and help others like him who might choose an assisted death when they are allowed to in just over two years."It scares me to death. If it was available earlier, I would have chosen it in 1994. I would have tried it and I would have asked for it in 2002, in 2004, in 2008 and when I attempted my suicide in 2012, in 2014. And I'm alive because it's not available now and because I failed in 2008."Fears over Canada's programme-The move to include mental illness in Canada's assisted dying programme was delayed twice because of fears around the impact it will have on the country's health system.By offering people with mental health issues an assisted death, Orlando warns, it further reinforces their sense of worthlessness."You want the pain to end, right? And the last thing you need is someone in a white coat who says: 'Well, I see it's kind of rough for you. How about we help you and your life? Do you like that? "Now, does that say you're worthwhile if you hear that? Does that say you have value? Does that contradict that voice in your head? Or does it reaffirm and confirm it?""We need to help. We need to give hope. Don't need an easy death, like I want us to be a better society than that. If they say we're judged by how we treat our most vulnerable. How do we treat people with mental illness who want to die?"Orlando's struggle is not over. But for him life is worth living no matter how hard it gets."Thank God I didn't succeed, thank God I failed because if I had succeeded, I would never have met my wife."I never would have had my three beautiful daughters. I never would have had the rewarding personal and professional career I've had since and I would never have learned all that's beautiful in this world from them."Anyone feeling emotionally distressed or suicidal can call Samaritans for help on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org in the UK. SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST

Ideas-Why Ukrainian soldiers came to Idaho to study nuclear forensics-Hint: It’s an essential element of U.S. deterrence strategy.By Paul Menser and Corinne Dionisio-November 20, 2024

It’s a long way from the Donbas region of Ukraine to Idaho, but Ukrainian officials recently made the trip to learn about collecting evidence after a nuclear attack.Ten soldiers from the Armed Forces of Ukraine and 10 members from the Security Services of Ukraine spent a week at Idaho National Laboratory learning and practicing debris collection techniques for post-detonation nuclear forensics.Nuclear forensics, which includes the science of determining the origin of nuclear materials used in a detonation, is an essential element of the United States' deterrence strategy. Being able to trace the source of material used in a nuclear device allows the U.S. to credibly hold accountable any state complicit in an act of nuclear terrorism. While Ukraine has practiced nuclear forensics as part of its counter-nuclear-smuggling efforts, officials sought to learn more about how to apply nuclear forensics in a post-detonation scenario after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. INL’s decades of research, expertise and support to U.S. nuclear forensics operations position it as one of the few entities capable of providing Ukraine with nuclear forensics support.Although it is highly unlikely that Russia would use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine, “Ukraine takes the threat of a Russian nuclear attack very seriously,” said INL’s David Chichester, a directorate fellow who develops radiation measurement systems and consults on nuclear counterproliferation and forensics. “They have tackled it aggressively because the threat is real to them,” he said. While the Ukrainian visitors got a chance to enjoy Idaho Falls’ American heartland amenities during their stay, the war was never far from their minds. During their time in the U.S., they would often be alerted in real time about attacks back home.During the training exercises, Ukrainian officials were assisted by experts with years of nuclear forensics training expertise from INL, Argonne National Laboratory, the Kansas City National Security Campus—Albuquerque, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Nevada National Security Site, and the National Nuclear Security Administration. NNSA, a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy, is responsible for the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile, naval nuclear propulsion, and nuclear nonproliferation and counterterrorism programs.Clad in personal protective equipment at locations throughout INL’s Research and Education Campus in Idaho Falls, Ukrainian officials learned proper techniques for sweeping areas, gathering dust and debris, placing it into radiation shielded storage casks called lead “pigs,” and loading the parcels into vehicles for transport. The Ukrainian delegation said the training was effective and useful. “We wish to thank you for inviting us to this training and hosting us in your city,” said one participant, speaking through a translator. “The [response capabilities] we are learning this week will absolutely be implemented when we return home to Ukraine.”The participants’ names have been withheld for security purposes.“The support and training you are providing to us means more than you know,” said another Ukrainian official. Instructors from the national labs and NNSA who led the training exercise are part of the Department of Energy Forensics Operations team. These U.S. experts are on call 365 days a year to collect nuclear detonation debris samples for analysis. They can respond at a moment’s notice during an emergency. DFO uses specialized aircraft and equipment to establish mobile command centers and forensics laboratories anywhere in the world. The materials they collect may be brought to the U.S. for further analysis.DFO’s capabilities are especially relevant given Russia’s reputation for exploiting misinformation. It’s important for Ukraine to possess the ability to incontrovertibly prove the source of nuclear materials. INL and NNSA’s nuclear forensics expertise helped advance their capabilities.DFO has evolved in response to Ukraine’s ongoing conflict. “The relationship with Ukraine has prompted some changes in DFO,” said C.J. Johnson, senior adviser to the Department of Energy’s NNSA Ukraine Task Force. “We had to turn responders into teachers,” he said.“The point of this [exercise] is to build the capability for collecting high-quality samples for analysis,” said Johnson. “Until two years ago Ukraine had no capability of this kind.”The U.S. began conducting post-detonation forensics exercises close to 20 years ago when the National Security Council asked what would happen if the country needed to collect debris for analysis after a nuclear detonation. Around that time, INL's national security and nuclear nonproliferation capabilities in support of NNSA were starting to grow, leading to the first ground debris collection exercise in 2005. Since then, INL has hosted annual nuclear forensics training exercises for U.S. first responders in case the unthinkable should happen.“There is no better place in the world to do nuclear forensics training than the national labs,” said Johnson. “The capabilities and expertise the labs — including INL — have for conducting real-world training is unmatched.”In addition to INL and the NNSA’s Office of Nuclear Forensics, the Ukrainian team’s visit to INL was supported by the U.S. Department of State. Nuclear forensics training events provide an opportunity for scientists and security experts to practice the tactics, techniques and procedures they would employ following a real-world nuclear attack. The relationships and mutual trust developed while working together through realistic scenarios are equally valuable. “You can't maintain a proficient level of this capability if you don't train," Chichester said.

Threats-Russian nuclear doctrine change does not indicate imminent attack, Pentagon says-While the Kremlin’s broadening of nuclear posture seems alarming, experts say future escalation could take a different path.By Patrick Tucker-Science & Technology Editor, Defense One-November 19, 2024

The United States sees “no indications” that Russia is prepping for a nuclear attack, the Pentagon said Tuesday, despite the Kremlin’s announcement of a change in nuclear posture. And while the doctrine change is alarming, experts say, it doesn’t mean the world is on the brink of nuclear war.The Russian government on Tuesday announced a broadening of its nuclear doctrine, which allows for the use of nuclear weapons against a non-nuclear attack, and allows for strikes against Western nations that are supplying weapons to countries engaged in conflict with Russia—namely Ukraine. The doctrine was originally changed in September, but Russian government officials are now linking the public change to reported Ukrainian attacks with U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles on Russian territory. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Brazil, said the Ukrainian use of the missiles “is a signal that they want escalation. Using such sophisticated missiles without the Americans is impossible. Putin warned about this and about how our position will change.” Michael Kofman, a senior fellow in the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told Defense One the new doctrine “emphasizes that the Russian president decides when to use nuclear weapons, which ultimately is what matters. In the end, this is intentionally ambiguous language, intended to signal and deter, while much comes down to one person's interpretation of this criteria.”

World War III is officially here…: Ukraine ex-commander claims N. Korea, Iran, China siding with Russia in conflict-Former Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny asserts that the Third World War has begun, citing the involvement of Russia, the US, and global players like North Korea and Iran in the Ukraine conflict. He emphasizes the international scope of the war with foreign soldiers and weapons present.Livemint-Updated24 Nov 2024, 07:21 AM IST

‘Third World War has begun,’ Valery Zaluzhny, the former Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine, claimed noting that ‘two superpowers, Russia and the US being directly involved in the Ukraine war’ proves that. He highlights that currently the tension escalated beyond borders involving global players like North Korea, Iran, and potentially China.“I believe that in 2024 we can absolutely believe that the Third World War has begun,” Zaluzhny said during an event, according to Politico. He noted the involvement of North Korean soldiers, the use of Iranian drones deliberately targeting civilians, and the flow of North Korean and Chinese weapons into the conflict as clear indications of the war's broader international scope.“Because in 2024, Ukraine is no longer facing Russia. Soldiers from North Korea are standing in front of Ukraine. Let's be honest,” he said and added, ”Already in Ukraine, the Iranian 'Shahedis' are killing civilians absolutely openly, without any shame."Zaluzhny was dismissed from his military position in February following reported disagreements with Zelenskyy regarding war strategies stated that that the Russia-Ukraine war can be stopped, “on the territory of Ukraine. But for some reason, our partners refuse to understand this.” He also emphasised that ““With advanced technology, Ukraine can endure, but victory remains uncertain without greater support.”‘West can't stop,’ Putin says Russia attacked Ukraine with a new missile-The Kremlin fired a new intermediate-range ballistic missile at Ukraine on Thursday in response to Kyiv's use this week of American and British missiles capable of striking deeper into Russia, President Vladimir Putin said.In a televised address to the country, the Russian president warned that U.S. air defense systems would be powerless to stop the new missile, which he said flies at ten times the speed of sound and which he called the Oreshnik — Russian for hazelnut tree. He also said it could be used to attack any Ukrainian ally whose missiles are used to attack Russia.“We believe that we have the right to use our weapons against military facilities of the countries that allow to use their weapons against our facilities,” Putin said in his first comments since President Joe Biden gave Ukraine the green light this month to use U.S. ATACMS missiles to strike at limited targets inside Russia.

NATO and Ukraine to Hold Emergency Talks After Russia's Attack with New Hypersonic Missile-Associated Press | By Illia Novikov and Volodymyr Yurchuk-Published November 22, 2024 at 12:45 pm

KYIV, Ukraine — NATO and Ukraine will hold emergency talks Tuesday after Russia attacked a central city with an experimental, hypersonic ballistic missile that escalated the nearly 33-month-old war.The conflict is “entering a decisive phase,” Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Friday, and “taking on very dramatic dimensions.”Ukraine’s parliament canceled a session as security was tightened following Thursday's Russian strike on a military facility in the city of Dnipro. In a stark warning to the West, President Vladimir Putin said in a nationally televised speech to his nation that the attack with the intermediate-range Oreshnik missile was retaliation for Kyiv’s use of U.S. and British longer-range missiles capable of striking deeper into Russian territory.Putin said Western air defense systems would be powerless to stop the new missile.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov kept up Russia's bellicose tone on Friday, blaming “the reckless decisions and actions of Western countries” in supplying weapons to Ukraine to strike Russia."The Russian side has clearly demonstrated its capabilities, and the contours of further retaliatory actions in the event that our concerns were not taken into account have also been quite clearly outlined," he said.Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, widely seen as having the warmest relations with the Kremlin in the European Union, echoed Moscow's talking points, suggesting the use of U.S.-supplied weapons in Ukraine likely requires direct American involvement.“These are rockets that are fired and then guided to a target via an electronic system, which requires the world’s most advanced technology and satellite communications capability,” Orbán said on state radio. “There is a strong assumption … that these missiles cannot be guided without the assistance of American personnel.”Orbán cautioned against underestimating Russia’s responses, emphasizing that the country’s recent modifications to its nuclear deployment doctrine should not be dismissed as a “bluff.” “It’s not a trick… there will be consequences,” he said.Separately in Kyiv, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský called Thursday's missile strike an “escalatory step and an attempt of the Russian dictator to scare the population of Ukraine and to scare the population of Europe.”At a news conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Lipavský also expressed his full support for delivering the necessary additional air defense systems to protect Ukrainian civilians from the “heinous attacks.”He underlined that the Czech Republic will impose no limits on the use of its weapons and equipment given to Ukraine.Three lawmakers from Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, confirmed that Friday's previously scheduled session was called off due to the ongoing threat of Russian missiles targeting government buildings in central Kyiv.In addition, there also was a recommendation to limit the work of all commercial offices and nongovernmental organizations "in that perimeter, and local residents were warned of the increased threat,” said lawmaker Mykyta Poturaiev, who added this is not the first time such a threat has been received.President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office continued to work in compliance with standard security measures, a spokesperson said.Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate said the Oreshnik missile, whose name in Russian means “hazelnut tree,” was fired from the Kapustin Yar 4th Missile Test Range in Russia’s Astrakhan region, and flew 15 minutes before striking Dnipro. The missile had six nonnuclear warheads each carrying six submunitions and reached a spoeed of Mach 11, it said.Test launches of a similar missile were conducted in October 2023 and June 2024, the directorate said. The Pentagon confirmed the missile was a new, experimental type of intermediate-range missile based on its RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile.Thursday's attack struck the Pivdenmash plant that built ICBMs when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. The military facility is located about 4 miles (6 1/2 kilometers) southwest of the center of Dnipro, a city of about 1 million that is Ukraine’s fourth-largest and a key hub for military supplies and humanitarian aid, and is home to one of the country’s largest hospitals for treating wounded soldiers from the front before their transfer to Kyiv or abroad. The stricken area was cordoned off and out of public view. With no fatalities reported from the attack, Dnipro residents resorted to dark humor on social media, mostly focused on the missile’s name, Oreshnik.Elsewhere in Ukraine, Russia struck a residential district of Sumy overnight with Iranian-designed Shahed drones, killing two people and injuring 13, the regional administration said..Ukraine’s Suspilne media, quoting Sumy regional head Volodymyr Artiukh, said the drones were stuffed with shrapnel elements. “These weapons are used to destroy people, not to destroy objects,” said Artiukh, according to Suspilne.Associated Press journalists Lorne Cook in Brussels, Samya Kullab in Kyiv, Dasha Litvinova in Tallinn, Estonia, and Justin Spike in Budapest, Hungary, contributed.

South Korea Says Russia Supplied Air Defense Missiles to North Korea in Return for Its Troops-Associated Press | By Hyung-Jin Kim and Kim Tong-Hyung-Published November 22, 2024 at 9:21am ET

SEOUL, South Korea — Russia has supplied air defense missile systems to North Korea in exchange for sending its troops to support Russia's war efforts against Ukraine, a top South Korean official said Friday. The U.S., South Korea and Ukraine say North Korea sent more than 10,000 troops to Russia in October, some of whom have recently begun engaging in combat on the front lines. North Korea's troop deployment threatens to escalate the war, and what Russia could give to the North in return has been a source of rampant international speculation. The most alarming development for South Korea and the U.S. would be Russia transferring sophisticated weapons technology that can enhance North Korea's nuclear-capable missiles targeting its rivals. Many experts say, though, that it is unlikely Russia would do this in the initial stage of the North’s troop deployment.Shin Wonsik, national security adviser for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, told an SBS TV program Friday that South Korea has found Russia provided missiles and other equipment to help it reinforce its air defense network for Pyongyang, the capital. Shin didn’t say what specific missiles Russia gave to North Korea.Lee Illwoo, an expert with the Korea Defense Network in South Korea, said that Russia has likely sent S-400 long-range surface-to-air missiles, launchers and ground-based radar systems. He said that North Korea is capable of building shorter-range surface-to-air missiles on its own.The S-400 missile, with a range of 400 kilometers (250 miles), is considered one of Russia’s most advanced anti-aircraft weapons. But Lee questioned how significantly it can boost Pyongyang’s air defense, saying Russian air defense systems have failed to effectively deal with Ukrainian drone assaults. Many observers say North Korea has likely felt the urgent need to boost its air defense capabilities after it last month accused South Korea of flying drones to scatter propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang. North Korea threatened to take military action if leaflets were again dropped. South Korea’s military has refused to confirm whether or not it was behind the alleged drone flights.Kim Dae Young, a military expert at the Korea Research Institute for National Strategy, said it’s possible that the air defense systems North Korea acquired from Russia could include counter-drone equipment.Kim said that Pyongyang's outdated air defense system would need years of improvement and potentially huge external help to cope with the superior air forces of South Korea and the United States.Shin said Russia has also appeared to have given economic assistance to North Korea and various military technologies, including those needed for the North's efforts to build a reliable space-based surveillance system. Shin didn’t say whether Russia has already transferred sensitive nuclear and missile technologies to North Korea.During a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin already said that Moscow was willing to help the North build satellites. North Korea put its first spy satellite into orbit in November last year, but foreign experts question whether that satellite can produce militarily meaningful imagery. The North's attempt to launch a second spy satellite failed in May.North Korea and Russia have been sharply boosting their military and other cooperation in the face of separate confrontations with the U.S. and its allies. Last month, South Korea's spy agency said that North Korea had sent more than 13,000 containers of artillery, missiles and other conventional arms to Russia since August 2023 to replenish its dwindling weapons stockpiles. The National Intelligence Service said Wednesday that North Korea had recently sent additional artillery systems to Russia.Earlier this week, North Korea and Russia reached a new agreement for expanding economic cooperation following high-level talks in Pyongyang this week, according to the countries’ state-run media.

Five European countries will step up their support to strengthen Ukraine's defence industry, Germany's defence minister has said.Following a meeting with his French, British, Polish and Italian counterparts today, Boris Pistorius said: "Our target must be to enable Ukraine to act out of a position of strength."For context: The Ukrainian army has entered its third winter of the war and the conflict has also taken on a growing international dimension with the arrival of North Korean troops to help Russia on the battlefield. The development prompted Biden's policy shift on allowing Ukraine to fire longer-range US missiles into Russia this month and that angered the Kremlin. And then unconfirmed news reports said Ukraine had fired British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles at Russia for the first time. British and Ukrainian officials did not confirm the reports.Officials with France's military and president's office, meanwhile, declined to say whether Ukraine is using French long-range SCALP missiles to strike targets in Russia, citing France's military secrecy policy. But French President Emmanuel Macron has been advocating for such a step for months.

Germany charges four for setting up Hamas weapons depots across Europe-Prosecution says suspects had ties to senior Hamas leaders and established several arms caches that would be available for use in terror attacks against Israeli and Jewish sites-By AFP and ToI Staff Today, 9:37 pm-NOV 25,24

BERLIN, Germany — German federal prosecutors said Monday they had charged four suspected members of Hamas, allegedly tasked with sourcing and storing weapons for the Palestinian terror group in Europe. Two men born in Lebanon, an Egyptian citizen and a Dutch man were suspected of “membership in a foreign terrorist organization,” the federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement. The men “held important positions within the association with direct ties to leaders of the military wing” of Hamas, prosecutors said. One of the two suspects born in Lebanon, named by prosecutors only as Ibrahim El-R., was said to have set up a weapons storage site for Hamas in Bulgaria.Established in early 2019, the Bulgarian depot contained weapons, including a Kalashnikov assault rifle, and ammunition, prosecutors said.In mid-2019, Ibrahim El-R. had “cleared out” another weapons cache in Denmark and was said by prosecutors to have brought a pistol from there to Germany.Between June and December 2023, all four suspects were said to have set off from Berlin in search of another Hamas weapons store in Poland, but failed to locate it, according to investigators.Prosecutors said Hamas had long ago “set up underground weapons depots in various European countries in order to keep them ready for possible attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe.”The storage sites were maintained by foreign operatives in possession or European residence permits, ready to be “deployed at short notice,” prosecutors said.Hamas had identified the “Israeli embassy in Berlin, the US Air Base in Ramstein or the area around Tempelhof Airport in Berlin as possible targets,” they said. The four suspects were arrested in December last year. Dutch national Nazih R. was detained in Rotterdam by local police, while the other three were arrested in Berlin.Germany issued a ban on Hamas activities and organizations linked to the group in the wake of the terror group’s assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which some 1,200 people were killed and another 251 taken hostageThe massacre triggered the war in Gaza.

Israel raises travel warning for Thailand amid ‘persistence of threat’National Security Council advises avoiding large events associated with Israel, especially if advertised in advance-By Lazar Berman-24 November 2024, 4:26 pm

The National Security Council raised the travel warning for Thailand to Level 2 on Sunday, citing a continuing threat to Israelis in the Southeast Asian country, in a follow-up to an alert it first issued nearly two weeks ago.On November 12 the the NSC called on Israelis to display increased vigilance due to “the emergence of a potential threat to Israelis” in Thailand-The NSC said it issued the fresh alert “in light of the persistence of the threat.” It stressed that the threat has not grown but the council was “sharpening and bolstering” its recommendations.Level 2 recommends travelers “take increased precautionary measures,” but is not seen as a call to avoid or leave the country altogether.Israelis should “avoid attending large-scale events associated with Israel, with an emphasis on those announced in advance, or places of entertainment and gathering associated with Israel. Notify local security forces if you are exposed to hostile activity targeting Israelis,” the NSC said. The November 12 warning came as Thai police reportedly cautioned of a terror plot at the November 15 Full Moon party on the popular vacation island of Koh Phangan where there were believed to be thousands, if not tens of thousands of Israeli visitors. Those warnings came amid allegations of an Iran-backed plot on Israeli tourists in Sri Lanka linked to an assassination attempt on US President-elect Donald Trump-A severe travel alert for Sri Lanka was removed on November 14.The latest warning about Thailand came as the body of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, an emissary to Abu Dhabi’s Chabad chapter, was found after he had been missing since last week.Israel’s embassy called the killing of Kogan “a despicable antisemitic act of terror.”Officials suspect a number of Uzbek citizens recruited by Iran assaulted the rabbi and later fled to Turkey, the Ynet outlet reported.Israel has been on high alert for Iranian efforts to harm Israelis and Jews around the world through its various agents and proxies after the countries exchanged direct military blows for the first time this year.Iran launched major drone and ballistic missile attacks against Israel in April and October, in response to Israeli strikes on its proxies in Lebanon and Syria. In late October, Israel retaliated with a series of strikes in which dozens of aircraft targeted strategic military sites across Iran as well as air defense batteries.Iran has vowed to respond but has not yet done so in any major capacity.

IDF hits targets across Lebanon, at Syria border crossing-Several Israelis hurt by relentless Hezbollah fire as 250 rockets fired at north, center-Woman wounded when car catches fire after rocket impact in Petah Tikvah; residential buildings damaged in Haifa amid heavy barrage; IDF strikes in Beirut-By Emanuel Fabian,ToI Staff and AFP 24 November 2024, 11:24 am

Several people were wounded by rocket fire on Sunday as the Hezbollah terror group fired more than 250 rockets and drones at northern and central Israel in several salvos throughout the day, according to the military and medics. In northern Israel, a man in his 60s was hit by shrapnel to the stomach while working in a field in the Kfar Blum area, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service. He was seriously injured, and taken to Ziv Hospital in Safed for treatment. In Haifa, two men in their fifties were lightly hurt by shrapnel during a rocket barrage on the northern port city, MDA said, and one other person was being treated for acute anxiety. The barrage also caused damage to a residential building in the area.Earlier on Sunday, a woman in her 50s was lightly injured by shrapnel following rocket fire on the Western Galilee at around 7:30 a.m.The rocket impact also caused damage to a factory in the northern town of Ma’alot-Tarshiha.The IDF said that some 30 rockets and drones were launched in the early morning attack, some of which were intercepted by air defenses. The military said two of the drones were intercepted and “additional interception attempts were made,” but did not specify how many apparently crashed. It said the incident ended with no immediate reports of injuries as a result of the drones.Minutes later, rocket sirens blared in cities and towns north of Tel Aviv, including in Netanya and Herzliya. The IDF later said that six rockets had been fired toward the center of the country from Lebanon, five of which were intercepted by aerial defenses. The sixth rocket struck an open area, although there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.A second barrage of eight rockets was fired at central Israel at around 1:00 p.m., one of which impacted in the city of Petah Tikvah and another in the agricultural community of Rinatya.Central Israel was again targeted in the evening with several missiles fired, some intercepted while others fell in open areas. In the aftermath of the strike in Petah Tikva, Magen David Adom said it was treating a 70-year-old woman suffering from smoke inhalation due to a car that caught fire as a result of the impact. The woman was said to be in moderate condition.Several other people were receiving treatment for acute anxiety and minor injuries sustained while running to shelter, medics said.Heavy damage was also sustained to homes in Rinatya after a rocket struck there. The owners of one of the houses were not home at the time, Channel 12 reported, as they were on a tour of Kibbutz Kfar Aza in the south, which was one of the hardest-hit communities in the October 7 Hamas onslaught.Relatives of the couple told the outlet that the home had no reinforced area and that the elderly couple would have not been able to shelter had they been home during the attack. Most of the remaining rockets fired at the center of the country were intercepted, and the military said it was investigating possible damage caused by shrapnel following the interceptions.Amid the heavy rocket fire from Lebanon, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee issued evacuation warnings for two buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs, ahead of airstrikes on Hezbollah assets.A short while later, reports in Lebanese media indicated that Israel was carrying out strikes in the Hezbollah stronghold of Dahiyeh, Beirut’s southern suburbs.Elsewhere in Lebanon, IDF said that it had also struck the Hezbollah launcher that was used in the attack on Haifa earlier on Sunday, and released footage of the strike. The IDF says it struck a Hezbollah rocket launcher used in an attack earlier today on the Haifa area. pic.twitter.com/fStbIyQcwT— Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) November 24, 2024-In a separate incident on Sunday, one Lebanese Armed Forces soldier was killed and 18 others were injured, some seriously, after an Israeli strike on an army center n the town of Al-Amiriya on the Al-Qalila-Tyre road in southern Lebanon. The LAF said that the attack caused severe damage to the facility. After probing the incident, the IDF apologized for the strike.“The incident took place in an area where fighting is ongoing against the Hezbollah terror organization,” the Israeli military said in response to a query by The Times of Israel.“The IDF regrets the incident and clarifies that it is fighting in a targeted manner against the Hezbollah terror organization, and not against the Lebanese Army,” the military said, adding that the incident is under further investigation.Earlier on Sunday, the IDF confirmed reports that it had launched airstrikes at the Jusiyah Crossing on the Syrian-Lebanon border Saturday night, after it was being used by Hezbollah to transport weapons. The crossing had been struck already once before by the IDF, last month. The military said fighter jets hit military infrastructure in the vicinity of the crossing, which it said were used by the Hezbollah terror organization to transfer weapons from Syria to Lebanon.Israel has struck several other crossings between Lebanon and Syria in recent months, amid efforts by Iran to supply Hezbollah with weapons. On Saturday, Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon killed over 55 people, according to Lebanon’s health ministry, whose tolls do not distinguish between combatants and civilians. One strike conducted without warning on a central Beirut building killed at least 20 people and wounded scores more, Lebanese officials said.A Lebanese security source told AFP that the central Beirut strike had “targeted a leading Hezbollah figure,” but a Hezbollah lawmaker, Amin Sherri, denied to Lebanese media that any official was present at the time of the attack.Israeli airstrikes also hit eastern Lebanon, killing 24 people ,including 13 in the town of Shmostar overlooking the Beqaa Valley, a Hezbollah stronghold. In Lebanon’s south, at least 14 were killed including five in the coastal city of Tyre, the health ministry said.Late Saturday night, the IDF said that a drone launched from Lebanon was shot down by air defenses off the coast of Haifa, and that no sirens were activated as the drone did not get close to population centers, the IDF added.Since October 8, 2023, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. In recent days, heavy ground fighting between the IDF and Hezbollah has continued in southern Lebanon, with Israeli troops pushing farther from the border.Still, in the past week Israeli and American officials have expressed guarded optimism about the possibility of securing a ceasefire, after US envoy Amos Hochstein made visits to both Beirut and Jerusalem to discuss terms. A senior Israeli defense official has said there is a high likelihood of a deal.On Friday afternoon, Channel 12 published details on what it said were the remaining points of contention between Israel and Hezbollah, namely the formation of an international committee that will monitor a deal’s implementation, as well as a number of border demarcation disputes. The network said Israel was demanding language in the agreement that would allow it to unilaterally choose not to engage in negotiations over disputed points.A senior official told the channel that “most of the details have been agreed upon, but what remains open is very sensitive and could still derail the agreement.”As of last month, the IDF estimated that over 12,400 rockets and drones have been fired at Israel from Lebanon during the war. The attacks on northern Israel since October 2023 have resulted in the deaths of 44 civilians. In addition, 71 IDF soldiers and reservists have died in cross-border skirmishes and in the ground operation launched in southern Lebanon in late September.Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,670 people and injured 15,413 in Lebanon since October 2023, Lebanon’s health ministry said on Saturday. The IDF estimates that some 3,000 Hezbollah operatives have been killed in the conflict. Around 100 members of other terror groups, along with hundreds of civilians, have also been reported killed in Lebanon.

JTA — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government would not tolerate antisemitism after a violent pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel demonstration in Montreal at which protesters burned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in effigy. The Canadian prime minister was one of several officials to condemn the protest, which opposed a NATO conference on Friday night and after which three protesters were arrested. It was one of a series of anti-Israel actions in recent days that have led to fallout in the Quebec metropolis, from the shuttering of a cafe in the city’s Jewish General Hospital to the cancelation of an Israeli-made film at a local festival.“What we saw on the streets of Montreal last night was appalling,” Trudeau said in a statement on Saturday. “Acts of antisemitism, intimidation, and violence must be condemned wherever we see them.”The demonstrators, many of whom came from student groups, protested the Western military alliance due to members’ support for Israel in its multi-front war, which began when Palestinian terror group Hamas launched a shock attack that killed 1.200 people and saw 251 seized and taken to Gaza on October 7, 2023. A day later, Lebanon-based terror group Hezbollah started launching drones and missiles at Israel.According to Canadian media reports, demonstrators smashed windows, burnt vehicles, attacked police officers and set off smoke bombs and fireworks during the protest.Attendees could be seen waving Palestinian, Lebanese and Iranian flags as well as one with the hammer and sickle, a communist symbol. Some protesters held a banner reading “intifada” in Arabic, a reference to violent Palestinian uprisings against Israel in which hundreds of people were murdered in bombings and stabbings in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.In Montreal, protests erupted ahead of NATO’s annual summit, turning violent as anti-NATO and pro-Palestinian demonstrators clashed with police. Canada is one of several countries to confirm that it would arrest Netanyahu based on the warrant.“This was nothing like lawful, peaceful protest,” said Bill Blair, Canada’s defense minister, at a conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “This was anarchy. It was an engagement in violence and hatred on display in the city of Montreal.”He added, “Those behaviors are unacceptable and we condemn them, and in particular the hatred and antisemitism that was on display, in the strongest possible terms.”For over a year, Canadian cities have been repeatedly taken over by hateful anti-Israel protests, with protesters bringing chaos to our streets. Our political leaders need to stop excusing extremism. Police must enforce the law. And all Canadians must take antisemitism seriously—NOW.”Friday’s demonstration came one day after a participant in another anti-Israel demonstration was filmed saying “Final Solution is coming your way, the Final Solution.” The term “Final Solution” was the Nazi euphemism for the extermination of Jews in the Holocaust. The protester in question was later identified as the owner of two franchises of Second Cup, a Canadian coffee chain, located at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital. The company said in a statement that it is closing those locations and terminating the owner’s contract. It will continue paying staff and plans to reopen under new management, according to the CBC.Official Statement pic.twitter.com/7gSUjcjAJZ— Second Cup Café (@SecondCupCanada) November 23, 2024“Second Cup has zero tolerance for hate speech,” the company’s statement said. “This franchisee’s actions are not only a breach of our franchise agreement, but they also violate the values of inclusion and community we stand for at Second Cup.”In a statement, Deborah Lipstadt, the US State Department’s antisemitism envoy and a Holocaust historian, condemned the “Final Solution” comments and added, “The antisemitic rhetoric that fueled the anti-NATO riots in Montreal sends a clear signal. Jew hatred incites violence, disrupts national security, and erodes democracy.”Elsewhere in Montreal, RIDM, a documentary film festival, canceled the screenings of an Israeli filmmaker’s movie due to pro-Palestinian protests. The film by Israeli-Canadian Danae Elon, “Rule of Stone,” takes a critical lens on Israeli policy. According to a description on the festival website, the film focuses on Jerusalem stone, which is used as the facade for buildings in the Israeli capital. It examines “the erasure of Palestinian history and the gradual exclusion of its people,” and “reveals the contrasts and often invisible violence of its buildings and architecture.”But the festival has announced that two screenings scheduled for later this week have been canceled. The statement said Elon had withdrawn the film following “consultations by RIDM with all concerned parties,” and that the festival would be changing its submission criteria.“Danae Elon is an Israeli-Canadian filmmaker whose films have been accompanied by RIDM, and we recognize her personal commitment to criticizing and questioning the state of Israel,” the festival’s statement said. “However, the film’s inclusion in our programming has disrupted our relationships with important partners, including members of the community actively supporting the Palestinian people.”The festival is the second Canadian cultural event this month to draw pro-Palestinian protest. Last week, the Giller Prize, a prestigious literary award, was given amid a boycott by authors protesting its sponsors’ ties to Israel. In Toronto over the weekend, a small pro-Palestinian protest featured, according to critics who shared photos on social media, a demonstrator dressed as Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the moments before an Israeli soldier killed him and someone holding a sign reading “Free flights to Amsterdam,” an apparent allusion to the attacks on Israeli soccer fans that took place there earlier this month. A Jewish political pundit was reportedly arrested after he refused police instructions to leave the scene.

Fake G20 Protest Weapons Cache Invented By Toronto Police-By Scout Magazine-Jun 30, 2010

When Toronto police chief Bill Blair proudly laid out his spread of seized weapons to defend his cops’ heavy-handed actions against citizens during the G20 summit, it was a singularly Rumsfeldian moment, a farce that only the easily swayed in the media would swallow. “There were no further acts of violence (after Saturday), and the weaponry that you see displayed before you today is just a small portion of the evidence that we gathered of what is most certainly a criminal conspiracy.” he told reporters. But there were several holes in his story, and many in the press (to their credit) didn’t bite. Several of the “weapons” he gushed over weren’t even involved in the G20 protests at all. For example (and this is my favourite), it turns out that the chain mail and blunted arrows (seriously!) that were center-piecing Blair’s haul were taken from a hapless live-action gaming geek on a train heading to some Tolkien nerdfest on the other side of town. From the Globe:In addition to the arrows – which Mr. Barrett made safe for live-action role playing by cutting off the pointy ends and attaching a bit of pool noodle covered in socks – police displayed his metal body armour, foam shields and several clubs made of plastic tubing covered with foam and fabric.Mr. Barrett said he was “appalled” at the placement of his chain-mail beneath a machete. He regularly takes public transit from his Whitby, Ont., home to Centennial Park to play the game, called Amtgard, while wearing the 85-pound armour and is worried people will think: “Oh my God, that’s one of the terrorists from G20.”Er, not people. Just cops. Other weapons seized (according to the Globe), included “gas masks, cans of spray paint, a replica gun, saws, pocket knives, a staple gun, a drill, a slingshot, chains and handcuffs”. Save for the replica gun (a stupid thing to bring to a protest), this is a pretty weak cache. And since when were spray paint and drills classified as weapons? Ah, but what about the crossbow and chainsaw set prominently on Blair’s display table, you ask? Totally unrelated to the G20 summit protests. It’s what most people would classify as a joke, wholly in poor taste.I’m not against cops (though there are some individual ones I’d like off the streets), and I’m certainly not a fan of the misled black clad anarchists who treat dissent as a lifestyle, but this dog and pony show was so ridiculous that it dented the public trust. How can Canadians have faith in the people charged with protecting them if they keep on making stuff up to cover their own asses? Nearly a thousand Torontonians were arrested/detained during the summit, many on phantom grounds. Some were just swept off the street while shopping and walking their dogs to be unceremoniously dumped in pens. A lot of questions are being raised in the wake of the weekend, which are being handled in a way British Columbians are very familiar with. The Toronto Star reports:Blair has set up an internal task force to review law enforcement actions during the summit. When finished, the report will be presented to the Toronto Police Services Board, where civilian representatives can look at the tactics and ask questions (my italics).Questions. Like who gets fired.

Iran’s Khamenei calls for death sentence for Israeli leaders, not arrest warrants-Ayatollah says International Criminal Court warrants are not enough, ‘criminal leaders’ Netanyahu and Gallant should face capital punishment-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 12:23 pm-NOV 25

The supreme leader of Iran, who backs the Hamas and Hezbollah terror groups fighting Israel in Gaza and Lebanon, said on Monday that death sentences should be issued for Israeli leaders, not arrest warrants.Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was commenting on a decision by the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants on Thursday for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense chief Yoav Gallant, and a Hamas leader, Mohammed Deif, that Israel says is dead.“They issued an arrest warrant, that’s not enough… Death sentence must be issued for these criminal leaders,” Khamenei said, referring to the Israeli leaders.Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah all avowedly seek the destruction of Israel. In their decision, the ICC judges said there were reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu and Gallant were criminally responsible for acts including murder, persecution, and starvation as a weapon of war as part of a “widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population of Gaza.”The decision was met with outrage in Israel, which called it shameful and absurd. Gaza residents expressed hope it would help end the violence and bring those responsible for alleged war crimes to justice.Israel, which is not a member of the ICC, has rejected the jurisdiction of the Hague-based court and denies war crimes in Gaza while accusing Hamas of using the civilian population as human shields. The United States, also not a member, likewise rejected the decision. Some Western member countries, including Britain and Italy, have said they would honor the arrest warrants if Netanyahu or Gallant arrived in their countries.Netanyahu fired Gallant earlier this month, claiming differences over managing the war.The warrant for Hamas leader Deif, also known as Ibrahim Al-Masri, lists charges of mass killings during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led massacre in Israel in which some 1,200 people were killed and 251 were seized as hostages. The warrant also includes charges of rape and the taking of hostages.Israel has said it killed Deif in an airstrike in July, but Hamas has neither confirmed nor denied this. The Hamas attack triggered the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s counteroffensive has killed more than 44,000 people, according to the Hamas health ministry. The figure cannot be independently verified and does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, of whom Israel says it has killed at least 17,000 in Gaza, in addition to about 1,000 inside Israel during the onslaught. Israel has said it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas including homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques. The day after the Hamas assault, Lebanon’s Hezbollah terror group began attacking across Israel’s northern border saying it was supporting Gaza. Near-daily rocket and drone attacks have continued for months, with 60,000 Israelis forced from their homes, drawing Israeli reprisals. Israel stepped up its offensive on Hezbollah in Lebanon in late September, launching extensive strikes and operations that took out most of the group’s leadership, including its longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah. The fighting has drawn Israel into direct conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah’s sponsor, Iran, which has twice fired barrages of hundreds of rockets and drones at Israel.Israel allegedly carried out a limited strike in response to the first attack, in April, which was largely thwarted by air defense in cooperation with a US-led coalition of regional forces. Then on October 1, Tehran launched some 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1, sending most of the population rushing to bomb shelters and safe rooms. The assault on Israel caused relatively minor damage to military bases and some residential areas and killed a Palestinian man in the West Bank.Israel responded with wide-ranging strikes on Iran’s military sites on October 26. Iran has vowed to retaliate. A senior adviser to Khamenei said Monday that Iran was preparing to “respond” to Israel, without giving details.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said it provided medical treatment to a 60-year-old man in northern Israel who suffered a shrapnel wound to the head following a rocket barrage fired from Lebanon at Nahariya.Sirens were activated in Nahariya and surrounding areas after a 12-hour lull, which in turn was preceded by relentless fire as Hezbollah launched some 250 rockets at northern and central Israel the day before. The IDF said that the Israeli Air Force intercepted a drone that crossed into Israel from Lebanon. Sirens were activated in communities close to the Lebanon border due to fear of falling shrapnel as a result of the interception.Footage of the interception was published alongside the statement.North of the border, Lebanese media reported renewed Israeli airstrikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The reports come after the IDF issued an evacuation warning for civilians in the vicinity of three buildings it said would be targeted in strikes on Hezbollah assets. Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, published maps alongside the announcement on X, which called on civilians to distance themselves at least 500 meters from the sites. The official National News Agency reported “two consecutive strikes in the vicinity of the Haret Hreik area” in the southern Dahieh suburbs of the capital as AFPTV images showed heavy smoke rising from two locations. The IDF also called on Lebanese civilians in the southern village of Halta to evacuate north of the Awali River, ahead of pending IDF operations against Hezbollah forces and infrastructure in the area.Adraee warned on X that they must “evacuate without delay” and reiterated that they must head north, as “any movement toward the south could pose a danger to your life.”He added that the IDF will inform them when it is safe for them to return home.In an update, the IDF said that troops from the 91st Division found many weapons and destroyed a number of loaded rocket launchers in southern Lebanon that were ready to fire at the Galilee area.Over the past day, the air force attacked dozens of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon including command centers, weapons storage sites, and rocket launchers. Some of the launchers that were used for Sunday’s attacks on Haifa Bay and the Sharon region, the IDF said.

Two Palestinians shot dead in clash with IDF in West Bank town of Ya’bad-Palestinian reports say one of the dead was a teenager; military says they threw explosives at soldiers, who opened fire-By ToI Staff Today, 10:06 am-NOV 25,24

Two Palestinians, one of them a teenager, were shot dead by Israeli forces in the northern West Bank town of Ya’bad on Sunday night, the Palestinian Authority reported. The Israel Defense Forces said the pair had attacked soldiers with explosives. The PA health ministry identified them as Mohammad Rabi’ Jamal Hamarsheh, 13, and Ahmad Mahmoud Zaid, 20, though the WAFA news agency reported that Hamarsheh was 16.Clashes erupted when the IDF entered Ya’bad, west of Jenin. According to eyewitnesses and medics, both Palestinians were shot multiple times in the upper body. The IDF said soldiers spotted that the pair were carrying explosives, which they hurled at security forces, the Ynet outlet reported. Soldiers then opened fire, killing Hamarsheh and Zaid. The incident came after last week the IDF carried out a two-day operation against terror activities in the Jenin area during which it said soldiers killed nine Palestinian gunmen.Several suspects were arrested and bomb-making labs were destroyed, the IDF said at the time.Since October 7, 2023, when the Hamas terror group attacked Israel, starting the ongoing war in Gaza, troops have arrested some 5,250 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 2,050 affiliated with Hamas.According to the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry, more than 718 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time. The IDF says the vast majority of them were gunmen killed in exchanges of fire, rioters who clashed with troops, or terrorists killed while carrying out attacks.During the same period, 41 people, including Israeli security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Another six members of the security forces were killed in clashes with terror operatives in the West Bank.

Pressed into service by war, national drone delivery project moves closer to takeoff-Created to build system tracking and managing UAVs that one day may fill Israel’s skies, state-run Drone Initiative shifts on the fly to keep drones out of IDF’s way after Oct. 7-By Zev Stub Today, 6:20 am-NOV 25,24

As Israel’s skies filled with military hardware following the outbreak of war, the country put strict restrictions on civilian air traffic, including drones. In order to allow certain types of civilian drones to continue flying, the Civil Aviation Authority tasked a government project developing an experimental drone delivery network with registering and tracking UAVs to keep them out of the Israel Defense Force’s way.The Israel National Drone Initiative, or INDI, was launched in 2019 to try to create a central network that could manage air traffic for multitudes of autonomous drones taking flight around the country at any given time. The ambitious experiment, it was hoped, could eventually usher in a new world, in which drones zip safely through the skies, delivering everything from emergency medical supplies and even personnel to takeout food and online purchases. But when the war began a year ago, the project was forced to change direction and start registering active drones on a live network.“It was an assignment that brought our experiments to the real world very quickly,” said Daniella Partem, who leads INDI as head of the Israel Innovation Authority’s Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. “It forced us to take capabilities that we had been developing gradually and create a working mechanism in a very short time frame.”The potential commercial uses of a centralized drone network are staggering, and span virtually every field, Partem noted. Replacing current delivery options with autonomous drones could cut transportation times and costs, reduce congestion on roads, and provide access to remote or hard-to-reach areas. Mainstreaming the use of drones could help create new industries that are not even feasible now, she said. But building an effective drone delivery network is not a simple endeavor. Thus far, INDI and the 11 different drone technology companies partnered with the project have run more than 24,000 test flights in experiments of increasing difficulty to learn how a drone delivery network could be feasible. Some of the pilot runs have helped fuel the public’s imagination with accomplishments that sound like science fiction: delivering sushi and beer by drone in Tel Aviv, or transporting people in pilotless air taxis to hospitals in Jerusalem. But these headline-grabbing feats are just a small part of the bigger picture. Developing a national network means solving for safety, privacy, logistics, regulatory requirements, commercial viability, and a host of granular details that could eventually affect the implementation of a real-world drone delivery system. One of the biggest challenges is coordinating between different parties, Partem explained, comparing the network model to that of an airport’s traffic control center.Instead of offering a closed system in which one technology provider manages everything, Israel’s national drone network would allow independent companies to register on the system and deploy their own drone fleets, with everything connected and coordinated through a central clearinghouse. That approach encourages innovation and competition in the market, promoting a vibrant and sustainable drone ecosystem, Partem noted. Some of what INDI is developing is generally analogous to what the Civil Aviation Authority does with manned aircraft, directing traffic and keeping commercial planes out of the army’s way. But the sheer number of drones, coupled with the fact that they can take off and land practically anywhere and be piloted by practically anyone, not to mention Israel’s small size and vast array of military sites, makes the task extremely complex. The difficulty in balancing INDI’s civilian needs with those of the military came into focus as soon as the war began on October 7, Partem said.“One of the major challenges of creating a civilian drone infrastructure is perfecting a model for how the defense world and the civilian world can live together in the skies without interfering with each other,” Partem said. “Once the war started, it put this tension on steroids.”When fighting began, Israel initially banned most drone traffic, but authorized some UAVs to continue flying. The Civil Aviation Authority asked INDI to provide a comprehensive picture of where civilian drones still authorized to fly were located, and to assist them in making sure they fly in approved areas and altitudes.Using electronic remote identification technologies developed by INDI, authorities wanted to register and track drones to ensure their identities and keep them from interfering with army business. Doing so required INDI to quickly put many of the theoretical concepts it was developing into action.“We needed to develop a system to quickly register new drones on the network and coordinate them with the army network. This required a combination of technology, regulation, and the ability to act rapidly,” Partem said. “This was only possible because we had already developed the infrastructure and created a relationship of cooperation and trust with the regulator.”INDI, which was created as a collaboration between the Innovation Authority, the Transportation Ministry, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Smart Transportation Authority, returned to its regular operations the following spring when the regulator reopened the skies to the public.“But the war taught us a lot of lessons about how to make our ecosystem more resilient and adaptive to new scenarios,” Partem said.Pie in the sky-INDI’s main purpose remains the creation of a commercial drone network. One of the early lessons that the team learned was that economies of scale are critical to making drone deliveries financially viable.During the first phase of testing in 2021, as a safety precaution, INDI was only allowed to test deliveries using small drones with payloads of up to 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds). One of its first operations, the delivery of a Pizza Hut pizza to a nearby village, helped illustrate how un-cost-effective the method could be if not managed properly.“The expense for a company to set up its own delivery network and deploy a fleet of drones means that, in the early stages, every drone flight will cost hundreds of shekels,” Partem noted. “That doesn’t work if all you are doing is delivering take-out food.”INDI also understood that door-to-door delivery is technically unfeasible, due to the safety and privacy problems of having drones buzzing around apartment buildings. In the pizza trial and other delivery demonstrations, deliveries are made to designated drop spots, where they are picked up by a messenger and brought to their destination in person. The second phase of testing, which began in 2023 with a NIS 60 million investment from both government and private organizations, set more ambitious goals, including the ability to carry heavier loads, including people. That summer, it tested air taxis –essentially flying cars without a driver — to transport passengers and heavy cargo between hospitals in urban areas like Jerusalem.“Most likely, public sector bodies like hospitals and police offices will be the first to adopt the new technologies,” Partem said. She noted that during the past year, a number of Israeli municipalities have begun using new autonomous “drones in a box” that can deploy on their own and monitor large areas from above.“But ultimately,” she said, “everything has to make sense for business.”Other countries are also building out or backing the creation of infrastructure for drone networks, including the United States, Switzerland, Australia, India, and Brazil. However, Israel is generally recognized as the leader in the field, noted Shlomi Kofman, vice president and head of the Israel Innovation Authority’s International Collaborations Division.“The procedures and templates for legislation that we are developing are being studied and copied around the world,” he said. The second phase of testing is slated to end in April 2025, and it is not yet clear how the program will continue after that point.“The state budget was just approved last week, and we don’t know where we stand with that,” Kofman said. “But we’re confident that we will keep working to create groundbreaking change for Israel and the whole world.”In the meantime, INDI is still engaged in a learning process, testing theses and making mistakes in the hopes of eventually getting the formula right.“In each phase, we learn about new challenges, and then we set out to find the solution to each challenge,” Partem said. “How many years have people spent developing autonomous cars? Everything takes longer than you expect. There are a lot of open questions, but we’re here to try to solve them.”

United Arab Emirates arrests three suspects in murder of Chabad rabbi Zvi Kogan-Iran rejects allegations it was involved in the killing; US condemns ‘horrific crime against those who stand for peace’; body of Israeli-Moldovan set to be flown to Israel for burial
By Lazar Berman-and Agencies 24 November 2024, 11:22 pm

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have arrested three people involved in the killing of Israeli-Moldovan Rabbi Zvi Kogan in the Gulf country, the Emirati Interior Ministry said on Sunday.A ministry statement did not give further details on the identity of suspects or their role in the killing, but said the ministry would use “all legal powers to respond decisively and without leniency to any actions or attempts that threaten societal stability.”Kogan, 28, who worked in the UAE for the Orthodox Jewish group Chabad, which seeks to support Jewish life for thousands of Jewish visitors and residents in the Gulf Arab state, vanished in Dubai, where he ran a kosher grocery store, on Thursday. His body was found in the Emirati city of Al Ain, which borders Oman, around 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Abu Dhabi, Israeli authorities announced early Sunday. The Ynet news site reported that Kogan’s car was found abandoned in Al Ain. It added, without citing sources, that there were signs of a struggle in the vehicle. Officials suspect a number of Uzbek citizens recruited by Iran assaulted the rabbi and later fled to Turkey, the report said.Israel has called the murder an antisemitic terror attack. The UAE statement called Kogan “the Moldovan citizen,” making no mention of his dual Israeli nationality or that he was Jewish. The UAE’s Ambassador to the US, Yousef Al Otaiba, said in statement posted on X that the US “mourns for Rabbi Zvi Kogan. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and community over his senseless death.” His murder “was more than a crime in the UAE – it was a crime against the UAE. It was an attack on our homeland, on our values and on our vision.”An Israeli foreign ministry official told Reuters that Kogan’s body would hopefully be repatriated to Israel on Monday. After Kogan’s family filed a report about his disappearance, the UAE statement said, an investigation was initiated, leading to arrests “in record time.” The full findings of the investigation would be announced upon its completion, it said.“The United Arab Emirates, with all its institutions, will spare no effort to prevent any attack on its citizens, residents, and visitors,” said the statement, adding that “all security agencies work around the clock to protect the stability of society and ensure the sustainability of the highest levels of security and safety that have been established since the founding of the state.”Kogan had entered the UAE on his Moldovan passport and was a resident there, said the UAE statement, which was published by the state news agency.President Isaac Herzog condemned the killing and thanked Emirati authorities for “their swift action.” He said he trusted they “will work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice.”The White House late Sunday branded the murder a “horrific crime against all those who stand for peace, tolerance and coexistence.”“It was an assault as well on UAE and its rejection of violent extremism across the board,” said National Security spokesperson Sean Savett in a statement. He said the US was in contact with Emirati and Israeli authorities, offering its support. The spokesperson also praised the UAE for quickly arresting several suspects and called for those responsible to be held “fully accountable.”In a message on X earlier Sunday, the Chabad-Lubavitch movement wrote that Kogan had been “murdered by terrorists.”“We trust that the UAE will work with the countries in the region to bring the perpetrators to justice, and hold all those involved accountable for this act of sheer evil,” Chabad said, and urged every country where its emissaries serve “to ensure that terror finds no haven within its borders.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office called the killing a “heinous antisemitic terrorist act,” adding that Israel would do everything it could to bring those responsible to justice.Tehran said it “categorically rejects the allegations of Iran’s involvement in the murder of this individual,” Iran’s embassy in Abu Dhabi said in a statement to Reuters on Sunday. In Abu Dhabi since 2020-Kogan was a dual Israeli-Moldovan citizen, who reportedly served in the Israel Defense Forces’ Givati Brigade. He had been part of the Abu Dhabi Chabad chapter since Israel normalized ties with the UAE in late 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords.According to Chabad, Kogan worked to expand Jewish life in the UAE alongside Chief Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Duchman, including ensuring the wide availability of kosher food and opening the first Jewish education center in the country. The Rimon Market, a Kosher grocery store that Kogan managed on Dubai’s busy Al Wasl Road, was shut Sunday. As the wars have roiled the region, the store has been the target of online protests by pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel protesters. Mezuzahs on the front and back doors of the market appeared to have been ripped off.Kogan’s wife Rivky joined him at the posting after their wedding in 2022. She is the niece of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, who was murdered along with his wife in a terror attack at the Nariman Chabad House in Mumbai in 2008.According to Ynet, Kogan participated in the first-ever Holocaust remembrance day ceremony in the Gulf state in 2021, and led the Yizkor prayer during the event.Travel warning-Israeli authorities reissued their recommendation against all non-essential travel to the UAE and said visitors now there should minimize movement, remain in secure areas, and avoid visiting places associated with Israel and Jewish populations.Israelis have flocked to Dubai for commerce and tourism since the Emirates and Israel forged diplomatic ties under a 2020 US-brokered agreement, dubbed the Abraham Accords. The UAE has a burgeoning Jewish community, with synagogues and businesses catering to kosher diners. It has maintained the relationship forged through the Abraham Accords during the 13-month Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. However, the public presence of Israelis and Jews in the UAE has appeared to recede since the devastating Hamas cross-border attack on Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and triggered the ongoing Gaza conflict, which has sparked protests worldwide.Jewish community members in the UAE told Reuters that informal synagogues in Dubai were closed after the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel over security concerns, with Jews instead gathering to pray at home. The one government-approved synagogue in the UAE remains open in Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital. There are no official synagogues in Dubai, the UAE’s biggest city and commercial hub. There are no official statistics on the number of Jews or Israelis living in the country, but estimates from Jewish groups suggest the community numbers in the several thousand.
