PM, defense minister reportedly not consulted in advance-Israel kills 3 sons of Hamas chief Haniyeh in Gaza strike, says they were terrorists-IDF says relatives were ‘en route to carry out terror activity’; 4 grandchildren also killed; Qatar-based terror chief tells Al Jazeera he thanks God ‘for honor of their martyrdom’By Emanuel Fabian,Gianluca Pacchiani-and Agencies 10 April 2024, 8:04 pm
Israel on Wednesday killed three sons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in a strike in the northern Gaza Strip, saying they were operatives in the terror group. Four of Haniyeh’s grandchildren, three girls and a boy, were also killed in the attack, Hamas said. The three sons — Hazem, Amir and Mohammad — were killed after the car they were driving in was struck in Gaza City’s Shati camp, Hamas said. The deaths were first reported by Al Jazeera and then confirmed by Haniyeh himself and Hamas. The IDF and Shin Bet later confirmed killing the three men, saying they were operatives in the terror group. According to the IDF and Shin Bet, Amir Haniyeh was a squad commander in the Hamas military wing, while Hazem and Mohammad Haniyeh were lower-ranking operatives, also in the military wing. The IDF said that the trio were “en route to carry out terror activity in the area of central Gaza” when they were struck.Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas who is largely based in Qatar, confirmed their deaths in comments to Al Jazeera, telling the news outlet that he “thank[s] God for bestowing upon us the honor of their martyrdom.”In a phone interview broadcast on the TV network, the terror leader vowed that the group will not surrender, and that such actions will not make it change its goals and its demands in hostage release talks.“Their pure blood is for the liberation of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa, and we will continue to march on our road, and will not hesitate and will not falter,” Haniyeh said. “With their blood, we bring about hope, a future and freedom for our people and our cause.”“Our demands are clear and specific and we will not make concessions on them. The enemy will be delusional if it thinks that targeting my sons, at the climax of the negotiations and before the movement sends its response, will push Hamas to change its position,” he told the TV station, adding that “the blood of my sons is not dearer than the blood of our people.”According to Hebrew media reports, the strike on Haniyeh’s three sons was approved by a colonel in the IDF’s Southern Command and was not discussed in the war cabinet ahead of time, despite the sensitive timing as Israel is still awaiting an official Hamas response to the latest hostage deal offer. An Israeli official told The Times of Israel that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant were not informed in advance of the strike. A source quoted by the Kan public broadcaster warned the strike could jeopardize the ongoing talks. The broadcaster also said the IDF alleged one of Haniyeh’s sons was involved in holding hostages, but did not specify which.A video circulating online purports to show the moment Haniyeh is told of his sons’ deaths while visiting a hospital in Qatar. He calmly praises God and then suggests the tour continue on to the next room. It is not clear whether the video was genuine or staged. The moment Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh is told Israel assаssinаtеd his children and grandchildren pic.twitter.com/gamfNnHV2o— What the media hides. (@narrative_hole) April 10, 2024-Haniyeh, a father of 13, told Al Jazeera that nearly 60 members of his family had been “martyred” in the war, and that he has paid the same price as the rest of the Palestinian people. His eldest son confirmed in a Facebook post that his three brothers were killed. “Thanks to God who honored us by the martyrdom of my brothers, Hazem, Amir and Mohammad and their children,” wrote Abdel-Salam Haniyeh. An Al Jazeera report claimed that the three men were struck by a missile launched from a drone as they were traveling in a car on their way to congratulate relatives and acquaintances on the occasion of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which began Tuesday evening.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered condolences in a phone call to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh after the death of his three sons in Gaza, his office said. Erdogan told Haniyeh, “Israel will definitely be held accountable before the law for the crimes against humanity it committed,” the presidency said in a statement on social media.Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi also sent condolences to Haniyeh, the official state-run news agency IRNA reported. Raisi “expressed deep sorrow” over his sons’ deaths, the report said. Hamas said that Haniyeh also received messages of condolence from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as well as Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.Appointed to head the terror group in 2017, Haniyeh has moved between Turkey and Qatar’s capital Doha, and has emerged as the most prominent negotiator in the latest ongoing round of talks for a truce and hostage release deal. Israel sent a delegation to talks in Cairo this week, while Hamas representatives have also been in the Egyptian capital for negotiations. While some officials have expressed optimism that a deal could be reached after months of stalled talks, so far Hamas appears to be sticking to its demand that the war end before it agrees to release any of the hostages the terror group kidnapped from Israel on October 7 who are still being held in the Strip. Israel has outright rejected such a demand.Thousands of Hamas terrorists poured across the border with Israel in a mass assault on October 7, killing close to 1,200 people and kidnapping 253 to Gaza. During a weeklong truce in late November, 105 of the hostages were released, four were freed earlier and three have been rescued alive by troops, while the bodies of 12 hostages have been recovered. The IDF believes that 129 of those kidnapped remain in the Strip, including at least 34 bodies.During Israel’s ensuing war against Hamas in Gaza, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 33,000 people have been killed in the fighting, an unverified figure that includes some 13,000 Hamas gunmen Israel says it has killed in battle. The IDF says it killed 1,000 Hamas and other terrorists inside Israel on and immediately after October 7. Since the IDF ground invasion began, 260 IDF soldiers have been killed in the fighting.Last week, Haniyeh said that the terror group was not prepared to budge on any of the conditions it had previously laid out, declaring in a televised speech that “we are committed to our demands: the permanent ceasefire, comprehensive and complete withdrawal of the enemy out of the Gaza Strip, the return of all displaced people to their homes, allowing all aid needed for our people in Gaza, rebuilding the Strip, lifting the blockade and achieving an honorable prisoner exchange deal.”Earlier this month, police in Israel arrested Haniyeh’s sister, an Israeli citizen living in Tel Sheva. Three of the Hamas leader’s sisters live in the southern town and were married to Arab Israelis. Two are now widowed and have fallen foul of Israeli authorities in the past by making illegal trips into Gaza in 2013 via Egypt. They were both given eight-month suspended sentences for the visits in 2015. Later that year, Israel denied Haniyeh’s request that his sisters be permitted to attend his son’s wedding in Gaza.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
After ISIS attack in Moscow, FBI chief warns similar plans may be brewing in US-Christopher Wray set to tell Congress that never in his career have threats to public safety and national security been so significant-By Andrew Goudsward Today, 3:13 pm-APR 11,24
WASHINGTON, DC (Reuters) — The FBI is concerned about the possibility of an organized attack in the United States similar to the one that killed scores of people at a Russian concert hall last month, the bureau’s director is set to tell a House of Representatives panel on Thursday.“Looking back over my career in law enforcement, I’d be hard-pressed to think of a time where so many threats to our public safety and national security were so elevated all at once,” Christopher Wray is planning to tell lawmakers during a budget hearing. “But that is the case as I sit here today.”The March 22 attack on a concert hall in suburban Moscow killed at least 144 people, the deadliest in Russia in 20 years. A branch of the Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility, but Russian President Vladimir Putin, without citing evidence, has sought to blame Ukraine.US officials have been worried about the possibility of an attack carried out by an individual or small group inspired by the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. But the FBI is growing concerned about a more coordinated attack following the concert massacre in Russia, Wray will say during testimony.Of increasing concern “is the potential for a coordinated attack here in the homeland, akin to the ISIS-K attack we saw at the Russia Concert Hall a couple weeks ago,” he will say.Wray also plans to press lawmakers to renew a US surveillance program set to expire this month, calling it an indispensable tool against US adversaries. A modest overhaul of that program was blocked in the House on Wednesday amid concerns from members of both parties that it did not go far enough in curbing the government’s surveillance powers.“It’s critical in securing our nation, and we’re in crunch time,” Wray plans to tell lawmakers.
IDF launches ‘targeted operation’ in central Gaza’s Nuseirat after heavy bombardment-Military: Strikes on dozens of targets based on intelligence of ‘terror infrastructure’ in area largely passed over by soldiers until now; troops also find several rocket launchers By Emanuel Fabian Today, 2:32 pm-APR 11
The IDF said Thursday it launched a “targeted operation” against Hamas in the central Gaza Strip overnight, pushing into an area on the outskirts of the Nuseirat refugee camp largely left untouched by troops until now.Heavy airstrikes and artillery shelling pounded parts of the camp before troops moved into the area, which sits adjacent to the lone corridor where Israeli soldiers remain in Gaza.Palestinians said a strike on a residential building killed at least five people, and other apartment towers were also struck. The Israel Defense Forces said the air force and artillery troops carried out strikes against dozens of Hamas targets, including tunnel infrastructure. The navy also carried out artillery strikes near the coast to support ground troops, the IDF said. The operation followed intelligence indicating “the presence of terror infrastructure and many terrorists in the area,” the army said.Soldiers engaged with armed fighters during the night, including a gunman who emerged from a tunnel and was hit with an airstrike, according to the IDF. Troops also located several rocket launchers in the area.Hamas-linked media reported heavy fighting in the area was continuing Thursday. There were also reports of airstrikes in other parts of the Strip, particularly the south, with the Palestinian Maan News Agency reporting that 122 people were killed in Gaza over the previous 24 hours.Israel has not previously operated on the ground in Nuseirat, though last month Hamas’s third-in-command, Marwan Issa, was killed in an airstrike in the area. The operation occurred as Israel has appeared to dial back the use of ground troops and shift from a wide-scale offensive to pinpoint operations. This was in line with US demands for changes to the way fighting is taking place amid international concern over the deaths of civilians in the Strip and claims of near-famine conditions.Just one brigade — comprising several thousand troops — remains in the Strip, where it is holding an east-west corridor that essentially splits the enclave into two.At the height of the IDF’s offensive against Hamas, it had multiple divisions — with roughly 30,000-40,000 troops — in the Strip.Israeli officials have said that 18 of Hamas’s 24 original battalions in the Gaza Strip have been dismantled, meaning they do not function as an organized military unit, although smaller cells still exist.Four Hamas battalions remain virtually untouched in southern Gaza’s Rafah, and another two are in the central part of the Strip, according to Israeli assessments.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said he approved the military’s plans for an operation in Rafah, although he has not given the green light to carry them out.The planned Rafah offensive has caused intense consternation in the international community, including in the US and Egypt, due to the southern Gaza City now hosting more than a million Palestinians displaced from elsewhere in the Strip. Israel has said it is making plans to evacuate and protect civilians from Rafah as part of its offensive plans. The war erupted when thousands of Hamas terrorists poured across the border with Israel in a mass assault on October 7 during which they killed almost 1.200 people and abducted 253.Israel responded with a military offensive to destroy Hamas and free the hostages, half of whom remain in captivity in Gaza. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 33,000 people have been killed in the fighting, an unverified figure that includes some 13,000 Hamas gunmen Israel says it has killed in battle. The IDF says it killed 1,000 Hamas and other terrorists inside Israel on and immediately after October 7.
'Anyone who hits us, we hit them' Netanyahu hints at retaliation if Iran attacks, as CENTCOM chief lands in Israel-Premier tells F-15 pilots military is ‘ready to fulfill our responsibilities to Israel’s security, in defense and attack’; Kurilla to meet Gallant, senior IDF officials-By ToI Staff and Agencies Today, 3:24 pm-APR 11,24
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday appeared to reiterate his warning to Iran that Israel would retaliate if attacked, as the head of US Central Command (CENTCOM) Gen. Michael Kurilla arrived in Israel reportedly to discuss what US intelligence officials have described as an “imminent” threat from Tehran.“We are in challenging times. We are in the midst of a war in Gaza that is continuing with full force. In addition, we are continuing with ceaseless efforts to return our hostages, but we are also preparing for challenges from other fronts,” Netanyahu told pilots as he visited an F-15 base.Iran has repeatedly vowed to retaliate for an alleged Israeli strike last week on a consular building in its Damascus embassy complex, which killed two generals among several Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officers. That incident came amid spiraling violence on Israel’s northern border due to near-daily attacks by the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group since October 8.“We set a simple principle: Anyone who hits us, we hit them,” Netanyahu said in apparent reference to Iranian threats to carry out strikes against Israel. “We are ready to fulfill our responsibilities to Israel’s security, in defense and attack.”“I, and the whole of Israel, trust you,” he said to the F-15 pilots, wishing them “much success.”Israel’s F-15 fleet is the Air Force’s primary weapon for long-range strikes. Also Thursday, CENTCOM chief Kurilla was expected to meet with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and senior IDF officials. The Axios website, which first reported on Kurilla’s expected visit Wednesday, said that US and Israeli officials across various agencies have been in contact over the last few days as the countries prepare for a possible Iranian response to the April 1 strike.A senior Israeli official told Axios that Israel has asked the US to help limit the Iranian response by sending public and private warnings to Iran and also by using its military presence in the area as a diplomatic lever.Meanwhile, Army Radio reported Thursday that the Israeli Air Force has recently practiced carrying out long-range strikes during exercises in Cypriot airspace and in coordination with the local military. The exercise was intended to practice for a strike on Iran, the report said, without citing sources. It marked a return by the IAF to preparing for a confrontation with Iran after being tied up with operations amid the ongoing war with in the Gaza Strip, sparked by Hamas’s October 7 massacre, and the resulting skirmishes on the northern border.A senior IDF official was quoted as saying that the military “knows how and is ready to act in any arena while maintaining independent abilities to act on our own. We don’t rely on anyone.”The reports came as US President Joe Biden reiterated America’s commitment to Israeli security in the face of threats from Iran.Speaking at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in the White House’s Rose Garden, Biden told reporters Wednesday that “we also addressed the Iranian threat, as they threaten to launch a significant attack on Israel.”“As I told Prime Minister Netanyahu, our commitment to Israel’s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad,” said Biden. “Let me say it again, ironclad. We’re going to do all we can to protect Israel’s security.”The Bloomberg news agency reported Wednesday the US believes a major Iranian attack on Israel is imminent and could involve high-precision missiles and drones targeting military and government sites in Israel.Earlier Wednesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei told a crowd in Tehran that “the evil regime made a mistake and must be punished, and it shall be,” referring to the attack in Damascus. One of those killed was Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Quds Force for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps’ foreign arm, who led its operations in Syria and was said to be a member of a top decision-making panel in Hezbollah. A Hezbollah member was also killed.Following Khamenei’s speech, Gallant and Foreign Minister Israel Katz both threatened that if Iran launched an attack from its own soil then Israel would strike back inside Iran. However, unnamed US intelligence sources told CNN in a Monday report that Iran is unlikely to attack Israel directly out of fear of American and Israeli reprisal, and will instead urge its various proxies in the region to launch attacks on its behalf in the coming days.Iran-backed terror groups have entered the fray across the region amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Hamas, including rocket fire from Lebanon by Hezbollah and months of Yemen-based Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.War erupted in Gaza on October 7 when Hamas led a devastating cross-border attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people, amid numerous atrocities. Israel responded with a military campaign to destroy Hamas and free the 253 hostages who were abducted during the attack and taken to Gaza, some half of whom remain in captivity.Meanwhile, CENTCOM said Thursday that its forces had successfully engaged three unmanned aerial vehicles launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen over the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea.There were no injuries or damage reported by US, coalition, or commercial ships, the statement added.US forces also destroyed eight UAVs in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, the statement said.
With Knesset in wartime recess, attendance becomes a political weapon-Despite mutual recriminations over attendance, MK Evgeny Sova says ‘in practice there isn’t that much of a recess,’ noting daily committee meetings over legislative break-By Sam Sokol-10 April 2024, 7:25 pm
Amid mass protests and fierce political opposition, the Knesset went on recess on Sunday, ostensibly giving lawmakers six weeks of time off in the middle of both a two-front shooting war and a burgeoning coalition crisis. But while the legislature is technically no longer in session, many committees are still holding hearings. Now the identity of those present or absent from the building has become a tool for point-scoring between members of the coalition and opposition.Speaking at the end of the winter session last Thursday, several lawmakers critical of the decision to halt legislative activity amid the war told The Times of Israel that they intended to remain present over the break.“We’re not going on vacation,” declared MK Pnina Tamano-Shata, chair of the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality. “I already have hearings next week.”While Yisrael Beytenu MK Evgeny Sova said it was unfortunate that the parliament’s House Committee voted to approve the break, “in practice, there isn’t that much of a recess because next week we have at least three days or parliamentary work in the Knesset.”The main issue with the recess is that there are no plenum deliberations or votes, and thus no passing of legislation, but otherwise “I’m coming in as normal and continuing to work,” Sova pledged.Plenum discussions and voting can still be held during the recess on urgent matters in specially called sessions.Arguing that it was “neither reasonable nor logical” for lawmakers to take time off while 134 Israelis are held hostage in Gaza and Hezbollah rockets fall on the north, hawkish opposition politician Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu party lobbied hard to allow the lawmakers to continue their normal legislative and oversight activities during the recess, which runs from April 7 to May 19.Many members of the public agreed, with tens of thousands gathering in front of the Knesset last week to demand that as long as Israel’s hostages and soldiers do not receive a recess, neither should lawmakers.Asked how it plans on operating during the recess, a Yisrael Beytenu spokesman stated that his party had not given up on holding plenum sessions, stating that it was currently gathering MKs’ signatures in order to force “an urgent discussion in the Knesset plenum on the issue of Israel’s security policy in the face of Iranian threats.”Such rhetoric has drawn scorn from some members of the coalition, with MK Simcha Rothman, head of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, dismissing talk of working through the break as disingenuous.“There are those who put up signs that they don’t have a break, and there are those who really don’t have a break,” Rothman tweeted, arguing that members of his hard-right Religious Zionism party were among the “most active” in the Knesset.Rothman was referencing a series of tweets by Yesh Atid MKs in which they posted photos of signs on their office doors declaring that they would work through the break.“During a war, when fighters have no rest, we will also be here,” wrote MK Ron Katz in a tweet typical of the party’s messaging. Also critical of Yesh Atid’s stance was Likud MK Keti Shitrit — one of the lowest-ranking MKs in terms of attendance — who shot a video of herself knocking on Yesh Atid lawmakers’ doors, presumably to show that they were not present.According to the resolution passed by the Knesset House Committee last month, Knesset committees will be allowed to meet four times each during the recess, while the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee will have no limitations placed on its activities.Over the past four days, lawmakers have attended multiple hearings held by several different committees, including a preliminary discussion to prepare for the first reading of a bill to ban the UN agency UNRWA from operating on Israeli territory.Yesh Atid, whose chairman Yair Lapid left on a trip to Washington over the weekend, bragged about its MKs’ attendance in an English-language Twitter thread on Thursday.“Knesset Recess? Maybe for the coalition. But not for Yesh Atid,” it stated, noting that several of its lawmakers had attended sessions of the Knesset Committee on the Status of Women and the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee as well as engaging in other work-related activities. ???????? Knesset Recess? Maybe for the coalition. But not for Yesh Atid.MKs @Meravbenari @simondav14 @YSegalovitz @Vladim irBeliak @Yasminsfridman @MattiSarfatti and @MosheTurpaz took part in a hearing of the Knesset Committee on the Status of Women. pic.twitter.com/S9qX8PZxxU— Yesh Atid English ???? (@YeshAtidEnglish) April 10, 2024-However, regardless of political orientation, Knesset attendance has plummeted since the beginning of the recess, with only 21 lawmakers physically present in the building on Wednesday afternoon — seven of them from the opposition and 14 from the coalition — giving each side ammunition to attack the other.
Rocket fired at Kiryat Shmona as UN peacekeepers on Lebanon border fear escalation-IDF says it intercepted missile heading for northern border town; Lebanese man accused of funneling Iranian cash to Hamas found dead; UNIFIL urges diplomatic solution-By Emanuel Fabian and Agencies 10 April 2024, 4:48 pm
The Israel Defense Forces said Wednesday it had intercepted a rocket fired from Lebanon at the northern border city of Kiryat Shmona, as United Nations peacekeepers stationed along border warned that the ongoing violence between Israel and terror group Hezbollah could dangerously escalate. The incoming missile was shot down by the Iron Dome air defense system, the IDF said.Sirens sounded in Kiryat Shmona and nearby communities, though there were no reports of damage or injuries. The head of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon expressed worries that hostilities on the border with Israel will continue to spiral out of control, calling for a diplomatic solution to the conflict.“The danger of escalation is real,” Aroldo Lazaro said in a statement posted by UNIFIL. “There is no military solution to the current confrontation and violence; a political and diplomatic solution is the only way forward.”The statement did not mention Hezbollah’s violations of UN Resolution 1701, which requires that the group’s armed wing not be allowed to operate in southern Lebanon.Israel has threatened to go to war to force the Iran-backed terror group away from the border if it does not retreat in line with that resolution and continues to threaten northern communities, from where some 70,000 people were evacuated to avoid the fighting.Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a daily basis with rockets, drones, anti-tank missiles, and other means, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there. Hezbollah is an Iranian proxy in Lebanon and Palestinian terror groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad are backed by Iran. The IDF has regularly responded with strikes in Lebanon. The war in Gaza erupted with Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw some 3,000 terrorists burst across the border into southern Israel by land, air, and sea, killing some 1,200 people and seizing 253 hostages.Vowing to destroy Hamas, Israel launched a wide-scale military campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas and free the hostages, of whom 129 remain in captivity, some no longer alive. As the clashes in the north continued, a Lebanese man under US sanctions for allegedly funneling money from Iran to Hamas was killed just outside Beirut, a security source told AFP.The body of Mohammad Sarur was found Tuesday in a villa in the mountain town of Beit Mery, the source said, requesting anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media. He had been struck by more than five bullets and was found in possession of an undisclosed sum of money that the killers did not touch, the source added. #BRE AKING: Mohammad Sarur, who was sanctioned by the U.S. government in 2019 for transferring tens of millions of dollars from #IRGCterrorists to #Hamas' Izz-Al-Din Al-Qassam Brigades, was found dead in Beit Mery today. Another 35 have been fired from Syria, according to the IDF.Around 4,700 Hezbollah positions have been hit by the IDF, according to the military. So far, the skirmishes on the border have resulted in eight civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 10 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.Hezbollah has named 273 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. In Lebanon, another 53 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and at least 60 civilians, three of whom were journalists, have been killed. Tensions in the region have been high since an alleged Israeli strike in Damascus last week killed seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members, among them a senior Quds Force commander, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi. Iran has vowed revenge. The Iran-backed Hezbollah has said it supports Iran’s right to “punish” Israel, and in televised remarks on Friday, its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, said a response was coming.
