I have previously written about a tendency by medical study authors to downplay their results if they don’t conform with the official narrative regarding the COVID-19 vaccines.A study done in Iceland and published last summer found that double-vaccinated individuals were 42% more likely to become reinfected than others. But in their conclusions the authors called this just a “slightly higher” probability.Now, a new study is out, published in the BMJ, that deals with female menstruation problems following vaccination. Nothing to worry about, according to mainstream media reporting. Indeed, in their conclusions the authors say:Weak and inconsistent associations were observed between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and healthcare contacts for bleeding in women who are postmenopausal, and even less evidence was recorded of an association for menstrual disturbance or bleeding in women who were premenopausal. These findings do not provide substantial support for a causal association between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and healthcare contacts related to menstrual or bleeding disorders.No reason to worry – really? Let’s take a look at the results section now: 2,580,007 (87.6%) of 2,946,448 women received at least one SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and 1,652,472 (64.0%) 2,580,007 of vaccinated women received three doses before the end of follow-up. The highest risks for bleeding in women who were postmenopausal were observed after the third dose, in the 1-7 days risk window (hazard ratio 1.28 (95% confidence interval 1.01 to 1.62)) and in the 8-90 days risk window (1.25 (1.04 to 1.50)). The impact of adjustment for covariates was modest. Risk of postmenopausal bleeding suggested a 23-33% increased risk after 8-90 days with BNT162b2 [Pfizer] and mRNA-1273 [Moderna] after the third dose, but the association with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 [AstraZeneca] was less clear. For menstrual disturbance or bleeding in women who were premenopausal, adjustment for covariates almost completely removed the weak associations noted in the crude analyses.So, actually significant risk for postmenopausal even after adjustments, but for premenopausal the “weak associations” were removed after adjustment for covariates. Why those huge adjustments? Before adjustment they found statistically significant increases of up to 44% – but that top figure was ‘adjusted’ away to just 4% (see Table 3). Yet even after these heroic adjustments there was still a 25% increase in menstrual disturbance following the first dose. Anyhow, let’s look at the actual numbers by product for postmenopausal.First Pfizer: adjusted risk (right-hand column) is 1.41 or 41% higher than the unvaccinated after 1-7 days from the third dose and 1.23 or 23% higher after 8-90 days. Both are statistically significant. “Weak and inconsistent?” Really?Now for Moderna: adjusted risk is 1.33 or 33% higher than unvaccinated after 1-7 days from first dose and also 8-90 days after the third (the latter is statistically significant). Again, “weak and inconsistent”?Finally AstraZeneca: adjusted risk is 1.24 or 24% higher than the unvaccinated 1-7 days after the first dose and 1.21 or 21% higher than unvaccinated after the second (though neither result is statistically significant).Last October, the European Medicines Agency finally recommended adding menstrual problems to the already long list of COVID-19 vaccine side-effects. It was about time, after the flood of reports from women. Its purported targets are scammers, disinformation campaigns and criminal activity that can be conducted anonymously across borders via social media. Law enforcement will have the ability to track and monitor users and block unverified accounts.In an authoritarian country that ranks poorly on freedom of expression, critics worry that the law gives the government too much control over people’s online activity. Hundreds of biometric visas have already been issued by different diplomatic services of Cameroon since the online application system went live on May 1.The country’s embassy in Belgium said it issued more than one hundred visas within two days after the system rolled out, according to information from the Foreign Ministry in Yaounde.Ahead of the launch, Foreign Minister Mbella Mbella, in a briefing on April 25, explained the purpose and functionalities of the biometric visa system, saying it is the first step in a series of government efforts aimed at improving the country’s diplomatic machinery by aligning it with cutting-edge international best practices in the domain of visa issuance.“Cameroon is writing a new page in its history. If things go on as planned, from May 1, applicants will be able to get their entry visa into Cameroon within a period of 72 hours upon submission of the online application,” said Mbella Mbella at the briefing.He also explained the category of visas available for long and short visits and their fees, which have seen an increase from the previous visa regime, in line with the prescriptions of the 2023 state budget.Short-stay visas have a validity of six months while long-stay ones are valid for 12 months, costing between 100,000 Central African francs (US$167) and XAF 200,000 ($334) depending on the type (either ordinary or express). Express visas are issued within 24 hours.The government official also explained that the new system has been designed in a flexible way to deliver secure visa stickers. The government of Taiwan is facing a hefty lawsuit from an unnamed vendor that claims it lost money when the national digital ID program was suspended over privacy and security concerns.According to Taiwan News, the unspecified contractor is asking for NT$526 million (approximately US$17 million) in compensation, for costs that include equipment purchases, venue fees, maintenance and air conditioning. The country’s Interior Ministry says it intends to retool the eID program and the Central Engraving and Printing Plant, which handles contracting, is handling the case. But the lawsuit could end up costing taxpayers as much as NT$1 billion ($33 million).Taiwan announced its eID program in 2018, projecting it to cost NT$4.89 billion ($160 million) over 10 years. Cards were due in 2020, following a trial period in Hsinchu City. The launch was later pushed to July 2021. The plan reportedly was well received by the public, with a majority of citizens in favor of replacing printed cards with digital IDs. But Covid put the program on pause during which a rash of concerns surfaced about the potential for data breaches and vulnerability to cyberattacks.Plan dogged by privacy and security fears-Among the questions that have plagued the eID program focus on its design, the amount and type of information that should be displayed or disclosed and who would manage collected data. Thornier still are concerns about national data security and foreign surveillance.Central Engraving previously got into trouble when the winner of its digital ID contract, Teco Electric & Machinery Co. Ltd., was alleged to have falsified its ISO 14298 certificate and illegally subcontracted card production to foreign firms that had connections to China. That could expose the biometric data of millions of Taiwanese to a hostile government. Impact assessments for various existing approaches to identification and authentication will also be carried out.The EU’s planned digital currency is expected to be stored in the EU Digital Identity Wallet, with support for peer-to-peer transactions.The Chair of the Rulebook Development Group is setting up several dedicated workstreams to support the draft digital euro scheme rulebook, according to the announcement.Market participants and Eurosystem (EU monetary authority) representatives will be chosen from among candidates nominated by stakeholder associations to provide expertise in strong customer authentication (SCA), digital identity initiatives, and implementing customer identity and access management (CIAM) solutions. Candidates proficient in English are sought.Remote meetings will be held frequently over a two-month period starting this May. As the European Parliament prepares to vote on the landmark Artificial Intelligence Act this month, its members are still negotiating bans and high-risk judgments for predictive policing, emotion recognition and biometrics in public spaces.Lawmakers are already expecting pushback from European Union member states and their local police forces over a proposal to ban certain AI uses from security and policing roles, including facial recognition in public spaces.But criticism may come from more than member states. Some members of parliament (MEPs) are not keen on all of the proposed bans, according to EU Observer.Among the restive factions are the center-conservative European People’s Party and Renew Europe, and liberal lawmakers including Romania MEP Drago? Tudorache, who, along with Italy socialist Brando Benifei, leads the committee conducting AI Act passage negotiations.Bans are viewed more favorably by the Greens and socialists.Among the topics being negotiated by Tudorache and Benifei’s committee involves supervision policies governing police agencies that use biometric recognition.The presumed final Parliament vote on the AI Act draft will take place May 11. The Nigeria office of the United Nations children’s fund (UNICEF) says it is working with local authorities in Bauchi State to issue birth certificates to 1,080,984 children of five years or younger this year.According to reports in the local media, the target is prompted by a survey which showed that 61.7 percent of all children in the north-eastern state were not registered at birth in 2021.At a recent planning meeting to discuss ways of scaling up birth registration in the state, an official of the UNICEF field office in Bauchi Dr. Tushar Rane underlined the importance of birth registration for every child.“Birth registration is the first step towards establishing legal identity. Without a birth certificate, a child may face difficulties in accessing basic services such as education and healthcare, as well as in exercising their rights as a citizen,” said Rane as quoted by the Daily Independent.“Birth registration is an essential tool for protecting children’s rights and ensuring their access to basic services, as well as for promoting development and citizenship in Bauchi State and beyond.”Matthew Temidayo, national director in charge of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics at the National Population Commission (NPC), further emphasized the usefulness of the exercise, saying birth registration minimizes chances of children being exposed to situations of exploitation, child labour and trafficking.He said that the registration drive will be carried out in all the 20 local government areas of the state.The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Bauchi state government and the association of local governments of Nigeria are also expected to play key roles in the birth registration process.After Bauchi, the NPC says the exercise will be extended to other states of the federation.Findings from a survey conducted last year by Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed there was progress in birth registration as 60 percent of all children born in the country were said to be registered at birth.UNICEF has been supporting birth registration efforts around the world including recently in Pakistan. Nor is it likely to bring the changes Syria’s neighbors want, such as an agreement on refugee returns and moves to reduce drug trafficking.Syria is returning to the Arab fold even though there is no sign of a resolution to the country’s uprising-turned-civil war, now in its 13th year. The long-stalemated conflict has killed nearly a half million people since March 2011 and displaced half of the country’s pre-war population of 23 million. Israel also transferred a shipment of batteries from the SPYDER air defense system to the Gulf country.In the eyes of the UAE, the Israeli response contrasted starkly with that of the United States, the chapter reveals. The sense of lackluster American support became a significant source of tension between the Emirati government and the Biden administration, it says.“Trump’s Peace” was published in Hebrew in December 2021, making headlines for its inclusion of an interview Ravid held with Donald Trump in which the former US president went on an expletive-ridden rant against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who until then had been seen as one of the closest allies of the ex-commander-in-chief.Two years later, the book has been translated into English and the new version contains an additional chapter on the status of the Abraham Accords since US President Joe Biden entered office.In the new chapter, Ravid reveals how in 2021 then-prime minister Naftali Bennett gradually bought into the importance of personal involvement in strengthening ties with the UAE. Israel reached out to Manila, which agreed to allow Abu Dhabi to take those batteries and wait to receive a shipment at a later date.In April 2022, eight flights’ worth of SPYDER batteries were ferried to the UAE from the Nevatim military air base in Israel, according to the book.The shipments were greatly appreciated by the UAE, which had grown increasingly frustrated with the Biden administration in the weeks and months after the Houthi attacks.In the aftermath of the first Houthi strike, the US agreed to an Emirati request that the US refuel Emirati fighter jets deployed to monitor the country’s skies around the clock. An increasing number of northern Alberta residents forced to flee fast-moving wildfires are learning their homes may not have survived the flames.Four northern Indigenous communities —  Sturgeon Lake Cree First Nation, Little Red River Cree Nation, East Prairie Métis Settlement and Little Red River Cree Nation — were reporting the loss of numerous buildings on Tuesday.At least 40 structures were lost on the Sturgeon Lake First Nation, located 360 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, its chief said in a video posted to social media. "We're still evaluating the damage," said Chief Sheldon Sunshine, of the Sturgeon Lake Cree First Nation. "As the fire is still ongoing, there is more and more damage that continues to occur." Around 1,600 people were forced to flee from the community on Friday. It could be up to a month before they are allowed to return home. Heavy rain and cooler temperatures Monday provided a temporary reprieve for communities in some parts of the province but little to no precipitation fell in the further reaches of northern Alberta. The drought-like conditions, powerful winds and a forecasted return to extreme heat are expected to fuel wildfires over the coming days.As of Tuesday morning, 89 wildfires were burning across Alberta, 24 of which were burning out of control. Around 30,000 people remain displaced from their homes across the province. 'Substantial damage' Sunshine said no access is being granted to the Sturgeon Lake Cree First Nation community and the band council will be bringing in security to secure the evacuation zone. The immediate damage to infrastructure is already extensive, he said. "We want to keep people safe," he said.  "There is substantial damage to the power grid. There are power poles in multiple areas that are down. Our water treatment plant went down due to loss of power."This is going to take several weeks to sort out.… We're asking our residents to be patient with us as we work on our recovery plan." The East Prairie Metis Settlement, located about 125 kilometres to the east, lost 14 homes. About 3,700 residents scrambled to get out of the area after the evacuation order was put in place last week, said Darryel Sowan, the community's emergency management communications co-ordinator.There is no road into the community, so most people used boats to flee, while others were flown out."Because it's isolated, a lot of those people have never even been away from the reserve," Sowan said."We want to get them back there and they want to go home. We are trying our best.In nearby Fox Lake, the province said a 4,400-hectare wild fire destroyed 20 homes, an RCMP detachment, a store and the community's water treatment plant.Both communities are located about 550 kilometres north of EdmontonA brief window of wetter and cooler weather is allowing fire crews to tackle the dozens of wildfires burning across Alberta. Nearly 30,000 people are still out of their homes.Alberta's wildfire season had an intense start, with mandatory evacuation orders issued over the past week to more than a dozen communities across the province. The province, which remains in a state of emergency, has asked the federal government for help and requested military assistance to help maintain order and prevent looting in evacuation zones.  Meanwhile, firefighting aid has been coming from across the country.Officials from Alberta Emergency Management Agency and Alberta Wildfire are expected to provide an update on the wildfire situation Tuesday at 3 p.m. MT.
