But Pfizer's and Moderna’s new bivalent boosters target both the original strain and the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants, which the FDA says are responsible for most cases in the U.S. and are expected to circulate this fall and winter.The bivalent boosters will replace the monovalent boosters that have been used in the U.S., but Pfizer's and Moderna’s monovalent formulations will continue to be used as primary vaccines.While this is the first time a bivalent vaccine has been used in the U.S. to fight COVID-19, the employment of bivalent vaccines is nothing new. However, she said that since this is the first time the mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines have been updated, she would have liked to see some human data before the shots were made available to the public.“Being the first time, I think it would be really helpful for the public health trust to have a little more human data,” Gandhi said. “It may not need to be, you know, a full-scale trial and a big trial, but really just even showing [that] antibody responses increase in humans; even that, I think would give the public more trust that we've done a little more vetting of this updated vaccine,” she added.Both Pfizer and Moderna plan to run human trials for their bivalent boosters. I’m very confident about this,” Califf said.With breakthrough cases common even among fully vaccinated and boosted Americans, Marks said the FDA is hoping this new vaccine will not only guard against hospitalization and death, but also offer protection from symptomatic disease the way the first crop of vaccines did in late 2020 and early 2021.“We don’t know for a fact yet whether we will get to that same level, but that is the goal,” Marks said. “The hope here is not to have to give lots of vaccines each year. It’s hopefully to have this be the vaccine that hopefully holds us for as much of this or for the entire season, if it can,” he added.El-Sadr emphasized that even if breakthrough cases continue to occur, people should still seek vaccinations because they offer protection from some of the worst outcomes of COVID-19.“I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that these booster doses save lives,” she said. “I appreciate the disappointment that people have had in terms of getting infected even though they’ve done everything right. Religious schools separate classes by gender starting in fourth grade and both the school and Education Ministry have supported him being placed in class with other boys next year.But in a letter addressed to the Education Ministry body that administers national religious schools, 17 rabbis, including several leading figures from the national-religious community, argued that  “fantasies do not change reality.”“Jewish law doesn’t recognize artificial changes and forbids the behavior and dressing of a boy as a girl or a girl as a boy,” the letter claimed. “It is the role of a religious school to maintain [Jewish law] and act on it” by sending the child to a girls only class next year.The letter referred to the student as a “daughter with the privilege to grow as a woman and a mother.”The letter was signed by a number of prominent religious figures, including rabbis Dov Lior, a hardliner with ties to extremist settlers and Yaakov Ariel, the state-funded chief rabbi of neighboring Ramat Gan.Ariel had previously recommended that the student be allowed in the boys class after consulting with the Education Ministry, Channel 12 reported.The Association for LGBTQ Equality in Israel — Aguda accused the rabbis of putting the child and others “in danger of mental harm that could lead to a loss of life, in total opposition to professional and medical authorities in Israel and around the world.”“We implore all authorities: leave the boy alone,” the group said, according to Channel 12. “It is in your power to prevent the next tragedy.”The affair has opened a rift among parents in Givat Shmuel, a national-religious bastion outside Tel Aviv. WASHINGTON (JTA) — A poll showed that the US Supreme Court’s removal of abortion protections and concerns about democracy are driving Jewish turnout in November, which will favor Democrats substantially.The poll released Thursday by the Jewish Electorate Institute, a body with a board made up of prominent Jewish Democrats, found that 70 percent of Jewish voters favored Democrats in the midterm congressional elections, while 24% favored Republicans.Asked to select from a list the two issues most important to them as they considered their vote, 45% of respondents listed fears about democracy as one of the issues, and 38% listed the court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision guaranteeing a right to an abortion.Respondents were highly motivated to vote, the poll found; 9.3 was the mean in responses to a question measuring motivation with 0 as not motivated and 10 as extremely motivated. Asked if the abortion reversal motivated them to vote, 56% of respondents overall said it made them more motivated, with 44% saying it made them much more motivated. NEW YORK — Yeshiva University on Thursday said the US Supreme Court had provided a “roadmap” for blocking an LGBTQ student club, even as the court dismissed the university’s request to intervene in the case.The flagship Modern Orthodox university in New York City had asked the highest US court to overrule a state court’s demand that the university recognize a campus Pride club.The Supreme Court said in a 5-4 decision on Wednesday that Yeshiva University needed to exhaust other options for appeals before it would hear the case. The head of the Hadash-Ta’al alliance predicted his faction would be a major juggernaut in post-election coalition jockeying, after his erstwhile Joint List of Arab-led parties splintered into two separate slates Thursday night.Hadash chief Ayman Odeh’s comments, following a surprise 11th-hour decision to split with the hardline Balad party and run only as an alliance with Ta’al, reflected the shifting political dynamics created by the divorce, even as analysts questioned whether Hadash-Ta’al would manage to secure enough votes to return to the Knesset and be a player.“We will be the most important party the day after elections,” Odeh, head of communist Hadash, told the press after submitting the joint slate alongside Ta’al head Ahmed Tibi Thursday night. “Everyone will come to us and we’ll make them wait in line until they respect us and our constituency.”However, the split is widely predicted to help ease Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu’s path back to power, with Balad predicted to fall well below the necessary 3.25% ballot threshold to enter the Knesset. Migrants were told jobs were available in Boston and boarded a plane in Texas, NPR reported.The plane instead went to Martha's Vineyard, as part of a political stunt by Florida's governor.The legality of the move is coming under scrutiny.Migrants sent to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, by Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis to troll liberals said they thought they were going to Boston, NPR reported. NPR interviewed three of the migrants, were part of a group of 50 flown on two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.The island, part of Massachusetts, is well-known as a vacation spot for wealthy liberals like Barack Obama and John Kerry, who own property there.The migrants said, per NPR, that a woman they identified as "Perla" lured them from a shelter in San Antonio into boarding a plane with promises of expedited work permits in Boston."She (Perla) offered us help. Help that never arrived," one migrant, named by the outlet as Andres, said. "Now we are here. Vice President Kamala Harris twice declared the U.S. southern border is "secure" during an interview Sunday, despite the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants who routinely cross into the country every month.During an interview on "Meet the Press" aired during the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Harris was asked by NBC News anchor Chuck Todd whether the border is secure. The vice president responded that the immigration system was "broken" under the Trump administration and still "needs to be fixed.""I think that there is no question that we have to do what the president and I asked Congress to do, the first request we made: pass a bill to create a pathway to citizenship," Harris said.
