The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in the Holy Land says it will not cooperate with Israeli police orders to limit the number of people attending the Holy Fire ceremony a day before Easter Sunday, which this year falls on April 24 for the Eastern Orthodox Church.According to a statement from the church, police are allowing only 1,000 people to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on April 23, along with another 500 who can view the ceremony from outside the church.“The Patriarchate believes that there is no justification for these additional unjust restrictions, and affirms its explicit, clear and complete rejection of all restrictions,” it says in a statement. “The Patriarchate is fed up with police restrictions on freedom to worship and with its unacceptable methods of dealing with the God given rights of Christians to practice rituals and have to access their holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem.”The church alleges that after attempts to work with police in the past, “promises were great and what actually took place on the ground was not even remotely close to those promises.”“Accordingly, the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem has decided, by the power of the Lord, that it will not compromise its right to provide spiritual services in all churches and squares. It also announces that prayers will be held as usual by the Patriarchate and its priests, hoping that believers are able to participate,” the church says, calling on followers to flock to the church to attend the ceremony in person.The annual ceremony, in which believers believe a holy fire descends from heaven, lighting candles which are then taken around the world, is normally attended by large crowds, and scuffles are common, as worshipers fight for access to the candles.

Denmark stocks up on iodine pills to bolster nuclear emergency plan-APR 11,22

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Denmark's Health Agency, concerned by the war in Ukraine, will buy 2 million iodine tablets to protect people in the event of a nuclear accident close to the Nordic country, it said on Monday.Iodine is considered a way of protecting the body against conditions such as thyroid cancer in case of radioactive exposure, and worries about nuclear incidents in Ukraine have prompted stockpiling across Europe."The developments of COVID-19 over the past two years has shown us that it is important to be prepared. BUCHA, Ukraine (AFP) — As Bucha emerges from the horror of the Russian occupation, townspeople are desperate to know the fate of loved ones.Some know how their story ends.Others still wait to find out, hoping against hope it will not end in tragedy.Tetiana Ustymenko knows the conclusion to her story.Her son and his two friends were gunned down in the street outside and she buried them in the garden of the family home.Oleh Onyshchenko is searching for two family members. He arrives on a windswept plain where 50 body bags are laid out on the ground.His relatives are burnt beyond recognition, he thinks, though a wedding ring may prove a clue to end the mystery of their final moments.Oleksandr Kovtun still has hope. His son is missing but perhaps, he reasons, the Russians abducted them as they retreated.Bucha — a commuter town on Kyiv’s doorstep — was occupied by Russian forces in the early days of the invasion.The horrors left behind after their withdrawal last week are slowly being uncovered.Garden burial-There is a black sash draped across one door on Kyiv-Myrotska Street. Out front a car riddled with gunfire has a pool of clotted blood in the passenger seat. There are three bodies in the back garden.Ustymenko, 65, says she put her son Serhii and his friends Nastia and Maksym here on March 4.Serhii, 25, offered to evacuate her but she was reluctant — it was too dangerous. Without her knowledge he came anyway.“I heard shooting but I was sure he wasn’t there,” she said.“Then the phone turned on. I said, ‘Son, son?’ and a neighbor told me a car was shot in front of him. He said my son is gone.”Maksym was shot in the forehead by a sniper through the windscreen, she said. Nastia was shot in the legs. Serhii was shot in the back.They lay in the open for three days before Tetiana’s husband Valerii washed and dressed the bodies and dug a simple grave with the neighbors’ help.It is at the bottom of the garden past daffodils. There is one mound in the sandy earth, but each body is marked by a sprig of conifer. On top is the metal blade of a broken snow shovel.The year before last Serhii snapped it, prompting a squabble with his mother. “I put this here to say ‘Forgive me son,'” she said. “I want him to forgive me for arguing with him for nothing.”“How can I live now?”Searching body bags-Onyshchenko arrives to inspect the bodies of Bucha’s war dead at the cemetery. There are around 50, some stacked on top of each other, others lie side by side on the ground in crumpled black body bags.A gaggle of police officers is poring over paperwork, writing preliminary reports to identify the corpses.Every few minutes they unzip a new bag. In one, a woman’s arms lie tangled across her lifeless face. In another, rigor mortis gives the impression of a man standing to attention.Some contain only body parts, scorched and severed.Onyshchenko, 49, hangs back. In his pocket are photocopies of the ID card of his sister-in-law Tamila, and the birth certificate of her 14-year-old daughter Anna.They left Bucha in a borrowed car but the owner later saw a video of it ablaze in the street.He has come to look for distinctive jewelry, to identify what remains of the mother and daughter.A police officer tucks a handwritten note into one gaping body bag. “Bucha, man, approximately 30-years-old,” it reads. “Eyes open. Bodily injuries on the left side of the abdomen, on the neck and hands.”“A month ago no-one could imagine something like this was possible,” says Onyshchenko.Kovtun’s 19-year-old son Oleksii is missing. “He went into the city and did not come back.”The 58-year-old now clings to the hope he might have been taken by the Russians.Another young man from their street is rumored to have been taken captive in Russia. Maybe this was the fate of his boy too.“My son knew him,” he says. “There’s no other hope for us.”On Saturday the bodies of 20 people dressed in civilian clothing were found strewn along a single Bucha street.On Sunday a city official said 57 civilians had been buried in a mass grave by their neighbors.The register of the dead grows day by day.“We asked around about him, talked with a woman who deals with such cases,” said Kovtun.“We hope he is not on those lists.”

For the second day in a row, Palestinians reportedly broke into Joseph’s Tomb near the West Bank city of Nablus and vandalized the shrine.Video circulating on social media showed a man throwing rocks inside the site. The already-vandalized tomb can be seen in the footage.The date and time of the video could not be immediately verified, but it appeared to have been filmed during the daytime.In the video, a man is heard saying in Arabic: “There is no Joseph’s Tomb anymore, you traitors.”The comment was apparently a reference to the Palestinian Authority, after the Nablus regional governor pledged to restore the site following its vandalization on Sunday, and reaffirmed that the shrine was under the PA’s protection. Ibrahim Ramadan also said that Nablus was a “city of three religions.”According to Palestinian media reports, PA security forces were working Monday morning to restore order in the area surrounding the shrine.Joseph’s Tomb is located inside Area A of the West Bank, which is officially under complete Palestinian Authority control, though the Israeli military conducts activities there. BOSTON (AP) — Russian military hackers attempted to knock out power to millions of Ukrainians last week in a long-planned attack, but were foiled, Ukrainian government officials said Tuesday.At one targeted high-voltage power station, the hackers succeeded in penetrating and disrupting part of the industrial control system, but people defending the station were able to prevent electrical outages, the Ukrainians said.“The threat was serious, but it was prevented in a timely manner,” a top Ukrainian cybersecurity official, Victor Zhora, told reporters through an interpreter. “It looks that we were very lucky.”The hackers from Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency used an upgraded version of malware first seen in its successful 2016 attack that caused blackouts in Kyiv, officials said, that was customized to target multiple substations. They simultaneously seeded malware designed to wipe out computer operating systems, hindering recovery.Authorities did not specify how many substations were targeted or their location, citing security concerns, but a deputy energy minister, Farid Safarov, said “2 million people would have been without electricity supply if it was successful.”Zhora, the deputy chair of the State Special Service of Special Communications, said the malware was programmed to knock out power on Friday evening just as people returned home from work and switched on news reports.He said that power grid networks were penetrated before the end of February, when Russia invaded, and that the attackers later uploaded the malware, dubbed Industroyer2. The malware succeeded in disrupting one component of the impacted power station’s management systems, also known as SCADA systems.Zhora would not offer further details or explain how the attack was defeated or which partners may have assisted directly in defeating it. He did acknowledge the depth of international assistance Ukraine has received in identifying intrusions, and the challenges of trying to rid government, power grid, and telecommunications networks of attackers. The helpers include keyboard warriors from US Cyber Command.Cybercom was asked if it assisted in the emergency response, but did not immediately answer.The Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine thanked Microsoft and the cybersecurity firm ESET for their assistance in dealing with the power grid attack in a bulletin posted online. Officials said the destructive attacks had been planned at least since March 23.GRU hackers from a group that researchers call Sandworm twice successfully attacked Ukraine’s power grid — in the winters of 2015 and 2016. US prosecutors indicted six GRU officials in 2020 for using a previous version of the Industroyer malware to attack Ukraine’s power grid by gaining control of electrical substation switches and circuit breakers.In the 2016 attack, Sandworm hackers used Industroyer to turn circuit breakers on and off in a sequence designed to create a blackout, said Jean-Ian Boutin, director of threat research at ESET.“We know that Industroyer still has the capability to turn off circuit breakers,” he said.Working closely with Ukrainian responders, ESET also determined that the attackers had infected networks at the targeted plants with disk-wiping software.Successfully activating the malware would have rendered plant systems inoperable, seriously hindering remediation and recovery, and destroying the attackers’ digital footprints, Boutin said.One of the destructive malware varieties used in the attack, dubbed CaddyWiper, was first discovered by ESET in mid-March being used against a Ukrainian bank, he said.Western prosecutors blame Sandworm for a series of high-profile cyberattacks including the most destructive, the 2017 NotPetya wiper virus that caused more than $10 billion in damage globally by destroying data on entire networks of computers of companies doing business in Ukraine, including those belonging to the shipper Maersk and the pharmaceutical company Merck.Russia’s use of cyberattacks against Ukrainian infrastructure during its invasion has been limited compared with experts’ pre-war expectations. In the early hours of the war, however, an attack Ukraine blames on Russia knocked offline an important satellite communications link that also impacted tens of thousands of Europeans from France to Poland.In another serious cyberattack of the war, hackers knocked offline the internet and cellular service of a major telecommunications company that serves the military, Ukretelecom, for most of the day on March 28.Zhora said “the potential of Russian [state-backed] hackers has been overestimated” and cited a number of reasons why he believes cyber attacks have not played a major role in the conflict:— When the aggressor is pummeling civilian targets with bombs and rockets, there is little need to hide behind covert cyber activity. — Ukraine has significantly upped its cyber defenses with the help of volunteers from sympathetic countries. — Attacks as sophisticated as this effort to knock out power are complex and tend to require a lot of time.“This is not an easy thing to do,” Zhora said.Ukraine has been under steady Russian cyberattack for the past eight years, with Zhora noting that the attacks have tripled since the invasion when compared with the same period last year.Russia has said its invasion was needed to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine, a false claim the US had predicted Russia would make as a pretext for the invasion. BERLIN, Germany (AFP) — Pressure was mounting on Germany to up its game over the war in Ukraine on Tuesday as Kyiv snubbed the country’s president and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was accused of a weak response to the crisis.On a visit to Poland, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier admitted he had offered to visit Ukraine with other EU leaders, but Kyiv had told him he was not welcome right now.“I was prepared to do this, but apparently, and I must take note of this, this was not wanted in Kyiv,” Steinmeier told reporters.Steinmeier, a former foreign minister, has faced growing criticism since Russia invaded Ukraine in February for his years-long detente policy toward Moscow.Scholz, meanwhile, was being panned for his own failure to visit Kyiv, as well as his hesitancy over providing heavy weapons to help Ukraine resist Russia’s invasion.In the first trip by a high-level German government delegation since the start of the conflict, three top politicians were due to travel to Ukraine on Tuesday, a source told AFP.Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann of the liberal FDP, Michael Roth of Scholz’s Social Democrats, and Anton Hofreiter of the Greens were meeting members of the Ukrainian parliament in the west of the country, the source said, confirming a report in Der Spiegel magazine.But following visits by several other leaders in recent days, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, critics have asked why Scholz himself is not making the trip.‘Strong signal’While Johnson was “walking side by side with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv” on Saturday, “Scholz was waving at an election campaign rally in Luebeck” ahead of an upcoming regional vote, the Bild daily noted.Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, has said a Scholz trip to Kyiv would send a “strong signal,” while the opposition CDU has urged him to “get an idea of the situation on the ground.”Even Strack-Zimmermann, a member of Scholz’s ruling coalition, suggested in an interview with the business daily Handelsblatt on Monday that he should “start using his powers of direction and leadership.”In office as chancellor since December, Scholz has often been mocked for his taciturn demeanor and was once dubbed “Scholzomat” for his boring, robotic speeches.The chancellor has also come under fire for so far refusing to send heavy weapons to Ukraine, despite his dramatic U-turn on Germany’s defense policy prompted by Russia’s invasion.Germany had been reluctant for historical reasons to send weapons to Ukraine, but it has now sent anti-tank weapons, missile launchers, and surface-to-air missiles in response to the conflict.However, critics want Scholz to go further.The three politicians visiting Ukraine on Tuesday are all in favor of delivering heavy weapons to Ukraine.‘Insecure government’Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, from the Green party, also voiced support for such a move on the sidelines of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg on Monday.This prompted a claim from the NTV broadcaster that Baerbock was “showing the chancellor how it’s done,” and has surpassed Scholz to become “the one who sets the pace in an insecure government.”Germany has almost exhausted its ability to supply Ukraine with weapons from its army reserves, but is working on direct deliveries from the arms industry, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said during the weekend.Ukraine has received offers of tanks from Rheinmetall, as well as other companies, including the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) arms group, according to media reports.However, some of the tanks could reportedly take many months to refurbish, while critics have also pointed out that Ukrainian soldiers would have to be trained to use them.“It’s not just a matter of getting in the vehicle and driving off, unless you want to expose yourself to the risk of being attacked immediately,” Strack-Zimmermann said in an interview with Der Spiegel.Instead, Strack-Zimmermann suggested sending tanks to Ukraine from Eastern European countries that would be easier for Ukrainian soldiers to use immediately.
