Gaza saw its first death outside of quarantine facilities from the coronavirus Wednesday afternoon, as nine new cases were confirmed in residential areas on the coastal enclave, raising fears of growing community spread among its beleaguered residents.Sixty-one-year-old Rabah Labad, a member of Hamas’ military wing, became the first victim in a new cluster of coronavirus cases that appeared in the Gaza Strip suddenly, after six months of the virus having been successfully contained. WASHINGTON (AP) — After expressing frustration at the slow pace of approval for coronavirus treatments, US President Donald Trump announced Sunday the emergency authorization of convalescent plasma for COVID-19 patients.The announcement came after days of White House officials suggesting there were politically motivated delays by the Food and Drug Administration in approving a vaccine and therapeutics for the disease that has upended Trump’s reelection chances.On the eve of the Republican National Convention, Trump issued the emergency order — it would make it easier for some patients to obtain the treatment — in a news conference Sunday evening, according to White House officials.The blood plasma, taken from patients who have recovered from the coronavirus and rich in antibodies, may provide benefits to those battling with the disease. But the evidence has been inconclusive as to how it works or how best to administer it.Many scientists and physicians believe that convalescent plasma might provide some benefit, but it is far from a breakthrough. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday said he would accept a compromise proposal to push off the deadline to pass a state budget, likely averting the immediate threat of new elections.“Out of national responsibility I decided to accept the compromise proposal of MK [Zvi] Hauser,” he said in a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem.The announcement came as the Knesset Finance Committee was set to vote on a bill sponsored by Hauser, a member of the Derech Eretz party, to push off Monday night’s budget deadline by 100 days, delaying the possibility that Israelis will go to the polls for the fourth time since April 2019.If the Knesset fails to pass the delay bill by Monday night, the government will automatically fall and new elections will be set.“This proposal allows the immediate flow of funds to citizens and the economy, and it prevents the need for elections,” Netanyahu said.In response Blue and White issued a statement saying the proof will be in Netanyahu’s actions, and urging him to “keep your promise, prevent elections and live up to the agreement” — an apparent reference to the coalition deal between the parties.Channel 12 reported that Blue and White was still not entirely convinced that Netanyahu will indeed ensure that the election crisis is over. Marco and Laura both forecast to hit US as hurricanes-[Good Morning America]-DANIEL MANZO-August 23, 2020

Tropical Storm Marco is expected to become a hurricane later today as hurricane and storm surge warnings have been issued for parts of the Gulf Coast.Marco is currently 325 miles south-southeast of southern Louisiana and the storm has winds of 70 mph while moving north-northwest at 14 mph.Tropical Storm Laura has strengthened Sunday morning and now has winds of 50 mph. The storm is located 70 miles northwest of Port Au Prince, Haiti, and is bringing life-threatening flash flooding over portions of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.The track of the storm has moved slightly westward from earlier in the morning. The National Hurricane Center is still forecasting that Laura will come ashore along the Gulf Coast as a Category 2 hurricane by later Wednesday and into Thursday.There are tropical storm watches and warnings for parts of Hispaniola, Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.There is also a tropical storm watch for the Florida Keys and the waters off southern mainland Florida.Marco is expected to gain some strength today and then quickly move into the Gulf Coast.As with all tropical systems, the area to the right of the center is where the greatest impacts will occur. Right now, the center of Marco looks to be coming ashore somewhere on the Gulf Coast from southern Louisiana to southern Mississippi, with the likely region being very close to New Orleans.Marco is expected to make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane during the day on Monday and when Marco comes ashore it will have a storm surge of 2 to 6 feet, rainfall of up to 6 inches, possible tornadoes, and strong winds.Laura will make its way into Cuba by tonight and move across Cuba overnight into Monday.Locally, over 8 inches of rain, strong winds and dangerous surf is expected from Hispaniola to Cuba over the next 36 hours and this will likely cause flash flooding and mudslides.The official forecast track shows Laura possibly reaching the southern Gulf of Mexico as Marco is making landfall on Monday.The forecast after this point remains somewhat uncertain. However, in the overnight forecast models, there is increasing agreement in a strengthening hurricane Laura moving towards the U.S. Gulf Coast later this week and this has at least some potential to be a more impactful weather event later this week on the Gulf Coast.It remains to be seen what the intensity of both storms will be, as well as their exact location as to whether this situation would break any tropical records.The last time there were two tropical cyclones in the Gulf of Mexico was in 2002, where Tropical Storm Fay was off the Texas coast and Tropical Depression Eduoard was off the Florida West Coast.The shortest time between two named storms making landfall in Louisiana was five days and that was back in 1885.Marco and Laura both forecast to hit US as hurricanes originally appeared on abcnews.go.com

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Crews from across the U.S. West, military planes and National Guard troops poured into California on Sunday to join the fight against two dozen major wildfires burning across the state, as officials warned of more dry lightning storms approaching.The worst of the blazes, including the second and third largest wildfires in recorded California history, were burning in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, where more than 200,000 people have been told to flee their homes.2"Extreme fire behavior with short and long range spotting are continuing to challenge firefighting efforts. Fires continue to make runs in multiple directions and impacting multiple communities," the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said of the largest conflagration, the LNU Lightning Complex.The fires, which were ignited by lightning from dry thunderstorms across Northern and Central California over the past week, have killed at least six people and destroyed some 700 homes and other structures. All told nearly one million acres have been blackened, according to Cal Fire.Smoke and ash has blanketed much of the northern part of California for days, drifting for miles and visible from several states away.2The LNU Complex, which began as a string of smaller fires that merged into one massive blaze, has burned across roughly 340,000 acres of Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Yolo and Solano counties, Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said at a news briefing on Sunday.It is now the second-largest wildfire on record in the state and was only 17% contained as of Sunday afternoon.
