The United Nations Humans Rights Council voted Friday to adopt a report accusing Israel of crimes against humanity for its handling of violent protests on the border with Gaza Strip.Twenty-three countries voted to in favor of the measure, with eight opposing it. Another 15 countries abstained, while one was absent.The countries that voted against adopting the report were Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Fiji, Hungary, Togo and Ukraine.The decision was condemned by the Foreign Ministry, which claimed that a “moral majority” did not vote in favor of the measure.“Dictatorships and hypocrites vote in favor of the singling out, absurd pro Hamas pro terror report,” ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon wrote on Twitter.“We will not cooperate with this mockery and will keep protecting Israel and Israelis,” he added.Aviva Raz Schecter, the Israeli ambassador to UN institutions in Geneva, said ahead of the vote that the report “was born in sin” and accused it of ignoring the role of the Gaza-ruling Hamas group in the clashes. HOUSTON (Reuters) - Fallout from a petrochemical fire outside Houston continued for a sixth day on Saturday, with emergency workers struggling to remove volatile fuels from exposed tanks and ship traffic disrupted on the nation's busiest oil port.A fire that burned for three days broke out last Sunday at Mitsui & Co's Intercontinental Terminals Co site in Deer Park, Texas. It damaged or destroyed 11 giant tanks each holding up to 3 million gallons of fuels used to make gasoline and plastics.On Friday, flames again erupted for an hour and halted efforts to remove volatile fuels that leaked when a containment wall breached. There were no injuries reported on Friday.The leak and fire prompted the U.S. Coast Guard to close a portion of the waterway connecting Houston to the Gulf of Mexico.On Saturday, 23 ships were waiting to enter the ship channel and 20 ships were waiting to leave, according to Houston Pilots, whose members guide ships in and out of the port. The waterway remained closed between Tucker Bayou and beacon 116 on Saturday, said JJ Plunkett, port agent for Houston Pilots.ITC repaired early on Saturday a 10-foot wide breach in a containment wall that had allowed chemicals to escape the site and had spread fire outside the facility for a time on Friday, a spokesman said. ITC said on Saturday it hoped to restart efforts to remove the fuels but could not say when they could begin.The state on Friday filed suit against ITC alleging unauthorized air pollution and unauthorized outdoor burning, citing the three-day fire and releases of benzene and volatile organic compounds into the air. Crews had replaced windows that worshipers smashed in a desperate attempt to escape when the attacker mowed them down during Friday prayers. Bullet holes were plastered over and painted. There wasn’t time to replace the carpet, which was pulled out and buried because it was soaked in blood.Shagat Khan, the president of the Muslim Association of Canterbury, said they hadn’t planned to open the mosque so soon but when they saw the crowds gathering after the police cordon was removed they decided to allow people to enter in managed groups “so the mosque will be alive again.”“Those who lost their families are of course quite emotional,” he said. “And those who were present here during the incident, of course the memories come back. The flashbacks.”The gunman killed a total of 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch on March 15, in the nation’s worst terrorist attack. Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, has been charged with murder in the attacks and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on April 5.Abdullahi Ibrahim Diriye, the uncle of the youngest victim of the shooting, 3-year-old Mucaad Ibrahim, visited the mosque with the boy’s father. MONTREAL (AFP) — A priest was stabbed in front of his congregation live on television during morning mass on Friday at Canada’s biggest church, in what police described as an isolated incident.Footage broadcast on a Catholic television station and picked up by the top-rated CTV network showed a man in jeans, parka and white baseball cap approach Claude Grou at St Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, in front of 60 horrified parishioners.He is seen chasing the priest around the altar and standing menacingly over the 77-year-old as he falls to the ground, scattering candles and a banner, before stabbing his victim.Witness Adele Plamondon told public broadcaster Radio-Canada the priest — who escaped with minor injuries — was about to start reading the gospel, when “this man drew a knife and ran up to stab him.”“I’d thought he was just going to kneel in front of the altar to pray, like many people do,” she said.The suspect remained silent during the assault but appeared “very determined,” Plamondon added.Grou recovered enough to get to his feet and is seen backing away as security officers surround the assailant, who drops his knife. The United Nations Humans Rights Council voted Friday to adopt a report accusing Israel of crimes against humanity for its handling of violent protests on the border with Gaza Strip.Twenty-three countries voted to in favor of the measure, with eight opposing it. Another 15 countries abstained, while one was absent.The countries that voted against adopting the report were Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Fiji, Hungary, Togo and Ukraine.The decision was condemned by the Foreign Ministry, which claimed that a “moral majority” did not vote in favor of the measure.“Dictatorships and hypocrites vote in favor of the singling out, absurd pro Hamas pro terror report,” ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon wrote on Twitter.“We will not cooperate with this mockery and will keep protecting Israel and Israelis,” he added.Aviva Raz Schecter, the Israeli ambassador to UN institutions in Geneva, said ahead of the vote that the report “was born in sin” and accused it of ignoring the role of the Gaza-ruling Hamas group in the clashes. HOUSTON (Reuters) - Fallout from a petrochemical fire outside Houston continued for a sixth day on Saturday, with emergency workers struggling to remove volatile fuels from exposed tanks and ship traffic disrupted on the nation's busiest oil port.A fire that burned for three days broke out last Sunday at Mitsui & Co's Intercontinental Terminals Co site in Deer Park, Texas. It damaged or destroyed 11 giant tanks each holding up to 3 million gallons of fuels used to make gasoline and plastics.On Friday, flames again erupted for an hour and halted efforts to remove volatile fuels that leaked when a containment wall breached. There were no injuries reported on Friday.The leak and fire prompted the U.S. Coast Guard to close a portion of the waterway connecting Houston to the Gulf of Mexico.On Saturday, 23 ships were waiting to enter the ship channel and 20 ships were waiting to leave, according to Houston Pilots, whose members guide ships in and out of the port. The waterway remained closed between Tucker Bayou and beacon 116 on Saturday, said JJ Plunkett, port agent for Houston Pilots.ITC repaired early on Saturday a 10-foot wide breach in a containment wall that had allowed chemicals to escape the site and had spread fire outside the facility for a time on Friday, a spokesman said. ITC said on Saturday it hoped to restart efforts to remove the fuels but could not say when they could begin.The state on Friday filed suit against ITC alleging unauthorized air pollution and unauthorized outdoor burning, citing the three-day fire and releases of benzene and volatile organic compounds into the air. There wasn’t time to replace the carpet, which was pulled out and buried because it was soaked in blood.Shagat Khan, the president of the Muslim Association of Canterbury, said they hadn’t planned to open the mosque so soon but when they saw the crowds gathering after the police cordon was removed they decided to allow people to enter in managed groups “so the mosque will be alive again.”“Those who lost their families are of course quite emotional,” he said. “And those who were present here during the incident, of course the memories come back. The flashbacks.”The gunman killed a total of 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch on March 15, in the nation’s worst terrorist attack. Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, has been charged with murder in the attacks and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on April 5.Abdullahi Ibrahim Diriye, the uncle of the youngest victim of the shooting, 3-year-old Mucaad Ibrahim, visited the mosque with the boy’s father. The Israeli military and police on Saturday were preparing for possible violent protests on both sides of Israel’s border with Syria after US President Donald Trump recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.“We are preparing for the possibility of tension in the northern Golan Heights,” the Israeli military said in a statement, without providing further details.According Channel 13 news, snipers have been deployed and riot control measures, such as tear gas and rubber bullets, have been supplied to forces stationed in the area.Approximately half of the Golan’s residents are Jewish Israelis while the remainder are Druze who are mostly citizens of Syria.Trump tweeted Thursday that it was “time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” upending decades of US policy on the matter.White House officials are currently drafting an official US declaration recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, with Trump set to sign it when he hosts Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington next week, Israeli TV reports said Friday.Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War and extended Israeli law to the territory in 1981, a step tantamount to annexation. But the United States and the international community have long considered it Syrian territory under Israeli occupation. The plateau lies along a strategic area on the border between Israel and Syria.Israeli leaders were exuberant over the announcement, with Netanyahu saying “the message that President Trump has given the world is that America stands by Israel.”The move was seen as a potential major boon to the prime minister less than three weeks before a general election. A signing ceremony with Trump in the White House would be an even greater boost for Netanyahu.But Trump has denied that his decision has anything to do with the Israeli elections.“I’ve been thinking about doing it for a long time,” he told Fox Business, comparing the move to his decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem.“I wouldn’t even know about that. VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis on Saturday replaced Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati as archbishop of Santiago, Chile, after he was placed under criminal investigation in the country's spiraling church sex abuse and cover-up scandal.Francis accepted Ezzati's resignation and named a temporary replacement to govern Chile's most important archdiocese: the Spanish-born Capuchin friar and current bishop of Copiapo, Chile, Monsignor Celestino Aos Braco.In a statement asking for prayers for his new job, Aos acknowledged the difficulties ahead, noting the "light and darkness, success and shortcomings, wounds and sins" of the Santiago church. But Aos too faced accusations of cover-up after a former seminarian accused him of helping stall his case years ago.The 77-year-old Ezzati had submitted his resignation to Francis two years ago when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75. MONTREAL (AFP) — A priest was stabbed in front of his congregation live on television during morning mass on Friday at Canada’s biggest church, in what police described as an isolated incident.Footage broadcast on a Catholic television station and picked up by the top-rated CTV network showed a man in jeans, parka and white baseball cap approach Claude Grou at St Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, in front of 60 horrified parishioners.He is seen chasing the priest around the altar and standing menacingly over the 77-year-old as he falls to the ground, scattering candles and a banner, before stabbing his victim.Witness Adele Plamondon told public broadcaster Radio-Canada the priest — who escaped with minor injuries — was about to start reading the gospel, when “this man drew a knife and ran up to stab him.”“I’d thought he was just going to kneel in front of the altar to pray, like many people do,” she said.The suspect remained silent during the assault but appeared “very determined,” Plamondon added.Grou recovered enough to get to his feet and is seen backing away as security officers surround the assailant, who drops his knife. NEW YORK — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday pledged action to help protect religious sites worldwide, during a visit to a New York Islamic center one week after the New Zealand mosque shootings that shocked the world.“Mosques and all places of prayer and contemplation should be safe havens, not sites of terror,” Guterres said. “Worshipers must feel safe to worship.”Guterres met with worshipers at the Islamic Cultural Center’s mosque in Manhattan as they gathered ahead of Friday prayers and offered “solidarity with the Muslim community from New York to New Zealand and beyond.”Speaking to reporters, the UN chief announced that he had tasked Spanish diplomat Miguel Moratinos with the drafting of an action plan for the United Nations to support efforts to protect religious sites.Moratinos heads the UN Alliance of Civilisations, a group led by Spain and Turkey that seeks to foster better understanding between cultures and societies.The group will reach out to governments, religious leaders and organizations to explore actions to prevent such attacks as the Christchurch shooting that left 50 dead.Addressing a meeting in Istanbul of Muslim countries, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the world to fight Islamophobia in the same way it fought anti-Semitism after the Holocaust.Guterres said the attack in New Zealand was “utterly appalling” but “perhaps not utterly surprising,” citing the rise of anti-Muslim hatred, anti-Semitism and bigotry.“Hate speech is spreading like wildfire,” he said.Social media is being exploited to spread bigotry while many political movements either openly admit to being neo-Nazi or are “lip syncing their words,” he added.The UN chief spoke of the victims of the Christchurch shooting, some of whom lost their lives saving others, and said he was “deeply moved by the extraordinary display of leadership, love and community from the people of New Zealand.”
