The Defense Ministry committee responsible for authorizing settlement construction on Wednesday advanced plans for over 1,000 homes in the West Bank, with hundreds more expected to be put on the market in the coming days.Of the 1,004 homes green-lighted by the Civil Administration’s High Planning subcommittee, 382 gained final approval for construction while 620 cleared a planning stage known as a “deposit.”The Defense Ministry is also slated to approve hundreds of homes for “marketing,” an extra stage required for projects in larger settlements. According to a Civil Administration official, these projects include ones in Alfei Menashe east of Kfar Saba and Ma’ale Efraim in the Jordan Valley.Earlier in August, over 500 homes were approved for marketing in the Beit Aryeh settlement, southeast of Rosh Ha’ayin.Among the plans advanced for deposit was a 370-home project in the central West Bank settlement of Adam, where Yotam Ovadia was stabbed to death in a terror attack last month. After the incident, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman announced he would be advancing a plan for hundreds of homes to be built in the settlement. The town of Watson Lake, Yukon, has opened its doors to residents from Lower Post, B.C. who had to evacuate their community due to a nearby wildfire.B.C. emergency officials issued the evacuation order late Tuesday afternoon, citing the nearby Lutz Creek fire. It's about five kilometres from Lower Post and estimated to be about 4,000 hectares in size.Watson Lake is located about 22 kilometres from Lower Post and opened its recreation centre to evacuees as well as motorists that may be stranded due to the closure of the Alaska Highway south of the Yukon border.Watson Lake's Chief Administrative Officer, Cam Lockwood, said all of the hotels in the community were full Tuesday night and Lower Post residents are safe."It's just that uncertainty and you know, they're all worried about their homes and their community," he said.Lockwood said Watson Lake's recreation centre was kept open Tuesday night and the community is doing, "anything we can do to assist, by having the drop-in centre open at the rec centre or a pot of coffee on so people have a place to go and hang out."The centre is also being used as an emergency shelter by the Daylu Dena Council, he added.He noted the Daylu Dena Council had a good evacuation plan in place and has received support from the B.C. and Yukon governments."Their plan flowed out very well and it made it fairly seamless when they came to town," he said.Watson Lake also sent two fire trucks and crews to Lower Post to assist with defence of the community, he said. The Defense Ministry committee responsible for authorizing settlement construction on Wednesday advanced plans for over 1,000 homes in the West Bank, with hundreds more expected to be put on the market in the coming days.Of the 1,004 homes green-lighted by the Civil Administration’s High Planning subcommittee, 382 gained final approval for construction while 620 cleared a planning stage known as a “deposit.”The Defense Ministry is also slated to approve hundreds of homes for “marketing,” an extra stage required for projects in larger settlements. According to a Civil Administration official, these projects include ones in Alfei Menashe east of Kfar Saba and Ma’ale Efraim in the Jordan Valley.Earlier in August, over 500 homes were approved for marketing in the Beit Aryeh settlement, southeast of Rosh Ha’ayin.Among the plans advanced for deposit was a 370-home project in the central West Bank settlement of Adam, where Yotam Ovadia was stabbed to death in a terror attack last month. After the incident, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman announced he would be advancing a plan for hundreds of homes to be built in the settlement. The town of Watson Lake, Yukon, has opened its doors to residents from Lower Post, B.C. who had to evacuate their community due to a nearby wildfire.B.C. emergency officials issued the evacuation order late Tuesday afternoon, citing the nearby Lutz Creek fire. It's about five kilometres from Lower Post and estimated to be about 4,000 hectares in size.Watson Lake is located about 22 kilometres from Lower Post and opened its recreation centre to evacuees as well as motorists that may be stranded due to the closure of the Alaska Highway south of the Yukon border.Watson Lake's Chief Administrative Officer, Cam Lockwood, said all of the hotels in the community were full Tuesday night and Lower Post residents are safe."It's just that uncertainty and you know, they're all worried about their homes and their community," he said.Lockwood said Watson Lake's recreation centre was kept open Tuesday night and the community is doing, "anything we can do to assist, by having the drop-in centre open at the rec centre or a pot of coffee on so people have a place to go and hang out."The centre is also being used as an emergency shelter by the Daylu Dena Council, he added.He noted the Daylu Dena Council had a good evacuation plan in place and has received support from the B.C. and Yukon governments."Their plan flowed out very well and it made it fairly seamless when they came to town," he said.Watson Lake also sent two fire trucks and crews to Lower Post to assist with defence of the community, he said. He said over 2,300 deaths have been reported.Dujarric said humanitarian organizations are trying to avoid a large-scale resurgence and have vaccinated more than 385,000 people in August against the infectious disease in high-risk districts in Hodeida and Ibb governorates.In May, nearly 275,000 people were vaccinated in Aden in southern Yemen, he said.Cholera is caused by eating contaminated food or drinking water, and Dujarric said humanitarian organizations are continuing to support water, sanitation, hygiene and health facilities in Yemen.

A Saudi woman may face the death penalty for her political activities, a rights group said Tuesday, in what is thought to be the first such instance of a female activist in the kingdom to face the death penalty.According to Human Rights Watch, Israa al-Ghomgham is one of five activists in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province for whom prosecutor are seeking the death penalty. The group said she is being tried in a terror court on a slew of charges for her peaceful activism, including for participating in protests against the discrimination of Shiites in the Sunni-majority kingdom.Ultraconservative Sunni clerics in Saudi Arabia have in the past referred to Shiites as apostates, and Shiite protesters have been accused of being allied with the kingdom’s rival, Iran.“Any execution is appalling, but seeking the death penalty for activists like Israa al-Ghomgham, who are not even accused of violent behavior, is monstrous,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW’s Middle East director.“Every day, the Saudi monarchy’s unrestrained despotism makes it harder for its public relations teams to spin the fairy tale of ‘reform’ to allies and international business,” she added.#Breaking: Reports #Saudi Arabia is about to behead a female Shi'a activist Israa Al-Ghomgham. The group said executing al-Ghomgham would set a “dangerous precedent” for other imprisoned female activists.Last month, Saudi Arabia arrested a number of women and human rights campaigners in the kingdom, including award-winning gender rights activist Samar Badawi.Samar is a vocal campaigner for blogger Raif Badawi, her brother who was arrested in 2012 and sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in jail for “insulting Islam” in a case that sparked an international outcry.The arrests came weeks after more than a dozen women’s right campaigners were detained and accused of undermining national security and collaborating with enemies of the state. Vienna (AFP) - An Austrian court on Wednesday sentenced an Afghan man to life in prison for fatally stabbing his teenage sister 28 times in a so-called "honour" killing.The man, in his early twenties, pleaded guilty to murdering his younger sister in September 2017. He received the maximum penalty.The victim, who was aged around 17 or 18, had fled domestic violence at the hands of both her father and brother and sought refuge in a shelter when her brother found her and confronted her on her way to school.The motive came from a "wrongheaded sense of honour that is not in line with the values of central European society", judge Stefan Apostol was quoted by Austrian news agency APA as saying.The man, who came to Vienna in 2013, is appealing the sentence."I want to ask for forgiveness. I committed a crime," the perpetrator, who was not named, was quoted as saying in court Wednesday, adding that he did it "because of the culture".A recent report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) examined hundreds of cases in which women were murdered, including many in which the killings were carried out in the name of so-called "honour".In such cases, women are killed -- often by male relatives -- for bringing what is described as "shame" on the family.
