Three soldiers hurt as south buffeted by Gazan fusillades-Netanyahu meets with security brass amid soaring tensions; IDF says Hamas has lost control in Strip; Palestinians claim over 110 rockets and shells fired at Israel-By TOI staff-MAY 29,18

Three Israeli soldiers were wounded by shrapnel Tuesday during afternoon barrages of mortar shells and rockets launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip, in the worst flareup of cross-border violence since the 2014 Gaza war.Earlier in the day a civilian was lightly wounded by shrapnel from projectile fire, bringing the total number of injured to four.Tuesday saw at least 60 rockets and mortar shells launched into Israel from Gaza, as well as dozens of retaliatory strikes by the IDF against terror targets in the Strip, capping weeks of soaring tensions in the region stemming from weekly protests on the border. In an early morning mortar shell barrage, one shell exploded in the yard of a kindergarten shortly before children arrived.Officials said they expected the round of fighting to continue into the night at least, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting with top defense brass. The three soldiers were hit by shrapnel from projectile attacks, apparently in separate incidents. One of the wounded was in moderate condition with injuries to his extremities, while the two others suffered light injuries only and were later released, authorities said. The three were flown by helicopter from Kibbutz Sufa near the Gaza border to Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center. Two more people were lightly injured in Sderot Tuesday afternoon while running to shelters as rocket sirens blared.Medics from the United Hatzalah rescue service said they treated at least 10 people in communities of the Gaza periphery for anxiety.Police and the army called on the public in the Gaza periphery to remain near shelters and safe rooms. They warned civilians to stay away from rocket and mortar impact sites and to call authorities to deal with the ordnance.Netanyahu was meeting Tuesday evening with Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, and the head of the Shin Bet security agency Nadav Argaman to discuss the escalation in the south.Meanwhile Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz told Army Radio the cross-border violence could potentially intensify towards the evening. He said Israel was closer to war than it had been since 2014, when the country fought a punishing 50 day war with Gaza-led fighters that the enclave has yet to recover from.“We don’t want war and neither do they, but we have our red lines,” Katz said.Rocket sirens continued to blare into Tuesday evening, capping a day that saw several volleys of mortars and missiles shot at communities surrounding the Strip starting Tuesday morning.Israeli media reported some 60 projectiles had been fired at Israel and a Palestinian website put the number at over 110. There was no official number from military officials. The military said a total of 25 rockets had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. In response to the initial barrages, Israeli planes pounded the Strip Tuesday afternoon. The army said it had struck over 35 terror targets in Gaza throughout the day belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. These included weapons caches, naval targets, and terror headquarters, the IDF said. Hamas identified one of the targets as a training facility. There were no reports of casualties in the Israeli strikes. The army also said it struck a Hamas terror tunnel in the Gaza Strip which extended hundreds of meters into Egyptian and Israeli territory. The military said the tunnel crossed from Gaza into Egypt and from there 900 meters into southern Israel, and was intended both for smuggling weapons and for attacks against Israel. The initial morning barrage of at least 28 mortar shells was claimed by the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, and came in revenge for the IDF killing three of its members in a cross-border exchange earlier in the week.No claims of responsibility were made for later volleys. Hebrew media reports said Hamas was responsible for some of them.In a statement, Islamic Jihad described its attacks as “a blessed response of the resistance,” adding, “our people’s blood is not cheap.”As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave. However, IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said Hamas had “lost control” in Gaza, after weeks of attempts to foment violence at the border. After it “failed” to achieve results through weeks of riots along the border fence, Manelis told Hadashot TV news, Hamas had turned in recent weeks to shooting attacks and bomb attacks at the border.“And today it allowed Iran-backed [Islamic] Jihad to fire a terrible barrage at the Israeli communities in the Gaza periphery,” he said.A Hamas spokesperson earlier declared that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.”“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people,” he said.Netanyahu had vowed earlier to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive.Eisenkot later toured the border area and visited projectile impact sites, including the kindergarten. Liberman said the military had launched a “massive and forceful” retaliatory attack.Perhaps learning a lesson from a flat-footed effort to defend itself in the media during deadly protests along the Gaza border earlier in the month, the Foreign Ministry launched a quick public diplomacy push, instructing ambassadors around the world to stress to local leaders and media that Israel was acting legitimately to defend itself from Gaza-based terrorism.Ambassadors were also to relay Israeli expectations that attacks from Gaza would receive unequivocal condemnations.Several foreign officials issued condemnations of Hamas and called for calm.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said that terror groups were likely to refrain from responding harshly to the Israeli strikes if there were no fatalities. The source added that Egypt was in talks with Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Israel in an effort to prevent a large-scale confrontation.Tensions along the Gaza border have soared in recent weeks amidst violent border protests led by Hamas.Since March 30, tens of thousands of Palestinians have taken part in weekly protests which Israel says are used by the terror group as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence.Protesters have attacked soldiers at the border with bombs, rocks, and Molotov cocktails, burning tires and repeatedly attempting to sabotage and breach the security fence and infiltrate Israel. They have also launched hundreds of “attack” kites carrying flaming materials over the border to spark blazes in Israeli territory. The demonstrations came to a head on May 14 when the US moved its embassy to Jerusalem and at least 60 Palestinians were killed in clashes — almost all of them Hamas members, the terror group has acknowledged. The violent demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue.Judah Ari Gross and Michael Bachner contributed to this report.

Israel intercepts protest boat trying to break Gaza blockade-Navy detains 17, tows vessel to Ashdod; Israeli medics offer treatment to Palestinians on board said injured in recent clashes; smaller boats remain within permitted fishing zone-By AFP and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

The Israeli navy stopped and seized control of a boat carrying demonstrators as it tried to leave the Gaza fishing zone on Tuesday in defiance of Israel’s blockade of the coastal enclave.“The IDF seized a Palestinian boat carrying some 17 sailors who broke the sea blockade,” the navy said. “The seizure was carried out without incident.”The navy said after it had been searched, the boat would be towed to port in the Israeli city of Ashdod.Organizers had said the vessel was carrying wounded Gazans seeking treatment, and the IDF said medics were waiting to treat the sick or injured on board if necessary.“Afterwards the Palestinians will be returned to Gaza,” the army said. The boat was initially accompanied by a group of smaller vessels as it departed from the fishermen’s port in Gaza City.“Israeli forces surrounded it and intercepted it,” Salah Abdul Atti, one of the organizers, told AFP.Communications had been lost with the boat for more than 30 minutes, he added.Israel maintains a security blockade on Gaza to prevent Hamas, the Islamist terror group which rules the Strip and seeks to destroy Israel, from importing weaponry.Gazan fisherman are permitted by Israel to sail 16 kilometers (10 miles) off the coast.A Gaza advocacy website said that only one vessel, a fishing boat called Al-Hurriyah (Liberty), would attempt to sail from Gaza to an undisclosed destination. The vessel was said to carry Palestinians who were either injured and seeking treatment or wanted to study abroad.“Protest organizers have warned potential passengers it is likely the Al-Hurriyah will be attacked by the Israeli navy and they could be arrested as well. Still, [wheelchair bound Abdul Menim] Aabed and others are lining up to register for this first attempted voyage or for others that will follow,” the website said. The attempt to break the blockade was timed to mark eight years since the Mavi Marmara, a boat owned by a Turkish group, sought to break the blockade and was boarded by Israeli troops. Nine Turkish citizens were killed in the ensuing melee between IDF soldiers and armed protesters. The boarding of the Al-Hurriyah took place as several barrages of rockets and dozens of mortar shells were being fired from Gaza into Israel, and the IDF struck targets in the Gaza Strip in retaliation.Tuesday’s “reverse flotilla” was slammed by US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Jason Greenblatt. In a series of early morning tweets, Greenblatt condemned Hamas, which has ruled the Strip since 2007, for what he termed “deadly theatrics” that needlessly imperil the lives of innocent civilians.“Shame on all involved in inciting the so called ‘reverse flotilla’ today. Hamas treats this like a play being acted out for a live media audience. But these are real lives Hamas is cynically risking in a grim bid to hold on to power,” Greenblatt wrote.Shame on all involved in inciting the so called “reverse flotilla” today. Israel destroys ‘unique’ Hamas tunnel extending into Israel via Egypt-Army strikes in Gaza seal off tunnel -- intended for both smuggling and attacks according to IDF -- that reached 900 meters into Israel-By TOI staff    -MAY 29,18

The Israeli army on Tuesday afternoon struck what it said was a Hamas tunnel in the Gaza Strip that extended hundreds of meters into Egyptian and Israeli territory. The IDF said the U-shaped attack tunnel destroyed near Rafah and the Kerem Shalom border crossing was still under construction and not yet usable. The military said the tunnel crossed from Gaza into Egypt and from there into southern Israel, and was intended both for smuggling weapons and for attacks against Israel. Its full length was around 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), the army said, and the segment inside Israeli territory was 900 meters (half a mile) long. The military discovered the tunnel in the past two weeks, an army spokesperson said. The army called the tunnel’s design “unique.”“This is a very long tunnel,” a source told the Ynet news site. “It also had exit shafts on the Egyptian side. The tunnel was dealt with using airstrikes [in Gaza], and in the coming hours will also be taken care of on our side to neutralize it entirely.”Israeli officials reportedly informed Egyptian counterparts of the planned strike on the tunnel, according to Hebrew-language media. It was not clear if Israeli strikes on the tunnel included action over the border in Egypt. The destruction of the tunnels came as Israeli planes pounded Gaza in response to a morning barrage of mortar fire, including one shell that landed in a kindergarten playground shortly before children were due to arrive. The IDF said it struck over 35 terror targets in Gaza throughout the day, belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. These included weapons caches, naval targets and terror headquarters, the IDF said.Hamas identified one of the targets as a training facility. Some 28 mortar shells and rockets were fired into Israel by Palestinian terror groups Tuesday morning, and media reported dozens more in the afternoon following the strikes.Three Israeli soldiers were lightly injured from shrapnel in the afternoon attacks. The military said a total of 25 projectiles had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. The morning attacks were mounted by the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, apparently in revenge for the IDF killing three of its members in a cross-border exchange earlier in the week.In a statement, Islamic Jihad described its assault as “a blessed response of the resistance,” adding, “our people’s blood is not cheap.”The Israeli military, however, ultimately blamed the barrages on the Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, saying the barrages were the result of the organization’s “failures” to successfully attack Israel during the recent riots along the border. There was no claim of responsibility for the afternoon barrage. As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the military had launched a “massive and forceful” retaliatory attack.Defense officials reportedly said the next 24 hours would be “intense” amid the worst escalation on the Gaza border since the 2014 war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. The army evacuated the Zikim beach near Gaza, while local authorities in the region told residents to stay near their bomb shelters in the coming hours.“Israel views the attacks on it and on its communities by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the Gaza Strip with great severity,” Netanyahu said earlier, during a conference in the northern Galilee region, ahead of urgent security consultations set to take place later in the day.“The IDF will retaliate with great force to these attacks,” the prime minister added. “Israel will make anyone trying to harm it pay a heavy price, and we view Hamas as responsible for preventing such attacks against us.”Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman earlier called a “special situational assessment” at army’s Tel Aviv headquarters with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and other senior figures from Israel’s security services, his office said.Judah Ari Gross and Michael Bachner contributed to this report.

Fresh barrage of missiles fired from Gaza; several intercepted-At least six new rounds of warning sirens go off in communities near border; two rockets said to land near Kibbutz Re'im-By Michael Bachner and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

Projectiles were fired from Gaza into southern Israel Tuesday afternoon in a fresh salvo of cross-border fire amid the most intense fighting seen in the region in years. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the afternoon barrage.Sirens blared in Israeli communities in the border region at least six times starting around 3 p.m., sending residents fleeing for shelter hours after having been given the all-clear following a morning volley.Sirens were reported as far away as the Ashkelon industrial zone and Ofakim, dozens of kilometers from the Strip, indicating the projectiles being fired were longer range than the mortar rounds shot earlier in the day. There was no immediate word on how many rockets or mortar rounds were fired. The military said a total of 25 rockets had been knocked down by Iron Dome missile defense batteries as of 4 p.m., though the tally was not official. At least two projectiles in the afternoon barrage landed near Kibbutz Re’im, according to emergency response officials. There were no reports of injuries. One man was lightly injured by shrapnel in the morning. The fire came as Israeli planes pounded Gaza, hitting more than 30 terrorist positions in the Strip in response to the morning’s mortar fire, with one of the targets being a smuggling tunnel in Rafah. The army said the tunnel that was destroyed near Rafah extended from Egypt through Gaza to Israel. It was still being built and was not yet usable. Earlier, the Hamas terror group identified one of the targets as its training facility.Defense officials reportedly said the next 24 hours would be “intense” amid the worst escalation on the Gaza border since the 2014 war, known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. The army evacuated the nearby Zikim beach, while local authorities in the region told residents to stay near their bomb shelters in the coming hours. The afternoon’s incoming projectiles were more long range than the more than two dozen mortar shells launched from Gaza which hit southern Israel in the morning, triggering rocket alarms in the Lachish region dozens of kilometers from Gaza. There was no claim of responsibility for the fresh barrage. The morning volley was claimed by Islamic Jihad as revenge for an Israeli shelling that killed three members of the terror group earlier this week amid already high tensions along the border.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive. He said both Hamas and Islamic Jihad would be held responsible.A Hamas spokesperson commented that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people, and this does not come out of weakness,” he said.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said Egypt was in talks with Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Israel in an effort to prevent a large-scale confrontation.“Israel views the attacks on it and on its communities by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the Gaza Strip with great severity,” Netanyahu said earlier, during a conference in the northern Galilee region, ahead of urgent security consultations set to take place later in the day.“The IDF will retaliate with great force to these attacks,” the prime minister added. “Israel will make anyone trying to harm it pay a heavy price, and we view Hamas as responsible for preventing such attacks against us.”As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman earlier called a “special situational assessment” at army’s Tel Aviv headquarters with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and other senior figures from Israel’s security services, his office said.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

Behind Islamic Jihad’s barrage of attacks on Israel, the hand of Iran-It is hard to believe that the Gaza terror group would have opened fire on Israeli citizens, potentially pushing the Strip toward war, without the support of its Iranian sponsors-By Avi Issacharoff-MAY 29,18

Tuesday morning’s barrages of mortar shells and rockets into southern Israel were quickly rumored in Gaza to be the work of the Islamic Jihad terror group. And hours after more than two dozen mortar shells hit Israel, the IDF carried out retaliatory strikes that were mainly directed at Islamic Jihad’s military wing.Islamic Jihad’s role indicates we are witnessing an attempt by Iran to spark a war on the southern border. And if the deterioration of the situation is not halted in the very near future, the attempt may prove successful. Already we have seen an attack on Israeli targets unprecedented since 2014’s Protective Edge conflict, with a consequent Israeli response against targets in Gaza. The Islamic Jihad barrages were ostensibly aimed at avenging Israel’s reported killing of three of its operatives, who were attempting an attack, earlier this week in the Rafah area. That was the immediate pretext. But the nature and scale of the Islamic Jihad response — heavy fire at civilian targets in Israel — indicates that revenge was not the only motivation. It is possible that this is at root an Iranian move, seeking to have Israel pay a price in the south for targeting Iran in the north — across the border in Syria. After all, it is hard to believe that Islamic Jihad, a smaller ally-rival of Hamas which is financed and trained primarily by the Iranians, would have initiated this kind of action, with its dramatic consequences for Gaza, without Tehran’s approval.Israel has been making clear of late that it operates freely in Syria against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps there; it may well be that there are those in Tehran who want to counter that via the Gaza Strip, or at least to stir up Israel’s southern border and therefore distract Israel’s attention from the north.Where does Hamas, the terror group that rules Gaza, fit into this? Hamas was quick to welcome the barrages fired at Israel. And the IDF has also targeted several Hamas facilities. Yet the fact remains that Hamas’s activities in recent months indicate that it is not particularly interested in an escalation, and Israel recognizes this.Hamas has put the brakes on a potential deterioration into all-out conflict more than once of late, even after its forces were hit. The most obvious recent example of this was on May 14, the day the US inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem, Nakba Day, when more than 60 Gazans were killed in violent clashes with Israel at the Gaza border. Hamas later acknowledged that almost all of the fatalities were its members. Yet it ordered the dispersal of the protests at the border that evening, to avoid a potential descent into war.Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Ismael Haniyeh have been engaged in various secretive contacts of late — intermittently involving Egypt and, separately Qatar — intended to yield understandings for a long-term Hamas-Israel ceasefire. Evidently, however, there are other players — Islamic Jihad and Iran — who want to heat things up.Islamic Jihad’s attacks on Israel are also embarrassing Hamas in the eyes of the Gaza public. Hamas knows that if its forces do not prevent a continuation of Islamic Jihad fire — whether through the use of force, or threats, or both — there is a considerable likelihood that Gaza will once again find itself at war with Israel. But if Hamas does intervene against Islamic Jihad, its image as the “resistance” against Israel will be undermined. It would risk becoming perceived as another kind of “Palestinian Authority,” collaborating with the Zionist enemy in return for quiet and/or economic benefit.

Israeli planes strike dozens of Gaza targets after mortar barrage-Israel says tunnel hit along with 'terror targets'; Hamas reports training facility bombarded; Palestinian official reportedly says terror groups won't retaliate if nobody killed-By Michael Bachner and TOI staff-MAY 29,18

The Israeli military struck targets in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday in response to an early morning barrage of at least 28 mortar shells from Gaza at communities in southern Israel, with the Hamas terror group identifying one of the targets as its training facility. The military said 35 targets were struck by warplanes operating over the Strip.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the military struck a tunnel as well as “terror targets” in a “massive and strong” retaliatory attack.“Hamas and Islamic Jihad are paying the price and we’ve only starting settling accounts,” he said in a tweet. The strikes came shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had vowed to respond “with great force” to the mortar shells, one of which landed just outside a kindergarten less than an hour before children were due to arrive. The military said the tunnel that was struck extended from Rafah in Egypt through Gaza and into Israel. They described it as a “unique” attack tunnel.A Hamas spokesperson declared that “Israel will fail in the attempt to change the rules of the conflict and set a new equation on the ground.“The resistance in the Gaza Strip reserves its right to react or remain silent in accordance with the interest of our people, and this does not come out of weakness,” he said.A Palestinian official in Gaza cited by Haaretz said that terror groups were likely to refrain from responding to the Israeli strikes if there were no fatalities. Health officials 'cautiously optimistic' on Ebola response-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

GENEVA — The World Health Organization said Tuesday it is "cautiously optimistic" about efforts to curb the spread of Ebola in an urban area in Congo, although the lethal virus is still reported in at least two remote areas. There have been 35 confirmed cases, including 12 deaths. The U.N. health agency and partners have vaccinated more than 400 people with an experimental Ebola vaccine, the first time it has been used in an emerging outbreak.WHO emergencies chief Peter Salama told reporters that the response has gone "quite smoothly" and that the agency's first priority had been to stop Ebola's spread in Mbandaka, a city of more than 1 million that sits on a river described as a "highway" connecting it to other regions."We can't conclude we have safeguarded the city of Mbandaka, but so far there hasn't been an explosive increase in cases ... We have reason to be cautiously optimistic," Salama said.He added that the next stage of the vaccination strategy would focus on the remote regions of Iboko and Bikoro, where most of the cases have been reported.Salama also said officials were planning to test five unlicensed drugs for Ebola, pending Congo's approval. Two of the drugs were previously used in past Ebola outbreaks, but the three remaining medicines have mostly been tested in animals. Salama said using the drugs in Congo's basic health clinics would be challenging since some involve intravenous infusions and require daily monitoring of kidney and liver functions.Bikoro has had no electricity and no functioning lab, officials said, and outbreak response efforts in Iboko have required the establishment of helicopter landing sites and electricity.Salama said WHO has been focused on three separate chains of Ebola transmission connected to a funeral, a church gathering and a visit to a health centre in Bikoro. He said officials were trying to monitor about 900 contacts of Ebola cases but couldn't say how many of the newly reported cases are coming from previously identified contacts.Having new cases arise from people not already under observation suggests the virus could be spreading unchecked in certain areas."This is a work in progress," Salama said, adding that the "overwhelming majority" of contacts were being followed up on a daily basis and that vaccination was providing further reassurance the epidemic might soon be controlled.___This version corrects to say only 12 deaths have been confirmed as Ebola. The Associated Press.

23  And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Vertical plume of ash explodes from Hawaii volcano-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

HONOLULU (Reuters) - A small explosion of ash erupted from the summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano early on Tuesday morning in a vertical plume some 15,000 feet (4,600 meters) high, the U.S. Geological Survey said, the latest outburst in a month of volcanic activity. The agency warned that ash was drifting northwest and liable to dust anyone in the summit area. Hundreds of people have been ordered to leave the vicinity of the biggest eruption cycle in a century of one of the world's most active volcanoes.Multiple fissures continue to spew up hot lava flows, which have blocked roads and damaged dozens of buildings on Hawaii's Big Island. [nL2N1SX09Z]-One fountain of lava rose more than 200 feet (60 meters) at times on Monday, the Geological Survey said.Officials are on high alert for occasional earthquakes, though none have been big enough so far to trigger a tsunami.Lava has engulfed the heads of two wells that tap into steam and gas deep in the Earth's core at the 38-megawatt Puna Geothermal Venture. Its operator, Israeli-controlled Ormat Technologies Inc, said it had not been able to assess the damage. [nL2N1SX0DV]-So far no deaths have been blamed on the eruption, though a man's leg was shattered when he was hit by a spatter of super-dense lava. [nL2N1SR00X] Residents fear the wells may be explosive. Officials have said the power plant is safe but lava has never engulfed a geothermal plant anywhere in the world, creating a measure of uncertainty.Contingency plans have been made for a possible helicopter evacuation of up to 1,000 residents in a coastal area south of the fissures should their last exit route, be blocked by lava or become unsafe due to gaping cracks, County of Hawaii officials said. [nL2N1SW08J]-At least 82 homes have been destroyed in the southeastern corner of Big Island and about 2,000 people have been ordered evacuated since Kilauea began erupting on May 3.(Reporting by Jolyn Rosa; writing and additional reporting by Jonathan Allen; Editing by Scott Malone and Jonathan Oatis)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Flooded residents in Maryland wonder about rebuilding-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-David Mcfadden,-May 29, 2018

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) -- After yet another devastating flash flood ripped apart their historic Maryland mill town, hundreds of residents and business owners are again asking themselves: Should I stay or should I go? Some people in picturesque Ellicott City — established in 1772 as a Patapsco River mill town surrounded by hills — say they're determined to rebuild after Sunday's devastation. Their hope: to pull together as a community again after the second terrible flood deluged their downtown in less than two years.Simon Cortes, owner of La Palapa Grill & Cantina, said Monday it's "a horrible time," and his business took on about a foot (30 centimeters) of water. But he says the town has been through it all before, and he'll do his part to spur another revival."I feel like it's our duty to make sure that we rebuild and open back up," said Cortes, whose restaurant is right by the spot where a 39-year-old man was swept away by Sunday's raging floodwaters.Others are stretched to the breaking point by the floods, which tore up streets and swept away dozens of cars in the quaint downtown of historic 18th and 19th century buildings, which sit in a ravine about 13 miles (20 kilometers) west of Baltimore. Now the locals face yet another massive cleanup, serious economic losses and a daunting comeback.Sunday's torrential rains came just as the town seemed to come back stronger than ever from a dreadful July 2016 flash flood that killed two people.Getting flood insurance around old Ellicott City was a pricy proposition before. Now, people don't even want to think about how much it might cost, on top of the debts they're still paying from the last time their homes and businesses were destroyed.Nathan Sowers, owner of the River House Pizza Co., an outdoor eatery in the old mill town's business district, said that after all the hard work rebuilding from the 2016 flood, he's feeling a bit overwhelmed at attempting yet another comeback."We'll see. It takes a lot of money and a lot of time, a lot of energy. We'll just have to assess it," he said, speaking near a bridge where several crushed cars were swept into a muddy tributary's banks. But Sowers said he saw other hard-hit locals laughing and joking about their troubles first thing Monday morning — a good sign the Maryland town will launch yet another rebirth. But the bad news just kept coming following the torrential rains: On Tuesday morning, county authorities issued what they called a "precautionary health alert" after a sewage main broke about 2 miles (3 kilometers) away from Ellicott City's historic main street. The sewage overflow, which was first noticed early Monday, has been stopped. But as much as 500,000 gallons of sewage had already spilled and residents were being told to stay away from the affected area.People were also heartbroken that 39-year-old Eddison Hermond of Severn, Maryland remains missing. He was last seen trying to help a woman rescue her cat behind a restaurant while seething brown waters surged through the downtown.Howard County Police Chief Gary Gardner said the National Guard member and U.S. Air Force veteran had been with a group at the La Palapa Grill & Cantina when a woman approached, desperately trying to rescue her pet just outside."He, along with some other folks, went back to assist her and unfortunately during that effort they saw him go under water," Gardner told reporters.Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman said his immediate priorities are finding Hermond and assessing the condition of damaged buildings that housed shops, restaurants and families."If you look at the devastation and the damage, I would certainly say it's worse than 2016," Kittleman said. "We've had areas that were not even damaged at all two years ago terribly damaged this time."Ellicott City certainly got the worst of it. But torrential rains led to such bad flooding in Baltimore County, Baltimore City and the capital of Annapolis that Gov. Larry Hogan declared a statewide emergency to better coordinate support and assistance.Mike Muccilli, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said it was too early to make comparisons between the two devastating floods. In the July 2016 storm, Ellicott City received 6.6 inches (17 centimeters) of rain over a two- to three-hour period. On Sunday, the community received some 8 inches (20.32 centimeters) of rain over a six-hour period, most of it in an intense, three-hour period, Muccilli said."In a normal heavy rain ... you wouldn't see this amount of flooding, where you see cars floating down the road," the meteorologist said. "This was a true flash flood."___Associated Press writer Brian Witte in Annapolis, Maryland, contributed to this report.___Follow McFadden on Twitter: https://twitter.com/dmcfadd

Cyber crooks claim to hit two big Canadian banks-[Reuters]-By Matt Scuffham-TOI-YAHOONEWS-May 28, 2018

TORONTO (Reuters) - Bank of Montreal and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce said on Monday that cyber attackers may have stolen the data of nearly 90,000 customers in what appeared to be the first significant assault on financial institutions in the country.Bank of Montreal , Canada's fourth biggest lender, said on Monday it was contacted by fraudsters on Sunday who claimed they were in possession of the personal and financial information of a limited number of the bank's customers.A spokesman for the bank said it believed that less than 50,000 of the bank's 8 million customers across Canada were hacked. He declined to say if any customers lost money as a result of the attack. The fraudsters had threatened to make the data public, the spokesman said, adding that the bank was working with the authorities and conducting a thorough investigation.Bank of Montreal said it believed the attack originated from outside the country and was confident the exposures that led to the theft of customer data had been closed off.Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce , Canada's fifth biggest lender, said fraudsters contacted the lender on Sunday claiming they had electronically stolen personal and account information of 40,000 customers of its Simplii direct banking brand.CIBC said it has not yet confirmed the cyber breach but is taking the claim seriously. CIBC said customers at its main banking division were not affected. Both banks said they were contacting customers and advising them to monitor their accounts and report any suspicious activity.Other Canadian banks said they had not been affected.Shares in BMO were down 0.3 percent and CIBC was off 0.3 percent.Canada's six biggest banks have been collaborating along with the Bank of Canada to enhance their defenses against cyber attacks. The Bank of Canada said earlier this month that some attacks would inevitably succeed but it has recovery mechanisms in place to limit the damage.Cyber attacks are increasingly common. Last year, credit monitoring firm Equifax said information on about 146.6 million names, 146.6 million dates of birth, 145.5 million U.S. social security numbers, 99 million addresses and 209,000 payment card numbers and expiration dates, were stolen in a cyber attack.(Reporting by Matt Scuffham; Editing by Jeffrey Benkoe)

Four years on, MH370 families await report as search ends for missing plane-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Rozanna Latiff-May 29, 2018

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's new government has promised to release a long-awaited report into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 as a privately funded underwater search ended on Tuesday.Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, vanished enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, becoming one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries. The government of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said last week that U.S. seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity, which had scoured the southern Indian Ocean for the aircraft since January, would end its hunt on Tuesday. The previous administration of Najib Razak, who was defeated in a stunning election upset on May 9, had promised up to $70 million to the Texas-based firm if it found the plane within 90 days.Malaysia's transport minister, Anthony Loke, said a full report into MH370's disappearance would be published in the near future, but he did not give a date."I can assure you the final report will be published with full disclosure. There will not be any edits, or anything hidden," he told reporters late on Monday.Asked whether the report would refer to controversial elements of the MH370 case, he said: "To me, whatever elements, we will just publish it".Last year, Australian authorities said the MH370 captain had flown a route on his home simulator six weeks before the disappearance that was "initially similar" to the course actually taken by the aircraft.Peter Foley, who led the Australian Transport Safety Bureau's search efforts, told an Australian Senate hearing "control inputs" had been made to fly the airliner off course, but he could not say if one of the pilots had done so.Malaysian investigators said in 2015 they had found nothing suspicious in the financial, medical or personal histories of the pilots or crew.FAMILIES CALL FOR REVIEW-The decision to engage Ocean Infinity came after Australia, China and Malaysia ended a fruitless A$200-million ($159 million) search across a 120,000 square-kilometer (46,332 square mile) expanse of the Indian Ocean last year. This was despite investigators calling for the target area to be extended north by 25,000 square kilometers (9653 square miles).Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Plunkett said on Tuesday their team had searched more than 112,000 square kilometers (43,243 square miles) of ocean floor in a little over three months. While the outcome was "extremely disappointing", Plunkett hoped the company would be able to offer its services again in a future search for the airliner.Asked if China would consider further funding for the search, or whether search organizations had asked China for more resources, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China had always maintained close communication with the relevant parties."We will continue to maintain communication with relevant parties," Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing in Beijing.Voice 370, a group representing the relatives of those aboard the flight, has pressed the new Malaysian government to review all matters related to MH370, including "any possible falsification or elimination of records related to MH370 and its maintenance".Calvin Shim, whose wife was a crew member on the plane, said he was concerned that the accident report would not include key information such as the plane's full cargo manifest and the results of a separate investigation by Malaysian police."We know that this issue is already four years old and a lot of people involved want closure," he said."These four years have not been fun to us, the families."Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the search had tested the limits of technology and capacity of experts and people at sea.It would only resume if there was "credible evidence which identifies a specific location of the missing aircraft"."We will always remain hopeful that one day the aircraft will be located," McCormack's office said in a statement. The only confirmed traces of the plane have been three wing fragments found washed up on Indian Ocean coasts.(Reporting by Rozanna Latiff; Additional reporting by Jamie Freed in SINGAPORE, Michael Martina in BEIJING and Colin Packham in SYDNEY; Editing by Darren Schuettler)

Gunman reportedly shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ kills three in Belgian city-Investigators look at possible terror motive after two police officers and a passerby shot dead in eastern city of Liege; attacker also killed-By Sue Surkes and AFP-TOI-MAY 29,18

A gunman in the eastern Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday shot dead three people — two police officers and a passerby in a vehicle — before he was killed by elite officers.Prosecutors said the attacker killed the police officers with their own firearms. The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. near a high school on a major street in the city, which is around 90 kilometers (55 miles) east of Brussels, close to the German border. The French-language Belgian news site LaLibre reported that the man had shouted “Allahu akbar” before police shot him.The file has been passed to the federal prosecutor responsible for terrorism, one person at the Liege federal prosecutor’s office, spokesman Eric Van Der Sypt, said.“There are elements that go in the direction of a terrorist act,” he was quoted by the French language RTL news site as saying. But Catherine Collignon, another spokeswoman for the same office, told the AFP news agency that the attacker’s motive was not immediately clear. “We don’t know anything yet,” she said.Media reports said the gunman shot dead two police officers at a cafe before fleeing to the Lycee Waha school, where he took a cleaning lady hostage.Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said Belgium’s Federal Crisis Center was monitoring the situation.???? We are in the process of establishing an overview of exactly what happened,” Jambon wrote on Twitter. The crisis center said a security cordon had been set up around the area and urged people to stay away.Belgium has been on high alert since the smashing of a terror cell in the town of Verviers in January 2015 that was planning an attack on police. The Verviers cell also had links to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the mastermind of the November 2015 Islamic State attacks on Paris that killed 130 people.Belgium further raised its terror alert level after the Paris attack, and placed the capital Brussels on lockdown for a week.Belgium was then hit by its own IS suicide attacks on Brussels airport and a metro station that killed 32 people. In March, Belgian police arrested eight people in Brussels in counter-terror raids as part of an investigation into what one source said appeared to be preparations for an attack.

Hezbollah men, including commander, said killed in Syria strike blamed on Israel-Attack reportedly wrecks operational coordination center near Al-Qusayr, close to where munitions depot belonging to group was destroyed in a raid on Thursday-By TOI staff-MAY 29,18

A senior commander and other members of the Iranian-backed, Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror group were killed overnight in an Israeli airstrike, Sky’s Arabic-language channel reported Tuesday. The strikes reportedly took place near the Syrian town of Al-Qusayr in the Homs district, close to the Lebanese border. There was no Israeli comment on the report. It cited sources saying the strikes destroyed a coordination center for operations and set fire to various places. On Thursday, airstrikes attributed to the IDF destroyed Hezbollah munitions depots at the al-Qusayr airbase, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.“Six missiles were fired at the Daba’a military airport and surrounding area in the western sector of Homs province, targeting Lebanese Hezbollah weapons warehouses,” Rami Abd el-Rahman, director of the Observatory, told AFP, adding, “The missiles would have been fired by Israel.”Daba’a is another name for the al-Qusayr airbase, and the surrounding area is known to be a stronghold for Hezbollah and Iran-backed militias. It was also reportedly struck by Israel in a raid during an exchange with Syrian and Iranian forces on May 10.The raid came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s al-Quds Force launched 32 rockets at Israel’s forward defensive line on the Golan Heights border.Israel and Iran have been waging a quiet war in Syria for several years.Israel maintains that it will take military action to stop Tehran from entrenching itself in Syria. On Monday, the Haaretz newspaper reported that Russia was considering trying to keep Iranian forces and their allies away from the border, fearing that repeated Israeli strikes could undermine Syrian President Bashar Assad’s grip on the country.According to the report, Russia decided to work on a deal to remove the Iranian troops following the heavy Israeli attack on Iranian targets in Syria on May 10.Israel has acknowledged carrying out several aerial raids on Iranian targets in Syria, and suspected of carrying out several more.Tensions between Israel and Iran in Syria have stepped up considerably in recent months, beginning in February when an Iranian drone carrying explosives was flown from the T-4 air base in central Syria into Israeli airspace and was shot down by an IAF helicopter.Israel conducted a series of reprisal raids, first against the air base and then against Syrian air defenses, which had fired on the Israeli jets and shot down one F-16.Much of the Iranian infrastructure is set up on Syrian bases and Israel has also frequently hit Syrian air defenses during strikes on Iranian targets.

One suspect in Mississauga, Ont., restaurant explosion may be female, police say-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — One of two suspects wanted in connection with an explosion that injured 15 people at a restaurant west of Toronto may be a woman, contrary to earlier reports, police said Tuesday.Investigators originally said both suspects seen on video entering the Bombay Bhel restaurant in Mississauga, Ont., last week were men, but new video evidence and witness input suggests at least one of the suspects could be female, said Peel regional police Supt. Rob Ryan.Police have finished processing the scene of the blast and are now analysing a collection of evidence that includes fingerprints, DNA, surveillance video, interviews with people present at the restaurant that night and remnants of the explosive device itself, Ryan said."Investigators spent hundreds of hours over the weekend combing the scene for every fine detail that might help them to understand what happened that night," he said."What led the two suspects to detonate this device is still not clear," he added. "We do not have clear motive and no one has claimed responsibility."The suspects were in and out of the restaurant in a short amount of time, and fled the scene on foot before their homemade explosive device detonated, police said.Investigators have traced the suspects' escape route with drones and dogs, and believe the pair headed eastward from Bombay Bhel, cutting through a construction site and then a residential subdivision, Ryan said.Police have said they think the suspects ultimately got into a vehicle.Ryan said assistance from the community would be "critical" to the investigation, and urged anyone with information to contact police, whether they witnessed any part of what happened the night of the bombing, or know something about the suspects."We know there are people out there who know who did this and it's time for them to do the right thing and come forward," Ryan said.Ryan said investigators still don't know the motive for the attack, but said the suspects would be charged with attempted murder, among other offences, if caught. The fifteen people injured in the explosion — three of them critically — have all since been treated and released from hospital, police said.Peter Goffin , The Canadian Press.

Syrian army ready for southern battle, pro-Assad commander says-[Reuters]-By Laila Bassam and Tom Perry-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian army has completed preparations for an imminent offensive against rebel-held areas in southwestern Syria, a non-Syrian commander in a military alliance that backs Damascus said on Tuesday, raising the prospect of a major new escalation. However, a rebel commander in the Deraa region of the southwest told Reuters there was no sign of mobilization for such an assault and accused Damascus of waging psychological warfare. Nevertheless, rebels had prepared defenses, he said. The rebel-held southwest has come into focus after the Syrian government, backed militarily by Iran and Russia, crushed the last besieged rebel enclaves near Damascus and north of the city of Homs. Damascus has vowed to recover the whole country. The southwest is of concern to the United States, which last year brokered a "de-escalation" deal with Jordan and President Bashar al-Assad's Russian allies, which has largely contained the war near the frontier with Israel. The United States warned on Saturday it would take "firm and appropriate measures" in response to any violations of the ceasefire in that area. While Assad is militarily unassailable in the Syrian conflict, swathes of territory at the frontiers with Iraq, Turkey and Jordan and Israel remain outside his control. The role of outside powers in these areas complicates further gains by Damascus. The pro-Assad commander, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Syrian army's preparations for the assault were complete. "The Syrian army will wage all the battles and has now become strong and capable," the commander said.Israel wants Iran-backed forces removed from areas near its frontier - and from Syria in general. Iran-backed Shi'ite militias, often spearheaded by Lebanon's Hezbollah, have played a critical role fighting in support of Assad.Russia said on Monday that only Syrian army troops should be at the southern border with Jordan and Israel. On Tuesday, its foreign ministry said Russia, the United States and Jordan had agreed to meet about the "de-escalation" zone, RIA news agency reported.-"PSYCHOLOGICAL WAR"-An article published in the pro-Damascus al-Watan newspaper said signs "on the horizon" indicated the southern battle was near as "final touches" were put in place. But the rebel commander, Colonel Nassim Abu Arra of the Youth of Sunna Forces, told Reuters there was no sign of an imminent attack."So far there are no indications of that. I am speaking from a position on the frontlines," he said in a telephone interview. "But there are rumors, a psychological war," he said.In the last week, he said several military convoys had left government-held parts of Deraa city heading north, saying he believed these to be Iran-backed forces being evacuated from the region. They had not been replaced, he added. His faction was keeping the United States and Jordan abreast of the situation on the ground. "We are taking from them reassurances that the southern region is subjected to the de-escalation agreement and ceasefire," he said. But his fighters had still prepared defenses. "I assure you the opposition forces have taken a number of measures ... including digging trenches and tunnels to prevent the regime from launching any attack," he said.(This version of the story corrects the name of rebel commander in paragraph 11)(Reporting by Laila Bassam and Tom Perry and Polina Ivanova in Moscow; Writing by Tom Perry; Editing by Richard Balmforth, Larry King)

Japan navy spots suspected China ship next to NKorea tanker-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 29, 2018

TOKYO — Japan's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that a Japanese navy surveillance aircraft has spotted a suspected Chinese-flagged ship apparently transferring fuel to a North Korean tanker on the open seas.A ministry statement said that the two vessels were suspected of engaging in offshore ship-to-ship transfers banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions. It said Japan has informed the U.N. Security Council of the May 19 sighting of the North Korean-flagged tanker, Ji Song 6, moored alongside the ship carrying a flag believed to be Chinese in open seas in the East China Sea.Four photos taken by the Maritime Self- Defence Force were released, including two showing the ships alongside each other, connected by a hose. The U.N. has blacklisted the North Korean tanker. The disclosure of the alleged offshore transfer comes as preparations for an expected summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to be in their final stages.U.N. sanctions on the North limit energy trade and ban offshore transfers of goods to North Korean ships as part of international efforts to pressure Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear weapons.Japan and the U.S. have said the sanctions must be enforced strictly to be effective, and asked China in particular to tighten enforcement. The Associated Press.

Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:(WORLD LEADER) for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM (6006006)OR(60020202006)(SOME KIND OF NUMBER IMPLANTED IN THE MICROCHIP THAT TELLS THE WORLD DICTATOR AND THE NEW WORLD ORDER THAT YOU GIVE YOUR TOTAL ALLIGIENCE TO HIM AND NOT JESUS)(ITS AN ETERNAL DECISION YOU MAKE)(YOU CHOOSE YOUR OWN DESTINY)(YOU TAKE THE DICTATORS NAME OR NUMBER UNDER YOUR SKIN,YOUR DOOMED TO THE LAKE OF FIRE AND TORMENTS FOREVER,NEVER ENDING MEANT ONLY FOR SATAN AND HIS ANGELS,NOT HUMAN BEINGS).OR YOU REFUSE THE MICROCHIP IMPLANT AND GO ON THE SIDE OF KING JESUS AND RULE FOREVER WITH HIM ON EARTH.YOU CHOOSE,ITS YOUR DECISION.

1 KINGS 10:13-14
13  And king Solomon gave unto the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.
14  Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred threescore and six talents of gold,

GENESIS 49:16-17
16  Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.
17  Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.

REVELATION 6:5-6
5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.(A DAYS WAGES FOR A LOAF OF BREAD)

EARTHQUAKES

EZEKIEL 37:7,11-14
7  So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.(POSSIBLE QUAKE BRINGS ISRAEL BACK TO LIFE-SO NOISE AND SHAKING-QUAKES WILL ALSO DESTROY ISRAELS ENEMIES)
11  Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:7-8
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

MARK 13:8
8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:(ETHNIC GROUP AGAINST ETHNIC GROUP) and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places,(DIFFERNT PLACES AT THE SAME TIME) and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Zionist Union leader rejects MK’s proposal of annexing settlement blocs-Pouring cold water on Eitan Cabel's call for his party to 'sober up,' Avi Gabbay dismisses idea of unilateral moves, calls for peace talks-By Jacob Magid and TOI staff-MAY 28,18

The leader of the opposition Zionist Union and the Labor party on Sunday poured cold water on a call by one of his faction‘s veteran MKs for his party to “sober up” and push for the annexation of Israeli settlement blocs in the West Bank.Avi Gabbay said in a TV interview that he was opposed to unilateral moves.“The Labor Party is a democratic party and everyone has the right to express an opinion, but at the end of the day, the party’s path is what determines things and our position is clear: ensuring the state’s security in the long term through separating into two states through a diplomatic arrangement.”“Leaders don’t have to please the public, they have to tell the public what their positions are whether people like it or not,” he added. In an op-ed Friday in the Haaretz newspaper, Eitan Cabel noted Labor’s long-running failure to win elections — the party has led Israel for just six years in the past four decades — and urged his colleagues to “sober up and shake off” their adherence to the land-for-peace paradigm of the Yitzhak Rabin-era Oslo Accords. Only if Labor took “a world view that reflects reality,” he wrote, could it expect the public to return it to power.Israel “cannot wait for the Palestinian side because Abu Mazen [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] has already given up on the two-state solution,” he wrote in the op-ed.On Sunday, Gabbay said that he believed better results could be achieved by negotiating with the Palestinians than by not doing so, and that today, Israel was in the “best position” to negotiate, with Donald Trump in the White House, with the Gulf states wanting a peace deal.“Throughout my life, I’ve negotiated when I was in a strong position and not when I was weak,” said Gabbay, a former CEO of the Bezeq telecommunications giant.Cabel drew widespread criticism from within the party following the publication of his column. On Saturday, the “young guard” of Labor — the main constituent party in the Zionist Union faction —  called on Gabbay, General Secretary Eran Hermoni and party lawmakers to suspend Cabel.Cabel’s proposal would see Israel first define the “settlement blocs” — the heavily populated Jewish areas in the West Bank that are mostly close to the Green Line boundary and that most Israeli leaders believe will remain part of the Jewish state in any future peace deal.He suggested that the blocs must include the settlements in Gush Etzion and the Jordan Valley, the cities of Ma’ale Adumim and Ariel, and the northern West Bank community of Karnei Shomron, which together comprise some 300,000 of the estimated 400,000 Israeli settlers outside Jerusalem. In the remaining, more isolated settlements where some 25 percent of the settlers live (according to Cabel’s numbers), he called for a strict construction freeze. He clarified on Sunday that the move would not include granting Israeli citizenship to the Palestinians living in those blocs.Asked in an Israel Radio interview whether the Palestinians living in the annexed areas would become Israeli citizens, Cabel replied dismissively, “No, of course not. What citizenship, what are you talking about?”He explained, “I’m not urging formal legal annexation, but simply applying Israeli civil law to everyone living in those blocs.” The Palestinians living in those areas “remain an intrinsic part of the blocs, but there’s no Israeli citizenship because you haven’t made the areas an inseparable part of the State of Israel.”Legal experts both in Israel and abroad generally argue that applying Israeli civil law to an area — as Israel did in the parts of the Golan Heights under its control — amounts to a claim to sovereignty over the area. On the Golan, Israel offers citizenship to all non-Israelis living there, and the Druze residents who remained in the territory after the 1967 war have slowly begun to take Israeli citizenship in recent years. His idea, Cabel explained on Sunday, was simply to aid Israeli settlers who “today live under a complicated legal regime that’s partly military rule, partly Israeli law, and even partly Jordanian law. this situation hurts Israeli citizens who must live under military rule, and separates them from the rest of Israel’s citizens and places on them unnecessary restrictions. There’s no inherent reason for applying one law for a resident of the Etzion Bloc [in the West Bank] and another law for a resident of [the coastal city of] Holon.”In his original op-ed, Cabel argued that once annexed, master building plans should be drafted for the blocs in order to legalize unlawfully built homes and allow for the full development of those communities.Cabel argued that annexing the blocs and freezing construction outside them would make plain that “what is beyond the new line will be subject to negotiations between us and the Palestinians.”Traditionally, Labor has argued that while the settlement blocs would remain part of Israel under any future agreement, the government should only apply sovereignty over them in the context of a peace deal.

Israel starts building sea barrier to defend against Gaza attacks-Under- and above-water wall will strip Hamas of another strategic capability, defense minister says-By Stuart Winer and TOI staff-MAY 28,18

Work began Sunday on the construction of a fortified marine wall to prevent terror attacks from the Gaza Strip via the sea, the Defense Ministry said in a statement. The barrier, constructed in the area of Zikim beach, is designed to withstand the battering of the water and to be in use for many years, the ministry said.Construction of the barrier, described by the ministry as an “impregnable breakwater,” is expected to be finished by the end of the year. The statement did not say how much the barrier will cost.It will have three levels: one under the water, then a level of armor stone, known for its durability, and barbed wire along the top. The entire barrier will itself be protected with another wire security fence.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said the barrier would deny the Hamas terror group another strategic capability.“Today we began setting up a sea barrier, the only one of its kind in the world, which will block the possibility of infiltration from Gaza to Israel via the sea,” Liberman said in the statement. “This is an additional setback for Hamas, which has lost another strategic capability that it has invested massive amounts in developing. We will continue to protect the citizens of Israel with might and sophistication.”The decision to build the barrier was prompted by an attack carried out during the 2014 war in Gaza. On July 8, 2014, four Hamas naval commandos swam ashore outside Kibbutz Zikim on Israel’s southern coast. The frogmen brought with them automatic weapons, fragmentation grenades and explosives, the latter of which they used against an Israeli tank, unsuccessfully. Some 40 minutes after they came in from the surf, the Hamas operatives were killed in a combined attack from the sea, ground and air.Initially presented by the military as an unmitigated victory, a leaked IDF review of the incident later showed the army’s response to be slower than previously thought and the Hamas commandos’ attack to be more accomplished than it had seemed. The defensive sea shield comes in addition to work that began last year on a massive barrier Israel is constructing along its land border with the Gaza Strip. The work on the 37-mile (60-kilometer) barrier began in 2016 and is expected to be finished around the end of next year. It will feature an advanced underground protection system that extends dozens of meters below the ground — the army does not reveal the depth — in order to detect and destroy tunnels that attempt to penetrate into Israeli territory, as well as an aboveground metal fence adorned with sensors. The project is expected to cost approximately NIS 3 billion ($833 million), with each kilometer of the underground portion of the barrier costing approximately NIS 41.5 million ($11.5 million). The aboveground fence is significantly cheaper at just NIS 1.5 million ($416,000) per kilometer. The military proposed building this barrier, too, following the 2014 Gaza war.Hamas, a terror group that seeks to destroy Israel, made extensive use of its tunnel networks to send fighters into Israel as well as to move its terrorist operatives and munitions within the Gaza Strip.During the 50-day campaign, the IDF destroyed some 14 tunnels that entered Israeli territory, along with 18 internal tunnels, and depleted Hamas’s weapons stores.Since work began on the land barrier the IDF has destroyed several cross-border tunnels.

Iran can create highly enriched uranium ‘in 2-3 days’ — spokesman-Tehran's Atomic Energy Organization says officials should be prepared for possible resumption of nuclear activities-By Sue Surkes-MAY 28,18

An Iranian nuclear energy official on Sunday repeated a warning from earlier this year that his country is able to create highly enriched uranium in “two to three days.”Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, told Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting that officials should be prepared for a possible resumption of nuclear activities, which were suspended under the nuclear deal that Tehran signed with China, France, Russia, the UK, Germany, and US the European Union in 2015.The Trump administration withdrew from the deal on May 8 and ordered that harsher sanctions be reinstated. It is demanding that Iran stop the enrichment of uranium and end its involvement in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Afghanistan in order to negotiate a new deal.On Friday, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany met — at Iran’s request — to discuss how to move forward.Speaking after that meeting, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said: “We are negotiating… to see if they can provide us with a package which can give Iran the benefits of sanctions lifting.”He added that “practical solutions” were required to address Iran’s concerns over its oil exports, banking flows and foreign investments in the country.“The next step is to find guarantees for that package,” he said.Iranian officials have said they expect such a package to be presented by the end of May.Araghchi said that talks would continue over the next few weeks “particularly at an expert level,” after which Iran would decide whether to stay in the accord.“We got the sense that Europeans, Russia and China… are serious and they recognize that JCPOA’s survival depends on the interests of Iran being respected,” Araghchi added, using the official name for the 2015 deal.In March, Kamalvandi told the Iranian Arabic-language al-Alam TV network, “If we want to enrich uranium to the 20-percent level, we can do it in less than 48 hours.”Uranium enriched above the level of 20 percent is considered highly enriched and could theoretically be used in an atomic weapon, though most nuclear bombs contain uranium enriched to higher than 80%.In his March interview, Kamalvandi said that Iran has developed highly advanced centrifuges that are 24 times more powerful than the previous models used.He said that those machines could be brought back into full service if the 2015 nuclear deal were to collapse.Agencies contributed to this report.

6 Palestinians arrested for waving Hamas flags at Temple Mount-East Jerusalem residents questioned on suspicion of violating public order by calling for solidarity with terror group during Ramadan prayers-By TOI staff-MAY 28,18

Israeli security forces arrested six Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem suspected of waving Hamas flags during Ramadan prayers at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, police said Sunday.According to police, the suspects — ages 26 to 41 — disturbed the public order when they called for support and solidarity with the Gaza-based terror group during Friday afternoon prayers.During overnight raids, security forces seized flags and other materials connected to the incident on the Temple Mount, police said. The suspects were questioned by police and scheduled to appear later in the day before a court.Police said they would continue to ensure Muslims are able to pray respectably at the Jerusalem holy site during Ramadan, but will “respond to any incidents of disturbances or illegal protests.”On Friday, the army said an estimated 87,000 Palestinians from the West Bank traveled to Jerusalem for Ramadan prayers. It also said 8,000 Palestinians prayed at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.Ramadan, which is often a period of heightened tensions, this year comes during the ongoing weekly “March of Return” clashes on the Gaza border.Israel says the violent protests are orchestrated by the Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, and used as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence. The violent demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue. Turnout at the past two weeks’ clashes has been far smaller than previous weeks.According to the Hamas-run health ministry, 119 Palestinians have died since the start of the weekly protests in March, which reached their peak on May 14 when 61 people died.AFP contributed to this report.

Netanyahu: Israel taking action against arms manufacturing in Lebanon-Prime minister affirms Israel's right to self-defense, says battle with Iran in Syria not over-By Stuart Winer and TOI staff-MAY 28,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was taking action against arms manufacturing in Lebanon and threatened continued fighting with Iran Sunday.Netanyahu’s stark threat against Lebanon came after Israeli officials have warned repeatedly that Iran may be trying to manufacture advanced missiles in Lebanon to be used against Israel by the Hezbollah terror group.“We are working to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. At the same time we are working against the establishment of an Iranian military presence against us; to this end we are also operating against the transfer of deadly weapons from Syria to Lebanon or their manufacture in Lebanon. All of these weapons are for use against the State of Israel and it is our right – based on the right of self-defense – to prevent their manufacture or transfer.”Netanyahu did not specify what action was being taken against the arms in Lebanon.Israel has reportedly carried out dozens of airstrikes against targets in Syria, including Iranian military installations, but has mostly refrained from carrying out attacks in Lebanon, where Hezbollah is a major player in the country’s government.Last week, Israeli air force head Amiram Norkin showed visiting generals a picture of an Israeli F-35 stealth fighter flying near Beirut, in what was seen as a direct message to Hezbollah.Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah responded Friday, saying his group did not want a war but would “assuredly win” one.Israeli officials believe that Iran, failing to effectively transfer weapons to Lebanon via the so-called Shia crescent, is looking to manufacture the arms in Lebanon.Israel fought a punishing war with Hezbollah in 2006. Jerusalem believes the group has since re-armed with tens of thousands of missiles that can threaten the whole country, but lacks guided missile technology. In recent weeks, Israeli officials have also warned that Lebanon could suffer if Israel takes action against Hezbollah. The Iran-backed terror group’s political arm has seen its political fortunes rise in recent years, including in a recent election that pit the group as prime minister Sa’ad Hariri’s main rival.Israel has also consistently warned that Iran, while helping its ally Bashar Assad fight a longstanding insurgency in Syria, has been working to establish a powerful military presence in the country.Israel’s airstrikes in recent months on Iran-backed military sites in Syria, which it rarely admits to openly, have led to increased tensions in the northern border region and earlier this month saw a barrage of several dozen missiles at northern Israel, apparently fired by Iranian-backed forces, drawing a massive Israeli reprisal attack.Netanyahu told his cabinet meeting that the fighting with Iran, which has calmed in recent days, was not over.“The Tehran regime is the main factor undermining stability in the Middle East,” Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting at his office in Jerusalem. “The campaign against its aggression has not ended; we are still in it.”The prime minister also revealed he had personally thanked US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for Washington’s firm stance against Iran over its nuclear weapons aspirations and missile program.“I spoke with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and I said to him that I thank him for the approach that the US is presenting against the Iran nuclear deal, and against the Iranian aggression in our region,” Netanyahu said.Last week, Pompeo delivered an address laying out US demands for Iran for sanctions releif in the wake of the nuclear deal pullout, including ending destabilizing activity in the region and making threats against Israel.Pompeo specifically threatened to “crush” Iran proxies such as Hezbollah. On Wednesday, Pompeo told the House Foreign Affairs Committee the Trump administration would work with “as many partners, friends and allies as possible” to address Iran, but his plan has been met with widespread skepticism, especially from other signatories to the nuclear deal.Iranian officials widely dismissed Pompeo’s demands and vowed to push ahead with their military programs. Netanyahu was the one of the few foreign leaders to publicly praise Pompeo’s rhetoric.US President Donald Trump announced May 8 he was pulling the US out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, in which heavy sanctions were lifted from Iran in exchange for Tehran agreeing to dismantle the weapons-capable aspects of its nuclear program.Netanyahu also warned that Israel would not tolerate “aggression against us from the Gaza Strip,” referring to weekend exchanges across the restive Israeli-Gazan border. Two members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were killed Sunday morning when and Israeli tank fired at one of the terror group’s position in the Gaza Strip in response to the planting of an explosive device along the Gaza border. Israel also carried out airstrikes Saturday in Gaza on Hamas terror group positions after Palestinians breached the border fence and entered Israeli territory. It was the latest exchange in ongoing deadly violence at the border which has seen tens of thousands of Palestinians taking part in protests organized by Hamas. Israel says Hamas is using the protests as cover to storm the fence and carry out attacks inside Israeli territory.Netanyahu began his comments by offering his condolences over the death of Ronen Lubarsky, a soldier from an elite army unit who died Saturday, two days after he was critically injured when Palestinians dropped a marble slab on his head from a third-story rooftop during an IDF operation to arrest suspected terrorists in the West Bank.

Islamic State said to dig up graves in Syria in search for Israeli MIAs-Palestinian terror group claims IS aimed to transfer to Israel bodies of soldiers who went missing in Lebanon in 1982-By TOI staff and AP-MAY 28,18

A Palestinian official based in Syria has claimed that Islamic State members and other insurgents excavated graves in a Damascus cemetery looking for the remains of three Israeli soldiers who have been missing in action for 36 years.Their goal was to transfer the bodies to Israel, said Anwar Raja of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command terror organization, although it was not clear in what kind of context or for what purpose. The graves were in the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk, over which Syrian troops regained control last week from members of the IS terror group after a month-long battle, he said.Raja did not say whether the insurgents had found any bodies, nor did he identify the corpses that were sought.Tzvi Feldman, Yehuda Katz and Zachary Baumel are the three soldiers who have been missing in action since the first Lebanon War.In June 1982, 30 Israeli soldiers were killed and five were captured in a battle near the village of Sultan Yacoub in Lebanon, close to the Syrian border. Two of the captured soldiers were returned to Israel alive and the remaining three are still officially missing in action because no conclusive proof has been presented that they died.

New lava flow crosses onto Hawaii geothermal plant property-[Reuters]-By Jolyn Rosa-YAHOONEWS-May 28, 2018

HONOLULU (Reuters) - A broad lava flow crossed onto the property of a Hawaii geothermal power station on Saturday, posing a new hazard as molten rock from the erupting Kilauea volcano bulldozed relentlessly through homes and backyards. The lava crossed onto the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) Saturday evening local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, having destroyed dozens of nearby houses in the past few days.Since Hawaii's Kilauea volcano began a once-in-a-century-scale eruption May 3, authorities have shutdown the plant, removed 60,000 gallons of flammable liquid and deactivated wells that tap into steam and gas deep in the Earth's core.Magma has drained from Kilauea's summit lava lake and flowed around 25 miles (40 km) east underground, bursting out of about two dozen giant cracks or fissures near the plant."The flow from fissures 21 and 7 was widening and advancing," Janet Snyder, a spokeswoman for the County of Hawaii, said in an email on the position of lava heading northeast toward PGV at 12:30 p.m. (6:00 p.m. ET) Hawaii Governor David Ige has said the wells are stable. But lava has never engulfed a geothermal plant anywhere in the world and the potential threat is untested, according to the head of the state's emergency management agency. Local residents fear an explosive emission of deadly hydrogen sulfide and other gases should wells be ruptured.-270 EARTHQUAKES IN ONE DAY-Residents have complained of health hazards from emissions from the plant since it went online in 1989 and PGV has been the target of lawsuits challenging its location on the flank of one of the world's most active volcanoes. The Israeli-owned 38 megawatt plant typically provides around 25 percent of electricity on the Big Island, according to local power utility Hawaii Electric Light.Operator Ormat Technologies Inc last week said there was no above-ground damage to the plant but it would have to wait until the situation stabilized to assess the impact of earthquakes and subterranean lava flows on the wells. In just the past 24 hours there were between 250 and 270 earthquakes at Kilauea's summit, with four explosions on Saturday sending ash to altitudes as high as 12,000-15,000 feet, said Stovall and National Weather Service meteorologist John Bravender.Winds are set to shift on Monday and Tuesday, causing higher concentrations of ash and volcanic smog that will spread west and northwest to affect more populated areas, Bravender said.U.S. Marine Corp and National Guard helicopters are on standby for an air evacuation in the event fissure activity cuts off Highway 130, the last exit route for up to 1,000 coastal residents.Cracks in the highway have yet to emit hydrogen sulfide gas which would indicate magma was rising toward the surface, Stovall said.(Reporting by Jolyn Rosa in Honolulu; additional reporting by Rich McKay in Atlanta; Writing by Gina Cherelus in New York; Editing by Andrew Hay, Marguerita Choy and Susan Thomas)

US Gulf Coast braces for impact as Alberto approaches-[Associated Press]-TAMARA LUSH-YAHOONEWS-May 27, 2018

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Normally packed with vacationers over the Memorial Day weekend, beaches along the eastern U.S. Gulf Coast were largely empty Sunday as a slowly intensifying storm carrying brisk winds and heavy rain approached.Subtropical Storm Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season - prompted Florida, Alabama and Mississippi to launch emergency preparations Saturday. Rough conditions were expected to roil the seas off the eastern and northern Gulf Coast region through Tuesday."These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in a statement.Gusty showers were to begin lashing parts of Florida on Sunday, and authorities were warning of the possibility of flash flooding. The hurricane center said Sunday that a tropical storm warning was in effect from Bonita Beach, Florida, to the Mississippi-Alabama border.Isolated tornadoes were possible across the region on Sunday and Monday.About 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters) of rain are possible along affected areas in eastern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, western Tennessee and the western Florida Panhandle. Isolated areas could see as much as 15 inches (38 centimeters).Under overcast skies and occasional drizzle, several Gulfport, Mississippi, residents lined up to fill 10- and 20-pound (5- and 9-kilogram) bags with sand they will use to block any encroaching floodwater expected as a result of Alberto.Tommy Whitlock said sandbagging has become a usual event in his life since he lives next to a creek."I'm doing this because every time we have a hard rain, it floods at my house," Whitlock said. "We get water from other neighborhoods, and water can get up to a foot deep in some places."Eddy Warner, a retired consultant for a construction company, filled bags while waiting for his nephew to come help transport them home to protect his garage."I'm 65 years old and too old to be doing this," he said, laughing.Alberto — the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season that officially starts June 1 — is expected to strengthen until it reaches the northern Gulf Coast, likely on Monday night. The NWS said waves as high as 18 feet (5.5 meters) could pound the popular Gulf beaches in Baldwin County, Alabama, and northwestern Florida on Monday. A high surf warning was in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday local time.At 11 a.m. EDT Sunday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was about 130 miles (210 kilometers) west-southwest of Tampa, Florida, and moving north at 14 mph (22 kph). The storm had top sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph).A subtropical storm like Alberto has a less defined and cooler center than a tropical storm, and its strongest winds are found farther from its center. Subtropical storms can develop into tropical storms, which in turn can strengthen into hurricanes.A tropical storm warning expired for Cuba's western Pinar del Rio province, where heavy rains could trigger flash floods and mudslides, the National Hurricane Center said. The downpours could dampen Memorial Day, the unofficial start of the summer tourist season along Gulf beaches. Along with heavy rains and high winds come rough seas and a threat of rip currents from Florida to Louisiana that can sweep swimmers out to sea.Tracey Gasper and her 6-year-old son, Chase, traveled to Biloxi Beach from Donaldsonville, Louisiana, for a day of fun in the sun with a group of friends from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The weather had scared off the usual crowds expected for the holiday weekend."It was a 50-50 chance of whether to come down and we decided to chance it," Gasper said.

Egypt suspends YouTube over anti-Islam film-One-month block on video sharing platform comes after years-long effort to suspend site over 'Innocence of Muslims' movie-By Agencies and TOI staff-MAY 28,18

An Egyptian court ordered the suspension for one month of the video-sharing website YouTube and other sites sharing a video found to be insulting to the Muslim Prophet Muhammad. The Supreme Administrative Court’s ruling on Saturday dismissed appeals against a 2013 ruling, including one by the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority that said the ruling’s application is not feasible.Saturday’s verdict is final and cannot be appealed. In 2012, the 14-minute US-made video trailer titled “The Innocence of Muslims,” which appeared on YouTube, triggered protests across the Muslim world, including in Egypt. The 2012 amateurish film depicts the Prophet Muhammad as a buffoon and a pedophile, and sparked a wave of angry anti-American protests across the Middle East in which more than 30 people were killed.Washington sought to keep a lid on the demonstrations by saying the controversial film was made privately with no official backing.US officials said freedom of speech laws prevented them from stopping the production of inflammatory material.Obama administration members initially said the September 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, in which four Americans were killed, was the result of a spontaneous protest against the video. The attack was later determined to have been premeditated. The video can still be found on YouTube with a disclaimer saying it has been found “inappropriate or offensive to some audiences.”It remains unclear whether the ruling will be enforced. As of Saturday afternoon, YouTube was still accessible in Cairo.

Islamic Jihad vows revenge after 3 terror group members said killed by IDF-Gazan organization says it knows 'how to respond to this dangerous escalation' after deadly Israeli tank shelling came in response to bomb planted on border fence-By Judah Ari Gross and TOI staff-MAY 28,18

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group vowed Sunday to avenge the deaths of its members who were killed earlier in the day when Israel struck a post manned by the group in the Gaza Strip. An Israeli tank fired at the Islamic Jihad position in response to an explosive device which had been planted along the Gaza border fence.“We will not give up our duty to the blood of the martyrs shed by the occupation, and we know how to respond to this dangerous escalation,” Islamic Jihad said in a statement.According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, three people were killed in the Israeli strike, near the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. One was itiniaitlly listed as seriously injured but later died of his wounds-The Gazan health ministry identified those killed as Hussein al-Amour, 25, and Abdul Haleem al-Naqa, 28.The Israel Defense Forces said the improvised explosive device, hidden inside a pair of bolt cutters, was placed along the security fence on Saturday.“Its goal was to injure the [IDF] troops operating in the area. It was neutralized this morning by the IDF,” the army said. The army used a robot to detonate the explosive under controlled conditions. The Islamic Jihad post that was targeted in the tank strike overlooked the portion of the fence where the IED had been planted. In general, the IDF targets Hamas positions in response to attacks or attempted attacks from the Gaza Strip, as the terrorist group rules the coastal enclave. The targeting of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad position likely indicates that the army had specific intelligence that the Iran-backed group was behind the attempted IED attack. In February, four IDF soldiers were injured by an IED that was made to look like a flagstaff, which was fixed to the security fence. When the soldiers tried to take down the object, it detonated.Sunday morning’s exchange was the latest in a series of cross-border incidents over the weekend.Late Saturday night, Israeli aircraft carried out a series of strikes against Hamas positions in the southern Gaza Strip late Saturday night, following a border breach earlier in the day, the army said.Agencies contributed to this report.

IDF shells Islamic Jihad post, killing 3, after attempted IED attack-Latest exchange comes morning after air force struck in southern Strip in response to four Palestinian suspects who breached fence, threw firebomb-By Judah Ari Gross-MAY 28,18

An Israeli tank fired on an Islamic Jihad position in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday morning, killing three people, after Palestinians planted an explosive device along the security fence in the latest exchange along the restive border, the army said.According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, two people were killed and one was seriously injured in the Israeli strike, near the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. he health ministry later announced the third person had died.A spokesperson for the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad confirmed that the men were members of the group’s military arm.The Israel Defense Forces said the improvised explosive device was placed along the security fence on Saturday. The army said the IED had been disguised to look like a set of bolt cutters, with the explosives hidden inside the handles.“Its goal was to injure the [IDF] troops operating in the area. It was neutralized this morning by the IDF,” the army said. The army used a robot to detonate the explosive under controlled conditions. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad post that was targeted in the tank strike overlooked the portion of the fence where the IED had been planted. The Gazan health ministry identified two of those killed as Hussein al-Amour, 25, and Abdul Haleem al-Naqa, 28.“We will not give up our duty to the blood of the martyrs shed by the occupation, and we know how to respond to this dangerous escalation,” the Islamic Jihad spokesperson said.In February, four IDF soldiers were injured by an IED that was made to look like a flagstaff, which was fixed to the security fence. When the soldiers tried to take down the object, it was detonated.Sunday morning’s exchange was the latest in a series of cross-border incidents over the weekend.Late Saturday night, Israeli aircraft carried out a series of strikes against Hamas positions in the southern Gaza Strip late Saturday night, following a border breach earlier in the day, the army said.“The Israel Defense Forces, using fighter jets, attacked a number of terror targets in an military compound belonging to the Hamas terror group in the southern Gaza Strip,” the army said in a statement.Palestinian media reported that the airstrikes hit a number of Hamas positions in the areas of Rafah and Khan Younis. The Gazan health ministry said it had not received any reports of injuries. The army said its airstrikes were in response to the infiltration earlier in the day.“The IDF takes seriously the continued daily attempts by the Hamas terror group to damage the security infrastructure in Israel, while threatening the security of residents and soldiers,” the army said.As a matter of policy, the Israeli army considers Hamas, which rules Gaza, to be responsible for any attack emanating from the beleaguered coastal enclave. On Saturday morning, IDF soldiers spotted four Palestinians who crossed the security fence into Israel from the southern Gaza Strip.According to the army, the four threw a firebomb, and left a tent inside Israel with the message: “March of Return: Returning to the lands of Palestine.”The soldiers arrived at the scene moments later and opened fire at the individuals, who in turn fled back to the Palestinian side of the fence. No injuries were reported in the Saturday morning incident. The infiltration was one of numerous attempts over the weekend to breach and damage the border fence, the IDF said.Dozens of burning kites were flown from Gaza across the border over the weekend, sparking several fires in Israeli fields, Hadashot TV news reported Saturday night. In the past month, 300 “attack” kites have been flown across the border, the report said, setting off 100 fires.Since March 30, tens of thousands of Palestinians have taken part in weekly protests which Israel says are orchestrated by Hamas and used as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence. The violent demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue.Over 10,000 Gazans took part in the demonstrations in the course of Friday and Saturday, the army said. The demonstrations came to a head on May 14 when the US moved its embassy to Jerusalem and at least 60 Palestinians were killed in clashes — almost all of them Hamas members, the terror group has acknowledged. The suspects stayed in Israeli territory for about a minute. During the infiltration, the suspects hurled a firebomb that burst into flames & placed a tent with the caption- "The March of the return. Returning to the lands of Palestine." pic.twitter.com/gUsylt72ZZ— IDF (@IDFSpokesperson) May 26, 2018-In recent weeks, Gazans have been flying kites into Israel outfitted with Molotov cocktails and containers of burning fuel, setting fire to large swaths of fields. On Friday, strong winds hampered efforts to control fires which broke out at three points near Kibbutz Kissufim along the Gaza border, after incendiary kites were flown into Israel from the Palestinian coastal enclave.Military planners have begun implementing new measures to combat the assaults, including lethal options drawn from the IDF’s responses to rocket launches and other terror attacks.Times of Israel staff and AFP contributed to this report.

S. Korea: Kim commits to summit with Trump, denuclearization-[Associated Press]-Hyung-Jin Kim and Foster Klug, -YAHOONEWS-May 28, 2018

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Sunday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un committed in their surprise meeting to sitting down with President Donald Trump and to a "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."The Korean leaders' second summit in a month saw bear hugs and broad smiles, but their quickly arranged meeting Saturday appears to highlight a sense of urgency on both sides of the world's most heavily armed border. At the White House, Trump said negotiations over a potential June 12 summit with Kim that he had earlier canceled were "going along very well." Trump told reporters that they are still considering Singapore as the venue for their talks. He said there is a "lot of good will," and that denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula would be "a great thing."The Koreas' talks, which Moon said Kim requested, capped a whirlwind 24 hours of diplomatic back-and-forth. They allowed Moon to push for a U.S.-North Korean summit that he sees as the best way to ease animosity that had some fearing a war last year.Kim may see the sit-down with Trump as necessary to easing pressure from crushing sanctions and to winning security assurances in a region surrounded by enemies.Moon told reporters Sunday that Kim "again made clear his commitment to a complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," and that he told the South Korean leader he's willing to cooperate to end confrontation and work toward peace for the sake of the successful North Korea-U.S. summit.Moon said he told Kim that Trump has a "firm resolve" to end hostile relations with North Korea and initiate economic cooperation if Kim implements "complete denuclearization.""What Kim is unclear about is that he has concerns about whether his country can surely trust the United States over its promise to end hostile relations (with North Korea) and provide a security guarantee if they do denuclearization," Moon said."During the South Korea-U.S. summit, President Trump said the U.S. is willing to clearly put an end to hostile relations (between the U.S. and North Korea) and help (the North) achieve economic prosperity if North Korea conducts denuclearization," he said.Moon said North Korea and the United States will soon start working-level talks to prepare for the Kim-Trump summit. He said he expects the talks to go smoothly because Pyongyang and Washington both know what they want from each other.Kim, in a telling line from a dispatch issued by the North's state-run news service earlier Sunday, "expressed his fixed will on the historic (North Korea)-U.S. summit talks." During Saturday's inter-Korean summit, the Korean leaders agreed to "positively cooperate with each other as ever to improve (North Korea)-U.S. relations and establish (a) mechanism for permanent and durable peace."They agreed to have their top officials meet again June 1. Moon said military generals and Red Cross officials from the Koreas will also meet separately to discuss how to ease military tensions and resume reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.Saturday's Korean summit came hours after South Korea expressed relief over revived talks for a Trump-Kim meeting.Despite repeated references to "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" by the North, it remains unclear whether Kim will ever agree to fully abandon his nuclear arsenal. The North has previously used the term to demand the United States pull out its 28,500 troops in South Korea and withdraw its so-called "nuclear umbrella" security commitment to South Korea and Japan. The North hasn't openly repeated those same demands after Kim's sudden outreach to Seoul and Washington.Moon has insisted Kim can be persuaded to abandon his nuclear facilities, materials and bombs in a verifiable and irreversible way in exchange for credible security and economic guarantees. Moon said Sunday that the North's disarmament could be still be a difficult process even if Pyongyang, Washington and Seoul don't differ over what "complete denuclearization" of the peninsula means.Moon, who brokered the summit between Washington and Pyongyang, likely used Saturday's meeting to confirm Kim's willingness to enter nuclear negotiations with Trump and clarify what steps Kim has in mind in the process of denuclearization, said Hong Min, a senior analyst at Seoul's Korea Institute for National Unification."While Washington and Pyongyang have expressed their hopes for a summit through published statements, Moon has to step up as the mediator because the surest way to set the meeting in stone would be an official confirmation of intent between heads of states," Hong said. Some U.S. officials have talked about a comprehensive one-shot deal in which North Korea fully eliminates its nukes first and receives rewards later. But Kim, through two summits with Chinese President Xi Jinping in March and May, has called for a phased and synchronized process in which every action he takes is met with a reciprocal reward from the United States. Before he canceled the summit, Trump did not rule out an incremental approach that would provide incentives along the way to the North.Following an unusually provocative 2017 in which his engineers tested a purported thermonuclear warhead and three long-range missiles theoretically capable of striking mainland U.S. cities, Kim has engaged in a flurry of diplomatic activity in recent months. He has had the summits with Moon and Xi, as well as two meetings with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In addition to the team on North Korea that Pompeo set up last year when he was CIA director, he has now enlisted veteran U.S. diplomat Sung Kim to help in the process, a senior U.S. official said. Kim, who is currently ambassador to the Philippines, also served as ambassador to South Korea and was part of the U.S. negotiating team that last held substantive denuclearization talks with North Korea during the George W. Bush administration in 2005.Photos released by South Korea's presidential office showed Moon arriving at the North Korean side of the Panmunjom truce village on Saturday and shaking hands with Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, before sitting down with the North Korean leader for their summit.Moon was accompanied by his spy chief, Suh Hoon, while Kim was joined by Kim Yong Chol, a former military intelligence chief who is now Kim's top official on inter-Korean relations. The two leaders embraced as Moon departed. At their first meeting on April 27, Kim and Moon first announced "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and permanent peace, which Seoul has tried to sell as a meaningful breakthrough to set up the summit with Trump.Ahead of that summit, the Koreas established their first-ever leaders' hotline to enable Moon and Kim to engage in direct communication and defuse crises. But Moon said Sunday that he and Kim decided to meet again, rather than have a telephone conversation, as their aides suggested "candid" face-to-face talks between the leaders.Relations between the two Koreas had chilled in recent weeks, with North Korea canceling a high-level meeting with Seoul over South Korea's participation in regular military exercises with the United States and insisting that it will not return to talks unless its grievances are resolved.South Korea was caught off guard by Trump's abrupt cancellation of his summit with Kim, with the U.S. president citing hostility in recent North Korean comments. Moon said Trump's decision left him "perplexed" and was "very regrettable." He urged Washington and Pyongyang to resolve their differences through "more direct and closer dialogue between their leaders."Saturday's summit marked the fourth meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas since they were divided at the end of the World War II in 1945.___Associated Press writer Kim Tong-hyung contributed to this report.
