Former prime minister, 'private citizen' Stephen Harper says he could 'easily' be leader again-[Yahoo Canada News]-Megan DeLaire-May 16, 2018

As prime minister of Canada from 2006 to 2015 Stephen Harper was known for being reserved, reticent, and and tight-lipped with media. As a “private citizen,” as Justin Trudeau described him last week, Harper appears to have found his voice, particularly when it comes to foreign affairs, populism and the Conservative leadership.A Globe and Mail story published on May 14 referred to video of a 55-minute-long interview at the Standford Graduate School of Business in which Harper says he could “easily” still be leader of the Conservative Party. Speaking to an audience in Stanford, Calif. in February, Harper said he could have turned the party into his “political vehicle” during his leadership if he’d wanted to, but that he chose not to amass too much power for the party’s sake.“I could have wielded a lot more power,” he said. “I think I probably could still easily be leader of my party if I wanted to. I mean, I’m de facto the founder of my party.”Harper has made his views known on a handful of occasions since losing to Justin Trudeau’s Liberals in 2015 federal election. Most recently, he added his name to a list of former world leaders behind a full-page ad in the New York Times endorsing Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.Wow. Full page ad in @nytimes signed by @stephenharper and former Australian PM John Howard pic.twitter.com/ABNQdCe4Pf— Norman Spector (@nspector4) May 10, 2018-The act prompted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to comment that Harper is entitled to his opinion as a “private citizen” but that the current federal government continues to support the 2015 deal.In April, he was criticized for congratulating Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on a successful election campaign fueled by anti-immigrant rhetoric. And during the Stanford University talk in February, Harper, whose non-fiction book about the NHL was published in 2013, announced he is writing a new book about populism and the future of the conservative movement.“I often think that when you see the term populist used in the media today … we describe outcomes we like as democracy and outcomes we don’t like as populism,” he said in defence of populism. “So I think there’s a bit of a loaded term there.”What do you think? Is it a former prime minister’s place to comment on foreign affairs and party politics?

Guatemala set to open Jerusalem embassy, days after US-President and foreign minister of Central American country to attend ceremony in capital, along with Netanyahu-By TOI staff and Raphael Ahren-MAY 16,18

Guatemala was set to open its embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday morning, two days after the US moved its mission to the capital. The 10 a.m. dedication of the Jerusalem embassy will be attended by the Central American country’s president, Jimmy Morales, and foreign minister, Sandra Jovel, as well as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Netanyahu will hold an official meeting with Morales and Jovel at his office later on Wednesday afternoon and will host the Guatemalan president and his wife for dinner, according to the prime minister’s schedule. In 1959, Guatemala was the first country to open its embassy in Jerusalem, but later moved it to Tel Aviv, following international rejection of Israeli claims to East Jerusalem.Tomorrow, #Guatemala will return its embassy to our eternal capital, #Jerusalem! President @jimmymoralesgt – our city is grateful for your leadership! This year in Jerusalem! pic.twitter.com/DmPneq4FQd— Mayor Nir Barkat (@NirBarkat) May 15, 2018-But last December, US President Donald Trump bucked decades of US foreign policy by formally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and setting in motion plans to move the US embassy there from Tel Aviv. The US embassy was officially opened in Jerusalem on Monday in an event attended by a large high-level American delegation, including Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, and Israeli leaders.Guatemala was the first nation after the US to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, on December 24, 2017.Earlier this month, Guatemalan diplomatic staff began transferring furniture and other equipment into their unfinished office in the capital’s Malha Technology Park.Carlos Meyer, one of two Guatemalan diplomats stationed in Israel, has already moved to a new apartment in the capital’s Nahlaot neighborhood. The ambassador, Sara Solís Castañeda, is expected to commute to Jerusalem from her Herzliya residence until she finds a new home in the capital.

State Department: Hamas using embassy move as excuse for violence-Washington says protests along the Gaza border are 'nothing new,' being fueled by terrorist group in an 'irresponsible choice'-By TOI staff and Agencies-MAY 16,18

Hamas, the terrorist organization that rules Gaza, is using the unveiling of the American embassy in Jerusalem as an “excuse” to encourage violence, the US State Department said Tuesday. When pressed by journalists in Washington, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert declined to follow other Western countries in calling for restraint from Israel, or even all parties, after 60 Palestinians were killed in violent clashes with Israeli troops on the Gaza border on Monday.“This is a complex region,” Nauert said. While asserting that “we regret the loss of life; we regret the loss of all life,” Nauert also reiterated the White House position: “Israel has a right to defend itself.”Nauert also refused to link the violence with the new American embassy, unveiled Monday after the United States recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December.“We have watched the demonstrations over the past six weeks. These demonstrations are nothing new,” Nauert said. “If Hamas wants to use that as an excuse to rile people up and to encourage violence, that is their choice. It’s an irresponsible choice.”On Monday, amid an international outcry over the deadly clashes on the Gaza border, the White House fully backed Israel’s response to the riots, while laying the blame squarely on Hamas.“We’re aware of the reports of continued violence in Gaza today. The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas,” said Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah.“Hamas is intentionally and cynically provoking this response and, as the secretary of state said, Israel has the right to defend itself,” he added.Earlier on Tuesday, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said Israel had acted with exceptional “restraint” in dealing with the clashes on the Gaza border.Haley was a rare voice slamming the Hamas terror group and speaking out in favor of Israel at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called over Monday’s deadly fighting. After ambassadors joined in a rare moment of silence for those killed, Haley said Israel was facing Hamas extremists who incited people who lobbed flaming objects toward the Israeli side of the border fence and urged protest marchers to breach it.“Make no mistake, Hamas is pleased with the results from yesterday,” she said.Rejecting criticism of Israel voiced by other UN ambassadors, Haley said that none of their countries would have acted with the same moderation.“Who among us would accept this type of activity on your border? No one would,” she charged. “No country in this chamber would act with more restraint than Israel has.”Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said that 60 Palestinians were killed and more than 2,700 were wounded on Monday amid the biggest riots and rallies in a weeks-long campaign of protests against Israel, known collectively as the “March of Return.”Tens of thousands of Palestinians joined Hamas-organized protests on the Gaza border and hundreds of others clashed with Israeli troops on the outskirts of Jerusalem and in other locations in the West Bank, marking the 70th anniversary of what they call the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” of Israel’s creation in 1948, as well as protesting the relocation of the US embassy to Israel’s capital on Monday afternoon.Israel has blamed Hamas for the deadly violence, saying the terror group encouraged and led the protests, which included attacks on Israeli troops and attempts to breach the border fence. The IDF had said Sunday that Hamas planned to send armed terrorists through any breach in the fence to “massacre” Israelis. The Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror groups acknowledged Tuesday that 13 operatives from the organizations were among the 60 reported killed by IDF fire at the Gaza fence protests a day prior. Israel said at least 24 of the dead were members of terror groups.Haley insisted the violence had nothing to do with the opening of a US embassy in contested Jerusalem, saying that Gaza’s Hamas rulers have been inciting violence there for years. Palestinians condemned the embassy opening as taking Israel’s side in their conflict.“Those who suggest the violence has anything to do with the embassy in Jerusalem is sorely mistaken,” she said, “rather it comes from people who will not accept Israel in any part of Israel.”

Netanyahu says Hamas put Gaza children in line of Israeli fire-In interview with US television network, PM accuses terror group of using 'civilians -- women, children' as human shields in clashes with IDF-By Agencies and TOI staff-MAY 18,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas Tuesday of deliberately putting children in the line of fire amid an outcry over violence on the Gaza border in which dozens of Palestinians were killed during clashes with the Israeli army.Netanyahu told US television that troops were left with no choice but to use lethal force during protests on Monday, and responsibility for the deaths lay entirely with the terrorist group that runs the Gaza Strip.“They [Hamas] are pushing civilians — women, children — into the line of fire with a view of getting casualties,” Netanyahu told the CBS network.“We’ve tried to minimize casualties, they are trying to incur casualties in order to put pressure on Israel which is horrible,” he added. “These things are avoidable. If Hamas had not pushed them there, nothing would happen. Hamas holds responsibility for doing this and they’re deliberately doing it.”A string of foreign governments have voiced alarm about the use of live fire against the protesters, with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accusing the Jewish state of “state terror.”But Netanyahu said other countries would have done the same to prevent its borders being breached.“I don’t know of any army that would do anything differently, if you had to protect your border against people who say ‘we are going to destroy you and we are going to flood into your country,'” he said.“You try other means, you try all sort of means, you try non-lethal means and they don’t work so you are left with bad choices, it’s a bad deal. You go for below the knee and sometimes it doesn’t work unfortunately,” the prime minister added. The US government has also placed the blame for the violence with Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip and does not recognize Israel’s right to exist.Speaking at the UN on Tuesday, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said Hamas would have been “pleased with the results from yesterday” when 60 Gazans were killed.“The Hamas terrorist organization has been inciting violence for years, long before the United States decided to move our embassy,” she told an emergency meeting of the Security Council. The IDF said Hamas and other terror groups had used the protests as cover to carry out attacks against Israel, including shooting at troops and trying to cross the border fence. The Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror groups acknowledged Tuesday that 13 operatives from their organizations were among the fatalities Monday. Israel said at least 24 of the dead were members of terror groups.

Hamas said to offer Israel quiet at Gaza border if airstrikes curbed-As riots at security fence appear quelled, Israeli army reportedly concerned about possible outbreak of violence in West Bank-By TOI staff-MAY 16,18

The Hamas terrorist group was reportedly eager to reduce the number of Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, offering to curb the violence along the border in exchange for a reprieve from Israeli raids.According to the Walla news website, Hamas conveyed to the Israel Defense Forces that it would prevent Palestinians protesters from clashing along the Gaza-Israel border if the Israeli military launches fewer airstrikes on its positions in the coastal enclave. The reported offer came as the number of Palestinian rioters dropped dramatically on Tuesday, with only some 4,000 said to join the border clashes, according to the IDF. That was compared to some 40,000 Palestinians who participated in violent riots along the Gaza security fence on Monday. As the Gaza border protests appeared to be thinning out, the army was concerned about the prospects of an uptick in violence in the West Bank over the month-long Ramadan holiday, which began on Tuesday evening, according to Channel 10.Tens of thousands of Palestinians joined Hamas-organized protests on the Gaza border and hundreds of others clashed with Israeli troops on the outskirts of Jerusalem and in other locations in the West Bank, marking the 70th anniversary of what they call the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” of Israel’s creation in 1948, as well as protesting the relocation of the US embassy to Israel’s capital on Monday afternoon.Israel has blamed Hamas for the deadly violence, saying the terror group encouraged and led the Gaza protests, which included attacks on Israeli troops and attempts to breach the border fence. The IDF had said Sunday that Hamas planned to send armed terrorists through any breach in the fence to “massacre” Israelis. As of Tuesday, 60 Palestinians were reported killed in the clashes by the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, and another 2,771 injured to varying degrees. The Israel Defense Forces said that, in total, at least 24 of the people killed by Israeli troops on Monday were later identified as known members of terrorist organizations.“Most of the people killed belonged to the Hamas terror group, and some to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad,” the army said, citing the findings of a joint investigation with the Shin Bet security service. For Hamas, the terror group that rules Gaza and seeks Israel’s destruction, Monday’s border protest was the culmination of a weeks-long campaign to try to break the blockade on the territory. Israel says the blockade is necessary to prevent Hamas from acquiring weaponry and attacking the Jewish state. On Tuesday, the army said Israeli troops fended off an attempted incursion into Israeli territory by a cell of eight armed Hamas operatives in the northern Gaza Strip during Monday’s border clashes. All eight suspected terrorists were killed in the gun battle with soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces’ elite Maglan Unit, the military said.Following the foiled attack, the IDF also bombarded a Hamas outpost in the northern Gaza Strip, using a tank and an aircraft, the army said.  In total, the IDF said four shooting attacks by Palestinians against Israeli soldiers took place throughout Monday along the Gaza border, as well as four attacks with improvised explosive devices. The Israeli military said its aircraft had struck 11 “terror targets” in a Hamas military compound Monday and that tanks targeted two Hamas posts.Judah Ari Gross contributed to this report.

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

Ash cloud from Hawaii volcano sparks red alert for aviation-[Reuters]-By Terray Sylvester-YAHOONEWS-May 16, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Explosions intensified on Hawaii's Kilauea volcano on Tuesday, spewing ash and triggering a red alert for aircraft for the first time since the latest eruption began 12 days ago.Ash and volcanic smog, or vog, as it is called, rose to 12,000 feet (3,657 meters) above Kilauea's crater and floated southwest, showering cars on Highway 11 with gray dust and prompting an "unhealthy air" advisory in the community of Pahala, 18 miles (29 km) from the summit. An aviation red alert means a volcanic eruption is under way that could spew ash along aircraft routes, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says on its website.Ash was also a new hazard for residents of Hawaii's Big Island, already grappling with volcanic gas and lava that has destroyed 37 homes and other structures and forced the evacuation of about 2,000 residents.A shift in winds was expected to bring ash and vog inland on Wednesday and make them more concentrated, said John Bravender of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)."We're observing more or less continuous emission of ash now with intermittent, more energetic ash bursts or plumes," Steve Brantley, a deputy scientist in charge at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), said on a conference call with reporters. The observatory warned the eruption could become more violent."At any time, activity may become more explosive, increasing the intensity of ash production and producing ballistic projectiles near the vent," the HVO said in a statement on the change in aviation alert level to red from orange.Ash is not poisonous but irritates the nose, eyes and airways. It can make roads slippery and large emissions could cause the failure of electrical power lines, said USGS chemist David Damby.NEW FISSURE-The eruption has hit the island's tourism industry.Big Island summer hotel bookings have dropped by almost half from last year, Rob Birch, executive director of the Island of Hawaii Visitor Bureau, told journalists on a conference call.College exchange student Constantin Plinke, 24, was planning to go to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park before it was shut."We had a big list of things to do and maybe 80 percent of them were in the national park," he said, after stopping by the side of the road to watch ash plumes rising into the air. "It's sad."The area taking the brunt of the eruption is about 25 miles (40 km) down Kilauea's eastern flank, near the village of Pahoa. Lava has burst from the ground to tear through housing developments and farmland, threatening one of the last exit routes from coastal areas, state Highway 132.The latest fissure in the earth opened on Tuesday, spewing lava and toxic gases that pushed air quality into "condition red" around Lanipuna Gardens and nearby farms, causing "choking and inability to breathe," the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and Hawaii County Civil Defense said.Road crews put metal plates over steaming cracks on nearby Highway 130 and reopened it to give coastal residents an escape route should a lava flow reach the ocean and block another road, Highway 137, Civil Defense said.No major injuries or deaths have been reported from the eruption.A looming menace remains the possibility of an "explosive eruption" of Kilauea, an event last seen in 1924. Pent-up steam could drive a 20,000-foot (6,100-meter) ash plume out of the crater and scatter debris over 12 miles (19 km), the USGS said.(Reporting by Terray Sylvester in Pahoa; additional reporting by Jolyn Rosa in Honolulu; Writing by Andrew Hay in Taos, New Mexico; Editing by Jonathan Oatis and Clarence Fernandez)

Ash threatens Hawaii communities after volcano explosions-[Reuters]-By Terray Sylvester-YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Rockfalls and explosions at the summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano shot ash into the air on Tuesday as residents for the first time in the 12-day eruption got text messages from county officials warning them the ash could cause eye and breathing irritation.A plume of gray ash and smoke rose several thousand feet above Kilauea's summit and drifted southwest to the Ka'u district and further downwind, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said."Excessive exposure can cause eye/breathing irritation. Motorists advised to drive with caution,” said the County of Hawaii Civil Defense text message. The ash threatened Ka'u district, which is about 30 miles southwest of Kilauea. To the east of the summit, toxic gas emanating from steaming gashes around 25 miles (40 km) toward the coast added to the danger facing residents, whose escape routes are threatened with closure because of lava flows, officials said.Dangerous levels of sulfur dioxide gas and other emissions prompted state health officials to urge residents to stay indoors or leave the eastern end of Hawaii's Big Island, which has been ravaged by volcanic activity since May 3.A 20th fissure releasing lava and gases has opened on Kilauea's side, state officials said Tuesday.Lava oozing out of fissures have hit the island's lower Puna area especially hard, tearing through farmland some 25 miles (40 km) east of the volcano's smoking summit, destroying 37 homes and other structures and posing a risk of blocking one of the last exit routes, state Highway 132.There have been no major injuries or death reported from the eruption. Officials have ordered around 2,000 residents to evacuate the Leilani Estates area in the eastern Puna district where fissures first appeared. No evacuations have been ordered from Ka'u district.Lava from one of the fissures has been moving toward a coastal dirt road that is also a key access route for some 2,000 residents in the southeastern area of the Big Island, home to around 200,000 people.Mass evacuations would be triggered if either highway is hit by lava, Hawaii National Guard spokesman Major Jeff Hickman said.President Donald Trump on Friday approved a disaster declaration that makes federal relief available to the state. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has a team in place on the Big Island, said it would assist the state with at least 75 percent of emergency measures and replacing damaged infrastructure. The U.S. Geological Survey has warned that pent-up steam could cause a violent explosion at the volcano crater, launching a 20,000-foot (6,100-meter) plume that could spread debris over 12 miles (19 km).Scientists had expected such explosions by the middle of this month as Kilauea's lava lake fell below the water table. But water may not be entering the crater, as feared, and gas and steam may be safely venting, scientists said.(Reporting by Terray Sylvester in Pahoa; additional reporting by Jolyn Rosa in Honolulu and Andrew Hay in Taos, New Mexico; Writing by Peter Szekely; editing by Jonathan Oatis and Diane Craft)

Skip spring, straight to summer? Alberta, B.C., New Brunswick smash daily heat records-Jonathan Rumley-Yahoo Canada News-May 15, 2018

The warm air of spring is finally here and some communities are feeling it like never before.Three provinces had areas that saw new daily heat records snapped on Monday, according to Environment Canada. The new highs were set in Alberta, British Columbia and New Brunswick. Here’s a look at the new maximum temperatures established on May 14, 2018, with statistics provided by the federal weather agency:-Alberta-Claresholm — 28.6 C (Old record of 27.5 C set in 1997)-Drumheller — 30.0 C (Old record of 29.0 C set in 1987)-Waterton Park Gate — 24.1 C (Old record of 23.8 C set in 2012)--British Columbia-Clinton — 28.1 C (Old record of 27.2 C set in 1973)-Kelowna — 30.2 C (Old record of 30.0 C set in 1973)-Malahat — 26.7 C (Old record of 27.5 C set in 1997)-Squamish — 29.2 C (Old record of 28.8 C set in 2006)-Whistler — 31.0 C (Old record of 28.9 C set in 1973)-New Brunswick-Miscou Island — 20.0 C (Old record of 19.0 C set in 2009)-Potential for flooding-Canadians can thank a heatwave sweeping across the West Coast for the record-breaking temperatures. The warm weather shouldn’t come as a surprise as southern British Columbia is expected to have the best summer in the country, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Brett Anderson told Yahoo Canada earlier this month. Anderson said the real heat will come in July with “a fair amount of days” above 35 C and “drier than normal” conditions. The new highs set Monday came after a Mother’s Day where 11 communities also saw records established, as reported by KelownaNow.Perhaps most notable on the list of record breakers is Whistler, B.C., where the average temperature for this time of year is 15.8 C and a low of -2.5 C was recorded in 1986, according to Environment Canada. The warm conditions is not only pushing the mercury near or above the 30 C mark, it’s also causing flooding in some parts of southern British Columbia.Rapidly-melting snow in the mountains are causing rivers to rise and residents are being warned about potential flooding this week. With files from Sarah Rohoman.

A forest fire is still burning on the outskirts of Miramichi as of Tuesday morning."We were able to knock the fire back but unfortunately it's in a remote location," said Mario Berthiaume, deputy fire chief with the Miramichi Fire Department. "There are some hot spots … it's not uncommon for fires to die down in the evening and when the morning begins, the ground starts heating up and the fire becomes active again." Since 4 p.m. on Monday, more than 35 firefighters, police officers, paramedics and forestry officials have been on the scene of the fire along Route 118, or Island View Drive in Nelson-Miramichi.At least five acres has been burned by the blaze.Berthiaume said members of the fire department and the Department of Natural Resources are meeting Tuesday morning, to assess the situation. They also hope to determine what caused the fire in the first place.Frost and rain on the way-One Tuesday morning there were 10 firefighters and 10 members from the provincial department on site. They've broken the fire down into three separate sections, with the Department of Natural Resources working on one section and the fire department working on another. Both firefighters and the province will be working together on the final section. "The weather conditions today are really in our favour," Berthiaume said.Environment Canada has issued a frost advisory for most of the province on Tuesday night. The Miramichi area could also see up to 10 millimetres of rain throughout the evening.Firefighters are hopeful the fire will be extinguished at some point throughout the day."We were able to contain the fire back into some remote areas further back from the properties," Berthiaume said."Right now it doesn't seem to be threatening any properties."-Road to stay open-Route 118 in New Brunswick was temporarily closed Monday, but Berthiaume said it's unlikely the road will close again on Tuesday."We would keep that option open if the weather changes or the fire behaviour changes and we need access to that road," he said. The entire province is closed for burning until, at the earliest, 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to the provincial government. A full burn ban has been in effect since May 9.The province's Forest Fire Watch states Monday's blaze is one of six active fires in New Brunswick — three in the Fredericton area, two in the Miramichi area and one in the Bathurst area.

Prime minister visits Edmonton temple ahead of infrastructure announcements-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

Wearing a head scarf and suit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an appearance at Gurdwara Millwoods in southeast Edmonton Monday.Hundreds packed the temple to witness the brief event with Trudeau, who did not make any public statements. He gave a food bank donation, was presented with a kirpan — a ceremonial dagger worn by Sikhs — and served food to attendees. The visit comes while closed-door talks on the Trans Mountain pipeline between Kinder Morgan and the federal and provincial governments continue. 'Be among smiling faces' It's not lost on John Soroski, assistant professor of political science at MacEwan University, that Trudeau keeps coming back to Mill Woods. It's the riding of federal Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi, who won the seat by 92 votes in the 2015 federal election, after a judicial recount."The Liberals have very few ridings in Alberta as it is," Soroski said. "The government's handling of pipeline issues implies they're probably not likely to increase that. So you really want to try to hang on to whatever you've got."It's a chance for Trudeau to be in the spotlight for things other than the pipeline, like his "close connection with the Sikh community," he explained."That's an opportunity for him to be in Alberta, to have smiling faces around instead of people angrily asking questions about the federal government's support or non-support of the pipeline," Soroski said."It's a good start to your visit if you can be among smiling faces because you'll be among less smiling faces later on."Trudeau's most recent visit to the Edmonton area was in February. The visit included a town hall at MacEwan and a game of pickleball at the Mill Woods Senior and Multicultural Centre.Monday's visit is "out of the blue," said Faron Ellis, research chair of the Citizen Society Research Lab at Lethbridge College."The particular dilemma for this prime minister is coming to Alberta at this time of great sensitivity in federal-provincial relations with many Albertans feeling they're on the losing end, if not being snubbed, being outright ignored are their issues," Ellis said.Albertans want to hear more than campaign rhetoric and platitudes, especially when the clock is ticking on the Trans Mountain pipeline with Kinder Morgan's May 31 deadline, Ellis said."Coming here, doing some campaigning is all good and well, and completely legitimate. Coming here without addressing some of the expectations, or some of the grievances, and having something reasonably substantive to say — particularly on Trans Mountain — is a trip fraught with considerable perils."Trudeau's Alberta visit continues Tuesday, with infrastructure announcements scheduled in Edmonton and Calgary.

London, Ont., physician Tarek Loubani shot in leg near Gaza border-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-MAY 16, 2018

An Ontario physician who works at the London Health Sciences Centre has been shot in the leg while delivering emergency medicine to protesters on the Gaza Strip.Dr. Tarek Loubani said it happened during a "lull" in the protest Monday, as he was standing with a group of paramedics about 25 metres away from the protest area."There were no fires, there was no smoke. We had clear lines of sight to all three fortified sniper posts," said Loubani.."All of the sudden I heard a bang, and I found myself on the ground. I looked at my leg, I saw blood."19 medical professionals shot.Loubani said his colleague, a paramedic named Musa Abuhassanin, came over and began working on his injured leg.About an hour later, Abuhassanin was shot and killed while attempting to rescue another person, Loubani said. All in all, Loubani said a total of 19 medical professionals were shot Monday. The day was one of the deadliest in Gaza since 2014. Israeli forces killed 59 Palestinians and injured another 2,700. Of those injured, the Gaza Health ministry said 130 were in serious or critical condition."The first rule of medical rescue is that you don't become part of the situation, you're no good to anybody if you're shot too," said Loubani, adding that his team had taken extraordinary measures to identify themselves to snipers as medical professionals.Loubani wore a full green outfit; the paramedics wore high-visibility vests."I know gunshots; I know how to stay safe as well," said Loubani. "Sometimes I do things wrong, but yesterday was not one of those days."Yesterday I did everything right, and it's very hard to believe I wasn't specifically targeted, considering that there was a lull in activity, considering the fact that I was so clearly marked."Thomas Woodley, president of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, said firing on medical personnel is forbidden by the Geneva Convention."Certainly, Dr. Loubani and his colleagues were clearly wearing emergency medical clothing, and they should have been spared any sort of violence from the Israelis," said Woodley.CBC News reached out to Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland for comment. In an email statement, spokesperson Adam Austen said the ministry is concerned about the shooting."Parliamentary secretary Omar Alghabra, as well as consular officials, have been in touch with his family earlier today," said Austen."Canada is very deeply saddened and deplores the violence that has occurred in the Gaza Strip. It is appalling and inexcusable that civilians, members of the media, first responders, and children have been among the victims."Loubani said he hopes to stay in the area, but that his leg injury means he won't be able to work on the front lines. He plans to continue working in the emergency department if his health allows.Loubani's work in the Middle East-Loubani works with the London Health Sciences Centre and the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, and is known for his work in the 3-D printing of medical devices. He had been in the region, in part, to work on a newly developed 3-D printed tourniquet to stop serious bleeding from gunshot wounds.Loubani said the tourniquets are in high demand because the border blockade makes it difficult to transport medical supplies in and out of the region. When Loubani was shot, he said his colleague Auhassanin asked if he wanted a tourniquet himself. Loubani said he declined."I knew that if I was in Canada I would be tourniqueted, but there just were so few of them and I knew there would be so many more injuries and fatalities. So I said no. He bandaged me up and I went," said Loubani."I have always known that one day [the tourniquet] would be used on me, so that's tremendous incentive to get it right. We want it to be as good as the stuff on the market."Loubani said his main objective has stayed the same: to make sure that patients on the Gaza Strip — or anywhere in the world — can access the same level of care as those at London Health Sciences Centre. He said that can be difficult to do."If you were to take London Health Sciences and throw 2,400 injuries at them, what would they do? And at the end of it, how many doctors would be left standing?" said Loubani."It's normal when you see so much death and destruction to yourself die a little and be destroyed a little .... We're disappointed to not give our patients the care they deserve."

North Korea threatens to cancel US summit over drills-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 16, 2018

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of — North Korea on Wednesday cancelled a high-level meeting with South Korea and threatened to scrap a historic summit next month between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over military exercises between Seoul and Washington that Pyongyang has long claimed are invasion rehearsals. A senior North Korean diplomat said Pyongyang will refuse to be pressured into abandoning its nukes. The surprise declaration, which came in a pre-dawn dispatch in North Korea's state media, appears to cool what had been an unusual flurry of outreach from a country that last year conducted a provocative series of weapons tests that had many fearing the region was on the edge of war. It's still unclear, however, whether the North intends to scuttle all diplomacy or merely wants to gain leverage ahead of the planned June 12 talks between Kim and Trump.North Korea's first vice foreign minister, Kim Kye Gwan, said Pyongyang has no interest in a summit with Washington if it's going to be a "one-sided" affair where it's pressured to give up its nukes. He criticized recent comments by Trump's top security adviser, John Bolton, and other U.S. officials who have been talking about how the North should follow the "Libyan model" of nuclear disarmament and provide a "complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement." He also took issue with U.S. views that the North should fully relinquish its biological and chemical weapons."We will appropriately respond to the Trump administration if it approaches the North Korea-U.S. summit meeting with a truthful intent to improve relations," he said. "But we are no longer interested in a negotiation that will be all about driving us into a corner and making a one-sided demand for us to give up our nukes and this would force us to reconsider whether we would accept the North Korea-U.S. summit meeting."The North cancelled the talks hours before the two Koreas were to meet at a border village to discuss how to implement their leaders' recent agreements to reduce military tensions along their heavily fortified border and improve their overall ties.It called the two-week Max Thunder drills, which began Monday and reportedly include about 100 aircraft, an "intended military provocation" and an "apparent challenge" to last month's summit between Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, when the leaders met on their border in their countries' third summit talks since their formal division in 1948.The North's official Korean Central News Agency said the U.S. aircraft mobilized for the drills include nuclear-capable B-52 bombers and stealth F-22 fighter jets, two of the U.S. military assets it has previously said are aimed at launching nuclear strikes on the North.South Korea's Defence Ministry said the drills will go on as planned."The United States must carefully contemplate the fate of the planned North Korea-U.S. summit amid the provocative military ruckus that it's causing with South Korean authorities," the North said Wednesday. "We'll keenly monitor how the United States and South Korean authorities will react."Some analysts say bringing up Libya, which dismantled its rudimentary nuclear program in the 2000s in exchange for sanctions relief, would risk derailing any progress in negotiations with the North.Kim Jong Un took power weeks after former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's gruesome death at the hands of rebel forces amid a popular uprising in October 2011. The North has frequently used Gadhafi's death to justify its own nuclear development in the face of perceived U.S. threats.Annual military drills between Washington and Seoul have long been a major source of contention between the Koreas, and analysts have wondered whether their continuation would hurt the detente that, since an outreach by Kim in January, has replaced the insults and threats of war. Earlier — and much larger — springtime drills, which Washington and Seoul toned down, went off without the North's typically fiery condemnation or accompanying weapons tests.South Korea called North Korea's move "regrettable" and demanded a quick return to talks.Seoul's Unification Ministry spokesman Baek Tae-hyun said the North's decision goes against the spirit of last month's inter-Korean summit, where the Koreas' leaders issued a vague vow on the "complete denuclearization" on the Korean Peninsula and pledged permanent peace between the rivals. He didn't provide a straightforward answer on whether Seoul sees the North's talks cancellation as potentially affecting the meeting between Trump and Kim.In Washington, the U.S. State Department emphasized that Kim had previously indicated he understood the need and purpose of the U.S. continuing its long-planned exercises with South Korea. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the U.S. had not heard anything directly from Pyongyang or Seoul that would change that."We will continue to go ahead and plan the meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un," Nauert said.U.S. Army Col. Rob Manning said the current exercise is part of the U.S. and South Korea's "routine, annual training program to maintain a foundation of military readiness." Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, said the purpose of Max Thunder and exercise Foal Eagle — another training event — is to enhance the two nations' abilities to operate together to defend South Korea."The defensive nature of these combined exercises has been clear for many decades and has not changed," Manning said.Washington and Seoul delayed an earlier round of drills in the spring because of the North-South diplomacy surrounding February's Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in the South, which saw Kim send his sister to the opening ceremonies.Kim told visiting South Korean officials in March that he "understands" the drills would take place and expressed hope that they'll be modified once the situation on the peninsula stabilizes, according to the South Korean government. The North's statement Wednesday comes amid a slew of surprising moves in recent weeks. On Tuesday, South Korea's military said North Korea was moving ahead with plans to close its nuclear test site next week, an assessment backed by U.S. researchers who say satellite images show the North has begun dismantling facilities at the site. The site's closure was set to come before the Kim-Trump summit, which had been shaping up as a crucial moment in the decades-long push to resolve the nuclear standoff with the North, which is closing in on the ability to viably target the mainland United States with its long-range nuclear-armed missiles.Despite the North's moves, some experts were skeptical about whether Kim would completely give up a nuclear program that he had pushed so hard to build. The North previously vowed to continue nuclear development unless the United States pulls its 28,500 troops out of South Korea and withdraws its so-called "nuclear umbrella" security guarantee to South Korea and Japan as a condition for its nuclear disarmament.Wednesday's threat could also be targeted at showing a domestic audience that Kim is willing to stand up to Washington. Kim has repeatedly told his people that his nukes are a "powerful treasured sword" that can smash U.S. hostility.North Korea also has a long history of launching provocations or scrapping deals with Seoul and Washington at the last minute. In 2013, North Korea abruptly cancelled reunions for familiesseparatedby the 1950-53 Korean War just days before they were held to protest what it called rising animosities ahead of joint drills between Seoul and Washington. A year earlier in 2012, the North conducted a prohibited long-range rocket launch weeks after it agreed to suspend weapons tests in return for food assistance.___Associated Press writers Kim Tong-hyung in Seoul, South Korea, and Lolita Baldor and Josh Lederman in Washington contributed to this report.Hyung-Jin Kim And Foster Klug, The Associated Press.

Scotland's Sturgeon warns of 'catastrophic' no deal Brexit-[Reuters]YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

LONDON (Reuters) - Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon cautioned on Monday that the United Kingdom could be heading towards a no deal Brexit that would have catastrophic consequences.Speaking at Thomson Reuters in London, Sturgeon said she felt there was no majority for a hard Brexit in the country but that the United Kingdom was at a moment when momentum could swing either towards a softer Brexit or a no deal Brexit."At some point that majority for the least damaging Brexit, a softer Brexit, at some point has to assert itself," Sturgeon said."The danger if I am being less optimistic, or pessimistic, is that the whole process crashes before that can emerge because time is running out and the clock is ticking," she said."I guess there is a real risk -- probably a greater risk today than there was three, six, nine months ago -- of the whole process falling apart," she said.Sturgeon, who took the helm of the Scottish National Party after Scots voted to reject independence in a September 2014 referendum, said it was hard to see how the Irish border issue could be resolved without the UK staying in the customs union."There is a real risk of a no deal Brexit and that would be pretty catastrophic," Sturgeon said.(Reporting by Guy Faulconbridge; editing by Alistair Smout)

Closing North Korea nuclear test site an important step, U.N. chief says-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

VIENNA (Reuters) - Irreversibly closing North Korea's nuclear test site is an important step that could pave the way for progress at talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Monday.North Korea gave details on Saturday on the planned dismantling of the Punggye-ri site where it is believed to have carried out all six of its nuclear tests. The official Korean Central New Agency said it would take place between May 23 and 25 and involve collapsing all the site's tunnels with explosions, blocking its entrances, and removing all observation facilities, research buildings and security posts."I would like to welcome that and to say that the irreversible closure of the site will be an important confidence-building measure that will contribute to further efforts towards sustainable peace and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," Guterres said in a statement after meeting Austria's chancellor in Vienna."And I look forward to this positive momentum being consolidated at the summit between the leaders of the United States and North Korea," he said in the remarks to reporters after his meeting with Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.Trump and Kim are due to hold talks in Singapore on June 12, the first-ever meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader. After North Korea's announcement on Saturday, Trump said on Twitter: "Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture!"(Reporting by Francois Murphy; Editing by Toby Chopra)

Plane carrying bodies of 20 Egyptian Christians beheaded in 2015 leaves Libya-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

MISRATA, Libya (Reuters) - A Libyan plane carrying the bodies of 20 Egyptian Christians killed in 2015 by Islamic State in its former Libyan stronghold of Sirte left the western city of Misrata for Egypt on Monday afternoon, a Libyan official said. The bodies were recovered in October after a captured commander from the jihadist group gave away the area where they had been buried, officials said at the time. Libya agreed to return them to Egypt after Islamic State was pushed out of the city late last year. The Coptic Christians were beheaded on a beach in February 2015 wearing orange jumpsuits, according to a video posted by the militant group. The body of a Ghanaian national who was killed with them was not on board the plane bound for Egypt, the official said. Islamic State took control of Sirte in 2015 and lost the city late last year to local forces backed by U.S. air strikes.(Reporting by Ahmed Elumami; Writing by Ulf Laessing; Editing by Catherine Evans)

He won the job after spearheading a wave of protests that forced out the long-serving leader of the Caucasus nation.

Hardline separatist Torra appointed leader of Catalonia-[AFP]-Daniel BOSQUE-YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

Barcelona (AFP) - Quim Torra, a newcomer to politics who has campaigned fiercely for Catalonia's independence, was appointed regional president Monday vowing to keep fighting for a break from Spain.Torra's election by the regional parliament paves the way for a new government in Catalonia after months of political limbo.Analysts warn the road ahead will be rocky as Torra faces rifts within the separatist camp and Catalans remain deeply split over leaving Spain.Torra, handpicked as presidential candidate by deposed, exiled leader Carles Puigdemont, scraped through the parliamentary vote -- 66 separatist lawmakers voted for him, 65 anti-independence MPs against and four abstained."We will build a Catalan republic," he said after the vote, as lawmakers sang Catalonia's anthem "Els Segadors" ("The Reapers" in English). The 55-year-old father of three pledged to respect the result of an independence referendum held on October 1 despite a court ban and marred by police violence.Catalan separatist authorities said 90 percent of the 2.2 million people who cast their ballot in the referendum -- out of 5.5 million eligible voters -- opted to break from Spain.- Puigdemont's pick -Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called for "understanding and harmony" but warned that he would not tolerate any flouting of the law and Spain's constitution. The formation of a new government will automatically lift direct rule imposed by Madrid on October 27 after separatist lawmakers made a short-lived unilateral declaration of independence. In a bid to end the biggest political crisis to hit Spain in decades, Rajoy called snap regional elections, held in December, which separatist parties won as the secessionist movement in Catalonia showed no sign of dying down. But since then, the presidential candidates put forward by the separatist camp all fell flat as they were either in jail in Spain over their role in the secession bid or in self-exile.Torra, who was elected to the Catalan parliament in December on Puigdemont's Together for Catalonia list, finally made it through as he has no legal woes.Puigdemont, who was deposed by Madrid last October, was shown on Catalan television watching Torra's speech from Germany where he awaits a court decision on whether to extradite him to Spain. He faces jail on rebellion charges for last year's secession bid if he returns. In an interview published Saturday by Italian daily La Stampa, Puigdemont said Torra, as his designated successor, "takes power in provisional conditions and he is aware of that".For his part Torra, who is heading to Berlin to meet with Puigdemont on Tuesday, said he would stay in the post only until the ousted leader, whom he called the "legitimate president", returns home.Ines Arrimadas, leader in Catalonia of the centrist, anti-independence Ciudadanos party, has branded Torra a mere "puppet" of Puigdemont.- Crisis not over -Torra tried -- and failed -- to be appointed on Saturday at an initial parliamentary vote that required an absolute majority.During Monday's session, in which he needed only a simple majority, he outlined his new government's plans for education, health and employment. On Saturday, he had focused entirely on independence.During that speech, he lambasted European institutions for their "unacceptable silence" over the Catalan crisis. He also said a "Republican council" would be created abroad in parallel, presided by Puigdemont, as well as an assembly composed of local officials.Torra has received harsh criticism for some of his past articles and tweets. He has described Spain as "a country that exports misery" and slammed those who do not defend the Catalan language and culture as "scavengers, vipers and hyenas".A tweet he posted in 2012 said: "Spaniards only know how to plunder."He has since apologised.Antonio Barroso, deputy research director at Teneo Intelligence, said Torra faces divisions within the separatist camp, composed of the small, radical CUP party, the leftwing ERC party and the Together for Catalonia grouping. The ERC wants a moderate approach to avoid a clampdown by Madrid and to play a longer independence game, he said."In contrast, Puigdemont's strategy is to continue using every opportunity... to continue challenging the Spanish authorities and keep the secessionist momentum alive."For Oriol Bartomeus, politics professor at Barcelona Autonomous University, the region risks having "a divided government -- there could be fallout".

Hezbollah says 'new phase' in war with Israel after strikes-[Associated Press]-SARAH EL DEEB-YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

BEIRUT (AP) — The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah said Monday a barrage of rockets from Syria against Israeli forces in the occupied Goal Heights last week opens up "a new phase" in the conflict, warning that Israel proper could be the next target for retaliation.Hassan Nasrallah said that Israel has been informed through an international body that retaliation inside Israel will take place if it crosses "a red line" in Syria, without providing specifics.Israel on Thursday unleashed a heavy bombardment against what it said were Iranian military installations in Syria on Thursday. It said it was retaliation for an Iranian rocket barrage on its positions in the Golan. It was the most serious military confrontation between the two bitter enemies to date.In a televised speech to a rally in Beirut, Nasrallah did not say who carried out the rocket fire into the Golan. He called it retaliation for "Israel's continued aggression against Syria." In past weeks, Israel is believed to have carried out a number of strikes against military bases in Syria, killing Iranian and Syrian troops."You as an enemy will not be able to continue to target Syria and the axis of resistance without retaliation," he said, adding, "This qualitative rocket attack establishes for a complete new phase" in the conflict with Israel. The axis of resistance is a reference to Iran and its allies, Syria, Hezbollah and other allied armed groups in the region.Nasrallah said Israel has downplayed its losses in the strikes, in which he said 55 rockets hit military targets in the Golan for the first time since Israel and Syria had reached a cease fire and a disengagement agreement in 1974. Israel had said it downed 20 rockets coming from Syria. He said Israel's retaliation mostly hit a number of posts in Syria that had already been evacuated. He said Syrian air defenses downed a number of Israel's missiles. He said the barrage "broke the prestige" of Israel and that the attack, Israel's response and its response against Gaza protests on Monday show it is far from ready to face its opponents."If anyone is afraid of war in the region, it is Israel," Nasrallah said.He also blasted Bahrain's foreign minister, calling him an "idiot" and a "traitor" for supporting Israel's right to respond to the barrage of rockets coming from Syria.Nasrallah called the creation of Israel, which marks 70 years of its creation Monday, a "mark of shame" for humanity. He said the pressure from Israel and the United States on Iran is not just because of its nuclear program, but is in essence because of its support to the Palestinians and other "resistance" groups. He urged the Palestinians not to accept any new U.S. peace plans.

JOEL 3:2 (WW3 OCCURS WHEN JERUSALEM IS DIVIDED)
2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people (ISRAEL) and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.(JERUSALEM)(WW3 STARTS BECAUSE JERUSALEM IS DIVIDED AND ISRAELIS UPROOTED FROM THEIR GOD GIVIN LAND BRINGS 3 DEAD BILLION IN WW3)

MICAH 4:1,6-13
1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
6  In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted;
7  And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever.
8  And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
9  Now why dost thou cry out aloud? is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished? for pangs have taken thee as a woman in travail.
10  Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail: for now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered; there the LORD shall redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies.
11  Now also many nations are gathered against thee, that say, Let her be defiled, and let our eye look upon Zion.
12  But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor.
13  Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion: for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people: and I will consecrate their gain unto the LORD, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.

Clashes in West Bank as Palestinians mark Nakba Day, protest new US embassy-Thousands gather in Ramallah, hundreds march on key crossing point on outskirts of Jerusalem, as dozens are killed on Gaza border-By Agencies and TOI staff-MAY 14,18
Hundreds of Palestinians clashed with Israeli troops on the outskirts of Jerusalem and in other locations in the West Bank Monday in the hours leading up to the dedication ceremony for the new US Embassy in the capital. In addition to protesting the embassy move, Palestinians were marking the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” of Israel’s creation in 1948.The rioting came as dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli security forces during violent protests on the Israel-Gaza border, among them several terror operatives. At the Qalandiya crossing, north of Jerusalem, hundreds were marching and throwing stones at Israeli soldiers, who responded with firing live bullets, tear gas and rubber-coated steel pellets. A second clash was reported between Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and there were further protests in the West Bank city of Hebron. There were no immediate reports of injuries.Earlier Monday, several thousand gathered in the West Bank city of Ramallah to protest the inauguration of the US embassy.Hadashot TV news said the Palestinian Authority was encouraging the protests, including by showing the Gaza border clashes on television in a live feed.US President Donald Trump announced on December 6, 2017, that he was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and would move the US embassy to the city from Tel Aviv. The festive opening took place on Monday afternoon.Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as a capital and view the Trump administration’s recognition of the city as Israel’s capital as a show of pro-Israel bias.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said at least 52 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire and more than 500 were injured amid mass protests on the border. The IDF said around 50,000 Gazans were demonstrating in 12 locations along the border. It said thousands more were gathered at points several hundred meters from the fence. The army said three of those killed were trying to plant explosives at the border fence. It said aircraft struck a Hamas post after gunmen there opened fire on troops. The army also said aircraft struck a Hamas post after gunmen there opened fire on troops. There were no injuries among the soldiers. Reports said the IAF also struck five targets in the Jabaliya area. The IDF confirmed it carried out a series of airstrikes in Gaza “in response to the violent acts of the last few hours being carried out by Hamas along the security fence.”“A short while ago, an IAF fighter jet struck five terrorist targets in a military training facility belonging to the Hamas terror organization in the northern Gaza Strip,” the army said in a statement Monday afternoon.Military sources said the Hamas terror group was determined to spark a major new, long-term uprising against Israel, extending to the West Bank.Israel said ahead of Monday’s protests that Hamas was planning to breach the Gaza border fence and “massacre” Israelis, and that it would stop a possible border breach at all costs, warning protesters that they were putting their own lives in peril. Some 800 guests were attending Monday’s embassy inauguration. Representing the US at the opening was US Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan, Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, the president’s daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump, and Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt. US Ambassador David Friedman presided over the dedication ceremony.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin, and other senior Israeli officials also attended the event, which began at 4 p.m. local time at the embassy’s new location in the Arnona neighborhood of the capital.

Theresa May: UK will not move its embassy to Jerusalem-Britain has not changed its position and disagrees with Trump's decision to recognize the city as Israel's capital, PM says-By TOI staff-MAY 14,18

British Prime Minister Theresa May said Monday that her country had no plans to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.A spokesperson for the prime minister said the UK’s position has not changed, and that it disagreed with US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the US embassy from Tel Aviv.“The PM said in December when the announcement was first made that we disagree with the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital before a final status agreement,” the spokesman said. “The British embassy to Israel is based in Tel Aviv and we have no plans to move it.”Britain was one of 128 countries that in December voted in favor of a United Nations resolution condemning the Trump administration’s recognition earlier that month of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and calling on countries not to move their diplomatic missions to the city.Even though the United Kingdom is in the process of negotiating its exit from the European Union, its policy on Jerusalem matches that of the bloc. The EU had previously vehemently rejected any attempt to change Jerusalem’s status in the absence of a final peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.Trump’s announcement delighted the Israeli government, but angered Palestinians who claim the eastern part of the city as the capital of a future Palestinian state,.On Monday afternoon, the new embassy was being dedicated in a celebratory ceremony hosted by US ambassador David Friedman, and attended by a large US delegation and hundreds of dignitaries.Meanwhile Monday, dozens of Palestinians were killed in violent demonstrations on the Gaza border.

Trump calls Jerusalem embassy move ‘a great day for Israel’-US president's congratulations come amid deadly Palestinian protests along Gaza border-By AFP and TOI-MAY 14,18

US President Donald Trump hailed Monday’s opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem as “a great day for Israel,” while deadly Hamas-spurred clashes raged between Palestinians and Israeli security forces on the Gaza Strip border.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said at least 45 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire and nearly 1,000 were injured amid mass protests on the border in commemoration of the Palestinian Nakba Day, which marks the “catastrophe” of Israel’s founding 70 years ago. The Israeli military said Hamas was making repeated efforts to breach the border, which it was repelling.Trump made no reference to the violence in an early morning tweet, instead inviting his followers to watch live coverage of the embassy dedication ceremony on Fox News.“Lead up to 9:00 A.M. (eastern) event has already begun. A great day for Israel!” Trump tweeted. Some 800 guests were participating in the embassy dedication. Representing the US at the opening were US Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan, Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, the president’s daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump, and Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt. US Ambassador David Friedman was presiding over the dedication ceremony.Meanwhile, the Israeli army said some 50,000 Gazans were demonstrating in 12 locations along the border with Israel. It said thousands more were gathered at points several hundred meters from the fence. The army said three of those killed were trying to plant explosives at the border fence. It said aircraft struck a Hamas post after gunmen there opened fire on troops. There were also Palestinian reports of airstrikes in Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip. In a separate incident, IDF troops opened fire on gunmen who were trying to shoot them, Hadashot TV news said.Military sources said Hamas was determined to spark a major new, long-term uprising against Israel, extending to the West Bank.Hadashot said the Palestinian Authority was encouraging the protests, including by showing the Gaza border clashes on television in a live feed. In the West Bank, where the PA governs Palestinians, several thousand people gathered in the center of Ramallah, while hundreds marched to the Qalandiya crossing on the outskirts of Jerusalem where protesters threw stones at Israeli troops.Jerusalem’s status is perhaps the thorniest issue in the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Israel considers the entire city its capital, while the Palestinians see its eastern neighborhoods as the capital of their future state.Trump announced on December 6, 2017, that he was recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and would move the embassy to the city from Tel Aviv. The development delighted the Israeli government, but angered Palestinians who want the eastern part of the city as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Most European countries have slammed Trump’s move as not in line with international consensus, preferring to wait on recognizing the city until the status of Jerusalem is finalized in talks with the Palestinians.Israel said ahead of Monday’s protests that Hamas was planning to breach the Gaza border fence and “massacre” Israelis, and that it would stop a possible border breach at all costs, warning protesters that they were putting their own lives in peril. The protests come as part of the “March of Return” demonstrations along the Gaza security fence. Israel was braced for more than 100,000 Palestinians to take part on Monday, and potentially as many as 200,000. That kind of turnout would indicate a major victory for the Hamas terrorist group, which rules Gaza and has co-opted for its own ends what were originally billed as weeks of nonviolent protests.

Op-ed-As America endorses Israel in Jerusalem, Hamas shows it never will-6 takeaways from the festive, bloody, tumultuous afternoon when the US opened its embassy in the capital-By David Horovitz-TOI-MAY 14,18

The US formally inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem on Monday — the concrete culmination of President Donald Trump’s recognition of the city as Israel’s capital.Simultaneously, Hamas intensified its riots at the Israel-Gaza border — the violent manifestation of its opposition to the very fact of Israel’s existence. Here are six takeaways from a historic, tumultuous afternoon.1. No evident American consensus-From an Israeli perspective, Monday’s festive opening of the embassy was a relatively multi-partisan, politically consensual affair. Not only did President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speak at the ceremony, but centrist leader Yair Lapid of Yesh Atid warmly praised the relocation, and the leader of the opposition, Labor’s Isaac Herzog, was in supportive attendance. From an American perspective, by contrast, there was no parallel near-consensus. Naturally, the proceedings were dominated by members of the Trump administration, with Ambassador David Friedman presiding. President Trump — the man who broke with his predecessors and ordered the embassy moved from Tel Aviv — sent a video message, his son-in-law Jared Kushner spoke, his Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin unveiled the seal, and his daughter Ivanka was the first to issue a welcome to the new facility. But while the American dignitaries included numerous Republican legislators and supporters, no prominent Democratic lawmakers were known to be present. Even former president Barack Obama’s ambassador to Israel, Dan Shapiro, who stayed on in Israel with his family through the end of the school year after his term ended in January, was providing commentary on Hadashot TV news. Although he was invited to Sunday’s evening pre-inauguration event at the Foreign Ministry, he did not get an invitation to the main show.In interviews on Monday, Shapiro stressed his support for the embassy move, but said he wished it had been presented in the context of an effort to advance negotiations on a two-state solution.Asked why Democrats had stayed away from the event, he speculated that they too were concerned about the absence of strategic emphasis on a two-state accord.Outside the new embassy compound, not everything Israeli was quite consensual, it should be noted. A demonstration by Israeli opponents of the move, with the presence of several Arab Knesset members, which had been authorized by police, flared out of control, when some of the protesters raised Palestinian flags and, according to Hadashot TV, shouted slogans for the liberation of Palestine. At that point, the police waded in to disperse the gathering.2. Hamas’s split screen ‘victory’-For weeks, Gaza’s Hamas terrorist rulers have been doing their utmost to encourage the Strip’s masses — men, women, and children — to march on the border. On Monday, in the largest such protest, Hamas mobilized an estimated 50,000 people. According to its figures, about 50 Gazans were killed in the ensuing violent clashes; the IDF said at least 10 of the fatalities had been identified as Hamas members by Monday evening. Ironically, a death toll of that order is considered by the cynical Islamist movement to be a victory of sorts, since it focuses global attention on the Palestinians.Hamas’s overall goal, as its leaders have repeatedly told Gazans in recent weeks, is to “liberate Palestine” — as in, to eliminate Israel. It recently disseminated a video in Hebrew showing young Gaza children vowing they would be “returning to our homeland.”Hamas has been losing its attack tunnels — underground terrorist routes into Israel that the IDF is gradually managing to locate. The Iron Dome defense system generally takes out its rockets. Hence the new tactic — mass protests, as cover for violent attacks on the border, and as a distraction from the misery its rule is imposing on Gaza. On Friday, Hamas leaders reportedly encouraged Gazans to trash their own fuel supply lines and other infrastructure at the main Kerem Shalom aid entry point — bringing more suffering to its populace.Hamas on Monday was seeking, as it has been seeking for weeks, to breach the border and get into Israel, as a symbolic step toward that goal of “liberation.” Its hope, according to Palestinian sources quoted in Hebrew media, was to breach the fence at around the time that the United States was formally declaring its new embassy open. Indeed, between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m., as the ceremonies in Jerusalem were about to get under way, Israeli military correspondents reported several attempted attacks along the border.Numerous TV stations — including Al-Jazeera, regional Arabic broadcasters, Israeli TV, the BBC, CNN, and SKY — split their screens for parts of the embassy event — showing the speeches on one side and the clashes at the Gaza border on the other. As Channel 10’s Alon Ben-David noted, the “split screen” was a victory of sorts for Hamas. As night began to fall, Hamas had not managed to breach the border. This, the IDF said, despite sending 12 separate cells to try to break through at different locations. And the Israeli army, which said it had been facing efforts to place explosives at the border and attempts to fire on troops, began targeting Hamas training bases and other Hamas assets, in an effort to deter further attacks. Evidently unfazed, Hamas announced that Monday’s protests, and more set for Tuesday — Nakba Day, when the Palestinians mourn what they call the “catastrophe” that befell them with the revival of Jewish sovereignty in 1948 — would not mark the end of its campaign.3. Why the gunmen stay back-Shortly before the embassy opening, and as the violence escalated at the Gaza border, Israel’s Shin Bet security agency released details of intelligence it had gleaned from arrested Hamas terror suspects that, it said, threw light on the Hamas border tactics.According to this information, Hamas tells its gunmen not to get too close to the border, where they can be identified and targeted by Israeli troops; on the first Friday of protests in March, Hamas confirmed that five of its members were killed, and the Israeli army identified several others. Since then, Hamas has stopped acknowledging such fatalities.Instead, according to the Shin Bet evidence, Hamas encourages Gaza civilians to get close to the fence, and keeps its armed gunmen back and ready — ready to bust through the border into Israel should the opportunity arise. The Shin Bet also said that Iran has been providing funds for the Gaza border campaign, which was initially, risibly, presented by some of its organizers as non-violent.4. Eyes on the West Bank-Hamas has also been trying to foment violence in the West Bank. In this, it has had some support from its rival/partner, the Palestinian Authority of Mahmoud Abbas. Hadashot TV news said the PA was encouraging protests on Monday, including by showing the Gaza border clashes on television in a live feed.Monday did see a surge in West Bank violence. At the Qalandiya crossing, north of Jerusalem, hundreds marched and threw stones at Israeli soldiers, who responded with live fire, tear gas, and rubber-coated steel pellets. Clashes were also reported south of Jerusalem, near Bethlehem and in Hebron. Those protests were not of the intensity that Hamas is seeking. It will keep trying, however. Abbas’s PA will play a key role in determining how things unfold. On Monday, the PA’s security personnel was conspicuous in their absence from some hot spots. Its former chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, meanwhile, was condemning the US Embassy move as hostile, illegal, and, according to an Israel TV report, the equivalent of the establishment of an illegal outpost in Palestinian territory.Speeches by President Trump and Kushner insisting that the US seeks to broker a viable peace treaty, and highlighting the status quo in Jerusalem as an indication that not all of Jerusalem is off the table for the Palestinians, are emphatically falling on deaf ears.5. Heady days for Netanyahu-The embassy inauguration was an American event, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was a central feature — hailing Trump’s courage in making the move, declaring that “we are here in Jerusalem, and we are here to stay.”These are heady days for the Israeli prime minister, especially given his alliance with Trump. The Americans have recognized Jerusalem. Allies in the EU prevented a European denunciation of the embassy move. A trickle of other countries are moving legations to the capital. Over 30 countries sent representatives to the Foreign Ministry event on Sunday. At the same time, Iran is under pressure — its nuclear weapons secrets conclusively exposed by the Mossad’s extraordinary raid on its Tehran archive. Trump has quit the 2015 Iran deal. Israel has set back Iran’s military infrastructure in Syria. Saudi Arabia is sounding somewhat more well-disposed toward Israel. Netanyahu gets to chat with Gulf ambassadors. Opponents such as Yesh Atid and Labor are simply being marginalized. Nobody is talking about the corruption allegations against him. He is rising in the polls. Not much in this part of the world is permanent, however. Iran is a patient and pernicious enemy. It has not abandoned its nuclear quest. It has a highly armed military tool in the shape of Hezbollah, with immense missile capabilities and Syrian battle experience. Hamas is vicious, cynical, and creative. The West Bank is thoroughly unpredictable; Abbas, 82, is on his last legs and, however unpalatable he has become, any successor will be still less comfortable for Israel.6. And finally-Not much in this part of the world is permanent. But the Jewish connection to Jerusalem, underlined in Monday’s embassy move and so widely resisted among the Palestinians, comes pretty close.

Latin American states in quandary over US embassy move-[AFP]-Tupac POINTU with AFP bureaux across Latin America-YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

Montevideo (AFP) - US President Donald Trump's decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, enraging Palestinians, has left several Latin American countries pondering whether to follow suit.To date, two nations have done so: Guatemala and Paraguay, both looking to strengthen ties with Washington even at the risk of alienating the 128 countries that backed a UN resolution condemning its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. And experts believe more countries in the region could yet follow.Monday's ceremony to inaugurate the US embassy was marred by violent clashes along the Gaza border that left 52 Palestinians dead from Israeli fire and thousands wounded, in the conflict's bloodiest day in years.Guatemala will inaugurate its embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday -- with its President Jimmy Morales attending -- hot on the heels of the US, while the government in Asuncion said Paraguay's embassy would switch to Jerusalem at the end of this month.Honduras, which voted with the US and Israel on the December 21 UN resolution, is yet to decide on relocating from Tel Aviv, despite parliamentary approval for the move.Significantly, Panama's President Juan Carlos Varela, is to attend Wednesday's opening of the new Guatemalan embassy as Morales' guest.- 'Servile' Morales -Jerusalem's status is perhaps the thorniest issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Israel considers the entire city its capital, while the Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.Marcio Palacios, a political scientist at Guatemala's San Carlos University, described Morales' decision as "servile" and said it was in part governed by his evangelical religious beliefs. The president "does not distinguish between what he represents and what he believes in," Palacios said.Evangelicals want to see the Jews rebuild their temple in Jerusalem, which according to their beliefs would facilitate the Second Coming of Christ."It's a servile action by the president, who has his hands tied to the policy of the United States," said Palacios.Morales' decision is also seen by some as a gesture to elicit US support at a time when he stands accused by Guatemalan prosecutors of accepting illegal campaign contributions.Former Guatemalan foreign minister Gabriel Orellana said Morales' decision has the effect of banishing his country "to the fringes of the United Nations"."Guatemala is sacrificing its place in a multicultural world for a bilateral relationship. That doesn't bring great benefits to the country and puts it at a disadvantage vis-a-vis other countries of the Arab world," he said.He also warned that beyond possible trade repercussions on Guatemala's important cardamom exports, the embassy move raises the possibility the country could become a target for terrorism."Until now, we have fortunately been spared by such events, but the world has become so polarized that we cannot with any certainty say nothing like this will happen in Guatemala as a result of this situation."Guatemala and Paraguay "are following the United States' agenda," because they are relatively small and poor, said Patricio Navia, of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL)."The weaker these countries are, the more they are under pressure," he said.Navia too said he feared countries that followed the US cue could pay a price."Not only Guatemala, but these countries that supported this decision will be targeted in the future. We hope that we're wrong."- Will other countries follow? -Both Israel and the Palestinians have lobbied hard for support in the region."We hope that some countries of the American continent will not transfer their embassy to Jerusalem because this is contrary to international law," Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas said last Monday during a visit to Caracas, flanked by Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro.Abbas was on a tour of Venezuela, Chile and Cuba. Most Latin American countries condemned the idea of moving the US embassy when Trump first broached it in 2017, and insisted they would keep their own missions in Tel Aviv. But countries with fragile economies are likely to be further tested.Last September, Benjamin Netanyahu made the first visit by an Israeli premier to Latin America, dangling lucrative trade contracts along with a delegation of 30 business leaders.Gaspard Estrada, head of the Observatory on Latin America at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, said Israel was "taking advantage of a swing to the right in the region" to court its leaders.Navia said he wouldn't be surprised "if other Central American countries follow suit, but it seems to me that it is more difficult for the bigger and more powerful countries in the region to do so."

Floods, wildfires spark evacuation concerns for northern Albertans-[CBC]-May 15, 2018

After a spring of flooding followed by wildfires, some residents of Mackenzie County are concerned about their ability to quickly evacuate in the event of a major emergency.Nine wildfires burning in the High Level forest area Saturday prompted the most recent emergency alert for Mackenzie County, an area of northern Alberta larger than Prince Edward Island. The wildfires temporarily closed Highways 58 and 35, and some residents were on standby for a possible evacuation. The wildfires were brought under control Sunday and the local state of emergency was cancelled. But for residents, it's all too close on the heels of major flooding in the area just two weekends earlier, which also prompted emergency alerts, evacuations and closed roads.Grace Alarcon-Isla lived in Rainbow Lake for 10 years before moving to Edmonton two years ago. Her husband still works in the town of around 800 people.Rainbow Lake, a town of about 800, is located about 140 kilometres west of High Level, near where Highway 58 ends in muskeg near the B.C. border. The town is surrounded by dense boreal forest.Alarcon-Isla says she's concerned about how residents would get out quickly in the event of a major wildfire."We only have literally one highway out. There's no other highway to get in and out," she said."With the Fort McMurray fire, it was like an eye-opener for everybody. If it were to happen to Rainbow Lake it would be very, very, very difficult to evacuate."She believes that evacuation by air would be the only recourse for residents.Alarcon-Isla said residents know to always have a bag packed in case an emergency forces them to leave.Windy weather makes people nervous, she says, because wind fuels fire.Mackenzie County Reeve Peter Braun said 50 km/h winds posed a problem Saturday as emergency crews fought the wildfires in temperatures that went up to 25 C.At least two houses were lost in the wildfires, he said. Because all available fire crews and local farmers were dealing with the wildfires, a local state of emergency was declared in case provincial assistance was needed.Officials do their best to prepare Mackenzie County residents for wildfire season, Braun said. But in the event of a massive evacuation, he couldn't immediately say how the county would direct it. "We would do our best, but how would it go over? That would be a challenge, definitely," he said. The High Level area has already had 56 wildfires this year, according to Alberta Wildfire. As of May 13, 42 of them have been extinguished. Fourteen are still active, the most of anywhere in the province.'I've never been worried up until yesterday' Heather Kazonay lives on the Beaver First Nation, around 40 kilometres east of High Level along Highway 58.On Saturday, she saw water bombers passing overhead every couple of minutes. With Highway 58 closed for part of the day, the main access road to the community of about 1,000 was impassable.Early Sunday morning, a fire started in the community and almost took down a house, she said. She said she's thankful for the firefighters who got the fires under control, but it got her thinking about the possibility of a bigger wildfire."Yesterday, the winds were so bad and winds were shifting. If something were to ever happen I think a lot of people would be stuck and stranded," she said."I've never been worried up until yesterday. Just because it was so close and there were nine fires around the area yesterday."

Huge fissure opens on Hawaiian volcano; some defy evacuation order-[Reuters]-By Terray Sylvester-YAHOONEWS-May 15, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - A massive new fissure opened on Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, hurling bursts of rock and magma with an ear-piercing screech on Sunday as it threatened nearby homes within a zone where authorities had just ordered an evacuation. The fissure, a vivid gouge of magma with steam and smoke pouring out both ends, was the 17th to open on the volcano since it began erupting on May 3. Dozens of homes have been destroyed and hundreds of people forced to evacuate in the past 10 days.As seen from a helicopter, the crack appeared to be about 1,000 feet (300 meters) long and among the largest of those fracturing the side of Kilauea, a 4,000-foot-high (1,200-meter-high) volcano with a lake of lava at its summit."It is a near-constant roar akin to a full-throttle 747 interspersed with deafening, earth-shattering explosions that hurtle 100-pound (45-kg) lava bombs 100 feet (30 meters) into the air," said Mark Clawson, 64, who lives uphill from the latest fissure and so far is defying an evacuation order.Tina Neal, the scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, described "spatter that is flying tens of meters into the air." The lava flow was "sluggish," she said."The situation down there remains dynamic and as we've been saying for days now the outbreaks can continue to occur both uprift and downrift of the existing fissure system, or the existing fissures could be reactivated," Neal said in a video message from the summit of the volcano.Civil Defense officials on Sunday ordered people living on Halekamahina Road to evacuate and be on the alert for gas emissions and lava spatter. Nearby vacation rentals were directed to cease operations to conserve water and enable emergency operations to concentrate on year-round residents.A pair of structures sat about 100 yards (100 meters) beneath the new fissure on the hillside. One structure was destroyed, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported, citing a spokeswoman for Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim, making it the 37th structure lost since May 3."We are keeping track of lava bombs. One went through the lanai (porch) roof of a neighbor's house," Clawson said.Neighbors sometimes douse the projectiles with water, Clawson said, adding that about eight to 10 people in the neighborhood have stayed in their homes.Meanwhile, other fissures continued to billow smoke over homes in Pahoa, on the western point of the Big Island of Hawaii, the largest of the Hawaiian islands.(Reporting by Terray Sylvester in Pahoa and Jolyn Rosa in Honolulu; Writing by Daniel Trotta; Editing by Paul Simao and Daniel Wallis)

EARTHQUAKES

EZEKIEL 37:7,11-14
7  So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.(POSSIBLE QUAKE BRINGS ISRAEL BACK TO LIFE-SO NOISE AND SHAKING-QUAKES WILL ALSO DESTROY ISRAELS ENEMIES)
11  Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:7-8
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

MARK 13:8

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places,(DIFFERNT PLACES AT THE SAME TIME) and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
