Iran, Russia, Turkey team up to hold sway in Syria-Presidents of the three countries, long seen as regional rivals rather than strategic allies, will meet in Ankara for their second summit-By Raziye AKKOC and Ezzedine SAID-TOI-3 April 2018
ANKARA, Turkey (AFP) — Iran, Russia and Turkey have teamed up to forge a strong if brittle tripartite alliance aimed at holding ascendancy in Syria, taking advantage of the West’s reluctance to engage militarily in the country. The presidents of the three countries, long seen as regional rivals rather than strategic allies, will meet Wednesday in Ankara for their second three-way summit on Syria in a striking demonstration of unity. This meeting, which follows the first tripartite summit between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Vladimir Putin of Russia, and Iran’s Hassan Rouhani in Sochi last November, comes with Turkey seeking a louder voice after launching an offensive against Kurdish militia inside Syria.US President Donald Trump has signaled that Washington will be withdrawing “very soon” from Syria, in a move that would cement the influence of Ankara, Moscow, and Tehran, who have all committed military forces to the ground.Sinan Ulgen, chairman of the Istanbul-based Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies think-tank, said the three countries had now become the true masters on the ground in Syria.Ulgen told AFP that the three have “been the regional powers that were willing to invest military resources to influence the outcome of the conflict.”The three countries last year launched a parallel peace process to the UN-backed talks in Geneva. The talks, based in Astana, have convened multiple times albeit without finding any breakthrough.“The Astana process is a vehicle through which Turkey, Russia, and Iran, are looking to manage the war and secure their various interests,” said Elizabeth Teoman, a Turkey analyst at the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).Russia has substantial air power in Syria while Iran has a strong presence on the ground, partly through militia groups which include foreign fighters. But Erdogan has increased Turkey’s influence by launching in January an offensive to capture territory from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia. The offensive has already succeeded in capturing the former YPG bastion of Afrin and Erdogan has repeatedly threatened to advance the push further east.“Erdogan is a weaker partner in terms of ground forces and control over airspace. But he has built up leverage and proven he can create facts on the ground,” Teoman said.Yet analysts remain skeptical about the long term viability of an alliance between three powers who spent much of their imperial history at war and vying for influence in the Black Sea region. In theory they also remain on different sides of the conflict — with Moscow and Tehran giving military support to the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad but Turkey repeatedly calling for Assad’s ouster.Turkey’s focus now is to prevent the YPG from controlling an area that could form the base of a long autonomous region in postwar Syria from the Iraqi border to the Mediterranean.Turkish officials say this would be a threat to national security.Russia, meanwhile, wants to be able to extricate itself from Syria and not be bogged down in any quagmire reminiscent of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. But Iran’s priority is to win the major political influence so it can call the shots like in Iraq.“Russia and Turkey have shared interests, but those interests are against Iran and the regime’s, so you have Moscow trying to stage manage three partners that hate each other,” said Aaron Stein, senior resident fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East.Moscow and Ankara claim to have made up following the crisis that followed when Turkey shot down a Russian plane over Syria in 2015 and Putin will meet with Erdogan for a bilateral meeting on Tuesday.Turkish officials acknowledge that Ankara could not have launched its operation against the YPG without a green light from Moscow.“We wouldn’t even have been able to put up a drone there!” Erdogan’s advisor Ilnur Cevik told CNN Turk broadcaster.Yet relations between Ankara and Moscow are never plain sailing and Turkey has been bitterly critical of the assault by Moscow’s ally Assad on rebel-held Eastern Ghouta.Turkish-Iranian relations have the potential to be even more tricky and Ankara has expressed uneasiness over Tehran’s attitude towards Kurdish rebels.Tehran angered Turkey by urging it to end its Syria offensive while Cevik accused Iran of cooperating with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).“Iran does not want Turkey to be strong,” he said.Jennifer Cafarella, a Syria expert at ISW, described Erdogan’s relationship with Iran and Russia as an “alignment of convenience.”“He’ll remain aligned with them as long as he deems it necessary to pursue his goals against the YPG,” she said.

Analysis-What we know and don’t about Friday’s Gaza protests-Following the mass march and violence in which the IDF killed 16 people, the battle shifts to public opinion: Were they unarmed protesters or dangerous terrorists?-By Judah Ari Gross-APR 3,18-TOI

Three days after the deadliest day in the Gaza Strip since the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas, significant questions — factual, legal, and moral — abound, regarding what happened on both sides of the security fence. What exactly were the 16 Palestinians who were killed — and the many more who were injured — doing when they were shot by IDF troops on Friday? Did their actions warrant the use of lethal force? How else could the IDF have responded to the protests? Tens of thousands of Palestinians took part in the demonstrations along the Gaza fence, marking “Land Day,” a commemoration of the expropriation of Arab land in the Galilee by the Israeli government on March 30, 1976, and subsequent protests in which six Arab Israelis were killed. It was the start of a six-week “March of Return,” which will end in mid-May with both “Nakba Day,” marking the displacement of Arabs after Israel’s creation, and the transfer of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a move that has infuriated Palestinian leaders. The March of Return is an annual event, but this year’s protest in Gaza got significant support from the Hamas terror group that rules the Strip. In addition to the civilians organizing the protest, who maintained that it would be peaceful, there were figures like Khaled al-Batsh, a senior figure in the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, adding to the complex nature of the protest — part legitimate, part nefarious. On Sunday, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry reported that 15 people were killed from Israeli gunfire during the protests and 1,479 were injured, more than half from live fire and the rest from Israel’s less-lethal riot dispersal measures. One of those injured died of his wounds on Monday morning, bringing the tally to 16 fatalities.IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis rejected the Gaza ministry’s figures of people injured by live fire, saying the true figure was dramatically lower.“There were not hundreds of people injured by gunshots. The overwhelming majority were wounded by riot dispersal means,” he said.Among the dead were two men who, armed with AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades, opened fire on Israeli soldiers and attempted to breach the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip, before they were shot by IDF infantrymen and a tank, according to the army. The military later provided video footage of the attack from its surveillance cameras along the fence, as well as photographs of the weapons.Manelis directly blamed the failed attack on Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar. “There’s no way a terror attack is going to take place without Haniyeh and Sinwar’s approval,” Manelis told reporters on Monday.According to the IDF, the other Palestinians killed were shot in accordance with its rules of engagement, but it has provided little evidence of what exactly happened.Manelis said that in the course of Friday, the IDF documented three attempts to place improvised explosive devices along the fence and five attempts to break through the fence with wire cutters, as well as multiple cases of people throwing burning tires at the fence. He refused to detail what each of the people shot was suspected of doing and rejected calls for external investigations.“We don’t need to answer to the world about every bullet that’s fired,” he said. Some video evidence has called into question the army’s claims that everyone shot represented a clear threat, notably in the case of Abd el-Fatah Abd a-Nabi, who appeared to have been targeted while running a significant distance from the fence, holding a tire.Manelis would not discuss the specifics of that case, but noted that the video in question was edited and did not show the period immediately before a-Nabi was shot.He said that in the army’s view, considering the number of people who took part and the violent nature of the actions on the border, the number of fatalities was “very reasonable.”Of the 16 killed, 11 appeared to have been affiliated with terror organizations, he noted, mostly Hamas, but also Fatah’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Islamic Jihad, and a salafist group. This army’s identification of these operatives is largely supported by acknowledgements by the terrorist organizations themselves, and by photographs of the men either in uniform or receiving military-style funerals, although some could not be immediately substantiated.Asked about the videos that appeared to show people being shot while relatively far away from the fence, the spokesperson said the army was investigating every shooting from Friday. “Some things look bad on film, and it’s possible there were mistakes,” he said.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman similarly rebuffed calls for external inquiries on Saturday.Following Friday’s protests, countries around the world expressed concern over the number of people killed.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for “those concerned to refrain from any act that could lead to further casualties.” France called on Israel to show restraint. And Kuwait tried to get the United Nations to condemn Israel for its military response, but failed after the United States vetoed the proposed resolution.Manelis took considerable umbrage at the view that Israel was to blame for Friday’s violence and put the responsibility on Hamas, which helped organize the protest.“Israel didn’t initiate this. We didn’t want it to happen,” he said.During the demonstrations, an estimated 30,000 Palestinians took part at six main locations east of major cities and towns along the coastal enclave. Most of the participants stayed several hundred meters back from the security fence separating Gaza from Israel. Photographs and footage from that area showed people dancing and families enjoying barbecues. But a portion of the protesters, most of them young men and some young women, came closer to the security fence — within a few dozen meters — lighting fires or using slingshots to hurl rocks at Israeli troops on the other side.A smaller number went right up to the fence. Footage released by the military and some videos circulating on social media showed mostly young men throwing Molotov cocktails or burning tires at the metal barrier.According to Manelis, terror groups also tried to take advantage of the chaos to plant improvised explosive devices along the fence in three cases. The military provided no visual evidence of this.During the protest, Israeli troops used tear gas — fired from both handheld grenade launchers and by specially designed drones — as well as rubber bullets and live fire against the Palestinian rioters. The military maintains that, in accordance with its rules of engagement, live fire was only used against those who represented a direct threat to the Israeli soldiers or to the security fence. One of the issues in assessing the army’s actions on Friday is in the amount of information that is unknown or disputed, from the number of people shot to what exactly each of them was doing at the time, said Eliav Lieblich, a senior lecturer at Tel Aviv University’s faculty of law.Without that information, it is difficult to accurately determine if those shot indeed represented a threat, as the IDF claims, or not. This is a problem not only when investigating the 16 reported fatalities, but also the many others who were hit by live bullets, according to Lieblich, who co-wrote a legal brief on the potential difficulties with the army’s tactics.Another graphic video from a far smaller demonstration on Sunday appeared to show a Palestinian teenager being shot in the head as he stood near a pile of burning tires, but did not seem to be presenting a clear threat to either IDF soldiers or the security fence.“When you have 800 people reportedly injured by live fire, it makes you think about the rules of engagement,” Lieblich said over the phone.Manelis said the army would be conducting its own internal investigations, as it does with any case that results in a death outside of a strict combat setting. In the lead-up to Friday’s protest, the military made it clear that its most immediate concern was a massive rush toward Israeli territory by thousands or tens of thousands of Gazans, along the lines of what happened along the Lebanese and Syrian borders in June 2011, when mobs broke through perimeter fences into Israel and several Lebanese and Syrian nationals were killed in the ensuing bedlam, some by Israeli troops and others by the Lebanese military. On Monday, the spokesperson said that was exactly what the army was preparing for.“Haniyeh had said, ‘We will cut the fence and go to Jerusalem,'” Manelis noted. His refrain throughout his phone call with reporters was “Imagine what could have happened.”A mass inrush did not occur.Perhaps the massive breach was never a credible threat and only talk by the Hamas leader, designed to frighten Israeli citizens and put the military on edge. But Manelis maintained that it was a real danger, averted “only because of how Israel acted” on Friday.“We prevented a catastrophe,” he said.Asked how the army would respond if masses of Palestinians did indeed move to break through the fence and march on nearby Israeli communities, Manelis said the army had practiced responding to such scenarios, but that he would “rather not think about that,” as the results would surely be bloody.A breach of the fence or attempts to damage it do not in and of themselves amount to an action that warrants lethal force, according to Lieblich. The army’s implication that an attack on the security fence could lead to mobs of people rushing into Israel, which could spell “catastrophe,” does not hold water as a legal argument, Lieblich said. “You don’t know for a fact what is going to happen next,” he said.Lieblich stressed, however, that this pertains only to the attempts to sabotage or break through the fence; not to any attempts to plant explosives or attack troops with rocks and firebombs, which much more clearly represent a threat to life.Manelis, for his part, said that “‘life threatening’ is a subjective issue.”Identifying terrorist operatives-One of the more irregular things to come out this weekend was a list of the names, ages, hometowns, pictures and terrorist affiliations of 10 of the 16 fatalities that was published by the IDF on Saturday night. (Israel did not identify an 11th suspected terrorist operative, though Islamic Jihad publicly claimed him as a member.)-The army included a-Nabi in its list of Hamas members. In a poster, Hamas referred to him as a “martyred mujahadeen,” a term it generally reserves for its fallen fighters. His family has denied that he was affiliated with the organization.Usually, even long after the identities of terrorists are publicized in the media or released by the Shin Bet security service, the army generally refrains from referring to them by name, instead referring to them in official communiques as “the terrorist who killed X” or “the terrorist who committed this or that car-ramming/stabbing/shooting.”The army was able to release the information on the Gaza fatalities within a day due in some part to its improved camera equipment on the border, but mostly because of the wealth of open-source information on social media, something that was not as available in the past. The army’s unusual move of releasing the identities appears to have been an attempt to strengthen the message that Israeli officials have been spreading for weeks: This was not a peaceful civilian protest, but one orchestrated by terrorist groups for their own purposes.“A demonstration doesn’t include people burning tires and shooting,” Manelis said. What else could have been done? While the IDF may be able to legally justify its use of lethal force, that does not mean that it was necessary in every case.“My impression is that we, to a certain extent, may have been too quick to fire at a demonstration that I’m not sure endangered our soldiers and that I’m not sure would have trampled the fence and seen masses getting into Israel,” former IDF general Giora Eiland told The Times of Israel on Monday. The army used a relatively limited array of less-lethal riot dispersal measures on Friday, mostly just tear gas and rubber bullets. The army’s rules of engagement for live fire also led to a large number of dead Palestinians. Even if the army sees this as “reasonable,” it has led some to ask whether the IDF would do better to change those protocols.Commentators have also questioned why the army did not rely on other riot dispersal tools it has at its disposal, like the noxious “skunk” spray that smells like rotting flesh and sewage, or bring in additional forces from the Border Police, who are meant to be better trained at responding to riots.Others have suggested the use of less-lethal riot dispersal weapons from other countries, like the American defense contractor Raytheon’s Active Denial System, which fires energy similar to microwaves at demonstrators, warming the water on the skin until they are forced back because of the painful heat.According to Manelis, however, the army has no plans to fundamentally change its methods if the protests planned for this coming Friday take place as scheduled in Gaza.“We will use the same forces, the same equipment and the same tactics,” he said.

Russia claims UK could have been behind spy’s poisoning-Moscow says nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal 'could be in the interests of the British government' or special forces-By Anna MALPAS-TOI-APR 3,18
MOSCOW, Russia (AFP) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday suggested Britain could be behind the poisoning of a former double agent that has triggered an unprecedented wave of tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats.More than 150 Russian diplomats have been ordered out of the US, EU members, NATO countries and other nations as punishment for the March attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the English city of Salisbury which Britain has blamed on Moscow. The counterclaims from Moscow came as the last Russian diplomats were leaving the countries where they were posted.Four Russian diplomats expelled from Germany arrived back in Moscow on the weekend, Russia’s embassy in Berlin said, ahead of a Monday deadline imposed on Moscow.A Russian diplomat also left Macedonia along with family members earlier Monday. The Kremlin has vehemently denied the accusations that it was behind the nerve agent attack and ordered Britain and its allies to recall some of their envoys from Russia. On Monday, Moscow’s top diplomat Lavrov told a news conference that the Skripal attack “could be in the interests of the British government which found itself in an uncomfortable situation having failed to fulfill promises to its electorate about the conditions for Brexit.”He reiterated that Moscow had no reason to poison Skripal — whom it convicted of treason and handed over in a 2010 spy swap — on the eve of a presidential election in March and months before Russia hosts the World Cup.Lavrov suggested that the poisoning of the Skripals “could also be in the interests of the British special forces who are known for their abilities to act with a license to kill.”At the same time, he denied the attack’s “sophistication” meant it was likely to have been approved by the Russian leadership, as CNN cited a source briefed on the investigation as saying.“If I understand correctly, sophisticated attacks usually lead to instant death,” Lavrov said.Britain has called it “highly likely” that Russia was responsible for the attack using a nerve agent developed in the USSR.Lavrov also accused Britain, the US and its allies of “casting off all decency” and “resorting to lies and disinformation.”He insisted that “serious experts and “leaders of a whole number of countries” were questioning Britain’s account of the crime.“How far we all go” did not depend on Russia, he said, adding Moscow would follow “the principle of reciprocity.”Britain has dismissed the various, often contradictory, theories, that Russia has put forward, with even the Foreign Office publicly mocking them on social media.Lavrov complained that the British authorities have still not given consular access to “our citizens,” and that the situation had not changed despite Yulia Skripal’s improved condition. He said he hoped Sergei Skripal would also get better.Moscow has sought to punish Britain for calling on allies to expel Russian diplomats, saying Saturday London must reduce its diplomatic presence in the country by more than 50 more diplomats, to achieve “parity” with Russia’s diplomatic staff in Britain.Russia had earlier expelled 23 British diplomats and last week told envoys from 23 other countries that some of their staff must go home.Separately, a top Kremlin aide said Monday that US President Donald Trump proposed a White House summit when he called President Vladimir Putin last month, prior to the expulsion of Russian diplomats from the US.In Washington, officials dismissed the statement from Putin’s top foreign policy aide, Yury Ushakov.A senior US administration official said “it’s obviously in their interest” to publicise the summit invitation as Putin’s risks deeper international isolation after the Skripal attack.White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the two leaders had discussed a bilateral meeting “at a number of potential venues, including the White House.”On March 20, Trump called Putin to congratulate him on his re-election, and the US leader told reporters afterwards that the two would “probably get together in the not-too-distant future.”Both the US official and Ushakov said that planning for the meeting had not yet begun.Ushakov expressed the hope that Russia and the United States could return to “constructive and serious dialogue.”After the phone call, Washington expelled 60 Russian diplomats and shut down a Russian consulate in Seattle.Moscow responded by sending home 60 US diplomats and closing Washington’s consulate in Saint Petersburg.Washington has, however, said Russia was free to apply to accredit more diplomats to replace those expelled.

Netanyahu accuses EU, New Israel Fund of pressing Rwanda to nix migrants deal-Left-wing group rails against PM's 'pathetic, shameful' accusations, says it has nothing to do with Kigali's refusal to cooperate with 'cruel' deportations-By TOI staff-APR 3,18

The New Israel Fund on Monday night railed against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his “pathetic, shameful” accusations that the left-wing organization put pressure on Rwanda to reject the Israeli government’s proposed resettlement of African migrants in the country.“In recent weeks, amid enormous pressure on Rwanda by the New Israel Fund and sources in the European Union, Rwanda has withdrawn from the agreement and refused to accept infiltrators from Israel that were forcibly deported,” the prime minister wrote in a Facebook post on Monday evening, after a chaotic day in which he announced a deal with the UN refugee agency on the African asylum seekers, and then, hours later, suspended the agreement.Netanyahu was referring to earlier government plans to deport tens of thousands of African migrants in Israel illegally, most of them from Eritrea and Sudan, to Rwanda and Uganda.“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again resorted to lies about the New Israel Fund in order to score cheap political points. The New Israel Fund had nothing to do with Rwanda’s decision to refuse to participate in the Prime Minister’s cruel mass deportation plan,” the New Israel Fund said in a statement.“It is pathetic, shameful, and a stain on Israel in the global arena that the Prime Minister would blame Israel’s human rights defenders for his ineptitude and his immoral policies,” it added. The European Union’s mission in Israel also addressed the accusation in a tongue-in-cheek Twitter post.Guess it's just one of those days. At 20:57 you congratulate #Israel & @refugees on their agreement, at 21:46 you like @IsraelMFA announcement on the deal, at 22:50 the PM suspends it and blames, among others, #EU (where #UNHCR hoped to resettle significant number of refugees).— EU in Israel (@EUinIsrael) April 2, 2018-In his earlier remarks on the agreement, Netanyahu had said the previous Israeli plan to deport migrants to Rwanda and Uganda was no longer feasible. He stressed that “legal constraints as well as political difficulties on the part of [Uganda and Rwanda]” led to the cancellation of previous deportation policies. The earlier deportation policy, which offered each migrant $3,500 and a plane ticket, had been condemned by Israeli activists and the United Nations as poorly executed and unsafe. Asylum seekers previously deported to Uganda and Rwanda have told The Times of Israel they faced serious danger and even imprisonment after arriving in Africa without proper documents. The Supreme Court froze the deportations in mid-March in response to a petition. In the afternoon, at a press conference alongside Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, Netanyahu had praised the new deal with the UN refugee agency, saying that it would see some 16,250 African migrants in Israel resettled in “developed” Western countries, while a similar number would be given temporary residency.“This agreement will allow for the departure from Israel of 16,250 migrants to developed countries like Canada or Germany or Italy,” Netanyahu said, without elaborating. Other reports said the United States and Sweden would also take in some of the number.German and Italian diplomats on Monday evening told Hebrew media they had not signed agreements to absorb African migrants from Israel.Backtracking on the UNHCR deal, Netanyahu on Monday night said he was freezing the agreement in response to protests by Israelis.“I hear you, and especially the residents of south Tel Aviv,” Netanyahu said in a (Hebrew) Facebook post amid mounting right-wing criticism of the deal. “For the time being, I am suspending the agreement,” he added, noting that he would meet with Deri and residents of south Tel Aviv, where many of the migrants reside, before reconsidering it.The prime minister was subsequently accused by opposition lawmakers  of caving to pressure by his coalition partners, who have expressed disapproval of the plan and said they were not consulted.

Israel will cancel plans to expel asylum seekers to third-party countries in Africa after reaching an “unprecedented” deal with the United Nations, the Prime Minister’s Office announced Monday.According to the agreement, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees  will work to find homes in Western countries for at least 16,250 of the asylum seekers in Israel, while Israel will agree to give temporary status to the remainder — also estimated at around 16,250. The US, Canada, Sweden, Italy and Germany were reported to be among the countries to take in the migrants. The PMO said most of those who will stay would have remained in Israel in any event. The new deal is to be phased in over the next five years in three stages, though the PMO did not specify the details. The new plan, under the auspices of the United Nations, will replace the previous plan, which had been due to go into effect Sunday, which was to expel the migrants to unnamed third-party countries, believed to be Rwanda and Uganda — although both have denied involvement in the plan. The earlier deportation policy, which offered each migrant $3,500 and a plane ticket, had been condemned by Israeli activists and the United Nations as chaotic, poorly executed, and unsafe. Asylum seekers previously deported to Uganda and Rwanda have told the Times of Israel they faced serious danger and even imprisonment after arriving in Africa without proper documents. The Supreme Court froze the deportations in mid-March in response to a petition. The PMO said that the new plan had been approved by the attorney general and was in keeping with international law and practice. At the same time the PMO announced a special committee, headed by former Kadima MK Avigdor Yitzhaki, to improve the quality of life in south Tel Aviv, where many of the asylum seekers live.In addition, as part of the deal, the government will focus on providing occupational guidance, vocational training and other assistance to the migrants to help them integrate into Israel. It will also work to disperse them around the country, so that they will not be concentrated in a single area.Human rights activists in Israel and major US Jewish organizations had long urged the Israeli government not to go ahead with its plan to force the migrants to choose between jail and deportation.

2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

Saudi crown prince recognizes Israel’s right to exist, talks up future ties-Mohammed bin Salman tells Atlantic the Iranian ayatollah is 'worse than Hitler' because he is 'trying to conquer the world'-By TOI staff-3 April 2018
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in an interview published Monday,  recognized Israel’s right to exist and extolled the prospect of future diplomatic relations between his kingdom and the Jewish state. In an extensive interview with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, Prince Mohammed laid out his vision for the future of the Middle East, including the possibility of cooperation with Israel.Asked whether he believes “the Jewish people have a right to a nation-state in at least part of their ancestral homeland,” he replied: “I believe that each people, anywhere, has a right to live in their peaceful nation. I believe the Palestinians and the Israelis have the right to have their own land.”However, in keeping with the terms of his kingdom’s regional peace proposal, the Saudi crown prince added that an agreement with the Palestinians was a prerequisite to formal relations. “But we have to have a peace agreement to assure the stability for everyone and to have normal relations,” he said.Did he have “no religious-based objection to the existence of Israel?” he was further asked. To which the crown prince replied: “We have religious concerns about the fate of the holy mosque in Jerusalem and about the rights of the Palestinian people. This is what we have. We don’t have any objection against any other people.”Asked about anti-Semitism in Saudi Arabia, he said: “Our country doesn’t have a problem with Jews. Our Prophet Muhammad married a Jewish woman. Not just a friend — he married her. Our prophet, his neighbors were Jewish. You will find a lot of Jews in Saudi Arabia coming from America, coming from Europe. There are no problems between Christian and Muslims and Jews. We have problems like you would find anywhere in the world, among some people. But the normal sort of problems.”Israel and Saudi Arabia have no official relations and the kingdom does not recognize the Jewish state. Israel has hinted at clandestine ties with Saudi Arabia in recent years, stressing the two countries share an interest in countering Iran. The rumors of covert relations have been denied by Saudi officials. Still, a Saudi general visited Jerusalem in 2016 and met with Israeli lawmakers, and Saudi officials have met with Israeli officials on several occasions in public; Saudi Arabia also last month allowed Air India to fly to and from Tel Aviv via its air space.Discussing a shared concern over Iran was bringing Israel and Saudi Arabia together, he said: “Israel is a big economy compared to their size and it’s a growing economy, and of course there are a lot of interests we share with Israel and if there is peace, there would be a lot of interest between Israel and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and countries like Egypt and Jordan.”Salman also discussed the threat to the Middle East he said was posed by Iran, even saying that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, “makes Hitler look good.”“Hitler didn’t do what the supreme leader is trying to do. Hitler tried to conquer Europe. This is bad,” he explained. “But the supreme leader is trying to conquer the world. He believes he owns the world. They are both evil guys. He is the Hitler of the Middle East. In the 1920s and 1930s, no one saw Hitler as a danger. Only a few people. Until it happened. We don’t want to see what happened in Europe happen in the Middle East. We want to stop this through political moves, economic moves, intelligence moves. We want to avoid war.”Asked about the differences in how former US president Barack Obama and his successor, Donald Trump, chose to deal with the Iranian threat, Salman said that although the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran aimed to curb the Islamic Republic’s fanaticism, it included risks his country could not afford to take.“President Obama believed that if he gave Iran opportunities to open up, it would change,” Salman explained. “But with a regime based on this ideology, it will not open up soon. Sixty percent of the Iranian economy is controlled by the Revolutionary Guard. The economic benefits of the Iran nuclear deal are not going to the people.“They took $150 billion after the deal — can you please name one housing project they built with this money? One park? One industrial zone? Can you name for me the highway that they built? I advise them — please show us something that you’re building a highway with $150 billion,” he said. “For Saudi Arabia, there is a 0.1 percent chance that this deal would work to change the country. For President Obama it was 50 percent. But even if there’s a 50 percent chance that it would work, we can’t risk it. The other 50 percent is war. We have to go to a scenario where there is no war.”In a major Saudi shakeup last year, Prince Mohammed pushed aside his older and more experienced cousin to become first in line to his father’s throne, setting himself up to control Saudi policy for decades to come. The Saudis are working aggressively to change perceptions. They’ve cast themselves as essential partners against Islamist extremist groups and, especially since Trump’s maiden overseas voyage last year, touted their lavish purchases of high-tech goods from job-creating American companies. In Yemen, the kingdom says it is improving military targeting, opening up ports and pledging $1.5 billion in new aid.The Associated Press contributed to this report.

11  Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
12  Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
14  And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

MATTHEW 24:7-8
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

MARK 13:8
8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:(ETHNIC GROUP AGAINST ETHNIC GROUP) and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

LUKE 21:11
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places,(DIFFERNT PLACES AT THE SAME TIME) and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

IDF girds for renewed clashes on tense Gaza border-Army fears Palestinian terrorist groups could launch rockets at southern Israel-By Judah Ari Gross and TOI staff-APR 1,18

The Israeli military was on high alert Sunday morning along the border of the Gaza Strip in anticipation of renewed clashes with Palestinian protesters.Sixteen demonstrators were killed by Israeli fire on Friday, 10 of them members of Palestinian terror groups, according to the Israel Defense Forces.Though the crowds had thinned and the fighting appeared to subside by Saturday, the army was expecting the Hamas terrorist group to inflame border tensions and set off additional violence, Hadashot news reported. The army also remained concerned that Palestinian terror groups could fire rockets at southern Israel, the TV report said. An army spokesman had originally raised that fear on Friday evening. On Friday, some 30,000 Palestinians took part in demonstrations along the Gaza border, during which rioters threw rocks and firebombs at Israeli troops on the other side of the fence, burned tires and scrap wood, sought to breach and damage the security fence, and in one case opened fire at Israeli soldiers. The army said that its sharpshooters targeted only those taking explicit violent action against Israeli troops or trying to break through or damage the security fence. Video footage showed that in one case a rioter, whom the army included in its list of Hamas members, appeared to be shot while running away from the border. The army in response accused Hamas of editing and/or fabricating its videos. The army on Saturday night identified 10 of the 16 people reported killed during violent protests along the Gaza security fence as members of Palestinian terrorist groups, and published a list of their names and positions in the organizations.According to the Israel Defense Forces (Arabic link), eight of the men killed were members of Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip. One served in the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, and another was affiliated with “global jihad,” it said, apparently referring to one of the Salafist groups in Gaza.Earlier on Saturday, Hamas publicly acknowledged that five members of its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, were among the fatalities. The army said that at least one of the Hamas members, Sari Abu Odeh, was part of the group’s elite Nukhba force and that another, Muhammad Abu Amro, served in its tunnel operations. (The IDF’s Arabic spokesman provided more details in Arabic via Twitter.) The IDF identified one of the two Hamas members who shot at Israeli soldiers on Friday evening and attempted to breach the security fence, before they were shot dead, as 23-year-old Mussa’b al-Saloul.Palestinian media reported that the bodies of the two gunmen were captured by Israeli soldiers. The IDF would not officially comment on this claim. The oldest operative identified was Jihad Farina, 35, a company commander in Hamas’s military wing; the youngest was 19-year-old Ahmad Odeh, who served in the terror group’s Shati Battalion, the army said.Hamas claimed those killed were taking part “in popular events side-by-side with their people.”The army did not provide evidence for its identifications. Some could be independently verified with photographic evidence of the operatives wearing uniforms or receiving a military-style funeral from the terror group in question. Others could not be immediately substantiated.Thousands attended funerals in Gaza Saturday for 14 of those killed — two were buried on Friday — with mourners holding Palestinian flags and some chanting “revenge” and firing into the air.“Where are you, Arabs? Where are you, Muslims?” mourners chanted at one funeral, calling on the Arab and Muslim world to intervene. A general strike was held in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said on Saturday that all those killed were engaged in violence, adding that Gaza health officials exaggerated the number of those wounded and that several dozen at most were injured by live fire while the rest were merely shaken up by tear gas and other riot dispersal means.Manelis said on Friday evening that the army had faced “a violent, terrorist demonstration at six points” along the fence. He said the IDF used “pinpoint fire” wherever there were attempts to breach or damage the security fence. “All the fatalities were aged 18-30, several of the fatalities were known to us, and at least two of them were members of Hamas commando forces,” he said. The Palestinians’ march to Gaza’s border with Israel on Friday was the largest such demonstration in recent memory, calling for Palestinians to be allowed to return to land that their ancestors fled from in the 1948 War of Independence. It was dubbed the “March of Return.”The death toll from Friday’s protest was provided by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, which also added that some 1,400 Palestinians were injured during the protests, over half by live rounds. Israeli authorities have no way to independently confirm the casualty reports.Manelis warned Saturday that if violence drags on along the Gaza border, Israel will expand its reaction to strike the terrorists behind it. The military has thus far restricted its response to those trying to breach its border, but if attacks continue it will go after terrorists “in other places, too,” he said.Manelis reiterated that Israel “will not allow a massive breach of the fence into Israeli territory.”He said that Hamas and other Gaza terror groups were using protests as a cover for staging attacks. If violence continues, “we will not be able to continue limiting our activity to the fence area and will act against these terror organizations in other places too,” he said.Hamas is an Islamist terror group that seeks to destroy Israel. It seized control of Gaza from Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah in a violent coup in 2007.Protest organizers have said mass marches would continue until May 15, the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel. Palestinians mark that date as their “nakba,” or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands left or were forced to leave during the 1948 War of Independence. The vast majority of Gaza’s two million people are their descendants. At previous peace talks, the Palestinians have always demanded, along with sovereignty in the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the Old City, a “right of return” to Israel for Palestinian refugees who left or were forced out of Israel when it was established. The Palestinians demand this right not only for those of the hundreds of thousands of refugees who are still alive — a figure estimated in the low tens of thousands — but also for their descendants, who number in the millions. No Israeli government would ever be likely to accept this demand, since it would spell the end of Israel as a Jewish-majority state. Israel’s position is that Palestinian refugees and their descendants would become citizens of a Palestinian state at the culmination of the peace process, just as Jews who fled or were forced out of Middle Eastern countries by hostile governments became citizens of Israel.Agencies contributed to this report.

Liberman threatens ‘much harsher’ response to further Gaza unrest-Defense minister claims 90% of 40,000 Palestinian protesters on Friday were paid Hamas activists and their families-By TOI staff-APR 1,18

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned Sunday that Israel would act with a far stronger hand if Palestinians in the Gaza Strip resumed Friday’s violent protests on the border with Israel, during which 15 Palestinians were killed. He claimed that of some 40,000 Palestinian protesters, 90 percent were officials and activists paid by the Hamas terror group, which rules the enclave, together with their families.Liberman also pledged that there would be no international inquiry into the clashes, despite demands to that effect by parts of the international community. And he lashed out at the new head of the left-wing Meretz Party for joining calls for a probe, charging that her party represented Palestinian, rather than Israeli, interests.During Friday’s so-called March of Return, rioters threw rocks and firebombs at Israeli troops on the other side of the fence, burned tires and scrap wood, sought to breach and damage the security fence, and in one case, opened fire at Israeli soldiers. The Israel Defense Forces said that at least 10 of the 15 dead were members of terror groups, while Hamas has acknowledged that five of them were gunmen from its military wing.On Saturday, the United States blocked a draft UN Security Council statement calling for an investigation of the incidents, according to diplomats.Representing Arab countries on the council, Kuwait had called for an “independent and transparent investigation” of the violence. The defense minister, who heads the hawkish Yisrael Beytenu party,  praised the army for having “carried out its work in the best possible way.” Summing up what he called Hamas’s “March of Terror,” he said, “We can say that the [Passover] festival passed quietly — no soldiers were hurt.”Threatening that the army “can respond much more harshly next time” and that it would not “hesitate to use everything we have,” he also expressed doubt that the Palestinians would seek to replicate Friday’s events, “in light of the results.”Liberman claimed that the Gaza march had cost its organizers $15 million. “Do you know how much medicine you could buy with a sum like this? The fact that [Hamas] budgets such a sum for blatant terror activities says it all.”Upping earlier Israeli analyses of the makeup of the protesters, Liberman charged that 90% of the more than 40,000 people who came to the border fence were “Hamas officials or activists who are paid salaries by Hamas, together with their families. The simple people didn’t come.”He claimed that those that did come were armed and disguised as non-violent protesters.“What is the attempt to break through the fence? It’s to harm our sovereignty,” he said. “Any state whose borders people tried to crash would act in an even more severe way than we did, and therefore the procession of hypocrites calling for a committee of inquiry must understand that there will be no such thing. There will not be any international inquiry. We will not cooperate with any inquiry of this kind.”On Saturday, Meretz party leader Tamar Zandberg called on Israeli authorities to open an investigation into the violence, indicating she thought the Israeli military appeared to have been too “trigger happy.”The death toll and the footage from the events broadcast on social media and elsewhere, including a video aired on Palestinian media apparently showing an 18-year-old being shot dead while running away from the border fence, “warrant an independent investigation by Israel, including a probe into the rules of engagement and the military and political readiness for the events,” Zandberg said.Liberman hit back, saying that for some time, Meretz had not been representing Israeli but rather Palestinian interests in the Knesset. He said Israel had tried diplomatic avenues to peace on two occasions — the Oslo Peace Accords during the 1990s and the unilateral Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip under the late prime minister Ariel Sharon in 2005 — but that Hamas had responded by investing millions in the production of missiles and tunnels.Friday’s clashes marked the bloodiest day since the 2014 Gaza war, kicking off what Gaza’s Hamas terrorist rulers envision as a campaign of mass sit-ins along the border meant to spotlight the demand of uprooted Palestinians and their descendants to “return” to what is now Israel. At previous peace talks, the Palestinians have always demanded, along with sovereignty in the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Old City, a “right of return” to Israel for Palestinian refugees who left or were forced out of Israel when it was established. Israel’s position is that Palestinian refugees and their descendants would become citizens of a Palestinian state at the culmination of the peace process, just as Jews who fled or were forced out of Middle Eastern countries by hostile governments became citizens of Israel.Hamas, which seized control of Gaza in 2007, seeks to destroy Israel.

Israel confirms it has bodies of 2 Hamas men killed in Friday shootout-Military liaison to Palestinians says remains won't be returned and 'Gaza won't know calm' until Hamas gives back 2 fallen IDF soldiers, 2 living Israeli civilians-By Judah Ari Gross-APR 1,18

Israel’s military liaison to the Palestinians on Sunday confirmed that the bodies of two Hamas gunmen who opened fire on IDF soldiers and were shot dead on Friday were being held by Israel, along with the remains of 24 other slain operatives.Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, the coordinator of government activities in the territories, wrote on his Arabic-language Facebook page that the remains of the 26 Palestinians would not be released until Hamas returned the two Israeli civilians and the remains of two fallen IDF soldiers that it is currently holding in Gaza.“Israel will not be silent and the residents of Gaza will not know peace until the Israelis are returned and our soldiers are brought to burial in Israel,” Mordechai wrote in Arabic. “There is a shared value for Judaism and Islam of burying the dead.”The bodies of two IDF soldiers — Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul — are being held by Hamas, along with two live, apparently mentally ill Israeli civilians — Abera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who entered Gaza of their own volition in 2014 and 2015, respectively. On Friday, Mussa’b Saloul and Muhammad Rubaiyah, armed with AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades, opened fire at Israeli soldiers and tried to break through the security fence before they were shot dead by troops. Israeli aircraft also later targeted Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip.Mordechai identified them as Mussa’b Saloul and Muhammad Rubaiyah.Palestinian media reported that IDF soldiers retrieved their bodies and that they were being held by Israeli authorities. The army would not confirm that claim until Sunday with Mordechai’s Facebook post.According to the general, the two slain gunmen “joined the 24 other bodies being held by Israeli since Operation Protective Edge” — Israel’s name for the 2014 Gaza war — “and the demolition of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad tunnel that was blown up in our territory in October 2017.”Mordechai laid the blame squarely at Hamas’s feet, saying the terrorist group “doesn’t care about the living or the dead and is preventing their Muslim burial.”On Friday, some 30,000 Palestinians took part in demonstrations along the Gaza border, during which rioters threw rocks and firebombs at Israeli troops on the other side of the fence, burned tires and scrap wood, sought to breach and damage the security fence, and in that one case opened fire at Israeli soldiers.IDF troops retaliated mostly with less-lethal riot dispersal means, namely tear gas and rubber bullets, but in some cases used live fire.According to the army, in keeping with its rules of engagement, the Palestinians who were shot were either attacking IDF soldiers with stones and Molotov cocktails, were actively trying to damage the security fence, or were attempting to place improvised explosive devices along the security fence, which could later be used in attacks against Israeli patrols. On Saturday night, the Israeli military identified 10 Palestinians killed on Friday as belonging to terrorist organizations, publishing their photographs, names and positions in the groups. Though the IDF identified Saloul as a Hamas member, Rubaiyah was not included in the army’s list.Earlier on Saturday, Hamas publicly acknowledged that five members of its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, were among the fatalities. Hamas is an Islamist terror group that seeks to destroy Israel. It seized control of Gaza from Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah in a violent coup in 2007.Mordechai’s post came shortly after the family of Hadar Goldin, one of the soldiers whose remains are held by Hamas, called on the government to not return the bodies of the two gunmen.“Israel has to use the bodies as a bargaining chip with Hamas and hold onto them until a solution has been found and the soldiers are returned,” Simcha Goldin, his father, said. The Goldin family contacted Mordechai as well as the government’s point person for the effort to retrieve the two fallen soldiers and two civilians, Yaron Blum. The family demanded that the government uphold a resolution it passed last year that bars Israel from returning the bodies of terrorists to their families and instead has them buried in temporary plots. Also on Sunday, the family of Mengistu, one of the two Israeli civilians captive in Gaza, launched a tent protest outside the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem, calling on the government to bring back Abera from Hamas captivity.

Erdogan calls Netanyahu a ‘terrorist’ over Gaza deaths-Israeli and Turkish leaders in war of words after Ankara criticizes IDF for its efforts to put down mass demonstrations along border; Jordan and Egypt also concerned-By AFP and TOI staff-APR 1,18

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday of being “a terrorist” after the Israeli prime minister rejected Ankara’s “moral lessons” over deadly clashes on the border with the Gaza Strip.“Hey Netanyahu! You are an occupier. And it is as an occupier that you are on those lands. At the same time, you are a terrorist,” Erdogan said in a televised speech in Adana, southern Turkey. Also Sunday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met in Cairo with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi to discuss the border clashes, the Hebrew-language Ynet website reported. In a joint press conference after their meeting Safadi said the international community needs to protect the Palestinians as they demand what he termed their “legitimate rights.”They said they reject violence towards the Palestinians and vowed that the Palestinians will be protected so that they can obtain their legitimate rights.Netanyahu earlier Sunday lashed out at Turkey in response to its president’s claim that Israel had mounted an “inhumane attack” on Palestinians during Friday’s mass protests on the border with Israel.“The most moral army in the world will not accept moral preaching from someone who for years has been bombing a civilian population indiscriminately,” he said, in apparent reference to Ankara’s ongoing battle against the Kurds.“That’s apparently how Ankara marks [April Fool’s Day],” Netanyahu tweeted in Hebrew, of the Turkish condemnation. On Saturday, Erdogan said during a speech in Istanbul, “I strongly condemn the Israeli government over its inhumane attack.”The Israel Defense Forces said Saturday that at least 10 of those killed — the Gazans reported a death toll of 15 — were members of Palestinian terror groups including Hamas.IDF spokesman Ronen Manelis said Friday the military faced “a violent, terrorist demonstration at six points” along the fence. He said the IDF used “pinpoint fire” wherever there were attempts to breach or damage the security fence. “All the fatalities were aged 18-30, several of the fatalities were known to us, and at least two of them were members of Hamas commando forces,” he said in a late afternoon statement. As of Saturday evening, Hamas, a terrorist group that openly seeks to destroy Israel, itself acknowledged that five of the dead in the so-called “March of Return” were its own gunmen. The IDF said that its sharpshooters targeted only those taking explicit violent action against Israeli troops or trying to break through or damage the security fence. At previous peace talks, the Palestinians have always demanded, along with sovereignty in the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Old City, a “right of return” to Israel for Palestinian refugees who left or were forced out of Israel when it was established. Israel’s position has generally been that Palestinian refugees and their descendants would become citizens of a Palestinian state at the culmination of the peace process, just as Jews who fled or were forced out of Middle Eastern countries by hostile governments became citizens of Israel.

Netanyahu: Israel rejects Turkey’s ‘moral preaching’ on Gaza-PM says Erdogan, who accused Israel of 'inhumane attack' on Palestinians along border, 'indiscriminately bombs civilians'-By TOI staff-APR 1,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday lashed out at Turkey in response to its president’s claim that Israel mounted an “inhumane attack” on Palestinians during Friday’s mass protests on the border with Israel.“The most moral army in the world will not accept moral preaching from someone who for years has been bombing a civilian population indiscriminately,” he said, in apparent reference to Ankara’s ongoing battle against the Kurds.“That’s apparently how Ankara marks [April Fool’s Day],” Netanyahu tweeted in Hebrew, of the Turkish condemnation. On Saturday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a speech in Istanbul, “I strongly condemn the Israeli government over its inhumane attack.”Also on Saturday, the speaker of Iran’s Parliament lashed out at what he called the “illegitimate and usurping Zionist regime” for its part in the clashes on the border between Gaza and Israel on Friday.Speaking as the chairman of the Tehran-based Parliamentary Union of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) member states, Ali Larijani charged that Israel was trying to destabilize the region together with US President Donald Trump, who in December recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced the relocation of the US Embassy there from Tel Aviv — a move due to take place in May.“The Zionists’ policy of creating tensions and crises along with Trump’s move in announcing the move of [the] US embassy to al-Quds [Jerusalem] are making up a dangerous plot targeting the stability and security of the region,” Larijani said, according to the Iranian Mehr news agency.“The only language that the terrorists ruling in Tel Aviv can understand is the language of force, and resistance is [the] only solution to counter the ambitious ends of the Zionist regime,” he said. The Israel Defense Forces said Saturday that at least 10 of those killed — the Gazans reported a death toll of 15 — were members of Palestinian terror groups including Hamas. On Saturday, the US blocked a draft UN Security Council statement urging restraint and calling for an investigation of the clashes on the Gaza-Israel border, diplomats said. Kuwait, which represents Arab countries on the council, had presented the proposed statement, which called for an “independent and transparent investigation” of the violence. The Palestinian Authority blamed the US and Britain for obstructing the Palestinian and Arab effort to persuade the Security Council to issue a resolution blasting Israel for the 15 Palestinian fatalities.Yusef al Mahmoud, spokesperson for the PA government in Ramallah, said Saturday that Washington and London’s opposition to a resolution condemning Israel “turns them into accomplices in the horrific massacre committed by the Israeli occupation army against our defenseless people.”IDF spokesman Ronen Manelis said Friday the military faced “a violent, terrorist demonstration at six points” along the fence. He said the IDF used “pinpoint fire” wherever there were attempts to breach or damage the security fence. “All the fatalities were aged 18-30, several of the fatalities were known to us, and at least two of them were members of Hamas commando forces,” he said in a late afternoon statement. As of Saturday evening, Hamas itself acknowledged that five of the dead in the so-called “March of Return” were its own gunmen. At previous peace talks, the Palestinians have always demanded, along with sovereignty in the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Old City, a “right of return” to Israel for Palestinian refugees who left or were forced out of Israel when it was established. Netanyahu refuses to say if he’d meet with Jeremy Corbyn-4 days after embattled UK Labour chief said he plans to visit Israel at some stage and would be happy to meet PM, Jerusalem officials pass the buck when asked if feeling is mutual-By Raphael Ahren-APR 1,18-TOI

Four days after Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the British Labour Party, said he would readily meet with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli leader’s aides are unwilling to say whether he’d agree to such a meeting.Last Wednesday, Corbyn told the UK’s Jewish News in an interview that he intends to visit Israel and meet Netanyahu “at some point,” though he added that he currently had no such plans.Asked if he’d be happy to meet Netanyahu, the embattled Labour leader replied: “Well, I will be visiting the State of Israel so yes, of course.”Asked Thursday by The Times of Israel whether Netanyahu would be equally happy to host Corbyn — a longtime critic of Israeli policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians who is also currently embroiled in a massive scandal for failing to tackle anti-Semitism in his party — the Prime Minister’s Office did not respond for several days.Netanyahu’s spokesperson for the English media, David Keyes, finally said on Sunday that “questions about diplomatic meeting with foreign political leaders should be asked of the Foreign Ministry, as that is [their] prime objective.”A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry then promptly referred The Times of Israel back to the prime minister, saying only his aides could speak for his willingness to meet with world leaders.Due to his pro-Palestinian views and the Labour Party’s anti-Semitism problem, Corbyn is viewed very critically by many British Jews and Israel supporters. His interview last week with the Jewish News of London was the first time he spoke to a Jewish news outlet since becoming Labour leader in September 2015.Last November, Netanyahu, who is also foreign minister, was asked during an interview with the BBC how he would react if Corbyn were to be elected prime minister.“Well, first of all the British people decide who they want to govern them, but I hope that there will be a continuity of British policy with Israel because here’s something people don’t know — that cooperation has saved many lives,” Netanyahu replied.“Intense security and intelligence cooperation has saved many Israeli and British lives, he went on. “And it’s something I hope will continue in the future.”

Family of slain soldier held by Hamas urges Israel to keep bodies of Gaza gunmen-Simcha Goldin, whose son's remains have been kept in Gaza since 2014, calls for government to uphold its resolution not to return fallen terrorists-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-APR 1,18

The Goldin family, whose son’s remains have been held in Gaza by Hamas since the 2014 war, called on the government to not return the bodies of two Hamas members who opened fire on Israeli troops and were shot dead on Friday.“Israel has to use the bodies as a bargaining chip with Hamas and hold onto them until a solution has been found and the soldiers are returned,” Simcha Goldin, the father of Lt. Hadar Goldin, said on Sunday. The bodies of two IDF soldiers — Goldin and Oron Shaul — are currently being held by the Hamas terrorist organization, along with two live, apparently mentally ill Israeli civilians — Abera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed — who entered Gaza of the own volition in 2014 and 2015, respectively.According to Palestinian media, following a shootout on Friday, Israeli soldiers retrieved the bodies of the two gunmen, and they are now being held by Israeli authorities. The Israel Defense Forces would not officially comment on the claim. However, on Sunday, the Goldin family contacted the government’s point person for the effort to retrieve the two fallen soldiers and two civilians, Yaron Blum, as well as Israel’s military coordinator to the Palestinians, Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai. The family demanded that the government uphold a resolution it passed last year that bars Israel from returning the bodies of terrorists to their families and instead has them buried in temporary plots. Also on Sunday, the family of Mengistu launched a tent protest outside the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem, calling on the government to bring back Abera from Hamas captivity. On Friday, some 30,000 Palestinians took part in demonstrations along the Gaza border, during which rioters threw rocks and firebombs at Israeli troops on the other side of the fence, burned tires and scrap wood, sought to breach and damage the security fence, and in the one case opened fire at Israeli soldiers. The IDF troops retaliated mostly with less-lethal riot dispersal means, namely tear gas and rubber bullets, but in some cases used live fire. The army said that its sharpshooters targeted only those taking explicit violent action against Israeli troops or trying to break through or damage the security fence. Video footage showed that in one case a rioter, whom the army included in its list of Hamas members, appeared to be shot while running away from the border. The army in response accused Hamas of editing and/or fabricating its videos.According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, 15 Palestinians were killed during these riots, including the two Hamas gunmen, armed with AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades, who tried to breach the security fence. On Saturday night, the Israeli military identified at least eight more of the people killed — 10 in total — as belonging to terrorist organizations, publishing their photographs, names and positions in the groups. The IDF identified one of the two Hamas members who shot at Israeli soldiers on Friday evening as 23-year-old Mussa’b al-Saloul.Earlier on Saturday, Hamas publicly acknowledged that five members of its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, were among the fatalities. Hamas is an Islamist terror group that seeks to destroy Israel. It seized control of Gaza from Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah in a violent coup in 2007.The army did not provide evidence for its identifications. Some could be independently verified with photographic evidence of the operatives wearing uniforms or receiving a military-style funeral from the terror group in question. Others could not be immediately substantiated. One appears to be partially incorrect, identifying an apparent member Fatah’s Al-Aqsa Martyr’s Brigades terrorist group as a member of Hamas. The Palestinians’ march to Gaza’s border with Israel on Friday was the largest such demonstration in recent memory, calling for Palestinians to be allowed to return to land that their ancestors fled from in the 1948 War of Independence. It was dubbed the “March of Return.”The death toll from Friday’s protest was provided by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, which also added that some 1,400 Palestinians were injured during the protests, more than half by live rounds. Israeli authorities have no way to independently confirm the casualty reports. The army has remained on high alert even as the violence appeared to abate Friday evening, amid fears of persisting attacks, including infiltration attempts and rocket fire.Protest organizers have said mass marches would continue until May 15, the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel. Israel’s position is that Palestinian refugees and their descendants would become citizens of a Palestinian state at the culmination of the peace process, just as Jews who fled or were forced out of Middle Eastern countries by hostile governments became citizens of Israel.Times of Israel staff and agencies contributed to this report.

Back with eyes open’: Malala visits Pakistan district where she was shot-In first trip back to once militant-infested Pakistani region, Nobel Prize laureate vows to return permanently after she has completed studies at Oxford-By Lehaz Ali-TOI-APR 1,18

MINGORA, Pakistan (AFP) — Malala Yousafzai visited the Swat valley Saturday for her first trip back to the once militant-infested Pakistani region where she was shot in the head by the Taliban more than five years ago.“I left Swat with my eyes closed and now I am back with my eyes open,” she told AFP, referring to how she was airlifted out in a coma after the attack in 2012.“I am extremely delighted. My dream has come true. Peace has returned to Swat because of the invaluable sacrifices rendered by my brothers and sisters,” she said at a school outside Mingora, the district’s main town, where she was escorted by the Pakistani military. The visit — on which she was accompanied by her father, mother, and two brothers — was kept tightly under wraps. She took pictures of the Swat valley from an army helicopter and tweeted that it was “The most beautiful place on earth to me.”After flying from Islamabad, she met with friends and family before visiting the all-boys Swat Cadet College Guli Bagh, a military-run school some 15 kilometers (nine miles) outside Mingora.“So much joy seeing my family home, visiting friends and putting my feet on this soil again,” she tweeted. There she lingered some 45 minutes, taking photographs, before traveling back to Islamabad. The entire visit is believed to have lasted just over two hours.Mingora is where Malala’s family was living and where she was attending school on October 9, 2012, when a gunman boarded her school bus, asked “Who is Malala?” and shot her.She was treated first at an army hospital then airlifted to the British city of Birmingham. Her near-miraculous recovery, and tireless career as an education advocate, have since turned her into a global symbol for human rights, and in 2014 she became the youngest person ever to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize when she was just 17.Her family also told AFP of their joy in coming home.“I am unable to believe I am back in Swat and meeting my own people,” her father Ziauddin Yousafzai said, in comments echoed by her mother Toor Pekai. The trip comes two days after Malala, currently a student at Oxford University in Britain, made her emotional return to Pakistan, where her surprise visit has been met with widespread joy and pride. She broke down in tears as she made a televised speech on Thursday, saying it was her “dream” to be back, and has vowed to Pakistani media that she will return permanently after she has completed her education. However she has also been met with pockets of intense criticism. Malala is widely respected internationally, but opinion is divided in Pakistan, where some conservatives view her as a Western agent on a mission to shame her country. There had been much speculation within the country over whether Malala would go to Swat during her visit. The mountainous region, once a prized tourist destination famed for its pristine scenery, was overrun by the Pakistani Taliban in 2007.The militants imposed a brutal, bloody rule, but the army drove them out in 2009. Recently restrictions on tourists visiting the area were lifted. However security has remained fragile, as the assault on Malala three years after the military operation demonstrated. In February, 11 military personnel were killed in an attack, and analysts have warned the militants still have a presence there.Residents of the area have praised Malala to AFP in recent days, crediting her with helping to generate improvements in education — especially for girls — in the deeply conservative region, part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.Earlier this month, an all-girls school built with money from the Malala Fund opened in Shangla district northeast of Mingora, where her family lived before moving to the city.Malala told AFP in Swat that she could see vast changes in the area since 2012 — but added she has read reports which claim up to 50 percent of children are still out of school.“We will have to work very hard to bring them all to school,” she vowed.Residents of Swat also welcomed her visit and urged fellow Pakistanis to support her efforts to promote girls’ education.“We welcome Malala and the slogan that she has raised — one pen, one teacher. We have pinned our hopes in Malala,” Nazir Khan, a government servant, told AFP.“People have positive as well as negative views about her,” fellow resident Arshad Ali said.“We need to see what she has done until now — she has constructed a model school at Shangla reflecting her sincerity of purpose — to promote education, especially among girls in the country.”
