Erekat: No peace talks until US revokes Jerusalem recognition-Palestinian negotiator says Washington's position is 'unacceptable'; top Abbas aide says US VP Mike Pence is still unwelcome in Ramallah-By Dov Lieber-JAN 9,18

Top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat on Tuesday said the Palestinians would reject all United States-sponsored peace talks until Washington rescinded its December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.“The continued American talk about deals to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or calling for negotiations or talks is unacceptable to the Palestinian leadership, as long as Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is not revoked,” Erekat told the official Voice of Palestine radio station, according to the official PA news site Wafa. When US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, he “removed Jerusalem from any negotiations,” said Erekat.Tensions between the US and Palestinians flared after Trump’s December 6 announcement, with the Palestinian leadership declaring that it would no longer accept Washington as a peace broker.Following the US president’s declaration, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said the US had relinquished its traditional role as the mediator of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. He has also refused to meet with American officials on the peace process. In his December 6 speech, Trump said his decision merely recognized the reality that Jerusalem already serves as Israel’s capital and wasn’t meant to prejudge the final borders of the city. He called for no change in the status quo at the city’s holy sites. The move was hailed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and by leaders across much of the Israeli political spectrum. In a series of tweets published on January 3, however, the US leader said he had taken Jerusalem “off the table.”“They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel,” Trump said of the Palestinians. “We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more,” Trump wrote, without elaborating on the planned Israeli concessions.Washington was paying the Palestinian Authority hundreds of millions of dollars a year “for nothing,” Trump added on Twitter, complaining that the US received “no appreciation or respect” in return.“But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace,” the US president went on, “why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”In his comments on Tuesday, Erekat emphasized the importance of Jerusalem to the Palestinians, saying, “There is no Palestinian state without Jerusalem as its capital.”Erekat also accused the US of imposing “dictates” on the Palestinian leadership by threatening to cut hundreds of millions of dollars in aid.Abbas’s top foreign affairs adviser, Nabil Shaath, said on Tuesday in a press statement that the PA would still refuse to welcome US Vice President Mike Pence, who will visit the region later this month, to Ramallah.“Our position has not changed up to this moment, and it will not change as long as the behavior of the US administration continues to be biased in favor of Israel,” Shaath said, in statements published by the Palestinian news site al-Watan Voice.Pence postponed his visit to Israel and Egypt in mid-December due to a Senate vote on Trump’s tax overhaul. The White House announced Monday that Pence will travel to the region January 19-23, starting with a meeting in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. Pence will also confer with King Abdullah II of Jordan and then hold two days of meetings and events in Israel.Agencies and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Netanyahu hints Israel has stopped hijacked planes crashing into European cities-PM tells NATO ambassadors that Israeli intel has thwarted 'several dozen major terrorist attacks,' some involving civil aviation-By Raphael Ahren-JAN 9,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday indicated that Israel has prevented hijacked airplanes from crashing into European cities.“We have, through our intelligence services, provided information that has stopped several dozen major terrorist attacks, many of them in European countries,” he told foreign diplomats in Jerusalem.“Some of these could have been mass attacks, of the worst kind that you have experienced on the soil of Europe and even worse, because they involve civil aviation. Israel has prevented that, and thereby helped save many European lives,” Netanyahu said, apparently referring to plane hijackings. He did not provide specific details about the attacks Israel helped prevent. The Prime Minister’s Office declined to elaborate. At a meeting of Israel-based ambassadors to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Netanyahu said Jerusalem contributes to the security of every single member of the Western defense alliance, in that it fights both Sunni and Shiite strands of radical Islam.Besides fighting Islamic State terrorism aimed at European cities, Israel is also preventing the group from creating a second stronghold in Egypt, he said.“ISIS is being destroyed in Iraq and Syria, but it is trying to establish an alternative territorial base in the Sinai. Israel is contributing to preventing that in myriad ways,” Netanyahu said. “In general, I would say that Israel is the most powerful indigenous force in the Middle East that fights radical Islam.”Israel further helps NATO by fighting Iran, the dominant Shiite power, the prime minister went on. The Jewish state does not only seek to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring nuclear weapons, it is also “absolutely committed to preventing Iran from establishing a military base in Syria. And we back our words with action,” he added, likely hinting at various airstrikes on weapon convoys and factories allegedly carried out by Israel.Furthermore, Iran plans to import 100,000 Shiite fighters to Syria as part of its quest to dominate and eventually “conquer” the Middle East, he charged. If Tehran were successful in its efforts, radical Sunni and Shiite forces would clash in Syria, sending millions of refugees to European shores, the prime minister warned.“Where will the spillover [of a Sunni-Shiite clash in Syria] happen? In Europe. Where will the human flow go? To Europe. Who’s preventing that right now? Israel? Right now, Israel alone. But I maintain that it’s a common interest that we have,” he told the NATO ambassadors during the public part of the event.Israel and NATO have cooperated on security matters for decades but recently upgraded their ties significantly. Last year, Israel opened its first office at NATO headquarters in Brussels.Israeli officials have repeatedly said that the Jewish state opposes the presence of Iran and its proxies, notably Hezbollah, in southern Syria and Lebanon.Israel has been negotiating with the United States and Russia, the main brokers in Syria, to keep Iran-backed Shiite militias and the Hezbollah terrorist group away from the border.Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and others have all said that Israel’s policy is to target shipments of advanced weaponry, including accurate long-range missiles, that are heading to or in the possession of Hezbollah. In late December, Assad’s troops, accompanied by Iranian-backed fighters, recaptured the Syrian Golan from rebels, allowing President Bashar Assad to reassert control over a small portion of the area adjacent to the Israeli border. Still, much of the area along the border, around the city of Quneitra, remains under rebel control.Last week, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said the most serious immediate threat to Israel was posed by Hezbollah, followed by other jihadist groups supported by Tehran positioned on the Syrian border.Describing Iran as a “multidimensional threat,” the army chief said the most worrying aspect is the Islamic Republic’s desire to obtain nuclear capabilities, followed by its efforts to achieve hegemony in the region.

Iran’s supreme leader: Anti-regime rallies a US, Zionist ‘plot’-Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says mass protests held across country funded by Gulf states, carried out by outlawed opposition group-By AFP-JAN 9,18

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday praised a “massive movement of the people against the plots of the enemies,” accusing the United States and Israel of inciting anti-government demonstrations.Pro-government rallies have been held across the country since late December, according to Iranian state media, following several days of opposition protests which sparked violence that left 21 dead.Such a “popular mobilization against the enemy’s plots targeting the regime… doesn’t exist anywhere (else) in the world,” Khamenei said in a speech broadcast by Iranian media. He accused the United States and “the Zionists” of spending months preparing demonstrations in small towns in the hope that they would spread to the capital.“This will not go unanswered,” he said.“The money came from the rich governments of the Persian Gulf and the perpetrators were the criminal Monafeghin group,” he added.Monafeghin (“hypocrites” in Persian) is a label Iranian authorities use for the People’s Mujahedeen of Iran, an outlawed opposition group. The anti-government protests had used the slogan “no to high living costs,” which “pleases everyone,” he said.“But the people, who were not very many, quickly dissociated themselves (from the movement) when they realized the real objectives” of the instigators, he said.Khamenei said there was a distinction between “the just demands of the people and the wild and destructive actions of this group.”He said protests for rights had nothing to do with “burning the Koran, insulting Islam, insulting the flag and burning mosques.”The anti-government demonstrations were the biggest such movement in the tightly controlled country since protests over a disputed election in 2009.

Mossad chief: Protests unlikely to topple Iran regime-Yossi Cohen says Islamic Republic pouring more cash into security, intelligence and 'galloping into the Middle East without hindrance'-By TOI staff and Agencies-JAN 9,18

The head of Israel’s spy agency said Tuesday that the current protests in Iran were unlikely to topple the regime and warned that massive Iranian-backed forces were “galloping into the Middle East without hindrance” to spread the Islamic Republic’s vision of Islam.“We have eyes and ears and more, even in Iran,” Mossad chief Yossi Cohen told a Finance Ministry convention in Jerusalem.“Iranian citizens went out to demonstrate because of the economic situation and the expectation that President Hassan Rouhani would improve the economy,” he said. “That’s what brought them out on the streets. There’s no need for great expectations, even though I would be very happy to see a social revolution in Iran. Maybe it will happen in the future.”Cohen went on to say that Iran’s arming of Shiite organizations, both inside and outside of the republic, with precision weapons was “a growing concern for the well-being of the entire Middle East,” and that worry was mounting among Sunni leaders, as it was in Israel.Iran’s economy was growing, he said, and internal financial figures showed that more cash was being spent on security, intelligence and Iranian expansion “into the Middle East and beyond.”Iran’s penetration into the region was creating a virtual “air and land corridor, which is pouring fighters into the area to put into practice [the Iranian regime’s] vision.”Cohen added that huge forces stood in the way of any who tried to defy the Iranian regime.“We experienced it in the Green Revolution, which died out in 2009, and we’re seeing it now,” he said.On Tuesday, Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, tweeted that “those who seek to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran from abroad” had “failed, and you will fail in the future, too.”His comments followed an announcement Sunday by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard that the nation and its security forces had ended the wave of unrest linked to anti-government protests that erupted last month. In a statement on its website, the Guard blamed the unrest on the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia, as well as on an exiled opposition group known as the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, and supporters of the monarchy that was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. An Iranian reformist lawmaker said Tuesday that some 3,700 people had been arrested in the days of protests and unrest — a far higher number than authorities previously released. At least 21 people were killed in the unrest surrounding the protests. The official news website of the Iranian parliament, icana.ir, quoted Mahmoud Sadeghi of Tehran as saying that various security and intelligence forces detained the protesters, making it difficult to know the exact number of detainees. He did not elaborate, nor did he say where he got the figure.Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli has said about 42,000 people at most took part in the week of protests.Sadeghi’s figure for those arrested would mean more than ten percent of those who demonstrated were arrested.Iranian authorities have said that the protests are waning. In recent days, government supporters have held several mass rallies across the country to protest the unrest. The United States and Israel have expressed support for the protests, which began on December 28 in Iran’s second largest city, Mashhad, but deny Iranian government allegations that they fomented them. The protests were the largest seen in Iran since the disputed 2009 presidential election, and some demonstrators called for the overthrow of the government.

Soldiers arrest Palestinian girl with a knife, bottle of gasoline-Suspect first spotted by Israeli civilian in West Bank who drew his pistol and subdued her until security forces arrived-By Judah Ari Gross-JAN 9,18
Israeli security forces arrested on Tuesday a Palestinian teenage girl who was found in possession of a utility knife and a bottle of gasoline at a bus stop in the central West Bank, the army said.An Israeli civilian spotted the teenager behaving suspiciously at the Shiloh Junction, north of Ramallah. He drew his pistol and called on her to halt. The girl then took out and threw away the knife that she had in her possession, an army spokesperson said.A short while later, Israel Defense Forces soldiers arrived on the scene and placed her under arrest. During a search of her bag, they found the plastic bottle full of gasoline, the IDF said.“She is now being questioned,” the spokesperson said. There were no injuries reported.Last week, soldiers also arrested a Palestinian teenager who was holding a knife and walking toward their jeep in the central West Bank.Officials who were at the scene last Monday said the 19-year-old man approached the vehicle at the Beit Anun Junction, near Hebron, and dropped a knife on the ground. The soldiers in the jeep then subdued him without firing their weapons, the army said. Searching him, the soldiers found a second knife in his possession. The man was placed under arrest and interrogated briefly at the scene, before being handed over to law enforcement for further questioning, the army said. No soldiers were injured in the incident.

Egypt says its forces killed 8 suspected jihadists in Sinai-Firefight breaks out during raid on suspected hideout in el-Arish city; weapons seized from group planning attack on security forces, according to Interior Ministry-By Agencies-JAN 9,18

CAIRO — Egypt says security forces have killed eight suspected jihadists in a shootout in the northern Sinai Peninsula. The Interior Ministry said Tuesday the firefight broke out when the forces raided a suspected hideout in el-Arish city. It said the militants were planning attacks targeting security forces, and were in possession of explosives, rifles and ammunition.Egypt has been battling militants in the northern part of Sinai Peninsula for years, but the insurgency became far more deadly after the 2013 military ouster of Mohammed Morsi, an elected but divisive Islamist president. An Islamic State affiliate based in the Sinai has carried out a number of high-profile attacks in recent years, mainly targeting security forces and Egypt’s Christian minority. On December 28 a roadside bomb planted by Islamic militants in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula hit a military vehicle on Thursday, killing six people, including a senior army officer. The bomb struck a military convoy that was patrolling an area just outside the town of Bir al-Abd in northern Sinai.Bir al-Abd, near el-Arish, was the scene of the deadliest terrorist attack against civilians in Egypt’s modern history, when militants killed 311 worshipers in a mosque on November 24.

Defense Ministry drafts bill to cut PA funds over terrorist stipends-Proposal would deduct cash payouts to relatives of Palestinian prisoners and their families from Israeli tax revenues heading to Ramallah-By Marissa Newman-JAN 9,18

The Defense Ministry on Tuesday publicized a draft bill that would deduct welfare payments paid out by the Palestinian Authority to Palestinian prisoners and their families from the tax revenues Israel transfers annually to the PA.“The Palestinian Authority pays over a billion shekels a year to terrorists and their relatives, thereby encouraging and perpetuating terrorism,” Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said in a statement. “The moment the payments are set based on the severity of the crime and the prison sentence, namely that those who murder and are sentenced to life receive a lot more, this is [tantamount to] funding terror attacks against Israelis.”The bill, which targets cash payments by the PA to jailed or injured terrorists and their relatives, will also apply to Palestinians who committed other crimes for which they are being compensated by the PA, the ministry said in a statement. The Palestine Liberation Organization gives monthly payments to all Palestinian prisoners jailed in Israel, no matter the reason for their incarceration, and also to families of so-called “martyrs” — a term used by the PLO to refer to anyone killed by an Israeli, whether the person was killed attacking Israelis or an innocent bystander.A recent report published by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli Defense Ministry agency responsible for administering civilian affairs in the West Bank and the crossings with Gaza, said that around one-third of the Palestinian prisoners are “directly responsible for the murder of Israelis.”According to the Defense Ministry, the Palestinian Authority in 2017 paid NIS 687 million ($198 million) to the so-called “martyrs’ families fund” and NIS 550 million ($160 million) to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club — some 7 percent of its overall budget.Palestinian security prisoners serving 20-30 year sentences for carrying out terror attacks are eligible for a lifetime NIS 10,000 ($1,900) monthly stipend, the Defense Ministry said, citing PA figures. Those prisoners who receive a 3-5 year sentence get a monthly wage of NIS 2,000 ($580). Palestinian prisoners who are married, have children, live in Jerusalem, or hold Israeli citizenship receive additional payments.“For illustrative purposes, the average salary in the West Bank stands at just over NIS 2,000 ($580) a month,” the Defense Ministry said.According to the proposed legislation, each year the defense minister will convene a ministerial panel to tally the deductions from the tax funds gathered for the PA. Under an economic agreement signed in 1994, Israel transfers to the PA tens of millions of dollars each year in customs duties levied on goods destined for Palestinian markets that transit through Israeli ports. The Defense Ministry announcement came a week after US President Donald Trump threatened aid cuts to the PA, asking why Washington should make “any of these massive future payments” when the Palestinians were “no longer willing to talk peace.” The US envoy to the United Nations had earlier floated the option of reducing funding to UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.US lawmakers have also been advancing the Taylor Force Act — named for a US national killed in a Tel Aviv stabbing terror attack — which would cut US funding to the PA unless it discontinued its practice of paying monthly stipends to the families of terrorists who kill Israelis.Monday’s bill, the Israeli equivalent of the US Taylor Force Act, was drafted after months of deliberations by a special task force from the Defense Ministry, Justice Ministry, and security agencies. It will be brought to the Knesset’s Ministerial Committee for Legislation in the coming months, the ministry said.A similar proposal by Yesh Atid MK Elazar Stern passed its preliminary reading last year and has since been under review by the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. The PA has refused to cease the payments to Palestinian prisoners. In June, Abbas, in a speech read by his foreign affairs adviser Nabil Shaath, argued that “payments to support the families are a social responsibility to look after innocent people affected by the incarceration or killing of their loved ones.“It’s quite frankly racist rhetoric to call all our political prisoners terrorists. They are, in effect, the victims of the occupation, not the creators of the occupation,” Abbas said.Dov Lieber contributed to this report.

Sweden warns against cutting US aid to Palestinian refugee agency-Stockholm says reducing support for UNRWA over Palestinian rejection of peace talks 'would be destabilizing for the region'-By AFP-JAN 9,18

UNITED NATIONS — Sweden, a big donor country that has recognized a Palestinian state, warned Tuesday that any US decision to withdraw funds to the UN agency for Palestinians would be destabilizing for the Middle East.Sweden’s UN Ambassador Olof Skoog said he had raised his concerns with US Ambassador Nikki Haley following reports that the US administration had withheld $125 million in funds due on January 1 for the United Nations’ refugee agency for Palestinians, known as UNRWA.“My concern is that as we talk about regional stability, withdrawing funding for UNRWA would be very negative, both in terms of humanitarian needs of over five million people but also of course it would be destabilizing for the region,” Skoog told reporters at UN headquarters. The Swedish ambassador said he did not rule out raising the issue at the Security Council, which is scheduled to hold its regular meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on January 25.US President Donald Trump earlier this month threatened to cut US aid to the Palestinians, saying on Twitter that Washington gets “no appreciation or respect” from the Palestinians.“We pay the Palestinians HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect,” Trump tweeted on January 2.“With the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”In Washington, a senior State Department official said Monday that “contrary to reports that we have halted funding to UNRWA, the decision is under review.”“There are still deliberations taking place, and we have missed no deadline,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.Sweden was the first EU country to recognize a Palestinian state in 2014 and is among the top 10 donors to UNRWA along with the United States, the European Union, Saudi Arabia, Germany and Britain.US Vice President Mike Pence will travel to the Middle East next week, with stops scheduled in Egypt, Jordan and Israel.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that he would like to see UNRWA shut down but called for the US to withdraw its support for the agency gradually.Netanyahu’s comments at the weekly cabinet meeting confirmed earlier reports that Israel was cautiously supporting the anticipated US funding cut, but is aiming to minimize possible harm to the Palestinians and prevent a serious humanitarian crisis from developing as a result, especially in the Gaza Strip.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Netanyahu: Israel acts to keep game-changing arms away from Hezbollah-After reported airstrikes on targets in Syria, PM and Mossad chief warn against advanced Iranian munitions reaching terror groups-By Judah Ari Gross-JAN 9,18

Following reports of an Israeli airstrike on a weapons depot in Syria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that Israel is prepared to take action to prevent advanced munitions from reaching the Hezbollah terrorist group.“We have a longstanding policy to prevent the transfer of game-changing weapons to Hezbollah in Syrian territory. This policy has not changed. We back it up, if necessary, with action,” he said at an event with NATO officials in Jerusalem. However, the prime minister did not confirm that the Israel Defense Forces conducted the predawn strike, which the Syrian military claimed hit the military base of al-Qutayfah, outside Damascus. The Israeli military would not comment on the alleged strike.Separately, Yossi Cohen, the head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency, said the proliferation of accurate Iranian missiles is a “growing concern to the peace of the entire Middle East.”Speaking at a Finance Ministry event in Jerusalem, Cohen said, “We hear the concerns from Sunni leaders about Iran are growing, just as they are in Israel. We are hearing it from everywhere.”On Tuesday morning, the Syrian military said that Israel conducted a series of three airstrikes on a base in al-Qutayfah, northeast of Damascus, which is home to its 155th Artillery Regiment. Syrian opposition media reported that the base was used to store weapons, specifically long-range missiles. In a statement, the Syrian military reported that the strikes occurred over the course of several hours — at 2:40 a.m., 3:04 a.m. and 4:15 a.m. — and were carried out by both aircraft and surface-to-surface missiles.“Our air defenses responded to three Israeli missile attacks on military positions in the al-Qutayfah countryside,” official Syrian state media quoted military officials as saying.Syrian military officials said the country’s air defenses intercepted three of the missiles fired and hit one of the Israeli aircraft. The claim could not be immediately confirmed.According to Ronen Solomon, an Israeli freelance intelligence analyst who tracks Syria’s weapons development programs for his blog Intelli Times, the 155th Artillery Regiment operates Scud missile launchers and “has been known since 2010 as the regiment that hosts Hezbollah’s advanced Scud missile base.”Loud explosions could be heard throughout the area following the alleged strike, according to local media. Ahead of the strike, Lebanese media reported that Israeli jets were seen flying over the country. The alleged airstrike came as senior Israeli ministers and defense officials have reportedly been holding high-level talks about the situation in Syria and Lebanon, specifically regarding Iranian entrenchment in the region.“The Middle East is raging around us, and what concerns us the most are Iranian efforts to establish military bases in Syria,” Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz told Army Radio Monday after being asked about reports that the high-level security cabinet has been holding a series of “extremely significant” meetings on the threats from the northern border.“The prime minister is leading a multifaceted campaign to stop this entrenchment,” Steinitz said, declining to comment specifically on the content of the meetings.Last month, Israel allegedly fired missiles at a suspected Iranian base in Syria, reportedly killing 12 Iranian military personnel and destroying several buildings.Israeli officials have repeatedly said that the Jewish state opposes the presence of Iran and its proxies, notably Hezbollah, in southern Syria and Lebanon.Israel has been negotiating with the United States and Russia, the main brokers in Syria, to keep Iran-backed Shiite militias and the Hezbollah terrorist group away from the border.Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and others have all said that Israel’s policy is to target shipments of advanced weaponry, including accurate long-range missiles, that are heading to or in the possession of Hezbollah. He noted the over $1 billion that the country invests in its proxies in Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, Iraq and — increasingly — Palestinian terrorist groups in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.According to Eisenkot, each year Iran sends between $700 million and $1 billion to Hezbollah each year, $100 million each to Shiite militias in Syria, Shiite militias in Iraq, rebels in Yemen and to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas terrorist groups. The army chief did not provide the source for those figures.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Minister mulls renaming city in tribute to Rabbi Steinman-Rabbis ask Aryeh Deri to name ultra-Orthodox city of Elad 'Ayelet Hashahar' after top spiritual leader's pen name-By Michael Bachner-JAN 9,18

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri is considering renaming a central Israeli city after Rabbi Aharon Yehudah Leib Steinman, the 104-year-old leader of the Lithuanian ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, who died last month.Senior rabbis in the Degel Hatorah faction of the United Torah Judaism party asked Deri, leader of the Sephardic ultra-Orthodox party Shas, to rename the Haredi city of Elad “Ayelet Hashahar,” according to the ultra-Orthodox news website Kikar Hashabbat.“The request has been received and it will be checked with the professional authorities,” said Deri on Tuesday, confirming the report.“Ayelet Hashahar” is the title of a series of twelve books penned by Rabbi Shteinman on the Talmud. He published the work anonymously under the pseudonym “Ayelet Hashahar” which alludes to his initials and those of his wife, Tamar [AYeLeT = Aharon Yehuda Leib Tamar] in Hebrew, as well as Hebrew for the “morning star” mentioned in Psalms 22.“It is only appropriate that a religious city like Elad proudly bear the name of the yeshiva leader, who always saw improving the prestige of the Torah and yeshiva world as his top priority,” the rabbis wrote to Deri, according to the report. However, the move could be delayed until after municipal elections in October, the report added, due to the Interior Ministry’s policy of refraining from implementing major changes in local councils before elections. It is not clear if the name change will be possible, given that Ayelet Hashahar is already the name of a kibbutz in the Upper Galilee.During the month since his death and mass funeral, several buildings and neighborhoods have been named after Shteinman. These include a yeshiva complex in Bnei Brak, an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Nazareth Illit, and a yeshiva in the neighborhood of Har Nof in Jerusalem.Hundreds of thousands of people attended the funeral for Steinman. In his will, which was read at the ceremony, the rabbi instructed his followers not to give eulogies at the burial and that his grave be simply marked. He also said no praise should be publicized about him in the press and said children should not be named in his honor.

Schaefer is known for posting a YouTube video in 2016 in which she called the Holocaust the most “persistent lie in all of history.”Though prohibited by German law from revealing the name of a suspect under investigation, spokesperson Andrea Mayer confirms that a woman fitting her description had been recognized in the public audience at a trial in Munich of another person charged with incitement to hate, Sylvia Stolz, a former lawyer in Germany who already has been convicted of Holocaust denial. Stolz represented Holocaust-denier Ernst Zundel, who died in 2017.— JTA-4:33 pm-Palestinian teen said caught carrying knife, firebomb in West Bank-Israeli security forces arrest a Palestinian teenage girl who is found in possession of a utility knife and a bottle of gasoline at a bus stop at the Shilo Junction in the central West Bank, the army says.An Israeli civilian spotted the teenager behaving strangely, drew his pistol and called for her to halt. The girl then took out and threw away the knife that she had in her possession, an army spokesperson says.Soldiers arrived on the scene a short while later and placed her under arrest. During a search of her bag, they found the gasoline, the army says.“She is now being questioned,” the spokesperson says. There are no injuries reported.— Judah Ari Gross-3:59 pm--Greece to limit sharia law after European Court challenge-ATHENS, Greece — Lawmakers in Greece are set to limit the powers of Islamic courts operating in a border region that is home to a 100,000-strong Muslim minority.Backed by parliament’s largest political parties, the draft law is set to be voted on later Tuesday. The proposal aims to scrap rules dating back more than 90 years ago and which refer many civil cases involving members of the Muslim community to Sharia law courts. The new legislation will give Greek courts priority in all cases. The changes — considered long overdue by many Greek legal experts — follow a complaint to the Council of Europe’s Court of Human Rights over an inheritance dispute by a Muslim woman who lives in the northeastern Greek city of Komotini.— AP-3:34 pm-Kurdish soccer player in ‘safe place’ after Germany attackA German-Turkish soccer player whose car was shot at on a German highway is in a “safe place” and receiving police protection after the apparent assassination attempt, his lawyer says.Deniz Naki, who plays in Turkey and is known for his pro-Kurdish views, was unharmed in the shooting late Sunday which he believes was linked to his criticism of the Turkish government. The 28-year-old tells German media his SUV came under fire from a black van on the A4 motorway near the western town of Dueren, leaving two bullets lodged in his car.“I was afraid for my life,” says German-born Naki, who plays for the third-tier club Amedspor in the majority-Kurdish city of Diyarbakir. “I am a walking target in Turkey because of my pro-Kurdish stance,” he is quoted as saying.German prosecutors have opened an investigation into attempted murder, and police officers have since taken Naki to “a hidden location” as a precaution, his lawyer Soran Haldi Mizrak tells the DPA news agency.— AFP-3:07 pm-Iran’s Khamenei hails rallies against US, Zionist ‘plot’TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei praises a “massive movement of the people against the plots of the enemies,” accusing the United States and Israel of inciting anti-government demonstrations.Pro-government rallies have been held across the country since late December, according to Iranian state media, following several days of opposition protests which sparked violence that left 21 dead.Such a “popular mobilization against the enemy’s plots targeting the regime… doesn’t exist anywhere (else) in the world,” Khamenei says in a speech broadcast by Iranian media. He accuses the United States and “the Zionists” of spending months preparing demonstrations in small towns in the hope that they would spread to the capital.“This will not go unanswered,” he says. The anti-government demonstrations were the biggest such movement in the tightly controlled country since protests over a disputed election in 2009.— AFP-2:52 pm-Egypt says its forces kill 8 suspected jihadists in Sinai-CAIRO — Egypt says its security forces have killed eight suspected jihadists in a shootout in the northern Sinai Peninsula. The Interior Ministry says the firefight broke out when the forces raided a suspected hideout in el-Arish city. It says the jihadists were planning attacks targeting security forces, and were in possession of explosives, rifles and ammunition.Egypt has been battling Islamist insurgents in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula for years, but the insurgency became far more deadly after the 2013 military ouster of Mohammed Morsi. An Islamic State affiliate based in the Sinai has carried out a number of high-profile attacks in recent years, mainly targeting security forces and Egypt’s Christian minority.— Agencies-2:48 pm--Deri considers renaming ultra-Orthodox city in honor of late Rabbi Shteinman-Interior Minister Aryeh Deri is said to be considering changing the name of the ultra-Orthodox city of Elad to Ayelet Hashahar in honor of the late Rabbi Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman, a top Haredi rabbi in Israel until his death last month at the age of 104.Rabbis affiliated with the Degel Hatorah political party, part of the United Torah Judaism faction in the Knesset, spoke with Deri about the possibility in recent days, according the ultra-Orthodox news website Kikar Hashabbat.Ayelet Hashahar is Shteinman’s pen name in his extensive published commentaries on the Bible and Talmud. It is not clear if the name change will be possible given that Ayelet Hashahar is already the name of a kibbutz in the Upper Galilee.2:35 pm-Israel has stopped terrorists from crashing planes into Europe’s cities — PM-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday suggests that Israel has prevented terrorists from hijacking airplanes and crashing them into European cities.“We have, through our intelligence services, provided information that has stopped several dozen major terrorist attacks, many of them in European countries,” he tells foreign diplomats at a NATO gathering in Jerusalem.“Some of these could have been massive attacks, of the worst kind that have ever been experienced on the soil of Europe — and even worse, because they involved civil aviation. Israel has prevented that, and thereby helped save many European lives.”He does not provide more details about the nature of the attacks.— Raphael Ahren-1:56 pm-Jerusalem police prevent gathering of Palestinian terror group-Jerusalem Police chief Yoram Halevy issues an order preventing a planned gathering in East Jerusalem of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a Palestinian terror group. The event was slated to take place Tuesday, but officers arrive at the scene and prevent it from taking place, according to Hebrew media reports.Three organizers are taken for questioning. The DFLP has been relatively inactive in recent years, but was once a prominent terror group. It carried out the infamous Ma’alot massacre in 1974 in which 25 people, most of them Israeli schoolchildren, were murdered.1:55 pm-Some 3,700 Iranians arrested during protests, unrest, lawmaker says-TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian reformist lawmaker says some 3,700 people were arrested in the days of protests and unrest that roiled Iran over the past two weeks, offering a far higher number than authorities previously released. The protests, which vented anger at high unemployment and official corruption, were the largest seen in Iran since the disputed 2009 presidential election, and some demonstrators called for the overthrow of the government. At least 21 people have been killed in the unrest surrounding the protests. The official news website of the Iranian parliament, icana.ir, quotes Mahmoud Sadeghi of Tehran as saying that different security and intelligence forces detained the protesters, making it difficult to know the exact number of detainees. He did not elaborate, nor did he say where he got the figure.Previously, authorities have said “hundreds” were arrested in Tehran alone, not offering a total figure for arrests as the demonstrations spread into the Iranian countryside, including small towns.Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli has said about 42,000 people at most took part in the anti-government protests. Sadeghi’s figure of arrested offered Tuesday would mean nearly nine percent of those who demonstrated were arrested.— AP.

Worldwide suicide attacks on the wane, but more bombers than ever female-Tel Aviv study says global decrease in 2017 likely due to setbacks suffered by Islamic State; no bombings in Israel and West Bank, but 13 foiled;-By Judah Ari Gross-JAN 8,18-TOI

The year 2017 holds a dubious record: the largest number of suicide bombings worldwide carried out by women and girls.According to a new study by Tel Aviv’s Institute for National Security Studies, released on Sunday, nearly a fifth of the 348 documented suicide attacks perpetrated in 2017 were performed by females, the vast majority of them in Africa, by the jihadist group Boko Haram. Not noted in the INSS report is that many, if not most, of the 126 women and girls who carried out suicide bombings for the Islamic State affiliated group appeared to have been brainwashed, forced or tricked into doing so.The study was written by Aviad Mendelboim and Yoram Schweitzer, of INSS’s Terrorism and Low-Intensity Conflict Research Program, using data from at least two different, independent sources. The past year saw a drop in the total number of suicide attacks worldwide, to from 469 in 2016 and 452 in 2015.“This is the lowest number of suicide attacks since 2013. Approximately 4,310 people were killed and 6,700 people wounded in suicide attacks this past year,” according to the report.“Despite the decline in the extent of the phenomenon relative to the previous year, suicide terrorism served as a weapon employed by paramilitary forces in their operations against state militaries, mainly but not only by Islamic State combatants,” the researchers wrote. The study credited the decrease, in part, to the battlefield losses of the Islamic State terrorist group.“With the military defeats suffered by the Islamic State in Iraq and in Syria and the loss of the caliphate’s territorial base, it appears that a further decline can be expected in the coming year in the number of suicide bombers who can be directly deployed,” according to the report.Mendelboim and Schweitzer acknowledged that the figure of 348 suicide bombings is likely low, as it was difficult to verify some of the data coming from Iraq and Syria, two areas that are frequent sites of suicide bombings by the Islamic State terrorist group. From the figures they collected, the researchers found that approximately two-thirds of the attacks were carried out by the Islamic State and organizations who have pledged allegiance to it, like Boko Haram, and a quarter of the suicide bombings were perpetrated by Al-Qaeda and its affiliates — amounting to some 90 percent of the attacks.“No responsibility was claimed for the rest of the suicide attacks that were carried out this year, and it is possible that some of them also relate to this ideological current, apart from two suicide attacks that were perpetrated by Houthi rebels in Yemen and the Kurdish underground (PKK) in Turkey,” according to the INSS study.Approximately two-thirds of the world’s suicide bombings occurred in four countries: Afghanistan (67), Iraq (64), Nigeria (57) and Syria (40).In 2017, there were no suicide bombings in Israel or the West Bank, though the head of the Shin Bet last month told the Knesset that 13 such attacks were foiled over the past year.December also saw a stabbing attack on a Border Police officer committed by a Palestinian man in Ramallah wearing what appeared to be a suicide bomb belt, but was later found to have been a dud. While there were no suicide bombings in Israel and the West Bank, a so-far unique one took place in the Gaza Strip in 2017.“For the first time, the Gaza Strip was the site of a suicide attack against non-Israelis, when an activist from the Salafi jihadist movement activated an explosive belt against Hamas forces who tried to arrest him at the Rafah border crossing,” according to the report, referring to a bombing in August. The 348 suicide bombings of 2017 were carried out by approximately 623 terrorists. Of them, just over a fifth — 137 — were women, who perpetrated 61 suicide attacks in 6 countries, as compared to 77 women the previous year and 118 women the year before. The vast majority — 92 percent — were carried out by the Boko Haram terrorist group in West Africa, mostly Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger.According to UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the Nigerian-based terrorist group recognized that women and children, especially girls, were less likely to arouse the suspicion of security forces and alert citizens, enabling them to enter crowded public spaces before detonating a bomb.“It is unclear whether some of these children are even aware of what they are being asked to do,” the UN agency wrote in April 2017.“That they are carrying explosives in a belt on their chests is incontrovertible, but it has been difficult to ascertain if some of these children are being used to transport the devices to other locations and other active combatants or if they are being forced into a perverse death mission in exchange for promised redemption and martyrdom.”UNICEF documented one case of a teenage girl from Chad named Amina who was “manipulated and drugged” and forced into carrying out a suicide bombing with three other girls. For years, Boko Haram has been kidnapping children in Nigeria, the most famous case being the 276 girls who were taken from the Chibok school, prompting the creation of the “Bring Back Our Girls” movement.Kidnapped boys are used as child-soldiers, while girls, some as young as 12 and 13, are declared wives and repeatedly raped, often becoming pregnant by their rapist, according to the UN.

Massive explosion at Syria jihadist base kills 23 – monitor-Civilians among the dead in northwestern city of Idlib as blast, reportedly caused by car bomb, destroys building-By AFP-TOI-8 January 2018

BEIRUT, Lebanon — An explosion at a base for Asian jihadists in northwestern Syria’s Idlib city on Sunday killed 23 people, including seven civilians, a monitor said.Extremist groups fighting in Syria count thousands of Asians among their ranks, including many from central Asian states and members of the Muslim Uighur ethnic minority of China’s Xinjiang province.“A large explosion on Sunday evening hit the base of the Ajnad al-Qawqaz faction in Idlib,” said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights head Rami Abdel Rahman, adding that most of the non-civilian casualties were fighters from the group. He did not specify the cause of the blast, but activists on social media said a car bomb was responsible. The huge explosion in #Idlib city was recorded by a surveillance camera. #Outrage4Idlib#Syria pic.twitter.com/4BEfbRnrBL— Tania Chávez (@Tania_Tania_C) January 7, 2018-Dozens of people were wounded, particularly fighters, according to Abdel Rahman, who said the base was “almost completely destroyed” and that nearby buildings were damaged. The Ajnad al-Qawqaz group includes hundreds of Caucasian fighters and is battling alongside the Fateh al-Sham Front, a former Al-Qaeda affiliate, to repel a Syrian regime advance in the southeast of Idlib province. The area has seen intense clashes following a regime offensive aimed at seizing a strategically vital highway between Damascus and second city Aleppo. The Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of activists across Syria, said regime forces had seized more than 60 villages in the area since December 25.An alliance dominated by Fateh al-Sham controls much of Idlib province, where there are regular car bombings, often blamed on disputes between armed factions. Some residents blame the Islamic State group for such attacks, although the group has no open presence in the province.

The security cabinet has convened several times in recent days to discuss the situation and threats along Israel’s northern borders, according to a report on Sunday that described the meetings “extremely significant.”“Due to limitations imposed by the military censor, I can’t give the full information,” said Channel 10 diplomatic correspondent Barak Ravid, “but after more than a decade of covering the security cabinet, I can judge that the discussions over the last few days about the northern front were extremely significant.”He added that the discussions were focused on the northern front, and among other issues dealt with the activities of Iran and the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist group in Syria and Lebanon, as well as preparing for the day after the Syrian civil war ends, and the renewed control of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s military over most of the country.Although he was unable to give more details of the meetings, Ravid referred to remarks made by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman in October.“Syria and Lebanon have become one military entity. Israel must prepare for a new challenge… on the northern front,” Liberman said at that time. “Any developments will be due to Hezbollah, Assad’s regime and all those collaborating with Assad’s regime, along with the Lebanese army. Unfortunately, this is the reality,” Ravid quoted the minister as saying.Channel 10 reported that the situation on the northern front, and the Iranian presence in Syria and Lebanon, was also of great concern to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He has held telephone conversations recently with many world leaders, warning them of the volatile situation created by Iran setting up bases in these two countries, through Hezbollah and Shiite militias. At the end of December, Assad’s troops, accompanied by Iranian-backed militias and the Hezbollah, took over the Syrian Golan from the rebels, giving the government control over the Golan Heights, captured by Israel from Syria during the 1967 Six Day War.Last week, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said the most serious threat to Israel was posed by the Hezbollah terrorist group in Lebanon, followed by other jihadist groups supported by Tehran positioned on Israel’s border with Syria.Describing Iran as a “multidimensional threat,” the army chief said the most worrying aspect is the Islamic Republic’s desire to obtain nuclear capabilities, followed by its efforts to achieve hegemony in the region. He noted the nearly $1.5 billion that the country invests in its proxies in Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, Iraq and — increasingly — Palestinian terrorist groups in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.According to Eisenkot, each year Iran sends between $700 million to $1 billion to Hezbollah each year, $100 million each to Shiite militias in Syria, Shiite militias in Iraq, rebels in Yemen and to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas terrorist groups. The army chief did not provide the source for these figures. In recent years, Eisenkot said, the Hezbollah terrorist group has transformed from a “so-called defender of Lebanon to an Iranian proxy in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.”He said the group has significant defense capabilities and can also attack the Israeli homefront, making it a formidable foe. The group is generally seen by the army as the benchmark by which it measures its preparedness for war.Eisenkot noted the group has suffered some setbacks while fighting in Syria in support of the regime, with some 2,000 fighters killed and 10,000 injured, but said that it has also earned “no small amount of experience, which worries us.”Regarding Syria, the army chief continued, the IDF has taken, and will continue to take, military action in order to prevent the entrenchment of Iran-backed Shiite militias on the border.Israel has publicly warned against the accumulation of Iranian and Iranian-backed forces at its border. Iran has arranged for thousands of militiamen from across the region to fight on behalf of Assad’s government and has sent top commanders to direct its own Revolutionary Guards in the country as well.

Turkey seeking better EU ties as journalists await prison-By Nikolaj Nielsen-EUOBSERVER

BRUSSELS, 5. Jan, 09:15-Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in Paris on Friday (5 January) as part of a broader charm offensive to mend ties with the European Union.Erdogan is set to meet French president Emmanuel Macron where the two plan to discuss security and defence among other issues."I will make my first visit to Europe [since the beginning of the year 2018] to [meet] my friend Emmanuel Macron," Erdogan was cited as saying in the Daily Sabah, a pro-government daily.Erdogan's move follows a continued government led-purge of the country, as some 17 journalists were put on trial over Christmas for their alleged role in a terrorist organisation. Around 150 journalists are now imprisoned in Turkey, more than any other country. The European Commission on Thursday said it too seeks better ties with Ankara, given in part the EU's reliance on Turkey to keep migrants from disembarking towards Greece. The two sides had in 2015 agreed to a EU-Turkey statement to stem migrant flows in exchange for billions in refugee aid and other political concessions, some of which, like a visa-waiver regime for Turkish nationals that has yet to materialise.Mina Andreeva, a chief EU commission spokeswoman, told reporters in Brussels that Turkey remains a strategic partner on many fronts from security to migration."We continue to deliver on our part of the EU-Turkey agreement," she said, noting that relations are close."Of course, whenever there is a need for us to remind about European principles that need to be respected, we do so," she said.Erdogan, in the wake of the failed July 2016 military coup, made repeated calls to reintroduce the death penalty. He has also tightened his presidential grip on power following a constitutional referendum last year.Such moves have put the country at odds on its path towards European Union membership, which has since been put on pause. Calls by the European Parliament to put a formal end to the talks have largely been ignored by member states. The European Council in late 2017 had instead decided to reorient pre-accession aid to Turkey with money being channeled into fields of the judiciary and civil society."Turkey for the time being is stepping away from the European Union," said EU commission president Jean-Claude Juncker in November.Meanwhile, Turkey's foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu is also demanding a fresh start to German relations - despite Ankara threatening to send a German journalist, Deniz Yucel, to jail."From our side, we don't see any crisis. Turkey has no problem with Germany. But Germany has a problem with Turkey, and Germany does not miss an opportunity to attack Turkey," Cavusoglu said earlier this week.Yucel works for the Die Welt newspaper and has been detained in Turkey for the past ten months without any formal charges.

5 Biblical Prophecies Fulfilled in 2017 and 5 More Expected in 2018-By Eliana Rudee January 5, 2018 , 12:48 pm-BREAKINGISRAELNEWS

“Indeed, my God does nothing Without having revealed His purpose To His servants the neviim.” Amos 3:7 (The Israel Bible™)-The year 2017 was packed with what many describe as “remarkable” or “unprecedented” events. Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration and his latest announcement that he sees Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the Jewish people are considered by believers to be prophetic  signs that the world is coming ever closer to the Messianic area.Breaking Israel News looks back on these prophetic moments and suggests five further prophecies that could be fulfilled in 2018.5 Biblical Prophecies Fulfilled in 2017-The ICEJ Parade of Nations during the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, October 10, 2017. 1. Jerusalem As A Place Of Assembly For Non-Jews-“All who survive of all those nations that came up against Jerusalem shall make a pilgrimage year by year to bow to the King Lord of Hosts and to observe Sukkot” (Zechariah 14:16).In 2017, Jerusalem became a place of assembly, a House of Prayer for all Nations, Jews and non-Jews alike, precisely as prophesied in Zechariah. Tourism to Jerusalem skyrocketed, with arrivals climbing by 25 percent compared to the 2016, and bringing in $5.8 billion of revenue. Such assembly was particularly evident during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, when tens of thousands of Christian tourists arrived to Jerusalem. According to Rabbi Tuly Weisz, fulfilling the prophetic vision for how Sukkot will be observed in the end of days, non-Jewish participation in the “Feast of the Tabernacles” played a significant role in bringing Jews closer to celebrating Sukkot the way it is described in the books of the prophet, and as it will be celebrated in the end of times.2. Eclipse Signifies Storms and Trouble For “King of the East”-“Yea, you shall leave in joy and be led home secure. Before you, mount and hill shall shout aloud, And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands (Isaiah 55:12). August’s solar eclipse came precisely at the beginning of the Hebrew month of Elul. Rabbi Yosef Berger, the rabbi of King David’s Tomb on Mount Zion, connected this to a prophecy written in a century-old mystic text of an eclipse occurring precisely at this time that will be followed by storms and trouble for the King of the East, who the rabbi identified as North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-un. Rabbi Berger maintained that North Korea will suffer a loss if its leader continues to taunt the US president.Rabbi Berger went on to explain that in Jewish mysticism, the moon represents the Jewish people and the sun represents the non-Jews. Thus, Rabbi Berger viewed the solar eclipse as a prophecy that Israel will be renewed and will come back from galut (exile) to rise again.3. Trump Visits Western Wall-“Thus said Hashem to Cyrus, His anointed one— Whose right hand He has grasped, treading down nations before him, ungirding the loins of kings, opening doors before him and letting no gate stay shut” (Isaiah 45:1).The world went into a turmoil when US President Donald Trump became the first sitting American president to visit the Kotel (Western Wall), raising the hopes of the Jewish people that a Second Temple reenactment may yet be seen in this generation. President Trump’s unwavering support for Jewish national aspirations linked him to Persian King Cyrus, whose connection to the Messiah is found in the Book of Isaiah. Much like Cyrus, Trump rules the greatest nation of the era and Cyrus, like Trump, was powerful and rich, but secular. Esoteric Gematria (numerology) hints identified the new president as having a role in the Messiah and his actions were clearly a step in that direction. Using the method to break down the value of Hebrew letters, Donald Trump’s name in Hebrew is also the numerical equivalent of “moshiach for the House of David.” Although no one has made the claim that Trump is moshiach (messiah), many believe that he is indeed helping the Jews to settle Israel and start building the Third Temple.Prime Minister Netanyahu addresses the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, September 2011. (Avi Ohayon/GPO)-4. UN Jerusalem Vote-“Behold, I will make Yerushalayim a bowl of reeling for the peoples all around. Yehuda shall be caught up in the siege upon Yerushalayim” (Zechariah 12:2).In the final weeks of the 2017, countless countries in the United Nations voted against President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the home of the future American embassy. Rabbi Shimon Apisdorf, an award-winning author and teacher for Yeshiva for the Nations, saw the UN vote, which sought to isolate Jerusalem from the world, as proof that the Third Temple will rise again. While the vote was an attempt by Israel’s enemies to “put Jerusalem under siege” and “isolate the city,” similar to what occurred with the destruction of Solomon’s Temple and the Babylonian Exile, Rabbi Apisdorf told Breaking Israel News, “The seeds of Messiah were hidden, planted in the destruction of the Temple.”  Likewise, he said, “This seems like a blow to Israel, but what is really happening is that the world is focused on the relationship of the Jewish people to Jerusalem, and only good things can come out of that.”Yeminite Aliyah-Ingathering of Exiles-“They shall know that I Hashem am their God when, having exiled them among the nations, I gather them back into their land and leave none of them behind” (Ezekiel 39:28).The year 2017 was a powerful year for immigration to Israel. As prophesied in the Bible, exile were returning to the land God promised to Abraham. Population statistics showed an increase of immigration with 28,400 immigrants making aliyah to Israel in 2017. New olim included Jews from four corners of the earth: 1,200 Ethiopian Jews, Bnei Menashe, Ukrainian Jews, Indian Jews, French Jews, American Jews, and many more.5 Prophecies We Expect To See in 2018-1. Moving the US Embassy-“I am the Lord, who called you with righteousness, I will strengthen your hand; I will protect you; I will set you for a covenant to the people, to be a light unto the nations; to open blind eyes; to remove a prisoner from confinement, dwellers in darkness from a dungeon” (Isaiah 42:6).In the new age of Jewish-Christian relations, Israel is finally taking its prophesied role as a light unto the nations. This will materialize fully when US President Trump will fulfill his promise to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. A major platform in his presidential campaign, this promise came about as a result of strong Evangelical Christian pressure on Trump to fulfill his campaign promises. This growing link between the Jewish People and the Christians is an unexpected development, flying in the face of a millennium of difficult relations, and unmistakably moving towards the post-Messiah age of peace and brotherhood. Given this new age of relations, unprecedented developments are surely in store.2. Sunni-Shia Divides-“He shall be a wild ass of a man; His hand against everyone, And everyone’s hand against him; He shall dwell alongside of all his kinsmen” (Genesis 16:12).An 800-year old prophecy in the ancient holy book of Yalkut Shimoni declares that when the King of Persia (Iran) will provoke the King of Arabia (Saudi Arabia), redemption is around the corner. As the descendants of Ishmael, war dominates the relations between brethren in the Arab world. Iran and Saudi Arabia have not seen peace for decades and this past year demonstrated an even greater struggle for regional dominance rooted in the Sunni-Shia divide. A prophecy in the Yalkut Shimoni, a collection of Biblical teachings believed to have been arranged in the 13th century, connects the political tension between Iran and Saudi Arabia with the full redemption of the Jewish people. As the redemption nears, this political tension between Iran and Saudi Arabia will only grow.“Rabbi Yizchok said: ‘The year that Melech HaMoshiach [Messiah the King] will be revealed, all the nations of the world will be provoking each other. The King of Persia (Iran) will provoke the King of Arabia, and the King of Arabia will go to Edom (the West) to take counsel, but the King of Persia will in turn, destroy the entire world. The nations of the world will be outraged and panicked. They will fall on their faces, and they will experience pains like birth pangs. Israel too will be outraged and in a state of panic and ask, where do we go? But say unto them, “My children, do not fear, ‘Higiyah zman geulatchem’  [the time of your redemption has come]. And in the last redemption will be different from the first which was followed by further bondage and pain. After this last redemption, you will not again experience any further pain or subjugation.”3.The North Korean Threat-“They have roused Me to jealousy with a no-god; they have provoked Me with their vanities; and I will rouse them to jealousy with a no-people; I will provoke them with a vile nation. For a fire is kindled in My nostril, and burneth unto the depths of the nether-world (She’ol), and devoureth the earth with her produce, and setteth ablaze the foundations of the mountains” (Deuteronomy 32:22).Years before North Korea was known to have nuclear weapons, a noted Israeli kabbalist (mystic) predicted that North Korea would become the nuclear key to the final war in the redemptive process. Rabbi Levi Sa’adia Nachmani, who correctly predicted the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973, discounted all of Israel’s greatest enemies when he said, “Not Syria, not Persia (Iran), and not Babylon (Iraq), and not Gaddafi (Libya).” Instead, Rabbi Nachmani named an unknown entity as the greatest threat: “Korea will arrive here,” he said.He based this prediction on the word ‘She’ol,’ which is the Hebrew word for hell, which is spelled the same as the Hebrew word for Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Indeed, as North Korea has increased its weapons testing and missile program, its intentions and capabilities are clear. A nuclear war could very well begin with North Korea attacking Seoul, expanding until it becomes the final war in the end of days.Written here in Hebrew is “King David”. The walls of the Old City of Jerusalem were lit up in honor of the occasion, welcoming the special Torah for the Messiah commissioned by Rabbi Yosef Berger. 4. Reestablishing the Davidic Dynasty-“For thus saith Hashem: There shall not be cut off unto David a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Yisrael“ (Jeremiah 33:17).According to genealogical records, there are indeed descendants of King David alive today. According to the prophecy, only direct descendants of King David are suitable to re-establish the Davidic Dynasty required for moshiach.Mitchell Dayan, who traces his lineage back 87 generations to King David, told Breaking Israel News, “The actual descendants may not know it, but there are descendants of King David alive today. This was prophesied in the Bible but it is also fact. Politics are irrelevant. It is going to happen, one day or another.”He continued, “The Moshiach is already here. Moshiach in Hebrew means ‘anointed.’ It is not a miracle. The family of David exists and is waiting for Israel to choose one and anoint him.”5.Building of the Third Temple-“Thus saith Koresh king of Paras: All the kingdoms of the earth hath Hashem, the God of heaven, given me; and He hath charged me to build Him a house in Yerushalayim, which is in Yehuda” ( Ezra 1:2).In a late-night surprise visit to the Western Wall several years ago, Russian President Vladmir Putin expressed his desire for the third Temple to be built. According to Chadrei Charedim, an Orthodox Hebrew news site, Putin said that the reason he came to the Temple Mount during his visit was, “to pray for the Temple to be built again.” This desire, coupled with a US President who is supportive of Israel, could create the political conditions for large-scale support for the Jewish right to Jerusalem as their spiritual inheritance. The Sanhedrin sent a letter to Putin and Trump, reminding them of the Biblically mandated role for non-Jewish kings to build the Third Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. The conflict in the halls of the UN will hopefully lead more world leaders to take an active role in rebuilding the Temple.

Report: Religious Jews’ Ascent to Temple Mount Up 75%-By JNI Media January 7, 2018 , 8:30 am-BREAKINGISRAELNEWS

” ‘From the time I brought My people out of the land of Egypt, I never chose a city from among all the tribes of Yisrael to build a House where My name might abide; nor did I choose anyone to be the leader of my people Yisrael.” II Chronicles 6:5 (The Israel Bible™)-The number of visits by religious Jews to the Temple Mount has increased by 75% in 2017, compared to 2016, according to the Yera’eh organization, which encourages Jewish ascent to the Temple Mount. In the past year there have been 25,628 religious Jews’ visits to the Temple Mount, compared with 14,626 last year, 11,001 visits in 2015, 11,754 in 2014, and only 5,658 visits by religious Jews in 2009.Religious Jews are counted separately from the other visitors, and are not allowed to enter the Temple Mount compound without police escort.Assaf Fried, spokesman for the Temple Organizations Headquarters, who promote Jewish ascent to the Temple Mount, attributes the increase in visits to the fact that, other than one attack on the Temple Mount in July, 2017, in which two Border Police officers were killed by Israeli Arabs, security in Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount is perceived by the Israeli public as being relatively calm.“Three years ago when you came to the mountain, you knew you were coming to a battlefield,” Fried said. “You’d know they’d yell you. Today a Jew who goes up to the mountain feels that he is welcome,” Fried said. Here are the stats issued by Year’eh at the conclusion of the civil year 2017:Religious Jews were allowed to be on the Temple Mount for 11% of the year, or 1,023 hours out of 8,760.Religious Jews were allowed to go to the Temple Mount on 63% of the days of 2017, or 232 days out of 365.86 Jews were arrested or detained on the Temple Mount on suspicion of “Jewish behavior” in 2017. This behavior ranged from saying a blessing on an apple, through closing one’s eyes and whispering, to crying, “Sh’ma Israel,” to bowing and prostrating.

Resident fears home vulnerable to sea after storm erodes ocean barrier-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-January 7, 2018

From Marguerite Wade's home in East Chezzetcook, N.S., she can watch — and hear — enormous waves crashing against the natural rock barrier that separates the freshwater lake in front of her home, from the Atlantic Ocean. But what might normally be a soothing sound now has Wade filled with worry. This week's weather bomb brought winds and storm surges so severe they tore open the wall-like structure, leaving the homes along Big Lake — also known as Meisner's Lake — vulnerable to the sea.Wade said in the 50 years she's lived along the lake, she's only seen this happen once before, less than a decade ago."It didn't have a prayer this time," she said of the possibility of the wall withstanding Thursday night's storm."My first look [in the morning] is always where that hole was eight years ago. And I looked and I saw it coming in, I saw big waves."Trying to inspect the damage-The hole in the stone barrier meant the freshwater lake drained into the ocean at a rapid pace on Saturday morning, leaving only patches of ice behind. Normally, Wade said the lake is about six feet deep.Wade worries that when the tide rolls in, the erosion to the barrier will allow the lake to overfill."When the tide goes out, the lake fills into the ocean. So it's constantly wearing back and forth on the wall...It will eventually deteriorate and flood out the homes around the lake," she said.Wade tried to go and inspect the damage on Saturday afternoon. The only way to get to the break in the natural stone barrier is by walking along its edge. But about halfway there, Wade noticed two smaller holes. There wasn't water passing through them yet, but with the tide coming in, she didn't want to risk heading out any further.Risk of flooding-Wade says if the lake begins to overflow with sea water, it will follow the stream that feeds the freshwater lake and end up flooding her home and a dozen others. There's also the fear it could wash out two nearby roads. She said when the wall was breached eight years ago, the province's Department of Natural Resources brought in specialists who were able to fix the wall before flooding happened. On Friday, Wade contacted the department, but she was told only that someone would be in touch next week."The unfortunate part is mother nature doesn't wait until Monday. So we sit here and wait and wonder," she said.Area to be assessed: DNR-Spokesperson for DNR, Bruce Nunn, told CBC in an email that staff were conducting an inventory of coastal park land damages on Friday."The land breach at East Chezzetcook was identified for a full assessment and consideration of options over the coming days," he said."We continue to urge people visiting provincial park lands especially in coastal areas to use care and caution."Wade wishes the department would at least make contact with the residents to let them know whether they should be prepared to leave their homes."What do we do? I've got chickens running around here, wrap them up and put them in a lifeboat I guess," she said, chuckling."But it's very devastating....It's the unknown."

Frozen machinery, sick cows: Farmers struggle during extreme cold snap-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-January 7, 2018

The cows at Ferme Racine in Casselman, Ont., let farmers know when their barn's pipes have frozen."If they're all surrounding the [empty water] bucket, you'll see there's something wrong," said dairy farmer Marc-Antoine Racine."You can see they're thirsty, so you know it's time to reheat the pipes."Livestock farmers in eastern Ontario are dealing with frozen equipment and sick animals during this winter's extreme cold snap, with prolonged stretches of temperatures below –20 C and wind chill making it feel as cold as –40.Racine said in a phone interview Saturday that a diesel tank and feed machinery at his farm have also frozen up.But it's the pipes that freeze once a day — or more."You go [to the barn] in the morning and hope there's nothing frozen," Racine said. "Because if there is, you know you'll lose minimum an hour unfreezing the barn."'A lot of pneumonia'-Unlike dairy cattle, beef cattle spend much of their time outside, said Amber Payne of Arc Acres Farm in south Ottawa. So while they've dealt with frozen infrastructure, the big drop in temperature means their cattle are also getting sick."When the temperature drops down to –40, they find it really hard," Payne said."You deal with a lot of pneumonia in those cases. You'll see cattle that look a little bit lousy, they're not eating as aggressively, they've got a cough … they could die quite quickly if you don't treat it right away."Payne said it's more difficult right now to keep cattle in good health because an extremely wet summer wasn't good for hay, which cattle eat over the winter."Farmers are quite adaptable in these situations [but the cold] just makes the chores a little longer every day," she said."Sleepless nights, getting up in the middle of the night and checking things, worrying about babies being born too — there's a lot of cows that are typically due in January."There are also pigs at Arc Acres Farm, which Payne said do well in the cold — as long as they have good bedding, limited exposure to the wind, and other pigs to huddle up with.

Natural ice remains unsafe at any temperature, police say-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-January 7, 2018

As the city goes from record-breaking bone chilling temperatures to more seasonal weather in the coming days, Toronto police are warning the public against venturing out on natural bodies of ice."No ice is safe ice," Const. Corey Smith of Toronto Police Service's marine unit said. "Just because the ice looks like it's fine there's lot of cracks involved in the ice surface."Smith says people walking out onto ice is a big concern for police now that frosty winter weather has arrived.Police say they saw 20 to 30 people walking out on the ice at Toronto's harbour on Friday. The harbour has been frozen for the first time in years after days of temperatures well below zero.Walking onto ice covered natural bodies of water is risky because ice works a lot like tectonic plates, Smith says."If they move around, you could find weak spots where even though the ice is thick, it could open up and you could end up falling into the water," he adds.Despite the number of people walking out onto the ice on the Toronto Harbour, police have noticed that there's open water on the east end of the harbour. The risk will also likely grow once temperatures rise."It only takes a day of really bright sunshine on a warm day to severely compromise the thickness and structural integrity of the ice that's there," he says.City rinks remain safer way to skate-Your best bet for staying safe skating during the winter remains skating at one of the dozens of city skating rinks. At Grenadier Pond, one of Toronto's most popular skating spots, the city says a team of ice engineers inspects the ice daily and flags the ice when it's unsafe to skate."For the most part it's against the municipal code to skate on the lake or in ponds or parks, but where possible, where we're able to test this ice and ensure it's safe, folks are invited," said Matthew Cutler, spokesperson for Toronto Parks and Recreation. For those who take the risk to go out on unsafe ice on bodies of water, however, Toronto police say they're prepared."l wouldn't say we mind doing them. This is what we're here for," Smith says. "This is why we train, what we train for and have the equipment we do."

Cold snap raises concerns about coast guard's aging icebreakers in the St. Lawrence-[CBC]-January 7, 2018

A mechanical break that kept icebreaker Terry Fox from providing assistance to a trapped ferry between Quebec City and Lévis earlier this week is renewing calls to replace the coast guard's aging icebreaker fleet."The fleet of icebreakers is old," said Steven Blaney, the Conservative MP for Bellechasse-Les-Etchemins-Lévis.The ferry was eventually towed to shore by a private company and the Terry Fox icebreaker is now undergoing repairs so that it can be up and running again. After the incident on Wednesday, the ferry service between Quebec City and Lévis had to be cancelled Friday because of the accumulation of ice along the St. Lawrence River."We need icebreakers," said Blaney. "Even with the existing strategy to replace the ships, the fleet will continue to grow old."While a spokesperson for the coast guard acknowledged the aging vessels, she also defended the entity's work over the last week."We have deployed all of our ships and we're covering all of our key sectors," said Julie Gascon. The criticism raised after the incident involving the Quebec City ferry also failed to mention the efforts made by the coast guard, she added."I really think it's a shame," she said. "Our teams are working day and night to serve clients."Davie shipyard offers help-The Davie shipyard in Lévis has also offered to loan four of its powerful icebreakers to the coast guard to subsidize number of ships available during the winter along the St. Lawrence River.Frédérick Boisvert, the spokesperson for the company, said that this week's incident shows that the coast guard's current icebreakers are at the end of their life cycle."The federal fleet is rusting so quickly that it can only be replaced," he said. The proposed project to replace the ships would also create 300 jobs for the struggling Quebec-based company, he added. Davie Canada laid off nearly 400 employees right before the Christmas holidays."I think this is the perfect illustration of the pertinence of the Davie shipyard in what we're calling the debacle of the coast guard because the ships are so old," he said.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should take the proposal into serious consideration and act before it's too late, said Blaney."It's time for him to make a good resolution, that he forget his vacation in the Caribbean with Aga Khan and that he think about the Canada's Nordic reality," he said.-Rising costs-Paul Barbeau, a naval architect, warns that simply carrying out repairs to the old icebreakers isn't enough."Our icebreakers have worked very hard and they are tired," he said. "There is no doubt that if we want to maintain that reliability that we have to get new ones.""We can't continue to repair them constantly — work conditions are very difficult."The aging fleet could lead to higher costs for maritime transport and consumers could end up having to pay more at the end of the day, he added."The risks for ship owners will be higher so insurance will cost more," said Barbeau. "Ship owners will have to put savings aside for the unexpected."

Quebec emergency rooms filled beyond capacity with flu cases-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-January 7, 2018

It's flu season, and many of Quebec's emergency rooms are over capacity as a result.Hospitals normally experience some overcrowding this time of year, but ERs in the Montérégie and Laurentian regions are operating at double capacity. In Quebec City, too, several ERs were filled beyond their limit, including the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Saint-Sacrement and Saint-François d'Assise hospitals."We are really in the midst of the flu season right now," said Dr. Karl Weiss, head of infectious diseases at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. The Jewish General's emergency room was at 175-per cent capacity on Saturday. Laurentian Hospital's was at 156 per cent, and the McGill University Health Centre was at 99-per cent capacity."The holiday season is always a kind of triggering factor for the flu because everybody's together," Weiss said. "The grandparents are meeting the grandchildren."Some hospitals are putting restrictions in place to deal with the issue. Longueuil's Pierre Boucher Hospital, for instance, won't allow sick patients to be accompanied unless necessary.Know when you need to go to emergency-Quebec's Health Ministry only recommends seeking medical assistance if you have difficulty breathing and a lingering fever in addition to the other flu symptoms. The flu is viral so a prescription for antibiotics won't help, Weiss said.He added that if a fever persists for more than four days and symptoms are not improving, it could be time to seek medical help. Also, if breathing becomes difficult, Weiss recommends heading to emergency. It could be a sign of pneumonia. The MUHC advises those concerned about their health to first call Info-Santé (dial 811), where nurses are available to answer questions.Next, the hospital centre recommends visiting a family doctor, or locating a walk-in clinic if a patient doesn't have one.Of course for situations that require immediate care, the hospital urges people to call 911 or go directly to emergency.Flu vaccine could be less effective this year-Quebec's Health Ministry also recommends getting a flu vaccination to prevent infection. But Canada's chief public health officer says it's possible that this year's flu vaccine may have limited effectiveness against a particularly severe strain of influenza A, which appears to be dominant throughout Canada."In Canada it's still too early to actually tell how effective this vaccine will be," Dr. Theresa Tam told CBC News. "There is a potential ... of low-vaccine effectiveness, but we really can't tell at this point in time."The H3N2 strain, a subtype of influenza A, is associated with more severe illness among children and the elderly, causing a majority of flu cases.According to Tam, the potential for lower vaccine effectiveness makes it even more important that Canadians take other measures to protect themselves against the flu. These include handwashing, coughing into your sleeve, disposing of used tissues and staying home when you're sick.
