UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United States is making progress in talks with North Korean ally China on imposing new U.N. sanctions on Pyongyang over its latest missile test, but the "true test" will be what measures Russia agrees to, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said on Tuesday.Haley told reporters she was pleased with the initial response from China on a U.S. proposal for new U.N. sanctions and said China had showed 'seriousness.'"We know that China has been sharing and negotiating with Russia," said Haley, adding that the "true test will be what they worked out with Russia."(Reporting by Michelle Nichols; Editing by James Dalgleish)

Heavy monsoon rains lash western India, killing 16-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

NEW DELHI — At least 16 people have been killed this week in heavy monsoon rains that have lashed western India, including the desert state of Rajasthan, with more than 24,000 villagers evacuated to higher ground, officials said Tuesday.Hundreds of rescuers using motor boats saved 789 people, including some pregnant women, from being swept away by the swirling floodwaters in six districts in Gujarat state, said Ranvijay Singh, a government official. The rescuers found six bodies in flooded villages on Monday and Tuesday, raising the death toll in Gujarat to 70 since the start of the monsoon season, which runs from June through September.Mount Abu, a popular hill station in Rajasthan, received 80 centimetres (32 inches) of rain on Monday, surpassing a 1992 record of 66 centimetres (26 inches) of rain in a 24-hour period, according to the state flood relief department. At least 10 people have died in the past two days due to drowning and house collapses in Rajasthan, where air force helicopters evacuated 450 people from inundated areas in Jalore, Pali and Sirohi districts, the flood relief department said.At least 60 people have died in northeastern Assam state due to flooding since the start of the monsoon season in June.Another 14 people died in the nearby state of Arunachal Pradesh last month after a mudslide swept through a village. The Associated Press.

Thousands of wildfire evacuees return home but 'unstable' conditions continue-[CBC]-YAHOONEWS-July 24, 2017

The current number of wildfire evacuees in B.C. is estimated at 20,300 — down from 45,000 on Friday.Emergency Management B.C.'s executive director Chris Duffy said the sharp drop is a result of evacuees from Cache Creek, Princeton, 100 Mile House and Lac La Hache returning to their homes.Duffy said the number of evacuees remains "very fluid," as there are currently 36 evacuation orders and 40 evacuation alerts in effect across B.C.There are currently 154 wildfires burning across the province, including 19 new fires that started on Sunday.-Thunderstorms in forecast-Navi Saini with the B.C. Wildfire Service said that while many fires have stabilized, the forecast continues to be unpredictable."[Tuesday] is expected to be hot, and unfortunately we are expecting to see unstable conditions again on Wednesday in the form of thunderstorms," she said.Saini said that no major soaking rain for is expected for at least four to five days.Heavy winds in the Salmon Arm, Revelstoke and Vernon regions on Sunday caused power outages affecting 430 residents in the Loon Lake and Spokane Lake areas but did not result in significant growth for existing wildfires.Duffy said he is unsure when Williams Lake residents will be able to return home but hopes to have good news for the 10,000 affected residents by "early to mid-week."Williams Lake mayor Walt Cobb said he is working to ensure that local grocery stores are stocked and the hospital is staffed when residents return."At this stage of the game it's up to the fire centre, but we're ready to go, so as soon as we get the clearance, we'll be doing our thing," he said.A resiliency centre has also been established in town to support returning evacuees.-Advice for those returning home-100 Mile House mayor Mitch Campsall said his city saw a "steady stream of people" returning throughout the day."I couldn't have [had] a better day," he said. "I think I've got the best community in the world."Duffy advised evacuees returning to their homes to follow directions about which routes are safe to travel and avoid taking shortcuts."Bring a few days of essential supplies when you return home — some groceries, water. Be able to take care of yourself for a few days," he said."Obviously, communities are preparing to have full services there but in an abundance of caution have some supplies for yourself."He also said all residents should have a safety plan in place and be prepared to evacuate within minutes, should an evacuation order be reissued.

France appeals for help in fighting Cote d'Azur fires-Ambre TOSUNOGLU, Claudine RENAUD-Agence France-Presse-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

Artigues (France) (AFP) - France asked for Europe's help Tuesday in fighting wild fires that have consumed swathes of forest in the southeast, one of which is raging near the popular resort of Saint-Tropez.Over 4,000 firefighters and troops backed by 19 water bombers have been mobilised to extinguish the flames. At least seven firefighters have been injured since the fires broke out on Monday, according to the authorities. The blazes have devoured nearly 4,000 hectares (15 square miles) of land along the Mediterranean coast, in the mountainous interior and on the island of Corsica -- in the middle of the holiday season. With strong winds and tinder dry conditions creating a dangerous mix, the government asked its European Union partners to send two extra air tankers -- a request immediately fulfilled by Italy, according to the EU.A fire in La Croix-Valmer near Saint-Tropez, the resort frequented by the rich and famous, had been contained, local fire chief Philippe Gambe de Vergnes said Tuesday afternoon. But the blaze had already gutted 400 hectares of coastal forest in an area dotted with homes, he said.More than 200 people had to be removed from the area.La Croix-Valmer's deputy mayor Rene Carandante described a desolate landscape of blackened headlands fringed by charred umbrella pines, where green forest had once framed the azure waters of the Mediterranean."It's a disaster area. There's nothing left," he said.Around 80 kilometres (50 miles) inland, 300 hectares of pines and oaks went up in smoke near the village of Saint-Maximin-La-Sainte-Baume.A local official accused the authorities of failing to regularly remove dry undergrowth, making the forest a fire hazard. The French island of Corsica, situated midway between France and Italy, was also assessing the damage caused by a towering inferno.Scores of firefighters worked through the night to tamp down a wall of flames that had threatened homes in the northeastern town of Biguglia.A resident, whose house had at one point been in danger, spoke of "apocalyptic" scenes. In the end, disaster was averted after the wind died down, but the blaze engulfed 1,800 hectares of forest and burned several vehicles. The Luberon, an area of hilltop villages and lavender fields in Provence, also fought fires on Monday.Around 100 homes around the village of Mirabeau and a neighbouring hamlet had to be evacuated, but by Tuesday firefighters had managed to secure residential areas.Further east, in Carros, north of Nice, a house, three vehicles and a warehouse went up in flames, according to regional authorities.Speaking to France Info radio, Mayor Charles Scibetta described waking up to a "lunar landscape" and said the inhabitants had a lucky escape.Southeast France is experiencing an exceptionally hot, dry summer that has made it especially vulnerable to fires.- Riviera becoming 'bushier' -"All of France is mobilised," the head of the fire service in southeast France, Colonel Gregory Allione told France Info, adding that extra firefighters had been drafted in from the north.Thomas Curt, a director at the Irsea institute for research into the environment and agriculture, said a fall-off in agriculture in southeast France since the 1970s had made it more prone to fires."Farmland is contracting and the forest is naturally expanding, making the area bushier," he said.A proliferation in the numbers of homes, roads and power lines near forests also increased the fire hazard, he added. In mid-July, a blaze believed to have been ignited by a cigarette butt tossed out of a car ripped through 800 hectares of land near Aix-en-Provence.burs-cb/gj/adm.

Aggressive tick whose bite makes people allergic to red meat is arriving in Canada-[CBC]-yahoonews-July 21, 2017

Les Waters will never forget his reaction after he ate a hamburger at a restaurant in January 2015."It's like your throat swells up, you can't breathe, your blood pressure drops, and you black out," said the 63-year-old man from Harcourt, a small community in eastern Ontario.Waters, an avid hunter and meat lover, learned he had developed a rare allergy to everything made from beef, pork and lamb.A bite from a tiny tick, recently spotted in Canada, is to blame. The culprit, the lone star tick, is named for the white dot or lone star on the back of the female. Native to the southeastern United States, it has slowly migrated north, hitching a ride on birds, deer, and domestic animals.Waters is not sure where the tick found him, but he suspects it might have been on a hunting trip in northern Quebec. The lone star tick has been found in neighbouring New Brunswick."The two we have which were contributed to us by people in New Brunswick, one fed from a human and one fed from a dog," said Prof. Vett Lloyd, a biologist at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B.Dr. Lloyd says the lone star tick, unlike other ticks, is aggressive. "It is one of the few that will actually chase their prey. Once they know that you're there, they will trundle towards you," she said. How these ticks cause the allergy that affects Waters, which was first identified in the 1990s, is complicated. When the tick bites a person, it spits a protein called alpha gal into the blood. That's a compound present in beef, pork and lamb, and humans usually digest it harmlessly. But when it appears elsewhere in a person's body, for example in the bloodstream, it causes a strong reaction. The body develops antibodies to fight back, and the battle causes symptoms that range from a general rash to a severe anaphylactic reaction. There is no treatment yet.It took almost two years for Waters to get a diagnosis from an allergist, and much of the work was through his internet sleuthing.Part of the problem is that the effects of this allergy, unlike food allergies, don't appear immediately. "It comes hours after I eat something. They [the doctors] had no clue, basically. Now they know about it. Not all of them, but they're getting better at it," he said.-'A novel allergy'-Dr. Gordon Sussman, an allergist in Toronto, says, "It's a novel allergy that sort of changes our concept because you can see reactions occurring several hours later. It's going to change the way we investigate allergies."Lloyd says that while sightings of the lone star tick are rare in Canada, that might soon change."There's going to be more of them simply with climate change, with the environment warming. Ticks that were comfortable in the south are going to be more comfortable in the north," she said. The Public Health Agency of Canada is aware that the lone star tick is expanding its range and is identifying Canadian locations that may soon fall within it.-A boring diet-As for Waters, who loves to hunt, there's an irony in developing this allergy. "I have all sorts of wild game in my freezer and I just have to give it away now. I'm just going to have to give this up," he says.He carries an EpiPen now and avoids red meat, although the temptation is always there.Waters calls the allergy "an annoyance."Still  for the diehard carnivore, it's a tough transition. "The taste of a good burger, a nice moose steak or some venison loin chops. You get very bored with the fish or the chicken over and over," he said.

Vatican switches off fountains as Italy battles drought-Agence France-Presse-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

Rome (AFP) - The historic fountains in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican lay empty Tuesday after the tiny city state turned them off as Italy struggles with a prolonged draught. The dry basins of the two fountains by 17th-century sculptors Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini were symbolic of a period of sweltering temperatures which have devastated farms and forced Rome to consider water rationing.Ten regions across the country have called for a state of emergency to be declared after Italy suffered the second-driest spring in 60 years and rainfall in the first six months of the year was down 33 percent. The dry spell has deprived Italy of 20 billion cubic metres of water so far this year -- the equivalent of Lake Como. And there is little hope for those anxiously watching the skies in the capital: the national meteorological service has predicted small showers in the coming days but not enough to relieve the pressure. Some 300 of the city's famous "big nose" public fountains -- so called because of their shape -- have already been turned off and more will follow. The Lazio region is considering rationing water in Rome from Saturday for 1.5 million inhabitants for up to eight hours a day -- though the proposal is being fiercely challenged by the city's anti-establishment mayor. The rationing threat follows the decision to stop withdrawing water from Lake Bracciano near Rome because it had dropped to such a low level that it risked sparking an environmental disaster.Acea, the utility firm which runs Rome's water system, has slammed the stop on using water from the lake as "unnecessary" and said the move left it no choice but to cut off supplies to residents.- 'Rome water network leaking' -Farmers from the southern island of Sicily to the country's northern plains are also raising the alarm. The Po river, on which 35 percent of the nation's agricultural production depends, lies 50 centimetres (20 inches) lower than the same period last year, according to Coldiretti, Italy's agricultural union. The union estimated that losses suffered by farmers and live-stock owners would exceed two billion euros ($2.3 billion), with production of crops from cereals to olives and tomatoes hit in two-thirds of the country.Geologist Mario Tozzi told AFP that fountains were not the problem, the real issue was wasted water."The water network in Rome is leaking, almost 40 litres out of 100 are lost," he said, adding that the cost of repairing damaged pipelines across Italy was estimated at about 60 billion euros. He also pointed the finger at the low price of water: "Farmers pay so little that they don't bother to put in place a system that would allow them to save water, it makes more sense for them to waste it," he said.

Pope's treasurer faces sex abuse charges in Australia, a grim reminder for his home town-[Reuters]-By Byron Kaye-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

BALLARAT, Australia (Reuters) - One of the pope's top advisers, Cardinal George Pell, makes his first court appearance in Australia this week on charges of historic sex crimes, a bitter reminder for his home town reeling from more than a dozen abuse cases.Pell, the Vatican's economy minister, last month became the most senior Catholic to be charged with sex crimes. He has vowed to fight the still-unspecified charges, calling them false and the result of a "relentlelss character assassination". He declined to respond to interview requests for this story. He is expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.Police have not released details of the charges, but the start of Pell's court battle in Melbourne revisits a troubled past for Ballarat, the former gold town of 100,000 people 75 miles (120 km) to the west where Pell grew up and cut his teeth as a priest in the 1970s and 1980s.Before a 2013 state government inquiry into institutional abuse, Ballarat was best known to Australians as the site of the Eureka Stockade, a bloody 1854 uprising by goldminers against colonial authorities. But the government inquiry exposed shocking accounts of child abuse and allegations of a cover-up in the Ballarat diocese over many generations, sparking a more powerful federal Royal Commission that heard testimony from hundreds of people, including allegations against 17 priests in Ballarat alone. At least five priests from the diocese have been jailed for abuse. Supporters of the victims have tied hundreds of colorful ribbons to the fence outside the city's main Catholic church, St Patrick's.Pell, 76, testified at both inquiries, mostly about his knowledge of the handling of complaints against the church when he was a young priest in the 1970s and 1980s. He repeatedly denied direct knowledge of practices which, according to the testimony of others, involved moving suspect priests between parishes to avoid detection.Neither inquiry heard complaints against Pell himself. Victoria state police, which brought the charges against Pell last month, haven't said where the charges originated and haven't offered any detail other than that they were for multiple historic sex offences.Police declined to comment on specific charges. The Royal Commission, which will deliver its final report to the government later this year, also declined to comment."The important thing is that the result of it will be truth and justice, no matter what the truth is," said Reiny Strybosch, who has lived in Ballarat since 1956, on his way to Mass.-FOCUS ON BALLARAT-Pell became the Vatican's first economy minister in 2014 as Pope Francis sought to end financial scandals.Thousands of miles away, the Royal Commission rolled on, with much attention on Ballarat. Data released by the inquiry showed Ballarat was the diocese with the most alleged perpetrator priests after major cities Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.Ballarat had more alleged perpetrator priests than Perth, a city of 2 million, according to the data.Ballarat had 3 percent of Australian Catholic abuse complaints since 1950, despite having just 0.4 percent of the country's population. Reuters was unable to independently confirm the data. Before he was charged, Pell's seniority and political connections had made him a target for many abuse survivors' frustration about what they believed was reluctance by church and government to listen. When Pell said in 2016 that he wanted to give evidence from Rome via videolink because he was too sick to fly home, a group of survivors, mostly from Ballarat, traveled to Italy to watch him testify in person. Now that Pell is to appear before the court, some of those survivors say they want the cardinal treated like any other member of the church accused of sex crimes."I can't see any reason that he won't get a fair and just trial," said abuse survivor Philip Nagle, an agronomist. "I'd like to see the claimants get a fair and just trial too."(For a graphic on Australia Catholic Church clergy abuse claims click - http://tmsnrt.rs/2vBoPHs)(Reporting by Byron Kaye; Editing by Nick Macfie)

Israel removes Jerusalem metal detectors, Palestinians reject new measures-[Reuters]-By Ori Lewis-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel removed metal detectors from entrances to the Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City on Tuesday in favor of CCTV cameras, hoping to calm days of bloodshed, but Palestinians said the modified security measures were still unacceptable.Israel installed the detectors at entry points to Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem after two police guards were fatally shot on July 14, setting off the bloodiest clashes between Israelis and Palestinians in years. The spike in tensions and the deaths of three Israelis and four Palestinians in violence on Friday and Saturday raised international alarm and prompted a session of the United Nations Security Council to consider ways of defusing the crisis."All parties should work to reduce these tensions and we offer whatever assistance we can in helping to do this," Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told the Security Council in New York. "At the holy sites, it's vital that both access and security be ensured." Washington has already held talks with Israel and Jordan to help resolve the crisis.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the senior Muslim cleric who oversees Al-Aqsa compound both dismissed the new Israeli measures and demanded all of them be removed."All new Israeli measures put in place since (July 14) must be removed so things can go back to normal in Jerusalem and we can resume our work regarding bilateral relations," Abbas said at the beginning of a meeting with the Palestinian leadership. The Waqf, the religious body that runs the Islamic sites in the Al-Aqsa compound, said worshippers would continue to stay away from the elevated, marble-and-stone plaza - Islam's third holiest site - and pray in the streets outside.Jews revere the compound as the place where two ancient temples once stood.A Waqf spokesman said it was awaiting a decision of a technical committee but was demanding the situation revert to the way it was before the metal detectors were installed.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet of senior ministers voted to remove the metal detector gates early on Tuesday after a meeting lasting several hours.-NEW CCTV CAMERAS-A statement issued after the security cabinet meeting said it had decided to heed a recommendation of Israeli security bodies and replace the detectors with "smart checking" devices.Municipal workers began work in some of the narrow stone-paved streets around the Aqsa compound to install overhead metal beams that will hold closed-circuit TV cameras. Israeli media said there were plans to invest in advanced camera systems. The cabinet statement added that it had allocated up to 100 million shekels ($28 million) for the equipment and for additional policing over the next six months.CCTV images indicated that the two Israeli police officers on guard duty were shot dead by three Israeli Arabs who had concealed weapons inside the Aqsa compound. The dispute, like many in the Holy Land, is about much more than security devices, taking in issues of sovereignty, religious freedom, occupation and Palestinian nationalism. Muslims refer to the compound as the Noble Sanctuary while Jews call it the Temple Mount.Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Israel stood to lose most in the dispute and echoed calls for the removal of new security systems. "I have heard of Israel's decision to remove the metal detectors, and I hope the rest will follow...We expect Israel to take steps for the peace of the region."The walled Old City is part of East Jerusalem that Israel captured from Jordan in a 1967 war and later annexed, declaring the city its "eternal indivisible capital" in a move not recognized internationally. Palestinians claim East Jerusalem for the capital of a future state they are seeking. But on top of the outbreak of violence mainly in the Jerusalem area, a move on Friday by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to suspend security coordination, plus international criticism, cranked up pressure on Israel.Netanyahu was further hampered by a fatal shooting at the Israeli Embassy in Jordan on Sunday when an Israeli security guard was attacked and shot dead two Jordanians.A crowd of Jordanians gathered at one of the funerals on Tuesday and called on their government to close the Israeli Embassy.Jordan is the custodian of Jerusalem's Muslim holy sites and King Abdullah has called on Israel to return to the pre-July 14 status quo and lift all unilateral measures taken since the attack on the policemen.Jews and anyone else visiting the ancient Western Wall - the holiest site where Jews are permitted to pray - at the foot of the Aqsa compound must pass through airport-style security screening, including metal detectors.(Additional reporting by Ali Sawafta, and Nidal al-Mughrabi in Gaza, Michelle Nichols; writing by Ori Lewis; editing by Mark Heinrich)

Muslims keep up shrine boycott despite Israeli concessions-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

JERUSALEM — Muslim leaders urged the faithful Tuesday to keep up their prayer protests and avoid entering a contested Jerusalem shrine, even after Israel dismantled metal detectors that initially triggered the tensions.Israel said it would replace the metal detectors with new security arrangements based on "advanced technology" to be installed in the next six months. This reportedly refers to sophisticated cameras.Muslim clerics have demanded that Israel restore the situation at the shrine — the third-holiest in Islam and the most sacred in Judaism — to what it was before it installed the metal detectors last week. The clerics said Tuesday they need time to study the proposed new Israeli measures but suggested a decision could be made by the end of the day."We need to know all the details before we decide to pray inside the compound," said Mohammed Hussein, the top Muslim cleric, or mufti, in Jerusalem.Muslim worshippers heeded the clergy's call, with dozens performing noon prayers Tuesday in the streets outside the shrine. The continued protests meant that the escalating crisis between Israel and the Muslim world, which began in mid-July, was not defused, even after Israel backed down on the metal detectors.Jordan, the Muslim custodian of the shrine, has played a key role in trying to end the showdown over the holy site.Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said the kingdom wants "calm to return" to the shrine and to see a historic status quo there restored. Israel must "revoke all new measures on the ground," he said.Jordan's position on the continued Muslim protests and the Israeli security plan was not clear from his comments.Over the weekend, Jordan's efforts were complicated by a shooting at the Israeli Embassy in Amman, where an Israeli guard killed two Jordanians after being attacked by one with a screwdriver.A 24-hour standoff was resolved after a phone call between Jordan's King Abdullah II and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Jordan initially said the guard could not leave without an investigation, but then allowed him and the rest of the embassy staff to leave to Israel late Monday. The timing of the events — the evacuation of the diplomats, followed by the removal of the metal detectors — suggested a larger deal had been struck between the two countries. Both Israel and Jordan denied such a trade-off had taken place. The 37-acre (15-hectare) holy site in Jerusalem's Old City sits on the fault line of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and has triggered major confrontations before.Israel had erected metal detectors at the gates to the Muslim-administered site last week after Arab gunmen killed two Israeli police guards there two days earlier. The move incensed the Muslim world amid allegations that Israel was trying to expand control over the site under the guise of security — a claim Israel denies. The installation of the metal detectors set off widespread protests and deadly Israeli-Palestinian violence in the past week. Large crowds of Muslims prayed outside the shrine in protest every day, refusing to pass through the metal detectors.Israel has denied it has a hidden agenda, portraying the metal detectors as a needed security measure. However, the Israeli government has come under growing diplomatic pressure to reconsider the decision. It also faced growing domestic criticism that it had acted hastily, without weighing the repercussions of installing new devices at the site. The diplomatic crisis with Jordan lent more urgency to finding a solution. The deal also coincided with a visit to Israel and Jordan by Jason Greenblatt, President Donald Trump's Mideast envoy. His visit marked the first U.S. involvement since the start of the crisis over the shrine.Israel's security Cabinet announced the decision to remove the metal detectors early Tuesday. It said police would increase the deployment of forces until the new measures are in place. The statement said the government would budget 100 million shekels ($28 million) to implement the security plan over a period of "up to six months."Israel's proposal set off rumours among Palestinians that the "smart cameras" Israel plans to install could see through clothing and could prove particularly embarrassing to women.Israeli police addressed the rumours Tuesday, saying in a statement that it does not use any type of camera that harms anyone's privacy "and has no intention of using such cameras in the future."The cameras are to protect public safety, the statement said.Israel captured the Old City compound, along with other territories sought for a Palestinian state, in the 1967 war. Under arrangements put in place then, Muslims administer the site and Jews can visit, but not pray there. As custodian, Jordan has the final say over Muslim policies at the shrine but also needs to consider public opinion, including among Palestinians in the Holy Land.Jordan's ruling Hashemite dynasty draws much of its legitimacy from its role as protector of the holy site. However, it also maintains strategic, if discreet, security ties with Israel — a relationship that has survived several crises and repeated friction over the Jerusalem shrine. The swift resolution of the latest diplomatic row reflected the overriding interest by both countries to protect the relationship. However, the peace treaty with Israel remains unpopular in Jordan, and tensions at the shrine and from the embassy shooting inflamed anti-Israel sentiments. An acrimonious session of Jordan's parliament was cut short Tuesday after lawmakers walked out in protest of the government's handling of the shooting. The session began with Interior Minister Ghaleb al-Zobi presenting the initial findings of the investigation. He confirmed previous accounts that the guard fired after being attacked with a screwdriver by one of two Jordanians delivering furniture to a residential building linked to the embassy. The attack was preceded by a verbal dispute, the minister said. The Jordanian was later identified as Mohammed Jawawdeh, the 16-year-old son of the owner of a furniture store. The owner of the building, who stood next to Jawawdeh during the confrontation, also was hit by gunfire and later died of his wounds.Hundreds of mourners attended the teen's funeral. Mourners chanted slogans in support of the Jerusalem shrine and called Jawawdeh a "martyr" who died in defence of the holy site.Meanwhile, Netanyahu praised the guard for acting "calmly" during the incident. Netanyahu met the guard and Israel's ambassador to Amman on Tuesday in Jerusalem.___Laub reported from the West Bank. Air strikes, shelling strain Moscow-backed Damascus truce-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Air strikes killed at least nine people in the Eastern Ghouta area near Damascus overnight and insurgent shelling from the rebel-held area landed near the Russian embassy on Tuesday, a war monitor reported. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the deaths in the air strikes in the Eastern Ghouta town of Arbin marked the first civilian casualties since a Russian-backed truce in the area came into effect. The Syrian military declared a cessation of hostilities there on Saturday. But Russia, a military ally of President Bashar al-Assad, dismissed reports of air strikes in the area as "an absolute lie" meant to discredit Moscow's peacemaking efforts."During working contacts with representatives of opposition groups in Eastern Ghouta it was confirmed that no military actions had been conducted in this de-escalation zone, there had been no air strikes," the Russian defense ministry spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday.Russia said on Monday it had deployed military police in Eastern Ghouta to try to enforce a de-escalation zone it said it had agreed with the Syrian opposition there. In a second statement, issued late on Tuesday, the Russian Defence Ministry said it had delivered 10 tons of food and medical supplies to Eastern Ghouta, and evacuated sick and injured civilians from opposition-held areas.Tuesday's shelling near the Russian embassy marked the first time rebels had hit government-held areas of central Damascus since the truce began. The Observatory said the overnight air strikes wounded 30 people in Eastern Ghouta while another four were injured by further air strikes that targeted the area on Tuesday morning. The Civil Defence for rural Damascus, a rescue service operating in the area, said the dead included five children and two women. In a statement on its Facebook page, it put the number of wounded and missing at 50. The air strikes hit the area at 11 p.m. (2000 GMT), it said. There was no immediate comment from the Syrian military on the report, and no mention of air strikes by state media.Witnesses said three mortar shells landed in the neighborhood where the Russian embassy is located in northeastern Damascus. There were no reports of casualties. The Syrian army, with military support from Russia and Iran, has dealt the opposition a string of defeats around the capital over the last year, seizing back control of areas including Daraya and Moadamiya.(Reporting by Tom Perry/Sarah Dadouch and Dmitry Solovyov/Jack Stubbs in Moscow; Editing by Catherine Evans)

Syria says U.S. halting aid to rebels is step toward ending war-[Reuters]-By Dahlia Nehme-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syria views a U.S. decision to halt CIA support to rebel groups fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad as a "start" toward ending the six-year conflict, a government minister told Reuters."All these steps are the start to solving the Syrian crisis, and without that there is no solution," national reconciliation minister Ali Haidar said in an interview. But speaking generally about the conflict, he said what was really needed was for foreign states to completely seal off borders across which arms and fighters have flowed throughout the war, which has killed hundreds of thousands of people."As long as there are areas left like open wounds, there will be no solution," he said, without specifying which areas these were.Haidar also said the government intended to reach more "reconciliation agreements" with insurgents in parts of Syria delineated as "de-escalation zones" under diplomatic efforts led by Russia. His comments reflected the government's satisfaction with U.S. President Donald Trump's decision, announced by U.S. officials last week, to end the CIA program set up in 2013 to equip and train certain vetted rebels. The move marks a further blow to the opposition and a boost for Assad, whose position already appeared militarily unassailable. But Haidar said it was more of a U.S. admission of failure than a genuine policy shift."All the American attempts to fund and arm and train groups it called moderate factions ... have failed."The program overseen by the CIA has funnelled aid to rebels in southern and northern Syria, with support from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Some of these states, notably Qatar and Turkey, are widely believed to have backed some rebels outside the CIA channel.-"DANGEROUS AND WASTEFUL"-Before assuming office in January, Trump suggested he could end support for Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels and give priority to fighting Islamic State. In a tweet on Tuesday, he called the CIA funding to anti-Assad Syrian rebels "massive, dangerous, and wasteful payments". The tweet was reported by the Syrian state news agency and state-run TV.Rebels have said the support always fell far short of what they needed to make a decisive difference in the war with Assad, who received more robust backing from his allies Russia and Iran.Assad's military advantage has helped the government suppress pockets of opposition in western Syria, through local deals in which rebels and civilians are given the choice of evacuating or accepting state rule.Haidar said the government intends to reach more such agreements with rebels. Russia has been working to establish de-escalation zones in the major rebel strongholds of western Syria, notably Idlib province in the northwest and the eastern Ghouta area near Damascus.Moscow and Washington have also brokered a separate ceasefire for southwestern Syria earlier this month."The Syrian government and allied countries are working on many details for the ... de-escalation zones to pave the way for real reconciliations," Haidar said."We will not accept anything less than that."Damascus describes such deals as a "workable model" that brings the country closer to peace. But the opposition decries them as a tactic of forcibly displacing people who oppose Assad after years of bombardment and siege.Haidar denied such allegations and said many people have returned to their hometowns after local deals ended the fighting there.(Writing by Ellen Francis; Editing by Tom Perry and Mark Trevelyan)

Arab states add 18 people, groups to terrorist lists: statement-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-July 25, 2017

DUBAI (Reuters) - Four Arab countries have added 18 more groups and individuals that they say are linked to Qatar to their "terrorist" lists, Saudi state news agency SPA reported on Tuesday, further escalating a row with Doha that has stoked regional tensions. The lists now include three Yemeni charities, three Libyan media outlets, two armed groups and a religious foundation, some of which are already subject to U.S. sanctions."The terrorist activities of the aforementioned entities and individuals have direct and indirect ties with the Qatari authorities," a statement issued by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain said. The four states cut ties with Qatar - a major global gas supplier and host to the biggest U.S. military base in the Middle East - on June 5, accusing it of financing militant groups in Syria, and allying with Iran, their regional foe.The row erupted following remarks attributed to Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, in which he was quoted as praising Gaza's ruling Islamist Hamas movement and calling Iran an "Islamic power" on May 23. Qatar said the emir did not make the remarks and the agency's website had been hacked.Qatar has not yet commented on Tuesday's updated list, but last month it denied the allegations and dismissed charges of support for Islamist militancy, calling them "baseless allegations that hold no foundation in fact".Mediation efforts led by Kuwait and shuttle diplomacy by Western officials, including U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan have failed to end what has become the worst rift between Gulf Arab states in years.Tuesday's statement accused Qatari, Kuwaiti and Yemeni nationals of helping to raise funds for al Qaeda. The statement also said that two Libyan individuals and six groups were suspected of being affiliated with "terrorist groups in Libya".The groups include two television stations, one of which is affiliated with the Qatar-based Al Jazeera television, a militia group based in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi and one of its senior commanders."They have received substantial financial support from the Qatari authorities and played an active role in spreading chaos and devastation in Libya," the statement said.(Reporting by Hadeel Al Sayegh in Dubai and by Ayman Al Warfalli in Benghazi, Editing by Sami Aboudi and; Raya Jalabi)

Immigrants wept, pleaded for water and pounded on the truck-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-July 24, 2017

SAN ANTONIO — The tractor-trailer was pitch-black inside, crammed with maybe 90 immigrants or more, and already hot when it left the Texas border town of Laredo for the 150-mile trip north to San Antonio. It wasn't long before the passengers, sweating profusely in the rising oven-like heat, started crying and pleading for water. Children whimpered. People took turns breathing through a single hole in the wall. They pounded on the sides of the truck and yelled to try to get the driver's attention. Then they began passing out.By the time police showed up at a Walmart in San Antonio around 12:30 a.m. Sunday and looked in the back of the truck, eight passengers were dead and two more would soon die in an immigrant-smuggling attempt gone tragically awry. The details of the journey were recounted Monday by a survivor who spoke to The Associated Press and in a federal criminal complaint against the driver, James Matthew Bradley, who could face the death penalty over the 10 lives lost."After an hour I heard ... people crying and asking for water. I, too, was sweating and people were despairing. That's when I lost consciousness," Adan Lara Vega, 27, told the AP from his hospital bed. By the time he came to, he was in the hospital, where his ID bracelet identified him by the last name Lalravega. Mexican consulate and U.S. officials later told AP the correct spelling was Lara Vega.Bradley, 60, of Clearwater, Florida, appeared in federal court on charges of illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain, resulting in death. He was ordered held for another hearing on Thursday. He did not enter a plea or say anything about what happened. But in court papers, he told authorities he didn't realize anyone was inside his 18-wheeler until he parked and got out to relieve himself. In addition to the dead, nearly 20 others rescued from the rig were hospitalized in dire condition, many suffering from extreme dehydration and heatstroke.Mexico's foreign ministry released a statement Monday night that said "according to preliminary information," 25 of the migrants inside the rig were Mexican.Four of those who died and 21 of those hospitalized are Mexican, the statement said. Some of the others inside the truck were from Guatemala. Many of the immigrants had hired smugglers who brought them across the U.S. border, hid them in safe houses and then put them aboard the tractor-trailer for the ride northward, according to accounts given to investigators."Even though they have the driver in custody, I can guarantee you there's going to be many more people we're looking for to prosecute," said Thomas Homan, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Bradley told investigators that the trailer had been sold and he was transporting it for his boss from Iowa to Brownsville, Texas. After hearing banging and shaking, he opened the door and was "surprised when he was run over by 'Spanish' people and knocked to the ground," according to the criminal complaint. He said he did not call 911, even though he knew at least one passenger was dead.Bradley told authorities that he knew the trailer refrigeration system didn't work and that the four ventilation holes were probably clogged. The truck was registered to Pyle Transportation Inc. of Schaller, Iowa. President Brian Pyle said that he had sold the truck to someone in Mexico and that Bradley was supposed to deliver it to a pick-up point in Brownsville."I'm absolutely sorry it happened. I really am. It's shocking. I'm sorry my name was on it," Pyle said, referring to the truck. He said he had no idea why Bradley took the roundabout route he described to investigators.Bradley told authorities that he had stopped in Laredo — which would have been out of his way if he were travelling directly to Brownsville — to get the truck washed and detailed before heading back 150 miles (240 kilometres ) north to San Antonio. From there, he would have had to drive 275 miles south again to get to Brownsville."I just can't believe it. I'm stunned, shocked. He is too good a person to do anything like this," said Bradley's fiancee, Darnisha Rose of Louisville, Kentucky. "He helps people, he doesn't hurt people."One passenger described a perilous journey that began in Mexico, telling investigators he and others crossed into the U.S. by raft, paying smugglers 12,500 Mexican pesos (about $700), an amount that also bought protection offered by the Zeta drug cartel. They then walked until the next day and rode in a pickup truck to Laredo, where they were put aboard the tractor-trailer to be taken to San Antonio, according to the complaint. The passenger said he was supposed to pay the smugglers $5,500 once he got there.Another passenger told authorities that he was in a group of 24 people who had been in a "stash house" in Laredo for 11 days before being taken to the tractor-trailer.Lara Vega told the AP that he was told by smugglers who hid him and six friends in a safe house in Laredo that they would be riding in an air-conditioned space. The Mexican labourer from the state of Aguascalientes said that when they boarded the truck on a Laredo street Saturday night for the two-hour trip to San Antonio, it was already full of people but so dark he couldn't tell how many.He said he was never offered water and never saw the driver. Lara Vega said that when people are being smuggled, they are told not to look at the faces of their handlers — and it's a good idea to obey.Bradley told authorities that when he arrived in San Antonio, nobody met the tractor-trailer. But one passenger said six black SUVs were waiting to pick up the immigrants and were full in a matter of minutes. And San Antonio police said store surveillance video showed vehicles picking up some of the immigrants.Lara Vega said he was deported from the U.S. three years ago but decided to take another chance because the economy is depressed where he lives with his wife, 4-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son."A person makes decisions without thinking through the consequences," he said, "but, well, thanks to God, here we are."___Associated Press writers Claire Galofaro in Louisville, Kentucky; Ryan Foley in Iowa City, Iowa; Scott McFetridge in Schaller, Iowa; Mike Graczyk in Houston, Elliot Spagat in San Diego; Peter Orsi in Mexico City; and Tammy Webber in Chicago contributed to this report.___This story has been corrected to show the survivor's name is 'Adan Lara Vega' according to records of U.S. and Mexican officials, not 'Adan Lalravega' as it was spelled on a hospital bracelet.___Sign up for the AP's weekly newsletter showcasing our best reporting from the Midwest and Texas at http://apne.ws/2u1RMfv .Frank Bajak And Nomaan Merchant, The Associated Press.

ISRAEL REMOVES METAL DECTORS FROM THE TEMPLE MOUNT.MY QUESTION WHY.

JEWISH KING JESUS IS COMING AT THE RAPTURE FOR US IN THE CLOUDS-DON'T MISS IT FOR THE WORLD.THE BIBLE TAKEN LITERALLY- WHEN THE PLAIN SENSE MAKES GOOD SENSE-SEEK NO OTHER SENSE-LEST YOU END UP IN NONSENSE.GET SAVED NOW- CALL ON JESUS TODAY.THE ONLY SAVIOR OF THE WHOLE EARTH - NO OTHER. 1 COR 15:23-JESUS THE FIRST FRUITS-CHRISTIANS RAPTURED TO JESUS-FIRST FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT-23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.ROMANS 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.(THE PRE-TRIB RAPTURE)

28 And when these things begin to come to pass,(ALL THE PROPHECY SIGNS FROM THE BIBLE) then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption (RAPTURE) draweth nigh.
29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree,(ISRAEL) and all the trees;(ALL INDEPENDENT COUNTRIES)

13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)(THIS IS AN ATOMIC BOMB EFFECT)

EZEKIEL 20:47
47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.

ZEPHANIAH 1:18

Israel begins removal of metal detectors from Temple Mount-Work crews dismantle security measures in place since July 14 attack in which 3 terrorists emerged from holy site to shoot dead two Israeli policemen-By Times of Israel staff and Agencies July 25, 2017, 5:56 am

Israel began the removal process overnight Tuesday the metal detectors installed outside the Temple Mount in Jerusalem in the wake of a terror attack earlier this month at the holy site in which terrorists stashed weapons at the holy site and emerged from it to kill two police officers in a shooting attack right outside the compound. The removal of the metal detectors followed an Israeli security cabinet decision to replace the metal detectors with security measures based on “advanced technologies,” allocating some NIS 100 million over a six-month period for the plan.Work crews could be seen in the early hours of Tuesday removing the metal detectors at one entrance, an AFP journalist reported. Earlier, heavy machinery and workers could be seen heading to the entrance of the site.Muslim officials said all the metal detectors had been dismantled by the dawn hours. Israeli media reported earlier Monday that high-resolution cameras capable of detecting hidden objects would be the alternative. The metal detectors were set up by Israel following a July 14 attack in which three Arab Israeli assailants killed two Israeli Druze officers just outside the Temple Mount, having stashed their weapons at the holy site beforehand and having emerged from it to carry out the attack. In a rare move, Israel briefly shut the site and re-opened it with new security arrangements in place. The implementation of the measures set off daily unrest and clashes between Palestinian rioters and Israeli police in and around East Jerusalem and the West Bank, with the violence coming to a head over the weekend when three Israeli family members were murdered by a Palestinian terrorist who stabbed them to death at their Shabbat table in the West Bank settlement of Halamish on Friday, as others, including children, rushed to hide. The 19-year-old terrorist had written a Facebook post prior to the attack that he would die as a martyr to defend the al-Aqsa mosque.Five Palestinians were killed in clashes between rioters and police on Friday and Saturday. The Prime Minister’s Office said early Tuesday that the security cabinet “accepted the recommendation of all of the security bodies to incorporate security measures based on advanced technologies (‘smart checks’) and other measures instead of metal detectors in order to ensure the security of visitors and worshippers in the Old City and on the Temple Mount.”As word spread of the decision, a few hundred Palestinians gathered to celebrate at Lions Gate, near an entrance to the Temple Mount. One person set off a firework, prompting Israeli police to raid and disperse them using sound grenades. Israeli media reported clashes between the Palestinians and police. The cabinet decision to remove the metal detectors came shortly after Israel and Jordan came to an agreement regarding the safe return of an Israeli security guard injured in a stabbing attack at the Israeli embassy in Amman on Sunday. The incident caused a diplomatic flare-up between the two countries, as the guard killed his attacker and another Jordanian national. Jordanian authorities had initially sought to interrogate the guard over the incident, while Israel refused to hand him over, in what devolved into a tense standoff. As part of intensifying diplomatic efforts, US President Donald Trump’s Mideast envoy, Jason Greenblatt, met with Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday. It was a high-level, on-the-ground attempt by the Trump administration to end the standoff between Israel and the Muslim world. In a statement Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked US President Donald Trump for “directing [senior adviser and son-in-law] Jared Kushner and dispatching Jason Greenblatt to help with our efforts to bring the Israeli embassy staff home quickly. I thank King Abdullah [II] as well for our close cooperation.”The guard and other Israeli embassy staff, including the ambassador, Einat Schlein, crossed from Jordan back into Israel late Monday. In the hours before the embassy staff returned, Netanyahu spoke by phone with the Jordanian monarch who reportedly demanded the removal of the metal detectors at the Temple Mount, which houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, and is administered by a Jordanian-controlled Islamic trust. The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism and is revered as the site of the biblical temples. It is also the third-holiest site in Islam, after Mecca and Medina, and is known to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif. Under an arrangement in place since Israel emerged victorious in the Six Day War in 1967, non-Muslims are allowed access to the site but are forbidden to pray there. Under this status quo, Israel is responsible for security at the site while the Jordanian trust — the Waqf — is in charge of administrative duties.Jordan had been highly critical of the placement of metal detectors at the site, as have the Palestinians who alleged the security measures were a bid by Israel to assert control over the Temple Mount and thus a change to the status quo — a charge Israel has repeatedly denied. The Prime Minister’s Office had earlier denied a Channel 2 report that Amman had demanded the metal detectors be removed as a condition for securing the passage of the Israeli security guard.

UN Security Council meets to debate Temple Mount tensions-Israel ambassador shows reporters photo of bloody scene from Halamish deadly terror attack, blames Palestinian incitement-By Times of Israel staff and AFP July 24, 2017, 8:43 pm

The UN Security Council held closed-door talks on Monday about the recent outbreak of deadly Israeli-Palestinian unrest, as Israel’s ambassador blamed Palestinian incitement for the violence.Egypt, France and Sweden called for the Security Council discussion following clashes over the weekend that left five Palestinians dead and saw a brutal terror attack, in which a Palestinian killed three family members at a Shabbat meal in a West Bank settlement. The Security Council heard a report from UN envoy Nikolay Mladenov during the meeting. The crisis must be resolved by Friday to avoid an escalation of violence, Mladenov said after delivering his briefing.“It is extremely important that a solution to the current crisis be found by Friday this week,” he said. “The dangers on the ground will escalate if we go through another cycle of Friday prayer without a resolution to this current crisis.”“We hope that members of the council will send a clear message to the parties to de-escalate, to exercise restraint, to refrain from provocations, and to work together to lower tensions and discourage violence,” Swedish diplomat Carl Skau said before the meeting.Sweden is among a handful of European countries that recognize a state of Palestine.British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said there was concern at the council about a possible escalation.“It’s important that the Security Council plays our part in calling for calm,” Rycroft told reporters.Last Sunday, Israel placed metal detectors at gates to the Temple Mount in response to a shooting attack by three Arab Israelis who killed two Israeli policemen just outside the compound. They used weapons they had smuggled into the site. Israel introduced additional security equipment at entrances to the holy site overnight Saturday. Before the council met, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon told journalists that Israel is working to calm the situation in Jerusalem, but will do whatever it deems necessary to maintain security at the Temple Mount.“We will enable everybody to come and pray on the Temple Mount, but at the same time we will do whatever is necessary to maintain security,” he said.Danon showed a photograph of the terror attack Friday night in Halamish, in which three members of the Salomon family were murdered.“The Salomon family had gathered for the most joyous occasion, the birth of a new grandson. Instead, the night ended in a massacre,” he said, standing alongside a picture of the bloody floor of the family’s home. “They sat down to eat the Sabbath meal when the terrorist entered their home. He stabbed his victims to death, murdering Yosef, the 70-year-old grandfather, his daughter Haya, and his son Elad, all while the children were hidden in a room.”Danon blamed Palestinian incitement for escalating the situation.“This attack is not an isolated incident. It is part of a wave of terror sweeping the free world by those brainwashed by hateful teachings,” he said. “They are taught that violence and coldblooded murder is holy. The Security Council must demand that [Palestinian Authority President] Mahmoud Abbas and the PA act immediately to end the terror and incitement before the lives of more innocent victims are lost.”

Temple Mount crisis must be resolved by Friday – UN envoy-Nickolay Mladenov urges Security Council members to use their influence with Israel and the Palestinians to restore calm-By AFP and Times of Israel staff July 24, 2017, 11:59 pm

A crisis over new Israeli security measures at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount must be resolved by Friday to avoid an escalation of violence, the UN envoy to the Middle East said Monday.“It is extremely important that a solution to the current crisis be found by Friday this week,” said Nickolay Mladenov after briefing the UN Security Council.“The dangers on the ground will escalate if we go through another cycle of Friday prayer without a resolution to this current crisis,” he warned. The Security Council met behind closed doors to discuss ways to defuse tensions at the Temple Mount, known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary).Last Sunday, Israel placed metal detectors at gates to the Temple Mount in response to a shooting attack by three Arab Israelis who killed two Israeli policemen just outside the compound. They used weapons they had smuggled into the site. Israel introduced additional security equipment at entrances to the holy site overnight Saturday. The Palestinians have denounced the measures as a bid by Israel to assert control over the holy site. Israel strenuously denies this.Since Friday, five Palestinians have been killed and hundreds injured in riots over the new security measures.Late Friday night, a Palestinian terrorist stabbed to death three members of the Salomon family at their Shabbat table in the Halamish West Bank settlement.Egypt, France and Sweden requested the council meeting as US President Donald Trump’s envoy Jason Greenblatt was in Israel and Jordan for talks on easing the situation.Mladenov said he urged council members to use their influence with Israel and the Palestinians to encourage them to deescalate tensions and to preserve access for worshipers.“It is critically important that the status quo is preserved in Jerusalem,” he said. While the violence is taking place “over a couple of hundred square meters… they have the potential to have catastrophic costs well beyond the walls of the Old City, well beyond Israel and Palestine, well beyond the Middle East itself,” he warned. Before the council met, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon told journalists that Israel is working to calm the situation in Jerusalem, but will do whatever it deems necessary to maintain security at the Temple Mount.“We will enable everybody to come and pray on the Temple Mount, but at the same time we will do whatever is necessary to maintain security,” he said.Danon showed a photograph of the terror attack Friday night in Halamish.“The Salomon family had gathered for the most joyous occasion, the birth of a new grandson. The Security Council must demand that [Palestinian Authority President] Mahmoud Abbas and the PA act immediately to end the terror and incitement before the lives of more innocent victims are lost.”Palestinian ambassador Riyad Mansour accused Israel of “putting obstacles in the path of worshipers” and said the council must demand that the metal detectors and cameras be removed “completely and without conditions.”The council will meet again on Tuesday for its regular monthly debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is expected to be dominated by talk of the flareup in violence.

Israeli cabinet decides to remove metal detectors from Temple Mount-Move comes hours after Israel, Jordan end tense stand-off, agree on safe passage of Israeli guard wounded in stabbing incident near Amman embassy that saw him kill his attacker and Jordanian national-By Times of Israel staff July 25, 2017, 2:35 am

Israel ministers overnight Tuesday decided that the metal detectors set up outside the Temple Mount in Jerusalem — in the wake of a terror attack at the holy site in which two Israeli police officers were killed — would be removed, and replaced with security measures based on “advanced technologies.”The Prime Minister’s Office said the security cabinet “accepted the recommendation of all of the security bodies to incorporate security measures based on advanced technologies (‘smart checks’) and other measures instead of metal detectors in order to ensure the security of visitors and worshippers in the Old City and on the Temple Mount.”Israeli media reported earlier Monday that high-resolution cameras capable of detecting hidden objects would be the alternative. The Prime Minister’s Office said the implementation of the plan would take up to six months and that a budget of up to NIS 100 million was allocated for the measures, based on a plan to be presented by the Public Security Ministry. The government said police units would meanwhile be reinforced in and around the site as necessary to ensure security. Earlier Monday Associated Press footage showed heavy machinery and workers heading to the entrance of the site.As word spread of the decision, a few hundred Palestinians gathered to celebrate at Lions Gate, near an entrance to the Temple Mount. One person set off a firework, prompting Israeli police to raid and disperse them using sound grenades. Israeli media reported clashes between the Palestinians and police. The cabinet decision came hours after Israel and Jordan ended a diplomatic stand-off over the return of Israeli embassy staff from Amman following an attack Sunday at a residential building near the mission in which two Jordanian nationals were killed, including an assailant. Another two died in clashes on Saturday.Late on Friday, a Palestinian terrorist stabbed to death three members of the Salomon family at their Shabbat table in the West Bank settlement of Halamish, as others, including children, rushed to hide. Cameras come down along with metal detectors at Temple Mount-Worker dismantle security measures, but leave behind barricades, at holy site where 3 terrorists shot dead 2 Israeli cops on July 14-By Times of Israel staff and Agencies July 25, 2017, 10:01 am

Work crews removed advanced security cameras along with metal detectors installed outside the Temple Mount in Jerusalem overnight Tuesday, in a bid to defuse rampant tensions that have set Jerusalem and the West Bank aflame in recent days. The security measures had been set up last week in the wake of a terror attack at the holy site on July 14 in which terrorists used guns stashed at the compound to kill two police officers standing guard nearby. The removal of the new security measures followed an Israeli security cabinet decision to replace the metal detectors with security measures based on “advanced technologies,” allocating some NIS 100 million over a six-month period for the plan. While reports came out quickly about the metal detectors being taken down overnight, the removal of the much smaller cameras went unnoticed until Tuesday morning. The much more visible metal detectors had formed the focus of protests over the security measures that Muslims said was a violation of the delicate status quo at the holy site; some demonstrations in Jerusalem, the West Bank and elsewhere had seen mockups of metal detectors burned in a sign of anger over the installation of the gateways.Police confirmed that the detectors had been removed, but the spokesperson said she could not yet comment on the cameras. The scaffolding on which the cameras had been installed remained in place on Tuesday morning, only the cameras themselves had been removed.Metal detectors gone. Camera mounted on the metal frame gone. The metal lanes remain. Mother of Halamish terrorist arrested for ‘incitement’-Army says Ibtisam al-Abed expressed support for son who killed three people in settlement stabbing spree Friday night-By Judah Ari Gross July 25, 2017, 9:16 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Israeli soldiers on Tuesday arrested the mother of a Palestinian terrorist who stabbed to death three Israelis in the Halamish settlement last week for suspected “aggravated incitement,” the army said.On Friday, 19-year-old Omar al-Abed broke into the Halamish settlement, near Ramallah. There, he went into the Salomon family home and began a stabbing spree. killing three members of the family, grandfather Yosef, 70, and adult children, Elad, 36, and Chaya, 46. The grandmother, Tova, was also seriously injured.Al-Abed was shot and wounded by an off-duty soldier. He was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment.Following the attack, al-Abed’s mother Ibtisam al-Abed appeared in a video that was widely shared on social media, in which she praised her son for the attack, saying she was “proud of him” and hoped he would be released from custody. On Monday, the family hosted guests and al-Abed’s mother handed out sweets. According to the military, she also “called for attacks on Jews.”The military said these statements constitute incitement to violence. She was arrested in their hometown of Kobar early Tuesday morning, the army said.In an interview with the Haaretz newspaper published Monday, Ibtisam al-Abed is quoted offering support for some of her son’s actions.“It’s not acceptable to me [what he did]. But the whole nation sees courage in his actions, going into an illegal settlement, fenced off and guarded. he didn;t injure children. He sent them away so they wouldn;t get hurt.”According to Michal Salomon, whose husband Elad was killed in the attack, she hid their five children in an upstairs bedroom, while her husband fought off al-Abed until help could arrive.Al-Abed’s father Abd al-Jalil al-Abed also told Haaretz his son’s actions were understandable.“I don’t support it, not the killing of Jews and not the killing of Arabs. But the reason for my son’s action is bigger than anything else: Al-Aqsa, the holy place for all Muslims. Omar saw what was happening, the worshipers who were beaten, stopping the prayer. I blame the occupation,” he said, referring to tensions over the Temple Mount that precipitated the attack. Two other people were arrested in Kobar during the early morning raid, along with 22 Palestinian suspects from across the West Bank. All but four of those suspects were picked up for so-called “popular terrorism,” a catch-all term used by the army to denote low-level activities, like rock throwing and taking part in violent demonstrations. The other four suspects were arrested for allegedly belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization, the army said.

BDS activists prevented from boarding flight to Israel-Jewish Voice for Peace delegation told Israeli government had ordered airline not to let them on board-By JTA July 25, 2017, 3:19 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Five members of an interfaith delegation to Israel were prevented from boarding their flight from Washington, D.C., reportedly due to their activism on behalf of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. The Jewish Voice for Peace organization said in a statement Monday that the delegation tried to check into its Lufthansa flight at Dulles International Airport, only to be told that the Israeli government had ordered the airline not to let the five passengers aboard. In March, the Israeli parliament, or Knesset, amended the Law of Entry to prevent leaders of the BDS movement from being allowed into Israel. The amendment applies to organizations that take consistent and significant action against Israel through BDS, as well as the leadership and senior activists of those groups.Lufthansa spokesman Tal Muscal confirmed that the delegation members were not allowed to fly per the Israeli government’s request. Lufthansa was not made aware of the reason for the order.Muscal said the airline must obey government requests like these to block passengers from boarding flights.“We don’t know who these people are,” Muscal told JTA. “We have no information as to why the Israeli government does not want them to enter. We simply have to abide by the rules and regulations of every country in which we operate.”The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on the incident.Three of the activists were from JVP, including a rabbi. The other two delegation members prevented from boarding the flight were Rick Ufford Chase of the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship in Rockland County, New York, and Shakeel Syed, a national board member with American Muslims for Palestine in Los Angeles. The other 18 participants with the Interfaith Network for Justice in Palestine delegation arrived Monday morning in Israel and were allowed to enter after several hours of detention and questioning, according to JVP.JVP states on its website that it supports boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel.“Israel denied me the ability to travel there because of my work for justice for Palestinians, even though I’m Jewish and a rabbi,” Rabbi Alissa Wise said in the JVP statement. “I’m heartbroken and outraged. This is yet another demonstration that democracy and tolerance in Israel only extends to those who fall in line with its increasingly repressive policies against Palestinians.Syed said in the statement that he had his boarding pass in hand when “the Lufthansa representative informed me that they had a direct order from ‘Israeli immigration authorities’ to not allow us to board the plane. Furthermore, they refused to even show us the Israeli order.”JVP said it is believed to be the first time that the amendment has been enforced before passengers boarded their flights to Israel and the first time that Israel has denied entry to Jews, including a rabbi, for their support of BDS.Following the passage of the Entry Law amendment, several groups that promote BDS planned to organize delegations to come to Israel and test the boundaries of the amendment. An anti-BDS bill making its way through Congress would expand existing law that bans boycotts imposed by foreign governments to include those imposed by international organizations like the European Union and the United Nations.

Yazidi survivor of Islamic State in Knesset: Recognize our genocide-Opposition MK to submit legislation for official recognition of IS atrocities this November, says Foreign Ministry not opposed-By Marissa Newman July 24, 2017, 11:10 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
A Yazidi survivor of Islamic State captivity urged the Knesset on Monday to recognize the terror organization’s crimes against Iraq’s Yazidi minority as a genocide, and an opposition lawmaker pledged to seek official Israeli recognition through Knesset legislation. In a gathering in Israel’s parliament in Jerusalem, UN Goodwill Ambassador Nadia Murad, 24, who was abducted by the Islamic State into sex slavery when jihadis overran northern Iraq in August 2014, somberly appealed to the Jewish state to formally acknowledge the atrocities.“My visit here today is to ask you to recognize the genocide being committed against my people, in light of our peoples’ common history of genocide,” she told the meeting, co-hosted by Zionist Union MK Ksenia Svetlova, who heads the Knesset Lobby for Strengthening Relations between the State of Israel and the Kurdish people; the IsraAID organization; and the Israel office of the Society for International Development (SID).“The Jews and the Yazidis share a common history of genocide that has shaped the identity of our peoples, but we must transform our pain into action. I respect how you rebuilt a global Jewish community in the wake of genocide. This is a journey that lies ahead of my community,” Murad added in Arabic, speaking through an interpreter. In August 2014, two months after sweeping across Iraq’s Sunni heartland, IS jihadists made a second push into an area that had been under Kurdish security control. Thousands of Yazidi men were massacred when the jihadis attacked the town of Sinjar and thousands of women and girls were kidnapped and enslaved. Mass graves have since been unearthed in the region.Yazidi community leaders say up to 3,000 Yazidi women may still be in the hands of the jihadis, across the “caliphate” they proclaimed more than two years ago over parts of Iraq and Syria. The Kurdish-speaking minority is neither Arab nor Muslim and is mostly based around Sinjar Mountain, between the city of Mosul and the Syrian border. It practices its own religion, a unique blend of faiths that is rooted in Zoroastrianism, but borrows from Islam, Christianity and other beliefs. The UN has called the massacres a genocide, arguing that IS had planned them and then intentionally separated men from women to prevent Yazidi children from being born. The United States House of Representatives in March 2016 unanimously passed a motion declaring the mass killings a genocide, followed by the Scottish parliament weeks later, the British House of Commons in April 2016, Canada in October 2016, and the French National Assembly in December of that year.Speaking at the event, held during the last week of the Knesset session, before a three-month break, Zionist Union MK Svetlova said she would bring her bill to recognize the Yazidi genocide to a Knesset vote in November, when the parliament reconvenes. The bill calls on Israel to recognize the massacres as a genocide and mark the event annually on August 3, and recommends the education minister adopt curricula on the atrocities and the prime minister convene an official memorial. As of now, there is only one coalition MK signed on to the bill, Likud MK Yehudah Glick, alongside eight opposition members.Svetlova, however, was optimistic the coalition could be persuaded to support the recognition, which she warned was still in its “very initial stages.”“It’s being discussed right now in the Foreign Ministry,” she told The Times of Israel after the meeting. “In principle, we were told there is no problem with the law. Now, does that mean [the coalition’s] automatic support? It’s very difficult for me to say. I very much hope so. There is no reason for the coalition to oppose something so natural and obvious.”During the meeting, Svetlova argued that Israel has a special obligation for recognition, “as a people, a nation, that experienced a terrible Holocaust.”“‘Never again’ is a call to action. It’s an action that should unify all of humanity who remember the Holocaust,” she told the gathering.“Three years have passed, and we have yet to hear a single official statement from the government of Israel. I think this is a disgrace, and from here I certainly call on our government to open their eyes,” said Svetlova. While the session was attended by opposition leader Isaac Herzog and Zionist Union MK Stav Shaffir, no coalition members were among the audience, after deputy minister Michael Oren, who was slated to speak, could not attend.Though a UN goodwill ambassador for the dignity of survivors of human trafficking, Murad, the Yazidi woman, castigated the United Nations for its unwillingness to pursue war crimes charges against the Islamic State.“Despite various independent reports that have found evidence of an ongoing genocide, and despite repeatedly asking the United Nations to hold ISIS perpetrators accountable, the global community has not responded,” she said, using a common acronym for the Islamic State. “The UN has not taken any action to establish a mechanism to prosecute ISIS for their crimes.”In April 2015, the International Criminal Court ruled out prosecuting the Islamic State, as neither Iraq nor Syria were parties of the Rome Statute that gives the body jurisdiction over those countries. In her address, Murad referred briefly to the siege of Sinjar, which left her mother and six of her brothers dead.“They surrounded more than 200,000 fleeing Yazidis on Mount Sinjar, without food, water or shelter. Many of my people perished on the mountain,” she said.“They also systematically abducted thousands of women and children including myself. Women and girls were enslaved, trafficked, and forcibly converted. Boys were indoctrinated with ISIS ideology and trained as fighters. Despite some areas having been liberated from ISIS, the genocide continues today.”Murad, who now lives in Germany, managed to flee and has since engaged in advocacy work for her people. In 2016, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.“We Yazidis are a peaceful people,” she said. “Never in our 5,000-year history have we fought and killed others. But our peacefulness has not served us well. We have faced 74 pogroms, often motivated by extreme interpretations of Islam. And I’m afraid this genocide, the one that continues today, will be completed if we are not able to return to our homeland.”AFP contributed to this report.

13  And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,
