UN head: Israel-Turkey deal a ‘hopeful signal for regional stability’-Ban Ki-moon praises rapprochement as local politicians reluctantly back agreement-By Raoul Wootliff June 27, 2016, 4:41 pm-the times of israel

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday welcomed a deal between Israel and Turkey to normalize relations after years of acrimony, calling it a “hopeful signal for the stability of the region.”“I welcome today’s announcement of the normalization of relations between Israel and Turkey,” Ban told journalists as he met President Reuven Rivlin during a visit to Israel. The statements echoed those of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said the deal would help bring “stability” to the turbulent Middle East. His Turkish counterpart, Binali Yildirim, made a simultaneous announcement in Ankara. The deal will restore full diplomatic relations between Jerusalem and Ankara in return for Turkish commitments to tackle terrorism and remove opposition to Israel in international forums and and Israeli promises to allow Turkish aid into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.Once tight, already frayed relations between Israel and Turkey were significantly downgraded in 2010 after Israeli commandos staged a raid on a six-ship Turkish flotilla which was trying to breach Israel’s naval blockade of the Strip. The commandos were violently attacked by those on board the Turkish-flagged Mavi Marmara, and nine Turkish citizens, including one with American citizenship, were killed in the ensuing melee. A tenth died of his wounds years later. A number of Israeli soldiers were injured in the raid.Under the deal Israel will also pay $20 million (18.14 million euros) in compensation for the deaths caused in the commando raid, Yildirim confirmed. In return for the compensation, Turkey agreed not to take legal action against IDF soldiers involved in the incident.Criticizing Netanyahu for agreeing to compensation, opposition leader Isaac Herzog said the deal was “important,” but hedged his praise by saying Ankara “is the ally of Hamas.”“Like in the [Gilad] Shalit incident and in Operation Protective Edge, Netanyahu is weak against Hamas because over the years he’s given in to the political threats of [Yisrael Beytenu party leader Avigdor] Liberman and has been dragged along unnecessarily at the expense of Israeli citizens’ security interests,” he said. However, Zionist Union number two Tzipi Livni said she had to admit that she would have signed the same agreement if she had been in the government.Yesh Atid party leader Yair Lapid said the deal with Turkey was “difficult to swallow, but states make agreements such as these.”“There’s what we all feel and there’s the security and national interest, and they take precedence,” he said at a party meeting in the Knesset. In recent weeks the families of two soldiers whose bodies are believed to held by Hamas, and two Israelis thought to be in the captivity of the terrorist group, have campaigned for their return to be part of the deal. While no such guarantee was part of the agreement, Netanyahu said that Turkey has promised to help return the soldiers and captives from Gaza.He said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had personally sent a letter pledging to do all he could on the matter.Avraham Abera Mengistu, 29, a Jew of Ethiopian descent, has been held by Hamas for nearly two years. According to his family, he suffers from a mental illness and stumbled across the border into the coastal territory by accident in 2014.A second Israeli man, a resident of a Bedouin community in the Negev, is also thought to be held by Hamas in Gaza. His name has not been released for publication. He, too, apparently crossed the border of his own volition, and has been described as mentally disabled.Lt. Hadar Goldin and Sgt. Oron Shaul were killed in separate incidents during Israel’s military offensive against Hamas in the summer of 2014. Though neither body was recovered, the army has classified both soldiers as “killed in action” based on forensic evidence. Hamas has claimed to be holding the remains of the two.Reacting to Netanyahu’s announcement of the deal, Goldin’s family said in a statement that it “abandons Lt. Hadar Goldin and Sgt. Oron Shaul and doesn’t include the return of their bodies from Hamas captivity.”“The prime minister’s declarations were hollow. He acted contrary to his promises to us,” the family, calling the accord “a bad and problematic deal.”Responding to inquiries by Channel 10 whether Turkey will secure the return of the remains of Israeli soldiers killed in 2014 and held by Hamas in Gaza, Turkish Prime Minister Yildirim said Ankara “will decide according to the advancement of relations how to act going forward.”Speaking from Rome, Netanyahu said the agreement would secure the “continuation of the maritime security blockade off the Gaza Strip coast.”“This is a supreme security interest for us. I was not prepared to compromise on it,” he added. Israel says the blockade is necessary to keep out material that could be used for military purposes in the Strip, which is run by the terror group Hamas.Netanyahu’s former National Security Council Maj. Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror said the normalization would have “very little” impact on Israel’s security arrangements in Gaza in the short term.“In the future, it depends,” Amidror told reporters in the hours following the announcement of the agreement. “But the potential is huge.”While Hamas maintains its overseas headquarters in Turkey and has ideological ties with Erdogan, the former head of Military Intelligence doubted this deal would change the terrorist organization’s opinion of Israel.“I don’t see the Turks having a lot of influence over the military wing of Hamas in Gaza,” Amidror said.

deal-Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman says he’ll oppose the Israel-Turkey detente deal in the cabinet.“Compensation has bad consequences,” Channel 2 quotes him saying. “I won’t make a campaign of it as I did against the Shalit deal, but my stance is known.”16:39-PA welcomes Israel-Turkey rapprochement deal ‘in principle’-Palestinian Authority Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad al-Maliki says Ramallah welcomes the agreement between Turkey and Israel “in principle,” but he asks Ankara to work with Ramallah on matters concerning the Palestinians.Speaking to the Palestinian Ma’an news agency, al-Maliki says the PA wouldn’t interfere with the terms of the agreement between Israel and Turkey, but says the aspects of the deal relating to the Palestinians “were of core interest to the Palestinian leadership” and Ramallah should have been kept in the loop. While Ramallah welcomes Turkey’s plans to build a desalinization plant in Gaza, Maliki says the PA is already building a €400 million plant in Gaza sponsored by the European Union.“If Turkey wants to help,” Maliki says, “it should all be part of the national plan for the development of all the Palestinian territories, and it must be done through full coordination with the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian government.”— Dov Lieber-16:27-Erdogan’s office confirms Russia apology-Turkish presidential sources confirm saying that while many people feel hurt by the deal, “it’s for the sake of Israel’s interests.”Yesh Atid party leader Yair Lapid says the deal with Turkey is “difficult to swallow, but states make Hey amigo: Mexico president in Canada for state visit, Trudeau-Obama summit-[The Canadian Press]-Bruce Cheadle, The Canadian Press-June 27, 2016-yahoonews

OTTAWA - Mexico's president is in Canada for three days of carefully choreographed North American leader summitry.Enrique Pena Nieto, who arrived in Canada late Sunday, is beginning his day in Quebec City before dining with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Toronto and then hitting the national capital on Tuesday for an official state visit. The Mexican president will then join Trudeau and U.S. President Barack Obama for Wednesday's North American Leaders' Summit in Ottawa, commonly known as the Three Amigos.Last year's trilateral summit was cancelled amid the Canada-U.S. dispute over the Keystone XL oil pipeline, and an ongoing Canada-Mexico fight over visa requirements.Keystone XL has since been formally rejected by the Obama administration, while Canada's visa requirement for visiting Mexicans remains an irritant that sources say won't likely be fully resolved this week. However Trudeau and Pena Nieto will be looking for a public display of Canada-Mexico co-operation — likely centring on climate action — as a counterpoint to the trade protectionism and anti-immigrant sentiment that has marked this year's U.S. presidential race.Experts say it will be in Obama's interest, as well, to broaden the North American relationship in hopes off cementing his environmental policy legacy and insulating the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as NAFTA, from political mischief.Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has advocated tough new immigration policies, border defences and possible new trade barriers while the Democrat's Hillary Clinton is expressing reservations about the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact.Britain's shocking referendum vote Thursday to remove the country from the 28-member European Union has rocked international markets and destabilized Europe, providing a sharp international contrast to this week's expected North American love-in."We are looking to align ourselves, the three partners in NAFTA, as closely as possible to demonstrate that in North America we understand how creating growth that benefits our citizens and protecting the environment for future generations are not opposite goals but are very much complementary in the 21st century," Trudeau said at an Ottawa news conference last week before the Brexit vote.Trudeau's environment minister, Catherine McKenna, made it explicit on the weekend when she told CTV that the Three Amigos summit, set against the Brexit backdrop, sends "a great message to the world that we're working together."Trudeau and Obama have already established a warm personal relationship that appears to transcend the usual Canada-U.S. niceties, but the American president is entering the final half year of his administration and may be looking to lock in some of his policy gains, particularly on the environmental front. In March, during Trudeau's state visit to Washington, Canada and the United States agreed to cut methane emissions 40 to 45 per cent below 2012 levels by 2025.Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas — about 84 times more potent over a 20-year timeframe than carbon dioxide, according to the Pembina Institute — and also among the cheapest ways to cut GHGs, since methane is a marketable byproduct of oil and gas production and storage.Getting Mexico into a common North American methane reduction agreement would help anchor March's bilateral deal and be good for the environment.According to McKenna, it may also be close to a done deal."I can't let the cat out of the bag, we're still working hard with the Mexicans and Americans, but I think there's a real opportunity to see some progress there," she told CTV.After Pena Nieto's departure on Wednesday afternoon, Obama will become the first U.S. president in 21 years to address the joint houses of Parliament with a speech in the House of Commons.— Follow @BCheadle on Twitter

SINS OF PEOPLE

ISAIAH 5:20-25
20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:
23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
25 Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous (DANGEROUS) times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

1 TIMOTHY 1:9
9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

Duterte ready to clash with Catholic church on birth control-[The Canadian Press]-The Associated Press-June 27, 2016-YAHOONEWS

DAVAO, Philippines - The Philippine president-elect said Monday he would aggressively promote artificial birth control in the country even at the risk of getting in a fight with the dominant Catholic church, which staunchly opposes the use of contraceptives.Rodrigo Duterte, who is to be sworn to the presidency on Thursday, said having many children has driven families deeper into poverty, and he reiterated his recommendation for Filipinos to have three at most.Known for his profanity-laden speeches, Duterte jokingly threatened to have penises of defiant men chopped off and cited his family planning program as a longtime mayor in southern Davao city, where he has offered cash rewards to villagers who volunteer to undergo free vasectomy or ligation and to doctors who perform the procedures."I will reinstall the program of family planning. Three's enough," Duterte said in a speech after a flag-raising ceremony in front of the Davao city hall. "I've also been colliding with the church because it's no longer realistic."It was not clear if Duterte would replicate the reward system nationwide.Duterte praised former President Fidel Ramos, who backed his presidential candidacy, for courageously promoting contraceptives as the country's first Protestant leader starting in 1992.Duterte's predecessor, Benigno Aquino III, also figured in a high-profile spat with the Catholic church for signing a 2012 reproductive health law that allowed the government to finance the acquisition and distribution of contraceptives after overcoming a legal challenge by opponents. Many politicians have tried to avoid colliding with influential Catholic bishops in the Philippines in the past by taking a vague position or not aggressively advocating contraceptives use.Catholic leaders considered the law an attack on the church's core values. Aquino's government said it helped the poor manage their number of children in a country that has one of Asia's fastest-growing populations.Duterte has had an adversarial relation with the church. During the campaign, Duterte had a tiff with Catholic bishops after cursing Pope Francis due to a monstrous traffic jam during the papal visit in January last year.Last month, Duterte blasted the local Catholic church as "the most hypocritical institution" and accused some of its bishops of asking for favours from politicians.

Supreme Court strikes down restrictive Texas abortion law-[By Lawrence Hurley]-June 27, 2016-YAHOONEWS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday handed a victory to abortion rights advocates, striking down a Texas law imposing strict regulations on abortion doctors and facilities that its critics contended were specifically designed to shut down clinics. The 5-3 ruling held that the Republican-backed 2013 law placed an undue burden on women exercising their constitutional right to end a pregnancy established in the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. The normally nine-justice court was one member short after the Feb. 13 death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, who consistently opposed abortion in past rulings.Conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy joined liberal members of the court in ruling that both key provisions of the law violate a woman’s constitutional right to obtain an abortion.Liberal Justice Stephen Breyer, writing for the court, said that the appeals court that upheld the law was wrong in its approach, noting that courts are required to “consider the burdens a law imposes on abortion access together with the benefits that those laws confer.”Deferring to state legislatures over “questions of medical uncertainty is also inconsistent with this court’s case law,” Breyer added.Three conservative justices - Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito - dissented.By setting a nationwide legal precedent that the two provisions in the Texas law were unconstitutional, the ruling imperils laws already in place in other states.Texas had said its law, passed by a Republican-led legislature and signed by a Republican governor in 2013, was aimed at protecting women’s health. The abortion providers had said the regulations were medically unnecessary and intended to shut down clinics. Since the law was passed, the number of abortion clinics in Texas, the second-most-populous U.S. state with about 27 million people, has dropped from 41 to 19.Democratic President Barack Obama’s administration supported the challenge brought by the abortion providers. The Texas law required abortion doctors to have “admitting privileges,” a type of formal affiliation that can be hard to obtain, at a hospital within 30 miles (48 km) of the clinic so they can treat patients needing surgery or other critical care. The law also required clinic buildings to possess costly, hospital-grade facilities. These regulations covered numerous building features such as corridor width, the swinging motion of doors, floor tiles, parking spaces, elevator size, ventilation, electrical wiring, plumbing, floor tiling and even the angle that water flows from drinking fountains.-‘SUBSTANTIAL OBSTACLE’-“We conclude that neither of these provisions offers medical benefits sufficient to justify the burdens upon access that each imposes,” Breyer wrote in the ruling. “Each places a substantial obstacle in the path of women seeking a pre-viability abortion, each constitutes an undue burden on abortion access, and each violates the federal Constitution.”Alito said in his dissenting opinion that the court should have upheld the law on a legal technicality. He criticized the majority, saying that in striking down the law, the court “simply disregards basic rules that apply in all other cases.”The last time the justices decided a major abortion case was nine years ago when they ruled 5-4 to uphold a federal law banning a late-term abortion procedure.Abortion rights supporters hailed the ruling.Amy Hagstrom Miller, founder and CEO of Whole Woman’s Health, which led the challenge to the Texas law, said, “Every day Whole Woman’s Health treats our patients with compassion, respect and dignity - and today the Supreme Court did the same. We’re thrilled that today justice was served and our clinics stay open.”Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Twitter called the ruling “a victory for women in Texas and across America.”-“This fight isn’t over: The next president has to protect women’s health. Women won’t be 'punished’ for exercising their basic rights,” she said, a dig at presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who once suggested women who get illegal abortions should face “some sort of punishment.” The presidential election is Nov. 8.Abortion opponents denounced the ruling. “It’s exceedingly unfortunate that the court has taken the ability to protect women’s health out of the hands of Texas citizens and their duly-elected representatives,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, said in a statement.Republican Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick added that abortion clinics are now “free to ignore these basic safety standards and continue practicing under substandard conditions. By its ruling, the court held that the ability of abortion clinics to remain open – even under substandard conditions –outweighs the state’s ability to put women’s health and safety first.”Some U.S. states have pursued a variety of restrictions on abortion, including banning certain types of procedures, prohibiting it after a certain number of weeks of gestation, requiring parental permission for girls until a certain age, imposing waiting periods or mandatory counseling, and others.Americans remain closely divided over whether abortion should be legal. In a Reuters/Ipso online poll involving 6,769 U.S. adults conducted from June 3 to June 22, 47 percent of respondents said abortion generally should be legal and 42 percent said it generally should be illegal.Views on abortion in the United States have changed very little over the decades, according to historical polling data.(Reporting by Lawrence Hurley; Additional reporting by Adfam DeRose, Jon Herskovitz and David Ingram; Editing by Will Dunham)

Paris prosecutor opens manslaughter probe into crashed EgyptAir jet-[Reuters]-June 27, 2016-YAHOONEWS

PARIS/CAIRO (Reuters) - The Paris prosecutor's office on Monday opened a manslaughter investigation into the crash of EgyptAir flight MS804, as the doomed jet's black box memory chips were sent to France for repair. The Airbus went down in the eastern Mediterranean Sea en route from Paris to Cairo on May 19 and all 66 people on board were killed. The cause of the crash remains unknown."The Paris prosecutor has opened today a full investigation into involuntary homicide," the prosecutor's office told Reuters in a text message. The prosecutor said it was not looking into terrorism as a possible cause of the crash at this stage.Damaged memory chips from the black boxes were flown to France on Monday after Egyptian investigators had tried without success to repair them, an investigation committee statement said. The chips should allow investigators to begin transcribing and analyzing the recordings and data which may hold key insights into what caused the crash.A lab belonging to France's BEA air accident investigation agency will try to remove sea salt deposits from the chips before returning them to Cairo for analysis. The plane is believed to have crashed in the deepest part of the Mediterranean and the black boxes, recovered last week, were badly damaged. On Monday debris from the jet was brought to Cairo airport, where investigators will try to reassemble part of the plane's frame in search of additional clues that may help explain the crash, a source on the investigation committee said.(Reporting by Chine Labbe and Eric Knecht; editing by Andrew Roche)

IS claims killing of five citizen journalists in Syria-[AFP]-June 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Beirut (AFP) - The Islamic State group Sunday published a video showing the execution-style killing of five Syrian citizen journalists they kidnapped eight months ago in the east of the war-torn country. The victims seen in the footage -- which was posted on the blog of the group's Al-Bayan radio -- were all from the city of Deir Ezzor, 60 percent of which is controlled by IS.A Britain-based monitor that works with sources inside Syria to collect information on the five-year conflict said it recognised one of the victims as a citizen journalist it had worked with. The activists were kidnapped in Deir Ezzor in October and killed between November and December, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights."The video was only published now because IS -- who are losing ground in Syria -- want to send a message that they are still strong," Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said. The jihadist group has come under pressure in Syria, where a US-backed Kurdish-Arab alliance is pressing an offensive to retake its bastion of Manbij near the Turkish border.IS has previously claimed the killing of several citizen journalists working secretly in areas it controls in Syria -- including the group's stronghold of Raqa -- and accused them of being spies. It has also claimed to have killed activists in Turkey.Last October, the decapitated bodies of two activists originally from Raqa were found in the Turkish city of Sanliurfa, 55 kilometres (35 miles) from the Syrian border. In late December, Syrian anti-IS filmmaker Naji Jerf was killed in the Turkish city of Gaziantep. And in April, Syrian journalist Mohammed Zaher al-Shurqat died in hospital after he was shot in the head by IS jihadists in the same city.

Kremlin says Turkey apologized for shooting down Russian jet-[Reuters]-By Jack Stubbs and Dmitry Solovyov-June 27, 2016-YAHOONEWS

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has apologized to Russian leader Vladimir Putin over last year's shooting down of a Russian air force jet by Turkey's military, the Kremlin said on Monday, opening the way for Russia to lift economic sanctions. The Russian jet was shot down, with the loss of the pilot, in November while it took part in the Kremlin's military campaign in Syria. Ankara said it acted lawfully because the plane had crossed into Turkish air space; Moscow denied that happened."I want to once again express my sympathy and deep condolences to the family of the Russian pilot who died and I say: 'I'm sorry,'" the Kremlin, in a statement, cited Erdogan as saying in the letter.A spokesman for Erdogan, Ibrahim Kalin, confirmed the letter was sent to Putin, though he did not refer explicitly to an apology. He said that Erdogan, in the letter, had expressed regret and asked the family of the pilot to "excuse us."The Kremlin responded to the downing of the plane by slapping trade restrictions on Ankara -- including freezing work on a pipeline to ship Russian gas to Europe via Turkey, and advising Russian tourists to avoid Turkish resorts.Putin had said those measures would only be lifted if Erdogan personally issued an apology. There was no word from the Russian authorities on Monday on ending the sanctions. If the dispute is now on the way to being resolved, that could ease some of the diplomatic tensions around the Syria conflict. Moscow supports Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad while Ankara backs rebels who are trying to oust him.In its statement, the Kremlin said Putin had received a letter from Erdogan "in which the Turkish leader expressed his desire to resolve the situation connected to the downing of a Russian military aircraft"."The letter states, in particular, that Russia is a friend to Turkey and a strategic partner, with which the Turkish authorities would not wish to spoil relations," the Kremlin statement said.Turkey's efforts to mend damaged ties come as the Middle East is polarized by Syria's civil war, the rise of Islamic State threatens regional security, and as its relations with Europe and the United States are strained.-MORE FRIENDS-The Kremlin statement said Erdogan had expressed his readiness to do everything necessary to restore the traditionally friendly relations between Turkey and Russia, and also to jointly fight terrorism. After the Kremlin revealed the existence of Erdogan's letter, the Turkish lira firmed to 2.9330 against the U.S. dollar from 2.9430 beforehand. It later lost some of the gains to trade at 2.9385 at 1448 GMT.The Kremlin's announcement came hours after Turkey and Israel said they would normalize ties after a six-year rupture, a rare rapprochement in the divided Middle East.Days after taking office last month, Turkey's new Prime Minister Binali Yildirim - a close Erdogan ally - said Turkey needed to "increase its friends and decrease its enemies", in what appeared a tacit admission that his predecessor's policies had left the NATO member sidelined.Under former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Ankara was insistent on Assad's departure as the only way of stabilising Syria, setting it at odds with Moscow.Turkey's worst nightmare in Syria has meanwhile come true: Russian support has enabled Assad to remain in power, while Kurdish militia fighters have benefited from U.S. support as they battle Islamic State, bolstering their position in territory adjacent to the Turkish border.(Additional reporting by Nicholas Tattersall in ISTANBUL; Writing by Christian Lowe; Editing by Philippa Fletcher)

Iraqi army closes in on Islamic State militants near Falluja-[Reuters]-By Thaier al-Sudani and Ahmed Rasheed-June 27, 2016-YAHOONEWS

FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq's army sought on Monday to eliminate Islamic State fighters holed up in farmland west of Falluja to keep them from launching a counterattack on the city, a day after the government declared victory over the militants there.Backed by air strikes from a U.S.-led coalition, Iraqi artillery bombarded targets as troops closed in on up to 150 insurgents in areas along the southern bank of the Euphrates river, an army officer participating in the operation said. The government's recapture of Falluja, an hour's drive west of the capital, was part of a broader offensive against Islamic State, which seized large swathes of Iraq's north and west in 2014 but is now being driven back by an array of forces.Falluja's recovery lent fresh momentum to the campaign to recapture Mosul, Iraq's second largest city and the biggest anywhere in the jihadists' self-proclaimed caliphate. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has pledged to retake Mosul this year.Colonel Ahmed al-Saidi, who participated in Monday's advance, said ground forces were moving cautiously to avoid triggering roadside bombs planted by Islamic State. The holed-up militants "have two options: either they surrender or they get killed. We want to prevent them catching their breath and attacking our forces with car bombs," he said.Saidi said radio intercepts suggested the militants were running out of ammunition and he expected them to fold shortly. The insurgents mounted limited resistance to Iraqi forces earlier this month inside Falluja before scattering after some commanders abandoned the fight, according to Iraqi officials. The military's swift advance surprised many who anticipated a protracted battle for Falluja, a bastion of Sunni Muslim insurgency where some of the fiercest fighting of the U.S. occupation of Iraq took place in 2004 against Islamic State's forerunner, al Qaeda.-ASSESSING THE DAMAGE-Control of Falluja is now shared between the army, elite counter-terrorism forces and federal police. Some fighters from Shi'ite Muslim militias, which have held several outlying areas for months, are also present inside Falluja proper. The army, along with local police, are expected to take full control in the coming days, a military source said.Central districts of Falluja, which in January 2014 became the first Iraqi city to fall to Islamic State, were mostly quiet on Monday as bomb-removal operations along roadways and in buildings began in earnest.Military sources said the city had been heavily mined by Islamic State but the extent of damage to infrastructure and property could not be assessed easily.Dozens of buildings across the city have been set on fire, something government forces blamed mostly on fleeing militants. At least one building, a converted prison in Nazal district, was torched after Islamic State was pushed out.In video published a week ago showing the cages where the militants had allegedly detained Iraqi security officials, the building appeared fully intact. When a Reuters team visited the same site on Monday, soot covered the floor and most rooms were stained black from smoke.A spokesman for Iraq's federal police acknowledged the arson, but said his forces no longer controlled the area. He suggested the destruction was carried out by residents angry about their missing relatives, though most civilians had fled the city by the time the prison was discovered. Some officials estimate that as little as 10 percent of Falluja had been destroyed, comparing that favourably with Ramadi and Sinjar, cities recaptured from Islamic State last year but widely devastated in the process.A spokesman for the governor of Anbar province, where Falluja is located, said the worst damage had occurred in the southern industrial district where Islamic State had assembled car bombs used in attacks in Baghdad.More than 85,000 residents displaced by the fighting in the past month are waiting in government-run camps to return home; at least twice as many people fled Falluja during IS rule. The World Food Programme on Monday expressed alarm at "the extremely dire conditions" of civilians who have overwhelmed the capacity of aid groups.(Additional reporting and writing by Stephen Kalin; Editing by Mark Trevelyan)

Flood-weary West Virginia braces for more rain as relief efforts underway-[Christian Science Monitor]-Ben Rosen-June 27, 2016-YAHOONEWS

Just as West Virginia starts to recover from the worst flooding there in more than a century, more heavy rain is in the forecast.More than 20 counties were under flood watch Monday, including the three most devastated by rain – Kanawha, Nicholas, and Greenbrier counties. In Greenbrier, at least 17 people have died, and floodwaters have not receded. The amount of rainfall is not expected to near the total Thursday. But enough rain could cause additional flash flooding in areas already impacted by the historic floods, according to The Weather Channel.Though the torrential rains will likely slow any recovery, a framework is in place to assist West Virginians regain their normal lives, as President Obama designated a federal disaster area there on Saturday, ordering federal aid to residents of Kanawha, Greenbrier, and Nicholas counties that could include grants for temporary housing and repairs. But residents also emphasize the importance of being there for each other.Take TJ Parker, of Rainelle, W.Va. Mr. Parker rescued an elderly man who called for help, as Parker and his dog, Titan, swam four blocks to safety. Parker says he was forced to hold his breath underwater to support the elderly man.“I realize that sounds crazy, but you have to do what you have to do at that time,” Parker told the Associated Press.Up to 10 inches of rain brought on flooding Thursday, with parts of the state receiving 1 to 3 inches in hours. West Virginia received one-quarter of its annual rainfall in one day, and numerous rivers surged to dangerous levels, including Elk River, whose levels broke a record at one stage that had stood since 1888.The rains across the mountainous state sent torrents of water from rivers and streams through homes and whole towns, with some completely surrounded by water. Hundreds of homes and buildings across the state have been lost or destroyed.Since Thursday, 25 people have died, the highest in any state from flooding this year.Hundreds of people have been rescued, said Tim Rock, spokesman for the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.Although Monday’s rains will likely inflict more damage, the disaster is already drawing comparisons to the flooding there in November 1985, the state’s most expensive natural disaster. It caused $570 million in damage, with more than 3,500 homes, 180 businesses, and 43 bridges destroyed. Twenty-nine counties were declared federal disaster areas."This is the worst I've ever seen," Fayette County Sheriff's Sgt. Bill Mooney, who served in the National Guard during massive floods in 2000-01, told the Associated Press. "Nobody expected 7 inches of (rain) in three hours."Mr. Obama's declaration of the federal disaster is expected to provide some relief. Residents in the three worst hit counties can receive aid for temporary housing and home repairs, receive low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and qualify for other assistance for individuals and business owners. Federal money is also available for state and local governments is also available on a cost-sharing basis. This report contains material from the Associated Press.

24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings(10 NATIONS-10 WORLD DIVISION WORLD GOVERNMENT) that shall arise: and another shall rise after them;(#11 SPAIN) and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.(EITHER THE EUROPEAN UNION DICTATOR BOOTS 3 ORIGINAL COUNTRIES FROM THE 6 FOUNDING MEMBERS OR THE DICTATOR TAKES OVER THE WORLD ECONOMY BY CONTROLLING 3 WORLD TRADE BLOCS)

UPDATE-JUNE 27,2016-12:00AM
IF DAN 7:8,24 HAD A DUAL MEANING - MEANING THE FIRST EU 13 MEMBERS. THEN HOW THE EU THEN PUTS THE WHOLE WORLD INTO 10 TRADE BLOCS-AND THEY TAKE WORLD ECONOMIC, RELIGIOUS AND GOVERNMENTAL CONTROL. IF THIS VERSE WOULD MEAN 13 EU NATIONS. THEN AFTER THE EU WOULD HIT 10 NATIONS. THEN #11 SPAIN IN THE EU WOULD BE ELECTED LEADER. AND WOULD BOOT OUT 3  COUNTRIES FROM THE ORIGINAL 6 FOUNDING MEMBERS. WHICH MEANS THERE WOULD HAVE TO BE 13 COUNTRIES IN THE EU. WHEN SPAIN WOULD BOOT 3 COUNTRIES FROM THE EU. AND THE SPANISH LEADER WOULD BECOME THE WORLD DICTATOR. WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY THE WORLD DICTATOR WILL BE-A KING OF LOOKING FiERCE. SO THE WORLD DICTATOR HAS TO BE A KING. AND SPAIN USES A KING SYSTEM (MONARCHY). AND ALSO THE KING OF SPAIN HAS THE TITLE KING OF JERUSALEM ALSO. AND THIS FUTURE EU DICTATOR SIGNS A 7 YR PEACE TREATY WITH ISRAEL-ARABS AND MANY (PROBABLY THE ARAB LEAGUE IS THE MANY). SO AT SOME TIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE. A SPANISH LEADER COULD BECOME THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN UNION. HE WOULD KICK OUT 3 OF THE ORIGINAL FOUNDING 6 MEMBERS FROM THE 1958 COUNTRIES. AND HE WOULD BECOME THE LEADER OF THE 10 NOW LEADING COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION. AND IF THERE WAS MORE THEN 13 COUNTRIES IN THE EU. ANY COUNTRIES AFTER THE 10 LEADING WOULD BE CLASSIFIED AS ASSOCIATE MEMBER STATES. THEY WOULD HAVE ALL THE ADVANTAGES OF THE EU. BUT WOULD NOT HAVE A SAY IN THE LAWS OR RULES OF THE EU. ONLY THE MAIN CORE OF 10 NATIONS MAKE ALL THE FINAL DECISIONS FOR THE WHOLE TRADE BLOC OF EUROPE. ITS NO ACCIDENT THAT I AM TALKING ABOUT SPAIN AS THE EU LEADER. WHEN JUST TODAY IN SPAIN-JUNE 26,16-THEY ARE HAVING THEIR ELECTIONS. DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THIS IS AN ACCIDENT. JUST AFTER THE UK VOTED THURSDAY NIGHT JUNE 23,16 TO LEAVE THE EU. THEN JUST 3 DAYS LATER SPAIN HAS ITS ELECTION TO DECIDE THEIR NEW LEADER. BUT SPEAKING OF DANIEL 7:8 SAYING THAT 3 OF THE ORIGINAL GET THE BOOT. HERE IS ANOTHER INTERESTING FACT GOING ON RIGHT NOW. ITALY AND FRANCE 2 OF THE ORIGINAL 6 FOUNDING MEMBERS ARE TALKING ABOUT HAVING A REFERENDUM-TO SEE IF THEY CAN LEAVE THE EU ALSO. AND NOT ONLY THAT BUT THE EU HAS NOW PUT A BELGIAN LEADER IN TO NEGOTIATE THE TERMS OF THE EU TREATIES CONTRACTS WITH THE UNITED KINGDOM. TO GET BRITAIN OUT OF THE EU. BELGIUM IS ALSO ONE OF THE ORIGINAL 6 FOUNDING MEMBERS. AND BELGIUM ALSO HAS A MONARCHY SYSTEM. SO MAYBE A SPANISH LEADER WILL BE NAMED PRESIDENT OF THE EU AND THE BELGIAN LEADER WILL MAKE SURE THE SPANISH LEADER DOES GET ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE EU. IN ORDER FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. THE 3 MOST POWERFUL OF THE 6 FOUNDING MEMBERS WOULD HAVE TO BE BOOTED OUT. THIS WOULD MEAN THAT GERMANY-FRANCE AND ITALY WOULD BE THE 3 FOUNDING MEMBERS TO GET THE BOOT. AND SPAIN-BELGIUM-NETHERLANDS AND LUXUMBOURG WHICH ARE ALL KING SYSTEMS OR MONARCHIES.WOULD HAVE FULL CONTROL OF THE EU. AND THESE 4 PLUS THE OTHER 6 MAIN 10 EU CORE COUNTRIES. WOULD PUT THE SPANISH LEADER IN AS THE EU PRESIDENT. AND HE WOULD BECOME THE WORLD LEADER AFTER HE UPROOTS 3 WORLD TRADE BLOCS OF THE 10 WORLD TRADE BLOCS WHICH THE WORLD IS PUT INTO. AND THE EUROPEAN UNION LEADER WOULD BECOME THE WHOLE WORLDS DICTATOR AT THE MIDPOINT OR 3 1/2 YEAR MARK OF THE 7 YEAR ISRAELI-ARAB PEACE TREATY OR TRIBULATION PERIOD.PROPHECY IS HEATING UP BIG TIME. THE PRE-TRIBULATION RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH COULD OCCUR ANY SECOND. THEN THE WORLD EU LEADER WOULD BE REVEALED TO THE WHOLE WORLD TO BE THE WORLD DICTATOR FOR THE LAST HALF OF THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION PERIOD.

To Brexit or Regrexit? A dis-United Kingdom ponders turmoil of EU divorce-[Reuters]-By Guy Faulconbridge-June 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

LONDON (Reuters) - To leave, or not to leave: that is the question. Still. After Britain's historic vote to leave the European Union, there is no indication that a so-called Brexit will happen soon. It maybe never will.Prime Minister David Cameron, who is resigning, has said he will not take the formal step to an EU divorce on the grounds that his successor should. Because the referendum is not legally-binding, some politicians are suggesting a parliament vote before formally triggering Brexit.A petition on the UK government's website on holding a second referendum has gained more than 3 million signatories in just two days.European leaders, facing the biggest threat to European unity since World War Two, are divided over how swiftly divorce talks should start. Paris wants haste and German Chancellor Angela Merkel is urging patience. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he wanted to "start immediately".And on Sunday, Scotland's leader said Scotland may veto Brexit altogether. Under devolution rules, the parliaments of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are required to consent to any EU divorce, according to a report by the House of Lords. Most British politicians agree such a decisive 52-48 win for Leave in the referendum means a divorce must happen. Anything less would be a slap in the face of democracy."The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered," a choking Cameron said in his resignation speech, which marked the most tumultuous end to a British premiership since Anthony Eden resigned in 1957 after the Suez crisis.Still, the upswell of chatter - #regrexit is trending big on twitter - over whether Britain might be able to reconsider speaks to the disbelief gripping this continent in the wake of a vote that has unleashed financial and political mayhem.Sterling has plunged, and Britain's political parties are both crippled. Cameron is a lameduck leader, and the main opposition Labour party on Sunday attempted a coup against its leader, with nine top officials resigning."The kaleidoscope has been shaken up not just in terms of our relationship with the EU but in terms of who runs our parties, who governs the country and what the country is made up of," said Anand Menon, Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at King's College London."It is very hard to see where the pieces are."-ARTICLE 50-The law provisioning an EU member country's exit from the union is Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty that is effectively the EU's constitution. It has never been invoked before. Before the vote, Cameron had said Article 50 would be triggered straight away if Britain voted to leave. Over the weekend, several EU officials also said the UK needed to formally split right away - possibly at a Tuesday EU meeting. But officials of the Leave campaign - including former London mayor Boris Johnson - are stepping on the brakes. They say they want to negotiate Britain's post-Brexit relationship with the EU before formally pulling the trigger to divorce.European officials and observers say such a deal is unlikely, especially considering the thorny issues involved. For example, it is unlikely that the EU would grant Britain access to the single market - key to allowing Britain trade goods and services in the EU - without London accepting the free movement of EU workers. But the biggest issue for those who voted to leave the bloc was limits on immigration - something the Leave campaigners promised.-DIVIDED UK-On Sunday, a petition to call for a second referendum was gaining supporters, reaching 3.3 million signatories by the afternoon. David Lammy, a lawmaker for the opposition Labour Party, said it was within parliament's powers to call a second referendum and urged that it be done.Perhaps the most vocal resistance to a British exit is coming from Scotland.Scotland, a nation of five million people, voted to stay in the EU by 62 to 38 percent, compared to the 54 percent in England who voted to leave.Under the United Kingdom's complex arrangements to devolve some powers to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, legislation generated in London to set off an EU divorce would have to gain consent from the three devolved parliaments, according to a report by the House of Lords' European Union Committee.Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told the BBC on Sunday that she would consider urging the Scottish parliament to block such a motion. It is not clear, however, whether such a scenario would ever materialize or be binding. Sturgeon's spokesman later said that the British government might not seek consent in the first place. Moreover, Sturgeon is simply laying out the groundwork for a new referendum on Scottish independence from the United Kingdom --something the first minister said was "highly likely."-WITHDRAWAL-While there is no precedent for Article 50, the House of Lords has discussed how any Brexit would work. In May, it published a report after consultations with legal experts. In the report, Derrick Wyatt, one of the professors involved, said that while it would be politically difficult, the law allows the UK to change its mind after invoking Article 50."In law, the UK could change its mind before withdrawal from the EU and decide to stay in after all," said Wyatt.(Editing by Alessandra Galloni)

Kerry urges Britain, EU to manage their divorce responsibly-Secretary of state’s meeting with Israeli PM in Rome is rescheduled due to gravity of Brexit affair-By AP June 26, 2016, 9:02 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

ROME — US Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday urged Britain and the European Union to manage their divorce responsibly for the sake of global markets and citizens, a day before he was to become the first senior American official to visit London and Brussels since the United Kingdom’s historic referendum.Kerry emphasized the importance of thoughtful cooperation at a time of economic uncertainty and fears about crumbling European unity. He said he would bring a message of US support to both capitals. But he offered no concrete suggestions for how the two sides should make good on the decision by British voters to leave the 28-nation bloc.“The most important thing is that all of us, as leaders, work together to provide as much continuity, as much stability, as much certainty as possible,” Kerry said as he met in Rome with Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni.Responsible handling of the situation, he said, will help “the marketplace understand there are ways to minimize disruption, there are ways to smartly move ahead in order to protect the values and interests that we share.”Kerry had scheduled talks in Rome with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later Sunday. But confronted with the gravity of Britain’s vote on Thursday, which crushed markets from the US to Japan, Kerry set up a frantic, four-nation schedule for Monday. After gathering again with Netanyahu in the morning, he planned to fly to Brussels to discuss Europe’s situation with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. Later, he was to meet British Secretary Philip Hammond in London before returning to Washington by day’s end. With the British, Kerry intended to echo last week’s immediate US response, which focused on the unchanged nature of the allies’ “special relationship.”Even the gloomiest of predictions about the British exit from the EU do not foresee the collapse of the close cultural ties or military alliance between Washington and London. But how relations evolve is an open question, especially if Britain’s separation from the EU causes significant economic pain in the United States.Visiting Britain in April, President Barack Obama noted ongoing US-EU trade negotiations and warned Britons that a vote to “leave” could put them at the back of the line for similar deals. Since the result of the referendum, however, Obama and other American officials have gone out of their way to emphasize the durability of the relationship, playing down the idea of any repercussions from Washington.“We will continue, the United States, to have a very close and special relationship with Great Britain,” Kerry said on the rooftop of a hotel overlooking the Pantheon. “We value that relationship. That does not change because of this vote.”In Brussels, Kerry planned to emphasize US backing for the EU amid speculation that other member countries could follow Britain’s lead.Alongside Gentiloni, Kerry stressed the importance of political unity among 27 remaining countries that still represent a market of 450 million people, and help the US provide security to unstable places in North Africa and the Middle East, and far-flung areas of conflict such as Afghanistan. It’s unclear what more Kerry, or the US, can say or do right now to help Britain or the EU.Britain’s exit negotiations could be a complicated, protracted affair, and the Americans are likely to have little say in the matter. The US also has no answer for the EU’s dilemma about how to respond to the first loss of a member in its history.“There are steps Europe needs to take to respond to the expression of voters and the concerns of people in other countries,” Kerry said, without entering the European debate over a quick or a slow breakup with Britain. He described the US-EU partnership as critical for Europe, America and the world.

Eleven members of UK opposition Labour withdraw support for leader Corbyn-[Reuters]-June 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

LONDON (Reuters) - Eleven senior members of Britain's opposition Labour Party said on Sunday they had withdrawn support for the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, plunging the party into crisis in the wake of Britain's vote to leave the European Union. On Saturday, Corbyn said he would resist any attempt to oust him following criticism by some Labour lawmakers that he had not done enough to convince millions of voters in the party's heartlands to back remaining in the EU. He did not immediately respond to the resignations.Britain is not due to hold a parliamentary election until 2020, but after Prime Minister David Cameron's announcement that he would resign after losing the referendum, many expect that one could now be called earlier by his successor -- putting pressure on Labour to present itself as a credible alternative. The Labour leader sacked his foreign policy chief Hilary Benn early on Sunday after Benn said he had lost confidence in the ability of Corbyn, who is on the party's far left, to lead Labour.Over the course of the day, Gloria de Piero, Heidi Alexander, Lucy Powell, Ian Murray, Kerry McCarthy, Vernon Coaker, Charles Falconer, Lilian Greenwood, Karl Turner and Seema Malhotra all announced they were stepping down from Corbyn's top team, known as the "shadow cabinet".After a stinging election defeat for Labour last year, Corbyn won the leadership thanks to overwhelming support from grassroots members. But he has struggled to win the backing of Labour's members of parliament, many of whom find themselves far closer to the center ground than Corbyn.Since the referendum, two Labour lawmakers have submitted a motion of no no-confidence in Corbyn, calling for his leadership to be debated at a meeting of the party's lawmakers on Monday, followed by a secret ballot.Malhotra, a member of Corbyn's finance policy team who had introduced him at a speech on Saturday, said Labour needed to strengthen its influence at a time of such political and economic upheaval."I have come to the view that under your leadership we will not be able to build bridges across the party, be the strong official opposition that the country needs or reach out to voters and build confidence in Labour," she said in a letter to Corbyn, which she also published on Twitter."We need to recognize that we do not currently look like a government in waiting."Several of the others also said in statements that they doubted Corbyn's ability to lead the party to victory in the next election.(Reporting by Conor Humphries, William James and Kylie MacLellan, Editing by Kevin Liffey)

Spain's leftist parties could clinch majority: exit polls-[Reuters]-By Julien Toyer and Sonya Dowsett-June 26, 2016-YAHOONEWS

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's two biggest left-wing parties, the Unidos Podemos alliance and the Socialist party, could come close to clinching an absolute majority together in a Sunday's parliamentary election, several exit polls showed.Unidos Podemos ("Together We Can"), a coalition of several leftist parties led by anti-austerity newcomer Podemos were seen winning 87 to 95 seats, and the Socialists 81 to 86 seats.Together they would have more than the 176 seats needed for an absolute majority, the exit polls from state broadcaster TVE and the ABC newspaper and Cope radio station showed. The conservative People's Party (PP) of acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was seen winning the most seats overall with 117 to 124. It won 123 seats last year.Liberal party Ciudadanos, a natural ally for the PP, was expected to come fourth once again with 26 to 32 seats, down sharply from 40 seats six months ago, the exit polls showed.A third combination, a grand coalition between the PP and the Socialists would also be possible as it would reach 198 to 210 seats, according to the polls. After six months of bickering, parties have pledged to reach a coalition deal quickly this time although the results may also produce a new stalemate as the Socialists said before the vote they were not ready to back a government lead by either Podemos or the PP.(Additional reporting by the Madrid newsroom; Editing by Louise Ireland)

Police skirmish with Muslim worshipers on Temple Mount-At least 7 Palestinians, 1 police officer injured in clashes on holy site in closing days of Ramadan-By AFP and Times of Israel staff June 26, 2016, 7:20 pm

Israeli police at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount clashed Sunday with Muslims protesting Jewish visits there as the Islamic holy month of Ramadan approached its climax, Palestinians said. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said that it took seven Palestinians to an East Jerusalem hospital for treatment of injuries caused by sponge-tipped bullets, tear gas and beatings at Al-Aqsa Mosque. At least one police officer was injured in the clashes, police said.Police said that officers at the Old City site arrested four masked youths “who were disrupting visits on the Temple Mount” by non-Muslims.A police spokesman questioned by AFP said he was not aware of officers using force.Islamic officials said that trouble began when Israel allowed the visitors into the compound in breach of a tradition which only allows worshipers to enter during the last 10 days of Ramadan, which are now in progress. They said they were taken by surprise at the appearance of the visitors and a group of Muslim youths protested, before retreating to Al-Aqsa Mosque. The 10 days, which began on Sunday, are the most solemn for Muslims and the period attracts the highest number of worshipers to the site.Clashes on the sensitive holy site in the past have sparked wider Palestinian violence in Jerusalem and beyond.

Israel moves to strip citizenship, residency of would-be IS fighters-Interior minister says decision is a ‘message of deterrence to anyone thinking of joining terrorist groups’-By Dov Lieber June 26, 2016, 9:49 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri on Sunday moved to strip two residents of East Jerusalem of their Israeli citizenship and residency status for their involvement with the Islamic State terror group.Deri asked Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit to revoke the citizenship of Luqman Atun, 24, who is a resident of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Tsur Baher. Atun flew to Turkey in October 2014, but didn’t have enough money to be taken to the Syrian border. The interior minister also requested that the permanent residency status of East Jerusalemite Khalil Adel Khalil, 26, be revoked. Khalil was convicted in December 2015 of attempting to join the Islamic State and seeking to fight for the group in Syria.Permanent residency is the status of most of East Jerusalem’s approximately 300,000 Arabs, who are not Israeli citizens, although they can apply for citizenship if they so choose. The Israeli news site Ynet reported that Deri’s request was the most advanced move taken so far to strip Arabs in Israel of citizenship or residency for connection with the Islamic State.Previous interior ministers have called for similar measures against Israeli IS recruits, but no action has ever been carried out.In his letter to the attorney general, Deri wrote, “There is no need to elaborate on the importance of Israeli citizenship, which includes a duty between the citizen and his country and the state and its citizens.“Against the background of increasing global terrorism, we must fight with all our power the phenomenon of those who choose to join terrorist organizations,” the letter continued. “The revocation of the citizenship of those in question has a real message of deterrence to anyone who is considering joining a terrorist organization.”In one of his first moves in his second stint as interior minister, Deri released a memorandum in January outlining an amendment to the not-yet-passed citizenship law, which would have given him the authority to revoke the citizenship of Israeli citizens who join the Islamic State. In November 2015, after a group of seven residents from the northern Israeli Arab town of Jaljulia were charged with plotting to make their way to Syria and fight alongside IS, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for revoking their citizenship.“Whoever joins Islamic State will not be an Israeli citizen, and if he leaves the country’s borders he will not return,” Netanyahu said, and noted that the concept of revoking citizenship for those who join IS was becoming more accepted in the international community.According to some estimates in January, 100–150 Israeli citizens are said to have traveled abroad to fight with IS.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on Friday said his group would not be affected by fresh US sanctions because it receives its money directly from Iran, not via Lebanese banks. In a speech broadcast by the Shiite party’s Al-Manar station, Nasrallah brushed off assertions that Hezbollah would be hurt by US sanctions on Lebanese financial institutions that work with the group.“We do not have any business projects or investments via banks,” Nasrallah said, insisting the group “will not be affected.”“We are open about the fact that Hezbollah’s budget, its income, its expenses, everything it eats and drinks, its weapons and rockets, are from the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he added.Iran was instrumental in Hezbollah’s inception three decades ago and has provided financial and military support to the group. In December, the US Congress voted to impose sanctions on banks that deal with Hezbollah, considered a “terrorist group” by the US.And last month, Lebanon’s central bank instructed the country’s banks and financial institutions to comply with the new measure against the Lebanese Shiite group.Hezbollah has fiercely criticized the law and accused central bank governor Riad Salameh of “yielding” to Washington’s demands.“As long as Iran has money, we have money… Just as we receive the rockets that we use to threaten Israel, we are receiving our money. No law will prevent us from receiving it,” Nasrallah said. The Hezbollah chief also warned that some banks were applying the law too harshly and shutting down the accounts of Lebanese charities.Earlier this month, a bomb exploded outside the Beirut headquarters of Blom Bank, one of the country’s largest, wounding one person.Several Lebanese newspapers known to be critical of Hezbollah said at the time the explosion was a “message” to banks complying with the US ruling.Washington has labelled Hezbollah a global terrorist group since 1995, accusing it of a long list of attacks including the bombing of the US Embassy and Marine barracks in Lebanon in 1983.

Abbas walks back claim rabbis sought to ‘poison’ Palestinian wells-After being accused of blood libel, PA leader reneges on ‘baseless’ allegation, says he didn’t intend ‘to offend Jewish people’-By Times of Israel staff June 25, 2016, 12:02 pm

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday backed away from his claim that rabbis had called to poison Palestinian water, saying he hadn’t intended to offend Jews, after Israel and Jewish groups said his statements were promoting blood libels and anti-Semitic tropes.“After it has become evident that the alleged statements by a rabbi on poisoning Palestinian wells, which were reported by various media outlets, are baseless, President Mahmoud Abbas has affirmed that he didn’t intend to do harm to Judaism or to offend Jewish people around the world,” his office said in a statement. In his speech to the Parliament of the European Union in Brussels on Thursday, Abbas claimed accusations of incitement by the Palestinians were unfair as “The Israelis are doing this as well… Certain rabbis in Israel have said very clearly to their government that our water should be poisoned in order to have Palestinians killed.”A story reported in the Turkish press earlier in June claimed a rabbi had made such a call, though the story was quickly debunked. His office said he “rejected all claims that accuse him and the Palestinian people of offending the Jewish religion. [He] also condemned all accusations of anti-Semitism.”Abbas did not walk back his assertion, also contained in his EU speech, that terrorism worldwide would be eradicated if only Israel withdrew from the West Bank and East Jerusalem.Israel excoriated Abbas on Thursday as a peddler of lies, with the Prime Minister’s Office saying he “showed his true colors” and “is lying when he claims his hand is outstretched in peace.“Israel waits for the day Abbas stops peddling lies and inciting [against Israel]. Until then, Israel will continue to defend itself against Palestinian incitement, which fuels terror,” the statement said.In his speech earlier Thursday, Abbas cited recent criticisms of the current Israeli leadership by former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon and former prime minister Ehud Barak in condemning Israel’s “never-ending provocations” and “fascist policies.”Ya’alon took issue with Abbas’s mention of him, accusing the Palestinian leader of taking advantage of “true, healthy, democratic dialogue that exists in Israeli society (and that does not exist in his).”Abbas, said Ya’alon in a Facebook status, was “lying, as usual, and continuing to propagate blood libels against Israel,” and was proving yet again that he was never interested in an “agreement that recognizes the State of Israel as the state of the Jewish people.”Earlier Thursday, Abbas refused to meet with Rivlin, who was also in Brussels and who addressed the European Parliament a day earlier.US-based Jewish groups joined the fray in denouncing Abbas, with the Anti-Defamation League accusing Abbas of making a speech that “interspersed claims of an interest in reconciliation with Israel with base allegations against the Jewish state, which are reminiscent of age-old anti-Semitic stereotypes.”“Unfortunately, conspiratorial incitement by the Palestinian Authority is not new,” said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, adding that Abbas’s “charges of an Israeli effort to poison Palestinian water, and claims of Israel serving as the root of terrorism worldwide, are particularly disturbing and significant.”The American Jewish Committee also issued a sharp rebuke of the PA president, calling him a “great disappointer” who “abused an international platform to deliver yet another tirade full of invectives and falsehoods against Israel.”AJC CEO David Harris said that “Abbas’s malicious attack contradicts any attempt he made to verbally offer a hand for peace. Indeed, Abbas demonstrably held back his hand both by his remarks, and by rejecting an EU request that he meet with President Rivlin.”In his speech, Abbas said the Palestinian Authority supported efforts to reach a two-state solution as outlined in the current French peace plan and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, and dismissed calls for an interim agreement.“We reject any suggestion of temporary borders or an interim agreement because it’s a waste of time and does not lead anywhere,” he said.“We favor a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital, and the solution will be based on the Arab Peace Initiative that was approved in 2002 with no changes to it,” Abbas continued. “Our hands are extended with a desire for peace, we have the political will to achieve peace.”An international conference aimed at resurrecting the stalled peace talks, to be held later as part of the French plan, must include a “set schedule for negotiations and the implementation of decisions, and constitute a mechanism for the implementation and monitoring of the decisions, as happened in the negotiations with Iran,” he said. The Palestinian leader also claimed that “once the occupation ends, terrorism will disappear, there will be no more terrorism in the Middle East, or anywhere else in the world.”He accused Israel of turning “our country into an open-air prison.”Abbas went on to press EU lawmakers on why Israel was “free to act with impunity” and was not held accountable under international law.“Why is international law not being applied in the case of Israel?” he asked to applause by MEP lawmakers. The European Union has been pressing hard to get the stalled Middle East peace process back on track based on a two-state solution.EU foreign ministers on Monday backed a French initiative to call an international conference on the Middle East aimed at restarting Israeli-Palestinian talks, which have been deadlocked since 2014.

Jordan court charges 21 with ‘terrorism’ — state media-Announcement follows a month that saw two deadly attacks against security officials in the country-By AFP June 26, 2016, 9:46 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A Jordanian court on Sunday charged 21 people with carrying out “terrorist acts” after their arrest in an operation against jihadists in the country’s north in March, a prosecutor said. The State Security Court accused them of committing “terrorist acts that led to deaths,” making explosives and possessing weapons, the official Petra news agency quoted the court’s chief prosecutor as saying. The agency did not say when their trial would begin. In March, Jordan announced it had foiled a plot by the Islamic State jihadist group to carry out attacks in the kingdom in an operation in the city of Irbid.IS had being planning to target “civilian and military sites,” the authorities said, adding seven jihadists were killed and around 20 arrested in the operation. Two deadly attacks targeting security forces rocked the kingdom this month. On Tuesday, a suicide bomber killed seven soldiers in an area where thousands of Syrian refugees are stranded near the Syrian border. The bombing came two weeks after a gunman, who was later arrested, killed five Jordanian intelligence officers in a Palestinian refugee camp north of the capital.Jordan is part of the US-led coalition fighting IS in Syria and Iraq.

Amid reports of warming ties with Israel, Erdogan hosts Hamas leader-Turkish president, Khaled Mashaal discuss bridging gap between Gaza-based group and PA’s Fatah-By AFP and Times of Israel staff June 25, 2016, 2:15 am

As Israel and Ankara reportedly near a deal on normalizing ties, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday met the leader of Palestinian terrorist group Hamas for unscheduled talks.Erdogan received the Doha-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, whose group rules the Gaza Strip, at the Ottoman-era Yildiz Palace in Istanbul, the official Anadolu Agency reported, quoting presidential sources.Turkish press reports have said Israel and Turkey could hold final talks on normalizing ties on Sunday but this has yet to be confirmed.Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday there was a “large possibility” the negotiations would take place by the end of this month.Anadolu said Erdogan and Mashaal discussed how to ease the humanitarian problems of the Palestinians and how to bridge the differences between Hamas and the other main Palestinian group Fatah, which controls the Palestinian Authority-The report made no reference to the Turkish talks with Israel.Previously tight relations between Israel and key NATO member Turkey were significantly downgraded in 2010 after IDF commandos raided a Turkish vessel that was trying to run the Israeli naval blockade on Gaza, The soldiers were attacked by passengers and killed nine Turkish civilians in the ensuing melee. A tenth died later. Two of Turkey’s key conditions for normalization — an apology and compensation — were largely met, leaving its third demand, that Israel lift its blockade on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, as the main obstacle.Channel 2 reported Thursday that under the deal the blockade on the Gaza Strip will continue, but Turkey will be allowed to send equipment and goods via the Israeli port of Ashdod and from there to Gaza. In addition, Turkey is to build a power station, a desalination plant and a hospital in the Strip.Senior officials said the details of the deal have been coordinated with Egypt, according to the report.

Vatican denies pope has ‘Crusades’ mentality over Armenian genocide-Turkey spurns Francis’s recognition of mass killing, but hasn’t issued formal protest despite deputy prime minister’s comment-By Nicole Winfield June 26, 2016, 7:00 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — The Vatican on Sunday strongly dismissed Turkish claims that Pope Francis has adopted a “Crusades” mentality by recognizing the Ottoman-era genocide of Armenians, insisting that Francis’s three-day visit to the Orthodox country was one of peace and reconciliation.Francis wrapped up his trip with calls for closer ties with Armenia’s Oriental Orthodox church and a joint declaration with the Apostolic Church leader on the plight of Christians in the Mideast. The pope and Armenian patriarch also visited a monastery near Armenia’s closed western border with Turkey, where they released two white doves of peace. But it was Francis’ recognition on his first day that the 1915 slaughter by Ottoman Turks of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians constituted planned genocide that continued to reverberate.Turkey issued a harsh rebuttal late Saturday, with Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli calling the comments untrue, “greatly unfortunate” and saying they bore the hallmarks of the “mentality of the Crusades.”Turkey rejects the term genocide, saying the death toll cited by historians is inflated and that people died on both sides as the Ottoman Empire collapsed amid World War I. When Francis first used it last year, Turkey recalled its ambassador for 10 months and accused the pope of spreading lies. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the Holy See hadn’t received any formal complaint from Turkey as of Sunday. Responding to Canikli’s comments, he said nothing in Francis’ texts or actions had suggested a Crusades-like mentality.“It is a spirit of dialogue, of building peace, of building bridges and not walls,” Lombardi said.“The pope is not doing Crusades,” he added. “He has said no words against the Turkish people.”On Sunday, Francis turned his attention to religious affairs, participating in an open-air liturgy on the grounds of the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral in Etchmiadzin, the seat of the Oriental Orthodox church here. The landlocked nation of 3 million was the first nation in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301.Amid haunting chants, Francis processed up and down the central walkway of the Etchmiadzin complex alongside the patriarch, Catholicos Karekin II, both walking under a gold-brocaded canopy as incense furled around them. During the 2-hour service celebrated by Karekin, Francis stood to the side of the altar and offered a greeting calling for greater unity between the two churches.“May an ardent desire for unity rise up in our hearts, a unity that must not be the submission of one to the other, or assimilation, but rather the acceptance of all the gifts that God has given to each,” he said. “Let us pay heed to the younger generation, who seek a future free of past divisions.”He then asked Karekin to bless him: “Bless me, bless me and the Catholic Church, and bless this path toward full unity.”The Armenian Apostolic church and a few other Oriental Orthodox churches split from the Catholic Church in the 5th century in a dispute over the divine and human natures of Jesus Christ. The division arose some six centuries before the Great Schism that split the rest of Orthodoxy from Rome. While still divided over the primacy of the pope, the Apostolic and Catholic churches have friendly relations. Francis and his papal delegation stayed at the Etchmiadzin cathedral complex as guests of Karekin.Still, there have been tensions: Francis and Karekin were supposed to have signed a joint declaration on their improved ties but that was taken off the agenda. Instead the two men expressed their joint concern for Islamic extremist attacks against Christians in the Middle East.“The martyrs belong to all the churches and their suffering is an ‘ecumenism of blood’ which transcends the historical divisions between Christians, calling us all to promote the visible unity of Christ’s disciples,” the declaration read.It repeated a line from a 2001 declaration penned by St. John Paul II and Karekin that the slaughter of Armenians was the “first genocide of the 20th century,” and hailed the progress made in warming relations. After Sunday’s liturgy and a formal luncheon, Francis headed west toward Armenia’s border with Turkey to visit the Khor Virap monastery, one of the most sacred sites in Armenia. The monastery lies in the shadow of Mt. Ararat, where, according to legend, Noah landed his Ark after the great floods. He and Karekin simultaneously released two white doves in a message of peace.Turkey closed the border with Armenia in support for its ally and ethnic kin, Azerbaijan, after the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict erupted into a full-scale war in 1992. The blockade has worsened Armenia’s economic problems. Nagorno-Karabakh is officially part of Azerbaijan, but since a separatist war ended in 1994 it has been under the control of forces that claim to be local ethnic Armenians but that Azerbaijan claims include regular Armenian military.Francis has said he would love to see the Turkish-Armenian border reopened, given his longstanding call for countries to build bridges, not walls. The final declaration expressed hope that a peaceful resolution would be found to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
