But when asked whether a woman who accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 1976 could have resisted him while on quaaludes, he replied, "I don't know."One thing is certain. The drug, outlawed in the United States since 1982, was hugely popular 40 years ago. People routinely swallowed it with their drinks at nightclubs from coast to coast.The 13-year-old girl with whom Roman Polanski pleaded guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse in 1977 said the Oscar-winning director plied her with champagne and half a quaalude before raping her at Jack Nicholson's house. Polanski fled to France in 1978 to avoid a long prison sentence and continues to live there as a fugitive.Holly Madison, in her recently published memoir, "Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny," writes that Hugh Hefner once offered her a handful of quaaludes."' Police fear clashes could break out following tensions surrounding a video filmed Thursday in which a Jewish woman who had just returned from a visit to the Temple Mount is seen calling the Muslim prophet a “pig.”The clip went viral among Palestinians on social media and the furious responses led to some minor clashes with Israeli police officers following Friday prayers on the Temple Mount.Muslim worshipers can be seen in a separate video chanting “with spirit, with blood, we’ll redeem you, messenger of God!”The incident Thursday began when a Jewish group visiting the Temple Mount were escorted out of the site and into the alleys of the Old City. They were then heckled by the Murabitun — self-proclaimed guardians of the holy site, who are funded by the Islamic Movement.A woman from the Jewish group decided to respond, looking into the camera of a person assumed to be a member of the organization, and saying in Hebrew: “Muhammad is a pig.”The statement enraged the Muslim women in the organization, who then shouted insults and threats of violence at the Jewish woman. The military wing of Hamas opened a Gaza summer camp on Saturday, providing combat training for 25,000 Palestinians as young as 15.Hamas, an Islamic extremist group that is the de facto power in Gaza, is currently engaged in indirect contacts with Israel to try to reach a long-term truce, but a year after last summer’s devastating 50-day war the terrorist movement has kept up the fighting talk.“The goal of these military training camps is to train the vanguard for liberation — spiritually, intellectually and physically — to be ready and able to play its role in liberation,” said a statement by the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military wing.It said that participants, aged 15-60, would spend two weeks being “trained in military techniques and in firing live ammunition” as well as “first aid and rescue techniques.”As with all the brigades’ activities the camps will be conducted out of public and media sight.Rescue squads dealt with thousands of local victims during the war of July-August 2014, the third in Gaza in six years.Hamas has long run summer camps devoted to sport and study of the Koran in Gaza but over the winter the al-Qassam brigades launched a new kind of camp, giving military training to 15 to 20-year-olds.Human rights activists condemned it as a forced militarization of Gazan society and a violation of children’s rights.Brushing off the criticism, the brigades are repeating the exercise with the summer camp, while raising the upper age limit to 60.Israel withdrew its military and civilian presence from Gaza in 2005. Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, ousting the Fatah forces of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in a violent takeover.Avowedly committed to the destruction of Israel, Hamas has fought three rounds of conflict against Israel since it took charge, most recently a 50-day war last summer. Hezbollah is proud to be backed by Iran, certain it can still rely on Iranian support, and still regards the US as the “Great Satan,” the Lebanese terrorist group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah said on Saturday, dismissing concerns that Tehran would revise its policies toward the Shiite organization following the signing of a nuclear agreement with world powers.“We deal with trust and complete assurance over this,” Nasrallah said during a ceremony to honor the children of Hezbollah terrorists killed in battle, according to Reuters. Iran’s continued support allows Hezbollah to resist Israeli and US policies in the region, he said.“The US will forever remain the Great Satan, before and after the nuclear agreement, because the resistance will defend its territory, and this is a resistance against the Zionist project,” Nasrallah said.The Hezbollah head criticized the US for its continued designation of Hezbollah as a terrorist group, and stated that the imposition of new sanctions against three of the organization’s military leaders believed to be involved in operations in Syria would have no impact on the group.Last week in Vienna, Iran and the so-called P5+1 world powers agreed to a deal that limits the regime’s nuclear program in exchange for an end to crippling economic sanctions.Israel has been fiercely critical of the nuclear deal, arguing that the deal paves Iran’s path to the bomb and that the money Iran receives, as sanctions are lifted, will be used to sponsor terror and destabilize the region.On Wednesday, Israeli Foreign Ministry’s Director General Dore Gold said Israel anticipates a “major escalation” of Iranian-backed terror attacks on its borders as a direct result of the nuclear agreement. Although he did not detail the specific threats for Israel that could be impacted, or list specific accommodations that Israel sought to counter the threats, Gold warned that “the moment that the funds become available from frozen accounts [after the removal of sanctions on Iran] … that’s when the Middle East goes south and things become extremely dangerous in the region.”The release of $150 billion of frozen funds would free Iran from having to choose which terror activities to support, Gold said. Iranian troops and their proxies in the region “will have an ability to be everywhere simultaneously.”While Hezbollah has been operating in Lebanon since the 1980s, its recent involvement in the Syrian civil war — on the side of the Assad regime — has brought its forces to the Golan Heights, where altercations between the group’s fighters and IDF troops have already taken place.

The former wife of spy-for-Israel Jonathan Pollard said Saturday there was “no official word” that Pollard will soon go free, even as a flurry of reports indicated that the US government may not intervene to prevent his release when he becomes eligible for parole on November 21.The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that the Obama administration is preparing to release Pollard, who was convicted in 1987 of spying for Israel, in hopes of alleviating tensions over the Iranian nuclear deal.Administration officials responded that there was “zero linkage” between Pollard’s status and any foreign policy considerations.” But the US Justice Department appeared to affirm talk of a November release when it said Friday that Pollard should serve “his full sentence for the serious crimes he committed, which in this case is a 30-year sentence as mandated by statute.”In a Channel 2 interview, his former wife Anne Pollard stressed, “There is no official word that Jonathan is being released on any date… There is no news, no official response on that whatsoever.”His eligibility for parole on November 21, 2015 has been public knowledge for years, she noted, and the question was, and remains, whether there would be intervention to prevent him going free on or around that date.Pleading for his release, and for the Israeli government to allocate “a large budget” to help him, Anne Pollard said her former husband had done everything the prison authorities asked of him, had a history of “good behavior,” and is “very, very ill.”She was “100 percent” certain he would want to be on a plane to Israel “within hours” if released, she said. Asked if the US government would want to prevent this, and to forbid him from leaving the country if he were paroled, she said she would have thought they would want to put him on the first plane out.It was heartbreaking, she said, that he had spent his whole life sitting in jail. “I can’t bear it any more,” she said.Israeli political analysts on both Channel 10 and Channel 2 Saturday night assessed that Pollard would indeed be allowed to go free in November. The goal would be to demonstrate that the Obama administration is “not hostile” to Israel amid the tensions over the nuclear deal with Iran, according to Channel 10.Israel’s Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said Saturday that Pollard should be freed as soon as he is eligible. The flurry of reports reflect a US government website that lists Pollard’s release date (under ID number 09185-016) as November 21, 2015 – a date that would coincide with the 30th anniversary of his arrest.Lauer noted that November 21, 2015, has been listed as a release date for Pollard for decades.In order for Pollard to be released, a Notice of Action must first be issued – and presumably, it is Pollard’s legal team which would receive it first. According to Lauer, no such Notice of Action has been received.Lauer said the authorities could issue such a notice shortly before Pollard’s release date.Although Pollard is serving a life sentence under a Federal law that allows the possibility of parole, he is the only American citizen who has been sentenced to life in prison for passing classified information to a US ally.The US has at times considered releasing Pollard, but has been met with fierce opposition by some in the CIA, the FBI and the Justice Department. This could again be the case if indeed the Obama administration is considering it, but “[Pollard’s] chances at winning freedom are better now than they have ever been,” according to the WSJ report that attributes the belief to unnamed US officials.There have been multiple false starts and reports over the years indicating that Pollard’s release was imminent. Emma Sky was at a loss for words when asked by a member of the British Iraq Inquiry in January 2011 what training she should have undergone before leaving for Iraq eight years earlier.“I was trying to think what one-week course you could go on that would equip you to occupy somebody else’s country,” she said. “This was a crazy question, but I thought that my ten years in Israel/Palestine had given me such enormous experiences that helped me develop my instincts on how to approach things in Iraq.”Responding to a British government request for volunteers to rebuild the country following the fall of Saddam Hussein in June 2003, the petite British Council employee soon found herself responsible for the entire province of Kirkuk, where Kurds and Arabs were struggling for dominance over the oil-rich territory.In her new book The Unraveling: High Hopes and Missed Opportunities in Iraq (Public Affairs, 2015), Sky describes a decade of trials and tribulations in occupied Iraq, first as Governorate Coordinator for the northern province of Kirkuk under the Coalition Provisional Authority (2003-2004), and then, three years later, as political adviser to General Ray Odierno who commanded the US forces in the country (2007-2010).Sky’s book, described by a New York Times book review last week as an “important and disturbing memoir,” is a tribute to the American forces alongside whom she served in Iraq. It oscillates between satisfaction at minor successes in a desperately fragmented country, to deep frustration over America’s ultimate failure to safeguard Iraq’s embryonic democracy.Under President Barack Obama, eager to end America’s involvement in the country as quickly as possible, the administration effectively handed Iraq over to a sectarian Shiite government loyal to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, tragically squandering human life and vast financial resources in the process, the book argues.Kibbutz ‘was the ideal society’-Born to a Jewish father whom she never knew, Sky told The Times of Israel that it was her search for identity as a young woman which originally drew her to Israel. “As a young person, you’re always looking for where you belong,” she said.After graduating from high school, Sky decided to volunteer on Kibbutz Kfar Menachem, a workers’ community established by socialist youth group Hashomer Hatzair in 1939 located midway between Jerusalem and the coastal city of Ashkelon.“For me it was the ideal society, an imagined community,” Sky recalled her time surrounded by Scandinavian volunteers, underprivileged Israeli teenagers from development towns, and soldiers of Nahal, a program combining military service and community volunteerism.“There you were, with a bunch of young people, really discussing the meaning of life. She decided that her purpose in life would be “to help bring peace in the Middle East.”“At the time I didn’t know how, but I thought that’s something I want to dedicate myself to,” she said.Dashed hopes for peace-That resolve brought her to back to the region, and she began volunteering with Palestinian NGOs in the West Bank. When the Oslo Peace Accords were signed in September 1993 — now an employee of the British Council — she ran institution-building projects for the fledgling Palestinian Authority, as well as programs bringing Israeli and Palestinian civilians together.“I thought I’d be there for five years until there’d be peace and two states. So after a decade, when the Second Intifada broke out, that’s when I despaired and left,” she said.When the First Gulf War broke out in August 1990, Sky was an impassioned pacifist itching to take action. She signed up as a human shield, determined to protect the Iraqi population from Coalition air strikes. She never ended up leaving for that war, however.The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin was a watershed moment for Sky. Believing wholeheartedly that one must do everything in one’s power to support the cause of peace, she attended the Tel Aviv rally on November 4, 1995, where Rabin was gunned down by right-wing extremist Yigal Amir.“I had though it inevitable that there would be two states for two peoples. But when Rabin was assassinated I could see how one violent individual could destroy the hopes of a generation,” she said. “If you don’t stand up against those individuals, then they’ll win.”If you want to bring about change, you have to compromise’Sky may have stayed home for the First Gulf War, but her spirit of volunteerism materialized 12 years later, in the aftermath of the 2003 American invasion of Iraq which toppled the dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein.“I thought: I’ve gained all these skills and experience working in Israel/Palestine for a decade, I’m against the war, but let me go and be a moderating influence, let me go and use my skills to help Iraq,” she said.‘It’s much easier to be on the sidelines, to be a referee, than it is to actually work within one side to try and bring about a result,’ Sky said“It’s much easier to be on the sidelines, to be a referee, than it is to actually work with one side to try and bring about a result,” she continued. “I think as I got older, I realized if you want to bring about change you have to compromise. To change others, you’ve got to be willing to change yourself.”Sky learned that far from simply being “good guys” or “bad guys,” as American soldiers often categorized them, Iraqis could be molded into friends or enemies depending on how they’re treated.“People can change their opinions,” she said. “From my time in Israel/Palestine I know there isn’t one Israeli opinion or one Palestinian opinion. There are many different shades of opinions, and those opinions change.”Another lesson gleaned from the Israeli-Palestinian context was that “it’s all about the politics.”-“I had spent a decade trying to find technical solutions to problems, and watched everything fall apart because the politics weren’t right. I had the same sense in Iraq: if we don’t get the politics right, there’s no amount of nation-building or capacity development you can do that will be sustainable.”-Iraqis miss their Jewish neighbors-During her time in Iraq, Sky was surprised by the level of Iraqi sentimentality for the country’s bygone Jewish population. At the start of the twentieth century, Jews were estimated to comprise 40 percent of Baghdad’s population, she noted.“The memory of Jews in Iraq is everywhere,” Sky said, remarking that Youtube clips of traditional Iraqi music commonly circulated in the county were often preformed by Jews living in Israel. “Iraqis see that their music heritage and some of their culture has been kept alive by Iraqi Jews.”Once, during a visit with Masoud Barazani, President of the autonomous Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, Sky was told of an emotional meeting between the Kurdish leader and a congressman’s chief of staff of Kurdish-Jewish descent.“The chief of staff said to Barazani: ‘you may not remember me, but we’ve met before. I was the little boy who you helped escape from Iraq,'” she said. The American staffer as well as Barazani’s translator were in tears, Sky wrote in her book, and Barazani himself “struggled to maintain his composure.” During his meeting with Sky, Barazani proudly noted that former Israeli defense minister Yitzhak Mordechai hailed from the next village over.‘The memory of Jews in Iraq is everywhere,’ Sky said-Those days, sadly, are long gone. Today, with the Islamic State gaining control over vast tracts of land in northern and western Iraq, it is doubtful whether Iraq even exists as a state today. It is not only the Jews — who composed the Babylonian Talmud in the land between the two rivers 1,500 years ago — who are now extinct from Iraq, but increasingly also Christian and other minorities whose existence can be traced back millennia.So what lesson can Israeli decision-makers learn from America’s mistakes in Iraq? For Sky, the most important conclusion is the danger of Islamic radicalization in the absence of a viable political solution.“If some solution to the Palestinian situation is not found, if there’s no willingness to try and work with the Palestinian Authority, the only alternative becomes the Islamic State,” she said. “The Islamic State is already trying to make inroads into the Palestinian areas. That should be the long-term strategic fear that Israel has. The only way to prevent this is to try and reach a two-state solution.”Once, a visiting US Treasury official wondered aloud in Sky’s presence why Iraqis hated the Americans so much despite the massive American financial investment in their well-being.“I remembered Israelis saying: ‘the Palestinians have a high standard of living, they’ve got fridges, they’ve got electricity, they should be grateful.’ They’re not grateful because they don’t like being occupied; they want to run their own affairs.”
