vatican city-Vladimir Putin is ready to explain Moscow’s position regarding the Ukrainian crisis to Pope Francis. This is according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, who was quoted by Russian news agency TASS. “If the Pope shows an interest I have no doubt that the president will willingly give a detailed explanation about Russia’s position,” Peskov stated. The visit Vladimir Putin will be paying to the Vatican tomorrow for his second meeting with Francis, was only officially added to Russian and Vatican diplomats’ confidential agendas a few weeks ago. As in the case of the first visit, it was Putin’s decision to add a stop-over in Rome to his Italian schedule, specifically in order to meet and speak with the Bishop of Rome. The Russian president is visiting Italy to attend Expo 2015 in Milan and the visit to Rome was not part of the original schedule. Putin’s request was immediately granted and a meeting with the Russian leader was added to the Pope’s packed schedule without any hesitation.The fact that the Holy See lost no time in agreeing to the meeting is a clear sign: it confirms that the Pope and Vatican diplomacy do not intend to set up a “cordone sanitaire” against Putin’s Russia as some Western circles would like to do. The initiatives the Pope and Vatican diplomacy have put into action with regard to the Syrian conflict – first and foremost with the day of prayer and fasting for Syria on 7 September 2013 –, converge with Russia’s diplomatic strategy, defusing the threat of an external military intervention in Syria and set in motion the process of destroying Assad’s chemical weapons stockpile.Almost two years on, the clash points between Russia and many Western countries have multiplied. The Successor of Peter, however, has managed to keep a channel of communication open with the Kremlin’s leader and is being expanded to some new areas. Amid the spiralling hostilities and reciprocal accusations between Russia and Western countries, set in stone by the Ukrainian crisis, the Pope has managed to stay out of the disagreements between opposing sides. Both political and Church leaders have expressed their public appreciation for the words the Pope pronounced on the Ukrainian conflict and the “third world war fought piecemeal”.At the end of April, Patriarch Kirill himself praised the position the Holy See had taken on the Ukrainian crisis: “Pope Francis and the Holy See's State secretary have taken a considered position on the situation in Ukraine, avoiding unilateral assessments and calling for an end to the fratricidal war." Even when Turkey lashed out at the Pope for his message on the Armenian genocide, Putin took the chance to publicly express his esteem for the Pope’s “insight into the game”: Talking to reporters last 16 April, he said: “I consider the Pope to have so much authority in the world that he will find a way to achieve understanding with all people on our planet, regardless of their religious affiliation.” Yet another sign that Moscow does not consider the current Bishop of Rome to be a sort of chaplain of the West.It is highly likely that the Ukrainian crisis will be at the centre of Putin’s conversation with the Pope in the Vatican. Another key topic they will probably discuss is the violence that is tearing apart the Middle East and bringing suffering to Christians who have been present in those lands since the days of the Apostles. As the Syrian conflict spreads, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Kremlin have shown a greater interest in the vicissitudes of the Middle Eastern Churches. The need to protect Christians in Arab countries has become an important part of Putin’s Middle Eastern agenda. After decades of atheism under the Soviet communist regime, Putin is also taking on the neo-czarist-style role of protector of Eastern Christians (while the traditional French “protectorate” of days gone by, is disappearing, particularly with regard to the Catholic communities of the Middle East). However, Francis has not given Western or Russian circles any pretext to exploit the misfortunes and persecution of Christians in the Middle East to fuel indiscriminate Islamophobic sentiment. Even his most recent messages pronounced in Sarajevo, - where the wounds of ethnic and religious conflicts that tortured the heart of Europe at the end of last century have not yet healed – were confirmation that Pope Francis’ aim is not to obtain political support or form “Holy Alliances” with the world’s powers, but to make a disinterested contribution to preventing the causes of conflict. At the same time, he is warding off all attempts to “conceal” power-hungry interests with ideologies based on ethnic and religious factors. These interests, starting with arms trafficking (something Francis constantly returns to in his speeches) and the fight for control over natural resources, are the causes of conflict.Being a Jesuit, the Pope is well aware that Russia – like China – are countries that have played key roles throughout history and cannot be cut out of any sincere attempt at shared leadership in the context of globalisation. Given his evangelical approach to the world’s problems, a visit to Moscow could be on the cards and in fact the Pope himself expressed his interest in a potential visit right from the very first months of his pontificate. Russian diplomat, Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s advisor, has stated that during their meeting, the Pope and the Russian leader “will discuss possible further contact” but he added that he does not know whether Putin will invite the Pope to Moscow and that this “is not only something that involves the State” but the Russian Orthodox Church as well.Paradoxically, it is some of the high ranking figures of the Patriarchate of Moscow that are most concerned about Pope Francis’ popularity among Russians too. The comment made by the Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev at the last Synod on the family left a terrible impression in the Vatican. He is not the Patriarch but the Patriarchate of Moscow’s “foreign affairs minister”. On that occasion, Hilarion took advantage of the hospitality offered to him, launching a full-fledged attack on the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which was totally out of place. And it is a known fact that the Patriarchate of Moscow has so far been reluctant to proceed quickly along the ecumenical path from a theological point of view – here, the theologians of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople play a dominant role – preferring the approach of an “alliance” between Churches in defence of moral values.The current Successor of Peter has shown a concrete willingness to “learn” about the ecclesiology of his Orthodox brothers. But so far, in the Orthodox world, the Russian Church appears to be the one that is least ready to seize the moment and to let go of the ghosts of the past and put an end to their calculations as officials of the sacred.

vatican city-The Pope cautions faithful against turning to seers to learn “exactly what message Our Lady will be sending at 4’o’clock this afternoon,” in other words, those who turn their life into a series of messages, private revelations, secrets and predictions about the future.In the homily he pronounced at yesterday’s mass in St. Martha’s House, Francis spoke about “those who are constantly searching for some “novelty” in their Christian identity,” “forgetting that they were chosen, anointed,” that “they have the seal of the Holy Spirit” and they go in search of seers, asking: 'Where are the seers who can tell us exactly what message Our Lady will be sending at 4’o’clock this afternoon?' And their lives depend on this. This identity is not Christian. God’s final word is “Jesus” and nothing else.”These words come three days after the announcement of an imminent decision on the Medjugorje case, which Francis mentioned on his return trip from Sarajevo. Many connected the two things, interpreting his homily almost as the anticipation of a negative pronouncement on the phenomenon which began in Herzegovina in 1981 and has not yet reached a conclusion.This is not the first time Francis has expressed himself in these terms. On 13 November 2013, during a sermon in St. Martha’s House, he criticised the spirit of curiosity, which impels us to want to feel that “the Lord is here or rather there, or leads us to say: “But I know a visionary, who receives letters from Our Lady, messages from Our Lady”. “But, look, Our Lady is the Mother of everyone! And she loves all of us. She is not a postmaster, sending messages every day,” the Pope added. Even then, the words he pronounced at mass were linked to Medjugorje, even though he could also have been referring to other phenomena of this kind and especially to the attitude of those who transform faith into insane curiosity.The Medjugorje apparitions, initially involved a group of children and continued under the form of private apparitions that still continue today, at specific times and on a daily basis. The Holy See does not want seers to take part in public demonstrations trumpeting the authenticity of the apparitions as a definite, even mentioning the times in advertising campaigns.Of the six initial seers, three confirm that they still see the Virgin Mary at the same time in the afternoon, wherever they are; one of them witnesses an apparition every 2nd day of the month, while the latter two see one apparition a year.It is hard to imagine that the Pope intended to anticipate the decision on Medjugorje with his words in the St. Martha House mass. After the exhaustive and balanced work carried out by the commission of experts and theologians, which Benedict XVI decided to set up, appointing Cardinal Camillo Ruini as head, the case passed into the hands of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Congregation will be discussing it in the coming days. The outcome will then be presented to Francis.When Ruini’s report was delivered to the Pope in January 2014, the Commission approved the first apparitions witnessed in the summer of 1981 but expressed its doubts over the apparitions which followed and have not yet come to an end, even though no proof was found of trickery or deceit. Similarly, in the case of the Fatima apparitions of 1917, the Church approved these but not those which followed, along with the revelations that Sister Lucia dos Santos has continued to have.The issue of the healing of millions of pilgrims that go to pray in Medjugorje every year, in the parish chapel, which according to many could become a shrine under the direct tutelage of the Holy See, is completely different and separate from the pronouncement on the supernatural aspect of the event. Pastoral care for faithful is one of the aspects Pope Francis holds closest to his heart, having always valued popular devotion as an archbishop in Argentina.We must not forget how varied the world of private revelations is, with so-called seers and pseudo-seers and the web has blown up these phenomena. Here is an example that occurred recently: on 9 May, during the course of a meeting that lasted all but a few minutes, at the end of the rosary prayer in the Vatican Gardens, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was handed a sizable book with a dark red coloured cover and a shell-shaped seal. Neither the Pope Emeritus, not his personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein knew what it was about. They had no knowledge of the contents, nor did they know the identity of the two envoys sent to represent “seer” Franca Miscio, better known as “Conchiglia”, founder of an international movement whose model figures are Guadalupe and Juan Diego.The “messages” received from the fake seer are easy to find online. Conchiglia presents herself as a prophetess of our time and fills pages and pages with words that she assures come directly from God, Jesus and Mary. One of the strangest “revelations” she makes is an unshakable belief that aliens exist and that “alien DNA” has mixed with “Terrestrian” DNA so that there are now “alien beings” ruling the world.The Vatican is described in the “prophesies” as den of all evils: “The Vatican is the centre of the global power that wants to create a single global religion uniting all false religions … it is the den of the seven deadly sins and other kinds of vileness.” In addition, Conchiglia deifies the figure of Mary.The false seer wrote a great deal about Benedict XVI’s resignation. She claims his resignation resulted from the workings of international masonry and that Ratzinger is apparently still the real and legitimate Pope, while Francis, whom she defines as a “wicked man seated at the Throne of Peter”, is an “imposter”, an anti-Pope, a representative of the Anti-Christ. These comments speak for themselves.Various figures have recently warned against Conchiglia’s “messages”, including the Bishop of Jesi (Italy), Gerardo Rocconi who met her in person and the Bishop of Senigallia (Italy), Giuseppe Orlandoni, who has repeatedly described the words of the false seer as “objectively heretical and against the doctrine of the Church”. Conchiglia’s movement has published the images of the meeting with the Pope Emeritus on her website, making them stand out and presenting him almost as a guarantee seal for the messages contained in the book. But Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Prefect of the Papal Household and personal secretary to Benedict XVI clarified what happened in a statement to Vatican Insider.Answering a series of questions put to him by Vatican Insider: “A certain Mr. Mimmo Rocco who presented himself as chief superintendent of the Italian Carabinieri, had asked some time ago, along with many others, to meet the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. He was granted a brief meeting after the rosary. There were two of them, him and one other person. They didn’t know each other. During the meeting, they presented Benedict XVI with a book, as shown in a series of photos published on the website. We had no knowledge of the content. The meeting only lasted a few minutes.”“When I got home,” Gänswein continued, “I looked at the book and so did Benedict XVI later on. We were surprised and shocked because we noticed straight away that the book contained some “private revelations”. It didn’t take long to work out that the whole thing was strange and incredible to say the least. The Pope Emeritus asked me to send the book to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith which is competent in this field, immediately.”“We didn’t think anything of the meeting,” Mgr. Gänswein concluded. “There are many people around who call themselves “seers”… We had no idea that the book contained those comments. Naturally, there is no support for the “seer” or the contents of the book in any way. Had Benedict XVI known that he was going to be given a collection of messages of this kind, he would never have agreed to the meeting”.

vatican city-The U.S. and the Holy See have signed a joint measure to reduce tax evasion by American individuals holding money at the so-called Vatican bank, in what officials said is the first such inter-governmental agreement between the country and the city-state.Under the new measure, signed Wednesday by U.S. Ambassador Ken Hackett and Vatican Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Holy See has agreed to automatically report information on Vatican bank accounts held by American citizens.While neither U.S. nor Holy See officials would identify how many American individuals hold money at the Vatican, the number is assumed to be rather small, perhaps in the dozens.Hackett, the American ambassador to the Holy See, told reporters at a briefing Wednesday morning that the move was “a type of stamp of approval” of the improvements the once scandal-plagued Vatican financial structure has made in recent years.“This agreement, I think, is a step in the process,” said Hackett. “They have improved things.”The new agreement obliges the Holy See to report information on U.S. citizens holding bank accounts with contents above a certain monetary threshold as stipulated under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), passed by the U.S. Congress in 2010.Officials said the U.S. has signed such agreements with some 62 other countries and had reached “agreements in substance” with some 50 others.While the U.S. and the Holy See have signed agreements in the past -- for example, to exchange information on financial crimes -- those agreements were signed between agencies and not between the two governments.An inter-governmental agreement is considered a step below a formal treaty between governments and does not require U.S. Senate ratification.Marji Christian, a political and economic officer at the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, said the new agreement had been under discussion for about two years but would not comment on the substance of the discussions.Part of the need for the lengthy time frame, Christian said, were the various changes Pope Francis has been instituting at the Vatican’s financial structures. Rome-Pope Francis has appointed Mgr. Heiner Koch as the new Archbishop of Berlin, the Vatican informs in a statement. Mgr. Koch, from the German city of Düsseldorf, is 64 years old, he was Secretary General of the organising committee for the 2002 World Youth Day (WYD) in Cologne and has, until now, occupied the position of Bishop of Dresden.Italian Catholic news blog Il Sismografo recalls that Koch completed his theological studies in Bonn. He was ordained a priest on 13 June 1980 and joined the Archdiocese of Cologne. In 1989 he was nominated Rector of the Mariä Himmelfahrt in Cologne and in 1992 became the Director of the Pastoral Office of the archiepiscopal Curia.In 1996 he was granted the title Honorary Prelate of His Holiness and in 1998 he was nominated Canon of the Metropolitan Chapter of Cologne. Seoul (AFP) - South Korean President Park Geun-Hye has postponed a planned trip to the United States, her spokesman said Wednesday, amid growing public alarm at the MERS outbreak which has now claimed nine lives.The decision to delay the June 14-18 visit came after Park's administration came under fire for what critics say has been an inadequate response to the crisis."President Park decided to postpone the US trip in order to help end the outbreak of MERS and take care of public safety," her senior press secretary Kim Sung-Woo told reporters."We asked for understanding from the US government and both nations agreed to reschedule the trip at the earliest convenience."Two new deaths and 13 new cases were confirmed on Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths to nine and the number of infections to 108 in the worst outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outside Saudi Arabia.The first infected patient was diagnosed on May 20 after a trip to Saudi Arabia.The 68-year-old man spread the virus, visiting four medical facilities and infecting other patients and health care workers.Since then, nearly 3,500 people who were exposed to infected people have been placed under quarantine of varying strictness.The outbreak has also triggered alarm elsewhere in Asia.A woman was rushed to a Hong Kong hospital Wednesday on suspicion she had contracted MERS, after returning from a trip to South Korea.Hong Kong had previously quarantined 19 people as a precaution against MERS and had also isolated suspected cases which turned out to be false alarms.Park's approval ratings have taken a dive as critics accused her administration and health officials of responding too slowly to the crisis.A survey by polling agency Realmeter showed on Wednesday that more than half of South Koreans opposed her planned trip to the US, a major ally.The two latest fatalities were a 75-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man.They contracted the virus at Samsung Medical Centre, a major hospital in Seoul.It has seen 47 infections, the highest number at any single health facility, as well as 10 of the 13 new patients reported Wednesday.The three other new victims had their diagnoses confirmed at three different hospitals, two in the central city of Daejeon and one near a southern suburb of Seoul.

The US, Canada, the UK, and Poland, were the only countries in which a majority of people supported Article V.In Italy, 40 percent were in favour, and 51 percent against.But, in a sign of how Europeans view US protection, large majorities in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK believe the US would use force against Russia even if their own states wouldn’t.The poll, which also surveyed people in Ukraine and in Russia, and which focused on the conflict between those two countries, found that people in Poland (50 percent in favour) were more inclined to back sending weapons to Ukraine to support government forces, than those in Germany (18 percent in favour).“Poles are more concerned about Russia’s role in the current crisis than other Nato publics,” Pew said.Seventy percent of Polish people supported the statement that “Russia is a major military threat to neighbouring countries”, compared to 49 percent in other Nato states.Views from Poland also stood out on blaming Russia for the violence in east Ukraine, with 57 percent of Poles doing so, compared to 37 percent in other Nato countries.The research showed a profound change in attitudes between publics in Russia and the EU.In 2011, 64 percent of Russians had a favourable view of the EU. ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's emergency management agency says more than 6,000 Syrians have crossed into Turkey in the past week, fleeing fighting between Islamic State militants and Kurdish forces near the northern Syrian city of Tel Abyad.The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said Wednesday that the refugees entered through the border town of Akcakale, where they were being checked for health problems before being transferred to camps or allowed to join relatives in Turkey.Dogan news agency video shows hundreds of refugees entering Turkey through a makeshift crossing.Kurdish fighters are closing in on the Islamic state group in Tel Abyad, capturing towns and villages in the country's northeast, supported by U.S.-led airstrikes. BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday it was astonished by a U.S. State Department report which raised worries about the Chinese commitment to nonproliferation.The State Department said Chinese entities kept supplying missile parts to countries of concern and China had continued to develop its "biotechnology infrastructure" and "engage in biological activities with potential dual-use applications".Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China had made important contributions towards nonproliferation."In recent years, the United States has in many venues offered full approval for China's efforts and contributions made," he told a daily news briefing.But the latest State Department report had "played the same old tune" and "made presumptuous comments", Hong added.

This is according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, who was quoted by Russian news agency TASS. “If the Pope shows an interest I have no doubt that the president will willingly give a detailed explanation about Russia’s position,” Peskov stated. The visit Vladimir Putin will be paying to the Vatican tomorrow for his second meeting with Francis, was only officially added to Russian and Vatican diplomats’ confidential agendas a few weeks ago. As in the case of the first visit, it was Putin’s decision to add a stop-over in Rome to his Italian schedule, specifically in order to meet and speak with the Bishop of Rome. The Russian president is visiting Italy to attend Expo 2015 in Milan and the visit to Rome was not part of the original schedule. Putin’s request was immediately granted and a meeting with the Russian leader was added to the Pope’s packed schedule without any hesitation.The fact that the Holy See lost no time in agreeing to the meeting is a clear sign: it confirms that the Pope and Vatican diplomacy do not intend to set up a “cordone sanitaire” against Putin’s Russia as some Western circles would like to do. The initiatives the Pope and Vatican diplomacy have put into action with regard to the Syrian conflict – first and foremost with the day of prayer and fasting for Syria on 7 September 2013 –, converge with Russia’s diplomatic strategy, defusing the threat of an external military intervention in Syria and set in motion the process of destroying Assad’s chemical weapons stockpile.Almost two years on, the clash points between Russia and many Western countries have multiplied. The Successor of Peter, however, has managed to keep a channel of communication open with the Kremlin’s leader and is being expanded to some new areas. Amid the spiralling hostilities and reciprocal accusations between Russia and Western countries, set in stone by the Ukrainian crisis, the Pope has managed to stay out of the disagreements between opposing sides. Both political and Church leaders have expressed their public appreciation for the words the Pope pronounced on the Ukrainian conflict and the “third world war fought piecemeal”.At the end of April, Patriarch Kirill himself praised the position the Holy See had taken on the Ukrainian crisis: “Pope Francis and the Holy See's State secretary have taken a considered position on the situation in Ukraine, avoiding unilateral assessments and calling for an end to the fratricidal war." Even when Turkey lashed out at the Pope for his message on the Armenian genocide, Putin took the chance to publicly express his esteem for the Pope’s “insight into the game”: Talking to reporters last 16 April, he said: “I consider the Pope to have so much authority in the world that he will find a way to achieve understanding with all people on our planet, regardless of their religious affiliation.” Yet another sign that Moscow does not consider the current Bishop of Rome to be a sort of chaplain of the West.It is highly likely that the Ukrainian crisis will be at the centre of Putin’s conversation with the Pope in the Vatican. Another key topic they will probably discuss is the violence that is tearing apart the Middle East and bringing suffering to Christians who have been present in those lands since the days of the Apostles. As the Syrian conflict spreads, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Kremlin have shown a greater interest in the vicissitudes of the Middle Eastern Churches. The need to protect Christians in Arab countries has become an important part of Putin’s Middle Eastern agenda. After decades of atheism under the Soviet communist regime, Putin is also taking on the neo-czarist-style role of protector of Eastern Christians (while the traditional French “protectorate” of days gone by, is disappearing, particularly with regard to the Catholic communities of the Middle East). However, Francis has not given Western or Russian circles any pretext to exploit the misfortunes and persecution of Christians in the Middle East to fuel indiscriminate Islamophobic sentiment. Even his most recent messages pronounced in Sarajevo, - where the wounds of ethnic and religious conflicts that tortured the heart of Europe at the end of last century have not yet healed – were confirmation that Pope Francis’ aim is not to obtain political support or form “Holy Alliances” with the world’s powers, but to make a disinterested contribution to preventing the causes of conflict. At the same time, he is warding off all attempts to “conceal” power-hungry interests with ideologies based on ethnic and religious factors. These interests, starting with arms trafficking (something Francis constantly returns to in his speeches) and the fight for control over natural resources, are the causes of conflict.Being a Jesuit, the Pope is well aware that Russia – like China – are countries that have played key roles throughout history and cannot be cut out of any sincere attempt at shared leadership in the context of globalisation. Given his evangelical approach to the world’s problems, a visit to Moscow could be on the cards and in fact the Pope himself expressed his interest in a potential visit right from the very first months of his pontificate. Russian diplomat, Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s advisor, has stated that during their meeting, the Pope and the Russian leader “will discuss possible further contact” but he added that he does not know whether Putin will invite the Pope to Moscow and that this “is not only something that involves the State” but the Russian Orthodox Church as well.Paradoxically, it is some of the high ranking figures of the Patriarchate of Moscow that are most concerned about Pope Francis’ popularity among Russians too. The comment made by the Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev at the last Synod on the family left a terrible impression in the Vatican. He is not the Patriarch but the Patriarchate of Moscow’s “foreign affairs minister”. On that occasion, Hilarion took advantage of the hospitality offered to him, launching a full-fledged attack on the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which was totally out of place. And it is a known fact that the Patriarchate of Moscow has so far been reluctant to proceed quickly along the ecumenical path from a theological point of view – here, the theologians of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople play a dominant role – preferring the approach of an “alliance” between Churches in defence of moral values.The current Successor of Peter has shown a concrete willingness to “learn” about the ecclesiology of his Orthodox brothers. But so far, in the Orthodox world, the Russian Church appears to be the one that is least ready to seize the moment and to let go of the ghosts of the past and put an end to their calculations as officials of the sacred.

Many connected the two things, interpreting his homily almost as the anticipation of a negative pronouncement on the phenomenon which began in Herzegovina in 1981 and has not yet reached a conclusion.This is not the first time Francis has expressed himself in these terms. On 13 November 2013, during a sermon in St. Martha’s House, he criticised the spirit of curiosity, which impels us to want to feel that “the Lord is here or rather there, or leads us to say: “But I know a visionary, who receives letters from Our Lady, messages from Our Lady”. “But, look, Our Lady is the Mother of everyone! And she loves all of us. She is not a postmaster, sending messages every day,” the Pope added. Even then, the words he pronounced at mass were linked to Medjugorje, even though he could also have been referring to other phenomena of this kind and especially to the attitude of those who transform faith into insane curiosity.The Medjugorje apparitions, initially involved a group of children and continued under the form of private apparitions that still continue today, at specific times and on a daily basis. The Holy See does not want seers to take part in public demonstrations trumpeting the authenticity of the apparitions as a definite, even mentioning the times in advertising campaigns.Of the six initial seers, three confirm that they still see the Virgin Mary at the same time in the afternoon, wherever they are; one of them witnesses an apparition every 2nd day of the month, while the latter two see one apparition a year.It is hard to imagine that the Pope intended to anticipate the decision on Medjugorje with his words in the St. Martha House mass. After the exhaustive and balanced work carried out by the commission of experts and theologians, which Benedict XVI decided to set up, appointing Cardinal Camillo Ruini as head, the case passed into the hands of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Congregation will be discussing it in the coming days. The outcome will then be presented to Francis.When Ruini’s report was delivered to the Pope in January 2014, the Commission approved the first apparitions witnessed in the summer of 1981 but expressed its doubts over the apparitions which followed and have not yet come to an end, even though no proof was found of trickery or deceit. Similarly, in the case of the Fatima apparitions of 1917, the Church approved these but not those which followed, along with the revelations that Sister Lucia dos Santos has continued to have.The issue of the healing of millions of pilgrims that go to pray in Medjugorje every year, in the parish chapel, which according to many could become a shrine under the direct tutelage of the Holy See, is completely different and separate from the pronouncement on the supernatural aspect of the event. Pastoral care for faithful is one of the aspects Pope Francis holds closest to his heart, having always valued popular devotion as an archbishop in Argentina.We must not forget how varied the world of private revelations is, with so-called seers and pseudo-seers and the web has blown up these phenomena. Here is an example that occurred recently: on 9 May, during the course of a meeting that lasted all but a few minutes, at the end of the rosary prayer in the Vatican Gardens, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was handed a sizable book with a dark red coloured cover and a shell-shaped seal. Neither the Pope Emeritus, not his personal secretary, Archbishop Georg Gänswein knew what it was about. They had no knowledge of the contents, nor did they know the identity of the two envoys sent to represent “seer” Franca Miscio, better known as “Conchiglia”, founder of an international movement whose model figures are Guadalupe and Juan Diego.The “messages” received from the fake seer are easy to find online. Conchiglia presents herself as a prophetess of our time and fills pages and pages with words that she assures come directly from God, Jesus and Mary. One of the strangest “revelations” she makes is an unshakable belief that aliens exist and that “alien DNA” has mixed with “Terrestrian” DNA so that there are now “alien beings” ruling the world.The Vatican is described in the “prophesies” as den of all evils: “The Vatican is the centre of the global power that wants to create a single global religion uniting all false religions … it is the den of the seven deadly sins and other kinds of vileness.” In addition, Conchiglia deifies the figure of Mary.The false seer wrote a great deal about Benedict XVI’s resignation. She claims his resignation resulted from the workings of international masonry and that Ratzinger is apparently still the real and legitimate Pope, while Francis, whom she defines as a “wicked man seated at the Throne of Peter”, is an “imposter”, an anti-Pope, a representative of the Anti-Christ. These comments speak for themselves.Various figures have recently warned against Conchiglia’s “messages”, including the Bishop of Jesi (Italy), Gerardo Rocconi who met her in person and the Bishop of Senigallia (Italy), Giuseppe Orlandoni, who has repeatedly described the words of the false seer as “objectively heretical and against the doctrine of the Church”. Conchiglia’s movement has published the images of the meeting with the Pope Emeritus on her website, making them stand out and presenting him almost as a guarantee seal for the messages contained in the book. But Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Prefect of the Papal Household and personal secretary to Benedict XVI clarified what happened in a statement to Vatican Insider.Answering a series of questions put to him by Vatican Insider: “A certain Mr. Mimmo Rocco who presented himself as chief superintendent of the Italian Carabinieri, had asked some time ago, along with many others, to meet the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. He was granted a brief meeting after the rosary. There were two of them, him and one other person. They didn’t know each other. During the meeting, they presented Benedict XVI with a book, as shown in a series of photos published on the website. We had no knowledge of the content. The meeting only lasted a few minutes.”“When I got home,” Gänswein continued, “I looked at the book and so did Benedict XVI later on. We were surprised and shocked because we noticed straight away that the book contained some “private revelations”. It didn’t take long to work out that the whole thing was strange and incredible to say the least. The Pope Emeritus asked me to send the book to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith which is competent in this field, immediately.”“We didn’t think anything of the meeting,” Mgr. Gänswein concluded. “There are many people around who call themselves “seers”… We had no idea that the book contained those comments. Naturally, there is no support for the “seer” or the contents of the book in any way. Had Benedict XVI known that he was going to be given a collection of messages of this kind, he would never have agreed to the meeting”.

Rome-Pope Francis has appointed Mgr. Heiner Koch as the new Archbishop of Berlin, the Vatican informs in a statement. Mgr. Koch, from the German city of Düsseldorf, is 64 years old, he was Secretary General of the organising committee for the 2002 World Youth Day (WYD) in Cologne and has, until now, occupied the position of Bishop of Dresden.Italian Catholic news blog Il Sismografo recalls that Koch completed his theological studies in Bonn. He was ordained a priest on 13 June 1980 and joined the Archdiocese of Cologne. In 1989 he was nominated Rector of the Mariä Himmelfahrt in Cologne and in 1992 became the Director of the Pastoral Office of the archiepiscopal Curia.In 1996 he was granted the title Honorary Prelate of His Holiness and in 1998 he was nominated Canon of the Metropolitan Chapter of Cologne. Since 2002 he has also served as Pro-Vicar General and Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the XX World Youth Day in Cologne.On 17 March 2006 he was elected Titular Bishop of Ros Cré and Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Cologne, receiving episcopal ordination on May 7th.On 18 January 2013 he was transferred to the residential home of Dresden-Meiβen.

Seoul (AFP) - South Korean President Park Geun-Hye has postponed a planned trip to the United States, her spokesman said Wednesday, amid growing public alarm at the MERS outbreak which has now claimed nine lives.The decision to delay the June 14-18 visit came after Park's administration came under fire for what critics say has been an inadequate response to the crisis."President Park decided to postpone the US trip in order to help end the outbreak of MERS and take care of public safety," her senior press secretary Kim Sung-Woo told reporters."We asked for understanding from the US government and both nations agreed to reschedule the trip at the earliest convenience."Two new deaths and 13 new cases were confirmed on Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths to nine and the number of infections to 108 in the worst outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outside Saudi Arabia.The first infected patient was diagnosed on May 20 after a trip to Saudi Arabia.The 68-year-old man spread the virus, visiting four medical facilities and infecting other patients and health care workers.Since then, nearly 3,500 people who were exposed to infected people have been placed under quarantine of varying strictness.The outbreak has also triggered alarm elsewhere in Asia.A woman was rushed to a Hong Kong hospital Wednesday on suspicion she had contracted MERS, after returning from a trip to South Korea.Hong Kong had previously quarantined 19 people as a precaution against MERS and had also isolated suspected cases which turned out to be false alarms.Park's approval ratings have taken a dive as critics accused her administration and health officials of responding too slowly to the crisis.A survey by polling agency Realmeter showed on Wednesday that more than half of South Koreans opposed her planned trip to the US, a major ally.The two latest fatalities were a 75-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man.They contracted the virus at Samsung Medical Centre, a major hospital in Seoul.It has seen 47 infections, the highest number at any single health facility, as well as 10 of the 13 new patients reported Wednesday.The three other new victims had their diagnoses confirmed at three different hospitals, two in the central city of Daejeon and one near a southern suburb of Seoul.

All the infections, however, were limited to hospitals.The nine dead had pre-existing health conditions, the health ministry said, adding four patients so far have recovered and were released from hospital.As the number of cases and deaths has risen and public alarm grew, nearly 2,500 schools -- mostly in Seoul and surrounding Gyeonggi province -- were closed Wednesday, up 300 from the previous day.Local businesses including shopping malls, movie theatres and theme parks reported a sharp drop in business as people shunned crowded public venues.Acting Prime Minister Choi Kyung-Hwan called for cooperation from the public in fighting the virus and promised more support for thousands quarantined at home."Please refrain from excessive responses such as avoiding shopping trips... and continue your normal daily activities," he said. In the case of those quarantined at home, he promised to provide "all possible support" such as cash aid and essential supplies.Police said they were investigating eight people for spreading false rumours involving hospitals, or for passing on patient information without consent.On Wednesday health officials also launched nationwide screening of sick persons with pneumonia, since MERS patients often develop pneumonia.The virus is considered a deadlier but less infectious cousin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which killed hundreds of people when it appeared in Asia in 2003.There is no vaccine or cure for MERS which, according to World Health Organization (WHO) data, has a fatality rate of around 35 percent.After a joint investigation with local experts, a WHO team said Wednesday that the pattern of the outbreak in South Korea is probably similar to the previous ones at Middle East healthcare facilities."
