THE United States has been narrowly saved from lethal terrorist plots in recent years — or so it has seemed. A would-be suicide bomber was intercepted on his way to the Capitol; a scheme to bomb synagogues and shoot Stinger missiles at military aircraft was developed by men in Newburgh, N.Y.; and a fanciful idea to fly explosive-laden model planes into the Pentagon and the Capitol was hatched in Massachusetts.But all these dramas were facilitated by the F.B.I., whose undercover agents and informers posed as terrorists offering a dummy missile, fake C-4 explosives, a disarmed suicide vest and rudimentary training. Suspects naïvely played their parts until they were arrested.When an Oregon college student, Mohamed Osman Mohamud, thought of using a car bomb to attack a festive Christmas-tree lighting ceremony in Portland, the F.B.I. provided a van loaded with six 55-gallon drums of “inert material,” harmless blasting caps, a detonator cord and a gallon of diesel fuel to make the van smell flammable. An undercover F.B.I. agent even did the driving, with Mr. Mohamud in the passenger seat. To trigger the bomb the student punched a number into a cellphone and got no boom, only a bust.This is legal, but is it legitimate? Without the F.B.I., would the culprits commit violence on their own? Is cultivating potential terrorists the best use of the manpower designed to find the real ones? Judging by their official answers, the F.B.I. and the Justice Department are sure of themselves — too sure, perhaps.Carefully orchestrated sting operations usually hold up in court. Defendants invariably claim entrapment and almost always lose, because the law requires that they show no predisposition to commit the crime, even when induced by government agents. To underscore their predisposition, many suspects are “warned about the seriousness of their plots and given opportunities to back out,” said Dean Boyd, a Justice Department spokesman. But not always, recorded conversations show. Sometimes they are coaxed to continue.Undercover operations, long practiced by the F.B.I., have become a mainstay of counterterrorism, and they have changed in response to the post-9/11 focus on prevention. “Prior to 9/11 it would be very unusual for the F.B.I. to present a crime opportunity that wasn’t in the scope of the activities that a person was already involved in,” said Mike German of the American Civil Liberties Union, a lawyer and former F.B.I. agent who infiltrated white supremacist groups. An alleged drug dealer would be set up to sell drugs to an undercover agent, an arms trafficker to sell weapons. That still happens routinely, but less so in counterterrorism, and for good reason.“There isn’t a business of terrorism in the United States, thank God,” a former federal prosecutor, David Raskin, explained.“You’re not going to be able to go to a street corner and find somebody who’s already blown something up,” he said. Therefore, the usual goal is not “to find somebody who’s already engaged in terrorism but find somebody who would jump at the opportunity if a real terrorist showed up in town.”
And that’s the gray area. Who is susceptible? Anyone who plays along with the agents, apparently. Once the snare is set, law enforcement sees no choice. “Ignoring such threats is not an option,” Mr. Boyd argued, “given the possibility that the suspect could act alone at any time or find someone else willing to help him.”Typically, the stings initially target suspects for pure speech — comments to an informer outside a mosque, angry postings on Web sites, e-mails with radicals overseas — then woo them into relationships with informers, who are often convicted felons working in exchange for leniency, or with F.B.I. agents posing as members of Al Qaeda or other groups.Some targets have previous involvement in more than idle talk: for example, Waad Ramadan Alwan, an Iraqi in Kentucky, whose fingerprints were found on an unexploded roadside bomb near Bayji, Iraq, and Raja Khan of Chicago, who had sent funds to an Al Qaeda leader in Pakistan.But others seem ambivalent, incompetent and adrift, like hapless wannabes looking for a cause that the informer or undercover agent skillfully helps them find. Take the Stinger missile defendant James Cromitie, a low-level drug dealer with a criminal record that included no violence or hate crime, despite his rants against Jews. “He was searching for answers within his Islamic faith,” said his lawyer, Clinton W. Calhoun III, who has appealed his conviction. “And this informant, I think, twisted that search in a really pretty awful way, sort of misdirected Cromitie in his search and turned him towards violence.”THE informer, Shahed Hussain, had been charged with fraud, but avoided prison and deportation by working undercover in another investigation. He was being paid by the F.B.I. to pose as a wealthy Pakistani with ties to Jaish-e-Mohammed, a terrorist group that Mr. Cromitie apparently had never heard of before they met by chance in the parking lot of a mosque.“Brother, did you ever try to do anything for the cause of Islam?” Mr. Hussain asked at one point.“O.K., brother,” Mr. Cromitie replied warily, “where you going with this, brother?”Two days later, the informer told him, “Allah has more work for you to do,” and added, “Revelation is going to come in your dreams that you have to do this thing, O.K.?” About 15 minutes later, Mr. Hussain proposed the idea of using missiles, saying he could get them in a container from China. Mr. Cromitie laughed.Reading hundreds of pages of transcripts of the recorded conversations is like looking at the inkblots of a Rorschach test. Patterns of willingness and hesitation overlap and merge. “I don’t want anyone to get hurt,” Mr. Cromitie said, and then explained that he meant women and children. “I don’t care if it’s a whole synagogue of men.” It took 11 months of meandering discussion and a promise of $250,000 to lead him, with three co-conspirators he recruited, to plant fake bombs at two Riverdale synagogues.“Only the government could have made a ‘terrorist’ out of Mr. Cromitie, whose buffoonery is positively Shakespearean in its scope,” said Judge Colleen McMahon, sentencing him to 25 years. She branded it a “fantasy terror operation” but called his attempt “beyond despicable” and rejected his claim of entrapment.The judge’s statement was unusual, but Mr. Cromitie’s characteristics were not. His incompetence and ambivalence could be found among other aspiring terrorists whose grandiose plans were nurtured by law enforcement. They included men who wanted to attack fuel lines at Kennedy International Airport; destroy the Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in Chicago; carry out a suicide bombing near Tampa Bay, Fla., and bomb subways in New York and Washington. Of the 22 most frightening plans for attacks since 9/11 on American soil, 14 were developed in sting operations.Another New York City subway plot, which recently went to trial, needed no help from government. Nor did a bombing attempt in Times Square, the abortive underwear bombing in a jetliner over Detroit, a planned attack on Fort Dix, N.J., and several smaller efforts. Some threats are real, others less so. In terrorism, it’s not easy to tell the difference.David K. (CNN)The deadliest jihadist terrorist attack in Europe in a decade was inspired and perhaps even was instigated by an American citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki, who died in a CIA drone strike in Yemen in 2011.
One of the Kouachi brothers, who mounted the attack last week on the Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, cited al-Awlaki as his operational commander. Before he died on Friday, one of the brothers told a French news network, "I was sent, me, Cherif Kouachi, by al Qaeda in Yemen. I went there and Sheikh Anwar al-Awlaki financed my trip."U.S. officials say that the other Kouachi brother, Said, spent several months in Yemen in 2011, receiving training from al Qaeda.Al-Awlaki was both the instigator of the al Qaeda's affiliate in Yemen's plots to attack the West and also one of the most influential clerics in the world of militant Islam. Indeed, al-Awlaki is the key influence behind many of the major terrorist attacks and plots of the past half decade in the West, and he has continued to retain that influence even after President Barack Obama made the decision five years ago to kill him with a drone strike.Awlaki is the key influence behind many of the major terrorist attacks and plots of the past half decade in the West.Al-Awlaki was an influence on the two Tsarnaev brothers, who are alleged to have killed three people at the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.He also influenced Carlos Bledsoe, who shot up an Army recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas, killing an American soldier in 2009. After the attacks, Bledsoe said his spiritual inspiration was al-Awlaki. Major Nidal Hasan killed 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009 after sending 18 emails to al-Awlaki in Yemen, a correspondence that was known to the FBI. Al-Awlaki did not direct this attack, but he was the key inspiration for Hasan.The "underwear bomber" Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab was directed by al-Awlaki to bring down an American jet over an American city in the fall of 2009. In the days following Abdul Mutallab's Christmas Day 2009 botched attack to bring down Northwest Flight 253 over Detroit with a bomb concealed in his underwear, it became clear from AbdulMuttalab's FBI interrogations that it was al-Awlaki who had ordered the young Nigerian man to carry out the operation.
Al-Awlaki's influence
What made al-Awlaki so influential is that, unlike a number of leaders of al Qaeda such as Osama bin Laden, he was a cleric, so he could present himself as a leading religious figure. Second, because al-Awlaki had spent much of his adult life in the States, he communicated with his followers in colloquial, accessible American English.At one point, he said that, "Jihad is becoming as American as apple pie." Third, his sermons were made widely available on YouTube and, indeed they continue to be available.Anwar al-Awlaki was a U.S. citizen by virtue of his birth in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 1971 while his Yemeni father was studying at New Mexico State University. Six years after al-Awlaki was born, his family moved back to Yemen, but he returned to the States for college and remained there for much of his adult life.As an undergrad, he attended Colorado State to study engineering.Al-Awlaki also started attending San Diego State, where he earned a master's degree in education. In San Diego, al-Awlaki encountered two men who, together with their 17 comrades, would transform American history. They were Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi.The CIA was tracking Mihdhar and Hazmi from the time that they attended an al Qaeda summit in Malaysia on January 5, 2000. Ten days after the meeting in Malaysia, on January 15, 2000, they flew into Los Angeles. They also started spending time with al-Awlaki. Indeed, al-Awlaki wrote a check to Hazmi for $175 three months before the 9/11 attacks.After the attacks on New York and Washington, these suspicious contacts made al-Awlaki the subject of intense FBI interest. The 9/11 attacks happened on a Tuesday. By Saturday, the FBI was knocking on al-Awlaki's door. FBI agents also met with al-Awlaki on three other occasions, and they secretly trailed his white Dodge Caravan for many weeks afterwards.At the time, the FBI couldn't determine whether al-Awlaki was someone who just had happened to encounter a number of nefarious individuals on a regular basis in the years before 9/11 or whether there was something more sinister about the cleric's social circle. By early spring 2002, al-Awlaki was studying in a doctoral program at George Washington University in Washington, but he decided to leave the country.Al-Awlaki arrived in London in March 2002 and found a more congenial environment than in the States. The city was sometimes referred to as "Londonistan" because of the relatively large number of Islamist militants living there and permissive British laws regarding free speech.
Imprisonment in Yemen
After two years in London, al-Awlaki traveled back to Yemen. In 2006, he was thrown into a Yemeni jail. Al-Awlaki characterized this as the result of his intervention into one of Yemen's numerous, and often deadly, tribal disputes. The U.S. government asserted that his imprisonment, in fact, came after al-Awlaki became involved in an al Qaeda plot to kidnap a U.S. official.During this period, the FBI's interest in al-Awlaki remained high, and FBI agents interrogated the cleric while he was in the Yemeni prison. In December 2007, al-Awlaki was released. Those who knew al-Awlaki found him to have emerged hardened after his time in jail.By the time al-Awlaki was released, he was becoming the key cleric in the English-speaking world of radical Islam, one that militants were turning too for answers. Osama bin Laden was still the overall inspirational head of the al Qaeda network, but he remained inaccessible in his hideout in Pakistan, whereas for militants in the West, you could chat with al-Awlaki though his website and in colloquial English to boot.Of the some 250 individuals charged or convicted of involvement of some kind of jihadist terrorist activity in the United States following the 9/11 attacks, an astonishing 62 were found to have al-Awlaki's writings or sermons in their possession or cited him as an influence and a further six corresponded with him or traveled to Yemen to meet with him, according to a count by New America.
The drone debate
Following the Christmas Day plot, al-Awlaki's role as the leader of al Qaeda in Yemen's plans to target the United States came into focus. Senior White House officials began debating whether they should target him for death. Al-Awlaki was no longer merely the cleric who inspired militants in the West that they had previously pegged him for.It was a momentous debate. Never before had a president and his advisers seriously contemplated authorizing the assassination of an American citizen.President Obama and a small team of senior national security officials were in the unusual position of acting as al-Awlaki's jury, judges and de facto executioners.A few days after the Christmas Day plot, Obama gave his verbal approval to target al-Awlaki for death. While the President had agonized over some of the decisions to target militants for death, the decision to kill al-Awlaki was an easy one, according to a senior Obama administration official who spoke to me about it. It underlined how obsessed the group, led by al-Awlaki, was about the issue of those who had purportedly "defamed" Islam.The debut of Inspire featured a "hit list" that included Flemming Rose and Kurt Westergaard, the editor and cartoonist who were responsible for a set of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that were published in Denmark in 2005 in the Jyllands-Posten newspaper.Also on the hit list was Molly Norris, a cartoonist living in Seattle who had similarly initiated an "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" in 2010.Inspire urged that they all should be killed and featured an essay by al-Awlaki who added his clerical imprimatur to this notion, saying that those who denigrated the Prophet are "insulting of over a billion Muslims worldwide. ... We will fight for him, we will instigate, we will bomb and we will assassinate."Al-Awlaki also released on the Internet an hourlong sermon, "The Dust Will Never Settle Down." Delivered in colloquial American English, it urged the assassination of anyone who "defamed" the Prophet Mohammed. In the lecture, al-Awlaki said, "Harming Allah and his Messenger is a reason to encourage Muslims to kill whoever does that."
A good lead on al-Awlaki
On May 5, 2011, just three days after bin Laden was killed in a U.S. Navy SEAL raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan, Obama was briefed by his national security team that there was a good lead on al-Awlaki's whereabouts in Yemen.Drones tracking al-Awlaki and his associates flew out of bases in east Africa and Saudi Arabia as well as from U.S. Navy ships cruising in the Arabian Sea. On the evening of May 5, special operations planners sent Predator drones, Harrier jets and an aircraft to follow al-Awlaki ,who was riding in a pickup across the deserts of Shabwah in southern Yemen.Al-Awlaki's truck was driving fast and the flight crews tracking the vehicle could not keep their laser-guided weapons locked on the fast-moving target.The next good intelligence about al-Awlaki's location came in September. Now the hunt for the elusive Yemeni-American cleric centered on the governorate of Al Jawf on Yemen's northern border with Saudi Arabia.An al Qaeda operative in Yemeni custody said that al-Awlaki was hiding in a house in the town of Khashef. Al-Awlaki made an uncharacteristic mistake; instead of changing his hideout location often, he remained in the house in Khashef for two weeks. The cleric was living in a location where he was surrounded by children, which no doubt made him think that there was a lower risk that the United States would take a shot at him with a drone.On the morning of Friday, September 30, 2011, al-Awlaki had just finished breakfast. He and his companions got into some vehicles, and CIA drones soon locked on to them, shooting missiles that killed al-Awlaki at 9:55 a.m. Also killed along with him was Samir Khan, another American citizen who had joined al Qaeda in Yemen.Killing the man did not kill his ideas or his influence. It seems, if anything, only to have magnified them among Islamist militants living in the West. Some two dozen militants indicted in the States since al-Awlaki's death have cited his influence or possessed his propaganda, according to a count by New America. For instance, Quazi Nafis, a 21-year old Bangladeshi on a student visa, was arrested in 2012 for plotting to bomb the New York Federal Reserve. So yes – it will be all about further moves towards the integration of Eurasia as the US is progressively squeezed out of Eurasia. We will see a complex geostrategic interplay progressively undermining the hegemony of the US dollar as a reserve currency and, most of all, the petrodollar.For all the immense challenges the Chinese face, all over Beijing it’s easy to detect unmistakable signs of a self-assured, self- confident, fully emerged commercial superpower. President Xi Jinping and the current leadership will keep investing heavily in the urbanization drive and the fight against corruption, including at the highest levels of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Internationally, the Chinese will accelerate their overwhelming push for new ‘Silk Roads’ – both overland and maritime – which will underpin the long-term Chinese master strategy of unifying Eurasia with trade and commerce.Global oil prices are bound to remain low. All bets are off on whether a nuclear deal will be reached by this summer between Iran and the P5+1. If sanctions (actually economic war) against Iran remain and continue to seriously hurt its economy, Tehran’s reaction will be firm, and will include even more integration with Asia, not the West.Washington is well-aware that a comprehensive deal with Iran cannot be reached without Russia’s help. That would be the Obama administration’s sole – and I repeat – sole foreign policy success. A return to the “Bomb Iran” hysteria would only suit the proverbial usual (neo-con) suspects. Still, by no accident, both Iran and Russia are now subject to Western sanctions. No matter how it was engineered, the fact that stands is that the current financial/ strategic oil price collapse is a direct attack against (who else?) Iran and Russia.
That derivative war
Now let’s take a look at Russian fundamentals. Russia’s government debt totals only 13.4% of its GDP. Its budget deficit in relation to GDP is only 0.5%. If we assume a US GDP of $16.8 trillion (the figure for 2013), the US budget deficit totals 4% of GDP, versus 0.5% for Russia. The Fed is essentially a private corporation owned by regional US private banks, although it passes itself off as a state institution. US publicly held debt is equal to a whopping 74% of GDP in fiscal year 2014. Russia’s is only 13.4%.The declaration of economic war by the US and EU on Russia – via the run on the ruble and the oil derivative attack – was essentially a derivatives racket. Derivatives – in theory – may be multiplied to infinity. Derivative operators attacked both the ruble and oil prices in order to destroy the Russian economy. The problem is, the Russian economy is more soundly financed than America’s.Considering that this swift move was conceived as a checkmate, Moscow’s defensive strategy was not that bad. On the key energy front, the problem remains the West’s – not Russia’s. If the EU does not buy what Gazprom has to offer, it will collapse.Moscow’s key mistake was to allow Russia’s domestic industry to be financed by external, dollar-denominated debt. Talk about a monster debt trap which can be easily manipulated by the West. The first step for Moscow should be to closely supervise its banks. Russian companies should borrow domestically and move to sell their assets abroad. Moscow should also consider implementing a system of currency controls so the basic interest rate can be brought down quickly.And don’t forget that Russia can always deploy a moratorium on debt and interest, affecting over $600 billion. That would shake the entire world’s banking system to the core. Talk about an undisguised “message” forcing the US/EU economic warfare to dissolve.Russia does not need to import any raw materials. Russia can easily reverse-engineer virtually any imported technology if it needs to. Most of all, Russia can generate — from the sale of raw materials – enough credit in US dollars or euros. Russia’s sale of its energy wealth — or sophisticated military gear — may decline. However, they will bring in the same amount of rubles — as the ruble has also declined. Replacing imports with domestic Russian manufacturing makes total sense. There will be an inevitable “adjustment” phase – but that won’t take long. German car manufacturers, for instance, can no longer sell their cars in Russia due to the ruble’s decline. This means they will have to relocate their factories to Russia. If they don’t, Asia – from South Korea to China — will blow them out of the market.
Bear and dragon on the prowl
The EU’s declaration of economic war against Russia makes no sense whatsoever. Russia controls, directly or indirectly, most of the oil and natural gas between Russia and China: roughly 25% of the world’s supply. The Middle East is bound to remain a mess. Africa is unstable. The EU is doing everything it can to cut itself off from its most stable supply of hydrocarbons, prompting Moscow to redirect energy to China and the rest of Asia. What a gift for Beijing – as it minimizes the alarm about the US Navy playing with “containment” across the high seas.Still, an unspoken axiom in Beijing is that the Chinese remain extremely worried about an Empire of Chaos losing more and more control, and dictating the stormy terms of the relationship between the EU and Russia. The bottom line is that Beijing would never allow itself to be in a position where the US could interfere with China’s energy imports – as was the case with Japan in July 1941 when the US declared war by imposing an oil embargo, cutting off 92% of Japanese oil imports.Everyone knows a key plank of China’s spectacular surge in industrial power was the requirement for manufacturers to produce in China. If Russia did the same, its economy would be growing at a rate of over 5% per year in no time. It could grow even more if bank credit was tied only to productive investment.Now imagine Russia and China jointly investing in a new gold, oil and natural resource-backed monetary union as a crucial alternative to the failed debt “democracy” model pushed by the Masters of the Universe on Wall Street, the Western central bank cartel, and neoliberal politicians. They would be showing the Global South that financing prosperity and improved standards of living by saddling future generations with debt was never meant to work in the first place.Until then, a storm will be threatening our very lives – today and tomorrow. The Masters of the Universe/Washington combo won’t give up their strategy to make Russia a pariah state cut off from trade, the transfer of funds, banking and Western credit markets and thus prone to regime change.Further on down the road, if all goes according to plan, their target will be (who else) China. And Beijing knows it. Meanwhile, expect a few bombshells to shake the EU to its foundations. Time may be running out – but for the EU, not Russia. Still, the overall trend won’t be altered; the Empire of Chaos is slowly but surely being squeezed out of Eurasia.

He has all children in Bethlehem killed. “We think immediately of Pakistan, where a month ago, more than a hundred children were slaughtered with unspeakable brutality,” Francis said assuring victims’ families of his prayers.Francis linked the “culture of rejection” which spawns “violence and death” to “the events reported daily in the news, not least the tragic slayings which took place in Paris a few days ago.” People are seen “as objects” and “losing their freedom, people become enslaved, whether to the latest fads, or to power, money, or even deviant forms of religion”. Speaking about the consequences of this mentality, Francis talked about “a true world war fought piecemeal” in various parts of the world, starting “with nearby Ukraine, which has become a dramatic theatre of combat.” “It is my hope that through dialogue the efforts presently being made to end the hostilities will be consolidated, and that the parties involved will embark as quickly as possible, in a renewed spirit of respect for international law, upon the path of mutual trust and fraternal reconciliation.”Francis then spoke about the Middle East and the intensity of the prayer meeting with Peres and Abu Mazen in the Vatican. He said he that negotiations between the two parties will once more resume, for the sake of ending violence and reaching a solution which can enable Palestinians and Israelis alike to live at last in peace within clearly established and internationally recognized borders, thus implementing the “two state solution”.” He also mentioned the other conflicts in the region which have had “chilling repercussions, due also to the spread of fundamentalist terrorism in Syria and in Iraq. This phenomenon is a consequence of the throwaway culture being applied to God. THE United States has been narrowly saved from lethal terrorist plots in recent years — or so it has seemed. A would-be suicide bomber was intercepted on his way to the Capitol; a scheme to bomb synagogues and shoot Stinger missiles at military aircraft was developed by men in Newburgh, N.Y.; and a fanciful idea to fly explosive-laden model planes into the Pentagon and the Capitol was hatched in Massachusetts.But all these dramas were facilitated by the F.B.I., whose undercover agents and informers posed as terrorists offering a dummy missile, fake C-4 explosives, a disarmed suicide vest and rudimentary training. Suspects naïvely played their parts until they were arrested.When an Oregon college student, Mohamed Osman Mohamud, thought of using a car bomb to attack a festive Christmas-tree lighting ceremony in Portland, the F.B.I. provided a van loaded with six 55-gallon drums of “inert material,” harmless blasting caps, a detonator cord and a gallon of diesel fuel to make the van smell flammable. An undercover F.B.I. agent even did the driving, with Mr. Mohamud in the passenger seat. To trigger the bomb the student punched a number into a cellphone and got no boom, only a bust.This is legal, but is it legitimate? Without the F.B.I., would the culprits commit violence on their own? Is cultivating potential terrorists the best use of the manpower designed to find the real ones? Judging by their official answers, the F.B.I. and the Justice Department are sure of themselves — too sure, perhaps.Carefully orchestrated sting operations usually hold up in court. Defendants invariably claim entrapment and almost always lose, because the law requires that they show no predisposition to commit the crime, even when induced by government agents. To underscore their predisposition, many suspects are “warned about the seriousness of their plots and given opportunities to back out,” said Dean Boyd, a Justice Department spokesman. But not always, recorded conversations show. Sometimes they are coaxed to continue.Undercover operations, long practiced by the F.B.I., have become a mainstay of counterterrorism, and they have changed in response to the post-9/11 focus on prevention. “Prior to 9/11 it would be very unusual for the F.B.I. to present a crime opportunity that wasn’t in the scope of the activities that a person was already involved in,” said Mike German of the American Civil Liberties Union, a lawyer and former F.B.I. agent who infiltrated white supremacist groups. An alleged drug dealer would be set up to sell drugs to an undercover agent, an arms trafficker to sell weapons. That still happens routinely, but less so in counterterrorism, and for good reason.“There isn’t a business of terrorism in the United States, thank God,” a former federal prosecutor, David Raskin, explained.“You’re not going to be able to go to a street corner and find somebody who’s already blown something up,” he said. Therefore, the usual goal is not “to find somebody who’s already engaged in terrorism but find somebody who would jump at the opportunity if a real terrorist showed up in town.”
And that’s the gray area. Who is susceptible? Anyone who plays along with the agents, apparently. Once the snare is set, law enforcement sees no choice. “Ignoring such threats is not an option,” Mr. Boyd argued, “given the possibility that the suspect could act alone at any time or find someone else willing to help him.”Typically, the stings initially target suspects for pure speech — comments to an informer outside a mosque, angry postings on Web sites, e-mails with radicals overseas — then woo them into relationships with informers, who are often convicted felons working in exchange for leniency, or with F.B.I. agents posing as members of Al Qaeda or other groups.Some targets have previous involvement in more than idle talk: for example, Waad Ramadan Alwan, an Iraqi in Kentucky, whose fingerprints were found on an unexploded roadside bomb near Bayji, Iraq, and Raja Khan of Chicago, who had sent funds to an Al Qaeda leader in Pakistan.But others seem ambivalent, incompetent and adrift, like hapless wannabes looking for a cause that the informer or undercover agent skillfully helps them find. Take the Stinger missile defendant James Cromitie, a low-level drug dealer with a criminal record that included no violence or hate crime, despite his rants against Jews. “He was searching for answers within his Islamic faith,” said his lawyer, Clinton W. Calhoun III, who has appealed his conviction. “And this informant, I think, twisted that search in a really pretty awful way, sort of misdirected Cromitie in his search and turned him towards violence.”THE informer, Shahed Hussain, had been charged with fraud, but avoided prison and deportation by working undercover in another investigation. He was being paid by the F.B.I. to pose as a wealthy Pakistani with ties to Jaish-e-Mohammed, a terrorist group that Mr. Cromitie apparently had never heard of before they met by chance in the parking lot of a mosque.“Brother, did you ever try to do anything for the cause of Islam?” Mr. Hussain asked at one point.“O.K., brother,” Mr. Cromitie replied warily, “where you going with this, brother?”Two days later, the informer told him, “Allah has more work for you to do,” and added, “Revelation is going to come in your dreams that you have to do this thing, O.K.?” About 15 minutes later, Mr. Hussain proposed the idea of using missiles, saying he could get them in a container from China. Mr. Cromitie laughed.Reading hundreds of pages of transcripts of the recorded conversations is like looking at the inkblots of a Rorschach test. Patterns of willingness and hesitation overlap and merge. “I don’t want anyone to get hurt,” Mr. Cromitie said, and then explained that he meant women and children. “I don’t care if it’s a whole synagogue of men.” It took 11 months of meandering discussion and a promise of $250,000 to lead him, with three co-conspirators he recruited, to plant fake bombs at two Riverdale synagogues.“Only the government could have made a ‘terrorist’ out of Mr. Cromitie, whose buffoonery is positively Shakespearean in its scope,” said Judge Colleen McMahon, sentencing him to 25 years. She branded it a “fantasy terror operation” but called his attempt “beyond despicable” and rejected his claim of entrapment.The judge’s statement was unusual, but Mr. Cromitie’s characteristics were not. His incompetence and ambivalence could be found among other aspiring terrorists whose grandiose plans were nurtured by law enforcement. They included men who wanted to attack fuel lines at Kennedy International Airport; destroy the Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in Chicago; carry out a suicide bombing near Tampa Bay, Fla., and bomb subways in New York and Washington. Of the 22 most frightening plans for attacks since 9/11 on American soil, 14 were developed in sting operations.Another New York City subway plot, which recently went to trial, needed no help from government. Nor did a bombing attempt in Times Square, the abortive underwear bombing in a jetliner over Detroit, a planned attack on Fort Dix, N.J., and several smaller efforts. Some threats are real, others less so. In terrorism, it’s not easy to tell the difference.David K. (CNN)The deadliest jihadist terrorist attack in Europe in a decade was inspired and perhaps even was instigated by an American citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki, who died in a CIA drone strike in Yemen in 2011.
One of the Kouachi brothers, who mounted the attack last week on the Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, cited al-Awlaki as his operational commander. Before he died on Friday, one of the brothers told a French news network, "I was sent, me, Cherif Kouachi, by al Qaeda in Yemen. I went there and Sheikh Anwar al-Awlaki financed my trip."U.S. officials say that the other Kouachi brother, Said, spent several months in Yemen in 2011, receiving training from al Qaeda.Al-Awlaki was both the instigator of the al Qaeda's affiliate in Yemen's plots to attack the West and also one of the most influential clerics in the world of militant Islam. Indeed, al-Awlaki is the key influence behind many of the major terrorist attacks and plots of the past half decade in the West, and he has continued to retain that influence even after President Barack Obama made the decision five years ago to kill him with a drone strike.Awlaki is the key influence behind many of the major terrorist attacks and plots of the past half decade in the West.Al-Awlaki was an influence on the two Tsarnaev brothers, who are alleged to have killed three people at the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.He also influenced Carlos Bledsoe, who shot up an Army recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas, killing an American soldier in 2009. After the attacks, Bledsoe said his spiritual inspiration was al-Awlaki. Major Nidal Hasan killed 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009 after sending 18 emails to al-Awlaki in Yemen, a correspondence that was known to the FBI. Al-Awlaki did not direct this attack, but he was the key inspiration for Hasan.The "underwear bomber" Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab was directed by al-Awlaki to bring down an American jet over an American city in the fall of 2009. In the days following Abdul Mutallab's Christmas Day 2009 botched attack to bring down Northwest Flight 253 over Detroit with a bomb concealed in his underwear, it became clear from AbdulMuttalab's FBI interrogations that it was al-Awlaki who had ordered the young Nigerian man to carry out the operation.
Al-Awlaki's influence
What made al-Awlaki so influential is that, unlike a number of leaders of al Qaeda such as Osama bin Laden, he was a cleric, so he could present himself as a leading religious figure. Second, because al-Awlaki had spent much of his adult life in the States, he communicated with his followers in colloquial, accessible American English.At one point, he said that, "Jihad is becoming as American as apple pie." Third, his sermons were made widely available on YouTube and, indeed they continue to be available.Anwar al-Awlaki was a U.S. citizen by virtue of his birth in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 1971 while his Yemeni father was studying at New Mexico State University. Six years after al-Awlaki was born, his family moved back to Yemen, but he returned to the States for college and remained there for much of his adult life.As an undergrad, he attended Colorado State to study engineering.Al-Awlaki also started attending San Diego State, where he earned a master's degree in education. In San Diego, al-Awlaki encountered two men who, together with their 17 comrades, would transform American history. They were Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi.The CIA was tracking Mihdhar and Hazmi from the time that they attended an al Qaeda summit in Malaysia on January 5, 2000. Ten days after the meeting in Malaysia, on January 15, 2000, they flew into Los Angeles. They also started spending time with al-Awlaki. Indeed, al-Awlaki wrote a check to Hazmi for $175 three months before the 9/11 attacks.After the attacks on New York and Washington, these suspicious contacts made al-Awlaki the subject of intense FBI interest. The 9/11 attacks happened on a Tuesday. By Saturday, the FBI was knocking on al-Awlaki's door. FBI agents also met with al-Awlaki on three other occasions, and they secretly trailed his white Dodge Caravan for many weeks afterwards.At the time, the FBI couldn't determine whether al-Awlaki was someone who just had happened to encounter a number of nefarious individuals on a regular basis in the years before 9/11 or whether there was something more sinister about the cleric's social circle. By early spring 2002, al-Awlaki was studying in a doctoral program at George Washington University in Washington, but he decided to leave the country.Al-Awlaki arrived in London in March 2002 and found a more congenial environment than in the States. The city was sometimes referred to as "Londonistan" because of the relatively large number of Islamist militants living there and permissive British laws regarding free speech.
Imprisonment in Yemen
After two years in London, al-Awlaki traveled back to Yemen. In 2006, he was thrown into a Yemeni jail. Al-Awlaki characterized this as the result of his intervention into one of Yemen's numerous, and often deadly, tribal disputes. The U.S. government asserted that his imprisonment, in fact, came after al-Awlaki became involved in an al Qaeda plot to kidnap a U.S. official.During this period, the FBI's interest in al-Awlaki remained high, and FBI agents interrogated the cleric while he was in the Yemeni prison. In December 2007, al-Awlaki was released. Those who knew al-Awlaki found him to have emerged hardened after his time in jail.By the time al-Awlaki was released, he was becoming the key cleric in the English-speaking world of radical Islam, one that militants were turning too for answers. Osama bin Laden was still the overall inspirational head of the al Qaeda network, but he remained inaccessible in his hideout in Pakistan, whereas for militants in the West, you could chat with al-Awlaki though his website and in colloquial English to boot.Of the some 250 individuals charged or convicted of involvement of some kind of jihadist terrorist activity in the United States following the 9/11 attacks, an astonishing 62 were found to have al-Awlaki's writings or sermons in their possession or cited him as an influence and a further six corresponded with him or traveled to Yemen to meet with him, according to a count by New America.
The drone debate
Following the Christmas Day plot, al-Awlaki's role as the leader of al Qaeda in Yemen's plans to target the United States came into focus. Senior White House officials began debating whether they should target him for death. Al-Awlaki was no longer merely the cleric who inspired militants in the West that they had previously pegged him for.It was a momentous debate. Never before had a president and his advisers seriously contemplated authorizing the assassination of an American citizen.President Obama and a small team of senior national security officials were in the unusual position of acting as al-Awlaki's jury, judges and de facto executioners.A few days after the Christmas Day plot, Obama gave his verbal approval to target al-Awlaki for death. While the President had agonized over some of the decisions to target militants for death, the decision to kill al-Awlaki was an easy one, according to a senior Obama administration official who spoke to me about it. It underlined how obsessed the group, led by al-Awlaki, was about the issue of those who had purportedly "defamed" Islam.The debut of Inspire featured a "hit list" that included Flemming Rose and Kurt Westergaard, the editor and cartoonist who were responsible for a set of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that were published in Denmark in 2005 in the Jyllands-Posten newspaper.Also on the hit list was Molly Norris, a cartoonist living in Seattle who had similarly initiated an "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" in 2010.Inspire urged that they all should be killed and featured an essay by al-Awlaki who added his clerical imprimatur to this notion, saying that those who denigrated the Prophet are "insulting of over a billion Muslims worldwide. ... We will fight for him, we will instigate, we will bomb and we will assassinate."Al-Awlaki also released on the Internet an hourlong sermon, "The Dust Will Never Settle Down." Delivered in colloquial American English, it urged the assassination of anyone who "defamed" the Prophet Mohammed. In the lecture, al-Awlaki said, "Harming Allah and his Messenger is a reason to encourage Muslims to kill whoever does that."
A good lead on al-Awlaki
On May 5, 2011, just three days after bin Laden was killed in a U.S. Navy SEAL raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan, Obama was briefed by his national security team that there was a good lead on al-Awlaki's whereabouts in Yemen.Drones tracking al-Awlaki and his associates flew out of bases in east Africa and Saudi Arabia as well as from U.S. Navy ships cruising in the Arabian Sea. On the evening of May 5, special operations planners sent Predator drones, Harrier jets and an aircraft to follow al-Awlaki ,who was riding in a pickup across the deserts of Shabwah in southern Yemen.Al-Awlaki's truck was driving fast and the flight crews tracking the vehicle could not keep their laser-guided weapons locked on the fast-moving target.The next good intelligence about al-Awlaki's location came in September. Now the hunt for the elusive Yemeni-American cleric centered on the governorate of Al Jawf on Yemen's northern border with Saudi Arabia.An al Qaeda operative in Yemeni custody said that al-Awlaki was hiding in a house in the town of Khashef. Al-Awlaki made an uncharacteristic mistake; instead of changing his hideout location often, he remained in the house in Khashef for two weeks. The cleric was living in a location where he was surrounded by children, which no doubt made him think that there was a lower risk that the United States would take a shot at him with a drone.On the morning of Friday, September 30, 2011, al-Awlaki had just finished breakfast. He and his companions got into some vehicles, and CIA drones soon locked on to them, shooting missiles that killed al-Awlaki at 9:55 a.m. Also killed along with him was Samir Khan, another American citizen who had joined al Qaeda in Yemen.Killing the man did not kill his ideas or his influence. It seems, if anything, only to have magnified them among Islamist militants living in the West. Some two dozen militants indicted in the States since al-Awlaki's death have cited his influence or possessed his propaganda, according to a count by New America. For instance, Quazi Nafis, a 21-year old Bangladeshi on a student visa, was arrested in 2012 for plotting to bomb the New York Federal Reserve. So yes – it will be all about further moves towards the integration of Eurasia as the US is progressively squeezed out of Eurasia. We will see a complex geostrategic interplay progressively undermining the hegemony of the US dollar as a reserve currency and, most of all, the petrodollar.For all the immense challenges the Chinese face, all over Beijing it’s easy to detect unmistakable signs of a self-assured, self- confident, fully emerged commercial superpower. President Xi Jinping and the current leadership will keep investing heavily in the urbanization drive and the fight against corruption, including at the highest levels of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Internationally, the Chinese will accelerate their overwhelming push for new ‘Silk Roads’ – both overland and maritime – which will underpin the long-term Chinese master strategy of unifying Eurasia with trade and commerce.Global oil prices are bound to remain low. All bets are off on whether a nuclear deal will be reached by this summer between Iran and the P5+1. If sanctions (actually economic war) against Iran remain and continue to seriously hurt its economy, Tehran’s reaction will be firm, and will include even more integration with Asia, not the West.Washington is well-aware that a comprehensive deal with Iran cannot be reached without Russia’s help. That would be the Obama administration’s sole – and I repeat – sole foreign policy success. A return to the “Bomb Iran” hysteria would only suit the proverbial usual (neo-con) suspects. Still, by no accident, both Iran and Russia are now subject to Western sanctions. No matter how it was engineered, the fact that stands is that the current financial/ strategic oil price collapse is a direct attack against (who else?) Iran and Russia.
That derivative war
Now let’s take a look at Russian fundamentals. Russia’s government debt totals only 13.4% of its GDP. Its budget deficit in relation to GDP is only 0.5%. If we assume a US GDP of $16.8 trillion (the figure for 2013), the US budget deficit totals 4% of GDP, versus 0.5% for Russia. The Fed is essentially a private corporation owned by regional US private banks, although it passes itself off as a state institution. US publicly held debt is equal to a whopping 74% of GDP in fiscal year 2014. Russia’s is only 13.4%.The declaration of economic war by the US and EU on Russia – via the run on the ruble and the oil derivative attack – was essentially a derivatives racket. Derivatives – in theory – may be multiplied to infinity. Derivative operators attacked both the ruble and oil prices in order to destroy the Russian economy. The problem is, the Russian economy is more soundly financed than America’s.Considering that this swift move was conceived as a checkmate, Moscow’s defensive strategy was not that bad. On the key energy front, the problem remains the West’s – not Russia’s. If the EU does not buy what Gazprom has to offer, it will collapse.Moscow’s key mistake was to allow Russia’s domestic industry to be financed by external, dollar-denominated debt. Talk about a monster debt trap which can be easily manipulated by the West. The first step for Moscow should be to closely supervise its banks. Russian companies should borrow domestically and move to sell their assets abroad. Moscow should also consider implementing a system of currency controls so the basic interest rate can be brought down quickly.And don’t forget that Russia can always deploy a moratorium on debt and interest, affecting over $600 billion. That would shake the entire world’s banking system to the core. Talk about an undisguised “message” forcing the US/EU economic warfare to dissolve.Russia does not need to import any raw materials. Russia can easily reverse-engineer virtually any imported technology if it needs to. Most of all, Russia can generate — from the sale of raw materials – enough credit in US dollars or euros. Russia’s sale of its energy wealth — or sophisticated military gear — may decline. However, they will bring in the same amount of rubles — as the ruble has also declined. Replacing imports with domestic Russian manufacturing makes total sense. There will be an inevitable “adjustment” phase – but that won’t take long. German car manufacturers, for instance, can no longer sell their cars in Russia due to the ruble’s decline. This means they will have to relocate their factories to Russia. If they don’t, Asia – from South Korea to China — will blow them out of the market.
Bear and dragon on the prowl
The EU’s declaration of economic war against Russia makes no sense whatsoever. Russia controls, directly or indirectly, most of the oil and natural gas between Russia and China: roughly 25% of the world’s supply. The Middle East is bound to remain a mess. Africa is unstable. The EU is doing everything it can to cut itself off from its most stable supply of hydrocarbons, prompting Moscow to redirect energy to China and the rest of Asia. What a gift for Beijing – as it minimizes the alarm about the US Navy playing with “containment” across the high seas.Still, an unspoken axiom in Beijing is that the Chinese remain extremely worried about an Empire of Chaos losing more and more control, and dictating the stormy terms of the relationship between the EU and Russia. The bottom line is that Beijing would never allow itself to be in a position where the US could interfere with China’s energy imports – as was the case with Japan in July 1941 when the US declared war by imposing an oil embargo, cutting off 92% of Japanese oil imports.Everyone knows a key plank of China’s spectacular surge in industrial power was the requirement for manufacturers to produce in China. If Russia did the same, its economy would be growing at a rate of over 5% per year in no time. It could grow even more if bank credit was tied only to productive investment.Now imagine Russia and China jointly investing in a new gold, oil and natural resource-backed monetary union as a crucial alternative to the failed debt “democracy” model pushed by the Masters of the Universe on Wall Street, the Western central bank cartel, and neoliberal politicians. They would be showing the Global South that financing prosperity and improved standards of living by saddling future generations with debt was never meant to work in the first place.Until then, a storm will be threatening our very lives – today and tomorrow. The Masters of the Universe/Washington combo won’t give up their strategy to make Russia a pariah state cut off from trade, the transfer of funds, banking and Western credit markets and thus prone to regime change.Further on down the road, if all goes according to plan, their target will be (who else) China. And Beijing knows it. Meanwhile, expect a few bombshells to shake the EU to its foundations. Time may be running out – but for the EU, not Russia. Still, the overall trend won’t be altered; the Empire of Chaos is slowly but surely being squeezed out of Eurasia.

He has all children in Bethlehem killed. “We think immediately of Pakistan, where a month ago, more than a hundred children were slaughtered with unspeakable brutality,” Francis said assuring victims’ families of his prayers.Francis linked the “culture of rejection” which spawns “violence and death” to “the events reported daily in the news, not least the tragic slayings which took place in Paris a few days ago.” People are seen “as objects” and “losing their freedom, people become enslaved, whether to the latest fads, or to power, money, or even deviant forms of religion”. Speaking about the consequences of this mentality, Francis talked about “a true world war fought piecemeal” in various parts of the world, starting “with nearby Ukraine, which has become a dramatic theatre of combat.” “It is my hope that through dialogue the efforts presently being made to end the hostilities will be consolidated, and that the parties involved will embark as quickly as possible, in a renewed spirit of respect for international law, upon the path of mutual trust and fraternal reconciliation.”Francis then spoke about the Middle East and the intensity of the prayer meeting with Peres and Abu Mazen in the Vatican. He said he that negotiations between the two parties will once more resume, for the sake of ending violence and reaching a solution which can enable Palestinians and Israelis alike to live at last in peace within clearly established and internationally recognized borders, thus implementing the “two state solution”.” He also mentioned the other conflicts in the region which have had “chilling repercussions, due also to the spread of fundamentalist terrorism in Syria and in Iraq. This phenomenon is a consequence of the throwaway culture being applied to God.
