QZ8501: More bodies found as search expands- cnannel newsasia-UPDATED: 05 Jan 2015 18:20

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia: Search teams on Monday (Jan 5) found four more bodies as they expanded their operation to find victims and wreckage from AirAsia flight QZ8501 in the Java Sea, which they fear have drifted in rough weather over the past week. All the four victims are Indonesian. Indonesian police identified them as 45-year-old Shiane Josal; 42-year-old Tony Linaksita; 61-year-old Lim Yan Koen; 53-year-old Yongki Jou. This means that of the 37 bodies retrieved so far, a total of 13 have been identified. As the massive search operation entered its ninth day, officials were hopeful for a break in poor conditions to send divers down to the area where large parts of the crashed Airbus A320-200 have been found.A total of 162 people were on board when the plane crashed into the sea during a storm on Dec 28, en route from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore."Hopefully the weather is good today so that the ROVs (remotely-operated underwater vehicles) and other instruments can be used and our divers can go to the seabed again," search and rescue official S B Supriyadi told AFP.He said he was hopeful they would find "all the parts" of the aircraft Monday and get its exact coordinates underwater."Yesterday when our divers went down, the visibility was very bad," Supriyadi added. Recovery crews nonetheless made some progress on Sunday, retrieving four more bodies and locating a fifth large chunk of the plane. The discoveries came after Indonesia's meterological agency said ice likely caused the plane's engine to stall, and as the pilot's daughter urged the public not to blame her father.Searchers are hunting for the "black box" flight data recorders to determine the cause of the crash.Supriyadi said the search, which is being assisted by several countries including the United States and Russia, would expand eastwards Monday on suspicions that strong currents have caused parts of the plane to drift.Several aircraft were making their way from Pangkalan Bun, a town on the island of Borneo with the nearest airstrip to the wreckage, to scour the sea's surface. Speed boats were sweeping the coastline for signs of bodies that may have drifted to shore.

HOPE TO FIND BLACK BOXES

Supriyadi said the team was assessing whether to lift the discovered plane parts off the seabed or just find the "black box" flight data recorders."We hope to find the black boxes as soon as possible," he said. "If the tail is upside down and the door to the black box is in the mud, we need to dig the sea floor and that's difficult. We are hoping the door to the black box is facing upwards so it is easier for us to fetch it."An initial report by Indonesia's meteorological agency BMKG suggested the weather was the "triggering factor" behind the accident. The report referred to infra-red satellite pictures that showed the plane was passing through cloud top temperatures of minus 80 to minus 85 degrees Celsius. But it remained unclear why other planes on similar routes were unaffected by the weather, and other analysts said there was not enough information to explain the disaster until the flight recorders were recovered. The operation has prioritised finding the bodies of the victims, of whom 155 were Indonesian, with three South Koreans, one Singaporean, one Malaysian, one Briton and a Frenchman - co-pilot Remi Plesel. Some of the bodies have been found still strapped into their seats. The daughter of the plane's pilot, Captain Irianto, made a televised plea late Sunday urging people not to blame her father."He is just a victim and has not been found yet. My family is now mourning," said Angela Anggi Ranastianis. "As a daughter, I cannot accept it. No pilot will harm his passengers," she told TV One.In his last communication, experienced former air force pilot Irianto said he wanted to change course to avoid the menacing storm system. Then all contact was lost, about 40 minutes after take-off.Many of the victims' relatives have gathered to wait for news and prepare funerals in Surabaya, where a crisis centre has been set up for identifying bodies.Indonesia has pledged to investigate alleged flight violations by AirAsia, saying the aircraft had been flying on an unauthorised schedule when it crashed. The airline has now been suspended from flying the Surabaya-Singapore route.- AFP/CNA/xq/ir

Indonesia orders air officials' suspension as crash probed-CHANNEL NEWSASIA-UPDATED: 05 Jan 2015 22:02

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia: Indonesia on Monday (Jan 5) ordered the suspension of aviation officials as it investigates the crash of AirAsia Flight 8501, also promising action against any domestic airlines violating their flying permits. The crackdown came as a major search in the Java Sea entered its ninth day, struggling in bad weather to find more bodies or the "black box" flight data recorders which are crucial to determining the cause of the disaster.Only three more bodies were recovered on Monday, bringing the total found to 37. A total of 162 passengers and crew were aboard the Airbus A320-200 on December 28 when it crashed en route from Indonesia's second largest city Surabaya to Singapore.Indonesia alleges the plane was flying on an unauthorised schedule. The transport ministry has now ordered airport and air navigation managers to "suspend the personnel involved" in the activity of Flight 8501, director general of air transport Djoko Murjatmodjo told reporters.AirAsia Indonesia, a unit of Malaysia-based AirAsia, has already been suspended from flying the Surabaya-Singapore route - although Singapore officials said they had given permission for the flight at their end.Murjatmodjo said they would halt any other airline found violating its permitted flight schedule in the country, which has a patchy aviation safety record. "If, after assessment, another airline is also not flying on the approved schedule, that is a violation and we will suspend it too," Murjatmodjo said, adding that they were investigating how AirAsia had been flying on an unapproved schedule without the ministry's knowledge.Search and rescue agency chief Bambang Soelistyo meanwhile said three more bodies from the crash were recovered Monday, but only two advance divers had been able to go down to the wreckage off the island of Borneo. Five large parts of the plane including the suspected tail have so far been located. "The current was strong. So (most of) the divers are still on standby," Soelistyo told reporters. The search, assisted by several countries including the United States and Russia, has been trying to expand eastwards on suspicions that strong currents have caused parts of the plane to drift.Earlier in the day several aircraft made their way from Pangkalan Bun, a town on Borneo with the nearest airstrip to the wreckage, to scour the sea's surface. Speedboats were sweeping the coastline to look for any bodies that may have drifted ashore.Indonesia's military chief General Moeldoko said he had offered to take relatives out to the crash site to pay their respects. "We will bring them to the navy ships and we will take them to the location to scatter flowers, and I hope coming to the location can reduce their sadness and the feeling of loss," he told reporters.

HOPE TO FIND BLACK BOXES

Indonesia's meteorological agency BMKG has said weather was the "triggering factor" of the crash, with ice likely damaging the plane's engines. The initial report by BMKG into the likely cause of the crash referred to infra-red satellite pictures that showed the plane was passing through clouds with top temperatures of minus 80 to minus 85 degrees Celsius. But it remained unclear why other planes on similar routes were unaffected by the weather, and other analysts said there was not enough information to explain the disaster until the flight recorders were recovered. The transport ministry said at the weekend it would issue a circular insisting pilots were directly briefed by officials on weather conditions before flights, after reports that the AirAsia pilots had instead taken forecasts from the BMKG website.Search and rescue official S.B. Supriyadi said the recovery teams were assessing whether to lift the plane parts off the seabed in an effort to find the flight data recorders. The operation has prioritised finding the bodies of the victims, all but seven of whom were Indonesian. Some of the bodies have been found still strapped into their seats. The daughter of the plane's pilot, Captain Iriyanto, made a televised plea late Sunday urging people not to blame her father. "He is just a victim and has not been found yet. My family is now mourning," said Angela Anggi Ranastianis. "As a daughter, I cannot accept it. No pilot will harm his passengers," she told TV One.In his last communication, experienced former air force pilot Iriyanto said he wanted to change course to avoid the menacing storm system, but he was not immediately allowed to ascend due to heavy air traffic. Then all contact was lost, about 40 minutes after take-off.Many of the victims' relatives have gathered to wait for news and prepare funerals in Surabaya, where a crisis centre has been set up for identifying bodies.- AFP/ir

AirAsia flight QZ8501: Black box 'not far' from where large objects were found, says search ops chief-Published on Jan 4, 2015 8:51 PM-THE STRAITS TIMES

JAKARTA - The chief of Indonesia's search and rescue agency Basarnas expressed optimism on Sunday that the black box of AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 was located "not far" from five large objects the search operation had spotted in the Java Sea."The black box should not be far from the five significant objects we found," Mr Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo told a media briefing at the agency's headquarters in Jakarta late on Sunday.Officials had believed they were close to a major breakthrough after pinpointing five large objects on the sea floor thought to be parts of the Airbus A320-200 jet this weekend. But Mr Bambang Soelistyo noted the ongoing difficulty facing the multinational recovery operation: "Our challeng is mud. Lots of mud at the sea bottom."Up to now, he said, no vessels had detected any signal beamed from the black boxes, or flight recorders.Mr Bambang Soelistyo also confirmed that 34 bodies had been found so far, eight days after the jetliner crashed en route from Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people onboard. All the bodies had been sent to the identification centre in Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city.He said five vessels with the ability to locate black boxes will be assigned on Monday. The weather also remains a problem, he said."Several (divers) tried to dive but had to return. Safety is also important for rescuers," he told reporters."Finding the black box and victims' bodies are our two top priorities. We will do our utmost to locate them," he said.

AirAsia flight QZ8501: Ping! 6 things about pings that may lead to the black box-Published on Jan 5, 2015 12:02 PM-By Jalelah Abu Baker-THE STRAITS TIMES

Search teams will focus on looking for the black box flight recorders of AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501, now that debris and bodies have been found in the Karimata Strait off the coast of Borneo. Search efforts are underway to find the black box of the plane which went down in the Java Sea with 162 people on board during its journey from Surabaya to Singapore on Dec 28. Finding the black box, which contains recorded information on the plane's final moments, will provide investigators clues to what could have happened. To find these black boxes, investigators listen for "pings" coming from them. So far, no ping has been detected, and reasons pointed out have been the bad weather and mud.

1. What is a ping?

It is a sound emitted by a device called the Underwater Locator Beacon that is fitted to the flight recorders found in the black box of a plane. The sound, which is inaudible to humans, helps investigators track the black box of a plane. The underwater locator beacon is also called an emergency locator beacon, or pinger.

2. How does the ping get heard?

The beacon gets activated once it is is submerged underwater. According to a user manual for such beacons, it trasmits an acoustic signal (the ping) at 37.5 kHz once every second. The pinging usually lasts 30 days after activation with a standard lithium battery. The ping is then picked up by a pinger locator. Pings can typically be picked up from about 3,000 to 6,000m away.

3. What is a pinger locator?

There are different kinds of pinger locators. Examples include the towed pinger locator, which is pulled by a vessel slowly, and the unmanned automonous underwater vehicle. The towed pinger locator is equipped with a sensor that recognises the pings up to 20,000 feet (6,100m) below the water surface. The autonomous underwater vehicle, which works like a robot, takes six times longer to cover the same area as the towed pinger locator, according to Reuters.

4. What makes it difficult to hear a ping?

The sound can be obscured by weather, noise or silt, CNN news reported. Given that the AirAsia plane crashed in shallow seas, experts say finding the boxes should not be difficult if the pingers, with a range of 2,000 to 3,000 metres, are working. The chief of Indonesia's search and rescue agency Basarnas Hernanto said: "Our challenge is mud. Lots of mud at the sea bottom."The weather also remained a problem. Reuters also reported that strong winds and four-meter high waves have kept progress "agonisingly slow".

5. Does a ping always lead to the location of the black box?

No. In the case of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 which went missing on March 8 as it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, four pings were detected, and they were believed to be from the missing plane's black box.A search area was established based on the pings, but no black box was found. It was later decided that the area was not the "final resting place" of the plane. To date, no trace of the plane has been found and there is no explanation for its disappearance.

6. Can a black box be located even after the pinging stops?

Yes. The black boxes of Air France Flight 447 was not found until after its ping had expired. Two years after it went missing in 2009, the black boxes were found deep in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The black boxes were located by autonomous underwater vehicles. The flight, with 228 people on board, went missing over a large body of deep water. Search-and-rescue operations found debris and some of the bodies in the weeks following the crash, but the main wreckage and black boxes only much later. On the positive side, the depletion of the battery will not wipe out data. Data has been known to survive for years in harsh sea water conditions on modern recorders.Sources: Reuters, CNN, The Straits Times, TeledyneBenthos-jalmsab@sph.com.sg

AirAsia says Bandung-bound flight incident 'not stalled engine'-UPDATED: 05 Jan 2015 04:20-CHANNEL NEWSASIA

SURABAYA, Indonesia: AirAsia on Sunday (Jan 4) downplayed an incident that saw one of its planes turned back before takeoff in Indonesia, a week after another of its jets crashed into the Java Sea with 162 on board.Indonesia AirAsia flight 7633 was taxiing in preparation for takeoff on Saturday at Surabaya airport - where last week's doomed flight also took off - when a power unit used to start the plane shut down, an airline official said.As a result, the pilot turned back to the gate, Raden Achmad Sadikin, director of Safety and Security at Indonesia AirAsia, told reporters.Local media in Indonesia and Malaysia had reported the Bandung-bound plane's engine had cut out after emitting a loud bang that terrified passengers, but AirAsia stressed it was a minor incident."It's not that the engine failed. The plane wanted to take off but the APU (auxiliary power unit), which is the equipment that helped to start the engine, suddenly shut down," Sadikin said. The plane later landed safely at its destination in West Java after undergoing a check, Indonesia AirAsia chief executive Sunu Widyatmoko was quoted by local media as saying.Meanwhile, AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes lashed out at the initial media reports, calling the headlines "sensational" and "silly". "Silly headlines in Malaysia. Airasia Indonesia aircraft did not have a stalled engine. An Apu (auxiliary power unit) which is ground power had to be restarted."Fernandes urged staff to remain strong. "Facts will come out. As I have said we are calm, will take the hits now as our focus is families. Around 100 family members of AirAsia Flight 8501 crash victims sought strength Sunday, one week after the disaster, while bad weather again prevented searchers from reaching a large object on the ocean floor that is believed to be the fuselage.Emotionally exhausted relatives sang and cried at a tiny chapel in Surabaya, the city where the plane departed from last Sunday with 162 crew members and passengers. The Rev. Philip Mantofa, who heads the congregation at the city's Mawar Sharon Church - where more than a quarter of the crash victims were members - urged those gathered to find comfort in their faith while embracing the reality that no one survived the disaster."If God has called your child, allow me to say this: Your child is not to be pitied," Mantofa told one Indonesian man seated in the front row. "Your child is already in God's arms. One day, your family will be reunited in heaven."It is not clear what caused the Singapore-bound plane to crash into the Java Sea 42 minutes after taking off on what was supposed to be a two-hour flight. Minutes before losing contact, the pilot told air traffic control that he was approaching threatening clouds, but was denied permission to climb to a higher altitude because of heavy air traffic.Despite an intensive international search-and-recovery operation, only 31 bodies have been found so far, in large part because of bad weather. But after detecting what appears to be a massive part of the fuselage on Saturday, officials said it was possible that many passengers and crew will be found inside the wreckage.Divers waited for breaks in the weather Sunday to reach the site, but rolling seas stirred up silt and mud, leaving them with zero visibility, said Henry Bambang Soelistyo, chief of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency. They were forced to turn back because conditions were so bad."At this moment, it's impossible to send any divers," he said. "We'll wait until the weather gets better."Twenty planes and helicopters were deployed Sunday together with 27 ships from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. All were desperately searching for any sign of the all-important black boxes and pieces of the Airbus A320.The investigation got a huge boost this weekend when sonar equipment identified five large objects on the seabed in the search area, but no images have been captured confirming they are part of the AirAsia plane. The biggest piece of debris, measuring 18 meters (59 feet) long and 5.4 meters (18 feet) wide, appeared to be part of the fuselage, Soelistyo said. Four other chunks were found in the same area, including one detected on Sunday.Suspected plane parts also were seen scattered on beaches during an aerial survey.Indonesian authorities have announced the grounding of AirAsia flights from Surabaya to Singapore, with the Transport Ministry saying the airline did not have a permit to fly on Sundays. However, Singapore's Civil Aviation Authority said Saturday that from its end, the airline had been approved to fly the route daily.AirAsia, which began operations in 2001 and quickly became one of the region's most popular low-cost carriers, said it was reviewing the suspension. The crash was the airline's first. While Indonesia is predominantly Muslim, many of the passengers were Christians of Chinese descent. Mantofa's congregation was hit particularly hard, with more than a quarter of the victims - coming from 13 families - belonging to his large Penecostal church. Following Sunday's chapel service, Edo Anggradinata, 52, said he was finally starting to let go of the hope that his sister and her two children had survived."My mind is still in a daze," he said. "If there is a miracle, I hope they are alive, but I know this is tough. I just pray that we find their bodies."- Reuters

Weather frustrates AirAsia search divers, no 'pings' detected-Reuters-jan 4,15-yahoonews-By Fergus Jensen and Fransiska Nangoy

PANGKALAN BUN/SURABAYA, Indonesia (Reuters) - Bad weather forced divers trying to identify sunken wreckage from a crashed AirAsia passenger jet to abort their mission on Sunday and Indonesian officials said they had not yet picked up any signals from the lost plane's "black box".Indonesia's meteorological agency has said seasonal tropical storms probably contributed to last Sunday's crash and the weather has persistently hampered efforts to recover bodies and find the cockpit voice and flight data recorders that may explain why the Airbus A320-200 plunged into the sea."Conditions did not allow diving operations," the head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo, told a news conference in Jakarta. "Our priority is to dive in the location we suspect parts of the plane to be."Flight QZ8501 crashed into the Java Sea about 40 minutes after taking off last Sunday from Indonesia's second-largest city Surabaya en route for Singapore. There were no survivors. The main focus of the search is about 90 nautical miles off the coast of Borneo island, where five large objects believed to be parts of the plane -- the largest about 18 meters (59 feet) long -- have been pinpointed by ships using sonar."Based on past experience, the black box is not far from the plane debris we have found," Soelistyo said. But he added that none of the searching ships had detected any "pings", the locator signals the black box should transmit after a crash.Until investigators can examine the black box recorders the cause of the crash remains a mystery, but the area is known for intense seasonal storms. BMKG, Indonesia's meteorological agency, has said bad weather may have caused ice to form on the aircraft's engines."The flight document provided by the BMKG office shows fairly worrying weather conditions for the aircraft at cruising level on the chosen route," the agency said in a report.

BAD WEATHER

Both flight recorders are located near the tail of the Airbus, but it was unclear whether that part of the aircraft was among the debris found on the seabed."Based on the finding of pieces of debris it looks like the body of the aircraft split or cracked and was separated from its tail," said Air Force Lt Col Johnson Supriyadi, a search and rescue official co-ordinating the operation from the southern Borneo town of Pangkalan Bun.The suspected wreckage is lying in water around 30 meters deep, which experts say should make it relatively straightforward to recover.Nine ships from four countries have converged on the area, with teams of divers including seven Russian experts standing ready, but strong winds and four-meter high waves have kept progress agonizingly slow."There's a storm ... Earlier, four divers were transferred to (Indonesian navy ship) KRI Banda Aceh but they canceled the diving because the sea currents were too strong," said a Reuters photographer on board one vessel.Second Sergeant Akhyar of the search and rescue agency described what it was like being winched onto the deck of a ship to collect bodies in such conditions."The wind makes you spin and I'm quite light, so I get blown left and right, swinging," he said.

BODIES MAY BE IN FUSELAGE

Thirty-four bodies of the mostly Indonesian passengers and crew have so far been recovered, including some still strapped in their seats. Many more may be still trapped in the fuselage of the aircraft."This big part of the plane, we still have hope that victims are still inside the body of the plane," said Soelistiyo, adding that he was referring to one of the five objects found. The crash was the first fatal accident suffered by the AirAsia budget group, whose Indonesian affiliate flies from at least 15 destinations across the sprawling archipelago. The airline has come under pressure from Indonesian authorities, who have suspended its Surabaya to Singapore operations saying the carrier only had a license to fly the route on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.Indonesia AirAsia said it would co-operate with the transport ministry while it investigates the license.A joint statement from Singapore's civil aviation authority (CAAS) and Changi Airport Group said that AirAsia had the necessary approvals to operate a daily flight between Surabaya and Singapore.(Additional reporting by Beawiharta ABOARD KN PURWOREJO, Nilufar Rizki, Adriana Nina Kusuma, Chris Nusatya, Cindy Silviana, Kanupriya Kapoor, Michael Taylor, Charlotte Greenfield and Nicholas Owen in JAKARTA, and Anshuman Daga in SINGAPORE; Writing by Alex Richardson; Editing by Michael Perry, Kim Coghill and Gareth Jones)

Israel 'won't let its soldiers be dragged to the ICC': PM-AFP-jan 4,15-yahoonews

Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel will not permit its soldiers to be hauled in front of the International Criminal Court on potential war crimes charges, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday."We will not let Israel Defence Forces (IDF) soldiers and officers be dragged to the International Criminal Court in The Hague," Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, two days after the Palestinians filed a controversial application to become a party to the court.

Israel eyes tougher moves after Palestinian tax freeze-AFP-jan 4,15-yahoonews

Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel was weighing its options Sunday for further punishing the Palestinians after freezing millions in tax revenues as a first response to their bid to join the International Criminal Court. The Palestinian move to join the Hague-based court sets the scene for potential legal action against Israel for war crimes, in a bid to put pressure on the Jewish state to pull out of the territories. But the request to join the court, formally presented on Friday, infuriated Israel which quickly moved to freeze the transfer of half a billion shekels ($127 million/106 million euros) in tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority."The Palestinian Authority has chosen to take a path of confrontation with Israel, and we will not sit idly by," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told cabinet ministers on Sunday, vowing to put up a vigorous defence of Israel's soldiers. Although Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erakat denounced the freezing of the transfer as "piracy," Israeli officials warned it was only the first in a series of punitive steps."If the Palestinian Authority doesn't take a step back, I think we have to take much more severe steps," said Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz, a close associate of Netanyahu, referring to a "gradual dissolution" of the PA."We should not aid the existence of this authority."Israel may also file countersuits against top Palestinian officials, a source close to the government said on Friday. But, in an unusual development, Israel was not planning to announce any new settlement construction in the settlements, a senior foreign ministry official said on Sunday.Speaking to Israeli diplomats serving in Europe, foreign ministry director general Nissim Ben Sheetrit said Israel's response would be "harsher and more comprehensive" than just freezing the taxes, but would not include settlement announcements, ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon told AFP."Israel is about to switch from defence to attack mode," Nahshon quoted him as saying, confirming comments first published by Haaretz website. After the Palestinians won the upgraded UN rank of observer state in November 2012, Israel froze the tax monies and also announced plans for 3,000 homes in a highly-sensitive area of the West Bank, as well as in annexed east Jerusalem, triggering a furious response from the international community.A senior official quoted by Haaretz said the government had learned a lesson from that incident and would not be taking any steps making Israel the focus of criticism rather than the Palestinians.

- 'A nuisance for Israel' -

"We will not let Israel Defence Forces (IDF) soldiers and officers be dragged to the International Criminal Court in The Hague," Netanyahu told ministers on Sunday. The ICC can prosecute individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed since July 1, 2002, when the court's founding treaty, the Rome Statute, came into force."IDF soldiers will continue to defend Israel with determination and strength -- and as they defend us, we will defend them, with the same determination and the same strength," Netanyahu said.Israeli legal officials quoted by the top-selling Yediot Aharonot said that while the Palestinian decision to join the ICC could be "a nuisance for Israel, it would not yield any practical legal results".And a high-ranking legal official said Israel was ready to counter with its own lawsuits against senior Palestinian officials immediately. The basis of the complaints would be that Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas's partnership in a consensus government with Hamas makes him complicit in the militant Islamist group's attacks from Gaza on civilians in Israel."These lawsuits, which are backed up with evidence, documents and affidavits, can be filed as early as tomorrow morning," a high-ranking legal official told the paper.Under an economic agreement between the sides signed in 1994, Israel transfers to the PA tens of millions of dollars each month in customs duties levied on goods destined for Palestinian markets that transit through Israeli ports. The tax revenues make up around two-thirds of the PA's annual budget, excluding foreign aid.

1.5 million visitors at Nazi Auschwitz memorial in 2014-Associated Press-jan 4,15-yahoonews

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Officials say a record number of more than 1.5 million people from around the world visited the grounds of the former Nazi German death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 2014.
The Auschwitz museum said Sunday on its website most visitors came from within Poland, with large numbers of tourists also coming from Britain, the U.S., Italy and Germany. The website didn't say what the previous record was.Between 1940 and 1945, about 1.1 million people, mainly Jews but also Poles, Roma and other nationals, were killed in gas chambers or died from forced labor, hunger and disease in the camp operated by Nazi Germans. On Jan. 27, ceremonies attended by survivors will mark the 70th anniversary of its liberation by the Soviet army.

Israel says arrests Islamic State-linked Palestinians in West Bank-Reuters-jan 4,15-yahoonews

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli forces have detained three Islamic State-inspired militants in the occupied West Bank, the first known Palestinian cell linked to the Syria- and Iraq-based insurgent group, the Shin Bet internal security service said on Sunday. It said the three men, all in their early 20s and from Hebron, were arrested in November and told interrogators they planned to attack Israeli soldiers and a Jewish settler. The Shin Bet statement described the three as "identifying with" Islamic State, but made no mention of them having left the West Bank to meet with members of the insurgent group.A Shin Bet official said this was the first case Israel knew of in which Palestinians planned attacks in the name of Islamic State, whose bases in Syria and Iraq have drawn dozens of foreign volunteers, including Palestinians and Israeli Arabs. The three detainees are to be tried in Israeli military courts. It was not immediately clear from the Shin Bet statement whether they had been assigned lawyers or how they would plead to terrorism charges planned against them.(Writing by Dan Williams; Editing by Jeffrey Heller and Raissa Kasolowsky)

Abbas seeks to re-submit statehood bid to U.N. Security Council-Reuters-jan 04,15-yahoonews

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Sunday he was discussing with Jordan plans to resubmit to the United Nations Security Council a resolution calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state that failed to win enough votes last week.Jordan remains a member of the Security Council while several other countries with revolving membership were replaced over the New Year. The Palestinians hope these states will be more sympathetic to their resolution demanding an Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and independence by 2017, although the veto-wielding United States would be all but certain to vote 'No' again, as it did on Dec. 30."We didn't fail, the U.N. Security Council failed us. We'll go again to the Security Council, why not? Perhaps after a week," Abbas told officials at a cultural conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah, the Palestinian seat of self-rule government."We are studying it, and we will study this with our allies and especially Jordan ... to submit the resolution again, a third time or even a fourth time."In the U.N. vote on Tuesday, the Palestinian draft received eight votes in favor, including France, Russia and China, two against and five abstentions, among them Britain. Australia joined the United States in voting against the measure. But any resubmission would face almost certain failure. The U.S. has veto power as one of the council's five permanent members and has pledged to block Abbas's plan, calling it one-sided and unproductive.Abbas signed onto 20 international conventions the next day, including the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, giving the court jurisdiction over crimes committed on Palestinian lands and opening up an unprecedented confrontation between the veteran peace negotiator and Israel. In retaliation for the move to the ICC, Israel announced on Saturday that it would withhold 500 million shekels ($125 million) in monthly tax funds that it collects on the Palestinians' behalf, in a blow to Abbas's cash-strapped government."Now there are sanctions - that's fine. There's an escalation - that's fine ... but we're pushing forward," Abbas said.(Reporting by Noah Browning and Ali Sawafta; Writing by Allyn Fisher-Ilan; Editing by Kevin Liffey and Stephen Powell)

Wife of slain NYPD cop Wenjian Liu: 'You were an amazing man'-By Ashley Fantz, Ben Brumfield and Holly Yan, CNN-Updated 3:39 PM ET, Sun January 4, 2015

New York (CNN)At a funeral for Wenjian Liu on Sunday, the slain New York Police officer was remembered as a family man, a dedicated police officer, an avid fisherman and a person who embraced the best of what the United States can be.Liu was 12 when his parents emigrated with him in 1994 from Canton, China. His family said that the first souvenir he bought when he arrived was a sticker of the Statue of Liberty. He valued law and order and always wanted to be an officer.Weeping, his wife Pei Xia Chen told the thousands of mourners who gathered at Brooklyn's Aievoli Funeral Home that her husband was dedicated to his job and he understood the awesome responsibility it entailed."We spoke about work often," she said, "and how much respect he had for the law, how he applied the law ... with courtesy, with respect and with the highest professionalism."The couple had been married for only two months when Liu was shot to death December 20 as he sat in his patrol car next his partner, Officer Rafael Ramos. In uniform, Ramos and Liu were apparently murdered simply because they were cops. Their killer had posted on social media his desire to end police officers' lives. In the immediate aftermath of the slayings, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called the attack on the officers an attack on all New Yorkers. On Sunday, the mayor said that Liu, as well as Ramos, "embodied our city's most cherished values."(In their deaths, we lost) the very best of us. Everything that we [are] as New Yorkers ... we lost two individuals who were showing us the way," the mayor told mourners.Ramos saw his work as a ministry and was posthumously appointed honorary NYPD chaplain. He was just hours away from becoming a lay chaplain and graduating from a community-crisis chaplaincy program before his violent death. He left behind a wife, Maritza, and two sons, Justin and Jaden.During Ramos' service, some officers turned their backs on de Blasio, a sign that they feel he has been unsupportive of law enforcement. The same silent protest happened at Liu's funeral, though it appeared fewer officers turned their backs. Before Liu's funeral, Police Commissioner William Bratton had asked that officers refrain from acted disrespectfully. He believed that by being a cop, he could help make the world and his city safer, the commissioner said.Though he majored in accounting in college, Liu joined the police force where he served for seven years. He used his Chinese-language skills as whenever he could, his family said.Bratton described him as an especially empathetic person who often listened to the people he served in New York. Being a cop is about more than paperwork and arrests and keeping watch. It's about being kind, he said."For seven years, he sought out" those who were suffering and tried to ease that.At Ramos' funeral last weekend, Bratton promoted both men to the rank of detective, first grade.ratton said: Liu "believed in the possibility ... of a city free of fear."Liu is the type of "officer that we want ... and the type that we have," the commissioner continued. His dedication was hardly unique though, the commissioner said. It is reflected in every man and woman who works for the New York Police Department.

"It's what we do," Bratton said.De Blasio praised Liu for his love of family. The officer rarely took time off but when he did, Liu went fishing. And in those wonderful moments when he caught a big fish, he would share it with his parents and his wife.He was a "brave and skilled police officer but he was also a kind man, a kind officer, someone who gave of himself," the mayor said. "He wanted to help others in everything he did."Liu was "walked a path of courage, path of sacrifice, a path of kindness," the mayor continued. "This city welcomed Detective Liu. New York stands a little taller today because of the time he walked among us."FBI director James Comey was the first to address mourners, speaking about what drives officers to do their job despite the risks. "They want to do good ... they want to make ordinary life" better," he said.Though political and law enforcement leaders gave moving comments, hearing from Liu's family members was truly heartbreaking.Liu's father wept as he talked about his son in Cantonese.Pei Xie Chen spoke directly to her husband: "You were an amazing man."

Diversity and unity

The ceremonial burning of paper money and the melodic sounds of Buddhist chants marked Liu's wake Saturday.Under a mix of rain and snow, throngs of uniformed police officers and firefighters gathered in a sign of the diversity and unity.Liu was 12 when his parents emigrated with him in 1994 from Canton, China. His police partner, Ramos, a New York native of Puerto Rican descent, was remembered last week with a massive outpouring at a Protestant church in Queens. With the city and nation divided over the treatment of minorities by police, the lives of the two fallen officers more closely reflected the city's diversity."This was his dream, to become an NYPD officer," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said outside Liu's wake Saturday. "In some ways, it's the ultimate assimilation into America, into New York, to become a police officer. And obviously he was so proud, and he was so proud for his whole family."

From protests to reverence

The police commissioner made one request to officers attending Liu's funeral: Don't carry out an "act of disrespect" against anyone, Bratton said in a memo obtained by CNN.The message was directed at a large group of officers who attended Ramos' funeral last week and turned their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio as he gave his eulogy. Some officers have accused the mayor of encouraging anti-police fervor because of his support of protests against police brutality. Tens of thousands had taken to the streets after the death of African-American Eric Garner during an encounter with white NYPD officers in July.Pat Lynch, head of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, has taken aim at de Blasio, even saying the mayor's office was stained with the officers' blood."A hero's funeral is about grieving, not grievance," Bratton said. He said the earlier display put all NYPD officers in a bad light."It stole the valor, honor and attention that rightfully belonged to the memory of detective Rafael Ramos's life and sacrifice," his memo read. But he commiserated with the sentiments of many officers."As a cop, one who lived and worked through the assassination threats of the 1970s, I understand that emotions are high," he said. After Liu's funeral, Lynch told reporters that some officers "feel like they were turned upon by City Hall and we have a right to express our opinions as well, and they did respectfully."Officers who turned their backs when the mayor spoke did not act, Lynch said, "inside a church, not inside the service, but outside where it should be done, on the streets, like we have a right to do.""This was an organic gesture that started on the streets of New York, and it should be respected," he said.On Saturday, there was no protest by the police against the mayor. Several officers saluted de Blasio when he arrived for Liu's wake. After Sunday's service, a drum corps played as officers walked block after block as Liu's body was transported from the funeral home. Officers from around the country joined local officers paying tribute. For more than a half mile away in any direction from the procession, one could see a huge wall of police uniforms.CNN's Shimon Prokupecz and Michael Martinez contributed to this report.

NY police chief urges no protests at funeral for slain cop-AFP-jan 4,15-yahoonews

New York (AFP) - New York police chief Bill Bratton urged officers not to vent their fury at the city's mayor ahead of services starting Saturday to honor one of two cops shot dead last month.A wake was planned for Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn for Wenjian Liu, 32, shot to death on December 20 with his partner by a gunman who claimed to be acting in revenge for the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police.Liu's funeral is set for Sunday, also in Brooklyn, with high-level guests to include Mayor Bill de Blasio and FBI director James Comey.De Blasio also attended services last week for officer Rafael Ramos, and many police watching on screens outside the church turned their backs in protest as the mayor took the podium.Police commissioner Bratton urged his force this weekend not to repeat the performance, which he has previously called "very inappropriate.""A hero's funeral is about grieving, not grievance," Bratton wrote in a memo to the 34,000 New York police officers."I issue no mandates, and I make no threats of discipline, but I remind you that when you don the uniform of this department, you are bound by the tradition, honor and decency that go with it."More than 20,000 police officers from across the United States attended the funeral for Ramos. Ramos, 40, and Liu, were shot in the head as they sat in their patrol car by Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who police said had a clear anti-police bias and posted Instagram comments that were anti-government and referenced two unarmed black men killed recently by police. The killing of the two officers in broad daylight shocked New Yorkers and caused a long-running dispute between the mayor and the police to spill over into public view. Some officers have been highly critical of de Blasio for remarks about police relations with black Americans that they say incited the shooting. They remain angered, in particular, over de Blasio's statement that he counsels his biracial son to be particularly careful around police officers.

9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.(THE VATICAN IS BUILT ON 7 HILLS OR MOUNTAINS)
15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.(VATICAN-CATHOLICS ALL AROUND THE WORLD OVER 1 BILLION)
16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast,(WORLD DICTATOR) these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.(BOMB OR NUKE THE VATICAN)
17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city,(VATICAN) which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

01/ 1/2015 -the vatican insider-The Pope: ‘No more wars. Peace is possible, we must strive for it’
The first Angelus of 2015-In the first Angelus of 2015, Francis warns us against the ‘law that does not free, but imposes unbearable yokes’-Giacomo Galeazzi

vatican city-‘Brotherhood among peoples and no more wars’. The Pope, quoting the tolls of the ‘Mater Dolens’ bell in Rovereto, which remembers the fallen of all wars, repeated his ‘wish that there may be no more wars, but only the desire and commitment to peace and brotherhood among peoples’. He said that ‘peace is always, always possible and we must strive for it’. Francis spoke off the cuff, facing around 50 thousand people in St. Peter’s Square, adding that ‘prayer is the root of peace, it makes peace grow’. ‘Happy New Year everyone, may it be a peaceful year!’, wished the Pope for today’s World Peace Day.Francis was in direct link with Rovereto, in Trentino, where the great bell tolls, which was made in honour of the fallen of all wars, and blessed by Pope Paul VI in 1965. He wished that ‘there may be no more wars, never again! But always the desire and commitment to peace and brotherhood among peoples’.The Pope highlighted that the legalistic mind-set turns the law into an unbearable yoke. The fact that God became man, reminds us that every purpose of liberation needs to be a regeneration too. The Pope commented on the readings of the day, saying that, ‘Christ took on the human condition, freeing it from a close, legalistic and unbearable mind-set. Law free from grace becomes an unbearable yoke, and instead of doing us good, it hurts us. This is the purpose, for which God sends his Son on earth to become man. The purpose is liberation, better yet regeneration. Liberation of those who were under the yoke of the law. Redemption takes place with the death of Christ on the cross. But regeneration above all, ‘so that we may become His children’. Men really become children of God when they are joined with Him. This wonderful event happens with Baptism, which makes us living limbs in Christ and admits us into his Church’.He then turns to the faithful and gives them homework. ‘I ask you again, who among you remembers the day they were baptised? Who remembers the date? Raise your hands… there are many…but not that many…’.Pope Francis says that ‘for those who do not remember it, I will give them homework: look for the date and cherish it in your heart. Ask your parents and godparents. The anniversary of your Baptism is a feast day; it will be a good day to thank God’. Baptism ‘makes us living limbs in Christ and admits us into his Church’. The Pope added that ‘at the beginning of the new year, it is good for us to remember the day of our Baptism. Let us rediscover the gift we received through that Sacrament, which gave us a new life, a heavenly life’.The Pope reiterates that ‘this happens through the Mother Church, which is modelled on Mother Mary. Thanks to Baptism, we are introduced into the communion with God and we are not at the mercy of evil and sin, but we receive love, tenderness and the mercy of the Heavenly Father’.

01/ 4/2015 - the vatican insider-Pope announces names of new cardinals: Only one Curia member, many pastors from the peripheries-Cardinals gathered in St. Peter's Basilica-At today’s Angelus Pope Francis read out the names of 20 bishops and archbishops who will be raised to the dignity of the cardinalate at the upcoming Consistory on February 14th. 15 of them will be eligible to vote in a Conclave-Andrea Tornielli

vatican city-Pope Francis has announced the names of the new cardinals who will receive the red biretta this coming February 14th. There will be 20 new “senators of the Church”,  from across 14 nations and five Continents. 15 of them are under 80 years old and would therefore be eligible to vote in a potential Conclave. Five of them are over 80 .

The new members of the College of Cardinals are as follows:
Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura
Archbishop Manuel José Macario do Nascimento Clemente, Patriarch of Lisbon (Portugal)
Archbishop Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, C.M., of Addis Abeba (Ethiopia)
Archbishop John Atcherley Dew of Wellington (New Zealand)
Archbishop Edoardo Menichelli of Ancona-Osimo (Italy)
Archbishop Pierre Nguyên Văn Nhon of Hà Nôi (Viêt Nam)
Archbishop Alberto Suàrez Inda of Morelia (Mexico)
Archbishop Charles Maung Bo, S.D.B., of Yangon (Myanmar)
Archbishop Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanij of Bangkok (Thailand)
Archbishop Francesco Montenegro of Agrigento (Italy)
Archbishop Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet, S.D.B., of Montevideo (Uruguay)
Archbishop Ricardo Blázquez Pérez of Vallodolid (Spain)
Bishop José Luis Lacunza Maestrojuán, O.A.R., of David (Panamá)
Bishop Arlindo Gomes Furtado, of Santiago de Cabo Verde (Archipelago of Cape Verde)
Bishop Soane Patita Paini Mafi of Tonga (Island of Tonga)

The five new cardinals who are over the age of 80, have “distinguished for their pastoral charity in the service of the Holy See and of the Church,” the Pope said and “they represent so many Bishops who, with the same pastoral solicitude, have given witness of love for Christ and for the people of God in particular Churches, in the Rome Curia, and in the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See.”

They are:José de Jesús Pimiento Rodriguez, Archbishop Emeritus of Manizales
Archbishop Luigi De Magistris, Major Pro-Penitentiary Emeritus
Archbishop Karl-Joseph Rauber, Apostolic Nuncio
Luis Héctor Villaba, Archbishop Emeritus of Tucumán
Júlio Duarte Langa, Bishop Emeritus of Xai-Xai

Francis seems to have respected the unwritten rule of not creating the current archbishop of a see with a retired cardinal under 80 years of age, a cardinal. Potential US candidates in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Chicago will not therefore be receiving the red biretta and neither will the new Archbishop of Madrid. Dominique Mamberti, the new Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, is the only Curia member appearing in the list of new cardinals. The Vatican’s former “minister of foreign affairs” was not yet a cardinal when  he carried out the only role within a Holy See dicastery where the title of cardinal is a given(as established in John Paul II’s  Apostolic Constitution “Pastor Bonus”)-None of the Pontifical Council presidents are to be created cardinals. Pontifical Councils are not ordinarily presided over by cardinals (except in the case of the ecumenism council led by Kurt Koch) and are going to be merged as part of the Curia reform process currently underway. The Librarian of the Holy Roman Church, the Frenchman, Jean-Louis Bruguès, did not feature in the list of cardinals-to-be either. Francis’ preference for diocesan bishops is therefore evident, as well as his focus on the southern parts of the world. With today’s list, Francis repeats a decision he took during the Consistory in February 2014, which is not to automatically name cardinals the archbishops of certain sees considered "cardinalatial sees". According to another unwritten rule, the archbishops of these sees were traditionally created cardinals at the next possible Consistory. Benedict XVI had already begun to stray from this unwritten rule, making the heads of Italian dioceses wait, when in the past they would have received the red biretta even if their predecessors had not reached the age of 80. Today’s list shows that Francis is continuing along this line both with regard to Italian “cardinalatial sees” and foreign ones, choosing to bring pastors from other dioceses in to the College of Cardinals. Two examples are the Italian Archbishops of Ancona and Agrigento, Edoardo Menichelli and Francesco Montenegro respectively.Father Federirco Lombardi, SJ, head of the Holy See Press Office, has published the following "notes" on the new Cardinals, whose names were announced by Pope Francis at the Angelus on Sunday:With respect to the number of 120 electors, there were 12 places “open” in the College today or in the coming months. The Pope has slightly exceeded this number, but remained very close to it, such that it is substantially respected. The most evident criteria is evidently that of universality. Fourteen different countries are represented, including some that do not currently have a Cardinal, and some that have never had one. If the retired Archbishops and Bishops are counted, eighteen countries are represented. There are no new Cardinals from North America (the USA or Canada) because they already have a significant number, and that number has remained stable during the past year. (There is a new Mexican Cardinal). The presence of countries that have never had a Cardinal (Capo Verde, Tonga, Myanmar) is noteworthy. These countries have ecclesial communities that are small or that represent a minority within their country. (The Bishop of Tonga is the President of the Episcopal Conference of the Pacific; the Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde is one of the most ancient African Dioceses; the Diocese of Morelia in Mexico is in a region troubled by violence.)-The fact that only one of the new Cardinals is from the Roman Curia is also notable, while “Roman” Cardinals remain about a quarter of the electors. It is evident that the Pope intends to consider the posts of Prefects of the Congregations and of some other very important institutions within the Curia – as, in this case, the Tribunal of the Signatura – as Cardinalatial posts. The new nominations confirm that the Pope is not bound to the traditions of the “Cardinalatial Sees” – which were motivated by historical reasons in different countries – in which the Cardinalate was considered almost “automatically” connected to such sees. Instead, we have several nominations of Archbishops and Bishops of sees that in the past have not had a Cardinal. This applies, for example, to Italy, Spain, Mexico, Panama…With regard to the retired nominees, the words of the Pope in his brief introduction should be noted: “They represent so many Bishops who, with the same pastoral solicitude” have served as pastors of Dioceses, but also in the Curia and in the diplomatic service. The cardinalatial nominations are intended, then, as a recognition given symbolically to some, but recognizing the merits of all.The youngest of the new Cardinals is Archbishop Tafi of Tonga (b. 1961), who will become the youngest member of the College of Cardinals. The oldest is Archbishop Pimiento Rodriguez, Archbishop emeritus of Manizales (b. 1919).

Pope Picks 15 New Cardinals To Reflect Diversity-Published on Sunday, 04 January 2015 21:20-malaysian digest

Pope Francis named 15 new cardinals Sunday, selecting them from 14 nations, including far-flung corners of the world such as Tonga, New Zealand, Cape Verde and Myanmar, to reflect the diversity of the church and its growth in places like Asia and Africa..Other cardinals hail from Ethiopia, Thailand and Vietnam. Another is form Sicily, where the Church in recent decades has been galvanizing public rejection of the Mafia. Referring to the Vatican, Francis told faithful in St. Peter's Square that the churchmen come "from every continent" and "show the indelible tie with the church of Rome to churches in the world."In addition to the 15 new cardinals who are under 80 and thus eligible to vote for the next pope, Francis bestowed the honor on five churchmen older than that. He said they distinguished themselves for their work in the Vatican bureaucracy, in diplomatic service in giving witness to their love of Christ and God's people. Those included men from the pope's native Argentina, Mozambique and Colombia.Speaking from a Vatican window to a crowd in St. Peter's Square, Francis made another surprise announcement. He said that on Feb. 12-13, he will lead of meeting of all cardinals to "reflect on the orientations and proposals for the reform of the Roman Curia," the Vatican's administrative bureaucracy.Francis is using his papacy, which began in March 2013, to root out corruption, inefficiency and other problems in the curia.- AP

UK's Cameron will move EU referendum forward if possible-Reuters-jan 4,15-yahoonews

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron said on Sunday he would like to bring forward a planned referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union from 2017 if possible.Under pressure from Eurosceptic members of his own party and the rise in popularity of the anti-EU UK Independence Party, Cameron has promised to renegotiate Britain's ties with the 28-nation bloc and try to claw back powers to London from Brussels. He has said he will hold a referendum in 2017 if his Conservatives win a national election in May."The referendum must take place before the end of 2017. If I think we could do that earlier I would be delighted. The sooner I can deliver on this commitment of a renegotiation and a referendum ... the better ," he told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show. With immigration a top issue for voters ahead of what looks set to be Britain's closest-fought election in modern history, Cameron has set out plans to restrict EU migrants' access to welfare payments in Britain.Cameron is expected to discuss his plans, which he has said will require EU treaty change, during a meeting with German leader Angela Merkel in London on Wednesday. Merkel has made clear she will not allow the EU's rules on freedom of movement for workers to be diluted.Although Cameron wants Britain to remain in a reformed EU, he has said he will "rule nothing out" if he cannot get the changes he wants.Cameron's center-right Conservatives have governed Britain in coalition with the center-left Liberal Democrats since 2010.Most opinion polls give the main opposition Labour Party a narrow lead ahead of the May election, but many analysts think no one party is likely to win an outright majority in parliament, possibly resulting in another coalition government of two or more parties.(Reporting by Kylie MacLellan; Editing by Gareth Jones)

Rumors that gravity will fail soon are greatly exaggerated-Rumors have been flying on social media that a blip in gravity will render us all weightless. Don't get floated, er, carried away by this hoax though.by Eric Mack-@ericcmack-January 3, 2015 3:14 PM PST-yahoonews

No, this is not a real tweet from NASA. Snopes.com-It is the Nigerian-prince email of the astrophysics world -- a persistent rumor that a rare planetary alignment involving the Earth, Jupiter and Pluto will cause a momentary fluctuation of gravity here, rendering us all weightless and able to briefly float in the air, or at least land more slowly should we attempt to dunk a basketball at that perfect moment. The latest iteration of this rumor tells us that this historic moment will occur Sunday morning at 9:47 a.m. Pacific Time. But if your memory is sharp enough to recall that the exact same rumor circulated about 12 months ago, then never came to fruition, perhaps you can join me in not strapping down all fragile and/or sharp objects as a precaution in advance of "zero G day."Like many a chain letter assuring you that Bill Gates or an African royal has some extra money just waiting for you to claim it, the notion that we will be temporarily granted a reprieve from the mysterious force that tethers us to this wonderful marble is nothing more than a hoax that has been passed down through the decades.First of all, no freaky planetary alignment or even an impromptu chorus line involving every rock in the asteroid belt would be able to turn off gravity here on Earth, even for a second -- the planets, especially the big ones like Jupiter with the most gravitational pull, are just too far away. And as for the inclusion of Pluto in the hoax, well this should give you some idea that it's provenance is less than serious. Pluto was, of course, demoted from planet to dwarf planet status several years ago, and it's way too far and way too small to have any noticeable impact on us.In fact the laughable idea of Jupiter and Pluto conspiring to disable gravity here was originally just that, a joke that dates back more than 40 years to an April Fool's Day prank attributed to the late British astronomer Patrick Moore. So, sorry folks, real science rains on the parade once again. Too bad, too, because without gravity the potential for epic cow-tipping and even cow-floating tales would have been historic. What would you do for a moment without gravity? Besides this cool trick with a Go Pro, that is.

METEORS STARS HIT THE EARTH

REVELATION 6:12-17
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars (POSSIBLY 7 OF PLIEADES AND ORION) of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come;(LAST HALF OF THE 7 YR TRIB) and who shall be able to stand?

REVELATION 8:8-13
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood:(bitter,Poisoned) and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.(poisoned)
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe,(1) woe,(2) woe,(3) to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

AMOS 5:7,18-20-6:1
7  (WOE 1) Ye who turn judgment to wormwood,(POISON) and leave (CAST) off righteousness in the earth,(GROUND)
18 (Woe 2) unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.
19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
20 Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
AMOS 6:1
1 (Woe 3) to them that are at ease in Zion,(JERUSALEM) and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!(WOE 3 IS THIRD WAVE OF WW3 WHEN ALL NATIONS MARCH TO JERUSALEM FOR BATTLE)

JOB 9:6-9 (COMPARE TO REV 6:12-17)
6 Which shaketh the earth out of her place,(QUAKE) and the pillars thereof tremble.
7 Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not;(THE SUN BLACKEND) and sealeth up the stars.(WHICH NOW FALL FROM HEAVEN)
8 Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.(THESE SAME MEORITES MIGHT POISON ALL THE EARTHS WATERS ALSO)
9 Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.(AND IT IS INTERESTING GOD THRONE IS IN THE NORTH.AND FROM THE SOUTH THESE METEORITES WILL BE FALLING ON EARTH)

COULD THE FALLING STARS-PLANETS BE PLEIADES AND ORION-JUST MY THOUGHT
Historically, the Pleiades were seen as a group of seven stars – its brightest stars: Alcyone, Atlas, Electra, Maia, Merope, Taygeta and Pleione are visible to the keen naked eye. However modern observations show that this most famous of open clusters is comprised of several hundred stars wreathed in intricately structured nebulosity. As the Pleiades cluster is close to the ecliptic (within 4°) in the constellation of Taurus it is a spring and autumnal 'seasonal' object in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Being close to the ecliptic, there are frequent occultations of the cluster with the Moon and planets. To our superstitious ancestors these were, no doubt, portentious events. Likewise, the apparent annual motion of the cluster would have been highly significant. The heliacal (near dawn) rising of the Pleiades in spring in the northern hemisphere has from ancient times augured the opening of the seafaring and farming season: while its dawn autumnal setting marked the season's end.And also Spring and fall are Bird migration seasons in Israel. It would not surprise me if Israeli wars are not fought around the time of the Pleiades-Orion happenings. The Bible contains three direct references to the Pleiades in Job 9:9 and 38:31, and Amos 5:8, and a single indirect reference in the New Testament. This latter passage (Revelation 1:16) describes a vision of the coming of the Messiah – who holds, in his right hand, seven stars.Well since the meteors do hit the earth in the last 6 months of the 7 year tribulation period.I believe.Jesus' return will be only 6 months or so from happening. So this Pieades (meteorites) earth hit would be warning the world that Jesus is about to return to earth literally.
AMOS 5:8 (FORGET ABOUT PLANET X-NIBURU)(HERES THE FALLING STARS HERE)
8 Seek him (GOD) that maketh the seven stars (plieades) and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death (darkness) into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:

JOB 38:31-33
31 Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? (BIND AND LOOSE THESE STARS)(GOD GIVES US A HINT-THESE ARE THE ONES THAT FALL TO EARTH)
32 Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth? (GOD TELLS US-I CAN THROW THESE STARS TO EARTH-I AM IN CONTROL OF ALL THINGS)

Quadrantid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight: How to See It-SPACE.com-By Joe Rao January 3, 2015 9:11 AM-YAHOONEWS

The annual Quadrantid meteor shower each January provides one of the most intense annual meteor displays, with a brief, sharp maximum lasting only a few hours. And while the 2015 Quadrantids peak tonight (Jan. 3), the bright moonlight may outshine these dazzling "shooting stars."The Quadrantid meteor shower of 2015 appears to radiate from the northeast corner of the constellation of Boötes, the Herdsman, so you might expect them to be called the "Boötids." But back in the late 18th century, there was a constellation in the same area called Quadrans Muralis, the "Mural or Wall Quadrant" (an astronomical instrument). It is a long-obsolete star pattern, invented in 1795 by astronomer J.J. Lalande to commemorate the instrument used to observe the stars in his catalogue. But the name survives in the Quadrantid meteors.Adolphe Quetelet of Brussels Observatory discovered the shower in the 1830s, and several astronomers in Europe and America noted these meteors shortly afterward. They were christened Quadrantids, and even though the constellation from which these meteors appear to radiate is no longer officially recognized in astronomy, the shower's original moniker continues to this day.

2015: A poor Quad year

Unfortunately, this will not be a good year to look for the "Quads." Chalk it up to poor timing. First, the peak of this year's shower is predicted for 10 p.m. EST on Jan. 3. But on Jan. 5, the moon will turn full. That means that all through the overnight hours of Saturday, Jan. 3 into Sunday, Jan 4, the sky will be lit up with brilliant moonlight. That moonlight will squelch all but the brightest of meteors. This particular meteor shower display is at its best just before the break of dawn, about 6 a.m. local time, when the radiant of this shower — the point from which the meteors appear to emanate — is ascending the dark northeastern sky.If you do head out to look for meteors, remember to bundle up! It is, after all, wintertime. As one astronomer said prior to a midwinter meteor watch, "Take the advice of a man whose teeth have chattered on many a winter's night: Wrap up much more warmly than you think is necessary!"

Crumbs of a dead comet?

At greatest activity, 60 to 120 shower members per hour should be seen. However, the Quadrantid meteor shower influx is sharply peaked: Six hours before and after maximum, these blue meteors appear at only half of their highest rates. This means that the stream of particles is a narrow one, possibly derived relatively recently from a small comet. In fact, in 2003, astronomer Peter Jenniskens of NASA, found a near-Earth asteroid (2003 EH1) that seemed like it was on the right orbit to have made the Quadrantids. Some astronomers say that this asteroid is really a piece of an old, "extinct" comet, perhaps a comet that was recorded by Chinese, Korean and Japanese observers during the years 1490-91. Maybe that comet broke apart, and some of the pieces became the meteoroids that make up the Quadrantid stream, some scientists say.

Next year could be a winner!

As bad as it is for the Quadrantids in this New Year, it will be a much different story in 2016.The peak of the shower next year is set for 3 a.m. EST on Jan. 4, which favors eastern North America. And the moon will be at a much more favorable phase: a waning crescent just 29-percent illuminated and much less of a hindrance to meteor viewing. Given clear skies, it could turn out to be one of the best meteor displays of 2016. Mark your calendars! Editor's note: If you capture a stunning photo of the Quadrantid meteor shower, or any other amazing night sky view, and would like to share it with Space.com for a story or gallery, send images and comments in to managing editor Tariq Malik at space photos @space.com.Joe Rao serves as an instructor and guest lecturer at New York's Hayden Planetarium. Australian wildfire threat eases as cool front moves in-Associated Press-By KRISTEN GELINEAU-jan 4,15-yahoonews

SYDNEY (AP) — Cooler conditions on Sunday were helping hundreds of firefighters working to contain a massive wildfire that had forced thousands of people to flee their homes in southern Australia.A dozen homes have been destroyed by the fire in the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, with another 20 also feared lost, state Premier Jay Weatherill said. Twenty-two people have been injured, though none seriously, Weatherill said.Hot and windy conditions that had fanned the flames since Friday eased on Sunday, prompting officials to lower the fire's danger rating from the highest level. Firefighters were working to clear roads and police hoped to return some residents to their homes Sunday morning, Police Commissioner Gary Burns said."We will be reopening areas once it's safe to do so," Weatherill said. "However, there remains serious risks associated with falling trees and falling power lines."Residents of 19 communities had been forced to flee their homes as the fire raged. A large number of cats and dogs were killed when a kennel was destroyed in the blaze.Several firefighters were treated for minor conditions such as smoke inhalation, but no major injuries were reported, the Country Fire Service said.In neighboring Victoria state, rain had helped firefighters bring another dangerous fire that destroyed one home under control. All fire warnings across the state had been downgraded on Sunday and residents were returning to their homes.Destructive wildfires are common across much of Australia during the summer months. In 2009, wildfires killed 173 people and destroyed more than 2,000 homes in Victoria.

Mogadishu (AFP) - The government of war-torn Somalia has moved to reassure residents that there was no outbreak of Ebola in the country, dismissing rumours that a man had brought the virus back with him from Guinea."As soon as we heard the rumours of a case of Ebola virus in Somalia, we acted quickly and decisively to isolate the alleged victim, a Somali citizen named Abdulkadir Jinow Barow, and those who had been in contact with him," Health Minister Ali Mohamed Mohamud told reporters. The minister hit out at "irresponsible reporting without the checking of facts or sources by some elements of the media, combined with the wildfire spreading of rumours on social media", saying the rumours "could have caused widespread panic" in the Horn of Africa nation."The man did not have the Ebola virus," the minister told reporters, speaking alongside the purported Ebola victim -- who also insisted he was "perfectly healthy"."He has now been given the all clear and we can state categorically that there has been no outbreak of Ebola in Somalia," the minister said. The man falsely reported to have been infected with Ebola in Guinea, where he ran a business, said he was "very confused and upset" by the rumours.

Avian flu found in SE Wash. backyard flock; 2nd appearance in state; no public health danger
Associated Press-January 3, 2015 12:04 AM-yahoonews

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Avian influenza has been found in a backyard poultry flock in southeast Washington after previously showing up in wild birds in the northwest part of the state, but there is no immediate public health concern, state officials said Friday. The virus has not been found in commercial poultry in Washington or elsewhere in the United States, state Agriculture Department officials said. They say the virus poses no apparent threat to humans but highly pathogenic strains can be deadly to domestic poultry and sometimes to wild birds.Avian influenza does not affect poultry meat or egg products, which remain safe to eat, the agency said.Officials say the owner of the flock of about 150 birds near Benton City contacted the Agriculture Department after losing nearly 50 birds in the past week. The state Agriculture Department says it has activated a multi-agency response and will work closely with U.S. Department of Agriculture officials. The highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza virus confirmed in the flock is similar to the virus found in a Washington captive gyrfalcon last month, although additional testing is being conducted to identify the strain. The falcon had been fed wild birds killed by hunters. A separate strain of the H5 virus was found in a wild duck. Both viruses have been found in other parts of the world and have not caused any human infection to date, the USDA has said.Canadian officials say an avian influenza outbreak in British Columbia has spread to more than a half dozen poultry farms and affected about 245,000 birds. The Benton County backyard flock includes domestic waterfowl with access to the outdoors."We have not diagnosed the virus anywhere else in our domestic poultry population, but the presence of the virus in migratory waterfowl is a risk to backyard poultry," state veterinarian Dr. Joe Baker said Friday in a statement. "One step owners should take is preventing contact between their birds and wild birds."Also last month, federal agricultural officials confirmed the presence of a strain of the H5 virus in guinea fowl and chickens in a 100-bird backyard poultry flock in the southern Oregon community of Winston.
