A grassroots Old City initiative has turned the Old City of Jerusalem – where the miracle of the Hanukkah lights took place over 2,150 years ago – into the city of Menorahs this week.Families throughout the Jewish Quarter built their "dream" Menorahs – Hanukkah candelabra – and have placed them outside their homes, on the same streets and alleys walked by the original Hasmoneans on their way to purifying the Holy Temple over two millennia ago.In addition, professional artists and craftsmen who live in the Quarter fashioned Menorahs of all types, which are placed in "strategic" locations throughout the neighborhood.The goal, according to organizer and Old City resident Yosef Steinberg, is "to attract and interest tourists in down-to-earth, traditional Jewish life in the Old City of Jerusalem." He said that groups from all over the world come to visit, and "we, the residents – and not just their tour guides – have something to share with them as well."The Menorahs competed in a friendly, community-wide contest on Hanukkah, and the most interesting and tourist-attracting ones received prizes.The Menorah project, which began last year, features an improved version this year - and next year promises to be even more advanced. He was Unesco's special envoy during the 2000's. His most famous book, "The Shape of the Holy: Early Islamic Jerusalem" (1996), details the role of Islam in defining Jerusalem. It is a book full of descriptions of the mosaics of the Dome of the Rock, complemented by a set of photographs. It was meant to support and give credence to Islam's supercessionism of Jewish Jerusalem.Unesco has made many mistakes in the past, but this particular abuse of authority and great blindness is so massive, so abominable and so utterly incomprehensible. If an entity like Unesco deliberately rewrites history into fiction to promote beliefs that are contradicted by the facts, it is evil and needs to be confronted as such. That is why we, the people involved in journalism, writing and opinion making, and the ordinary people who still care about the fate about the Jewish people, should set up an international campaign of moral and political pressure and positive intimidation to bring Unesco over to the side of Jewish people, not the side against them.The Temple Mount, this most important treasure of humanity, is in danger. BRUSSELS - Most Europeans believe the EU faces a brighter future, according to a new Eurobarometer poll which also says Irish people are the bloc’s greatest optimists.Nearly eight in 10 Irish citizens said they were optimistic about the EU’s future, slightly higher than 75 percent in Malta, and 74 percent in Poland and Romania, respectively.Having exited a €67 billion EU bailout last December, Ireland now has the fastest growing economy in the EU and is expected to see further growth of nearly 5 percent in 2015.Meanwhile, Greeks, Cypriots, and Italians were the only three countries where a majority of voters were pessimistic about the EU’s future, in Greece’s case by a 60 percent to 38 percent margin.Voters from the 28 EU countries were surveyed in November as part of Eurobarometer’s Autumn poll.Poles had the most favourable view of the EU, with six in 10, followed by 59 percent of Romanians, 53 percent in Ireland, and just over half in Bulgaria and Luxembourg.Across the bloc, 39 percent had a positive view of the EU, while 37 percent have a neutral image and 22 percent a negative image.Greeks and Cypriots also had the dimmest view of the EU.The high level of unemployment remains the greatest concern among most Europeans, followed by the economic situation.After a disappointing year, the eurozone economy is expected to expand by 0.8 percent in 2014, while joblessness across the bloc remains almost unchanged at 12 percent. Immigration was named by 18 percent of respondents as the most important issue facing the EU but was named as the most important in Malta, where it was named by 57 percent of those surveyed, and the UK and Germany. Both the British and German governments have unveiled plans to crack down on so- called welfare tourism over the past year.May’s European election campaign appears to have had an impact on the number of Europeans believing that they have a say in EU decision making, which increased by over 10 points to 40 percent.However more than half (53 percent) still say that their voice doesn't count. Despite the European Parliament’s increased powers and the 'Spitzenkandidat’ experiment, which saw the main political groups pick a candidate for Commission president, turnout was still fractionally down at 42 percent.In the same Eurobarometer survey taken last year, most Europeans felt they had no voice in decision making by a 66 percent to 29 percent margin.

Paris (AFP) - The French government stepped up security nationwide Tuesday following three bloody attacks in as many days, which killed one man and injured 25.While the motives behind the incidents -- a knife attack on police and two cars driven into passers-by -- remain unclear, the violence has jarred nerves after repeated jihadist threats against France over its fight against Islamic extremism.Prime Minister Manuel Valls stressed that the three incidents were "distinct" and urged the French to keep calm, while assuring that security would be heightened."Two hundred to 300 extra soldiers will be deployed in the coming hours," on top of the 780 troops already engaged in anti-terrorism surveillance, he said on television.Security patrols will also be increased in shopping areas, city centres, rail stations and on public transport, he added.The violence began on Saturday when a man was shot dead after attempting to enter a police station in the central town of Joue-les-Tours while shouting "Allahu Akbar".The 20-year-old attacked three officers with a knife, two of whom were seriously injured.Then on Sunday, a driver ploughed into pedestrians in Dijon in the east, injuring 13 people while also shouting the same Islamic phrase, which means "God is greatest" and has been used by extremists during violent attacks.The 40-year-old man, who has a history of mental illness, was charged with attempted murder on Tuesday, Dijon prosecutor Thierry Bas said.The last attack took place Monday night when a man drove his car into the middle of a bustling Christmas market in the western city of Nantes, injuring 10 people before stabbing himself repeatedly and being arrested.A 25-year-old man later died of injuries sustained in the attack, local prosecutor Brigitte Lamy said Tuesday, adding that the injured assailant, 37, was not yet fit to be questioned.Lamy said a notebook found in his car contained "confused" remarks about his "hatred of society" and "risk of being killed by the secret service". He also claimed his family was disparaging him on the Internet, she said.Sources close to the investigation said he had a drinking problem and had been involved in a case of theft and receiving stolen goods in 2006.

Dijon (France) (AFP) - A driver shouting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") ploughed into pedestrians in eastern France Sunday, injuring 11 of them, just a day after a man yelling the same words was killed in an attack on police officers.Two of the people injured in the car attack in the city of Dijon were in a serious condition, a police source said, adding that the driver had been arrested."The man, born in 1974, is apparently unbalanced and had been in a psychiatric hospital," a source close to the investigation told AFP, adding that "for now his motives are still unclear".The man had targeted groups of passersby at five different locations in the city on Sunday evening in a rampage that lasted around half an hour, the police source said."Nine people were lightly injured and two others seriously but their lives do not appear to be in danger," the source added.Witnesses told police that the driver shouted "Allahu Akbar" and "that he was acting for the children of Palestine", a source close to the investigation said.Police sources said the driver was known to police for petty offences dating back to the 1990s.On a street in the city centre traces of blood and attempts by authorities to cover it up with sand could be seen, AFP journalists there said. Algiers (AFP) - The Algerian army said on Tuesday it had killed the head of a militant group that beheaded a French tourist after it had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.The body of Abdelmalek Gouri, who claimed responsibility for the beheading of Frenchman Herve Gourdel in September, was identified after an operation in the town of Isser "that allowed us to eliminate three terrorists", the army said.An operation lasting three months had seen 3,000 Algerian troops mobilised to catch Gourdel's killers.The confirmation of Gouri's death came after the Nahar private television network said soldiers had killed him and two other militants late on Monday in Isser, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) east of Algiers.The army on Tuesday released an image of what appeared to be Gouri's dead body. He was pictured lying on his back wearing tracksuit bottoms and a black sweater, surrounded by blood stains.Another handout image showed Gouri as a clean-shaven young man with curly hair.Jund al-Khilafa, or "Soldiers of the Caliphate", beheaded Gourdel on September 24 in a gruesome video posted online after France rejected the group's demand to halt anti-IS air strikes in Iraq.On Saturday, the army said it killed three other Islamist gunmen in a mountainous area near Sidi Daoud, and that one of them was a "dangerous criminal" wanted since 1995.Soldiers also seized a large quantity of guns, ammunition and explosives during the operation.On December 11, Justice Minister Tayeb Louh announced that soldiers had killed two Jund al-Khilafa members implicated in Gourdel's murder.An Algerian court has launched legal proceedings against 15 people, including Gouri, suspected of participating in the beheading.Gourdel, a 55-year-old mountain guide, was kidnapped in September while hiking in a national park that was once a draw for tourists but became a sanctuary for Islamists.

A grassroots Old City initiative has turned the Old City of Jerusalem – where the miracle of the Hanukkah lights took place over 2,150 years ago – into the city of Menorahs this week.Families throughout the Jewish Quarter built their "dream" Menorahs – Hanukkah candelabra – and have placed them outside their homes, on the same streets and alleys walked by the original Hasmoneans on their way to purifying the Holy Temple over two millennia ago.In addition, professional artists and craftsmen who live in the Quarter fashioned Menorahs of all types, which are placed in "strategic" locations throughout the neighborhood.The goal, according to organizer and Old City resident Yosef Steinberg, is "to attract and interest tourists in down-to-earth, traditional Jewish life in the Old City of Jerusalem." He said that groups from all over the world come to visit, and "we, the residents – and not just their tour guides – have something to share with them as well."The Menorahs competed in a friendly, community-wide contest on Hanukkah, and the most interesting and tourist-attracting ones received prizes.The Menorah project, which began last year, features an improved version this year - and next year promises to be even more advanced. Unesco didn’t inspect the irremediable damage caused by the digs the Waqf perpetrated on the Temple Mount. But the UN’s cultural agency challenged Israel’s re-construction of a pedestrian bridge.Where was Unesco when the Muslim “authorities” damaged the historic archeological remains of Solomon’s Stables beneath the Temple Mount? He was Unesco's special envoy during the 2000's. His most famous book, "The Shape of the Holy: Early Islamic Jerusalem" (1996), details the role of Islam in defining Jerusalem. It is a book full of descriptions of the mosaics of the Dome of the Rock, complemented by a set of photographs. It was meant to support and give credence to Islam's supercessionism of Jewish Jerusalem.Unesco has made many mistakes in the past, but this particular abuse of authority and great blindness is so massive, so abominable and so utterly incomprehensible. If an entity like Unesco deliberately rewrites history into fiction to promote beliefs that are contradicted by the facts, it is evil and needs to be confronted as such. That is why we, the people involved in journalism, writing and opinion making, and the ordinary people who still care about the fate about the Jewish people, should set up an international campaign of moral and political pressure and positive intimidation to bring Unesco over to the side of Jewish people, not the side against them.The Temple Mount, this most important treasure of humanity, is in danger. BRUSSELS - Most Europeans believe the EU faces a brighter future, according to a new Eurobarometer poll which also says Irish people are the bloc’s greatest optimists.Nearly eight in 10 Irish citizens said they were optimistic about the EU’s future, slightly higher than 75 percent in Malta, and 74 percent in Poland and Romania, respectively.Having exited a €67 billion EU bailout last December, Ireland now has the fastest growing economy in the EU and is expected to see further growth of nearly 5 percent in 2015.Meanwhile, Greeks, Cypriots, and Italians were the only three countries where a majority of voters were pessimistic about the EU’s future, in Greece’s case by a 60 percent to 38 percent margin.Voters from the 28 EU countries were surveyed in November as part of Eurobarometer’s Autumn poll.Poles had the most favourable view of the EU, with six in 10, followed by 59 percent of Romanians, 53 percent in Ireland, and just over half in Bulgaria and Luxembourg.Across the bloc, 39 percent had a positive view of the EU, while 37 percent have a neutral image and 22 percent a negative image.Greeks and Cypriots also had the dimmest view of the EU.The high level of unemployment remains the greatest concern among most Europeans, followed by the economic situation.After a disappointing year, the eurozone economy is expected to expand by 0.8 percent in 2014, while joblessness across the bloc remains almost unchanged at 12 percent. Immigration was named by 18 percent of respondents as the most important issue facing the EU but was named as the most important in Malta, where it was named by 57 percent of those surveyed, and the UK and Germany. Both the British and German governments have unveiled plans to crack down on so- called welfare tourism over the past year.May’s European election campaign appears to have had an impact on the number of Europeans believing that they have a say in EU decision making, which increased by over 10 points to 40 percent.However more than half (53 percent) still say that their voice doesn't count. Despite the European Parliament’s increased powers and the 'Spitzenkandidat’ experiment, which saw the main political groups pick a candidate for Commission president, turnout was still fractionally down at 42 percent.In the same Eurobarometer survey taken last year, most Europeans felt they had no voice in decision making by a 66 percent to 29 percent margin.

Paris (AFP) - The French government stepped up security nationwide Tuesday following three bloody attacks in as many days, which killed one man and injured 25.While the motives behind the incidents -- a knife attack on police and two cars driven into passers-by -- remain unclear, the violence has jarred nerves after repeated jihadist threats against France over its fight against Islamic extremism.Prime Minister Manuel Valls stressed that the three incidents were "distinct" and urged the French to keep calm, while assuring that security would be heightened."Two hundred to 300 extra soldiers will be deployed in the coming hours," on top of the 780 troops already engaged in anti-terrorism surveillance, he said on television.Security patrols will also be increased in shopping areas, city centres, rail stations and on public transport, he added.The violence began on Saturday when a man was shot dead after attempting to enter a police station in the central town of Joue-les-Tours while shouting "Allahu Akbar".The 20-year-old attacked three officers with a knife, two of whom were seriously injured.Then on Sunday, a driver ploughed into pedestrians in Dijon in the east, injuring 13 people while also shouting the same Islamic phrase, which means "God is greatest" and has been used by extremists during violent attacks.The 40-year-old man, who has a history of mental illness, was charged with attempted murder on Tuesday, Dijon prosecutor Thierry Bas said.The last attack took place Monday night when a man drove his car into the middle of a bustling Christmas market in the western city of Nantes, injuring 10 people before stabbing himself repeatedly and being arrested.A 25-year-old man later died of injuries sustained in the attack, local prosecutor Brigitte Lamy said Tuesday, adding that the injured assailant, 37, was not yet fit to be questioned.Lamy said a notebook found in his car contained "confused" remarks about his "hatred of society" and "risk of being killed by the secret service". He also claimed his family was disparaging him on the Internet, she said.Sources close to the investigation said he had a drinking problem and had been involved in a case of theft and receiving stolen goods in 2006.

They can be receptive to, or influenced by, propaganda messages or the power of images," he said.Authorities have for months been on tenterhooks over the threat of violence inspired by Islamic extremism.In September, the radical Islamic State group that controls swathes of Iraq and Syria urged Muslims around the world to kill "in any manner" those from countries involved in a coalition fighting its jihadists, singling out the French.Among instructions for killing civilians or military personnel was to run them over with a car or truck.But while the probe into Saturday's attack is leaning towards extremist motives -- the Burundian convert to Islam who assaulted police had posted an Islamic State flag on his Facebook page -- the car rampages appeared to be the work of unstable individuals.The prosecutors in charge of probing both incidents insisted they were not "terrorist acts".The assailant in Dijon had been to psychiatric hospitals 157 times, local prosecutor Marie-Christine Tarrare told reporters.She said the man told police he ploughed into people out of a sudden "outburst of empathy for the children of Chechnya" and had shouted "Allahu Akbar" to give him courage. Nevertheless, the government faced criticism Tuesday that it was minimising the threat at a time when more than 1,000 nationals are thought to be involved in jihad on home soil, or in Syria and Iraq.The slain assailant in Joue-les-Tours, Bertrand Nzohabonayo, was not on a domestic intelligence watch-list but his brother Brice is well known for his radical views and was arrested in Burundi soon after the incident.Nzohabonayo's mother had told authorities last year that she was worried about Brice's radicalisation and "the influence he could have on his brother Bertrand," said Paris prosecutor Francois Molins, whose office is in charge of the probe.The attacker in Dijon, meanwhile, had taken an interest in religion and started wearing a djellaba -- a long robe worn in Muslim countries -- just a week ago, according to his mother.

Dijon (France) (AFP) - A driver shouting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") ploughed into pedestrians in eastern France Sunday, injuring 11 of them, just a day after a man yelling the same words was killed in an attack on police officers.Two of the people injured in the car attack in the city of Dijon were in a serious condition, a police source said, adding that the driver had been arrested."The man, born in 1974, is apparently unbalanced and had been in a psychiatric hospital," a source close to the investigation told AFP, adding that "for now his motives are still unclear".The man had targeted groups of passersby at five different locations in the city on Sunday evening in a rampage that lasted around half an hour, the police source said."Nine people were lightly injured and two others seriously but their lives do not appear to be in danger," the source added.Witnesses told police that the driver shouted "Allahu Akbar" and "that he was acting for the children of Palestine", a source close to the investigation said.Police sources said the driver was known to police for petty offences dating back to the 1990s.On a street in the city centre traces of blood and attempts by authorities to cover it up with sand could be seen, AFP journalists there said. Nearby, victims and their families were being cared for at a hospital.Dijon prosecutor Marie-Christine Tarrare refused to comment when contacted by AFP.Prime Minister Manuel Valls took to Twitter to express "solidarity" with those injured in the attack.France is still reeling from a suspected radical Islamic attack on Saturday that saw a French convert to Islam shot dead after attacking police officers with a knife while also reportedly crying "Allahu Akbar" in the central town of Joue-les-Tours.

The assailant, Burundi-born French national, Bertrand Nzohabonayo seriously injured two officers -- slashing one in the face -- and hurting another.The 20-year-old attacker also cried "Allahu Akbar" during the assault, said a source close to the case speaking on condition of anonymity.The assault prompted the government to step up security at police and fire stations nationwide.Nzohabonayo had previously committed petty offences but was not on a domestic intelligence watch-list although his brother is known for his radical views and once pondered going to Syria, the source said.The anti-terror branch of the Paris prosecutor's office has opened a probe into that attack, with the line of inquiry focusing on whether it was motivated by radical Islam.The weekend incidents in France come as governments around the world brace for so-called "lone wolf" attacks by individuals returning from waging jihad abroad, or who are simply following Islamic State group calls for violence in the countries involved in a coalition fighting the militants in Iraq and Syria.The group has repeatedly singled out France for such attacks, most recently in a video posted on jihadist sites this week.Last week in Australia, an Iranian-born Islamist with a history of extremism and violence entered a cafe and held people hostage for 16 hours before being killed. Algiers (AFP) - The Algerian army said on Tuesday it had killed the head of a militant group that beheaded a French tourist after it had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.The body of Abdelmalek Gouri, who claimed responsibility for the beheading of Frenchman Herve Gourdel in September, was identified after an operation in the town of Isser "that allowed us to eliminate three terrorists", the army said.An operation lasting three months had seen 3,000 Algerian troops mobilised to catch Gourdel's killers.The confirmation of Gouri's death came after the Nahar private television network said soldiers had killed him and two other militants late on Monday in Isser, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) east of Algiers.The army on Tuesday released an image of what appeared to be Gouri's dead body. He was pictured lying on his back wearing tracksuit bottoms and a black sweater, surrounded by blood stains.Another handout image showed Gouri as a clean-shaven young man with curly hair.Jund al-Khilafa, or "Soldiers of the Caliphate", beheaded Gourdel on September 24 in a gruesome video posted online after France rejected the group's demand to halt anti-IS air strikes in Iraq.On Saturday, the army said it killed three other Islamist gunmen in a mountainous area near Sidi Daoud, and that one of them was a "dangerous criminal" wanted since 1995.Soldiers also seized a large quantity of guns, ammunition and explosives during the operation.On December 11, Justice Minister Tayeb Louh announced that soldiers had killed two Jund al-Khilafa members implicated in Gourdel's murder.An Algerian court has launched legal proceedings against 15 people, including Gouri, suspected of participating in the beheading.Gourdel, a 55-year-old mountain guide, was kidnapped in September while hiking in a national park that was once a draw for tourists but became a sanctuary for Islamists.

He was later decapitated by Jund al-Khilafa, which was formed at the end of August after splintering from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and pledging allegiance to IS.His killing followed calls by IS for Muslims to kill Westerners whose nations have joined a campaign to battle the jihadists in Iraq and Syria.The defence ministry said in a statement it had received information that led to forces pursuing "a dangerous terrorist group travelling in a vehicle", before killing Gouri and two others.A source familiar with the operation told AFP that the bodies of three suspected militants were taken to a local hospital, where Gouri's death was confirmed by his father early on Tuesday.Violence involving Islamists has fallen considerably since the 1990s civil war, but groups linked to AQIM continue to launch attacks in the northeast, mostly on security forces.Gouri, alias Khaled Abou Souleimane, was the former right-hand man of AQIM leader Abdelmalek Droukdel, and is suspected of helping to organise suicide attacks on the government palace and against a UN contingent in Algiers in 2007.He is also thought to have masterminded an April attack that killed 11 soldiers in Iboudrarene, the same region where Gourdel was kidnapped.The town of Isser in the Kabylie area is home to a large officer training school that was targeted in a 2008 suicide attack that killed dozens.Gourdel's body has yet to be found, despite a widespread search by the army which has already found a Jund al-Khilafa hideout and identified the location where a video was filmed in August showing the group pledge fealty to IS.Another two "dangerous terrorists" were killed on Tuesday in Akerrou, 120 kilometres southeast of Algiers, the army said.

Berlin (AFP) - A record 17,000 anti-Islamic protesters rallied for their tenth demonstration in as many weeks Monday in eastern Germany, celebrating the rise of their far-right populist movement by singing Christmas carols.Germany has for weeks grappled with the emergence of the "Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the Occident" or PEGIDA, whose ranks in the city of Dresden have swelled rapidly from just a few hundred in October.About 4,500 counter-demonstrators marched through the city under the slogan "Dresden Nazi-free", warning that there was no space for racism and xenophobia in the country that perpetrated the Holocaust.Most PEGIDA followers insist they are not Nazis but patriots who worry about the "watering down" of their Christian-rooted culture and traditions. They often accuse mainstream political parties of betraying them and the media of lying.Braving cold and wet weather, they gathered outside the historic Semperoper concert hall for their pre-Christmas recital. Police put their numbers at about 17,500, up from the previous high of 15,000 a week earlier.The management of the opera house signalled its distaste by turning the building's lights off and flying flags outside that read: "Open your eyes", "Open your hearts", "Open doors" and "Human dignity is sacrosanct", the first line of the national constitution.The Protestant bishop of Saxony state, Jochen Bohl, said the PEGIDA followers, by singing Christmas carols, were seeking "to exploit a Christian symbol and a Christian tradition" for political purposes, German news agency DPA reported.
