Next Tuesday, President Shimon Peres is scheduled to award German Chancellor Angela Merkel Israel's Presidential Medal of Distinction, Israel’s highest civilian honor.Spokespeople from the Presidential Residence disclosed that the
German Chancellor is receiving the award for her "unwavering commitment
to Israel's security, her promotion of educating the public against anti-Semitism and racism, and for her extraordinary and moral leadership."Peres decided to award Merkel the prize after consultation with the
Presidential Medal of Distinction Committee, headed by former Supreme
Court justice Meir Shamgar, and with Israel’s fifth president, Yitzchak
Navon.“Dr. Angela Merkel is an exceptional leader with lofty values and
deeply held moral beliefs that come to expression, among other things,
in her warm and friendly relationship to the state of Israel and the
Jewish people,” they stated. The committee for the Presidential Medal of Distinction was created
by Peres two years ago. So far, the prestigious prize has been given to
17 people, among them Henry Kissinger, United States President Barack Obama, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, former US President Bill Clinton, and Eli Wiesel.
Iran’s President, Hassan Rouhani, on Wednesday said that Jerusalem should “be liberated from the yoke of Israel.”The comments were made during a meeting in Tehran between Rouhani and the Speaker or the Palestinian Authority (PA) parliament, Salim Zanoun, and were reported by the semi-official Fars news agency.During the meeting, according to Fars, Rouhani expressed the
support of the Iranian government and nation “for the oppressed people
of Palestine”, and called for the “liberation of the Holy Quds
(Jerusalem) from the yoke of Israel.”“One of the wishes of the Iranian nation is liberation of the Holy
Quds,” the Iranian President was quoted as having said, adding that he
hoped “the Palestinian nation and the entire Muslim world will find a
serious solution to this occupation through unity and integrity”.Zanoun, for his part, praised the Iranian nation as a great nation, and said, according to Fars,
“I hope that during your presidency you will see a great development in
the Muslim world, especially with regard to Palestine.”Wednesday’s meeting marks the second time in recent weeks that
Iranian officials have met PA officials. In January, Jibril Rajoub, a
senior member of the Fatah movement, visited Tehran.Rajoub vowed
during the visit that Fatah "will not stop the resistance until the
establishment of an independent Palestinian government" in eastern
Jerusalem.
Rouhani, who has tried to woo the world with “an attack of smiles” and by claiming he is moderate, has made anti-Israel statements just like his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.Last week, Rouhani warned that Iran would issue a harsh response against any attackers, including Israel. The Iranian government also released a statement in which it called "to remove the cancerous tumor - Israel."Shortly after being elected last summer, Rouhani called Israel an "old wound" that "should be removed." Iranian media later claimed that Rouhani’s remarks were distorted.

US: Peace framework will recognize Israel as Jewish state
American ambassador endorses key Netanyahu demand, saying Arab world will have to accept ‘nation state of the Jewish people’
February 21, 2014, 12:15 pm
2-The Times of Israel
US Ambassador to Israel Dan
Shapiro asserted on Friday that the framework peace deal currently being
negotiated by US Secretary of State of John Kerry will include
Palestinian recognition of Israel as “the nation state of the Jewish
people.”Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence that Palestinian Authority
President Mahmoud Abbas recognize Israel’s Jewishness has been a
sticking point in negotiations, with the Palestinians refusing to accede
to a demand that would effectively do away with Palestinian hopes for a
“right of return” for refugees and their descendants.“It’s too early to know what compromises and
concessions both sides will make,” Shapiro told Israel Radio on Friday
morning. “But we do believe… that Israel deserves recognition as a
Jewish state. That has always been US policy — that Israel is a Jewish
state and should remain a Jewish state. That will be one of the elements
of the framework we’re working on.”
Leading Palestinians made clear their
opposition to the demand this week, insisting that by introducing the
Jewish factor, Israel was drawing a red line that could doom
negotiations.“I remember the days when we were told, ‘All
you need is to get the PLO to recognize Israel, and recognize Israel’s
right to exist in safe and secure boundaries,’” said Hanan Ashrawi, a
prominent member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The
Palestinians did just that, she noted, as part of the 1990s interim
peace agreements.“The Jewishness of the state of Israel… this is a new
addition,” she told reporters on Wednesday. But Shapiro sounded confident
that, in a
final-status agreement, the Palestinians — indeed, the entire Arab world
— would have to accept that Israel was a Jewish state and would remain
as such.“I assume that under the framework that we’re
currently preparing — that we’ll see that recognition of Israel as a
Jewish state, as the nation state of the Jewish people” he said. “And in
the end, we’ll need to know that this is the end of the conflict, and
that’s one way of verifying that… that everyone in the region and all of
[Israel’s] neighbors will accept that there is a nation state of the
Jewish people here, in the Jewish homeland.”Shapiro was alluding to the
fact that by
recognizing Israel as a Jewish state under a permanent peace deal, the
Palestinians would be forfeiting any future demand for a right of
return. In a speech to Israeli students on Sunday,
Abbas left open an option for recognizing Israeli as a Jewish state,
saying the PA could accept such a move if it was initiated by the United
Nations. On Thursday, Shapiro wouldn’t comment on the prospect of a
UN-led decision to ratify Israel’s Jewishness, saying rather that there
were several options and that it was up to the two sides to arrive at a
compromise. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Settlement freeze ‘unacceptable,’ right-wing MKs warn PM
Likud, Yisrael Beytenu and Jewish Home representatives call on Netanyahu to resist pressure to halt West Bank construction
February 20, 2014, 7:42 pm
5-The times of Israel
The specter of a West Bank
settlement freeze is raising serious concerns among prominent Knesset
members on the right, several of whom warned Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu on Thursday that halting construction in any Jewish town or
city beyond the Green Line would be “totally and utterly unacceptable.”
In
an official letter sent to Netanyahu, 21 MKs from the Likud, Yisrael
Beytenu and Jewish Home parties stressed that they would not accept any
framework agreement that would prevent Israelis from expanding the
Jewish presence in the West Bank.“These days, we’ve received news of a demand
from Israel to agree to freeze the construction and planning of
settlements in Judea and Samaria,” the letter read. ”We oppose any kind
of freeze, including a settlement freeze outside of recognized blocs,
and we will see any such Israeli commitment as utterly unacceptable.”Coalition chairman Yariv Levin (Likud), one of
the MKs to sign the letter, said any attempt by US officials to impose a
freeze on settlements would be heavily opposed by Israel’s right wing,
and argued that Jews had a moral right to reside in any part of the West
Bank.“American pressure to press a sword to the
neck of the settlements will be met with total resistance,” Levin
said. ”It is our right and our duty to settle and build in all
historical parts of the Land of Israel, and we stand firm on this
right.”Israel’s Army Radio reported Wednesday
that the Obama administration has asked Israel to impose an unofficial
settlement freeze outside of major settlements blocs if a framework
agreement is agreed upon. Netanyahu’s office did not comment on the
report. But he has said in the past that a freeze he approved for 10
months from November 2009 was a one-time gesture.Ministers and members of Knesset from the
right are expected to participate in a march to the Jordan Valley on
Friday, in order to express their opposition to final-status security
arrangements that would call for the removal of Israeli forces or
settlements from the area in the future.Earlier this month, thousands of demonstrators took part in a march to the controversial E1 corridor,
linking Jerusalem with Ma’ale Adumim to the east, in order to voice
their opposition to the ongoing US-brokered peace talks between Israel
and the Palestinians.In November,
Netanyahu ordered a pullback of Housing Ministry plans to construct some
20,000 settlement units — an unprecedented number — including 1,200
homes in the E1 corridor. He had said the move to push forward tens of
thousands of new units over the Green Line was a “meaningless step” that
would create pointless tension with the international community.According to Housing Ministry statistics
published in November, 7 percent of new Israeli construction sites
erected this year were located in the West Bank, and the number of
building projects across the Green Line rose by nearly 130% compared to
2012.
Israeli recognition demand sparks Jewish state debate
Netanyahu’s insistence that Palestinians accept country’s Jewish status complicates peace efforts, ignites heated internal dispute
February 21, 2014, 2:44 am
15-The Times of Israel
AP — Is Israel “the Jewish
state”?The
answer may seem as obvious as the Star of David on the Israeli flag.
Yet the question is starting to complicate the ambitious US effort to
ram through a peace deal between the Palestinians and Israel.A
broad-based group of Israelis plans to lobby
the Knesset to declare the country, for the first time, a Jewish state
by law. And Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded that the
Palestinians recognize Israel’s Jewish status explicitly as part of any
agreement.“This is the Jewish land. This is the Jewish
state,” he said in a speech this week to assembled US Jewish leaders.
“When we make an agreement it is an agreement between the nation state
of the Jewish people and a nation state of the Palestinian
people.”Leading Palestinians made their opposition
clear this week, insisting that by introducing the Jewish factor, Israel
is drawing a red line that could doom negotiations.“I remember the days
when we were told, ‘All
you need is to get the PLO to recognize Israel, and recognize Israel’s
right to exist in safe and secure boundaries,” said Hanan Ashrawi, a
prominent member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The
Palestinians did just that, she noted, as part of the 1990s interim
peace agreements.“The Jewishness of the state of Israel…. this
is a new addition,” she told reporters Wednesday. “We are working to
establish a pluralistic, democratic, inclusive state in Palestine. Not
an exclusive state based on religion, ethnicity or whatever.”The
Palestinians reject Israel’s demand for
pragmatic reasons as well: Embrace of Israel as a Jewish state would
amount to giving up the dreams of Palestinian refugees to return to lost
properties — the so-called “right of return,” which is a central
sticking point in peace talks. They also say it would undermine the
rights of Israel’s own Arab minority, the 20 percent of Israel’s 8
million people who are themselves ethnic Palestinians.Even some Israelis
suspect the demand is
intended to complicate — but the idea has wide support nonetheless. To
be criticized even for the desire to have a state of their own — a dream
allowed people the world over, from the Irish to the Iranians — chafes
many Jewish Israelis.Israeli academic Avraham Diskin, a
self-professed lifelong dove, said a Palestinian refusal meant
perpetuating the conflict. “This is the minimal test to show that their
face is to peace,” he said. Both sides are waiting to see whether the
notion shows up in the framework proposal US Secretary of State John
Kerry is expected to table in coming weeks. The US usually doesn’t
recognize countries by
ethnicities, but Deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the
US does recognize Israel as a Jewish state. In his State of the Union
speech to Congress last month, US President Barack Obama said the goals
of the negotiations launched last July were “dignity and an independent
state for Palestinians, and lasting peace and security for the State of
Israel – a Jewish state that knows America will always be at their
side.”Kerry himself implied support for the idea of a
Jewish state by advising Israelis they must pull out of
Palestinian-populated lands occupied in the 1967 war in order to retain a
strong Jewish majority.Indeed, if Israelis eventually hand over
significant territories to a Palestinian state, the motivation will
indeed stem largely from a desire to unload their Palestinian population
and leave themselves with a strong Jewish majority. An Israel that
controls the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza — the areas occupied in
1967 — would have some 12 million people roughly evenly divided between
the two groups.Writing in the Haaretz newspaper on Thursday,
liberal columnist Ari Shavit said, “The deal on the table is clear: A
Jewish state in exchange for the 1967 borders.” That, Shavit and others
say, means the Palestinians must forget about a return by Arab refugees
and their descendants to Israel. But the whole notion of a Jewish state
is a
complicated one. By shining a strong light on a matter that lives more
comfortably in the shadows, Israel may be rekindling some awkward
questions: Are the Jews a nation — or individuals who share a religion?
Should a religion have a state? Should a state have a religion? And
beyond that lies a bigger issue still: Is
the idea of a nation-state — with members of that nation fretting over
how to stay dominant numerically — not somehow unbecoming in the age of
globalization? The original Zionists of the late 19th century
were mostly secular people inspired by the rise of European nations on
the ashes of empires. Convinced the Jews needed a state of their own as
well, they settled on the Holy Land, from which Jews were expelled by
the Romans two millennia ago.In November 1917 the Zionist movement
persuaded Britain — who would soon receive a League of Nations mandate
to rule Palestine — to issue a declaration supporting “the establishment
in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.” Thirty years
later, with British colonial rule nearing its end, the newly established
United Nations voted for partition of the area into independent “Arab
and Jewish States.”Israel’s 1948 Declaration of Independence was
essentially a national statement, proclaiming that Palestine — referred
to interchangeably as “the land of Israel” — was “the birthplace of the
Jewish people.” Zvi Hauser, who until recently served as Netanyahu’s
Cabinet secretary, lamented this week that this declaration was never
followed by a constitution cementing the country’s status as the Jewish
state.“The Jewish people is not just a religion. It is also a national
group that has a right to self-actualization,” he said.In fact, the
question of what it means to be a
Jew is a matter of debate — abroad and in Israel itself, where Orthodox
rabbis fight to retain a monopoly over religious conversions that have
the unusual corollary outcome of constituting a membership ticket to a
“people” as well.“It’s hard to compare the matter to other
countries because of the unique aspect of Judaism,” said Malcolm
Hoenlein, the executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of
Major American Jewish Organizations.“It is not just a religion or a
nationality or
an identity — it is all in one,” said Hoenlein, who organized the
conference that Netanyahu addressed.Israel’s law of return combines the
heritage
and religion definitions. It grants citizenship to anyone with at least
one Jewish grandparent, as well as to converts who have no Jewish
heritage but are recognized by the Orthodox rabbis.Consensus on the
matter is extremely hard to find. Many Jews around the world see their
identity
as a primarily a matter of religion. Plenty of Israelis think that a
“Jewish state” should be more of a theocracy, outlawing work on the
Sabbath, for example. At the same time, many Jews in Israel and
elsewhere are not at all religious and view themselves as Jewish simply
because they were born to Jewish parents — a situation not unlike that
of ethnic Irish or Japanese. Most confounding, perhaps, are the ethnic
divisions that persist between the Jews themselves.Israel’s founders
were overwhelmingly European
Jews, and that group — known as Ashkenazim — was numerically dominant
among Jews before the Nazi Holocaust, diverse yet cohesive enough to
lend credence to a national movement. But the reality today in Israel is
diverse.
Almost half of the Jewish population of 6 million is descended from the
Arab world — their background, history, and even appearance often
starkly different from their European cohorts. Tensions over everything
from music to food to prayer styles lurk just beneath the surface. In
this situation, it is not uncommon for
Israelis to refer to each other, not always with admiration, by distant
country of origin — as “Moroccans” and “Yemenites,” or “Bulgarians” and
even “Americans.”As they observe all this, skepticism among
Palestinians — whose communities were displaced by the Zionist movement —
seems easy to understand.“Judaism is a religion like Islam and
Christianity,” said Mustafa Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian
legislator. “Israel is a state, a nationality that represents all the
groups and ethnicities in Israel — including the Palestinians.”

Israel-Jordan sign $500 million natural gas deal
Accord may grow into $30-billion partnership for Israel to become Jordan’s main supplier; deal with Turkey also possible

Israeli and Jordanian officials
signed a deal Wednesday under which Israel will supply $500 million
worth of gas to the Hashemite kingdom from the Tamar natural gas field
in the Mediterranean.The
supply is set to start in 2016, and to continue over a 15-year period.
Ultimately, however, the deal may be expanded to a $30-billion mammoth
partnership, under which Israel would become the major supplier of
Jordan’s gas needs, Israel’s Channel 2 news reported.It said that a key
broker of the deal was Amos
J. Hochstein, the US deputy assistant secretary of state for energy
diplomacy, a child of Israeli parents, who made 14 visits to Jordan to
help pave the way for the agreement. The TV report said Israel’s
President Shimon Peres also helped the deal along.Under the deal, Tamar
will supply 66 billion
cubic feet to Jordan’s Arab Potash and its affiliate, Jordan Bromine, at
their facilities near the Dead Sea, according to a statement issued by
Texas-based Noble Energy, which owns 36 percent of the Tamar field. The
Jordanians turned to Israel because their
supply of natural gas from Egypt had been halted by repeated terrorist
attacks on the gas pipeline from Egypt, the TV report said.Israel
decided last year to export 40 percent of the country’s offshore gas
finds. In March 2013, Israel began pumping natural
gas from the Tamar deposit — discovered in 2009 and located some 90
kilometers (56 miles) west of Haifa — which holds an estimated 8.5
trillion cubic feet of natural gas.In addition to Tamar, in 2010 an even
larger
deposit, Leviathan — which boasts an estimated 16-18 trillion cubic feet
of gas — was discovered 130 kilometers (81 miles) west of Haifa. It is
expected to become operational in 2016.The decision on gas exports grew
out of
conclusions published by the Tzemach Committee headed by former Water
and Energy Ministry director general Shaul Tzemach. The committee,
formed in late 2011, had called on Israel to keep the first 450 billion
cubic meters for domestic use, and allow the export of up to half of any
additional amount extracted from the proven reserves.
Israel is also exploring possible gas exports
to Turkey, the TV report said Wednesday, despite the current strained
relations between Jerusalem and Ankara.“This deal will pave the way for additional
export projects which could enhance regional cooperation as well as
provide additional supply to the domestic market and enhanced security
of supply through development of additional reservoirs and
infrastructure,” said Lawson Freeman, Noble’s Eastern Mediterranean vice
president.

Britons will never back preemptive strike on Iran, MP says
Conservative Robert Halfon says UK is so scarred by Iraq war, it will only support resort to force if it is directly attacked
February 21, 2014, 6:33 am

The member of Parliament
representing Winston Churchill’s former constituency said that the
British public will never countenance military intervention to prevent
Iran attaining nuclear weapons.Robert
Halfon, the Conservative MP for Harlow, said more broadly that Britons
are so scarred by what they regard as having being drawn into war
against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq on false pretenses that they will not now
support the use of military force unless Britain itself or a British
target overseas is directly attacked.Halfon, who was visiting
Israel this week in a
delegation of Conservative Friends of Israel, told The Times of Israel
in an interview that the vote in the House of Commons last August
against a resort to force in Syria, following President Bashar Assad’s
use of chemical weapons against his own people, was “a tragic day for
our country.” The vote, a crushing defeat for Prime Minister David
Cameron, reflected the “scarring” effect the Iraq war has had on the
British psyche, he said, with Britons believing that were misled about
Saddam’s non-conventional weapons capacity. Cameron’s defeat was also a
result of “political opportunism” by the opposition Labour Party. That
vote, in turn, Halfon said, had a
“massive effect” on US President Barack Obama, who subsequently changed
course, having indicated that a “punitive” strike against Assad was
imminent. “The one dependable ally of the US was saying no,” Halfon
said.Instead, the US accepted a Russian-mediated
initiative under which Assad has agreed to give up his entire chemical
weapons capability, but Halfon rejected the idea that this represented
an enviable result. He said he was not yet convinced that Assad would
indeed shed his entire WMD capacity and capability, that the US and UK
positions sent a dismal signal to dictators everywhere, and that Iran
perceived Obama’s behavior as signalling weakness — which in turn gave
it confidence to continue to pursue its nuclear program. He stressed that
while he had emphatically backed military intervention in Syria, “my
constituents were all against. They see the body bags coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said.Halfon, 44, who grew up in a Jewish family in
north London, won election to Parliament in 2010 in the seat formerly
held by Churchill, Britain’s inspirational World War II prime minister.
He said he lamented that in today’s Britain, there was both an
“importing and exporting” of Islamist terrorism. Islamic extremists,
“indoctrinated in Britain, are going to Syria to fight,” and radical
Islamist preachers were coming into the UK to teach hatred. “We were
only able to extradite [radical preacher] Abu Qatada [to face terrorism charges in Jordan] after a long struggle,” he noted. He said Britain was grappling with “lots” of
terrorist plots hatched by Muslim extremists and that a Kurdish leader
who visited the UK recently and went to a mosque in the north of England
told him that “a mosque that radical would have been closed down in
Kurdistan.” (In the worst recent Islamist terror attack in the UK, in
July 2005, four British-raised Muslims carried out simultaneous suicide
bombings on a London bus and three underground trains, killing 52 people
and injuring 700.)Unfortunately,
Halfon charged, the right-wing UKIP political party exploits the
Islamist danger to “bash moderate Muslims,” while the political left
“appeases” the extremists.Halfon said Israel’s image in the UK has
improved a little since a low point at the time of May 2010 Mavi Marmara
raid, when Israeli naval commandos, commandeering a Turkish vessel
seeking to break the security blockade of Gaza, opened fire and killed 9
activists after coming under attack. “Since the Arab Spring erupted,
people are registering that Israel is the region’s only democracy, and
seeing on TV the oppression in Arab countries, notably by Assad,” he
said.Nonetheless, among those pushing boycotts of
Israel, there was no change in the level of hostility — “but all that,
don’t forget, is organized by Israel’s enemies… There’s not been one
[major] demonstration over the killings of 140,000 Syrians, he said.
Relating to British charity Oxfam’s criticism
of Scarlett Johansson for representing Israel’s SodaStream, with its
West Bank settlement factory employing Jews, Israeli Arabs and
Palestinians, he wondered why Oxfam does not boycott the likes of Russia
and China. Noting that its protests over SodaStream had prompted the US actress to step down from her role as an Oxfam ambassador, Halfon said “SodaStream is an enlightened company, and Johansson is a hero.”
Newfound Jewish roots gave Kerry a ‘deep’ bond with Israel
Secretary of state, who only learned his grandparents were Jews in 2004, says he understands Israelis’ reluctance to sign a deal
February 20, 2014, 11:32 pm
16-The Times of Israel
US Secretary of State John Kerry
says his feelings toward Israel changed 10 years ago, after he found
out that that he had Jewish grandparents.“It’s
a connection that’s deep. I lost a great-uncle in the Holocaust and a
great-aunt. I never knew that until then. To learn that, after years of
being passionate about ‘never again,’ with respect to the Holocaust, and
then to understand that you are biologically and personally connected
to that, is very moving,” he said in an interview aired on Thursday by
Israel’s Channel 2.“Israel itself has a special connection to me,
not just because of that personal, now-known connection, but more
importantly because of the amazing journey of the Jewish people,” he
said in the interview, which was conducted last Tuesday at the State
Department. “And now I’ve learned that, I have got a better sense of
that.”Kerry first found out about his Jewish
ancestry in 2004, when he was running for president against George W.
Bush. Both his father’s parents were born Jews and converted to
Christianity because of anti-Semitism, and they changed their name from
Cohen to Kerry when they immigrated to the United States.Asked by the interviewer, Ilana Dayan, whether
he felt that Israelis were still defined by their tragedies to the
extent that those events made them hesitant to take the “leap of faith”
necessary to withdraw from the West Bank and agree to the establishment
of a Palestinian state, Kerry answered in the affirmative.“But,” he added, “here is what I want to
emphasize: I think my job is to try to help create a situation where the
realities of the agreement are such that it’s not such a leap of faith.
I don’t want this to be a leap of faith. I want this to be a leap of
reason. A leap of rationality and of choice, based on a very
understandable and tangible set of guaranties about security and other
things.”If that could be achieved, Kerry continued,
“then we take some of the emotion away… even though it will be for some
always a huge emotion, because some people have very different views
about greater Judea and Samaria — I know all of that. But I also know
that over 70 percent of the people of Israel believe in a two-state
solution.”The secretary of state said that he sometimes
spends hours on the phone with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and
understands him. But he was hesitant to say whether he believes
Netanyahu would agree to the kind of concessions a peace agreement would
require. “If we’ve answered all of the challenges of security for
Israel, if he has secured the nation state of Israel as the home of the
Jewish people, if he has secured recognition and secured the refugee
issue — properly dissolved — I hope he will,” Kerry said.Netanyahu’s primary concern is the security of
Israeli civilians, Kerry stressed. “I have said this to [Palestinian
Authority] President [Mahmoud] Abbas: The primary issue for any Israeli
is to know that if they make an agreement, they are safer and stronger
because of the agreement than they were before they made it. And that
goes contrary to past experience in pulling out of Lebanon and pulling
out of Gaza.”Kerry hinted that settlers might not have to
relocate under the terms of a peace deal. Asked about the personal price
that a settler might have to pay when required to leave his home as a
result of an accord, Kerry replied that he was not sure this would be
necessary.“I have no argument with anyone in Israel who
says that no deal is better than a bad deal. I say that myself,” he
said. “I’m not in the business of trying to put together a bad deal.”Kerry dismissed criticism of him from
right-wing Israeli politicians, particularly Defense Minister Moshe
Ya’alon, who said the top US diplomat was “messianic and obsessive.”“You know, those are judgments that other
people may or may not have fun making in this process. I’m doing my
job,” he said. Kerry claimed he was not insulted by Ya’alon’s remarks.
“I think I am committed, and I’m determined.”The secretary of state declined to comment on
his gut reaction in January to Yedioth Ahronoth’s publication of
Ya’alon’s scathing criticism, which targeted the US mediation of the
peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.“That’s not the way I operate. I’m an optimist
and I am a believer in possibilities,” he said. “People who know me
know that when I sink my teeth into something, if I get the bit between
my teeth, I try to get it done.
