FREEZING COLD-VOLCANO-QUAKES-RADIATED COWS

KING JESUS IS COMING FOR US ANY TIME NOW. THE RAPTURE. BE PREPARED TO GO.

OZONE DEPLETION JUDGEMENT ON THE EARTH DUE TO SIN

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Giant Sunspot AR1944 turns towards Earth

One of the largest sunspots in years, AR1944, is turning towards Earth. The sunspots are spread over an area 25 times bigger than the Earth's surface and will remain visible for the rest of the week, before rotating away from the planet. The active region contains dozens of dark cores, the largest of which is big enough to swallow three planet Earths. It's so big, sky watchers are noticing it as a blemish on the solar disk at sunset. CME is expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 7th, possibly sparking G1-class geomagnetic storms on Jan. 7th and 8th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. That sunspot has the potential to disrupt transmission/reception of radio signals on the foreground antenna.

EARTH DESTROYED WITH THE EARTH(BECAUSE OF SIN AND GODLESS PEOPLE)

GENESIS 6:11-13
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.(WORLD TERRORISM,MURDERS)(HAMAS IN HEBREW IS VIOLENCE)
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence (TERRORISM)(HAMAS) through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

Indonesian volcano erupts more than 50 times

Indonesian authorities have extended a danger zone around a rumbling volcano in the country's west after it erupted more than 50 times, spewing blistering gas farther than expected. The eruptions on Saturday sent searing lava streaming out of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province and down the southeastern slopes up to 5km away."This outpour is the biggest we've seen in all the recent eruptions," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. This outpour is the biggest we've seen in all the recent eruptions.Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, National Disaster Mitigation Agency. The volcano's danger zone to the southeast was extended to seven kilometres from five.On Sunday, the volcano was still spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 4,000 metres, but no casualties were reported.Sinabung, the province's highest volcano, has been erupting relentlessly since September.More than 20,000 people have been evacuated from nearby villages and brought into temporary shelters."Of course we are worried about our houses, villages and also our farms that are damaged, but we cannot do anything here," said Purnama Surbakti, who owns a house at the slope of the volcano.
New shelters
The local government and Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency have tried to increase shelter space to accommodate the growing number of evacuees."We are providing new places for them, but they prefer to stay with their relatives, neighbours and also close friends. We have provided 11 new temporary shelters for them already," said Prince Meyer Putong, head of the emergency response team.Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in the world's fourth-most populated country, straddling major tectonic fault lines known as the Ring of Fire. The most deadly eruption in recent years was of Mount Merapi in 2010, near the densely populated city of Yogyakarta in central Java. More than 350 people were killed.

STORMS HURRICANES-TORNADOES

LUKE 21:25-26
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;(MASS CONFUSION) the sea and the waves roaring;(FIERCE WINDS)
26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear,(TORNADOES,HURRICANES,STORMS) and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth:(DESTRUCTION) for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.(FROM QUAKES,NUKES ETC)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Wind chill warnings are also in effect for northwestern Ontario, as another blast of Arctic air invaded the region Saturday night. Temperatures are expected to plummet to –30 C to –35 C. With wind chills, it will feel more like –40 C Saturday night and into Sunday morning.
Much of Saskatchewan and Manitoba are under extreme wind chill warnings, where residents are shivering through temperatures in the –40s C — feeling closer to –50 C in the wind.
The potentially record-low temps are heightening fears of frostbite and hypothermia.
  • Police advise motorists, including all officers, to stay off the roads as dangerous whiteout conditions brought on by snow and wind continue to lash much of Atlantic Canada. Here, a pedestrian in Halifax braves the blizzard.

The deep freeze in the Prairies is nothing new to residents of Winnipeg who have been hearing about frostbite warnings for four weeks now. The kind of cold people are experiencing can freeze skin in under 10 minutes.
One of the coldest places in Canada on Saturday night was Newfoundland, which was hit with a strong blizzard Friday, followed by wind chills that made it feel like –30 C.
St. John's Mayor Dennis O'Keefe said Sunday he is recommending that schools and post-secondary institutions be kept closed until at least Wednesday.
"It gives us, as a city, time to get out there and deal with the streets and deal as much as we can within the next few days with sidewalks and everything else," he said.
He also recommended that people help out by "shovelling out the catch basins" as the province is due for heavy rain and warmer temperatures.
"That brings another challenge," O'Keefe told CBC News in an interview Sunday afternoon. "Whether there will be possible flooding in neighbourhoods."
O'Keefe also said he's worried about the swing in temperatures and mixed precipitation which could load down the transmission lines with ice and trigger another round of massive outages.

Rolling outages in N.L.

Hundreds of thousands of Newfoundlanders were already left without power following a fire at a substation when the blizzard hit Friday.
Newfoundland Power is trying to bring power back to homes that have been in the dark since 9 a.m. Saturday by unplugging some other parts of the system, according to CBC's Peter Cowan.
"So they are trying to balance all of that right now. So even people who get power back, it is not that reliable," said Cowan in St. John's Sunday afternoon.
The provincial utility is no longer saying that power would be restored for all customers by Tuesday, according to Cowan.
"They are saying everything is changing fairly quickly, so there is no real word on when everything will be back," he said.
Newfoundlanders are asked to conserve energy, such as not running the driers or the dishwashers. But they are also warned that the conservation effort could go on for weeks while the system stabilizes, Cowan said.
About 35,000 Newfoundland Power customers remained without electricity midday Sunday. About 190,000 had lost power at the height of the outage on Saturday.
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale said Sunday her government will be asking large consumers of energy to conserve power to close or reduce operations over the next few days as energy conservation will be paramount.

Newfoundland Power said 60-minute rolling outages are now taking place to conserve power as the system load grows. The agency tweeted out a message to its clients, urging them to help with the power problem: "turn down thermostats, turn off lights, reduce hot water usage and unplug unnecessary appliances. Thank you."
Several flights were cancelled in St. John's and the city announced it was opening a warming centre after roughly half the island lost power. Other municipalities opened public buildings for people needing warmth as some coped with digging out from as much as 40 centimetres of snow.

'Flash freeze' for parts of Central Canada

Elsewhere in the country, people in southern Ontario are bracing for another snow storm. Snow is already falling in some areas but it is expected to intensify later in the day and into Sunday night.
Some areas will be hit with mixed precipitation. Toronto and the Ottawa region are under a freezing rain warning. Areas northwest of both cities could see anywhere from 10 to 20 centimetres of snow.
CBC Meteorologist Janine Baijnath warned of a "flash freeze" in the Toronto area in the wake of freezing rain, which could cause transportation problems among other things.
Freezing rain warnings have also been issued for most of eastern Ontario for Sunday evening and into Monday morning.Across much of Quebec, the extreme cold has given way to warmer temperatures. However, now there is a freezing rain warning in effect for the southern and central parts of the province just as many people get back on the road at the end of the holiday season.South of the border, bitterly cold temperatures blowing into the U.S. Midwest and Northeast in the coming days are likely to set records.
About 1,200 flights had been cancelled Sunday at O'Hare and Midway international airports in Chicago, aviation officials said, and there also were cancellations at Logan International Airport in Boston and Tennessee's Memphis and Nashville international airports. The frigid air began Sunday and was expected last for at least two more days. The cold mass of air could be funnelled as far south as the Gulf Coast because of what one meteorologist called a "polar vortex," a counterclockwise-rotating pool of cold, dense air.

Life-threatening' cold bites U.S. Midwest

Reuters
MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Residents of the Midwestern United States on Sunday braced for the coldest weather in two decades, temperatures that forecasters warned would be life-threatening.Icy conditions snarled travel across the region and thousands of flights were canceled or delayed, some officials preemptively closed schools, and at a New York City airport a plane skidded off a runway into snow days after the Northeast was hammered by the first winter storm of the season."The coldest temperatures in almost two decades will spread into the northern and central U.S. today behind an arctic cold front," the National Weather Service said in an advisory posted on its website on Sunday. "Combined with gusty winds, these temperatures will result in life-threatening wind chill values as low as 60 degrees below zero (Fahrenheit/ -51 Celsius)."In weather that cold, frostbite can set in on uncovered skin in a matter of minutes, experts warned. But fans of the NFL's Green Bay Packers vowed to brave the weather to see a playoff matchup that could stand as one of the coldest ever games in league history."It's going to be a challenge to stay warm, but we're up to it," said Braun, who plans to bring her 14-year-old son Gryphon to the game. She is bundling up for the game, wearing four layers on top and three layers on the bottom, along with a two pairs of socks and two pairs of gloves."We will see the game to the end unless there was some type of emergency," she said. "Being a Packers fan is in your blood, hereditary even."Officials at the Packers' Lambeau Field promised fans two free hot cocoa or coffee drinks during the game, ESPN reported.
Elsewhere in the Midwest, forecasters warned Chicago and Indianapolis could see overnight lows of -12 F (-24 C), Minneapolis -29 F (-34 C) and Fargo, North Dakota, -31 F (-35 C). The coldest temperature reported in the lower 48 states on Sunday was -36 F (-38 C) in Crane Lake, Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service.
The northeast was forecast to see a brief thaw before intense cold returned late Monday.About half of all flights arriving and departing Chicago O'Hare International Airport had been canceled on Sunday, according to FlightAware, which tracks flight statistics.Nationwide, about 2,855 flights had been delayed nationwide by midday and 2,332 had been canceled. In New York City, John F. Kennedy International Airport was closed for a couple of hours Sunday morning after a Bombardier jet skidded off a taxiway soon after landing. The Delta Connection flight had landed safely after arriving from Toronto with 35 passengers on board, and no injuries were reported, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which runs the airport, said.Officials in several states asked residents to use extra precautions when outdoors.Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has ordered all public schools in the state closed on Monday to protect children from dangerously cold weather.Chicago schools will be open Monday despite the cold, but officials, in a statement, advised parents to "use their own discretion in deciding whether to send their child to school."Between six inches and one foot of snow was predicted from Chicago to Detroit, AccuWeather said, while icy sleet and rain was forecast for much of the Northeast.(Writing by Jonathan Allen; Editing by Scott Malone and Steve Orlofsky)

21  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

THE RESULT OF THIS EVOLUTION CULT BELIEF-GOD JUDGES

24  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:(FORNICATION & ADULTERY SEX SINS)
25  Who changed the truth of God (CREATION) into a lie,(EVOLUTION) and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

2ND JUDGEMENT- IF THEY STILL INSIST ON EVOLUTION INSTEAD OF CREATION-HOMOSEXUALITY (SODOMITE RAINBOW GROUPERS)

26  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:(LESBIENS AND BEASTIALITY)
27  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men (SODOMITE RAINBOW GROUPERS) working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.(AIDS AND DEATH)

3RD JUDGEMENT IF THEY STILL INSIST EVOLUTION OVER CREATION-AND HATE GODS WORD THE BIBLE-COMPLETE SINNING NON STOP

28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29  Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30  Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31  Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32  Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Evolution: Plenty of people believe, but at what cost?

NASHVILLE (BP) -- Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe in human evolution and one-third reject the idea, according to a Pew Research Center study highlighting a battle of worldviews with implications for multiple facets of life.Sixty percent of those surveyed said "humans and other living things have evolved over time," while 33 percent said "humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time," Pew reported Dec. 30.About half of those who reported a belief in human evolution said it's "due to natural processes such as natural selection" while 24 percent said "a supreme being guided the evolution of living things for the purpose of creating humans and other life in the form it exists today."Pew's study contrasts with a Gallup poll from 2012 that found 46 percent of Americans believe that God created humans in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years. In that poll, about a third of Americans said they believe humans evolved but with God's guidance, while 15 percent said God had no part in the process.Casey Luskin of the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture told Baptist Press the Pew data could be analyzed to mean 57 percent of Americans hold a view compatible with Intelligent Design, that the universe is the product of intelligence rather than blind chance."If you define evolution as mere 'change over time,' then sure, most Americans (about 60 percent) believe humans have 'evolved,'" Luskin said. "But if you further define evolution as 'unguided natural selection,' then apparently only about a third of Americans agree with that type of evolution. "If we interpret the poll correctly, well over half of Americans -- at least 57 percent -- take a view that fits within Intelligent Design and don't support Darwinism," Luskin said.

Ken Ham, president and founder of Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum, which are grounded in the belief that God created the world in seven literal days and that the earth and universe are thousands –- not billions –- of years old, told Baptist Press the way Pew phrased the questions determined how people answered and even he would have said living things have not existed in their present form since the beginning of time. "I believe there have been a lot of changes in animals because there has been a lot of speciation within a kind," Ham said. But overall, he is encouraged that the study indicates that a strong number of people have not been persuaded by the human evolution theories."In a culture where generations of kids are being taken through a public education system where there's been legislation to protect them from even hearing about creation and to teach them evolution as fact -- that we still have a third of the population who would stand basically very similar to where we stand, I think that shows there's been a significant influence in this culture to teach people about [God as creator]," Ham said. The cultural impact of creation ministries such as Answers in Genesis, Ham said, can be seen in such statistics as more than 1 million people per month visiting the AiG website, 2 million people who have visited the Creation Museum near Cincinnati, and multiple millions who have encountered literature supporting creation. The Pew study, though, does reflect that evolution is pushed overwhelmingly in the education system, Ham said, and a significant number of people believe God used evolution to create the world. "I think part of that reflects on the church," Ham said, noting, "The research we've done also shows the majority of our seminary professors, Christian academics, would allow for evolution and/or [creation over] millions of years, and that has influenced a lot of people."

To change Americans' views on creation and evolution going forward, Ham cited two needs: to educate children and to reach the church. Secularists, he said, have learned that the key is to capture the minds of children by teaching evolution in schools, and creationists need to be similarly involved.Toward that end, this year the Creation Museum is offering free admission to children 12 and younger, and Answers in Genesis is producing apologetics curricula to address the origin of the earth and man. Also, the Creation Museum is hosting a debate Feb. 4 between Ham and Bill Nye "The Science Guy," the former host of a popular science television show for youths. In an online video last year, Nye said teaching creationism was bad for children, and the video was viewed nearly 6 million times on YouTube, the Associated Press reported.Ham continued, "We need to be reaching the church because I believe the state of the nation reflects the state of the church. Because we know that so many Christian leaders don't take a stand on Genesis as they should and are being influenced to believe in evolution -- millions of years and so on -- we have a big emphasis in this ministry to reach Christian leaders, to reach churches."We're finding more and more the average person in church wants to believe God's Word but hasn't been instructed how to and doesn't know how to defend their faith, and they really love our ministry and then put pressure on their pastors and other Christian leaders and colleges concerning these issues," Ham said. "There's a problem from the leadership down [in the church] and we need to address it."

How an origins view impacts life

Whether a person embraces evolution or creation has implications for all of life, Ham said, because an atheistic evolutionist rejects God as the absolute authority and determiner of right and wrong, good and bad. Morality then is relative."In the Book of Judges it says when they had no king, no absolute authority to tell them what to do, they all did what was right in their own eyes," Ham said.Secularists try to portray creationists as blaming gay marriage, abortion and other social ills on the teaching of evolution, Ham said, but "we don't blame those things on evolution."Sin is the cause of those problems, Ham said, but there is a connection with the teaching of evolution. If generations of students are taught that life is the result of natural processes, he said, then the value of life is reduced, leading to weakened views on abortion, suicide and even euthanasia. "Marriage? Why should marriage be a man and a woman? That comes from the Bible," Ham said. "Why should it even be two? That comes from the Bible. Why shouldn't they be allowed to do whatever they want to do? We even see that. There have been articles recently about what they call polyamory where men and women get together and have whatever relationships they want. Why not polygamy?"But if a person believes the creation account in the Bible and believes the Bible is the absolute authority, then God determines right and wrong, Ham said. Jesus, when asked about marriage, squarely referred to Genesis 1 and 2."It will also mean that when sperm fertilizes an egg that's when human life begins and abortion would be killing a human being," Ham said. "To go and deliberately kill a baby by abortion would be murder. So there are incredible implications and consequences for what you believe in regard to the creation/evolution issue."One of the most important implications of people's views on evolution versus creation, Ham said, surrounds the issue of death. When tragedies happen and people wonder how a loving God could exist amid death and suffering, their origins beliefs are relevant."If you take God's Word as written in Genesis, death is a result of sin.... It's not God's fault, it's our fault," Ham said.

A basic battle of worldviews

The Pew study is another argument for the need for Christians to take a strong stand on the absolute authority of the Word of God, Ham said. "Really what's going on in our culture is a battle of worldviews. It's two worldviews really. It's a worldview built on God's Word versus a worldview built on man's word," Ham said. "It's really a battle between two authorities. Who is the authority? It goes back to Genesis 3 in the Bible: 'Did God really say?' "The first attack was on the Word of God, and it has always been a battle between who is the authority. Is it God's Word or is it man who determines truth?" Ham said. "That's the battle we're seeing before us: God's Word/man's word."The Bible says men love darkness rather than light and there's a broad way and a narrow way, so I'm not shocked to see that it's a minority that would take a similar stand that we do," Ham said.Mark Coppenger, professor of apologetics at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said while religious liberalism has "embraced Darwinism from the start and has ridden it down into spiritual feebleness," he's pleased that the Pew study shows many have refused to abandon a biblical worldview."It's gratifying to see so many people refusing to toss aside the prima facie Genesis account for a theory whose absurdity becomes more evident with each passing year," Coppenger told Baptist Press. "Perhaps the evolution skeptics ... doubt that the math will work out, even if you grant the Darwinists the gazillions of years they claim," Coppenger said. "Maybe they're leery of a story that gives so much aid and comfort to atheists. Maybe they've read the strong work of Philip Johnson and Michael Behe or picked up on the AiG museum or [a creation-themed] Grand Canyon tour."Maybe they've figured that science, by its very nature, is incompetent to pontificate on utterly non-repeatable, far-distant occurrences, such as the origin of earth and man," Coppenger said. "Perhaps they find assurances that science and religion don't conflict when they read of miracles in the Bible. It could be any number of things."Rob Phillips, an apologetics leader for the Missouri Baptist Convention, said the beliefs expressed in the Pew study have implications for daily life because if evolution is true, life ultimately is meaningless."Your life might have some temporal significance with respect to how you impact other people's lives or alter the course of history, but death remains our common destiny," Phillips told Baptist Press. "If creation is true, however, life is not only meaningful but everlasting. We are created in the image of God, for a relationship with God, and with the divine purpose of knowing our Creator and living with Him beyond the grave," Phillips said. "Death is no longer our destiny but a defeated enemy."--30--Erin Roach is assistant editor of Baptist Press. With reporting by Baptist Press editor Art Toalston. Hassidic Millionaire Abducted in Brooklyn, Reportedly Found Dead

A badly burned body found on a Great Neck dumpster outside a gas station is reported to be that of Menachem Stark.-By Arutz Sheva staff-First Publish: 1/4/2014, 7:06 PM-Israelnationalnews

A badly burned body found on a Great Neck dumpster outside a gas station is the millionaire Hassidic real estate developer who was kidnapped in Williamsburg Thursday, law enforcement sources confirmed to The New York Post. The NYPD released video Saturday morning that appears to show suspects forcing Stark into a light-colored Dodge Caravan after he had left the real estate offices of Southside Associates on Rutledge Street near Broadway. Investigators believe he was duct-taped before he was thrown into the van, which sped off.A gas station employee in Great Neck had discovered the body around 4 p.m., Friday, and alerted Nassau County Police.Earlier, Stark's relatives offered to pay a $100,000 reward for his safe return, no questions asked, after he was kidnapped outside his Brooklyn office Thursday night.DNAinfo New York reported that Stark left his office at 331 Rutledge Street at 11:20 p.m. Thursday and was walking to his home a few blocks away when two men grabbed him, and drove him away in a white or light-colored minivan, according to a flyer put out by Shomrim, a neighborhood watch group for the Orthodox community. Security video shows Stark being pulled into the van.Stark's wife, Bashie, became worried when he did not come home before midnight and notified the neighborhood patrol, the NYPD said. Shomrim alerted police at 2:30 a.m. on Friday.NYPD investigators canvassed Rutledge Street on Friday morning, pulling security footage from multiple security cameras and speaking to local business owners. The search continued into the Sabbath, and Jewish volunteers took part in it with rabbinical permission, reported the Jewish Daily Forward. The embedded video shows the van in which he was abducted driving down Broadway.“We have to move quickly,” Yoely Stark, Menachem Stark’s brother told Voz Is Neias on Friday. “Shabbos is coming and time is very important.” The brother invoked the memory of Leiby Kletzky, the Brooklyn boy who was snatched off the street and murdered in 2011.“Remember Leiby Kletzky? They only got him through the security cameras and we need people to come forward now to help,” Yoely Stark told the web site. “The fastest way possible to get information is through the cameras which give the most accurate information.”
Police sources told the Daily News that Stark was carrying $4,000 in cash at the time of the alleged kidnapping.Stark was reportedly sued in 2011 over a $29 million loan that financed a 74-unit residential rental building at 100 South 4th Street in south Williamsburg, the Real Deal reported. Yitzy Stark acknowledged that his brother was involved in several large real estate deals, but said the family knows of no bad blood that could have sparked the kidnapping.Stark is a member of the Satmar hassidic community.

The condition of former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, described Friday as in a "slow, gradual" decline after eight years in a coma, was unchanged Saturday, according to public radio.  "At this time we cannot report any change in the condition of former prime minister Ariel Sharon," the station reported from Tel Hashomer hospital near Tel Aviv.Sharon is reportedly nearing death, with the 85-year-old's health worsening Wednesday as he suffered serious kidney problems after surgery."Tests show a slow, gradual deterioration in the functioning of his vital organs... His state has not changed. He's still in critical condition, and his life is in danger," Tel Hashomer hospital director Zeev Rotstein was quoted by public radio as saying Friday in the last official bulletin on his condition before Shabbat. "I don't think the situation will improve with time, and we know what usually happens in cases like this," he added, suggesting that Sharon might die soon.
Rotstein said there were traces of infection in Sharon's blood, and that it had not been possible for him to undergo renal dialysis since his other organs were in such a fragile state.  Sharon has remained in a vegetative state since suffering a massive stroke in 2006. Since then his condition was relatively stable, but in recent weeks deteriorated significantly after he suffered a renal failure.

Former prime minister Ariel Sharon remained in critical condition and was gradually deteriorating Saturday, a day after Sheba Medical Center director Zeev Rotstein said he was suffering from continuous organ failure that may lead to critical damage to many bodily systems.Hospital sources said his condition continued to gradually worsen. His family, including grandchildren, and several close friends, visited in the course of Saturday.“He is fighting like a true warrior, as he has all his life,” Rotstein said of the former general during a press conference at the hospital Friday. “But as time passes, the situation will not get better and we understand what happens in situations like these.”On Wednesday, hospital personnel had put out a laconic statement saying the comatose former leader’s condition had taken a turn for the worse. His family has been at his bedside for the past several days, and his condition has been defined as critical, with indications that he has at most a few days to live.Doctors said Sharon, 85, who has been in a vegetative state since 2006, was suffering from renal failure that could lead to multiple organ system failure and death. On Thursday morning, Rotstein confirmed that Sharon, who has been hospitalized at Sheba for seven years, was suffering from failure of multiple “organs that are vital to life.”The hospital director said that while Sharon’s condition had “seen ups and downs” in the past two-and-a-half months, his life was now in danger.“The danger [to Sharon's life] exists, [but] as we know, Arik [Sharon] is a powerful man and has survived difficult situations during his time in our hospital,” he continued. ”I’m no prophet, but the feeling among the doctors treating him and the family by his side… is that he has taken a turn for the worse.”Rotstein added that Sharon wasn’t receiving dialysis treatment, as it was not recommended for a patient with multiple organ failure. He said the ex-prime minister had received antibiotic treatment in recent weeks for infections that caused his condition to deteriorate.“He is receiving all the treatments that a patient in his condition should receive,” he said.In September, doctors reinstalled a feeding tube in Sharon’s digestive system. The procedure was completed without incident, and the former prime minister was returned to the hospital’s Department of Respiratory Care and Rehabilitation, where he has been in treatment in recent years.

Sharon is one of Israel’s most iconic and controversial figures. As one of Israel’s most famous generals, Sharon was known for bold tactics and an occasional refusal to obey orders. As a politician he became known as “The Bulldozer,” a man contemptuous of his critics while also capable of getting things done.
As defense minister, he led Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon, and was forced to resign the post after a commission of inquiry found him responsible for failing to prevent the massacre by Christian Phalangists of Palestinian refugees in Beirut’s Sabra and Shatila camps.A prominent hard-line voice over the decades, he was elected prime minister in 2001.In mid-2005, he directed a unilateral withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlers from the Gaza Strip, ending a 38-year military control of the territory. It was a shocking turnaround for a man who had been a leading player in building Jewish settlements in captured territories. He bolted the Likud party soon after and established the centrist Kadima party, where he was joined by Ehud Olmert and Tzipi Livni. He appeared on his way to an easy reelection when he suffered a severe stroke in January 2006. His deputy, Olmert, took over and was elected prime minister a few months later.Sharon had a first, small stroke in December 2005 and was put on blood thinners before experiencing a severe brain hemorrhage on January 4, 2006. After spending months in the Jerusalem hospital where he was initially treated, Sharon was transferred to the long-term care facility at Tel Hashomer Hospital. He was taken home briefly at one point, but was returned to the hospital, where he has been since.Ilan Ben Zion, Yifa Yaakov and AP contributed to this report.

Ariel Sharon’s life in grave danger, family at bedside

Hospital director confirms former PM experiencing malfunction of ‘multiple’ vital organs as his condition deteriorates

January 2, 2014, 12:01 pm 21-The Times of Israel
Former prime minister Ariel Sharon is suffering from vital organ failure after his condition deteriorated significantly in recent weeks, Sheba Medical Center director Zeev Rotstein said on Thursday. It was a first statement to the press by hospital personnel since a spokesman put out a laconic statement Wednesday saying the comatose leader’s condition had taken a turn for the worse. His family was at his bedside on Thursday afternoon, and his condition was defined as “critical.”On Wednesday, doctors said Sharon, 85, who has been in a vegetative state since 2006, was suffering from renal failure that could lead to multiple organ system failure and death. On Thursday morning, Rotstein confirmed that Sharon, who has been hospitalized at Sheba for seven years, was suffering from failure of multiple “organs that are vital to life.”
The hospital director said that while Sharon’s condition had “seen ups and downs” in the past two and a half months, his life was now in danger after the function of several of his vital organs gradually declined.“We define his condition as critical. His life is definitely in danger,” Rotstein said. “This is his condition as of today.” He added that the comatose leader’s condition has been deteriorating for “a very long time.”“The danger [to Sharon's life] exists, [but] as we know, Arik [Sharon] is a powerful man and has survived difficult situations during his time in our hospital,” he said. Rabbi Kaduri´s Most Recent Words-JAN 24-2006

(IsraelNN.com) Famed Kabbalist Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri, who has been in serious condition in the hospital for 1.5 weeks, revived and spoke with his close associates for an hour and forty minutes after the end of the Sabbath, this past Saturday night. One of those people, Arutz-7 Hebrew radio showhost Yehoshua Meiri, related to Arutz-7 the rabbi’s words. The rabbi spoke in Hebrew; what follows is an approximate translation:

“The Kabbalists will investigate my words over the recent months about the Redemption and Moshiach [The Annointed Leader of the Jews during that period] and will reveal the secret name of Moshiach which was revealed to me on Cheshvan 9, 5764 (November 4, 2003).” The rabbi said he actually met the person who will be Moshiach, on that date.

The rabbi said of the Moshiach, “He won’t come and say ‘I am the Moshiach. Give over the rule to me.’ Rather the Kabbalists would discover the secret name [of Moshiach] among my ‘hidden’ [Kabbalistic] words and the nation will push him to lead it.”

Meiri also described a “ceremony” that took place during the brief period the rabbi was awake and alert. With only four people in the room, the rabbi “whispered Tzofanim Kabbalisti’im [Kabalistic esoteric codes] to one of the four persons present, whose name we are not revealing.”

Well-wishers can visit the Kaduri.net website. It is a Hebrew language site.

Disaster, Redemption and the Tsunami

At least one Kabbalist sage predicted "natural calamities" over two weeks ago. He and others call for an increase in acts of kindness, as they try to place the events in universal context.
12/30/2004, 2:46 PM / Last Update: 12/30/2004, 4:00 PM-Israelnationalnews

The venerated Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri, considered Israel's leading Kabbalist rabbi, was quoted in the Yediot Acharonot newspaper on Dec. 12 as saying:

"We are now in the fourth year of what could be the seven-year Redemption period, according to the calculation of the Vilna Gaon. [However.] in the coming three years, uncertainty about the future will hang over our heads, unless we work and strive that the Messiah be revealed. The Messiah is already [here] in Israel. Whatever people are sure will not happen, is liable to happen, and whatever we are certain will happen may disappoint us. But in the end, there will be peace throughout the world. The world is mitmatek mehadinim (lit., becoming sweet from/of strict justice), great tragedies in the world are foreseen, that's the thing of the Jews going to the East. [emphasis added] But our enemies will not prevail over us in the Land of Israel, 'fear and trembling will fall upon them,' in the [merit of the] power of Torah."

Rabbi Kaduri said this week, "What can save the world from calamities is real repentance by Jews, who must increase acts of kindness towards one another... The cry of the many poor in Israel and the expulsion of Jews from their homes shakes the world... It's not for naught that this place was hit, where many of our compatriots went to look for this-worldly lusts."

Rabbi Kaduri has told his students that the current government will be the last one of the "old era," and that the new government will already have leadership of the Messianic era.

Another sage, Rabbi Chaim Kanevsky of Bnei Brak, was quoted in Yediot in the same article as saying that we are verily in the period of the beginning of the Redemption period, and that the Messiah could be revealed at any moment. He called for further outreach "in order to prevent calamities and to bring mercy from the Creator. All Jews must come to the Land of Israel." The Rabbi also called to establish Torah schools in every area, and that "Torah study will prevent calamities – from earthquakes to other natural disasters."

The Kipa website, a Hebrew-language forum for religious youth, features a response by Rabbi Uziel Eliyahu, Chief Rabbi of the Misgav Regional Council in the Galilee regarding a Jewish approach to the calamitous events. "First of all," Rabbi Eliyahu wrote, "we should pray and ask G-d to remove His wrath from the word, send a complete recovery to the injured, and help and protect everyone in the world, causing sorrow to depart."

Rabbi Eliyahu added that what is happening now was decreed on Rosh HaShanah [the Jewish New Year]: "It was a Divine decree that was issued regarding 'who will be killed by water, and who by fire...'" Our job now, he wrote, is to "pray to G-d, to try harder in studying Torah and fulfilling the Torah and doing acts of kindness and charity. This is an hour of reckoning for the entire world!!!"

Rabbi Eliyahu emphasized that G-d has complete control of nature, and that the Jewish People live "amidst great faith, despite questions that remain open. No question mark can break our strength of great and perfect faith in G-d... This does not prevent us from asking and searching for answers and [logical] explanations, but it all takes place on the solid ground of great faith in G-d... The Bible (Zechariah 14) mentions that in the future, when the Messiah comes, the Mt. of Olives will be split in two... The Messiah can come at any minute, even as you read these lines..."

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

Palestinian red lines make chances of US-mediated settlement slim

With Abbas saying he can’t accept Israel as a Jewish state ‘as a Palestinian, as a people, as the PLO,’ Erekat eyes ICC lawsuit as path to statehood

January 4, 2014, 11:25 am 26-The Times of Israel
US Secretary of State John Kerry met on Friday with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah for a talk that lasted several hours. On Saturday, Kerry was heading back for another round of talks with Abbas and his negotiating team, including chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. On Friday, the London-based A-Sharq Al-Awsat paper published an interview with Erekat that made waves due to Erekat’s claim that Israel murdered Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and could do the same to Abbas. ”This is the conduct of the Israelis,” said Erekat. “Before they killed [Yasser] Arafat by poisoning there were also voices from the [Ariel] Sharon government saying that Arafat is an obstacle and that he must be gotten rid of.” Independent French, and later Russian forensic experts have ruled out the possibility that the late Palestinian leader was poisoned. The other comments made by Erekat in his interview — the ones about the ongoing negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians — were downplayed. But they are actually very important: Erekat’s statements demonstrate just how wide the gulf between the two sides is, and suggest that Washington’s chances of reaching a framework agreement are slim, perhaps even very slim.First of all, Erekat stressed in the interview that the Palestinians will not agree to have talks extended beyond the allotted nine months, set to end in April. ”Even a one-minute extension is impossible,” he was quoted as saying.
“Unlike what others say, the negotiations will be nine months long. The objective is to reach an agreement on all issues pertaining to a final-status deal. And according to the wording of the agreement with Kerry, there will be no transitional or interim agreements,” Erekat said.

Kerry made his way back to the region Thursday for another series of talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. This time, he was expected to present both sides with a framework deal touching on all core issues. But with April approaching fast and time running out, Erekat’s words reflect a growing impatience within the Palestinian Authority with what they see as Israeli attempts to prolong negotiations.“The US administration understands that the talks can’t go on for nine months, and so it is trying to cut them short in order to safeguard the peace process and preempt the extension of negotiations,” Erekat said.He added, however, that Israel was trying to thwart the peace process — and US efforts — in “every way,” with the latest example being an Israeli bill to annex the Jordan Valley, which passed a key ministerial committee last week.
Claiming that the last face-to-face talks with Israel’s negotiating team took place way back on November 5, Erekat presented a list of Israeli moves and “crimes” that he said undermined the peace process and led him to resign from the position of chief negotiator — a resignation that seems not to have taken effect.Erekat said that since then, there have been no direct talks, only separate meetings between US officials and their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts. Even these efforts did not bear fruit, he said, as Washington has yet to present the two sides with an official offer. The top negotiator then revealed the contents of a letter Abbas had sent US President Barack Obama following a particularly fraught Abbas-Kerry meeting on December 8.
“In that letter, the president made clear what he would not be able to accept as a Palestinian, as a people, as the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization). Firstly, we will not be able to accept Israel as a Jewish state,” Abbas wrote, according to Erekat.“Secondly, we will not be able to accept a Palestinian state with 1967 borders without Jerusalem. Thirdly, we will not be able to accept any Israeli on Palestinian land, sea, air and border crossings following the completion of the gradual withdrawal.”A fourth precondition reportedly set by Abbas was the instatement of the so-called “right of return” for potentially millions of Palestinian refugees and their descendants to Israel.“I will not be able to accept any solution that does not grant the refugees their right to the possibility to return and be compensated as per UN Resolution 194, as well as one that does not allow for the release of prisoners,” Abbas reportedly wrote.Erekat said Abbas presented these preconditions to the Arab League, which transferred them to UN Security Council member states. This is in keeping with Erekat’s preferred strategy for achieving Palestinian statehood – appealing to the European Union to recognize the Palestinian state while appealing to various international bodies to sign treaties and protocols that would enable the Palestinian Authority to file a suit against Israel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Bennett said to give Netanyahu ‘red lines’ for framework deal

Jewish Home leader reportedly talks to Likud MKs, ministers about breaking from coalition over perceived flawed agreement with Palestinians

January 4, 2014, 4:43 am
Economics Minister Naftali Bennett reportedly met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu one-on-one multiple times this week and laid out “red lines” for a framework agreement with the Palestinians which, if breached, may prompt him to pull his party from the government, Channel 2 reported on Friday.According to the report, the Jewish Home party leader also held “intensive” meetings with ministers and MKs from Netanyahu’s Likud to test the possibility of their joining his secession in objection to the terms of a deal with the Palestinians.News of a possible rift in the center-right coalition surfaced amid US Secretary of State John Kerry’s latest visit to the region to bring about a framework agreement between Jerusalem and Ramallah. Kerry met with Netanyahu on Thursday and Friday, and met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday as well.Kerry is asking both leaders to start making tough, highly political decisions in hopes of narrowing differences and thus to agree on a framework that will outline a final peace pact.
The goal is for the framework deal, or series of guidelines, to address all core issues, including borders between Israel and a future Palestinian state, Palestinian refugees and conflicting claims to the holy city of Jerusalem. No agreement on a framework is likely during Kerry’s visit.According to senior government officials cited by Channel 10 Friday, Netanyahu intends to put the framework agreement to a cabinet vote, a move which may find stiff opposition in the government.“The decision to put it before the cabinet is expected to cause a grave rift in the coalition government, and even within the Likud party,” Channel 10 reported.
Channel 2 correspondent Dana Weiss said that the reported meetings between Bennett and Netanyahu appeared to be indicative that members of the right wing government “understood that [the negotiations] are on the verge of something serious.”While the Channel 2 report didn’t mention any names of Likud members who spoke to Bennett, it showed clips of hardline right-wing MK Moshe Feiglin, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon. It was not clear whether those individuals were connected to the story. The report also did not indicate what aspects of a framework deal with the Palestinians Bennett would find so intolerable as to prompt him to pull his 12-member Jewish Home party from Netanyahu’s coalition. Such a move has the potential to jeopardize the stability of Netanyahu’s government.Channel 2 added that Bennett felt slighted because ministers who support a negotiated agreement — Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman, for example — have received more “VIP treatment” from American officials than he has.Similarly stiff opposition to a prospective framework agreement was voiced Friday by a close aide to Abbas, Yasser Abed Rabbo. Rabbo, the secretary general of the PLO, called the plan “biased towards Israel” and said it restricted Palestinian sovereignty in the West Bank.“The Palestinian side will not even look at a worthless piece of paper, a framework agreement, which contains general principles for later negotiations, when the two sides have already been negotiating for months and years,” Rabbo told the Palestinian al-Ayyam newspaper on Friday.
As of yet, no confirmed concrete details of the framework agreement proposed by the US have come to light.AP contributed to this report.

Kerry, Abbas discuss framework deal in Ramallah

‘Declarations’ may be released to the media on Saturday, after an additional scheduled meeting between the two

January 3, 2014, 7:18 pm 7
US Secretary of State John Kerry met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah Friday evening to discuss a framework agreement that will address the outlines of a final peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.Abbas and Kerry, who arrived in the region Thursday, are expected to meet again Saturday morning. At the end of that scheduled meeting, some “declarations” may be released to the media, reported Israel Radio.Kerry has said Israel and the Palestinians will have to face tough choices in the coming week. Speaking Thursday at a joint press conference — before the first of several planned meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — Kerry said leaders on both sides already knew what would be contained in a US-drafted framework agreement, and added that an agreement was not “mission impossible.” Kerry met with Netanyahu on Thursday and again on Friday.Netanyahu is reportedly ready to continue talks on the basis of the framework deal, which has not been made public, even if it references a Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 lines — provided he is not required to sign it.But a framework accord may not be enough to secure a subsequent face-to-face meeting between Netanyahu and Abbas, an indication of the wide gaps that remain.Kerry’s security proposals, which reportedly provide for the presence of IDF troops to secure the West Bank-Jordanian border after a permanent deal is reached, have reportedly been rejected by Abbas. The sides also differ widely on possible land-swap arrangements, and are reportedly deadlocked on some core issues, including Jerusalem and the repatriation of refugees and their descendants.Kerry arrived in Israel Thursday amid reported plans by Netanyahu to authorize the construction of 1,400 homes over the pre-1967 Green Line — 600 in East Jerusalem and 800 in nearby West Bank settlements. Abbas has urged the US to block the plans and on Tuesday threatened to rally the UN against Israel’s settlements, which he termed a “cancer.”Israeli officials decided to delay announcing plans for new settlement construction until after Kerry leaves the region.Earlier Friday, during a meeting with the US secretary, Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman stressed that, although dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians was “important,” any preliminary accord would leave many issues unresolved.Liberman cited the Palestinian refugees as an example of such an issue, and said nearly three million refugees would need to be integrated into the Palestinian state, a scenario that could lead to unrest.“It is likely that, after an agreement is reached, some other countries in the region will want to transfer the Palestinian refugees who currently reside in their territory,” he said, according to Channel 2 News.“That would mean that, to the 800,000 Palestinians who live in the Palestinian Authority today, about three million refugees will be added, and this may make the humanitarian situation there very difficult. This will bring frustration, violence and a security deterioration.”
The foreign minister suggested that issues such as refugees be addressed sooner rather than later, before the signing of an interim agreement.Yifa Yaakov and Raphael Ahren contributed to this report

Weather woes in Canada: Blizzards, blackouts, deep freezes

Atlantic Canada gets brunt of winter blasts, with deep freezes in Prairies, Ontario and Quebec

CBC News Posted: Jan 04, 2014 10:42 AM ET Last Updated: Jan 04, 2014 10:54 AM ET
People in Eastern Canada are bearing the brunt of an angry winter that unleashed its wrath yesterday and is still causing grief today, as many in blizzard-hit Newfoundland face power outagesthe Maritimes cleans up, and the Prairies, Ontario and Quebec are warned about below-freezing temperatures.CBC meteorologist Janine Baijnath says Newfoundland and Labrador, in particular, has been seriously hit, with a blizzard Friday that left about 38 centimetres of snow. Many Newfoundlanders awoke to no power due to the blizzard, after Friday's rolling blackouts.
"In St. John's, winds are gusting to 90 kilometres an hour ... there are still blizzard warnings and wind warnings gusting to about 100 km/h in parts [of the city]," she said Friday morning. "This will continue for most of the morning until the system tracks to the northeast. The system is expected to taper off by later [Saturday] morning, but pick up an additional two to four centimetres of snow for parts of Newfoundland."
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro said severe weather caused a fire in Sunnyside that led to a shutdown at the Holyrood Generating Station, causing a massive outage across the island. The provincial Crown corporation said it is working to restore power at Holyrood but it may take several hours. The power outages are linked to generator failures, Newfoundland Power said. The storm continued on the Avalon Peninsula and parts of the east coast of the province.

Travel plans may be affected

Travel is also affected, with people heading to St. John's International Airport urged to reschedule arrangements as most flights are either cancelled or delayed, bus service essentially cancelled, and police urging drivers to stay off roads and highways if possible.Newfoundland Power ended its rotating power outages Friday night, saying people responded to the company's plea to conserve power.
  • Police advise motorists, including all officers, to stay off the roads as dangerous whiteout conditions brought on by snow and wind continue to lash much of Atlantic Canada. Here, a pedestrian in Halifax braves the blizzard.

Michelle Coughlan, with Newfoundland Power, said the rotating outages could start again as early as Saturday morning.Meanwhile in the Maritimes, cleanup has begun after a horrendous storm that slammed much of the region.People in Moncton, N.B., are being warned by the fire department to ensure snow is cleaned off their roofs, and from around basement windows, and dryer and natural gas vents, because at least 80 centimetres of snow has accumulated on the ground in the last two weeks alone.
The hardest-hit areas of the Maritimes appear to be the southwestern edges of Nova Scotia and along the Atlantic coastline. But a warming trend is expected to begin Sunday, according to Environment Canada, followed by rain, windy and mild conditions on Monday. Temperatures are expected to fall back below freezing on Tuesday, which could mark trouble for road crews and drivers. The Nova Scotia communities of Shelburne and Yarmouth received more than 19 centimetres of snow, with much of the rest of the province receiving about 20 centimetres. The North Shore and northern Cape Breton received the least amount of snow — between five and 10 centimetres.Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick also received between five and 10 centimetres of snow.

Extreme cold, but alert over in Toronto

In Toronto, where there were reports of loud booms that have been blamed on so-called frost quakes, an extreme cold alert that began on Jan. 1 was cancelled Saturday. The freezing weather has led to overflowing homeless shelters, and caused pipes to freeze and burst. The Toronto Transit System was also affected, with dozens of streetcars out of service due to freezing air brakes, and delays on Go Transit, the regional public transit service for the greater Toronto and Hamilton areas.Baijnath said wind-chill warnings remain in effect in various parts of the country, including in Quebec, where it feels more like –30 C."As you head more toward the north, it feels more like –50, with the risk of frostbite to exposed skin," she said.Cold is also funnelling in from parts of the Prairies, Baijnath said, with the wind chill making it feel like –38 in Saskatoon.

Dangerous cold sets in as heavy snow blankets U.S. Northeast

Reuters

BOSTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - People across the northeastern United States on Friday dug out after a heavy snowfall that grounded thousands of flights, closed schools and government offices, caused several deaths and left the region in the grip of bitter cold.Boston was hard hit by the first major winter storm of 2014, getting nearly 18 inches of snow, while some towns north of New England's largest city saw close to 2 feet of accumulation.Major cities from Washington, D.C., to Portland, Maine, were slammed, with New York's Manhattan Island getting 6 inches of snow and parts of Queens seeing more than 10 inches of fresh powder. While plows made easy work of the powdery snow to clear roads and runways, authorities warned residents to expect unusually cold weather across the Midwest and Northeast.Embarrass, Minnesota, notched a reading of minus 36 Fahrenheit (minus 38 Celsius) that stood as the lowest temperature recorded in the United States outside Alaska on Friday, according to the National Weather Service."Temperatures tonight and tomorrow are expected to be extremely low, and dangerously so," Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said. "These are dangerous conditions."The forecast overnight low for Boston was minus 4F (minus 20C) while New York looked for a low of 3F (minus 16C).New York City's Department of Homeless Services went to "code blue," doubling the number of vans patrolling streets to seek people who needed shelter and streamlining the check-in process for homeless shelters.
SEVERAL DEATHS REPORTED
Washington received more than 2 inches of snow, Philadelphia roughly 5 inches and Hartford 7 inches. (U.S. snowfall: http://link.reuters.com/zym75v) In Cambridge, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, Tom Klein took a break from shoveling and said that a life in New England had accustomed him to harsh winter weather.
"I love a good snowstorm," the 60-year-old co-owner of a small manufacturing company said. "I don't mind shoveling. I've never minded shoveling."Some 3,467 flights were canceled on Friday across the United States and 12,394 were delayed with Philadelphia and Newark airports hardest hit, according to FlightAware.com.Airports across the region warned travelers to expect residual delays as they cleared a backlog of flights."We now have all our airfields - runways and taxiways - clear," said Ed Freni, aviation director for Boston's Logan International Airport. "We will be back to normal operations by tomorrow."The weather was a factor in several deaths.Police recovered the body of a 71-year-old woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease who had wandered out in the rural western New York State town of Byron on Thursday night, improperly dressed for the single-digit temperatures, according to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office.
A Philadelphia city worker was killed after a machine he was using was crushed by a mound of rock salt, media said.
DE BLASIO DIGS OUT
New York's new mayor, Bill de Blasio, started his day shoveling the walk in front of his Brooklyn brownstone - a task his wife had said their 16-year-old son Dante would handle. Dante turned up later, not being an early riser, his father said at a briefing.Asked what grade he would give his teenaged son, de Blasio said: "I give Dante an A for effort and a D for punctuality."In Washington, the Office of Personnel Management told hundreds of thousands of federal workers they could work from home or take a leave because of the storm. The United Nations in New York and federal courts in New York, New Jersey, and Boston shut down. Schools closed across much of the region.A Wayne, New Jersey, man was rescued Friday afternoon after falling through the ice at Ramapo Lake, where he was snowshoeing in an area frequented by hikers and mountain bikers, state officials said. The Oakland Police Department dive rescue team pulled the man to safety and resuscitated 34-year-old Guncel Karadogan, who was talking and lucid as he was taken to a local hospital, where there was no immediate word on his condition. And in Monmouth, New Jersey, fire officials said the driver of a mail truck and two people in another vehicle were rescued from flood waters in separate incidents after the Shrewsbury River flooded during high tide late Friday morning.
One victim was transported to Monmouth Medical Center. However, a spokesperson could not release any information on that victim. In Green Bay, Wisconsin, the temperature plummeted to -18 degrees Fahrenheit (-28 C) on Friday, breaking a record for the date set in 1979, according to the National Weather Service.
Despite the frigid forecast predicted for the end of the weekend, Green Bay Packers fans bought the remaining 40,000 tickets this week for their team's National Football League playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The NFL threatened to prohibit local TV from airing the game if the team was unable to sell out the game in Lambeau Field, where diehard fans will brave the temperatures expected reach 0F (minus 18C) during the game.(Additional reporting by Ellen Wulfhorst and Barbara Goldberg in New York; Daniel Lovering in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Jeffrey B. Rare 'frost quake' phenomenon bewilders Greater Toronto Area residents

A baffling boom on Christmas Eve that rattled Greater Toronto Area residents reeling in the wake of an ice storm was likely a rare phenomenon known as a frost quake.Residents in the GTA and surrounding areas took to Twitter with reports of mysterious booms late Christmas Eve and early Christmas Day that even jarred many awake from slumber. With the area encased in ice following a nasty mix of rain and snow Sunday, many believed ice or a tree limb had fallen on their rooftop. As first reported by Global Toronto, the U.S. Geological Survey did not register a seismic event in Ontario on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and there were no reports to the American Meteor Society, ruling out comets or meteors, and leaving a cryoseism, or frost quake, as a likely explanation.A rare  phenomenon, cryoseisms usually "occur when temperatures go from above to below freezing," says CBC News meteorologist Michelle Leslie."Water in the surrounding soil and rocks freezes. As water freezes, it expands, putting pressure on the dirt and rocks," she says."When the pressure build-up is too much, the dirt or rocks will crack, and you hear a loud boom."They tend to occur between midnight and dawn, the coldest time of night and are very localized, so residents a few blocks away may not have heard the Christmas Eve or Christmas day booms. In Toronto, an extreme cold weather alert was in effect Tuesday, and temperatures were well below freezing in the GTA and surrounding areas. Some 250,000 residents in Toronto were without power following the major ice storm and tens of thousands are in their sixth day without electricity.
